THE ROTARY CLUB OF READING :

Visit the 41 Annual Daniel Boone Optimist Club Craft Show st

There is no better way to celebrate the start of the season of giving than to support a great cause! On Dec. 2 from 9am-4pm, the Daniel Boone Optimist Club will host its 41st Annual Holiday Craft Show. The club is an international organization self-declared as “Friends of Youth.” Locally, Daniel Boone Optimist Club supports young people in Berks County in many ways. “When people have a need, that’s when we step in,” says Club President Lydia Rieger. The club provides scholarship opportunities to high school seniors, an annual essay contest for youth, community activities such as the trout rodeo, Halloween parades, community tree lighting and much more. The nonprofit hosts many unique fundraisers along the way. “By far, the most popular fundraiser is our holiday craft show,” says Rieger. Hosted at the Daniel Boone Middle School, the show is a place for the whole family to shop for unique homemade gifts and crafts. There will be more than 120 vendors selling items from jewelry and dog treats to holiday décor and everything in between. For more information, visit danielbooneoptimist.com. – SARAH MIES

On Sept. 13, 1913, 52 businessmen from Reading met to establish a rotary club in Reading. Of the 46,000 clubs existing today, the rotary club of Reading was the 88th founded and holds much historical significance worldwide. Over the past 110 years, the members of this club have taken part in countless projects aimed at maintaining Berks County as a fantastic place to live. They purchased land and donated it to the City of Reading to create a new recreational park, supported the construction of a new prison, assisted in reducing pollution in the Schuylkill River and much more. Past-president and Treasurer O. Chris Miller has been part of the club for 20 years and has seen it evolve over time to meet the community’s needs. “When I first joined,” says Miller, “the membership was predominantly men, namely businessmen. It is definitely more diverse now.” The Rotary Club of Reading is always willing to accept more members; those interested can visit readingrotary.org. – SARAH MIES

AN EVERGREEN HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS Stop by Ryeland Gardens in Womelsdorf this December for a special addition to your holiday season. Ryeland Gardens is a beautiful retail nursery owned by Dennis Hurst. Traditionally, Ryeland sells plants, outdoor decorations and garden supplies. But Christmas time is uniquely special to Hurst and his business. From the first Saturday in December to the week before Christmas, Ryeland Gardens hosts a Holiday Open House where the business transforms into a holiday wonderland. Look for greens, wreaths and decorations. “We really try to make it special,” says Hurst. “We truly want people to be happy with what they get. One thing we do to ensure this is cut the greens a day or two before they are sold. We put an emphasis on quality. Everything is fresh and at a fair price.” The Holiday Open House is the last event offered at Ryeland Gardens before it reopens on April 1 for the spring, so take advantage! – SARAH MIES 8

AROUND TOWN genuine care with which he treated students mentees, peers and friends granted him designation as a “guiding light.” Moreover, Brady’s philanthropic and humanitarian imprints are sure to continue their prolific influence for many years to come. In addition to the extraordinary host of honors bestowed for his invaluable contributions to global medicine, he was a passionate champion of the arts, serving prominently on a myriad of art, opera and music committees, from Philadelphia to New Mexico. “There are certainly billionaire collectors and hedge fund managers,” confides Schweigert, “but they’re collecting mostly as an investment; he truly never did that. It was all about that personal connection.” It’s no coincidence then that, as you immerse yourself in the current 65-piece exhibition, you essentially find yourself navigating a most colorful and intimate biographical journey. Poring over this collection feels akin to a personal journal of sorts, chronicling nearly seven decades of life while collecting art.

