A Call to Action As president
of the International Fluid Power Society this year, I have had the pleasure of attending a large number of trade shows and national meetings, completed many local customer calls, and heard the same dialogue being repeated: “We need skilled people.” I don’t care if it’s at the salesman level, engineering disciplines, trades, whatever. It’s the same mantra. Why is that? Well, I hear many reasons for this, but one does seem to be in the majority. Colleges and universities are not producing qualified candidates with exposure to fluid power. I can attest to the fact that I have talked to many good, young engineers just leaving school and they admit there are little or no fluid power classes, much less fully focused degree programs in this area. Wow! Nature seems to have run amuck here. We are taught early and often that nature always tries to fill a vacuum. Well, if that and the laws of supply and demand are truly correct, we should be flooded with young people running to our companies and fighting to get into our profession. Are the money and benefits not right? Is the work too hard and dirty? I think not. Check out the May/June issue of Fluid Power Journal and read the results of our recent salary survey. We take pretty good care of our people, from what I’ve read there. (By the way, isn’t the Journal looking great these days? Super congrats to the staff at IDP!) The problem, I believe, is exposure. These young people live in a world where fluid power is everywhere. The applications for it are growing—not shrinking—but nobody seems to be pointing that out. We don’t personally have to tell the world of this fact. All we have to do, individually, is talk it up to our own sphere of influence. This is my call to action for us all. Make an appointment with your local high school or middle school guidance office. Volunteer to give a talk at a career day function or similar. Let them know our chosen field of work is vibrant and strong, and that we need new recruits. The Society is well on its way of completing our Boy Scout Merit Badge project and feel this will be an awesome way to educate young folks about fluid power. Check out the May/June issue of the Journal and read the article about Alfred State College. These students are getting certified and securing jobs. Has a nice ring to it in today’s job market, doesn’t it? By Mark Perry, CFPHS, Again, I challenge you, get in the game. We need you! Basic Vacuum Schematics

vacuum material handling, there usually are only a handful of separate components, such as a vacuum pump, inlet filter, control valves, and cups. This article explains the basic schematics and how they should be used to illustrate to the installer or end user how his new system works. Schematic circuits should always be supplied with custom-made machinery, such as vacuum end-of-arm tooling, to aid the maintenance engineers in problem solving and the production engineers when they are looking for ways of improving efficiency after the installation or for adding components if the application changes years later. The body of a component should always have a schematic symbol on it, but when this is an adhesive label for instance, it could be illegible. Therefore, a master schematic will have the same schematic symbol for this component and how it is connected to associated devices. A vacuum schematic symbol, just like in pneumatics or electrical schematics, does not indicate what the component looks like, but only how it functions. Therefore, the same schematic can be used for many different manufacturers of similar functional devices.

Fig. 1 shows a very simple circuit: (1) compressed air supply, (2) single-stage vacuum venturi, and (3) vacuum cup. Compressed air is continuously supplied to the vacuum venturi, and once the cup (3) grips the part, the compressed air has to be turned off to release it. Therefore, a compressed air valve needs to be added, as shown in Fig. 2, to achieve this. Note that a two-position valve SHOWS the two positions. In this example, each position is relevant to its two actuators, one being a spring (rest position) and one being solenoid (actuated position). Fig. 3 shows the valve in each position.

The left side shows the pressure port (P) CLOSED, and the supply port (A) is connected to exhaust port (R). The right side shows the valve actuated by the solenoid where (P) is now connected to the supply port (A) and the exhaust is closed. This is a normally CLOSED valve. The term “normally� means as it suggests: the valve, without any external power attached to it, has its pressure port CLOSED. The port indicators of P, A, and R are shown in both positions. This is unnecessary, of course, which is why the valve only has the ports highlighted on one side in schematic symbols. Remember, the valve schematic in Fig. 2 shows BOTH separate valve conditions. Fig. 4 Fig. 4 shows more options that can be added to this circuit. A venturi external silencer (4) is now included, and a vacuum switch (5) indicates to the machine control that a specific vacuum level has been reached to enable the production cycle to continue. Also, between the vacuum cup (3) and venturi (2) inlet, a vacuum filter (6) has been installed to protect the venturi from dust or debris from the product being handled.

