board President Looks to 'the next 50 years'
By Denis M. Poirier Jr., CFPHS, CFPAI, AJPP, AJPPCC, CFPIM, CFPCC, 2022 IFPS Board President and Chairperson»YOU MAY NOT realize this, but the International Fluid Power Society was founded in Detroit in 1960 by 30 industry professionals whose goal was to support the future of fluid power and its ever-changing technologies. Sixty-two years later, the goal hasn’t changed. The mission of IFPS today is to “globally pursue and promote the application of fluid power technology through certification, standardization, and education essential to professional growth," as it says on the IFPS website.
As 2022 comes to a close and my time as an active board member ends, two things become clear to me. First, the transition for a president occurs faster than you might think; and second is that nothing gets done without the work of others.
IFPS has matured as an organization. Everything about it is geared toward fluid power professionals. Whether it’s certifications for hydraulic and pneumatic specialists, educational resources like the Fluid Power Reference Handbook and Animated Circuits, or professional products like the Fluid Power Safety Posters, we are better today than ever.
The IFPS staff has evolved to support changes in the fluid power industry. A notable development is the establishment of a chief executive officer position. Donna Pollander, ACA, is IFPS’s first CEO. She brings over 20 years of industry-related experience and is a familiar face within the industry. As a seasoned, farsighted professional, she will continue to move IFPS forward.
Public recognition
One of the best ways we publicly recognize fluid power professionals past and present is by induction into the Fluid Power Hall of Fame. The HOF committee meets annually, reviews submissions, selects inductees, and presents awards to the most impactful professionals in the industry. Speaking as a member of IFPS, it is rewarding to be involved with an organization that recognizes the work of others past and present.
Anyone who has contributed to a committee, taught a webinar, facilitated a workshop, conducted a certification review, proctored a job performance assessment, attended a meeting, or served on the board of directors believes in something greater than themselves. They give their time and treasure to an organization that improves the professional well-being of others in the fluid power community. What could be better than selfless service? I can’t think of anything. So for that, I want to personally thank each person, past and present, for their effort and commitment to IFPS.
When we began the year, I spent some time looking into the lives of the original 30 fluid power professionals who founded IFPS. Did they ever imagine it would last 62 years? What would they think about the industry and the integration of its various technologies?
Where do we go from here? I am not sure there is one answer. But I can tell you this: as a board of directors, we have put in place proactive measures to ensure that IFPS is sustainable for the next 50 years.

New Problem Should You repair All Pneumatic System Leaks?
By Erine Parker, CFPAI, CFPSD, CFPS, CFPMM, CFPMT, CFPMIP, CFPMMH, CFPMIH, CFPE»I HAVE NOTICED that my air compressor kicks on at least once a day when I am working in the garage but not using any air. I assume that it would also kick in at least once every evening, or two times per day. I can’t find any external air leaks, but I have a moveable wall with lots of fittings on it. It retracts behind my iron worker and milling machine. When I need a fitting, I operate a three-position, four-ported (way), closed-center directional control valve. When I shift the valve to move the wall out and I don’t pressurize it first to the retracted position, it will “fly” out the first time, meaning that the rod-end air has exhausted during rest. It uses a metered-out circuit. The cylinder also extends when it hasn’t been used for a couple of days. I used soapy water to check for rod seal and fitting leakage, but I didn’t see any. This leads me to think that the DC valve is leaking. I have an air tank that has a 20-inch diameter and is 60 inches long. Assume the two ends are perfect hemispheres. My pressure differential on the air compressor is from 100 to 80 psi.
Here's the problem: At $.45/1,000 standard cubic feet, how many years would it take to make up the replacement cost of a new poppet-type valve at a cost of $50 without labor to replace it?
Solution to the June 2022 problem: Find the Cylinder Rod
What is the maximum efficiency for extension and retraction?