The Art of Collecting

THE LUTHER W. BRADY BEQUEST BY COURTNEY ELL PHOTOS COURTESY READING PUBLIC MUSEUM Art enthusiasts rejoice! Reading Public Museum (RPM) is celebrating one of the largest gifts the museum has ever received, both in terms of number and value of works bequeathed. “The impact is BIG,” exclaims RPM Art Curator Scott Schweigert. “This takes us from zero to 60 overnight, which is pretty extraordinary. Once this gift happened, it absolutely changed our 20 th-Century collection of American art.” A reflection of esteemed and beloved friend of the museum Dr. Luther W. Brady, the bequest more than doubles his previous gifts to the museum, bringing the total to 228 works. President and founder of the American College of Radiation Oncology, Brady was a revered pioneer and leading expert in the field of radiation oncology. A pinnacle of incomparable expertise, his ceaseless compassion for patients earned him an honorable legacy while the warmth and

THIS TREMENDOUS GIFT Stepping into the exhibit’s first gallery, you’re greeted by a spectral feast of 20 th-and-21stcentury works by a veritable Who’s Who of abstract impressionists. Welcoming you with William A. Smith’s famed authenticity is Portrait of Dr. Luther Brady and a smaller study by Patricia Moss-Vreeland. Multidimensional sculptures dot the periphery of cerebral landscapes as color field paintings are greeted by the whoosh of Hans Hofmann and Thomas Chimes’ sweeping impasto.

Edna Andrade’s hypnotizing Eclipse beckons to Ben Kamihira’s exquisite chiaroscuro lighting as lyrical abstraction dances through works by 1950s studio mates Friedel Dzubas and Helen Frankenthaler. Woody Gwyn’s liberating open roads to New Mexico prompt your gaze toward Paul Pletka’s Potawatomi, swathed by rough hues and a delicate hand immortalizing its stalwart warrior in Native headdress. Indigenous Crow artist Kevin Red Star’s dreamy impressionist-realist blend plays a radical neighbor to Fritz Scholder’s intrepid, galloping marvels.

LEGENDARY GENEROSITY Whether in paint or prose, Brady exemplified legendary generosity and uncompromising stewardship. Surpassing typical patron-artist associations, Brady’s decades-long friendship with RPM makes the realization of this tremendous gift bitter-sweet. “I think he knew what an impact even a portion of his collection would make here,” attests Schweigert. “He had that vision, and it finally became realized.”

FUN FACTS Baby, It’s Cold Outside. Escape winter chills by stoking the fires of your imagination— inside! Treat yourself to The Art of Collecting (through Jan. 7, 2024).

Party Time! Think museums are too “stuffy”? No way! RPM hosts fun for all ages, including Kids’ Night Out events and themed birthday parties.

IN THE LIMELIGHT

Q:

What are you most proud of in your career thus far?

Jason Bishop BY SARAH MATARELLA | PHOTO BY JOHN A. SECOGES, SECOGES PHOTOGRAPHICS The art of magic enthralled notorious illusionist Jason Bishop of Fleetwood from a young age analogous to how he captivates people worldwide, including celebrities. He shares how the foster care system influenced him and how his Berks County roots are steering the next phase of his career.

Q:

How has growing up in the CONCERN foster care system molded you into who you are today?

I have certainly lived a nomadic lifestyle until a few years ago when I bought a house in Berks County, and at the time, I didn't really care where I was. I just traveled. In addition, people with hardships in their lives, like me, have a hard time thinking they deserve their accomplishments. I work for them; I negotiate for them; I achieve them, but I don't just assume I'm going to get them, either. I have seen some people enter entertainment and expect to do well without being willing to make sacrifices, and it doesn’t work out for them.

10

DECEMBER 2023 | berkscountyliving.com

Q:

When did illusion pique your interest?

I must have been six or seven years old, and I saw a man who levitated a woman on TV. I remember thinking, “That's amazing,” and then thinking, “If it's real, then I think he would do it this way.” Fast forward about 15 years, and I was exactly right about how he did it. So, I guess I had a little bit of an aptitude for the industry.

Q:

What is the secret to staying relevant since pursuing magic fulltime at 21 years old?

