Ralph Waldo Emerson's quote, "Life is a journey, not a destination," appropriately captures this sentiment, applicable to both personal and professional aspects of our lives.

Examining the distinctions between the journey and destination goes beyond mere semantics. The intentional use of the term "journey" holds the potential to shape and define the culture of a company. Recognizing a journey as a continuous process of learning and evolving, where every experience, whether positive or negative, contributes to growth and development. Moreover, embracing the journey concept creates opportunities for enhanced engagement and inclusiveness among employees and co-workers.

The inherent human inclination towards stability and sustainability aligns well with the journey perspective. » YOU HAVE A pneumatic forklift with a 2:1 mechanical disadvantage on the cylinder. It has 101.6 mm (4”) cylinder at .69 MPa (100 psi) that has been fully extended and the valve held for a couple of moments before centering with a closed center valve and with an empty crate on it. Men fill the crate with hardware that weight 2224 N (500 lbs.) that they will lower to the floor. What is the pressure on the cylinder before they start to lower the load?

Efficient and Sustainable Heavy-Duty Equipment

There is an ever-growing demand, in the Fluid Power Industry, for sealing products manufactured through sustainable practices, that can withstand the harshest operating conditions. Equally, there is a crucial emphasis on enhancing energy efficiency to minimize the frictional "drag" exerted by the seal on the dynamic sealing surface. To achieve less friction, the design of the seal must introduce less resistance without compromising the amount of permissible boundary lubrication that is allowed to pass underneath the sealing lip. Navigating the ever-changing needs of the market prompts seal manufacturers to explore unconventional materials and designs. These solutions must address the challenges posed by harsher operating conditions, improve performance and efficiency, and incorporate sustainable materials.

Let’s look at how we define each of these characteristics before considering some sealing innovations manufactured to address them.

Harsher operating conditions

Heavy-duty equipment operators are familiar with harsh conditions, which often include extreme temperatures, pressures, speeds, and media. However, as the fluid power market evolves to more sustainable systems the demand for sealing components increases. System designs are moving away from a centralized hydraulic pump/reservoir to hydraulic/pump systems that drive portions of the unit, significantly reducing the amount of fluid present in the system and resulting in higher temperatures. Weight reduction is also a consideration, meaning that fluid power components, such as hydraulic cylinders, must become smaller yet maintain the capability to perform at the same level in the application, resulting in higher operating pressures. Finally, all of this must be accomplished with more sustainable fluids, which can adversely affect common sealing materials. Though challenging, there are new innovative products designed to meet the industry’s impending needs.

Better performance and efficiency

Energy conservation is increasingly crucial due to the hybridization and electrification of off-road equipment. While sealing systems contribute a small proportion to overall energy consumption, reducing friction without compromising seal effectiveness is vital. This requires not only innovative design considerations but also the use of advanced materials to achieve optimal results.

Sustainable materials

Sealing applications utilize a range of materials, including thermoplastic polyurethanes, polyesters, acetals, nylons, and PTFE. As sustainability gains prominence, questions arise about the environmental impact of these materials and fillers. Seal manufacturers are compelled to explore alternative materials, challenging the status quo and demanding creative solutions to meet market demands.

Three seal innovations respond to market demand

714 TWO-PIECE DOUBLE ACTING PISTON SEAL

The 714 is a heavy-duty piston seal designed to withstand pressures up to 52 MPa (7500 PSI) and continuous operation temperatures up to 100° C (212°F). Its glassfilled nylon face prevents extrusion at high temperatures/ pressures, replaces a typical four-piece capped T seal, and can be recyclable, offering a sustainable solution.

2. UNITIZED PISTONS AND GLANDS

Extrusion of sealing material is a primary cause of seal failures. Unitized pistons and glands, featuring over-molded components are precision machined to minimize extrusion gaps and offer enhanced seal life, higher operating temperatures, and pressures. Unitized pistons and glands are over-molded with a bearing material, reducing the overall length required, resulting in less material and weight without the risk of metal-to-metal contact.