To extend the cylinder, it takes 50 psi (3.45 bar). Compression ratio (CR) at 100 psi = (100 + 14.7) / 14.7 = 7.8 CR at 50 psi = (50 +14.7)/14.7 = 4.4
Solving: Area of cylinder x stroke x cycles/minute (cpm) x CR / 1,728 = scfm (1,728 = cubic inches in a cubic foot)
Volume of cylinder given to extend at 100 psi is 1² x .7854 x 6 x 6 cpm x 7.8 / 1,728 = .128 scfm
Volume of cylinder needed to extend at 50 psi is 1² x .7854 x 6 x 6 cpm x 4.4 /1,728 = .072 scfm
Loss energy in cylinder because only 50 psi is needed = .1276 - .072 = .055 scfm
Loss in 1 hose = .25² x .7854 x 120” x 6 cpm x 7.8 CR / 1,728 x = .160 scfm
Total loss energy to extend (cylinder + hose) = .055 + .160 = .215 scfm
Total energy used = .128 + .160 = .288 scfm Efficiency = .072 / .215 = 33% for extension
To retract the cylinder, it theoretically takes no pressure. CR = 7.8
Solving: Rod-end area of cylinder x stroke x cpm x CR / 1,728 = scfm
Volume of cylinder to retract = (1² x .7854)–(.625² x .7854) x 6”x 6 cpm x 7.8 CR/1,728 = .078 scfm
Loss in 1 hose = .25² x .7854 x 120” x 6 cpm x 7.8 CR / 1,728 x = .160 scfm
Total energy loss = .078 + .16 = .238 scfm
Total energy used = .078 + .16 = .238 scfm
Efficiency 0 / .238 = 0% for retraction
Note: It isn’t reality to use no pressure to move an empty cylinder.
Total loss scfm = .215 + .238 = .453 scfm wasted
Cost = .453 x 60 minutes x 24 hours x 365 days x $.50 / 1000 = $119.05 Cost for wasted air
Total loss in air hoses = .16 x 2 hoses x 60 x 24 x 365 x .50 / 1,000 = $84
Almost $84 per year could be saved by just moving the valve close to the cylinder, and you wouldn’t have the air loss in the hoses since the air never enters the cylinder. Additional savings could also be made by using an air regulator on the rod end of the cylinder to reduce the air pressure that isn’t needed.

Closed Loop Control for Servo Valves
By Jason Palmer, PMP, CFPHS, Delta Computer SystemsAdvanced Foundry Specialists traces its roots back nearly 30 years, and it shares the same mission as its sister organization, Advanced Tooling Specialists: to provide “the most competitive, high-quality, and innovative finishing room automation solutions available.” AFS services the foundry industry, and its trim presses process castings across a host of applications, many of which can prove vitally important.
AFS vice president and general manager Brian Luebke said in an interview that some of the top automotive manufacturers in the world use customized AFS hydraulic trim presses. These presses help finish parts as they emerge from molding. There is no room for error in the trim process, as customer quality controls are understandably stringent. Faulty parts –cracked brake calipers, for example – could cost lives. The company made a significant leap forward in its hydraulic trim press accuracy and speed when it adopted Delta Computer Systems' motion controller solutions.
Trim press challenges
In vertical molding, the upper and lower molds close and join together. Where they meet, a line of unwanted material called flash is left, and it needs to be precisely removed. This removal can be done either with grinding equipment, which is relatively slow and laborious, or a trim
press, which is faster and more consistent. In high-volume settings, the latter is obviously preferable. However, high-volume output demands running the presses at the fastest feasible speeds, and this carries some risk. If operators don’t control the trim press motion accurately, a crash scenario could result, potentially damaging the tooling equipment.
Years ago, AFS controlled the motion of its trim presses with a programmable logic controller. However, because of the inherent limitations of PLC programmability, operators couldn’t accurately stop the presses while running at desired operating speeds. Effectively, they had to choose between production speed and press accuracy. AFS had to deal with these limitations for years in its own product lines; it’s what drove the company to look for better technologies for its high-volume trim presses.
