Board President Looks Back on ‘21: ‘a very trying time’ By Rocky Phoenix, CFPMHM, CFPMHT, CFPCC, CFPMMH, 2021 IFPS Board President and Chairperson
»
IN DECEMBER, MY term as president and chairperson of the board of directors of the International Fluid Power Society comes to a close. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in our industry for staying with fluid power through a very trying time. In this momentous year, I’ve seen our industry blindsided because of a lack of workers, ongoing supply problems, and price increases on almost everything. Through all of it, the fluid power community persevered. It remains an industrial leader, and we are resolved to succeed and grow. I would like to offer my thanks to small-business owners for keeping the faith and looking to a better year ahead; to companies and corporations for not forgetting about your dedicated fluid power professional employees; and to IFPS members and staff, who adapted and grew through the uncertainties we encountered. Uncertainty was a common experience in 2021. It surrounded the IFPS spring meeting in March. To assure everyone’s safety, we decided to hold a virtual meeting. It was a first for IFPS, but because of the foresight and expertise of the IFPS staff, we accomplished the meeting with great success and great attendance! We learned a lot from that experience, and I believe it has helped us to communicate better with members around the world. The virtual meeting experience may likely be a permanent part of our future, as it allows, for example, inductees to the Fluid Power Hall of Fame to participate in their induction without traveling to Reno, Nevada, for the IFPS fall meeting in October. While virtual meetings are a great tool, they can’t take the place of face-to-face interaction. We found this to be true when comparing

the fall virtual board meeting experience to a live meeting. People understand each other more clearly in person than in the virtual world. It was a year of accomplishments at IFPS, including the revamped Mobile Hydraulic Mechanic certification, which was updated with the latest industry standards and expectations. It is a fantastic piece of work that will be received well in the industry. Thank you for the very hard work of the committees and staff at IFPS. I’d like to point out a number of other successes this year. We introduced a pilot mentorship program for individuals advancing in the fluid power industry. We moved forward with new social media strategies to help us stay in touch with members and, we hope, attract others into IFPS and the field of fluid power. The Fluid Power Reference Handbook and Fluid Power Symbology Guide continue to be popular resources. Our webinar library is growing and is a popular resource. All these projects came from the involvement of IFPS members who desire to advance fluid power technology and education. In closing, I want to say that it has been an honor to serve IFPS in 2021. I’m looking forward to the growth and new ideas that flourish because of all those who are committed to the fluid power industry. Thank you!

Solution to the June 2021 problem:
Find the Cylinder Rod
We need to find a solution where the resistance would produce a pressure of 1 psi for each hp. 60 mph = 88 feet / sec. 1 hp = ? lbs. of pull x 88 / 550 1 hp = 6.25 lbs. of pull 3” diameter cylinder = 7.068 sq. in. Since 1 hp = 1 psi, then 6.25 lbs. requires 6.25 sq. in (effective rod-end area) 7.068 – 6.25 = .818 sq. in. of rod A = D² x .7854 Working backward, rod diameter = 1. inches. igital transformation and Industry 4.0 are common buzz words these days. They focus on real-time data and automation. But how should we approach this? The manufacturing industry generates more data than any other sector of the economy, and because of all this data, companies are making analytics a priority. In a recent General Electric survey, 42% of manufacturers have said “big data” is the top priority, and another 45% said it is one of the three highest priorities.
health and product quality is critical. The classic consumer example of this third wave is the ride-sharing service Uber. Suddenly, owning a car is not necessary; getting from A to B is all that matters, which also testifies to the impact that Uber’s transformation has had on the automotive industry.
Digital transformation is happening in three waves.
1. Aircraft deicers at airports have a serious impact on airline operations.
Wave 1. The waters that most of us have navigated in recent decades are in wave 1. It is the classic ownership model, i.e., a customer pays a one-time price for a machine or after-sales service. As the OEM, you provide a warranty for a limited amount of time, and any service work beyond that follows the classic model of dispatching a technician or bringing in the vehicle for maintenance or repairs.