In grapple and shearer applications, heavy side load, heat generation, and pressure spikes are the norm. The unitized product allows an engineer to address these concerns by taking advantage of the significant side load protection (when compared to the non-unitized alternative) without having to redesign the original piston and gland envelope to allow for more bearing area. The designer can maintain the existing design envelope while upgrading the cylinder performance. Thus, the upgrade is retroactive for a product that exists in the field already and is a big improvement for new cylinders. In addition, the tight extrusion gaps provided by the unitized piston and gland help increase seal life by reducing the number of contaminants that reach the seals and prevent extrusion of the seal during high cyclic usage.

3. 777 TWO-PIECE COMPACT PISTON SEAL

Manufactured from state-of-the-art thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), the 777 seal offers enhanced wear resistance in a wide range of operating temperatures. In addition, optimized tooling ensures the parts are provided with both high-quality and cost-effective methods that contribute to the product’s performance and longevity, and this contributes to reducing waste.

Testing drives technology and material advancements forward

Comprehensive testing is critical for developing materials that align with sustainability objectives and validate seal performance. Hallite's test capabilities focus on assessing product performance, providing data confirming the benefits of design innovations.

The Crucial Role of Cleaning & Sealing Hydraulic Hoses & Tubes

It is well-established that approximately 80% of hydraulic system failures can be attributed to contamination. Some of this contamination infiltrates the system through hydraulic hose and tube assemblies. This article underscores the significance of cleaning and sealing these assemblies, emphasizing how this practice can mitigate system downtime, reduce costly repairs, and address potential safety concerns. Hydraulic systems, which play a pivotal role in various industries such as construction, aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, and agriculture, rely on meticulous maintenance to ensure their longevity and reliability.

The Anatomy of Hydraulic Systems

Regardless of the specific application, hydraulic systems share fundamental components that enable them to provide power and control while operating safely and dependably. These components include hydraulic fluid, pumps, valves, and cylinders. The hydraulic fluid is pressurized by the pump and directed through the system, with valves regulating its flow and relieving pressure when necessary. The fluid's energy is then converted into mechanical energy within the cylinders. This seamless operation depends heavily on the cleanliness and integrity of hydraulic hoses and tubes.

The Consequences of Neglecting Cleaning

Failure to clean and maintain hydraulic hoses and tubes can lead to the accumulation of contaminants, resulting in wear and tear that can ultimately culminate in catastrophic system failure. Even

before such a failure occurs, the loss of production or performance is well-documented due to contaminated hydraulic fluid. This loss of efficiency can go unnoticed until it reaches significant levels, equivalent to losing a day of productivity each week.

The Evolving Challenge of Contamination

In the past, hydraulic systems operated at lower pressures and featured less stringent tolerances between metal-to-metal surfaces. Consequently, the focus was primarily on visible contamination. Today, however, we must also contend with invisible contaminants, including particles as minuscule as 2 to 5 microns. To put this into perspective, a 5-micron particle is 1/64 the size of a speck of dust on a TV screen. Given the tight clearances in modern systems, even such small particles can initiate premature wear and efficiency loss. The continuous presence of these particulates exacerbates wear and tear.

The Origins of Contamination

Contamination in hydraulic systems can originate from various sources, especially during the hose and tube assembly fabrication process. Each step, including cutting, crimping, deburring, and stem insertion, introduces additional contamination. For instance, when hoses are cut using scalloped blade saws or abrasive wheels, the heat generated causes rubber and metal particles to adhere to the hose's inner diameter. Lubricants used during stem insertion can introduce additional contaminants. The crimping or swaging process generates metal plating flash, further compromising the cleanliness of the assembly. Failing to clean hoses before installation can have detrimental effects on any hydraulic system.