In those earlier times, AFS experimented with digital motion controller brands and varying approaches, such as retrofitting advanced sensors onto older PLC-based presses. These were laser-based systems for detecting load-placement anomalies, but they were inordinately expensive for the task. Finally, AFS learned about Delta motion controllers. As soon as AFS understood the difference Delta RMCs could make to response times in their hydraulic press application, it became an immediate differentiator for the company’s product line.
Benefits of better motion control
Migrating to Delta hydraulic motion controllers yielded another key advantage: mitigating the dangers of misloads. Imagine loading a part that was almost a perfect cylinder for trimming. To an inexperienced eye, or perhaps an operator experiencing fatigue or distraction, it would be easy to load a part in the wrong orientation; e.g., with a slightly flatted feature positioned at 90° in the trim press rather than the required 270°. Misloading is likely to damage the part and may even lead to damage of the tooling or press.
AFS equips the system with the Delta motion controller and high-resolution linear position transducers to know at every millisecond where the tooling is and where it is going. If contact isn’t made at exactly the right time, the system detects the problem and initiates a stop before any damage occurs. To meet the production requirements, AFS runs its trim presses at a rapid speed during the approach and a slower trimming speed as the work is being done. At this transition point, Delta’s RMCTools software platform switches to tuning parameters on-the-fly, accounting for the varying speed and load conditions.
“The trick is to go as fast as possible for as long as possible,” Luebke said in the interview, “then shift to that lower speed as quickly as possible, all while maintaining precise location control. And during that
transition, that’s where we’re making part detection happen. A lot of things are happening at the same time, and at these speeds, the Delta RMC gives us a lot more ability to control and optimize the process.”
Depending on the job specifics, Luebke estimated that adopting Delta motion controllers has improved press cycle times by 10% to 20%.
However, Luebke emphasized that while press performance optimizations are impressive, the product quality improvements enabled by Delta RMC precision are critical. Any process fault could lead to repeated imperfections in a sequence of parts, and that, in turn, could lead to costly recalls. This sort of preemptive quality control provided by Delta’s motion control makes considerable differences to AFS’s customer base, and it means significantly lower return rates on the final parts.
“The biggest benefit to us in having this layer of protection,” Luebke said, “is that automakers, foundries – our customers – had steered away from trimming, even though it provided more consistent finished parts. They steered away because of the risk involved in those misloads and what a misload would mean to the RMA rate. But with Delta’s technology, it turned trimming from being a nonstarter into a viable option.”
According to Luebke, Delta’s software and software support made all the difference in its RMC implementation and design success. He notes that the AFS team is not made up of programmers and software engineers. Implementation of Delta’s RMCTools was a matter of pull-down menus and graphics-driven displays, bringing complex hydraulic motion programming within the team’s scope.
Luebke adds that AFS’s early years with Delta and RMCTools were much like learning a software package from Adobe or Microsoft. Getting up and running was straightforward and only a matter of minutes or, at the most, a few hours. However, that first step in expertise only encompassed a minimal amount of the software’s true functionality. AFS had “no idea” about the application’s true breadth for several years.
To date, AFS has installed over 30 customized trim presses with Delta motion controllers, and customers are happy with the results. Ultimately, full-featured hydraulic press motion control has given AFS a way to enable its clients with faster production, a cost-effective solution, and greater safety for end users around the world. •

The Application and Operation of Transducers
A word of caution on the terms transducer and transmitter. When these terms were first derived, they had distinctly different meanings and operating characteristics. Over time, however, these terms are commonly and many times erroneously interchanged, and several manufacturers do not really distinguish between the two types. And there are some manufacturers that offer both transducers and transmitters with both voltage and current output signals. Anyone specifying, testing, or troubleshooting such devices should be aware of the possible differences and how they can impact system behavior. In this article, unless otherwise stated, we’ll use the more generic term transducer.
