It’s Time for Holiday Giving Fun!

It’s my favorite time of the year: holiday giving season! If you’re like me, you find more joy in finding the perfect gift for that special someone in your life than you do in compiling a list of “wants” for yourself. To help get you started, and in an effort to support shopping local, we urge you to flip to page 26 to check out the more than 36 items in our ever-popular Annual Holiday Gift Guide.

Those who know me also know that if I were to give a gift idea for myself, it would more than likely be an experience versus an item. For those looking to eliminate giving “stuff” and instead gift something that will make memories, you’ll want to turn to page 11 for 10 local ideas.

Perhaps you’d like to take a break from all the shopping and enjoy some time with family or friends over a special and, of course, delicious meal. We’ve got just the spot. On page 46 we happily introduce you to Grind Restaurant in Boyertown. Think gourmet meatballs, a Santa Margherita, filet mignon, strawberry shortcake and much more.

And at the end of the day, as the fall chill sets in, we invite you to cozy up with a favorite read (this magazine, perhaps!) in your favorite loungewear with a cup of cocoa or hot tea. Start your shopping with The Look on page 18.

Happy Shopping!

One More Thing

Do you have a special place in your home that you consider your happy place? We want to see it AND hear about it! Email us at bcleditor@ berkscountyliving.com and we may feature it in an upcoming issue.

Let the Pros Handle Your Holiday Lights

Spruce up your winter night this season with light and décor design by Anewalt’s Landscape Contracting in Bernville. A favorite in the area for 34 years and counting, Anewalt’s has served countless homeowners and businesses with some of the grandest home, garden, landscaping, shrubbery, patio and pool projects. This holiday season, Anewalt’s annual lights and winter décor service returns to spread cheer everywhere. Look to them for their signature, commercial grade design and installation, from warm and rustic to bold and inspiring stylings. The pandemic really gave the holiday decorating service a boost. “People who weren’t leaving home wanted to see their neighborhoods lit up; they wanted to see a lot of lights in a place where they felt comfortable. People shared that Christmas lights became a beacon of hope in their community, and I thought that was a beautiful expression,” says Vice President Lori Anewalt. Event lighting, long-term installations and equipment storage services are available year-round. For more info visit anewaltslandscape.com.

Boutique Big on Giving Back

Looking for a one-of-a-kind gift for a loved one or special occasion? Look no further than Roo Hoo’s Boutique. Started by owner Carrie McCarty in April of 2015 when the anxiety of her husband’s cancer diagnosis became overwhelming, the endeavor allowed Tom to research what Carrie could later create, as well as offer a respite from the worries that came with his illness. Explains Carrie, “Tom pushed me to have goals, and without me realizing it at the time, he was setting me up for life without him. We lost Tom in July of 2016.” Pretty much whatever you can imagine, Carrie can create – t-shirts, farmhouse signs and other personalized gifts. And if she can’t do it, she has a great network of crafter friends that can help to make it happen. Carrie is also big on giving back. She explains, “I offer fundraisers through the candle company I partnered with a few years back, and we donate $7.50 per candle sold. We help sports groups and other nonprofit organizations and also families who have received dreaded news that a loved one has cancer.” For more info, visit Roo Hoo’s on Facebook at @RooHoo123. – NIKKI M. Festive Event Benefits Animals in Need

Love helping animals and celebrating the holidays, too? If you answered “yes,” then the Animal Rescue League of Berks County has the perfect event for you set for Dec. 3, starting at 6pm at Stokesay Castle in Reading. Get your ticket for the Festival of Trees, a gala event decorated with more than 25 breathtaking holiday trees and displays, plus additional desirable items used as décor that you can bid on, all to benefit the animals, of course. Some tree themes will include: local cuisine, toys, gift cards, coffee, beauty products and services and pet supplies, to name a few. The night will also feature cuisine crafted by the talented chefs at Stokesay and will include champagne and fine appetizers before dinner is served. A cash bar will also be offered. The nonprofit will be feeling especially festive as it celebrates its 70th anniversary. Entertainment will be provided by The Uptown Band, and the 2nd Annual Animal Hero Award will be presented to a dedicated animal advocate in the community. Tickets: $125. To purchase or for more info visit berksarl.org/festival-of-trees.

