Yates hydraulic cylinders are used in U.S. aircraft carrier applications, where they are constantly exposed to the elements. It’s no secret that water, air and salt cause corrosion to cylinders. The solution? Improve the durability. So that’s what we did. Our engineers upgraded cylinder capacity from 2,000 to 3,000 PSI, improved the seals to resist the effects of saltwater and opted for chrome-plated stainless steel after our extensive testing proved how it outperforms standard steel rods at resisting corrosion. Not long ago I found myself looking for a career change within the fluid power industry, and it was at that time I truly realized the value of my involvement within the IFPS and the certifications I have earned. Without question, it helped me land a great new position because my new employer appreciates that the initials “IFPS” also stand for professionalism within the industry. Furthermore, as an applicant looking for a new opportunity, it was great to see my potential employer marketing itself as a supporter of the IFPS and all of its programs, including education, certification, and most important, safety. Working within the hydraulics industry has the potential to expose us all to dangerous situations, so knowing I was joining a company committed to the safety of its employees and customers was certainly important to me. Once on board, I quickly came to realize that my new employer was also committed to supporting existing employees in their development by offering membership, certifications, and various other programs offered by the IFPS. The net result of this commitment is that it makes the organization a top industry player. More recently, we decided as a company to take our involvement in the IFPS and certification even further by facilitating Connector and Conductor (C&C) Job Performance Tests for our business operators so that they may market themselves as IFPS certified within the industry and to customers. We are proud to be experts in on-site hydraulic hose replacement, and therefore, we believe in holding ourselves to a higher standard by becoming C&C certified. It is important to note that the IFPS offers certifications that cover just about every function within the fluid power industry, including mechanics, technicians, and specialists within both the hydraulics and pneumatics industries. Global Manufacturing Update BY CHAD MOUTRAY, PH.D., CBE, CHIEF ECONOMIST, NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF MANUFACTURERS

March 17, 2017 – At this time last year, the global economy was one of the biggest downside risks to growth, with a “growth recession” in China at the top of that list. In light of such challenges, manufacturers were pulling back on spending and hiring. Since then, the international economic environment has begun to move in the right direction, including in China. The Caixin China General Manufacturing PMI increased from 51.0 to 51.7, which was not far from December’s 51.9—its fastest pace since January 2011. It was also the sixth straight monthly expansion following a few years of slower growth. The illustrates just how much the market has stabilized and begun to improve recently, including pickups in both industrial production and fixed-asset investment year-over-year rates in the latest data. Nonetheless, we continue to see decelerated activity in China from more robust expansions in prior years, a trend that is likely to continue. For its part, the J.P. Morgan Global Manufacturing PMI expanded at its fastest pace since May 2011. Both demand and production saw twoyear highs, with hiring expanding at rates not seen since August 2011. Moreover, the index for future output also moved higher, at nearly a

two-year high, and would seem to indicate strong growth in the coming months. In addition, 11 of the top-15 markets for U.S.-manufactured goods exports experienced growth in their manufacturing sectors in February, unchanged from January but up from just seven in August. The strongest manufacturing growth among our top trading partners occurred in the Netherlands, Germany, the United Arab Emirates, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Taiwan. Germany and the Netherlands experienced multiyear highs in February, notching the best index readings in 69 and 70 months, respectively. In contrast to those markets Brazil, Hong Kong, and South Korea continued to contract. Each has been mired in negative territory for much of the past two years. Of course, South Korea has been in the news of late due to the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye on corruption charges. As a whole, however, emerging markets have strengthened of late, mirroring the larger global trend. In fact, manufacturing activity in the emerging markets rose at its fastest pace since July 2014, expanding for the eighth consecutive month. Indeed, when looking at the market-by-market analysis, you see a lot of multiyear highs in the headline PMI numbers, which is quite

