This Taxing Season By John Hall for Blue Mountain Town and Country Gazette
Winter is often a “taxing” season. Certainly the weather and dealing with the very cold and often icy conditions it brings can tax our ability to do even normal, everyday things. But this time of year is also part of the tax season, specifically when it comes to the advance work we have to do to prepare our taxes correctly before we file. In this issue we’re going to actually focus on taxes in two or three ways. First of all, just straightforward tax prep tips. We’re also going to 255E South Best Ave. Walnutport, PA 18088

look at what our tax dollars pay for, from the local to the federal levels. People are often curious about that. To start, be sure and read “Prepare Now: Tax Prep Tips” to learn more about how to organize your tax records before filing and the advantages you will gain by doing that. We also give you tips in that article on how to avoid refund delays. The information you’ll find there is directly from the IRS. We also have an article with tax tips for seniors. Did you know that if you are 65 or older you might get a larger “standard deduction” depending on your filing circumstances? If you usually itemize your deductions, the larger standard deduction might make that no longer necessary. Find out more in “Tax Breaks for Seniors.” As mentioned above, people often wonder what it is exactly that their taxes pay for. Well, we take a look at that at both the local and state levels, as well as the federal level in “What Services Do My Taxes Pay For?” Getting back to the taxing weather of the season, in many cases, it’s a season that hits the elderly the hardest. When harsh weather hits, the elderly Continued on page 4

often don’t get out, many times because they literally, physically can’t get out of their homes safely. That can mean their food or medications run low. That can also mean they get very lonely with the “winter blues.” In “Helping the Elderly this Winter,” we take a look at some the things we can all do to check in with the elderly, whether relatives or neighbors, to help them out and make
sure they’re in good shape. And finally, in “Taking Advantage of Winter” we look at activities that you can only do in winter, or are just that much more fun and special in winter. These range from sledding and ice skating, to baking with friends and relatives and spending cozy afternoons curled up with hot chocolate and movies. Every season has special activities that go with it, and winter is no different. So even though we’re in the dead of winter, the second half of January has plenty of things to do and enjoy. Onward we go!

Prepare Now: Tax Prep Tips SOURCE: irs.gov (edited)
Organized tax records make preparing a complete and accurate tax return easier. It helps you avoid errors that lead to processing delays that can slow your refund and may also help you find overlooked deductions or credits. Wait to file until you have all your tax records, including: • Forms W-2 from your employer(s) • Forms 1099 from banks, issuing agencies and other payers including unemployment compensation, dividends, distributions from a pension, annuity or retirement plan • Form 1099-K, 1099-MISC, W-2 or other income statement if you worked in the gig economy • Form 1099-INT if you were paid interest • Other income documents and records of virtual currency transactions • Form 1095-A, Health Insurance Marketplace Statement, to reconcile advance Premium Tax Credits for Marketplace coverage • Letter 6419, 2021 Total Advance Child Tax Credit Payments to reconcile your advance Child Tax Credit payments • Letter 6475, Your 2021 Economic Impact Payment, to determine whether you're eligible to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit Notify the IRS if your address changes and notify the Social Security Administration of a legal name change. Taxable Income Remember, most income is taxable. This includes: • unemployment income, • refund interest, • income from the gig economy, and • virtual currencies. Reconcile Advance Child Tax Credit Payments If you received advance Child Tax Credit payments, when you file your 2021 tax return, you will need to compare those payments that you received during 2021 with the amount of the Child Tax Credit that you can properly claim on your 2021 tax return. tax refund that will include your Child Tax Credit is by filing electronically and choosing direct deposit. If you received less than the amount that you're eligible for, you'll claim a credit for the remaining amount of Child Tax Credit on your 2021 tax return. eligible for, you may need to repay some or all of that excess payment when you file. In January 2022, the IRS will send you Letter 6419 to provide the total amount of advance Child Tax Credit payments that you received in 2021. You need to keep this and any other IRS letters you received about advance CTC payments your tax records and refer to them when you file. Avoid Refund Delays Many different factors can affect the timing of
your refund after the IRS receives your return. Although the IRS issues most refunds in less than 21 days, the IRS cautions taxpayers not to rely on receiving a refund by a certain date, especially when making major purchases or paying bills. Some returns may require additional review and may take longer. Refunds for people claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) can't be issued before mid-February. The law requires the IRS to hold the entire refund − even the portion not associated with EITC or ACTC.