Benefits of Cleaning During Fabrication

Cleaning hydraulic hoses and tube assemblies during the fabrication process offers several advantages. It prevents additional contamination buildup within the system, safeguarding its performance and reducing the risk of catastrophic failure. Furthermore, it represents a vital form of preventive maintenance, allowing for the early identification and resolution of potential issues. Proper cleaning also leads to reduced maintenance and repair costs, lower energy consumption, and fewer warranty claims.

Ultra Clean offers cleaning systems that remove contamination from hose, tube or pipe sizing from 1/8” to 4 1/2”. All systems use foam projectiles that are fired through hydraulic hose.

For both the Economy launcher and 2” launcher, Kit options are available, these kits provide all that is needed to start removing contamination immediately upon receiving the kit. For cleaning larger than 2” the option of the 3 ½” and 4 ½” launchers are available, both made from precision machined aluminum and are fully anodized for harsh environments and heavy use.

The Carousel Autoloader is ideal for high volume production cells making hose assemblies. This is an automatic projectile loading, firing, and verification system that is capable of cleaning ¼” – 1”. The Autoloader verifies projectiles have exited the hose and entered the Containment Barrel along with expelled contamination. The Containment Barrel is an upgraded wireless system that sends verification back to the Control Station in milliseconds and can be up to 100’ away from the Autoloader. All Carousel Autoloaders are Marking System capable; mark ensures proper stem depth insertion as well as indicated that hose is cleaned, and projectile is verified.

Lastly you can guarantee a projectile is never left inside a hose that has been cleaned with the Projectile Verification System. This system is equipped with a PLC touchscreen for intuitive navigation and set-up in multiple languages. There are three cleaning modes with time-adjustable air blows. Also, the PVS is capable of capturing data such as projectile counts and faults, via a USB port to ensure no projectile is left inside a cleaned hose. The PVS works in conjunction with the Containment Barrel.

The Clean Seal Systems utilize heat shrink technology to encapsulate the end of a hose assembly with a Clean Seal Capsule, eliminating recontamination that is problematic with traditional capping and plugging methods. Re-contamination occurs when ill-fitting caps and plugs are forced onto assemblies, causing plastic particles to shear off into the hose. The Clean Seal Systems leave assemblies tightly sealed and 100% contamination free, and provide an easier, less costly, and more effective solution than traditional capping methods. Capsules eliminate excessive inventory, preserve cleanliness and offer universal fit for all assemblies.

Hydraulic hose failures can result in injuries and fatalities, particularly in industries where high-pressure hydraulic systems are prevalent. The demolition industry has undergone significant transformations, from manual wrecking ball methods to advanced hydraulic-powered techniques. Implosion is a highly specialized method that employs explosives to bring down tall structures by undermining their structural supports, causing the building to collapse within its footprint or along a predetermined

path. Implosion is used in less than 1% of demolition projects due to its complexity and safety concerns.

Types of Demolition

There are many different types of demolition, such as commercial, industrial, interior, deconstruction, high-reach demolition, and demolition of highways and bridges. Deconstruction is a specialized type of demolition that is more labor-intensive and focused on preserving recyclable materials. High-reach demolition and demolition of bridges and highways require excavators with long booms and various attachments to demolish tall structures safely and precisely.

High-Reach Demolition

High-reach demolition is a specialized method for dismantling tall and structurally complex buildings, often 20 stories or more. These structures may consist of steel, masonry, and concrete, making traditional demolition methods impractical. High-reach demolition relies on high-reach excavators with long booms and specialized attachments to dismantle buildings from the top down. This approach ensures safety and precision, particularly when adjacent structures must remain intact.

High-reach booms with specialized hydraulic attachments mounted on excavator platforms are designed to reach tall structures. Highreach booms allow for careful and controlled demolition, which is crucial in urban areas. This increases safe demolition processes.

High-reach booms with attachments contribute to the need for recycling and processing debris with efficiency and less labor than required years ago. Using multiple attachments on one mobile equipment base and quick-changing hydraulic attachments greatly increases efficiency and productivity.