The Markit Canada Manufacturing PMI increased at its quickest clip since November 2014, boosted by improvements in Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario. Real GDP in Canada grew 2.6% in the fourth quarter, led by strength in consumer spending but slowed down by drags from business investment and net exports. Likewise, Europe has continued to perform admirably despite political uncertainties on the continent. Mirroring the global numbers, manufacturers in the Eurozone reported their best growth rates since April 2011. Eurozone real GDP grew 1.7% year over year, and the unemployment rate remained at its lowest level since May 2009. Perhaps more importantly, pricing pressures have started to pick up, with the annual inflation rate rising to 2.0% in February, its highest level since January 2013. As such, the European Central Bank is likely to start easing up on monetary stimulus later this year. It is still early in 2017, but the manufactured goods exports picture is already better this year than the past two years. Using non-seasonally adjusted data, U.S.-manufactured goods exports totaled $83.09 billion in January, up 48.7% from $79.23 billion in January 2016. With that said, the U.S. trade deficit rose from $44.26 billion in December to $48.49 billion, its highest level since March 2012. Key trade appointees for the Trump administration move forward, as the administration releases its first annual trade policy report. The World Trade Organization’s (WTO) Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) entered into force. Expectations remain high that the administration will soon notify a renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFPA), as it considers other potential negotiations as well. The NAM continues to push for movement on nominations to the Export-Import (Ex-Im) Bank Board of Directors and is focused on other key issues involving conflict materials, the Miscellaneous Tariff Bill (MTB), and intellectual property (IP).

HYDRAULIC CYLINDERS

PER ISO STANDARDS

There are four main ISO standards for mounting dimensions related to hydraulic cylinders. Their nomenclature and other information are listed in Table 1. These cylinders are typically available with a selection of two types of threaded ports or a flange-type hydraulic port. Some manufacturers elect to stock some cylinder components in a semi-finished state and machine the ports as specified by customers. Most cylinders are available with a wide range of mounting configurations, with rear-clevis mounts (Fig. 1) or front-flange mounts (Fig. 2) being some of the most popular. Other mounts, such as trunnion, foot, or rear-flange mounts, are also available. Cylinder structure can be broken down to the pressure envelope section and the piston rod end connection section. The pressure envelope section is normally connected to the machine frame, and the piston rod end is connected to the portion of the machine to which force and motion needs to be applied. This is normally done with a threaded connection on the piston rod end. The ISO standards define the maximum overall size of the cylinder envelope, as well as the mounting dimensions with tolerances. In the case of flange mounts, the standards define the flange size, bolt pattern, bolt size, and the dimension to the piston rod connection point. Similar for a rear-clevis mount, the pin diameter, lug size, and dimension to the piston rod connection point is specified. In all cases, mounting dimensions, such as WF and XC (Figs. 1 & 2), are referenced to the shoulder (reference point) of the piston rod with the piston in the retracted position.

ISO hydraulic cylinder standards specify mounting dimensions and overall envelope dimensions only. They do not specify materials, internal construction, or how the different cylinder components fit together. Manufacturers are left free to construct their products as they see fit based on their own manufacturing methods. Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) can benefit themselves, as well as their customers or users, when designing hydraulic equipment with hydraulic cylinders built to ISO standards. OEMs normally have preferred vendors. In cases where the preferred vendor is not performing because of quality, price, or work stoppages, an OEM can use another vendor’s product built to the ISO standards without having to make changes to its hydraulic equipment. At times, the end user of the equipment may be in a part of the world a very long way from the original source of the hydraulic equipment and may require a hydraulic cylinder replacement. Parker Hannifin Corp., as well as other manufacturers, can provide hydraulic cylinders built to ISO standards in several parts of the world. The user may be able to locate a local source for the replacement cylinder without going to the original OEM or original cylinder manufacturer. When a light bulb burns out in our house, we go to the local store and buy a new bulb, not caring where or who manufactured the light fixture or the bulb. We know that we can place the bulb in the light fixture and it will fit and work properly. This is one of the benefits of standardization.