Wave 2. In wave 2’s usage-based model, a customer pays to use a machine but does not own it. Uptime becomes more critical. The customer simply may not pay you if the machine is not performing 100%. Insight into the machine’s operation to detect early wear and tear becomes a necessity. With that information, you can plan maintenance and repairs during scheduled downtime.
Wave 3. In this final stage, wave 3 evinces an outcome-based model in which the customer pays only for the finished product. Frankly, he could care less which machine you used to get there. But as you are responsible for the final product, so a full understanding of machine

How does digital transformation apply to industry? Here are some examples. To avoid bottlenecks, stops to refill trucks with the deicing fluid are staggered. This requires a real-time view of current liquid levels in each truck. Additionally, tracking the usage per aircraft may be mandated by the FAA.
2. Refuse collection vehicles are constrained by weight and cycle time. Improving the speed of pickups and optimizing capacity enables trucks to pick up more refuse in less time. This is only possible by accurately measuring key body data and preventing unplanned maintenance.
3. Mobile drill rigs are a good example of highly complex on/off highway vehicles that utilize a large number of sensors and actuators. The operator must manage the drill operation as well as the safety zone of the drill head. Using
WWW.FLUIDPOWERJOURNAL.COM • WWW.IFPS.ORG
area surveillance to assist the operator with these tasks and display the parameters in the cab significantly improves the working conditions and safety of the job site.
4. What if farm equipment automatically identified weeds or pests and eradicated them? Besides efficiency and cost reductions, the decreased use of crop-protection chemicals and reduced emissions into the environment show the advantages of this technology, which could ultimately eradicate harmful substances from farming. 5. The traffic of cargo vessels in ports is tightly scheduled. There is little time to load or unload cargo. Automated guided vehicles have simplified and quickened the transportation of containers by knowing where and when to pick up the freight. Automated machines are helping the fast-growing needs of the ship-to-shore industry.
The smart factory Industry 4.0 is often referred to as the fourth industrial revolution and represents a new stage in the organization and control of the industrial value chain. In manufacturing, Industry 4.0’s modern control systems and smart sensors have resulted in what is often called the “smart factory.” IoT devices in smart factories lead to higher productivity and improved quality. With minimal investment, quality-control personnel can monitor manufacturing processes from virtually anywhere by connecting a smartphone to the cloud. By applying machine learning algorithms, manufacturers can detect errors immediately, rather than at later stages when repair work is more expensive. In the industrial world, while Industry 4.0 is influencing overall equipment effectiveness, there are multiple areas where there could be improvement, including: • Machine availability – reducing planned and unplanned stoppages. • Machine performance – eliminating slow cycles and small stops. • Product quality – reducing levels of scrap, defects, and rework. • Energy optimization – preventing air or vapor leaks. • Environmental impact – improving pollution control. Let’s look at two examples. Air compressor • Machine availability. Vibration sensors monitor the pump health to prevent catastrophic failure and loss of availability. You can monitor five key areas of machine problems: impact, fatigue, friction, severity, and temperature. Monitoring this data in real time allows the sensors to predict pending failures and limit catastrophic damage. • Machine performance. Compressed air leaks cause compressors to work harder and produce more air than needed. Flowmeters reliably measure compressed air flow, pressure, temperature, and total consumption, alerting users to leaks that reduce compressor performance. • Product quality. Using sensing elements that measure accurately, users can attain precise control of the compressed air system, maintaining quality. • Energy optimization. Vibration analysis sensors allow for monitoring compressor performance and provide alerts when pumps are operating inefficiently and wasting energy.