Tax Breaks for Seniors
SOURCE: Various
The U.S. tax code offers quite a few tax breaks exclusively to older adults, including a special tax credit just for seniors. As you prepare your taxes as a senior or retiree this year, be sure to visit www. irs.gov to make sure you are capturing all the tax breaks available to you. As a senior or retiree, one of the key decisions you will need to make is whether or not to take the standard deduction, versus fully itemizing

your deductions. That’s a decision many would have to make, but as a senior or retiree there are special considerations. Here is some of the information that applies. Larger Standard Deduction As a senior you won't have to pay taxes on as much of your income, because the IRS allows you to begin taking an additional standard deduction when you turn age 65. There is some “fine print.” For tax year 2021 – the tax return you file in 2022 – you can add an extra $1,700 to the standard deduction you’re otherwise eligible for, as long as you are unmarried and not a surviving spouse. You can add $1,350 for each spouse who is age 65 or older if you’re married and file a joint return. Calculating the bigger standard deduction is made easier with Form 1040-SR, “U.S. Tax Return for Seniors.” The special tax return for those 65 and older includes a simple-to-use standard deduction chart at the bottom of the form. And for those who still use paper forms – electronic filing is highly recommended for speed and security – the 1040-SR form is much easier to read than the standard 1040, thanks to a larger font size for the text. Standard Deduction vs. Itemized Deductions You have a choice to make between claiming the standard deduction and itemizing your deductions, because you can't do both. The standard deduction is the deduction you can claim before you claim the extra bonus deduction for being age 65 or older. Once you know your final number in that area you can better decide whether to go with the standard or itemize. Visit the IRS website to determine the standard deduction allowed for your filing status. It’s very possible the standard deduction plus the extra bonus deduction for age will work out to be more than any itemized expenses you can

currently Alabama, Hawaii, Illinois, Mississippi, and our very own Pennsylvania. How do you earn tax breaks in your retirement years? Once you turn 65, you automatically have the larger standard deduction available. If applicable, when you reach age 70 and a half, you can also reduce your tax liability by giving some of your IRA distributions directly to a charity. This counts toward your required minimum distributions. Do you have to pay income tax after age 70? A portion of your income from Social Security, pensions, disability, and annuities is nontaxable, but if you make more than the limits, you will still have to pay some taxes after age 70. claim. This is particularly true if your mortgages have been paid off and you don't have that itemized interest deduction any longer. But you could gain a larger deduction for itemizing if you still have a mortgage and factor in things like property taxes, medical bills, charitable donations, and any other deductible expenses you might have. Miscellaneous Questions Which states provide the best tax breaks for retirees? Many states exempt Social Security income from taxation and some states don't tax income at all. What Services Do Our Taxes Pay For?

With each tax payment you make, whether for federal income taxes or local property taxes, you should pause to consider the benefits associated with these various tax payments. Taxes, including federal, state and local taxes, fund myriad projects and initiatives to help benefit the collective group. Federal Taxes With roots dating back to 1861, the federal income tax helps finance a wide range of initiatives and programs. Federal taxes help pay for defense and security programs. This can include costs related to supporting war efforts and operating security programs at home and abroad. Your federal tax dollars also go to finance Social Security payments, various health insurance programs and programs meant to help citizens survive difficult times. These programs include Medicaid, Medicare and tax credit opportunities, such as the earnedincome credit and child tax credit.

programs and assistance for low-income individuals. Other recipients of state tax revenue include transportation projects, such as fixing roads and building new transportation systems. In addition, state tax revenues go to fund the jails and correction facilities within the state. Local Taxes Local taxes -- including property taxes, sales tax and local income taxes -- help finance various local projects and initiatives. This can include economic

development projects to help attract businesses to the area. Local tax dollars also help develop and support various resources and projects focused on providing educational and extracurricular activities in low-income neighborhoods. Local tax revenue also helps support area schools and maintains county and city parks and natural resources. Other Considerations When considering where tax dollars go, think about the public services that local, state, regional and national agencies provide for the community as a whole. This includes helping fund police and fire departments. Other services range from helping pay employees to upgrading equipment when necessary. Tax dollars also help support trash collection in some cities and snow removal in areas prone to winter snow.