Lend a Hand for Thanksgiving

Want to help others in need this Thanksgiving in the true spirit of the holiday? Safe Berks could use you!

1 . Be a Volunteer Cook.

Safe Berks is looking for helpers to cook and deliver dinner to residents every evening of the week, including on Thanksgiving. The dinners provide both nutrition and positive energy to residents. If you can’t do that, you could sponsor dinner from a local restaurant instead.

2 . Be a Sponsor.

If cooking isn’t your thing, you can still help. Consider making a donation to sponsor dinner for a resident, or two, from a local restaurant. It’s a win-win.

3 . Reach out.

Cooks and volunteers are needed year-round. For more info contact Mindy McIntosh, Director of Development, at 610.468.9637 or mindym@safeberks.org

The Woman’s Club of Exeter Township

The Woman's Club of Exeter Township is a service-oriented group of women with hearts and helping hands. It’s an organization that welcomes women of all ages to get involved in the community and have a little fun. As one of the few remaining woman’s clubs in the area, the Exeter Township group boasts roughly 70 members. And you don’t need to live in Exeter Township to be a part of this community of women.

Annual membership fees are $25, and monthly meetings are held from September to May at the Exeter Community Library. At those meetings, you’ll find ample activities, small subcommittees, community outreach efforts and more ways to serve. President Gail DiBlasi explains, “The formal objective is to develop the educational, civic and social interest of our members and to advance the welfare of the community.”

How They Help

Being a part of the Woman’s Club of Exeter means sharing the compassion and care that each member holds in her heart for the community and giving back in many ways. Here are just a few:

• School support: The original motivation behind The Woman’s Club, organized in the late 1940s, was to establish a kindergarten in the Reiffton area. It makes sense then that of the many subcommittees within the club, the education committee is held especially near and dear to members’ hearts. There is a strong relationship between the Woman’s Club and the Exeter Township School District. Some of the ways club members give back to the district is by providing books to every new kindergarten student each year, as well as by presenting scholarships to graduating students during the high school’s annual awards banquet.

• Food bank contributions: Canned goods and non-perishable items are collected and donated to the local food bank. The effort becomes extra-special at Christmastime when shoebox gifts for children are created and gifted to brighten their spirits. The boxes contain a collection of small items and goodies from personal hygiene products to books, puzzles, crayons, pens and more. During the holiday, when families come to collect their meal, they are also presented with this shoebox gift for their children.

• Local and international outreach: Gail says, “The more memberships we have, the more we can do for our communities.” She continues, “We also help The Red Cross and international organizations and other community needs outside of Exeter. We are more universal than it sounds like we are.” This year the club has given support to the Ukrainian church to help those in need.

Spreading Holiday Cheer

On Valentine’s Day, members show love and appreciation to local Veterans by crafting Valentine cards containing special messages accompanied by a delicious piece of chocolate. The cards are personally delivered to the Lebanon VA Medical Center to hand out to patients. Gail says, “At Valentine’s we recognize the Veterans and tell them how much we care that they loved us enough to do what they did.”

A variety of fundraisers are held by the club year-round, including a Christmas Cookie Sale this holiday season. Check them out online to see which strikes a chord with you. More info can be found at womansclubofexeter.com.

Did you Know? Prior to township recycling services, the club started its own recycling endeavors in 1990. Though rigorous work, they continued for five years until the township took over.

Beautifying the Area. The Woman’s Club keeps the Trolley stop in Mt. Penn fresh with flowers and TLC. They also adorn the area with decorations during the holiday season.

FUN FACTS.
Serving the Community:

Gordon May President/CEO, CONCERN

CONCERN is a locally-based nonprofit agency offering services in more than 14 cities in Pennsylvania and one city in Maryland. President and CEO Gordon May is proud to lead an organization that brings hope, opportunities and positive change to the communities it serves.

Why did you decide to take on this role at CONCERN? I love CONCERN’s mission, and the organization offers an array of social services for the community. But what really drew me to CONCERN was the foster and adoption services. A lot of places that offer the same social services don’t also offer foster and adoption services. These services hit home for me because I was adopted by my grandparents.