With the right attachments and proper maintenance of auxiliary hydraulics, demolition contractors can achieve many benefits, including:

Choosing the Right Attachments in High-Reach Demolition

Demolition crews must have the appropriate attachment selection to perform various tasks common to many demolition sites. The application should be the first factor to guide an attachment choice. The choice depends on the type of material and how it must be broken up. An example would be primary to secondary demolition and rebar-enforced concrete compared to wood or brick structures.

When demolishing a structure, primary picks include multi-processors, shears, hydraulic breakers, demolition grapples, pulverizers, and crushers. Crusher and pulverizer attachments are the best tackle jobs made up of mostly concrete. For concrete structures, contractors will use multi-processors,

hammers, and secondary pulverizers for primary and secondary demolition.

If concrete isn’t part of the demolition but steel is, a demolition processor with shear jaws or a mobile shear attachment is best practice. For heavy steel structure demolition, contractors often use demolition shears or a multi-processor with shear jaws to utilize scrap.

A hydraulic breaker is often a good choice for tackling rock or large-scale demolition projects. Many contractors use a demolition grapple when working with light materials such as wood and brick, commonly found in residential demolition.

Besides breaking apart materials, rotating grapples work well for sorting during secondary demolition and increase versatility and productivity by allowing a wide range of movement. Ultimately, the use of attachments serves the contractor in efficiency and productivity.

Hydraulic Hammers, Shears, and Processors

Hammers (Hydraulic Breakers): Hydraulic breakers, commonly known as hammers, are crucial and perhaps the most commonly used attachments on a demolition site. They quickly deliver high-breaking force to demolish

concrete, pavement, and rock. These breakers are also used for trenching tasks. Hydraulic breakers are indispensable tools in high-reach demolition and other demolition processes. They offer several advantages:

• High breaking force: Hydraulic breakers can power through materials quickly, making them essential for breaking concrete, pavement, and rock.

• Minimal maintenance: These breakers require minimal routine maintenance, ensuring cost-effectiveness and minimal downtime on the job.

• Adaptability: Hydraulic breakers can be used on various demolition equipment, from large excavators to mini-excavators and compact loaders.

• Improved technology: Innovations have led to hydraulic breakers providing 2 to 3 times more blows per minute (BPM), enhancing efficiency.

Shears: Shears are used to cut through materials like steel and concrete. They can rotate 360 degrees for horizontal, vertical, and angled cuts, making them versatile tools for highreach demolition projects.

Processors: Processors are designed to break down materials into smaller pieces, such as

gravel. They are vital in reducing debris size for easier disposal or recycling.

The Fluid Power Hall of Fame was established to acknowledge those individuals who have dedicated their careers and have made significant contributions to fluid power technology.

Any person can nominate an individual, living, or deceased, who demonstrated excellence within their 25+ year fluid power career - one nomination per category (living or deceased) per person.

A panel of judges will review applications and select inductees. The inductees will be announced on June 19, 2024 – Fluid Power Professionals Day.

Inductees will be honored during the IFPS awards dinner being held in Kansas City, MO.

My favorite part of my position is contributing with a wonderful team to create the best in class training materials, and being able to share that with individuals wanting to learn more about hydraulics and pneumatics. The most rewarding part is seeing individuals learn something and being able to apply it to their job while being safer with their job. It is the “light bulb turning on” moment and the “ah ha” moments that make you realize the purpose in your job. It is quite rewarding!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE?

I am not sure I have one favorite so I am torn between two movies. The first is “It’s a Wonderful Life”. The movie has a great story and shows the important things in life - family and friends. The second movie is “The Man From Snowy River”. Beautiful scenery and a good story of determination and never giving up.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HOBBY OUTSIDE OF WORK?

My favorite hobby is camping and hiking. I enjoy visiting National and State Parks with my wife and kids.

WHICH COUNTRY HAVE YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO VISIT?

Ireland is on my wife and I’s bucket list to visit. Julie has always wanted to visit and it would be a blessing to me to be able to take her there to visit.