Injection injuries have led to loss of limbs and long-term paralyses, as well as death. The incident reports contained throughout this comprehensive course are graphic and depict how extreme injection injuries can be. This course also provides methods of first aid. Understanding and identifying where these hazards exist in the workplace will greatly reduce the learners’ risk. Exposure Level - $99 Workers are exposed to hydraulic systems on many different levels. Many hydraulic incidents and fatalities are a result of people working around hydraulic systems without understanding the related hazards. This online course provides an awareness of hydraulic hazards in the workplace. Special attention is given to most common misconceptions, including environmental health. High-Risk Maintenance Level - $149 Maintenance and repair of equipment that utilizes hydraulics systems is extremely hazardous. Maintenance personnel are engaged in procedures that expose them to a high level of risk of injury or death from hydraulic system hazards. I TOOK MY CERTIFICATION TEST, WHY DO I NEED TO RECERTIFY?

Because technology changes all the time, and IFPS wants to make sure you are up-to-date with industry information. You wouldn’t want your doctor operating or making a diagnosis if they didn’t continue to stay current in their fields, would you? Therefore, the Fluid Power Certification Board requires ongoing experience and education/training in the fluid power industry. The recertification process works on a point system called Professional Development Points (PDP). There are many ways to earn points. • Work in fluid power field [a minimum of three (3) years is required] • IFPS membership • Participation in your local IFPS chapter • Participation in other fluid power organizations (FPDA, NFPA, NAHAD, SAE, NAFA, etc.) • Volunteer positions held in fluid power organizations • Fluid power instruction (either by instructing or receiving instruction, including taking one of the IFPS free-to-members web presentations) • Fluid power student (full-time enrollment in an academic program) • Technical presentations (either by presenting to employees/customers or by attending outside presentations) • Fluid power training/seminar attendance • Submit an article or technical paper to the Fluid Power Journal • Submit a sample test question with required references and appropriate graphics and/or schematics

WHAT IF I FORGET TO RECERTIFY?

Your IFPS certification is valid for five (5) years, at which time you need to renew your certification(s). IFPS sends recertification reminders in the forms of e-mails, letters, and postcards; however, it is your responsibility to submit the required paperwork by the expiration date. If you do not submit the paperwork by the expiration date, you may be required to retake the test and you may no longer use the certification

designation after your name. If you are unsure when your certification expires, you can log into “My IFPS Profile” from www.ifps.org, give us a call at 800-308-6005, or e-mail askus@ifps.org.

AEROSPACE SENSORS Respond to New Demands

The advent of advanced composite materials used in constructing aircraft, along with the push to reduce costs of operation, have resulted in significant demands for enhanced requirements with component parts such as sensors. These next-generation, efficient aircraft require tough sensors with real-time measurement capability to monitor the status and health of the aircraft. The result is both an increase in the quantity of sensors needed per aircraft, as well as a demand for more robust designs that survive in the harsher environments of EMI, lightning, temperature extremes, and vibration all in the smallest package with the lightest weight possible.

The market for aerospace sensors and transducers has undergone many changes over the last decade. Frost & Sullivan has predicted that the market will have more than doubled between 2010 and 2020, continuing a booming trend in commercial aircraft production expected to persist over the next 20 years. This step-up in demand, alongside requirements for tougher standards, has continued to push the envelope of the next-generation technology of new sensors.

New Composites Present New Challenges for Sensors Designers Aircraft with new composites, such as carbon fiber, are much lighter, providing for greater fuel efficiency and longer flights, but they do not conduct electricity. This fact makes for a very different situation from the previous generationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s large aluminum body, which dissipates a lightning strike. Wire mesh beneath the composite helps to absorb the 200K Amps

spikes and transmission of electromagnetic interference. While protective, the new mesh results in higher voltage and higher current pulses lengthened in duration by the increased resistance path. (See Fig. 1). Sensor designers are confronted with the difficult task of ensuring protection from these higher challenges. Due to the larger number of sensors demanded and the tighter spacing needed for the added functions, these sensors are specified to fit in the same envelope that was previously allocated to less demanding requirements. Meeting these challenges was not possible until a few years ago, when newer protection technologies were developed.