WWW.IFPS.ORG • WWW.FLUIDPOWERJOURNAL.COM
Hydraulic power unit • Machine availability. Particulate contamination in hydraulic oil can lead to sticking or accelerated mechanical wear of system components. Reliable oil-cleanliness sensors can measure particle size and distribution and alert users before the particle contamination reaches a critical level. •M achine performance. As a hydraulic pump wears over time, more hydraulic oil leaks past the pump seals to the case drain. Flowmeters can reliably measure the flow of case drain oil, providing real-time feedback on diminishing pump performance. • Product quality. Over time, water can get into a hydraulic system, causing corrosion, increasing oxidation, and leading to the inaccurate position of system components like valves. Humidity sensors can monitor the level of moisture in hydraulic oil and alert users when it reaches a critical level. This eliminates improper positioning of hydraulic devices, ensuring quality output. • Energy optimization. Vibration sensors monitor pump performance and provide alerts when pumps are operating inefficiently, wasting energy. • Environmental impact. Without accurate sensing technology, false levels may fail to indicate overflowing hydraulic oil that can potentially impact the environment. Capacitive point level technology with no moving parts can provide reliable detection of overflow conditions.
What does the future look like? Consider some predictions. • With real-time maintenance, data from machine sensors predicts which maintenance activities should be performed on the machine and when. This can be as simple as time-based maintenance decisions or as complex as using powerful analytical models to predict component wear and tear. • Instead of operator fatigue being measured in hours of work or jobs completed, performance is measured based on operator alertness with the assistance of camera technology. • An operator score card allows for increased safety, efficiency, a drop in insurance rates, and should, at the same time, increase overall job satisfaction. • Tracking technology verifies that the correct tool is used for its purpose and location. Additionally, it ensures that expensive assets are not left on the job site and that the machine with the proper tools is deployed to a job site. • Real-time diagnostics eliminate the need to deploy service technicians with laptops. Instead, critical data empowers an operator or engineer to evaluate, analyze, and troubleshoot problems.
Making history Digital transformation allows machine builders to reimagine how they design, manufacture, and service equipment. While Industry 4.0 is still evolving, companies that are currently adopting new technologies realize its potential. These companies upskill their workforce to take on the responsibilities made possible by IoT, and they recruit new employees with the right skills. We might not have the complete picture until we look back in 30 years. But for now, we’re making history!

Hydraulic Cylinders in Entertainment
W
hen thinking about hydraulic cylinders, typically the first applications that come to mind are construction equipment like excavators and dump trucks or industrial applications like presses. However, a relatively unknown hydraulic application is entertainment. Except for fluid power enthusiasts, most people would not buy a ticket simply to watch a hydraulic cylinder extend and retract. However, hydraulic cylinders work behind the scenes to provide linear motion for amusement parks, animatronics, live shows, and other entertainment venues. These cylinders have much in common with their more utilitarian cousins, but they often have unique features to meet the requirements of the entertainment industry. One common requirement is the need for reliability. If the hydraulic cylinder on a dump truck fails, the owner of the dump truck loses revenue during the time the truck is inoperable and not hauling loads. In the same way, if an entertainment venue must cancel a show because of cylinder failure, there is a loss of revenue from ticket sales. So cylinders for entertainment must be designed for a high level of reliability because, as the old saying goes, “the show must go on!” Welded-type cylinders provide a high level of integrity through numerous pressure cycles, even in high-vibration environments. They can also be easily disassembled to replace the seals or perform other service work, a task that is even simpler with bolted head glands. One specific area of reliability is the rod sealing system. Although rod-seal leaks are never 8

desirable, some users of mobile and industrial equipment tolerate a certain amount of leakage on a machine that may already be greasy or dirty. At an entertainment venue, cleanliness has a high level of importance to the patrons and, by extension, the owner. So there is little tolerance for unsightly leaks that may form a puddle on the ground, create an oil slick on the water, or become a collection point for dust and debris. The cylinder must be designed with highly efficient seals that endure many cycles and wipe the rod clean before it extends. The rod wiper must keep out contamination that may damage the rod seal. In some cases, a buffer seal may be added to dampen any pressure spikes from reaching the main rod seal, extending seal life. A leak detection port may be added to indicate if the rod seal has been compromised. This port could be used for a visual sight gauge, electrical pressure switch, or drain tube to a holding reservoir. Any of these methods can be used to alert maintenance personnel when it is necessary to schedule repair downtime. The leak detection port is especially valuable when the cylinder is used in or around water.