Taking Advantage of Winter

The most dreaded part of the winter season is the weather, especially the freezing cold, ice and

snow we are all familiar with. However, there are lovely activities to do that are usually associated with, or exclusive to this time of year. These include activities that take advantage of the cold, while others you can do in the comfort of your home. Sledding Sledding is such a fun and inexpensive activity to do with family and friends. One fun component of sledding is deciding whether you want to buy a sled, or use a makeshift sled. If you decide to make your own sled, there are quite a few household items and everyday things that can work to make a sled for one person. Consider things such as the top of a trash can, tote tops, tote boxes and more. It’s really all up to your imagination. No matter which way you go, you can also make an activity out of customizing your sled. Ice Skating Those who enjoy or are talented at ice skating deserve applause because the benefits are many. This is an activity that requires one to keep their balance while moving on the ice wearing a pair of skates with blades on the bottom. It’s important Continued on page 14

to remember that ice skate blades aren’t excessively sharp but can still cause harm if skaters aren’t careful. Unlike roller skating which has four wheels, ice skates just utilize a single blade and that makes it easier for skaters to fall. Nonetheless, it’s an activity that people should try at least once. Baking Baking is something people can pick up as a hobby at any time, but it’s around the holidays
and through the winter that baked goods tend to be on full display. This is an enjoyable winter activity to do indoors. Beyond enjoying sweet treats and maybe stuffing our faces, it can be interesting and heartwarming to participate and learn from family members or friends by helping them prepare their recipes and also sharing the secrets of your own. At the very least it’s a nice gesture to provide your assistance to friends and relatives in the kitchen and then also be proud of something you helped to make. Hot Chocolate and Movies This is the most basic activity out of the bunch and arguably the most universal in its appeal. Whether you have a big or small family, or just want to relax on your own, staying in for a hot chocolate and a movie is a perfect way to take advantage of a winter’s day. Start by grabbing a cup of hot chocolate in your favorite mug and customize it just the way you like it, whether with marshmallows, whipped cream or shaved chocolate. Then get cozy on the couch or prop yourself up in bed and watch your favorite films or a recent Hollywood release. Some may see this activity as boring, but at its core, it’s hard to beat.

Helping the Elderly This Winter SOURCE: heattrak.com (edited) The three main dangers that the elderly face each winter are: slip-and-fall accidents with resulting fractures and other injuries; hypothermia, which greatly i n c re a s e s the chances of heart attacks and strokes; and being stranded alone after a heavy snowstorm. Six ways you can help your elderly neighbors or relatives avoid such dangers and make it safely through the winter are as follows: 1. Plan to Help; Don't Wait for Them to Ask Most seniors have lived very independently for

most of their lives and are not used to asking others for assistance. Many times, they may feel like they are bothering you if they ask for help, or they may sometimes be too proud to ask for help. So make a plan to reach out to them. Don’t expect them to make the first move. 2. Check on Them Before and After Storms Stay up-to-date on weather forecasts, and check that your elderly neighbors or relatives are doing well just before and immediately following blizzards, ice storms, and power outages. If they are snowed in for a time and alone, make sure they have a battery-powered radio, a first-aid kit, their prescription medications, and all other necessary supplies. 3. Keep in Contact With Them Regularly It’s not just storms that can be hazardous to seniors; even ordinary winter weather can be a challenge. Try to exchange phone numbers with them so you can be in touch frequently, or walk over and check up on your neighbor or relative at least once a week. Ask if they are feeling in good health and find out if they have things like smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and operational heat and water. Continued on page 17

Helping the Elderly Continued from page 15
4. Try to Keep Them from Shoveling and Walking on Ice Snow shoveling can burden the heart and raise blood pressure and is dangerous for many seniors. Consider shoveling their walk and driveway for them. As slipping can occur on even a small patch of ice, make sure you salt and sand wherever appropriate. You might also encourage them to invest in snow-melting mats, which you could lay out for them on their walkways, ensuring their paths stay clear and slip-free all winter. 5. Try to Keep Them from Venturing Outside A breath of fresh air may do everyone some good, but in the wintertime, the elderly can easily get frostbite or hypothermia if outside in freezing temperatures for very long. You can bring the mail and newspaper to your elderly neighbor's or relative’s door, and pick up groceries or other items for them on your way home from work to minimize their time out in the cold. 6. Share a Hot Meal with Your Neighbor Hot food, particularly soups and chili, can warm up the body and lower the risk of hypothermia in
the winter. Consider inviting your neighbor or relative over for a meal or take it to them to eat in their home. While you don't want to be seen as a "pesky neighbor," you do want to be a helpful one. Most seniors who live alone enjoy every chance they get to converse with a friend or relative and have to fight hard to ward off the "winter blues." Red Cross: National blood crisis may put patients at risk Dire situation facing blood supply, those in need of blood transfusions. Donors have the chance to help save lives, win trip to Super Bowl LVI Submitted by LISA LANDIS
The American Red Cross is facing a national blood crisis – its worst blood shortage in more than a decade. Dangerously low blood supply levels are posing a concerning risk to patient care and forcing doctors to make difficult decisions about who receives blood transfusions and who will need to wait until more products become available.
Blood and platelet donations are critically needed to help prevent further delays in vital medical treatments, and donors of all blood types – especially type O − are urged to make an appointment now to give in the weeks ahead. In recent weeks, the Red Cross had less than a one-day supply of critical blood types and has had to limit blood product distributions to hospitals. At times, as much as one-quarter of hospital blood needs are not being met. Pandemic challenges The Red Cross continues to confront relentless challenges due to COVID-19, including about a 10% overall decline in the number of people donating blood as well as ongoing blood drive cancellations and staffing limitations. Additionally, the pandemic has contributed to a 62% drop in blood drives at schools and colleges. “Winter weather across the country and the recent surge of COVID-19 cases are compounding