Fig. 5 shows a much larger circuit, but it uses the same components as shown in Fig. 4 with dual circuits utilizing two separate pneumatic valves. An alternative to this circuit is shown in Fig. 6, but instead of using compressed air valves to turn multiple venturi on and off, it uses one large multi-stage venturi and two vacuum valves to turn the vacuum on and off. Notice the direction of the arrows on the vacuum valve compared to the compressed air valve. The arrows indicate direction of air flow. The vacuum air flow direction is, of course, opposite to a compressed air supply.

Fig. 7 lists an assortment of commonly used schematic symbols in a vacuum circuit. Different manufacturers use different forms of these symbols, but they fundamentally look the same. This article is intended as a general guide and as with any industrial application involving machinery choice, independent professional advice should be sought to ensure correct selection and installation.

Offshore Technology Conference Sees Record Number of Attendees in 2013 104,800 in Attendance is SecondHighest in Show History xperts from the offshore energy industry around the world came together May 6-9, 2013 for the 2013 Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) at Reliant Park in Houston, Tex. Attendance at the conference reached a 30-year high of 104,800, the second highest in show history and up 17% from last year. Attendance surpassed the 2012 total of 89,400. The sold-out exhibition was the largest in show history at 652,185 ft2, up from 641,350ft2 in 2012. The event had 2,728 com-

panies representing 40 countries, including 244 new exhibitors in 2013. International companies made up 39% of exhibitors. “We had a terrific conference with deep and broad technical coverage, supported by excellent panels and executive keynote presentations,” said Steve Balint, chairman of OTC. “Technology is at the heart of the offshore industry, and it was all here on display at OTC 2013.” This year’s event featured nine panel sessions,
29 executive keynote presentations at luncheons and breakfasts, and 298 technical papers. Speakers from major IOCs, NOCs, and independent operators presented their views on the current challenges and future directions of the industry. OTC’s Spotlight on New Technology recognized 15 technologies for their innovation in allowing the industry to produce offshore resources. nental Shelf Governors Coalition participated on a panel discussion on offshore energy development and the need for improved cooperation between the states and the Federal government. U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell toured the exhibition floor and held a press conference where she discussed her commitment to work with industry leaders to ensure safe and environmentally responsible offshore oil and gas operations. Energy ministers and national oil company senior executives participated on a panel where they shared their perspectives on how the industry and its partnership models should adjust to address future supply challenges and what role companies and governments should play to shape the energy future. Norway’s Crown Prince Haakon and his wife, the Crown Princess Mette-Marit, attended the Annual OTC Dinner on Sunday to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Norway’s participation in OTC. The royal couple toured the exhibition floor, where more than 60 Norwegian companies were part of the Norwegian Pavilion on Monday. More than 100 Houston-area classroom teachers and 200 students attended the Energy Education Institute, where teachers learned how to teach scientific concepts of energy and its importance in a fun and exciting way. Participating students saw firsthand the exciting opportunities the oil and gas industry can offer. The Annual OTC Dinner was attended by more than 1,000 industry leaders and conference attendees, and raised $250,000 for the Offshore Energy Center. OTC also presented its 2013 Distinguished Achievement Award to Ken Arnold; OTC Heritage Awards to James Brill and Dendy Sloan; and the Distinguished Achievement Award for Companies, Organizations, or Institutions to Total’s Pazflor deep offshore development at the sold-out event on the floor of Reliant Stadium. OTC 2014 takes place May 5-8, 2014 at Reliant Park.