WHAT IS THE MOST ADVENTUROUS THING YOU HAVE EVER DONE?

Regarding hydraulics, I have worked on and operated large construction and agricultural equipment including a combine harvester with a 40 ft header and a lattice boom crawler crane with over 200 ft of boom.

From a hobby perspective, I have hiked to the top of Mt. Katahadin in Maine on the Appalachian Trail and I have hiked to Stag Mesa in Colorado at over 12,200 ft in elevation.

WHICH BOOK OR MOVIE CHARACTER DO YOU RELATE TO THE MOST?

King David - even with all of his sins, he was a man after God’s own heart. We all sin but need to stay focused on our task. If there is hope for King David, there is hope for each of us.

IF YOU COULD HAVE ANY SUPERPOWER, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Unconditional love. Our Lord and Savior has given us that but we all fall short of perfection. With him as my savior, I have been given the grace to try and achieve that power.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DISH?

One of my favorite meals is crawfish etouffee and Cajun Ribeye

WHAT IS YOUR HIDDEN TALENT?

I enjoy construction and remodeling from work on our house to the design and build of our Skoolie (school bus conversion to a camper). Many of my friends and family have said they do not know how I know how to do those things on my own. I enjoy the challenge.

WHICH HISTORICAL FIGURE WOULD YOU WANT TO HAVE DINNER WITH, IF GIVEN THE CHANCE? WHY?

Davy Crockett - as a kid I loved watching the movies with Fess Parker and I would enjoy learning more first hand able his life and experiences.

Although electric motors are very commonly found in many varied applications, and hydraulic motors are well known for their high power density, air motors fill a unique niche in power and motion control applications. Air motors are relatively small and lightweight sources of smooth, vibration-less power. Air motors can be stopped and started almost instantly. They can provide variable torque and speed without complicated controls. They can operate in hot, corrosive, and wet environments without damage, and are unaffected by continuous stalling or overload. Therefore, there’s no heat buildup or electric sparks to damage the motor. Compared with hydraulic motors, air motors have a lower torque and power-to-weight ratio (power density). However, compressed air offers special advantages that make air motors quite desirable: it’s readily available, it’s relatively clean, and it can be directed to air motors with simple low-pressure piping. There are hundreds of uses for air motors.

The most common types of air motors are axial piston, radial piston, rotary vane, and gear/gerotor. As may be expected, each type has its distinct advantages and disadvantages. The application requirements determine which type of motor should be selected but they all share the same common sizing and selection criteria.

A unique characteristic of air motors is that their power output increases with increasing speed until it peaks at around 50% of free speed (maximum speed under no-load conditions).

At the peak point, torque capability begins to decrease as the speed increases. Power decreases to zero when torque is zero because all the inlet air power is used to force the volume of air required to maintain this speed through the motor.

Torque output for an air motor of given displacement is theoretically a function of the differential pressure across the motor. Therefore, regardless of speed, torque should be constant for a given operating pressure. However, as air flow increases through the motor to increase the speed, pressure losses in the inlet and outlet lines consume a greater portion of the supply and therefore the torque output decreases. In practice, torque reaches its greatest value shortly beyond zero speed and falls off rapidly until it reaches zero at free speed.

at its greatest efficiency. Air motors are usually sized by their horsepower at rated input air supply, usually in the range between 80 and 90 psig. Then this air consumption is used to size the valving and the compressor. The horsepower and speed of a given motor can be changed by throttling the inlet, so the common practice is to size the motor to provide the torque needed at 2/3 of line pressure. This point is approximately the peak power point of the motor performance curve.

Full line pressure can then be used for start-up and overloads. Each manufacturer supplies curves with the power output range given for several pressures. If for example, a 1 hp motor were required with a speed of 1,500 rpm, the motor would be selected that provided this power at 2/3 of the line pressure available. Fig. 3-19 (on the next page) shows two common graphs used to rate air motors. The left graph shows air consumption of a given displacement motor at different supply pressures and the graph on the right shows torque capability versus speed for that motor again at the supply pressures shown. Note that the pressures referenced are what the pressure should be at the motor inlet and not compressor output pressure.