Looking at my deficits as open-mindedly as possible. My lead assistant and girlfriend, Kim, and I ask ourselves: “Where can we improve? Where can we have

more impact? How do we do a more impressive trick?” We recently revamped a trick that didn't need to be changed, but for us to be more effective, we wanted to change it. And I don't say that lightly because it's a tremendous amount of work bringing in magic advisors and choreographers and learning new software.

might people get Q: What from your show that they would not anticipate?

There are two things: the humor in the show is a big component that people don't expect, and we do a lot of unique, rare or original illusions. One I came up with myself is called The Fog, and it's just a ball of fog that floats around the stage, through a hoop, around me, and then it vanishes at the end.

At 19 years old, I was still in college at Kutztown, and there was a competition called the Battle of Magicians in New Jersey where other top professionals competed. I competed and won the entire competition… I also received the Melbourne Christopher Illusionist Award in September. Melbourne Christopher was an illusionist from the East Coast, and being from Berks County, it's a little sweeter to get an East Coast-based award. It's just ridiculous to be in this rarefied air of the best illusionists and magicians in the country.

Q:

What’s next for the Jason Bishop Show after repeatedly touring the world, hosting Master of Illusion, performing on Broadway and starring in your own shows?

One thing we're trying to do right now is stay a little more local. We've traveled enough now, so we're just trying to perform in Berks County and in the surrounding area more often. We do corporate events, meetings, parties and university events. We’re also headlining the eastern portion of the Masters of Illusion tour through March of 2024.

LEARN MORE Transcend into astonishment. See Jason and Kim LIVE on the Masters of Illusion tour or book them for your next event by visiting thejasonbishopshow.com.

Advice from Jason. If you are talented in the industry you are pursuing, keep going. Your competition might quit tomorrow.

ART ORIGINALS

Intimate Interior

Exaggerations

THE ART OF ERIKA STEARLY BY MARIAN FRANCES WOLBERS Erika Stearly’s watercolor-and-acrylic paintings pack a powerful pull — especially her room interiors. It’s as though you never even knocked on the front door of the house to get in, and yet — trancelike — you’ve beamed deeply into a space tied together tightly with color, yet loose enough to walk around in, where you experience distinct forms in a loving, exaggerated fashion. Stearly’s style is uniquely whimsical, dreamlike and yet utterly down-home intimate. Skewed and off-kilter in places (you may find yourself tilting your head this way and that way to “see” better or differently), each painting is a new view: a chandelier hangs precariously close to a table with red chairs; a bedroom is streaked with turquoise and orange and white light from a window behind; geometrics explode everywhere as squares and circles, swirls and lines define ceiling, walls, rugs and floors. As for objects, a family piano or even an old-time woodstove become protagonists in her works.

Love for Domestic Spaces

Stearly explains her attraction to domestic space: “It’s an opportunity for me to paint geometric shapes, organic shapes and patterns. I’ve found that so long as there’s an architectural detail that people can connect with, they’re willing to go along with whatever else is happening in the painting.” Photographic images provide inspiration, she says, but there are specific guidelines she chooses for just the right room (or house — yes, exteriors, too) to focus on. She seeks out “images that have really large objects and really small objects.” She explains, “If the space, the interior, is too

cluttered — it’s a No. If it’s too empty — No. The floor? That’s necessary. There needs to be a place to walk in: that’s a way to engage with the painting.” Home is a key concept. “One of the things I find interesting is that despite the homes being very specific, they’re also very universal. People will look at an interior, a room, that is not theirs, and say, ‘That reminds me of the house where I grew up, or where I raised my kids, or a room at the beach we used to go to…’ They’re often referring to buildings that they haven’t been in for years.”