Pressure transducers
Pressure transducers normally use a piezo-electric crystal, which has the property of producing an electric charge when a force or pressure is applied to it. The crystals can be stacked in layers to increase the output, which is then amplified to produce a usable electronic signal.
Pressure transducer
Flow transducers
The most common type of flow transducer is the turbine type, shown in the illustration to the left.
As flow passes through the device, the turbine wheel spins at a speed proportional to the flow rate. Each time a blade passes the inductive sensor, a voltage pulse is produced. The pulsed voltage signal can then be converted into an analog signal proportional to flow rate.
Linear displacement transducers
There are many different devices available to measure linear movement. Factors such as accuracy and environment will normally determine which one is used.
Linear potentiometers
Linear potentiometers are resistive, analog devices used to provide a voltage output signal in proportion to their mechanical displacement and are suitable for simple applications with limited speed and distance requirements. Although inexpensive and simple in design, linear potentiometers can experience linearity deviation due to ambient temperature variations. They typically require signal conversion to interface with modern digital control systems. Potentiometers are most affected by vibration and shock. •

committees report at IFPS Annual meeting
» IFPS HELD ITS annual meeting Sept. 26-29 in San Diego.
While the meeting was also available virtually, IFPS reports that 90% of the meeting’s attendance was in person. Here’s a recap of some meeting business.
Certification Committee
The Certification Committee has been hard at work updating several certifications. The Industrial Hydraulic Mechanic certification has been completely upgraded, the study manual was released in May, and the new tests were released in September. IFPS is receiving great feedback on this update.
Two other certifications are also being upgraded. Updates to the Connector and Conductor and the Electronic Control Specialist certifications are in the works to be released in early 2023. To participate on either subcommittee, email tblansett@ifps.org.
IFPS has developed resources supporting the preparation of certifications. These include presentations historically only available to Accredited Instructors. The committee is certain that these presentations can also benefit anyone preparing for a certification exam. The presentations, therefore, will be available for purchase on the IFPS website.
Another exciting development is the convening of the Spanish translation subcommittee. IFPS wants to translate all certification tests into Spanish by April 1.
Education Committee
The Education Committee is working on review training modules for the Mechanics Certifications.
The committee is also diligently working on new IFPS safety posters, which are free to members. The staff and committee have been working hard to fill the IFPS library with these original posters based on the safety tips included in our study manuals.
I became an accredited instructor so that I could offer the best available hydraulic training and testing content to my customers.
I can also say that my IFPS membership is the most valuable professional membership I own simply because of the quality and quantity of hydraulic training materials available for free to members. My IFPS membership has been incredibly valuable to me, and the certification tests IFPS offers are the best in the hydraulic industry.
What IFPS members are saying…
IFPS successfully conducted a course on fluid power fundamentals in conjunction with Waukesha County Technical College. The first session sold out in two weeks, and another is in the works. IFPS is developing a self-paced online course in fluid power fundamentals. It will be a great foundation for anyone wanting to learn fluid power basics.
The online certification review training modules for hydraulic and pneumatic specialists have been upgraded with additional content. Review training modules for the mechanics certifications are on the horizon for early next year.
Membership Committee
The Membership Committee and board of directors decided to retire all IFPS chapters. This decision was made with great consideration and with
hopes of modernizing the way IFPS members communicate and network. Although none have been confirmed, there are plans to accomplish this modernization. Members should be on the lookout for an email survey to provide input on implementing these modernizations.
Marketing Committee
The Marketing Committee and staff have been working on increasing our social media presence. We have increased the frequency of our posts from two to five times a week. Social media followers have grown by 20%, surpassing our goal of 10% in 2022. IFPS has also installed a chat function on its website to quickly answer questions community members may have. In addition, to continue to enhance our visitor’s experience, the website will be upgraded in 2023.