What makes CONCERN’s mission special? Our mission is, “Bring hope, offer opportunities and inspire change.” Other organizations offer the same services, but how we deliver those services is different because it’s informed by our mission. We truly believe our work isn’t just to provide services, but it’s also to offer our families hope, opportunity and change. We live our mission; it’s more than just a job.

How can someone who is interested in fostering or adopting a child contact CONCERN? We’re always looking for people to be foster parents or adoptive parents in Pennsylvania and Maryland. We also offer “foster to adopt,” a path for people who start out as foster parents and then decide to adopt. If you’re interested, you can go to our website to learn more about the process, requirements and resources we provide for you. Once you complete an application, a recruiter will work with you throughout the entire process.

What other services does CONCERN offer? We offer services such as residential behavioral and substance abuse treatment facilities, case management, parenting education, household management education and various behavioral health services such as family-based mental health services, school programs and crisis interventions. You can learn about and connect with these services on our website, and we have relationships with school districts so their counselors can also provide referrals. Our services are available to everyone in the community.

It sounds like CONCERN has great services offered by people who truly care. What do you like most about working for this organization? I love talking to people and being out and about at events and at our different offices. I love interacting with staff and the kids and hearing their stories and seeing the wonderful work everyone is doing. I wish I could do more of that.

You certainly love what you do, and it keeps you busy. When you’re not working, how do you relax and have fun? Spending time with my kids and family is how I have fun. My daughters play softball in school, so I get to spend a lot of time coaching them and traveling with them for games.

LEARN MORE.

Families needed. According to the Pennsylvania Statewide Adoption & Permanency Network, there are approximately 15,000 kids waiting for foster parents and 2,500 kids waiting to be adopted in Pennsylvania.

Holiday Gifting Made Easy

Tis the season to Go Buy Berks — gift cards, that is. In July, the Greater Reading Chamber Alliance (GRCA) launched a new way for Berks County to shop local and support our small business community.

GO BUY BERKS is a community gift card program designed to support local stores and service providers and keep them top-of-mind when buying gift cards for friends, relatives or colleagues. Available as a plastic card shipped to the purchaser or as an e-card downloaded to a computer or phone, the Go Buy Berks community gift card can be used at any Berks County business that accepts MasterCard.

The idea for a community-based gift card originated from Berks County Commissioner Michael Rivera, who saw a need to further support small, local businesses.

“The Go Buy Berks gift card will provide a gift card option for merchants that do not have the ability to provide a store-branded card of their own. This new program will drive dollars to many local small businesses that would otherwise miss out on the gift card option,” Rivera explains.

This all-in-one gift card program is designed to keep your money local and to support Berks County businesses. Rather than choosing a generic card off the rack, the public can purchase the Go Buy Berks card in any amount starting at $10. Bulk purchases are also available for employers looking to incentivize or gift their employees. The card also allows the giftee the flexibility of deciding where to use the card and the ability to support multiple businesses.

Participating businesses are listed on the Go Buy Berks shopping map and directory on the gift card webpage at giverrang.com/gift-card/greater-readingpa/. Berks County businesses that accept MasterCard are welcome to participate at no cost. The plastic card is processed as a normal gift card, and the e-card is presented to the merchant as a certificate voucher that is printed or downloaded on a phone. The only fee a merchant incurs is the MasterCard processing fee through their point-of-sale (POS) system.

“Our goal in launching this program is simple – to provide an easy option for the community to use local businesses first and enjoy the wonderful shopping, dining and services they provide,” says Julie Larison,

Senior Director of Membership Services, GRCA. GRCA welcomes the participation of main street associations and other community groups in Berks County that want to list businesses in the directory. Nonmember businesses who would like to be listed in the Go Buy Berks community gift card program directory may contact Larison at 610.898.7785 or JLarison@greaterreading.org. Having your business listed in the directory is the easiest way to let consumers know that you are accepting the Go Buy Berks gift card.

The next time you need a holiday gift, support local businesses and buy a Go Buy Berks gift card!

UPCOMING EVENT.