A Life in Art

Stearly, who holds an MFA degree in painting, says that making art manifested in her as a child. “Absolutely! I was always going to be making things, painting things. My parents were creative people. My dad is a nurse by trade, but his creativity leans more towards invention than fine arts. My mom has a degree in graphic design, and when I wanted to go into art education, I was encouraged by my parents.” Every year, Stearly creates 120 paintings, which she releases to her mailing list — including numerous international buyers — for sale in August, December and April. “My clients know to expect that. The paintings always sell out!” She also makes custom paintings. To join the list, visit her website.

erikastearly.com

BEHIND THE SCENES – Stearly works part-time at Firefly Bookstore in Kutztown. “I like helping people connect with books,” she says. – “I collect Pennsylvania Dutch cookbooks,” shares Stearly. “I really enjoy Pennsylvania Dutch food!” berkscountyliving.com | DECEMBER 2023

THE LOOK

Cozy Knits BY HEATHER BAVER

There’s a reason cold temps are called sweater weather. Between the variety of yarns and the array of stitches and patterns, knit items are beautiful and cozy. They go beyond sweaters, too, giving you more ways to wear this essential fabric. Envelop yourself in snuggly softness with these 10 items.

1

1. Scandinavian Sensation.

Norwegian knits are renowned for their stunning, intricate patterns. These sweaters will definitely stand out from the crowd with their bold colors. The durable, sustainable merino wool will keep you warm and comfortable, whether you’re running around playing in the snow or relaxing with friends indoors.

Adam Fodor, owner and tattoo artist at Fodor Ink, says he was always into art and started off as a commission portrait artist and an iron worker before becoming a tattoo artist. He insists that if it wasn’t for the tremendous support of his wife and kids, he wouldn’t have taken the leap to start a tattoo shop and quit his day job. Adam recalls it was scary going through that big change because “you go from knowing what you’re going to make one day to not knowing.” What sets Fodor Ink apart from others is its dedication to quality and cleanliness. “Do it the right way, no matter how long it takes” — no shortcuts are allowed. Adam himself specializes in black-and-grey realism portraits, but you can also book with Jess for fine line art, Reese for color art and Kiersten for realism as well. — Isabella Razzano 32 W Main St., Fleetwood 484.277.2545 | fodorink

From The Heart

From The Heart Consignment (FTH) thanks you from the bottom of their hearts for their second win in this category! Carrying everything from designer brands and new retail with tags to home decor, it’s a one-stop-shop to feed your aesthetic appetite. Owner Katherine Scheese takes immense pride in delivering exceptional customer service and supporting those in need. “We call ourselves a retail ministry. Our main purpose is to love on others because that’s exactly what we’re missing in this world,” Scheese says. Since opening in 2014, FTH has donated clothing and funds to 11 charities, including 1,155 purses filled with personal care items for women. Just know that when you buy from the shop, you’re not only supporting a small business but also helping the community. — Emily Johnson 4600 Penn Avenue, Ste. Kelly Spayd BEST PLACE FOR A MASSAGE

Sit back and relax because the “Best Place for a Massage” category is back! And The Salt Lounge is the winner! This wellness center is fit for anyone looking to breathe, de-stress and loosen up. When you visit The Salt Lounge, you will be greeted by “an inviting lobby,” says owner Rachel Eskin, and you will be led to “a massage room or a salt room.” From massages to add-ons like Reiki or halotherapy, the friendly, “very well-trained” staff is devoted to improving your health. If you don’t want to come alone, couple massages are offered. Don’t worry — it’s not only for lovers: you can bring your friend, grandmother or child, as massage therapists here “cater to all ages,” says Rachel. KELLER WILLIAMS PLATINUM REALTY

BEST REALTOR (INDIVIDUAL) When buying a home, you want someone who is going to put their all into giving you what you want while also making the process as seamless as possible. Berks County native Kelly Spayd does exactly that, which is why she earned her second consecutive win in this category. Spayd offers all residential services in Berks, Lancaster and Lehigh counties and is celebrating 18 years as a buyer and seller specialist. All of her business is by referral, which shows just how spectacular she is at what she does. Spayd also gives credit to her two assistants, who, she says, “make a wonderful team.” When asked, “What do you enjoy about your job?” she says, “Other people's happiness makes me happy.” — Autumn Outerbridge 60 Commerce Dr., Wyomissing 610.898.1441 | kellyspayd.com