Electricity + Hydraulics = Efficiency
By Howard Zhang, Electrohydraulics R&D Leader, Parker Hannifin CorporationMorecompanies today are looking to electrify the hydraulic elements of their mobile machines. This trend toward electrification of traditional hydraulic work drives the need to reconsider hydraulic system design to achieve efficiency improvements that maximize battery performance. These efficiency gains are the result of multiple innovations in motor and pump technology as well as controls and system architectures that enable optimal system performance.
Compared to diesel engine-powered machines, where energy storage (in the form of energy-dense diesel fuel) is abundant, battery electric machines store less energy in the same design envelope. This means that battery-powered motion systems need to be designed to maximize efficiency. Even a single percentage point of gained system efficiency can have a significant effect on the machine design and save hundreds of dollars in battery costs as well as reduce weight.
A principal source of system efficiency lies in the conversion of electrical energy to mechanical energy. Electric motor design has a large effect on the efficiency of conversion. Parker’s global vehicle motor (GVM) design, for example, produces one of the most efficient electric machines on the market today. Utilizing a permanent-magnet design with a patented cooling system, the GVM achieves energy conversion of up to 97% efficiency
in a comparably compact package, giving machine designers space and weight savings compared to other motor designs. With a variety of system voltages used in the market today, the specific winding design is a key element of energy conversion efficiency.
One key factor in achieving high overall system efficiency is the choice of a motor winding that operates most efficiently at the required hydraulic pump speed. Permanent-magnet motors have a large change in efficiency over their speed range. Parker’s GVM provides a wide variety of winding options that match the most common voltages and operating speeds.
The next step in energy conversion for an electrohydraulic machine is transitioning the mechanical energy of the electric motor to hydraulic energy from a pump. The ideal selection of the hydraulic pump adequately supplies the hydraulic requirements of the machine while simultaneously minimizing losses.
Selection of pump type, such as piston, vane, and gear pumps, influences efficiency but must be balanced with other design considerations, like initial cost, noise, and pressure and speed limits. Noise in particular takes on additional importance in the absence of a noisy internal combustion engine masking the noise of other system components. Parker’s low-noise gear and vane pumps are good options that balance these often-competing factors for numerous applications and industries. With operational noise levels far below standard gear pumps, high volumetric efficiency, and reasonable acquisition costs, it is an attractive choice for electrohydraulic machines.
The work system architecture also impacts system efficiency. One option for maximizing energy efficiency and increasing the opportunity for energy recovery is to change the system’s electrohydraulic pump from a centralized system to a decentralized alternative (also known as a distributed electrohydraulic actuation system.)
The graphic on the next page provides a visual explanation. The left side models a traditional hydraulic system in which a single pump supplies pressure and flow to a group of valves throughout a piece of equipment. The right side shows a fully decentralized, optimal efficiency solution in which each function is supplied by an individual motor, pump, and valve.
To achieve the highest efficiency, overproduction of flow or pressure must be minimized. The use of permanent-magnet electric motors offers the added benefit of precise speed and torque control. This control can perfectly match the system flow and pressure to levels required by the current machine operation. This combines with valve spool control to create a flow-on-demand model that achieves simultaneous control of the electric machine speed and the control valve spool position. Minimizing pressure drop across the valve spool minimizes losses in the system, effectively increasing system efficiency. Parker, for example, uses a proprietary control algorithm to help identify the right combination and provides a smooth transition of the operation modes for effectively managing pressure and flow.
An electrohydraulic pump dedicated to a single axis also allows the use of regeneration to recapture energy (shown in the green arrows in the graphic). In the typical hydraulic system on the left, this energy is dissipated as heat through the pressure drop in the valve spool. In the modern decentralized system, the valve can be used for fine metering control, while the pressure drop is kept as stable as possible across the pump. This pressure drop is resisted by torque in the motor, which can return the energy to the batteries through the inverter.