Hydraulic cylinder for an underwater stage.
Challenges presented by water Seventy-two percent of the earth is covered by water, and water is also a common feature in the entertainment world. From fountains to water features on rides to wave pools, H2O is ubiquitous because people find water fascinating. Water poses two primary threats to hydraulic cylinders: corrosion and water ingression. Carbon steel or ductile iron, common raw materials for cylinder components, are prone to rust in the presence of water. This rust is not only unsightly, over time it weakens the material and can result in failure. Fortunately, there are solutions to combat this problem. For the barrel or body of the cylinder, corrosion can be slowed by special paint finishes, for example, inorganic zinc primers or two-part marine-grade epoxy. If that is not adequate, nickel plating the exterior components provides an even more robust barrier than paint. Although typically not viable on large cylinders due to cost and material availability, smaller cylinders can be manufactured from stainless steel and bronze to inhibit corrosion. WWW.FLUIDPOWERJOURNAL.COM • WWW.IFPS.ORG
Closeup of the hydraulic cylinder developed for an underwater stage.
Animatronics cylinder engineered by Aggressive Hydraulics. The cylinder rod, which is typically chromeplated carbon steel, presents a unique challenge for corrosion protection. Chrome is a hard surface that is compatible with the rod seals, and chrome also provides a limited amount of corrosion protection. Chrome itself is resistant to rust, but it has microscopic cracks that let moisture penetrate to the base material, allowing it to rust and lift off the chrome plating. The options for the cylinder case are not viable for the rod; paint would strip off when the rod cycles, and nickel plating is too soft. There are viable solutions, including chrome application methods that significantly reduce the microcracks and form a stronger barrier to protect the base material. A different option is to plate the rod with a layer of nickel plating below the chrome, as the nickel provides corrosion resistance, and the chrome provides a smooth, hard surface for the seals. Instead of trying to protect the base material, yet another strategy is chrome-plated stainless steel, in which the chrome only provides the surface for the seals and the base material is resistant to corrosion. Although 300-series stainless steel provides more corrosion resistance, 17-4 stainless is typically used for the combination of good corrosion resistance and high tensile strength. The drawback of stainless steel, whether for the barrel or the rod, is higher cost and lower material availability, especially in larger diameters. Corrosion is not water’s only threat to hydraulic cylinders, which are typically designed only with seals to keep in the high-pressure fluid. If the cylinder is submerged or splashed, water can find a way inside the cylinder and mix with the hydraulic fluid. This contamination can result in fluid breakdown and internal rust of the cylinder and other hydraulic system components. WWW.IFPS.ORG • WWW.FLUIDPOWERJOURNAL.COM
Special seal configurations prevent this water ingression. An additional rod seal turned outboard to seal against the rod can prevent water from entering the rod gland. Because the seal material typically used for hydraulic fluid often swells or softens when exposed to water, the outboard seal should be a compound compatible with water.