the already-dire situation facing the blood supply,” said Dr. Baia Lasky, medical director for the Red Cross. “Please, if you are eligible, make an appointment to give blood or platelets in the days and weeks ahead to ensure no patient is forced to wait for critical care.” Over the next month, about 44.8% of donation appointments remain unfilled in our area. Make an appointment to give blood or platelets as soon as possible by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). The Red Cross and the NFL are partnering this January, during National Blood Donor Month, to urge individuals to give blood or platelets and help tackle the national blood shortage. Those who come to give blood, platelets or plasma in January will automatically be entered for a chance to win a getaway to Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles. As an extra thank-you from the Red Cross, those who come to donate will also be automatically entered to win a home theater package and a $500 e-gift card. Terms apply; visit RedCrossBlood.org/ SuperBowl for more information. Who donations help Kala Breder knows all too well how dire not having blood available can be. In July 2020, hours after the birth of her son by emergency Cesarean
section, Breder developed a complication and began bleeding uncontrollably. As doctors fought to save her life, they exhausted the entire blood supply at the hospital as well as all available blood within a 45-mile radius. Ultimately, she was flown to another hospital because there wasn’t enough blood locally. Volunteers needed In addition to blood donors, the Red Cross also needs the help of volunteers to support critical blood collections across the country. Blood drive volunteers play an important role by greeting, registering, answering questions and providing information to blood donors throughout the donation process. Blood transportation specialists – another volunteer opportunity − provide a critical link between blood donors and blood recipients by delivering blood to hospitals in communities across the country. Blood drive safety Each Red Cross blood drive and donation center follows the highest standards of safety and infection control, and additional precautions – including face masks for donors and staff, regardless of vaccination status – have been implemented to help protect the health of all those in attendance. Donors are asked to schedule an appointment prior to arriving at the drive.

It was built in fine style And well-known in that area. The people from many miles around always Came to this church. All their little children, they also Took with them to church. The chairs were very nice to sit on Yet without soft cushions, And everyone threw a copper penny In the collection. The church was always full on Sundays The members did not fail it Then penny-wise the offering money Still added up substantially. Every month they had punctually Settled with their pastor, And paid all their debts with cash And begged for no money. The greatest unity and love

Existed amongst the people, The pastor and organist Were also well satisfied. For many years it went pleasantly, They were all contend; They did not fight in that church, And never once argued. Then a some of them became negligent And started on the wrong path, Some of them went visiting And others went fishing. The offering soon fell off No money was on hand; The treasurer paid nothing at all And was also not able to. This went on for five months, Then finally the pastor Lost his courage and earnestness And he became negligent. One certainly did not [see] many people In that church, Perhaps two dozen grown-ups And not even a dozen youngsters. There was one Sunday morning In the beginning of summer, When the pastor was most discouraged And weighted down with sorrow. So he said to one man next to him, I want to see you for a bit; And asked him, “Can you , for a while, Loan me a silver dollar?” “Yes!”, replies the man to this pastor –

He was well known by the man – He reaches in his pocket and gives this pastor A dollar in his hand. The pastor then went up to the pulpit With very little commotion, And he opened the Bible And read his text. The Spirit soon began, however, To stir the pastor – The old books of Moses and the prophets – To so seriously explain. He [pounded] at that time on the old pulpit With his fist, And tore to pieces that mean old Satan From head to foot. The sermon was thus remarkable And no one expected it, It deeply touched the people And again, aroused then boldly. He applied his text well And cut left and right [got ’em all!] And this time no man fell asleep, And the women all wept.
Then when the pastor was finished And came down from the pulpit, He [took] that dollar he loaned Back to the man. “Oh my!” said the man, “What are you thinking here? It didn’t serve you any purpose, Yes, you did not have it Like for more than a few minutes!” … [You must wait for the next issue of “Town & Country” to find out how the pastor replied!]