Dans at Green Hills, once a distant dream by MD Moniruzzaman and Bill Woolworth, wins this award for the sixth time. Step out for a visit and savour outstanding American Cuisine with a French influence alongside passionate, certified servers and chefs ready to provide you with a personalized experience, accommodating all dietary requests. The establishment combines the best of two worlds: professional service that rivals “what you would find in New York City, along with a family feel,” says Monir. Excellent hospitality does not fill bellies, but a multiple-award homemade sweet potato soup is a great start. The unique filet mignon with made-in-house bordelaise, bearnaise, garlic herb butter or demiglace is a highly recommended entrée. To top it all off, Dans offers the largest wine catalogue in Berks County with selections from all around the world. — Alvarino Lin

A first-time winner for Best Local Taco Spot, Taqueria Comalli has the best tacos in town! The business maintains its authenticity while “taking traditional flavors and introducing them in a different way,” says owner Erik Arizmendi. All recipes are made in house, each with its particular fresh, high-quality ingredient inspired by its own background story. Taqueria Comalli offers a customizable menu that includes customer favorites like tacos, burritos, quesadillas and more. Try Erik’s personal favorite, the El Brûlée taco, inspired by his aunt’s rice paired with fresh bananas. It’s made of pulled chicken, mole poblano, double crema queso fresco and brûlée banana, all placed on a Nixtamal tortilla. Pair your meal with a refreshing agua fresca or side dish. FRESH Breakfast | Lunch BEST SPOT FOR BREAKFAST

FRESH Breakfast | Lunch celebrates a first win in this category! The restaurant prides itself on being a nontraditional alternative for various breakfast foods and beverages for anyone looking for options apart from ordinary offerings like simpler eggs, potatoes and meat. “Our choices are more brunch-y, new, modern and original,” says owner Nicholas Kaltsas. The most popular item is the short rib benedict, but there are various specials that change often, from special drinks to main food items, that are enticing as well. Specialty drinks include seasonal flavored options and mimosa with autumn’s apple cider, pomegranate for the holiday season and refreshing watermelon and peach for the summer. Kaltsas personally recommends the short rib tostada and chicken grain bowl for lunch. Menu standouts include the sunrise skillet and homestead hash benedict. — Elizabeth Churchill 614 Penn Avenue, West Reading | 610.396.5143 | freshbreakfastlunch.com 46

A Beautiful

HolidayHome

in Birdland

BY DONNA REED | PHOTOS BY JOHN A. SECOGES, SECOGES PHOTOGRAPHICS

Looks can be deceiving — but in this case, in a very good way. A beautiful, sprawling brick home fronted by a circular driveway decorated tastefully and elegantly for the holiday season — it’s so perfect that it might be featured in a national periodical. The rooflines are defined in white lights. Lovely illuminated and beribboned trees stand on either side of the front door. Human-sized nutcrackers boasting bugles stand tall against two of the columns. 54

DECEMBER 2023 | berkscountyliving.com

It looks so perfect, you might think it’s there just for show. Big surprise — and a great one at that: this is the McFadden family home in the Birdland section of Wyomissing, and it’s as filled with life and activity as it is with the beauty of its architecture and its lovely decorations. At the heart of this dynamic family are Susan and Mark McFadden, the parents of Mark II, Maggie and Molly (a little alliteration, a lot of energy).

A Doggone Nice Place

Adding to the family count are canine siblings Barkley, a 4-year-old St. Bernedoodle; Ruby, a Goldendoodle; and Teddy, Susan’s mom’s Cavapoochon who has recently taken up semipermanent residence. The immediate affection these three doggies provide a visitor is just an indicator of the joy that exudes from the extended family, colleagues and friends of the McFaddens. Let’s set the stage to know them a bit better. Susan is a well-known and seasoned real estate agent with Keller Williams Platinum Realty. Mark is a professor at Immaculata University in Chester County. Mark II is a junior at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove where he plays Division 3 football.