Global Manufacturing Update By Chad Moutray, Chief Economist, National Association of Manufacturers
May 10, 2013 – Last week, we learned that the U.S. trade deficit narrowed in March. While the headline number might seem positive at first glance, the trade gap shrunk on declining levels of both exports and imports. This report was one of the more disappointing ones of late. After slowing to 5.5% growth in 2012, manufactured goods exports have eked out only a 1% gain in the first three months of 2013 so far. The data suggest that export sales have essentially stalled. The largest weakness is in the European market, but exports to Canada— our largest trading partner—also declined. Asia and South America saw the largest gains, with manufactured goods exports to China up 9.3% during the first three months of this year relative to the same time period last year. There has been considerable weakness in U.S. manufacturing data during the past few months, with the Institute for Supply Management’s Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) decelerating and manufacturing employment unchanged in April. Regional sentiment surveys have also suggested softness in the sector, including higher taxes, tighter government spending, and regulatory uncertainties. Nonetheless, our largest trading partners continue to see slower sales, with discouraging export numbers highlighting the slowdown. Economic reports internationally also showed weakness. The JPMorgan Global Manufacturing PMI decreased from 51.1 in March to 50.5 in April, signifying very sluggish growth in production, new orders, and hiring worldwide. Four of the top 10 markets for U.S.-manufactured goods have declining manufacturing activity levels, with three of those markets being in Europe. Moreover, the other six markets are growing at a very gradual pace. GDP, industrial production, and employment data mirror these findings, with a deepening recession in Europe, slower-than-expected growth in China, and notable decelerations in Canada and other major trading partners. Tour de Force: How to Get Much More Out of Your Customer Tours Often a conversation with your customer isn’t enough. When you want to provide great new products that truly add value, you need to see what your customers need.

a B2B supplier, you can approach new product development one of two ways: you can ask your customers what they want or you can find out what they need. Of course, the sure-fire way to success is to address their needs in ways they may have never thought possible. And there’s no better way to do that than by touring their facilities. The name of the game is to find ways to help your customers that they wouldn’t think to tell you about. When you can tour the facility, you get a look at not only your customers’ general operations but also how they use your products. Specifically, you’ll gain a unique perspective. You’ll see everything with fresh eyes, and as a result, you’ll discover where your company and its products can really add value. When taking customer tours, vendors should be focused on helping their customers in two ways: 1. To gain context for the voice-of-the-custom-
er interview, which ideally will take place right after the tour. With this information, the vendor will be able to ask much better probing questions to understand their customers' needs once they’ve observed the customers' processes firsthand. 2. To look for potential areas of improvement that will benefit the customers. Keep in mind that you shouldn’t blurt out a recommendation as it comes to you. Let “search now, solve later” be your motto while on customer tours. Still, there’s a good chance your “fresh eyes” will be able to spot workarounds (temporary, sub-optimal fixes) and other areas you could help them improve later. Of course, performing more effective B2B customer tours will require you to make some changes and acquire new skills. For years we struggled with ways to help our clients improve their B2B customer tours. We’d seen too many tours where active thinking seemed to end once everyone had adjusted their hardhats. Then, three years ago, we devel-
oped a new tour methodology called AMUSE, which stands for Accelerate activity, Minimize input, Upgrade output, Simplify transition, and Eliminate activity. Learn more about this customer tour boosting methodology and how to make it work: Start by getting a preview. All customer processes are made up of a series of activities. This is true of a factory process like paint-making, fieldwork like house-framing, or a service like computer help-desk support. Ask your customer tour guide to help you draw a sketch of their operation before the tour. This helps you identify these activities, as well as a) their purpose, b) their sequence, and c) key inputs. Then apply AMUSE methodology to each activity in the process, striving for improved customer outcomes. And remember, during the tour, you might be only thinking about these outcomes. The time for asking questions will come later. Break up the workload. Hopefully, you’re not going into your customer tour alone, so use everyone in your group. We teach a meth-