The graphs in Fig. 3-19 are helpful to make calculations for motor torque and air consumption. If the rotation speed and the power required are known, then using Eq. 2.5 torque can be determined. Once that is known then the graph can be used to determine what supply pressure is required, along with what the required air consumption would be at that point. •

Tank Optimization

An Underutilized Way to Improve Hydraulic Equipment Efficiency

In recent years, trends towards electrification, rising oil and fuel costs, and general concerns about sustainability have left engineers constantly striving for improved efficiency in hydraulic equipment designs. One aspect of hydraulic machinery ripe for optimization is the hydraulic tank.

Many machines operate with an excess of fluid in oversized or inefficiently designed reservoirs, adding dead weight to the machine, reducing efficiency, and increasing fluid recycling and replacement costs.

A myriad of benefits can be achieved through optimizing a machine’s hydraulic tank, including increased energy efficiency, weight savings, steel and oil savings per machine, CO2 emission

reduction, roll off carbon footprint reduction, additional space for other features, and more.

What is Tank Optimization?

Tank Optimization is chiefly concerned with reducing the size and volume of the hydraulic reservoir. The two primary factors which determine the level of optimization possible are volume utilization and fluid velocity within the tank.

VOLUME UTILIZATION

In an efficiently designed hydraulic tank, every cubic inch of the fluid volume should turn over within the reservoir. Digital simulations can be performed to determine if the

reservoir is being utilized to its fullest. If there are “dead zones” in the tank where the fluid doesn’t circulate, then the fluid might as well not be there in the first place. Dead zones indicate

the potential to downsize the tank and reduce the overall fluid volume of the hydraulic system.

FLUID VELOCITY

In addition to volume utilization, the fluid velocity—or the speed at which fluid moves into and through the reservoir—is another important factor in tank optimization. The fluid velocity dictates how adequately the tank can de-aerate and whether there will be splashing within the reservoir at the fluid surface.

Deaeration is of particular importance for hydraulic equipment, as air entering the hydraulic lines can cause a variety of problems, including:

• Gaseous cavitation. As air bubbles coalesce, grow, and collapse inside a hydraulic system, it causes loud noises and can potentially damage the internal hydraulic components.

• Spongy hydraulics. Unlike hydraulic fluid, air is compressible. As a result, too much air contamination can cause a delayed response, or ‘spongy’ feeling in a hydraulic system instead

of an instant reaction. The result is inefficient, unpredictable, potentially dangerous system performance.

• Oxidation of hydraulic fluid. When oxygen reacts with hydraulic fluid, it produces varnish, a sludgy byproduct. This varnish increases fluid viscosity and can build up around valves, causing sluggish performance, damage to system components, blocked return lines and more.

To ensure optimal deaeration, the fluid velocity must be lowered as much as possible. This allows air bubbles to coalesce and dissipate at the surface of the oil and reduces splashing which can introduce more air into the hydraulic fluid.

Fluid velocity can be affected by altering the structure of the hydraulic tank itself, such as adding baffling geometry to disrupt and slow the fluid and reduce splashing. However, choosing the right in-tank return filter is also critical. Next generation in-tank filters which encourage reduced fluid velocity and air bubble coalescence for maximum deaeration have potentially the greatest impact on tank downsizing, even more so than the tank structure itself.

LIMITATIONS OF TANK OPTIMIZATION

Not every system is necessarily eligible for substantial reservoir downsizing through tank optimization. The chief limiting factor for tank optimization is the cylinder draw down volume of a given piece of machinery (i.e. the volume of fluid required to extend the hydraulic cylinders). The more cylinders there are, and the higher the draw down volume of the machine, the more fluid is required in the reservoir.