Maggie is in her freshman year at Providence College in Rhode Island. And Molly is a junior at Berks Catholic. Whew! With their careers and following their children’s educations and attendant interests, it’s safe to say there’s not a lot of down time for the McFaddens. And folks need a bit of that when it comes to holiday decorating, particularly on the scale this family enjoys. In recent years Susan has reached out to Luxury Garden Studios, based near the Centre Park Historic District. “They’ve been great, helping us get started and getting some additional trees,” she says. Indeed, with the circa 1969 home’s high ceilings and open floor plan— design elements that sealed the deal for them five years ago when they bought it — there’s plenty of room for trees of all themes and sizes. And the results are spectacular.

The holiday transformation always begins and ends annually within the same time frame. “We wait to begin until after Thanksgiving,” says Susan. “Let the holidays unfold as they should.” And, as believers in the time-honored 12 days of Christmas, the decorations come down January 6. “I am very into tradition,” says Susan, “just like my parents.” While the themed trees become ever more intriguing, the family’s traditionally decorated tree is always the most venerated, says Susan. That tree is located in the family room and is filled with long-treasured family ornaments, including some from all the family members’ childhoods — homemade babies’ first Christmases featuring childhood photos from both generations. The tree garners its fair share of attention and admiration each year, bringing delight with each ornament’s special, personal history. A favorite among them is one created when Molly was in preschool. Somehow, during the painting of the ornament, she fidgeted, resulting in one hand sporting six fingers. “We didn’t notice that until years later, and every year we get a few laughs,” Susan says. “This is our main tree with all the traditional family ornaments,” she says. “We’ve never wanted it to look like a department store tree, and it never will.” Nor do any of the others.

A Little Bit of D.C.

The foyer tree focuses on history, White House history to be exact. Every year since 1998, Susan’s dad has presented her and her siblings with the annual White House official Christmas ornament issued by the White House Historical Association. “There’s no matter who is president,” she says. “These ornaments are beautiful and really tell their own stories.” The family gets a kick out of complementing the ribbon colors on the various trees to the rooms in which they are placed. The tree ribbons on the living room tree are champagne and blush while in the family room traditional red and green prevail. The office tree has a Candyland theme, and a Twister board doubles as the tree skirt. While the girls have long had trees in their rooms, Susan says that was not a priority for her son. But there are more than trees to decorate. The home has five working fireplaces, each of which is garnished. The tall, elaborate living

room fireplace takes formality to a new level, and six small, simple trees on the mantel pay quiet tribute to the family. In the family room, a simpler brick one is more casually bedecked. This is the fireplace featuring the family’s stockings, a Santa nameplate and one of the omnipresent nutcrackers. The main staircase is brightened with an elaborate garland of ornaments, ribbons and artificial greens. Nearby, a small entry table is topped by a simple reindeer and sled alongside a small “Be Merry” sign. The reindeer/sled theme carries into the dining room where a larger version is centered on the long table. No runners, no additional table covering. It’s just this contained item that allows the elaborate chandelier and treasure-filled, illuminated built-in china cabinet to remain the focal points. “I’d say there’s one word that guides me, and that’s symmetry,” Susan says.

Along with the decor come some very important holiday traditions. For this family of serious faith, every Christmas morning begins with everyone — family and visitors — singing “Happy Birthday” to Baby Jesus at the nativity scene, which has evolved from a Fisher-Price set to a more contemporary, European-style nativity. “We’ve been doing this since the children were little,” says Susan. When Christmas Eve arrives, expect to see everyone in the house, canine siblings often included, wearing matching pajamas. That’s after everyone attends the all-important Midnight Mass. “We love to take pictures,” she says. “It relaxes us and makes us smile to see everyone in the same outfits. If we know relatives will be here, we order them the matching pajamas. It’s just another way that everyone feels included.” Eagles apparel, as one might expect, has been among the most popular. Susan laughs that they try to get the dogs in the spirit with their Eagles clothes at game times, but that can be a challenge. Christmas Day means lots of gifts, food and fun. “Generally, we do dinner for 20; we switch off with my sister,” she says, explaining they’re continuing their parents’ traditions.