THE PRESIDENT’S

ucked in a wooded glade back a lengthy lane in Bern Township stands a nearly two-century-old stately Georgian revival manor house where, truly, the spirited presences of Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana rule the domain.

The house, built in 1840 by a prominent Berks limestone quarry owner, has pretty much from its start been a center of social life for the region’s industrial, civic and social leaders. Its architecture – both original and later additions – have drawn praise in the profession.

And, for the past dozen years, the property has gained an academic distinction as well: it is the official Alvernia University president’s residence.

The property is known as Cedar Hill Farms, located off the aptly named Cedar Hill Drive. It was gifted to Alvernia by Carolyn and Jerome Holleran in 2010. The couple well recalls the day they informed then Alvernia President Thomas Flynn of the offer.

“Jerry and I always felt we were the Cedar Hill caretakers, and we didn’t want to sell it to someone who would divide it up,” says Carolyn. “We had a close relationship with Alvernia University (both had served on the board and Carolyn as chair), and we knew they were thinking about a president’s house.”

LIVING IN STYLE SECOGES PHOTOGRAPHICS
T
42 NOVEMBER 2022 | berkscountyliving.com

An Offer He Couldn’t Refuse

The Hollerans invited Flynn over and made the offer.

“It was the only time I ever saw Tom Flynn’s mouth drop,” she says with a laugh.

Factoring into the needs for a president’s house: an impressive residence to attract quality candidates for university leadership and a property to be well utilized for offcampus gatherings of students, faculty, alumni and community members.

Flynn and his wife were the first presidential occupants. The house is now occupied by John Loyack, current Alvernia president.

Loyack clearly loves the property and has been hands-on in tackling some of the upkeep. Case in point: during the confines of COVID in the summer of 2020, he and his partner Theresa took on the clearing of the courtyard area.

“We took out 30 wheelbarrows of overgrowth and redid some of the plantings,” he recalls. Tables and chairs, a settee and a patio fire pit along with a ram’s head gargoyle feeding water to a ground-level trough make the limestonesurround courtyard a pleasant place for small meetings, professional or personal.

Nearby is a sizeable swimming pool, an amenity not just for the president’s pleasure, but also a joyful spot for university gatherings, including a party for RAs (resident assistants) just prior to the start of the 2022-23 academic year.

Loyack’s affection for the residence is clear. His favorite respite is the library, part of the 1919 wing addition.

“It’s where I normally retreat to,” he says. “It’s got a fireplace and it’s a very cozy place in the winter.”

He appreciates the expanse and the amenities of the house.

“I have three adult children,” he says, “and it’s a nice place for everyone to meet up. We’ve had some nice holiday gatherings here.”

A Storied Past

Cedar Hill Farm, a designated Historic Site of Berks County, has been family oriented from the start.

According to the 1988 Book of Bern, the circa 1840 original stone house was constructed for his family by William Silvus, who operated nearby limestone quarries. A datestone near

the roofline offers testimony to that. It was built in the Georgian style with three and one-half stories, a center hall and stone walls 22 inches thick.

As properties do, it changed hands and was acquired in 1912 by Stanley Bright, a local hardware distributor. Bright’s wife, Sarah H. Gilpin Bright, was a Philadelphian. She engaged then noted Philadelphia architect Richardson Brognard Okie, Jr. to reconfigure the home in the style of a country manor, something for which he was renowned.

Okie was particularly known for his appreciation of early American Colonial Revival architecture and his skill and determination in “modernizing” structures, focused on utilizing the materials and styles of the original buildings. His work proliferated among the moneyed and prominent property owners, especially in Bucks County and the Brandywine Valley.

Among his clients were Supreme Court Justice Owen J. Roberts, U.S. Attorney General Philander C. Knox, Delaware Gov. C. Douglas Buck, Ernst R. Behrend, founder of the Hammermill Paper Company, and Joseph Hergesheimer of West Chester, a popular 1920s American novelist. Okie undertook the restoration of both the Betsy Ross House in Philadelphia and the 1930 restoration of Pennsbury Manor, William Penn’s home in Morrisville, Bucks County, now a museum of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.

Okie added two-and-one-half-story wings on either side of the original house for the Brights, one in 1915 and the other in 1919.