Still, tank performance can be enhanced by improving filtration and updating the geometry and baffling of the tank to increase efficiency and reduce dead zones, so revisiting the design of any given tank for potential improvement is still worthwhile.

The Benefits of Tank Optimization

With the fundamentals of tank optimization established, what benefits are there to OEMs and equipment users? Reducing the volume of a hydraulic tank comes with a variety of perks, chiefly: Improved energy efficiency, cost savings, increased machine space, and sustainability benefits.

Tank optimization allows for weight reduction by reducing the size of the tank and

volume of hydraulic fluid within the system. Reducing the weight of a machine directly affects its energy efficiency, as a lighter machine requires less energy to move, and thus consumes less fuel. Additionally, with less hydraulic fluid circulating in the system, machine warmup time is reduced, allowing more energy to go towards actual operations.

This not only benefits diesel or other fuel-powered machinery but is critical for the viability of electric-powered machines. Since electric drive equipment relies on much more limited onboard battery power, any improvements to energy efficiency increase the operational time of the machine.

COST SAVINGS

A properly optimized tank saves money in several ways. First, hydraulic fluid must be replaced regularly. Recycling costs and new fluid purchases, account for a large portion of

the equipment is powered by liquid fuel or electricity, ultimately, the cost of fuel is reduced.

Finally, with a smaller reservoir requiring less material to manufacture, some savings are immediately realized when the machine is first built.

INCREASED MACHINE SPACE

When a machine is being newly designed or updated, taking time to optimize the tank can free up onboard space for OEM engineers to further innovate and improve the equipment’s functionality and efficiency. This free space can accommodate larger batteries or fuel tanks, or potentially lead to a reduction in the overall size of the machine.

SUSTAINABILITY BENEFITS

Sustainability is a growing concern across virtually every industry, and all the above benefits of tank optimization can have an additional

harmful emissions are produced. Any improvements to energy efficiency thus have a direct impact on emissions. Additionally, the carbon footprint of a machine’s initial construction is reduced when less materials are required to make the smaller hydraulic reservoir.

Furthermore, reducing the volume of hydraulic fluid needed to power a machine means less fluid must be replaced over time. This results in less hydraulic fluid being added to the waste stream, as well as reducing overall fluid demand and therefore mitigating the environmental impact associated with producing the hydraulic fluid in the first place.

Optimizing hydraulic tanks to the fullest extent can also open new possibilities for equipment electrification. Electric power is rapidly gaining ground as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, but electrification is hampered by the limitations of onboard batteries compared to liquid or gaseous

imparted by the reduction in reservoir size can allow for larger onboard batteries which further increase the operating time of the machine on a single charge.

Case Study: Tank Optimization in Practice

The benefits of tank optimization go beyond just theory. In one Schroeder Industries case study, a forestry OEM saw substantial savings when optimizing the hydraulic tanks on a series of stump grinders.

Through simulations of the OEM’s existing 75.7 liter (20 gallon) tanks and a TNK12 (45.4 liter/12 gallon tank) optimized for greater efficiency, it was discovered that the TNK12 would provide equivalent deaeration to the existing tanks with a 40% reduction in volume.

With 500 stump grinders being produced annually, saving 30.3 liters (8 gallons) of hydraulic oil per unit meant 15,141.7 liters (4,000 gallons) of oil saved overall. This translated into $28,000 in cost savings per year on oil alone. The oil savings were also imparted onto end users of the stump grinders via decreased cost of ownership associated with lower oil usage due to the optimized tank. Additional opportunities to improve the equipment design resulted from the reduced tank volume.

Downsizing the reservoir and reducing the amount of oil required also lessened the OEM’s annual carbon footprint. By reducing the oil usage of each stump grinder, the OEM’s annual carbon footprint reduction came to approximately 41,730.5 kg (92,000 lbs) of CO2 saved. In turn, the machine end user’s oil consumption will be reduced, further compounding the carbon reduction over the equipment’s lifetime.