Innovations in Sensor Design The creation of custom electromagnetic interference filters and lightning protection circuits now allow the critical sensing components to function effectively despite the higher

demands. Two separate approaches have been developed. One involves the use of Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS) in miniaturized packages incorporated into the sensors to enable absorption of high energy pulsSAE es from indirect lightning strikes. These ARP5412 TVS devices are thermally coupled to the heat-dissipating surfaces of the sensors to quickly eliminate heat buildup and survive multiple strikes. The second opposite approach provides an electrical isolation to block the pathway of the lightning spike. This requires the incorporation of high dielectric voltage isolation through mechanical insulation or DC/DC converters. (See Fig. 2.)

Elevated EMI Requirements In addition to the increased lightning requirements are the higher intensity Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) requirements. Due to the same type of electrical shielding differences with composites, and the increased number of electrical noise-generating applications (e.g., switched mode power supplies, stepper motors, communications, etc.), EMI protection has been elevated to higher and higher levels. As with the TVS, new miniature packaging to achieve better filters in smaller spaces is a recent technology advancement.

Other Technology Advances Spur Sensor Evolution A number of technological trends impact aircraft measurement devices. As new aircraft programs are developed, expansive thinking considers additional features that can be incorporated into the new design. Examples include new optimizing controls, more distributed power generation, and various initiatives to improve fuel economy and reduce maintenance, to name a few. These applications lead to enhanced performance needs, such as higher accuracy, resistance to vibration, higher temperatures, and lower power consumption. All of these requirements must be addressed in the next generation of sensor designs. The market for aerospace sensors and transducers has undergone many changes over the last decade, and sensor technology must be sophisticated to meet the complex design requirements of today’s aircraft. Research and development is a continuous process to innovate solutions. Engineering and production teams need to be highly skilled to accommodate aircraft supplier needs. The step-up in demand for sensors requiring tougher standards drives the push for next-generation technology.

NEWS Local Students Challenged by Fluid Power Industry After weeks of preparation, Jimtown Junior High took home the Overall Champion trophy from Daman Products’ 2017 Fluid Power Action Challenge held at Bethel College on March 3. They also captured the Team Challenge Award, earning 45 points by moving a canister with their machine. Trophies were awarded to the top 5 teams in the following categories: Teamwork, Portfolio, Machine Design, Team Challenge, and Overall Champions. Other winning teams were John J Young Middle School (Machine Design award); LaSalle (Portfolio award); and Jackson (Teamwork award). Q A Engineer’s Dream Has Wings Jeanne Deaver’s life was changed her senior year of high school when a teacher offered her advice on college choices. Today, the mechanical engineer and Alaska Airlines pilot credits mentors and teachers for pushing her toward her dreams, even when things seemed bleak. Now she does the same for the next generation of aspiring STEM students. She took time to share her fascinating story with NEF.

Q WHAT OR WHO INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE AN ENGINEERING DEGREE? Growing up, my favorite subjects were math and science. Right before I started my senior year of high school, my family moved to South Dakota. I was still undecided about what college to attend or what kind of career to pursue. Then one day after class, my math and physics teacher, Larry Hines, suggested that the local engineering university, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SDSM&T) might be a good fit for me. His suggestion shaped the course of my life. I attended and earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering.