The remodeled home was featured in an issue of American Country Homes magazine. Okie reportedly got additional work in Berks as a result. An interesting side note about the Brights: the couple’s son, Major John Gilpin Bright, was an American aviator in China during World War II, serving as a member of the famous “Flying Tigers.”

Making a ‘Mistake’ a Home

There were owners after the Brights, and it was in the early 1980s that the then increasingly ramshackle property caught the attention of Jerome Holleran who thought it an ideal house

for him and Carolyn and their newly blended family of six children (three hers, three his).

“We looked at the house and thought it had real possibilities,” says Jerome. “We took a tour and said ‘Let’s buy it and renovate it.’”

Carolyn’s mother had quite a different opinion. “She told us: ‘You’re making a terrible mistake,’” remembers Carolyn.

Her mother’s response may have made a lot of sense considering the condition of the house.

“Yes, but here we were with seven bathrooms and only one toilet and one sink worked – in separate bathrooms,” says Carolyn. “We had a pre-renovation party for friends and had to make that clear to everyone.”

Post-party, the Hollerans cleared out items “left behind for them” by the seller, but Jerome did insist on keeping the garden tractor to keep the grass at bay.

“We went room to room,” recalls Carolyn. “Every room needed work — from electricity to plumbing to painting.”

The couple pretty much maintained the configuration of the rooms in the main house and the wings, honoring both the 19 th and 20 th century craftsmanship of thick plaster walls, solid woodwork including floor-to- ceiling raised wall panels, raised-panel door and window trims and chair rails, stair cases and railings, ceiling beams and the many built-in cabinets, including a generous china cabinet in the dining room.

Every room had its own fireplace – a necessity in earlier days to keep such a huge house toasty – and those stayed.

The kitchen, they say, was the “biggest problem” and was reconfigured out of three rooms. The result is a large, airy space with French doors leading to the deck and an attached gazebo. A friend’s concept drawing came to life in part thanks to a Bechtelsville cabinet maker’s expertise.

“It was the only place where we had walls

removed,” says Carolyn.

An old cast iron bell off the kitchen area left behind became instrumental in calling the couple’s six children and guests to meals.

Setting the Bar

Jerome particularly fell in love with the ground level where the Brights had their nursery.

“I had an Irish bar built there,” he says. The original fireplaces remain intact. A large leather sofa faces one, and the other is flanked by comfortable chairs facing the wood bar. A variety of steins grace the fireplace mantel catacorner to a shelf filled with colorful beer taps. On one side of the shelf is a Sunshine Beer sign with a Reading Premium Beer counterpart on the other. The home’s utility room is hidden behind a period wooden door.

Alvernia has honored Jerome by calling his beloved bar “Holleran’s,” and it has become a favored entertaining venue with its impressive slate flooring with doors that open to a covered brick patio that runs the length of the house.

The Hollerans note that the extensive renovations, infrastructure and cosmetic, were not cheap. And they did not move in until 1985, two years after the purchase.

“We put three times what we paid (for the property) into the renovations,” Carolyn says.

But, they didn’t stop with the house. One of the attractions of the property was its river access. In the days when Felix Dam was a part of the Schuylkill waterscape, the Hollerans, like so many others, enjoyed the recreational water sports offered by the pooled water. But when the circa 1845 wooden dam splintered in the wake of ice damage in 1998 and was breeched by Hurricane Floyd the following year, the shallow water level changed things.

So, in 1999 the Hollerans had a large pool built to the rear of the house, just past the courtyard. It was a favorite of the couple’s children’s growing families.

Three years later, in 2002, a deteriorating stable gave way to a new two-level multivehicle garage. Jerome, an avid and accomplished artist, made the upper level his studio.

The Hollerans, community leaders and philanthropists, opened the property to scores of nonprofit gatherings and fundraisers during their occupancy of Cedar Hill.

Time for a Change

As a quarter century-plus passed and their children now adults and long on their own, the Hollerans began to notice there was a lot of space they just weren’t really using.

“It got to the point where we were only basically using four rooms, and this was telling us it was time for a change,” she says. “We were then 70 and 72 so it was to The Highlands or a smaller house.”