Care Packages

For years, it’s also been the heart of what Susan refers to as “care package parties.” Moms of the kids’ high school friends get together to prep special packages for football games, college dorm room special deliveries or local events. “We really enjoy doing these and getting together,” says Susan. “I was really touched when one mom said: ‘My daughter said she has all her favorite high school memories at your house.’” Indeed, the good vibes of the McFadden home might have some roots with the original owner, the late Paul Fulmer. A past president of Interstate Container Corp., he was also a philanthropist and served as president over many years for the United Way of Berks County, the Civic Center Capital Campaign, St. Joseph’s Hospital, the Hawk Mountain Boy Scout Council and First Presbyterian Church. The home served as a hub for society- and civic-style entertaining during his years as an eminent Berks figure, and the “care package” concept, though different then, resulted in a lot of good for the people and institutions of the county.

A Little Advice and Reflection

IS YOUR KITCHEN READY FOR HOSTING THE HOLIDAYS? WE CAN HELP.

Susan offers this advice for those couples just starting out amassing holiday decor. “When we were newly married, we’d buy decorations 50 percent off in the after season,” she says. “Go slowly and buy only what you really like. Involve the children from an early age to establish tradition. For instance, as a family, every year we go to Plow Farms in the Mohnton area and always get a tree we love and have a great time.” She also encourages incorporating little side jaunts to area attractions. Koziar’s Christmas Village near Bernville is at the top of the list. There’s also the annual Santa Brunch at the Berkshire Country Club. But there is one place closer to home — in the Borough of Wyomissing itself. Known as “Christmas on Lincoln,” this animated holiday light display at 2031 Lincoln Court boasts more than 60,000 lights, whose pulsations coordinate with music transmitted over one’s car radio. Started in 2008 by Tim and Katie Macrina, it has garnered national recognition. Susan says her family piles into the car, goes for hot chocolate and heads to the site, radio tuned in and ready. “We’ve been doing this together since the children were little,” she says. “It’s just a little yet important part of each holiday season.” Overall, preparing the house for the holidays — whether with professional help or doing key decorating themselves — Susan takes real pride in the overall homey, welcoming result. And that pride grows with each person spending time there. “I think the biggest thing with this crazy, literally insane life we have is to have a comfortable home to come back to,” she says. “It brings a sense of calm and enjoyment. It’s not about the size; it’s how you feel when you are in it. “It brings me a lot of happiness to see how beautiful it is. And for the kids, for their friends, to know they love being here and having fun, well, that’s really why we have it.”

DINING OUT

Yellow House Hotel CLASSIC ELEGANCE, CHARM BY MARIAN FRANCES WOLBERS | PHOTOS BY HEIDI REUTER

DECEMBER 2023 | berkscountyliving.com

It was built in 1801 and exudes old-fashioned charm and history. Long revered for fine dining, Yellow House Hotel not only features one of the most elegant settings you’ll find in a 200-mile radius but delivers every course, from steaming soup to homemade lemon sponge and pecan pies, as carefully and perfectly as though George Washington himself had time-traveled and reserved a table for his wife and friends. The restaurant, owned by Patricia (Patty) DeGrazia, sits at the crossroads of the sweeping fields and natural waterways of rural Oley Valley, but don’t let the rustic panorama fool you: Chef Dennis Karish balances delicacies like Tempura Asparagus and Country Liver Pate and entrees such as Seafood Alfredo, Duck Breast and Filet Mignon with panache, superior flavor and gorgeous presentation. What a treat! On top of that, DeGrazia makes sure that Yellow House Hotel sticks to three paramount, nonfood elements for a great night of dining: authentic warmth, gracious hospitality and attentive service. Loyal patrons include regular customers at the tavern/ bar side of the house with its hunt-themed interior, marvelous cocktails and small tables in addition to couples and other folks who dine in other colonialdécor rooms. Families and friends mark many a special occasion here as well — anniversaries, birthdays and holidays. In December, the Hotel is at its festive-holiday prettiest — so why not celebrate with a Sugarplum Martini? Made with Chambord vodka and white chocolate liqueur and topped with a side cherry, this beauty is sweet and smooth.