The easiest way to understand AMUSE is to see what it would look like in practice. Imagine you make nail guns and you’re observing their use on a house construction site. The activity you’re observing at the moment is overhead nailing. How might you apply AMUSE methodology to help the customer (later) with this activity? Accelerate Activity.
Basic Questions: How could we make this activity go faster, thereby reducing labor costs and increasing capacity? Real-World App: What if you lowered the weight of the gun? Would the framer be going faster by the end of a long day? Minimize Input.
Basic Questions: How could we reduce the costs of material, capital, and energy applied to this activity? Real-World App: Would a higher-powered gun let the worker use cheaper studs full of tough knot holes? Upgrade Output.
Basic Questions: How could we improve the output from this activity, e.g., reducing defects or improving ultimate customer benefits? Real-World App: One way to upgrade output would be to lower defects—nails that don’t fully embed—perhaps by having the gun sense resistance and adjust for it? Simplify Transition.
Basic Questions: How could we streamline the transition between two activities, thus reducing inventory and lead times? Real-World App: Maybe the framer’s next activity is to set the gun down on the floor. What if you designed a hanger on the gun? Could it cut down on a lot of unnecessary bending?

Basic Questions: How could we totally eliminate an activity—perhaps by combining two or more activities—to reduce overall costs? Real-World App: Most studs have 14.5 inches between them. Was the framer’s preceding activity using a tape measure? If so, you might eliminate it by building a 14.5-inch guide into the nail gun. Are these all great solutions? Probably not. But what if your customer interview teams were highly skilled in these observational methods? Would they ask better probing questions during interviews? Would they uncover new ways to help customers? Would this give your company a competitive advantage?

NFPA Innovation Award Recognizes Jude Hueber for Innovative Use of a Hydraulic System in Commercial On-Road Vehicles
T
he 2012 NFPA Innovation Award has been presented to Jude Hueber for innovative hydraulic hybrid vehicle design performed for Lightning Hybrids, LLC. The award is presented annually to individual engineers or technicians to recognize innovative use of fluid power. Hueber received the award at the Transenergy Solutions Green Transportation Conference in Denver, Co. The hybrid hydraulic drive system designed by Hueber and a team of Lightning Hybrids engineers integrates components from various manufacturers with sophisticated software that controls the speed of fixed displacement pumps and accumulator pressures to optimize efficiency for lighter shuttle buses and delivery vehicles. Drivers can monitor system performance on the fly via a dashboard-mounted tablet computer. According to Lightning Hybrids, the system has achieved energy savings, or corresponding emissions reductions, of 33% to 40% over similar vehicles with conventional drivetrains. The winner was selected by NFPA Marketing Committee volunteers from nominations submitted to NFPA during the application process. In its review of Hueber’s application, the committee acknowledged that the anticipated cost savings from applying the technology of fixed displacement pumps and accumulator pressures will optimize the efficiency for lighter commercial vehicles. The NFPA Innovation Award is part of an effort to draw attention to advances in fluid power and the advantages of using fluid power by recognizing innovative applications of hydraulics and pneumatics by customers and users of fluid power. The jacking system software provides for the smoothest possible transitions between various operating modes, pressures, and loads—thus helping to reduce wear. It guarantees exact control of all the acceleration and deceleration phases, parallel and opposing cylinder strokes, and smooth transfer of massive loads. In addition, it enables automation transition between the four operating modes: leg lowering, platform lifting, platform lowering, and leg lifting. The transition between setting down the legs on the seafloor and lifting the platform is particularly demanding because during this transition, the platform follows the rise and fall of the ocean, putting enormous strain on the system. How the Hydraulic Jacking System Works The jacking system climbs up or down the platform’s legs, much like a monkey. Two yokes surrounding each leg are fitted with sets of holding pins. The first such yoke snaps its pins in place in holes along the leg. The cylinders of this first yoke then lift the platform. By the time the first yoke’s cylinders have nearly reached the end of their strokes, the second yoke has moved into position to insert its set of pins in the mating holes. Those pins at the second yoke now take over the load. The pins at the first yoke retract and the cylinders raise the first yoke so that its pins can again assume the load in the next position. This new continuous jacking system eliminates any interruptions during the lifting or lowering operation. It thus attains a constant jacking speed of one meter a minute or more.