Protecting electrical sensors Watery environments can also pose a threat to the linear position sensors that are often integrated in cylinders. There has been a significant trend in all types of machines and equipment to add electrical sensors and controllers, and hydraulic cylinders for entertainment reflect the same trend. One application is multiple cylinders working together to raise and lower an underwater stage. An integral linear position (Continued on page 10)

sensor can enable synchronization of the cylinders and provide an alarm notification if the stage is out of position. Although current standard sensor offerings have reasonable water ingression protection for most environments, severe or submerged applications require nonstandard configurations. In the example of the underwater stage, the sensor is protected by a custom-designed sealed enclosure with a cord grip for the terminating cable. In another example, that of animatronics cylinders that bring full-sized characters to life, specialized connectors designed for subsea environments are used to maintain electrical reliability. The job of these connectors is to transmit the output signal from the sensor integrated in the cylinder. Sometimes these outputs are common analog or digital outputs, but other cases require unique outputs. Often the controllers are highly specialized, as they go beyond typical motion control and also manage lighting and sound for the ride or show. They may require special sensor outputs like PWM – pulse width modulated. In other cases, the system may have been designed years ago with a specific type of resistive sensor that is no longer available. Because of the cost and the high level of integration, changing the electronic controller is not a viable solution. So a replacement cylinder must be designed with a sensor to provide the same feedback. This level of customization is not limited to the sensor. Hydraulic cylinders range from standard offthe-shelf products to catalog options and highly customized types. In the case of an off-the-shelf cylinder, the customer must design the machine around the standard product or modify as needed. Catalog cylinders provide more options but are still limited to the predetermined configurations offered by the manufacturer. Custom-welded cylinders provide a high level of design flexibility, which is very important in many entertainment applications that require unique solutions. One example is a cylinder to generate waves in a pool at a water park. The duty cycle demand is high, as the cylinder operates continuously every day from open to close, and the tolerance for leakage of oil into the pool water is low. Therefore, the cylinder is designed to prevent fatigue failure and includes a dual seal and leak-detection port configuration. Although not submerged, the proximity to water requires corrosion protection features, including chrome-plated stainless steel rod, epoxy paint, and salt bath nitride head gland. The next time you visit an amusement park, live show, or even a sports event, keep your eye out for hydraulic cylinders at work behind the scenes to entertain the audience.

Lights! Camera! Hydraulics! Entertainment Applications Take the Stage By Jordan McDowell, Content Strategist, G&G Hydraulics Corporation
H
ydraulic systems have many applications in almost every industry, including entertainment. They are used to create special effects, move props, and arrange stage lighting. Yet few people know how they work or what makes them so special in this industry. In this article, we’ll look at how various applications in the entertainment industry use hydraulic systems.
Why hydraulics? There is no doubt that hydraulics is an efficient and cost-effective means of transferring energy. Whether powering heavy machinery or controlling things like the rigging, lighting, and staging systems for concerts, the entertainment industry must rely on the flexibility, versatility, and power density of hydraulics. Hydraulic lifts are used in many different capacities, including crew transport between show sites and moving stage scenery. A hydraulic lift can quickly move a lighting rig into place, which can otherwise be one of the most time-consuming and difficult tasks when setting up an event. 20
NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2021
Hydraulic systems are used to set up rigging, stage lighting, and operate retractable roofs that allow for natural light in venues like concert halls or theaters. They are used for sliding stage platforms and sound systems that can be moved into position while performers continue their act, sometimes without interruption.
" "
Workers use hydraulic lifts to set up sound systems, stage lighting, skylights, retractable roofs, and sliding stage platforms. Let’s look at the four main hydraulic applications the entertainment industry uses.
Powering special effects One of the main applications of entertainment-industry hydraulic systems is powering special effects. For example, hydraulic equipment can simulate waves from earthquakes. Huge water tanks and pumps create these visual spectacles that draw crowds into amusement parks or give people a new way to experience movie magic. The power for such effects is produced by an engine or turbine connected to the pumps located in a separate building where special-effects equipment is set up.
Creating props and set pieces Other hydraulic applications include creating props, set pieces, and animatronics. Hydraulic cylinders are used to control the movements of armatures, which are scaffold-like structures that support movable parts on a figure. Hydraulic systems can also be used to create illusions. Construction of theater or film sets often involves hydraulics because they make building scaffolding structures easier. Most props and sets in these buildings are movable, and hydraulics makes it possible to move them safely. WWW.FLUIDPOWERJOURNAL.COM • WWW.IFPS.ORG
Hydraulics allows designers and artists to create intricate designs that bring their visions to life. When properly maintained, hydraulic cylinders may last for over 25 years. This makes the initial construction cost-effective.
Stage lighting The stage-lighting industry has been a major user of hydraulics for the past 50 years. A theater might have six or more automated spotlights mounted on its catwalk. These spotlights must move quickly to light different sections of a stage, and each is moved using hydraulics. While there may be less-expensive options, benefits such as ease of control, making adjustments to lights from a distance on a catwalk, and a reduced risk of injury from an emergency situation on stage, make hydraulics a preferred choice for stage-lighting control.