Q YOU’VE SAID FLYING IS YOUR DREAM JOB, BUT IT WASN’T YOUR FIRST CAREER. WHAT DID YOU DO WHEN YOU GRADUATED FROM COLLEGE, AND HOW DID YOU MAKE THE TRANSITION? Prior to graduation, I did a college internship at The Boeing Company in Seattle. During the internship program, engineers (from both Commercial and Defense & Space) met with us to discuss career opportunities available at Boeing. During one of these sessions, I learned that some of the Boeing pilots had originally began working at the company as engineers. I was hired into the internship program by a chief engineer named Marlene Nelson. One weekend during the summer, she took me up on my first flight on a small airplane. I was hooked! Additionally, I was introduced to Boeing Test 32

Pilot Captain Suzanna Darcy-Hennemann, who inspired and encouraged me to look into pursuing flying as a career. My final year at SDSM&T, I took flying lessons and earned my Private Pilot’s License. After graduation, I returned to Seattle for a full-time position at Boeing. My career started where my internship left off—in Payloads Engineering. During my time at Boeing, I also worked in Flight Test Instrumentation on basic certification for 737/757 and 777 aircraft. My final rotation at Boeing was in Service Engineering, supporting narrow body customers (707/727/737/757) in Southeast Asia. I was really enjoying my engineering career, and I also really enjoyed flying as a hobby. Pilots who are building their time and “paying their dues” do not make a lot of money. Leaving a promising and profitable career to take a step into the unknown was not easy. I had very little time to doubt my decision, though, because I had so much encouragement. Every time I saw Captain Suzanna or Marlene, they would ask how

much flight time I had and what I planned to do next. At the age of 28, it was time to make the transition. My husband, Darren (also a Boeing engineer and incredibly supportive of my career change), was working on a project in Phoenix. I took a leave of absence from my engineering job and met him in the desert. Because of the optimal weather, I quickly finished my training and began flight instructing. When Darren’s project ended, we returned to Seattle, and I instructed at Galvin Flying Service. The tragic events of 9/11 significantly reduced the need for pilots at the airlines. I was discouraged, but fortunately, I saw Captain Suzanna at an event at the Museum of Flight. She told me to keep going because this was just a temporary setback. I took her advice, instructed a couple more years at Galvin, and became chief flight instructor. When the economy improved, I flew Embraer Brasilias and Canadair Regional Jets at SkyWest Airlines. And finally, in the summer of 2012, I started my dream job of flying Boeing 737s for the hometown favorite…Alaska Airlines.

Q HOW DOES HAVING AN ENGINEERING DEGREE AND YOUR PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE AT BOEING HELP YOU AS A PILOT? In the modern age of flying, the systems on airplanes are very complex. Understanding how each system functions is an integral part of being a safe pilot. It is so important that airlines will allocate approximately two weeks of the curriculum to focus on aircraft systems. Many people say that learning a new airplane is like drinking from a firehose. Luckily for me, most of this information was obtained while working on WWW.FLUIDPOWERJOURNAL.COM • WWW.IFPS.ORG

the 737NGs at Boeing. I used the time in ground school to refresh, fill in the gaps, and then focus on other aspects of flying the airplane safely. An engineering degree is also a safety net. The airline industry is cyclical, and pilots are required to pass a medical examination as often as every six months. A well-educated pilot with an engineering degree will have more options if they lose their medical or are furloughed than someone who just obtained a basic degree to meet the requirement for the job. In my short time at Alaska Airlines, I have been surprised to learn how many of my pilot co-workers have an engineering degree. Becoming an airline pilot is a difficult process. But I believe that the difficult curriculum in an engineering program fully prepares a person for this task. Additionally, a few of my college classmates have continued their education after engineering and pursued careers in patent law, bio-engineering, and finance. I believe the engineering degree was as helpful to them in their new careers as it was for me becoming a pilot.