Even using a single motor-pump combination but switching to an electric variable speed motor offers advantages over pumps mechanically driven by traditional diesel engines. Because electric motor RPM and torque vary when compared to a diesel engine, hydraulic system production can be more accurately matched to the exact demands of the system. This also applies when compared to variable pumps that consume significant energy even when at zero stroke due to all the moving elements. The ability to vary the speed of the pump on demand offers a significant efficiency gain.
There are many tradeoffs to consider when designing an electrified hydraulic system to achieve the required performance at a high level of efficiency.
The development of an efficient all-electric or hybrid system is not simply about replacing an engine with an electric motor; rather, it’s about how all the components work together in sync. A hydraulic system must be designed to accomplish the benefits of an electric system while leveraging the inherent advantages of hydraulics. An efficient design configures the system architecture to meet the application requirements and minimize the overproduction of pressure and flow, extending battery range and increasing machine utilization. •
lookingSMART SMART SMART SMART
In summer 2022, Andreas Lupold Hydrotechnik presented a new digital pump controller at the International Fluid Technology Colloquium in Aachen, Germany. It met with great interest from the expert audience. The benefits of the technology are that it optimally serves the trends of the industry in terms of sustainability, efficiency, complexity management, networking, and digitalization. The controller is the result of a group collaboration, including expertise from research.
The pump controller was developed holistically. Contrary to what is often the case, it is not a further development of an existing solution. Lupold took a systemic approach, from the analysis of the optimal valve type to the development of the controller, with its two valves and its architecture, the coil and its control, and the software – everything was thought out and developed from scratch. The result confirms this approach.
Consumption, flexibility
Thanks to demand-optimized control technology and lower power loss, the energy consumption of the controller is reduced by up to 95%. The design with two independent and continuously controllable, leakage-free poppet valves enables the demand-optimized supply of the hydraulic oil. The inflow can be defined independently of the outflow of the pressure medium into the control chamber of the pump. Currently, it can be freely decided every 20 milliseconds how the valves should be actuated, how far they should open, and how long to hold the selected valve position. This is more than the typical digital 0 and 1. The controller opens the momentarily unique possibility of ideally controlling almost every operating point of the hydraulic pump. This means that the controller characteristics can be digitally adapted and adjusted to
Lupold developed the digital hydraulic controller holistically based on concept 1, as it combines the advantages of the compactness, switching speed, and damping of concepts 2 and 3.
the customer's individual needs via software parameterization during both commissioning and operation. As a result, the controller can take on every previously known function, as well as new ones in the future.
This type of control revolutionizes existing approaches to pump control. Via the controller, the pump becomes an active, smart system component that interacts with the machine control system and adapts its operating state to the respective requirement. In this way, much more flexible and efficient system architectures can be realized than with hydromechanical or previous electrohydraulic controllers.
The poppet valves also offer principle-based advantages such as freedom from leakage, enormous robustness and compactness, and a lower tendency to oscillate. The two-valve concept also makes it possible to compensate for faults in the hydraulic system – such as those caused by contamination and valve sticking – and eliminate them by means of pulsed flushing. In addition to the pump controller, it has been possible to develop a robust and economical proportional valve which, in contrast to slide valve-based solutions, is also suitable for functional safety applications.
Commissioning
The enormous potential for the user becomes apparent with regard to the implementation and realization of digital maintenance and calibration concepts. Thanks to digital control, the valve system is ideally equipped for digital condition monitoring, predictive or preventive maintenance, remote access, and automated commissioning.
Especially the latter is a big plus for manufacturers of hydraulic pumps in the production of their components. Functional testing and calibration can be carried out digitally. The adaptation of the pump to the desired pump controller variant is freely configurable via the
controller software; the hardware remains the same. This not only speeds the testing process, it also reduces the complexity of component procurement because it requires only one controller, regardless of the application’s requirements.