The house won out – and it was an enviable accomplishment: the first LEED-certified new residential construction in Berks and the fourth in Pennsylvania. Located on an unspoiled property that was owned by Carolyn’s son abutting the Cacoosing Creek in Spring Township, the house, featured in the April 2010 issue of Berks County Living, is a homage to the creature comfort for the humans who call it home and the native flora and fauna who live compatibly on the grounds. Its clean contemporary lines and use of native wood and stone material and solar and natural energy make a visit memorable from the moment the huge front door swings open.

Once the downsizing was determined, the offer of Cedar Hill was made and graciously accepted by the Alvernia board and its then leader Cathy Herbein, a friend of the couple. In addition to gifting the property, the Hollerans provided an endowment to help maintain its pristine condition.

“The best way to take care of it was to keep it in the same state,” says Jerome, “so we included the funds for maintenance and upkeep.”

Maintaining Ties

The Flynns resided at Cedar Hill for more than a decade. Alvernia did some landscaping updates to accommodate gatherings. The open field provides lots of space for visitors’ vehicles, but seasonal rain storms have created some infrequent muddy challenges along the way.

Loyack loves both the rural quality of the 13acre property as well as what he calls “the Old City Philadelphia” inspired by Okie’s attention to colonial and Georgian design influences.

“He clearly ‘manorized’ this house when he added the wings,” says Loyack.

The wings aligned to create an open concept feel long before the term became part of décor vernacular. One can peer straight through the first floor from the end of one wing, through the original house to the end of the opposite wing.

Loyack first saw the house in the winter. Sans leaves he could peer through the trees to the river.

LIVING IN STYLE

“My last stop in the three days of the interview process was to Cedar Hill,” he says. “Tom and Helen Flynn showed off the residence, and it was clear they loved it and would miss it.”

Loyack returned in the spring when the property was literally blossoming.

“I always think this house has two seasons: the blooming season outdoors and the inside season with the fireplaces blazing,” he says. “It’s almost like it has two personalities.”

Which brings us back to the subject of Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana... indeed, their spirited presences do dominate the Loyack occupancy of Cedar Hill. But lest a reader thinks the recently deceased British monarch or the late Princess of Wales are resident apparitions, well, that is absolutely not the case. These noble names belong to Loyack’s two corgis, the longtime favored breed of the queen. Their names were inspired by The Crown, a Netflix series about the British royals. The corgis are sisters and Loyack describes them as very social and addicted to attention they receive from the family or during university gatherings.

“They love to herd and chase, whether it’s deer, rabbits, squirrels, you name it,” he says. “They’re either in full gear or pooped out in front of a fireplace.”

Loyack says the connection between the Hollerans and Cedar Hill remains strong a dozen years after their departure.

“We get together every two months or so,” he says. “Carolyn loves to reminisce about her children running around.”

The extensive Holleran family returns every summer to gather and enjoy the pool. All 10 grandchildren especially enjoyed their summers splashing away from babyhood on.

And one granddaughter, come 2023, will add a new memory to that bank when her wedding will take place at Cedar Hill.

“There are so many memories for our family,” says Carolyn, “and we are looking forward to this new one.”

Grind Restaurant UNIQUELY DELICIOUS

In a vibrant corner of Berks County (near the Montgomery County border), and just a few blocks away from the Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles, is a shining star of fine dining called Grind Restaurant. Owner Keith Kopicki modestly prefers to call Grind “upscale but approachable!” It’s quirky and interesting in the most fabulous ways. Where else can one order a Bourbon Flight from an extensive list of elegant bourbons? You’ll find an entire Gourmet Meatballs section on the menu, where you select your preferred protein sources and enticing, original sauces. The steak and seafood selections are best-of-the-best, sourced from high-end suppliers. Honestly, the filet mignon cuts like butter, practically melting in your mouth with flavor. (Kudos to Chef Dan! Wow.) But that’s just the beginning. Kopicki says most of his meals take inspiration from Northern Italy and the Mediterranean. “I didn’t want to do the ordinary meatballs and other foods,” he says. And this man is as good as his word: In the three years the cocktail bar and restaurant has been open, Grind has steadily expanded its unique offerings. With Chef Sam at the helm, every dish seems designed for sheer tastebud excitement.