Q PLEASE TELL US ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF MENTORING IN YOUR LIFE AND WHY IT IS IMPORTANT FOR PROFESSIONALS IN STEM-RELATED FIELDS TO REACH OUT TO THE NEXT GENERATION. When I was a little girl growing up in western Nebraska, there were very few women in STEM. There were even fewer flying Boeing airplanes at a major airline. I believe the reason I was successful is because of my mentors who provided the guidance and encouragement necessary to help me stay focused. Their words helped shape my inner dialog when things become difficult. I am so thankful to all of them for helping me succeed. This generation has a lot more opportunities to pursue STEM careers. But they must be aware of their options to know that they exist. That is why it is important for all of us, as professionals, to look back and offer a hand up to the generation behind us. I give back as a mentor at Raisbeck Aviation High School, through Amelia’s Aero Club, at Seattle’s Museum of Flight, and by taking the opportunity to show my workplace to every enthusiastic child who is on my flight.

The latest data published by the National Fluid Power Association shows industry shipments of fluid power products for February 2017 increased 2.5% compared to February 2016, and increased 1.0% when compared to last month. Pneumatic shipments increased, industrial hydraulic shipments remained unchanged, and mobile hydraulic shipments decreased in February 2017 when compared to February 2016. These charts are drawn from data collected from more than 85 manufacturers of fluid power products by NFPA’s Confidential Shipment Statistics (CSS) program. NFPA Forms Strategic Alliance with FIRST®

NFPA started a strategic alliance collaboration with FIRST® that will harness the similarities between the mission of FIRST and those of NFPA’s workforce development to get more students aware of and interested in fluid power and engineering. The partnership will not only promote FIRST programs to NFPA’s membership and education partners, but will also encourage them to become FIRST Mentors, Coaches, and Volunteers to extend the reach of the Association’s fluid power educational and career-building efforts to include FIRST students. NFPA will also offer a $40,000 merit-based scholarship to a high school senior who participates on a 2017 FIRST® Robotics Competition team. The scholarship is to be used to study engineering at any accredited technical school or university in the United States.

NFPA CAREERS SITE CONNECTS COMPANIES AND CANDIDATES BY ERIC LANKE, NFPA PRESIDENT/CEO

The National Fluid Power Association (NFPA) has launched a new NFPA Careers (nfpahub. com/careers) website designed to connect students with fluid power companies looking for job candidates. Companies can use the site to post their job openings and create a company profile. Jobs can be searched by location and years of experience required, along with type: full-time, part-time, and internship. Students can use the site to post their resumes and learn more about the companies posting jobs. Job posting on NFPA Careers is reserved for companies who are Pascal Society-level donors to the NFPA Education and Technology Foundation. The association believes this will be essential to help it raise the money necessary to keep managing the programs that result in job candidates from the fluid power education programs at its partner universities and tech schools.

Fluid Power on Capitol Hill NFPA, CCEFP, and several industry supporters visited Capitol Hill on February 27-28, 2017 to promote the proposed Commercial Off-Road Vehicle R&D Program through the Vehicle Technology Office within the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

THIS PROGRAM IS IMPORTANT TO THE FLUID POWER INDUSTRY BECAUSE: • The commercial off-road market consumes 8% of total transportation energy, which is larger than either marine or aviation. • The commercial off-road vehicles in the U.S. consume 17.3 million gallons of fuel per year, containing 2.4 quads of energy and generating 180,000 tons of CO2. • The commercial off-road vehicles market exceeds $100 billion and employs more than 250,000 people in the U.S. • Energy efficiency and productivity innovations are key drivers for jobs, exports, and technological leadership in the global off-road vehicle market. • There is currently no dedicated program in the federal government for pre-competitive research in this area. We are requesting $5 million for FY17 and $10 million for FY18 for pre-competitive R&D to improve

the energy efficiency of fluid power systems for commercial off-road vehicles. Research would be conducted by teams of industry and university researchers selected through an open competitive grant process.