The 11 trade fairs staged under the umbrella of Hannover Messe 2013, held from April 8-12, 2013, featured the keynote theme of “Integrated Industry.” The 6,550 exhibitors, highlighting a multitude of innovative products and technology solutions, provided a vivid showcase for this theme. The show’s five core topics: Industrial Automation and IT, Energy and Environmental Technology, Fluid Power and Power Transmission, Industrial Subcontracting, Manufacturing Technology, and Services and R&D, opened up new prospects for expert dialogue across all aspects of Industry 4.0. Below are some highlights of the event. Industrial Automation The process technology exhibition area provided comprehensive coverage of topics like pressure, filling level, and temperature measurement, as well as transmission and control engineering, along with a rich program of presentation and discussion forums. The Efficiency Arena offered lectures and debates on all aspects of energy efficiency in industrial processes. Motion, Drive & Automation (MDA) The exhibitors at MDA focused on efficient and sustainable intelligent integrated system solutions. All the market leaders in the sector were at MDA, with displays including roller bearings, gears, clutches, hydraulic cylinders and subassemblies, filters, valves, sealing systems, oil supply systems, and power electronics. The Renewable Energy Forum featured presentations on wind and bio energy, photovoltaic systems, and solar and geothermal energy.
Wind Wind power is seen as the driving force among the various renewable energy options. The leading manufacturers, subcontractors, logistics specialists, and service providers were on hand to present their new concept designs and technologies for onshore and offshore solutions. Higher towers, larger nacelles, longer rotor vanes, and more powerful transmission systems are making wind energy plants more powerful. Optimized plants for low-wind locations also have a part to play in making efficient use of wind energy. MobiliTec As the flagship tradeshow for electric drive technologies, mobile energy storage, and alternative mobility technologies, this event provided a comprehensive overview of electric mobility solutions. The eMotive pavilion included cuttingedge electric mobility displays. The MobiliTec user forum included discussion and debate on the latest research findings and trends in energy storage technologies and powertrain electrification. Visitors were also able to test-drive the latest electric vehicles on the extended circuit on the open-air site at the exhibition center.
ComVac Market leaders displayed compressed air and vacuum technology products and solutions— from generation and treatment to distribution and practical applications in systems and machines. The focus was on solutions that consume significantly less electric power and are more maintenance friendly, with lower noise emissions, adding up to clear efficiency gains in production operations. Other sector themes included after-sales segments like maintenance, repair, and service contracts, and consulting and analysis. This included the simulation of compressed air requirements, leakage checks, and audits and evaluation of compressed air systems and finance options. Industrial Supply The Industrial Supply exhibitors displayed applications and solutions-oriented products and technologies for functions like solid and sheet metal forming, machined components, systems and subassemblies, casting products, latches and locking systems, operating controls, fastening techniques and joining, and adhesive bonding technology. Lightweight construction topics were a special highlight.