Designing large sets When designing and constructing large-scale sets, many factors must be considered. The set needs to be designed in such a way that the hydraulic equipment can be installed without interfering with lighting, scenic elements, actor safety, and other aspects of the production. Additionally, because sound plays an important part in any production, designers must be sure that the hydraulic equipment does not interfere with the sound system.
One major factor in designing a set involving hydraulics is the amount of weight the stage floor can carry. Designers need to consider the size and weight of the hydraulic equipment and its impact on the set. If the stage’s weight tolerance is limited, designers may need to put additional
"

"
supports into place. A hydraulic system added to a show that already has lights weighing over 500 pounds may require additional support to avoid injury to people or damage to other parts of the set. Whether the hydraulic equipment is for
moving or lifting purposes, its overall weight and size determines the type of flooring the stage needs. After determining the type and usage of the hydraulic equipment, a sloped stage may be used to provide space underneath for the hydraulic equipment, eliminating the need for greater support. Depending on the type of entertainment, various considerations may come into play. Does it need to have a high or low center of gravity? Does it need to be easy to assemble and break down for traveling shows? Other similar questions have an impact on the design. As we’ve seen, hydraulics has been a boon to the entertainment industry, and the industry uses hydraulic systems for a wide range of purposes. They are found in live music, movies, stage productions, and other professional theater shows. They simulate a realistic environment in which performers thrive, whether on stage or film, allowing professionals to control sound levels, lights, set changes, and more with little human intervention.

LINEAR DISPL ACEMENT
SENSORS
The first factors to consider when selecting linear displacement sensors are the mechanical interface, dimensions, contact, noncontact, and environmental factors. Then review the electrical input/output, voltage, analog, A to D, PWM and SSI factors. After high-level choices have been made, lower-level choices must be made based on performance specifications and environmental ratings. The performance characteristics of linear displacement sensors require a detailed consideration. The following parameters should be cross referenced against application requirements.
Figure 1: Linear displacement sensor.
Nominal Linear Range The basic variable in linear displacement sensor selection is the maximum range of core motion, (see figure 1) which produces an analog output of specific linearity. Active stroke is the distance a core can travel from its null position in this linear region.
Linearity Error A sensor output is a nominally linear function of core displacement within its linear range of motion. A plot of output voltage magnitude versus core displacement is essentially a straight line (see figure 2). Beyond the nominal linear range, output begins to deviate from a straight line into a gentle curve.
Figure 2: Linearity error.
Sensitivity, Scale Factor, and Full-Scale Output Full-scale output is the output with the sensor’s core positioned at fullscale displacement and with its primary excited at a specified nominal input voltage. Sensitivity is usually specified in terms of millivolts output per thousandths of an inch core displacement per volt of excitation (mV/ mil/volt) or as volts output / inch /volts input. Sensitivity varies with excitation frequency, which must also be specified. Sensitivity mostly affects the gain required of the sensor’s signal conditioning electronics.
Resolution Resolution is the smallest core position change that can then be observed in the output. Sensor resolution is essentially infinite. An infinitesimal change in core position will produce an output change. In practice, the limitation on system resolution is the ability of the associated electronic equipment to sense the change in output, which is called the signal-to-noise ratio of the system. The gradient value (G) is the inverse of the velocity in which a strain pulse moves through the sensor and is typically expressed in microseconds per inch or millimeter. The gradient value is typically found in manufacturer’s literature on a label attached to the sensor itself. The clock frequency (CF) is the frequency of the counter in the customer-supplied interface and is usually expressed in megahertz (MHz). Resolution (R) can be expressed as 1 / (G x CF) Example: Assuming a gradient value of 9.000 microseconds per inch at a clock frequency of 56 MHz, what is the resolution in inches? R = 1 / (G x CF) = 1 / (9 x 56) = 1 / 504 = 0.001984 inches.