POTENTIAL TECHNOLOGIES TO ACHIEVE THIS LEVEL OF ENERGY SAVINGS INCLUDE: • Increased efficiency enabled by new architectures and more efficient fluid power components • Systematic modeling tools to investigate new architectures, user interfaces, controls, and connectivity • Tighter integration of fluid power systems with combustion engines • Connected and automated off-road vehicles to improve efficiency and productivity • The NFPA and CCEFP will help bring people together so that university and industry proposal teams can be formed. Walking Beam Cylinder Drifting Up

A processing plant in Pakistan had a walking-beam system that would move coils of finished product to shipping for processing. Several “pot-belly” cylinders would lift long, horizontal rails with “V” notches cut in the top surface. A large shaft was inserted through the middle hole of the coils and extended out past the coil sides, and would nest in the notched rail, lifting the coils up and above fixed “Y”-shaped supports. Once lifted, two other cylinders would move the rails horizontally, approximately 8 feet. Then the “pot-belly” cylinders would retract, lowering the coil shafts into the fixed supports. The lifting rail was retracted 8 feet, lifted and horizontally advanced the coil 8 more feet towards shipping. One large, pilot-operated directional control valve would move 8 cylinders. After an annual shut down, where the long hoses and directional valve were replaced, the cylinders started drifting up, contacting and lifting the horizontal rails, which caused a problem. The employees checked the tank line check valve, and it was working fine. They suspected the new directional valves since they had to switch the solenoid wiring to get the correct action.

Most cylinder manufacturers and cylinder repair houses now commonly use urethane seals. They are strong, durable, and great for normal hydraulic fluids. Unfortunately, water-based fluids and heat degrade urethane rapidly. The fine pulverized particulate found in the rod seal area was what remained of the urethane back-up ring. Jon Rhodes had originally supplied the customer with new cylinders designed around the water-glycol fluid they were going to use, and the cylinder manufacturer did not use urethane. Repair houses should always know what fluid will be used in the cylinders they repair.

SNEAK PEEK AT THE FUTURE The new Tech Experience amplified the technology throughout the show floor, with an emphasis on emerging construction innovations that are driving change and process improvements across the industry. Three interactive zones gave attendees a first-hand glimpse at the technologies shaping the jobsites of tomorrow, infrastructure development, and workforce development. The world’s first fully functional 3D-printed excavator anchored the Tech Experience, with a 3D Printworks further exploring additive manufacturing’s possibilities for construction applications. The “Tech Talks” forum gave attendees a chance to hear from global innovators and technology leaders to discuss what lies ahead with an emphasis on applied and blue-sky innovation to benefit infrastructure projects and construction jobsites.

TRANSPORTATION REIMAGINED: INFRASTRUCTURE VISION 2050 The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) helped to convene a high-level conversation on the future of transportation infrastructure. The campaign’s three phases—Complain, Dream, and Build—drew hundreds of ideas from across the world about how to revolutionize infrastructure. Five finalists squared off in the challenge finale event. The top winner was a proposal from a pair of University of California-Berkeley students to leverage autonomous vehicle technology to develop a surge-priced “Hyperlane” to ease congestion and improve mobility. OVER $100,000 RAISED TO HELP CONNECT MILITARY VETERANS WITH INDUSTRY JOBS Attendees and exhibitors partnered to raise over $100,000 to help military veterans find quality industry jobs through multiple charity

events throughout the week. The proceeds, which benefit the show’s official charitable partner, the Call of Duty™ Endowment, were raised through online, silent and live auctions, as well as an after-hours concert on Wednesday by the multiplatinum rock band Foreigner. EDUCATION AND EXHIBITS: INDUSTRY BEST PRACTICES AND PRODUCT INNOVATIONS Comprehensive education programs helped attendees sharpen their professional skills and improve their businesses’ efficiency and productivity. CONEXPO-CON/AGG offered a record 143 education sessions, grouped into 10 tracks, including a new Technology Track. IFPE hosted the industrywide Energy Efficient Hydraulics and Pneumatics Conference in addition to hands-on “college courses” on effective use of hydraulics in mobile equipment.