In industrial applications, hydraulic pumps are usually driven with electric motors so the conversion to variable speed drives is more of an upgrade than a major modification. In mobile systems, hydraulic pumps are most often driven by internal combustion engines. It is more complicated to use variable frequency drives on mobile equipment because the electricity to drive a variable speed motor needs to be supplied by a generator or a fuel cell and then stored in batteries. While converting from the DC supply to AC for the motor is not technically difficult, adding the power supply would likely lead to a complete vehicle redesign. Nevertheless, it is worth looking at the paradigm shift of introducing variable frequency drives to electrically-generated rotary and linear motion. Hydraulics is only one of several methods of power transfer. The socalled “electro-hydraulic actuator� may be an interesting solution in some special applications, but not a viable general solution in multiple motion applications. There is additional cost for converting electric power into hydraulic pressure and flow. If this conversion occurs for each of multiple actuators, it will not be cost effective. The conversion should be done in a central power unit and the cost spread over the multiple actuators. The electric drive should not be seen as competition but as a partner, bringing technological progress and making hydraulics more competitive. Electric drives have made great progress in eliminating gear boxes and converting huge forces into linear motion. There are many examples of full-electric presses that were, in the past, the exclusive domain of hydraulics. There are different types of electric motors on the market including the induction motor, the permanent magnet motor, and the reluctance motor, each of which needs to be well understood by the hydrau-
lic engineer putting the electrohydraulic pump package together. In hydraulic linear motion, the asymmetry of a single rod cylinder can be compensated with modern integrated regenerative valves. This needs to be considered to minimize the flow demand from the pump before laying out the electric drive and hydraulic pump package. The beauty of a three-phase electric grid is the way it generates the rotating field of an electric motor. It only needs the determination of the number of poles in the motor to set the speed. If we insert a frequency inverter and make the speed variable within the lower and upper capabilities of the motor, we only need to choose the motor with the most suitable RPM range to drive our hydraulic pump. Typically the four-pole induction motor or the permanent magnet motor would be the preferred choice. The motor cooling needs special consideration because it may be required to drive a hydraulic pump at speeds ranging from very low to very high. There are a variety of designs for cooling the electric motor that include heat dissipation through the housing surface, a cooling fan rotating with the motor, a separate cooling fan, and even fluid cooling of the housing. The most common for induction motors is the fan running with motor speed. This solution may be inadequate when running at full torque and low speed and so the cooling needs of the motor will need careful consideration. There are a variety of hydraulic pumps on the market including gear, vane, and piston pumps. Their speed range under full pressure varies a lot with their frame size. Generally a smaller pump goes to higher maximum speed and creates less noise. The minimum speed depends more on the pumping principle than on the frame size. A hydraulic pump is lubricated by the

hydraulic fluid. Most pumps need to rotate for proper lubrication and cannot stand still under pressure. The marriage of the hydraulic pump and the electric motor starts with the selection of the pump and the desired speed for achieving the flow. The torque to turn the pump and thus the motor size depends only on the chosen pump displacement and the pressure. The required drive power is the torque multiplied by the RPM. Higher RPM results in higher power density of the motor and of the pump. Motors with variable frequency drives as pump prime movers were introduced into the market with the internal gear pump. Small displacement pumps with low inertia can run with flow and pressure control from the motor. High-precision gear pumps that have a single pumping chamber, require strong bearings to keep the gear position within tight tolerances. The typical vane pump with its two balanced pumping chambers and interchangeable cartridge without bearings offers new opportunities. The cartridge can be integrated in a motor with an extended shaft and allows for an extremely compact package. Vane pumps are also available as double or triple pumps in a common housing and can work as a simple switchable pump combination in order to choose the smallest possible motor for the application. A variable piston pump needs either to stroke in reverse flow direction to decompress, or alternatively, a pressure-compensated pump is
used with a small relief, piloted by the pump controller. A combination of a fixed vane pump with its low losses at low pressure and a variable piston pump with its high efficiency at high pressure is very often the most energy-saving solution. When putting together the electro-hydraulic package, consisting of drive, motor, and pump, all the inefficiencies get added up, and the target is to minimize. Good results cannot be achieved in a trial-anderror approach. An intelligent software tool is needed that has stored all the individual component efficiencies in relation to their parameters. At first the flow and pressure demand vs. time is entered into the so-called DriveCreater tool. A pump or pump combination is selected. The motor temperature is calculated at the given machine cycle in continuous-operating mode. The chosen motor requires a current, and hence a suitable drive is selected. Different solutions can be compared with regard to their consumed energy. A solution with inverter can be compared against running the motor straight from the grid. How much energy is saved in a specific application depends entirely on the machine cycle. For the startup of the drive, a setup tool is helpful to reduce the amount of programming work. IFPS Certification Testing Locations I
ndividuals wishing to take any IFPS written certification tests are able to select from approximately 325 convenient locations across the United States and Canada. The IFPS is able to offer these locations through its affiliation with The Consortium of College Testing Centers (CCTC) provided by National College Testing Association (NCTA).
To register for an IFPS written certification test: 1. Fill out an IFPS certification test application including your desired location by visiting www.ifps.org. 2. Submit your application with payment to IFPS headquarters. 3. Upon receipt of your application, you will be e-mailed instructions.