The interior is large and open yet cozy in feeling, adorned with vintage boards on one wall that evoke nostalgic memories of local covered bridges. The tables are heavy wood, while chairs are metal-edged with black leather seats. Dress casually or dress up — whatever suits you. As for service, the friendly staff makes sure diners feel immediately welcome.

MILANESE

Gourmet Meatballs and Milanese Cigars

Before anything else, do try one of the legendary cocktails from Grind’s stellar bar, such as “Our Old Fashioned” made with sweet-soft Resurgent Young American Bourbon and orange-cherry notes, or a “Santa Margherita” made with Jose Cuervo Reposado Tequila, so lip-refreshing with its strawberry-basil approach. The list of special cocktails, wines and beers is impressive.

Then whet the appetite with one of Grind’s “most popular” starters: hot Crab Corsica dip featuring claw crab and cream cheese, Monterey jack cheese, spinach and pickled artichoke. So indulgent. Another fave is Stuffed Mushroom, delivering spicy Italian sausage with Romano and mozzarella. The Milanese Cigars are slender, pretty, rolled pastry puffs served warm and wrapped around fresh asparagus spears, prosciutto and sharp provolone cheese. Lemon-caper aioli dazzles aromatically as the cigars swoop artfully across the plate. Each bite provides an array of textures and tastes, from crispy crunch to soft melt, salty to tangy.

Since the Gourmet Meatballs are a big deal here, it makes perfect sense to order some as a starter if you’re not making them your main entrée, that is (e.g., the Grinder or the Meatball Bowl are full-scale meals). Simply ask for Crispy Polenta Cakes, a great way to sample three separate juicy meatballs perched atop perfectly baked polenta cubes. Consider sharing two beef meatballs plus one chicken meatball, or try two crab meatballs plus a shrimp one, or whatever protein is seasonally available.

Grind’s cooks take care to maintain optimal moisture in each luscious meatball. Says Kopicki, cremini mushrooms help ensure moist texture in the beef meatballs. They’re also slightly sweet thanks to a well-integrated mixture of caramelized onions, herbs and Romano. Dip them in Spicy Arrabiata sauce for tomato-y heat, and then douse a second morsel in a hearty, rich, bacon-Gouda cheese sauce. A lovely “Sweet Pepper Cream” sauce truly enhances the whitemeat Chicken Meatball, which melds garden rosemary, garlic, lemon zest and Parmesan.

Seafood Manicotti; Crispy Skinned Salmon

The tide is high for seafood lovers here, with such tempting choices as Shrimp Fra Diavolo, Seared Scallops on creamy risotto and a wonderful Seafood Manicotti. The latter is not a dish you’ll easily find elsewhere. Made with fresh pasta, the four hand-rolled manicotti tubes are stuffed with ricotta cheese, backfin lump crab, sauteed shrimp, garlic, spinach and white wine, and cooked with a roasted red pepper cream.

Salmon is given a classy bourbon flair in a winning presentation. Picture a 10-ounce

gorgeous filet of pink-sunset-colored salmon meat, tender and flaky to the touch, pan-seared and covered end-to-end with a crispy skin and bourbon topping. Such a treat to savor the full, rich sensation that salmon can deliver when skin is treated like a jeweled crown on the king.

From Choice Cut NY Strip and Filet to Spaghetti Il Ortagio

Seeking that special-occasion steak dinner but hoping to please the whole dinner party? There’s something for everyone: Lamb Osso Buco, Chicken Florentine, Cavatappi Primavera… the list goes on. Spaghetti squash gets roasted for a super-healthy dish, Spaghetti Il Ortagio, with Italian greens, mushrooms, crispy chickpeas, garlic, onions and carrots.

But… back to that steak! The Filet Mignon is truly outstanding, served with a scoop of compound butter and roasted red potatoes, plus honey-roasted, gently herbed carrots.

Desserts vary by season, so save space for the last course — possibly Chocolate Mousse or a very old-fashioned, unforgettable Strawberry Shortcake.