Machine manufacturers benefit from the extended flexibility and the comfort functions in machine operation. Thanks to the possibility of connecting to digital fleet management and remote maintenance systems, the commissioning and setting of the controller – and thus the pump – can also be carried out remotely. Due to these prerequisites, the pump can be adapted to the ambient conditions and viscosity changes, for example, in the event of changing external factors in the field. On the system level, optimizations of the driving unit or powertrain can also result in additional efficiency benefits for the entire machine.
Remote monitoring of the pump is a major advantage for self-sufficient applications in areas that are difficult to access. Thanks to smart monitoring of the system, maintenance intervals can also be designed according to demand. This saves both personnel and energy resources.
The newly developed Lupold controller is optimized for the medium pressure range and is suitable for integration in new pump generations as well as for retrofitting on existing systems. The application and the technical solution are currently being patented. The programming interfaces and communication standards can be realized according to the requirements of the respective component or machine manufacturer. Certifications for functionally safe applications are also under consideration. •
HF-Impulse provides the following PID tuning parameters:
• Proportional gain: The output is proportional to the error.
• Derivative gain: The output is proportional to the previous error.
• Integral gain: The output is proportional to the rate of change of the error.
• Feed-forward gain: The output is proportional to the desired set point.
• Windup guard (output limit): The output is limited to protect against derivative windup.
• Derivative cycles: The derivative term is averaged over this number of cycles to dampen it and prevent overshoot.
• Integral hold: The integral term is limited for error greater than the hold value.
• Duty cycle minimum: The output cannot fall below this minimum value.
You can specify CAN network parameters such as:
• Transmit analog input value (enable).
• Set point message parameters: Select basic or extended joystick presets or choose custom for full control.
• ESDR communication: CAN address and baud rate.
• Set point message lookup table: Define the minimum/maximum message values and output limits.
Because the ESDR is designed as a closed loop control, output scaling is not necessary and therefore perfectly linear between minimum and maximum values.
Users can define parameters for how HF-Impulse communicates with the device. This requires a USB-to-CAN adapter, and three types are supported. You can also search the connected network for your device and perform firmware updates.
HF-Impulse charts operating telemetry in real time for monitoring, tuning, and troubleshooting activities. You can also export the data in CSV format for analysis. All data is plotted on a scale 0 to 5000 mV so the relationships of the values can be easily understood.
Flow control with LVDT sensor. For applications such as auto steering that need precise and repeatable flow control, you can use the ESDR with an LVDT position sensor that feeds the spool position back to the 0-5 V input.
Position control. When used with a position sensor integrated to the cylinder, the ESDR controls its position. The PID loop can be tuned to match the desired response. For example, it can be optimized for speed or to minimize overshoot/overcorrection.
Speed control. The ESDR can provide closed loop motor speed control when used with a speed pickup that provides an analog output.
Force control. Users can control the force of a press, grapple, or other clamping device using a proportional relief valve with a pressure sensor to communicate the load to the ESDR.
Torque control. Users can easily control the torque of a hydraulic motor with a proportional relief valve, using a pressure sensor for feedback.
The benefits of closed loop PID control are well known to industrial process controls. To date the technology has had a more targeted impact in the mobile hydraulics sector, being adopted primarily in high-spec, less cost-sensitive applications and on functions with critical performance demands. The demand on mobile vehicle controllers to execute PID across the spectrum of machine functions drives applications into faster, higher cost, higher I/O devices. To break down these barriers to adoption, HydraForce offers a unique distributed control strategy that allows simple plug-and-play CAN networked, coil-mounted drivers that can be easily added to individual functions as needed. Building a modular mobile machine architecture in this way gives vehicle designers flexibility to develop solutions that fit within ever-tightening cost and performance parameters. •
Potential applications
The ESDR-0201A has potential as a closed loop CAN control in a distributed control network. The main benefits are controlling a device by CAN message and distributing the closed loop control to lighten the load on the main vehicle control, forming a faster and more responsive system overall. Here are some potentially useful applications.