Rib Sampler YHH BBQ Ribs

Here’s a multicourse meal to savor in colder months: begin with Baked Brie, complete with toasted almonds on top and gently resting in a tangy raspberry pool. It’s a full circle of melted Brie, perfect for sharing with pals. Next, a cup or bowl of their Soup du Jour — on a recent day, YHH featured a vegetable soup made with saffron and scallops. Always on the menu: a signature Snapper Soup made with sherry, a longtime favorite. Or perhaps you’d prefer a crock of lusciously hearty French Onion Soup au gratin along with warm bread rolls and spice cake mini muffins.

Reese’s Cheesecake

On to the salad that accompanies an entrée. It’s no surprise that all but one of their dressings are made inhouse, including a delightfully refreshing, savory “house dressing” that’s sweet ’n sour with herbal vinaigrette, bold and well-balanced to complement the greens, multiple veggies and croutons. Then again, the bleu cheese dressing is out of this world! (It’s a tough choice.) Totally appealing to many Berks County fans are the YHH Barbecue Ribs, crazily aromatic even when they arrive at table with a stream of glazed gravy draped over thick, fall-off-thefork meaty pieces — the very definition of piquant. Superb! Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes partner with the ribs for a fulsome experience indeed — lightly tangy, soft, buttery, melty and just plain “Oh, wow!” Added to the platter are seasonal vegetables. On a recent evening, the kitchen served a superhealthy, cruciferous medley of al dente broccoli and cauliflower florets plus sugary carrot bites. Other meaty choices: Frenched Pork Chop, Prime Rib au jus (Friday and Saturday only), Chicken Parmesan and Filet Mignon with sauteed mushrooms over a Port wine reduction. A stellar, non-meaty, completely alluring entrée is roasted Vegetable Ravioli in a delicious vodka blush sauce.

Seafood Alfredo Shrimp Scampi over Angel-Hair Pasta

You can’t go wrong with any number of seafood and fish dishes here. Fans of classic Shrimp Scampi are invited to choose their pasta when ordering this dish, but angel hair does always seem so happy being twirled around in a light-garlic, herbed, lemon-butter sauce. Several pieces of gorgeous shrimp, expertly cooked, are positioned in a ring around the pasta’s edge for a super enticing presentation; a handy lemon slice perches at the ready for squeezing, too, and — finally — freshly shaved Parmesan joins the plate party, sitting in a little metal cup to sprinkle over everything for a cheesy zing. Other creations from the sea include one of Yellow House’s most popular dishes, Seafood Alfredo. It’s bountiful with shrimp, scallops and crab, plus saucy sundried tomatoes and spinach on pasta. Sea Scallops over risotto, Crab Cakes in Dijon cream sauce and a Chicken and Crab creation are all on the yearround menu.

If your stomach thrives on smaller portions of food, yet you crave all the full flavor of larger entrees and multiple courses, you’ll love Yellow House’s weekly specials and numerous salad + protein options. Consider this mini-list of Small Plates: The B.Y.O.B. (build your own burger!); Petite Filet (Bordelaise sauce); panko-crusted Wild Caught Salmon (with creamy Dijon sauce); Single Crab Cake and Grilled Reuben. These come with either a salad or choice of fries, onion rings or mashed potatoes. Four fabulous salads — all with protein options — are tempting as main courses. Tip: if you’ve never had grilled romaine, definitely order Grilled Caesar.