Repeatability The ability of a sensor to reproduce the same output for repeated trials of exactly the same input under constant operating and environmental conditions is the single most important factor for sensor selection. Called repeatability, (see figure 3) this parameter is the only irreducible and uncorrectable source of static error in any electromechanical measuring system. Repeatability error is the limiting factor in making any sensor-based measurement.
Hysteresis The difference in indicated position (see figure 4) is when the same point is reached from two different directions. Repeatability refers to travel from one direction only, hysteresis is from two directions. For many applications, LVDTs are perhaps the most common type of displacement transducer, their main limitation being overall length.

Magneto-Strictive Transducer The magneto-strictive transducer is based on a wire connected down the center of a tube known as a wave guide. The object being measured will have a circular target attached with cylindrical magnets built in (see figures 5 and 6). The target and object are free to move along the length of the wave guide. A pulse is transmitted along the wire, and the processor begins counting the time it takes for the pulse to reach the target and generate a return echo (much like radar). The amount of time that elapses from this allows the processor to calculate position, direction, and velocity of motion, which is then transmitted as an output signal in one of several formats, including analog and digital.
Figure 5: Magneto-strictive transducer with target.
LVDT Figure 7 illustrates an LVDT (linear variable differential transformer) and consists of a primary and two secondary coils surrounding a soft iron core connected to the moving component. The primary coil is connected to a high-frequency AC supply and voltages are induced in the two secondaries by transformer action. If the two secondary coils are connected in opposition, then the cores centralized, the induced voltages in each coil will cancel out and produce zero output. As the core is moved away from the center, the voltage induced in one secondary will increase and in the other will reduce. This now produces a net output voltage, the magnitude of which is proportional to the amount of movement, and the phase is determined by the direction. The output can then be fed to a phase-sensitive rectifier (known as a demodulator), which will produce a DC signal proportional to movement, with polarity dependent upon direction.
Figure 6: Magneto-strictive transducer mounted on a cylinder.
Figure 7: LVDT.
Comparative characteristics of various linear position/displacement sensor technologies.
Angular Position Transducers As for linear movement, rotary potentiometers can be used for measuring angular position, but the same problems of wear will still apply and so, again, they are confined to relatively simple applications. The rotary equivalent of an LVDT is known as an RVDT (rotary variable differential transformer) and is illustrated in figure 8. A specially shaped cam of magnetic material is now rotated inside the primary and secondary coils by the input shaft. The profile of the cam determines the amount of magnetic coupling between primary and secondary and hence, as with the LVDT, an output signal is provided proportional to shaft rotation. The limitation, in this case, is the maximum angular movement that can be achieved and still produce linear output, which in practice may be on the order of ±60°.
Angular Velocity Transducer
Figure 8: RVDT.
Angular velocity (RPM) is normally measured with a Tachogenerotor. These again may be of several types, but the most common is the DC tacho, which works in a very similar way to a DC generator, i.e., a voltage is produced proportional to the shaft drive speed.

New Problem
Drifting Cylinder in a Rolling Mill By Robert Sheaf, CFPAI/AJPP, CFPE, CFPS, CFPECS, CFPMT, CFPMIP, CFPMMH, CFPMIH, CFPMM, CFC Industrial Training
»
THE ENTRY STATION on a steel-rolling mill lifts a coil of steel, and a separate circuit moves it into position for uncoiling and processing. As the station moves into position, the roll raises to the original position. The drift slows down the loading station because workers must constantly inspect and manually adjust it to the needed height. When the return filter was accidentally removed, the system drift stopped, but installing the missing element caused the drift to return. When the company installed a new line, they dismissed the problem as needing to remove air from the lines. But over time the cylinder would not hold its position. What could be the problem?
Solution to October 2021 problem:
Valve Flaw Leads to Faulty Pressures
The drill press OEM found the same problem with the valve that the company experienced. The OEM corrected it by moving a solid internal plug to drain the valve to the tank line and not the cap end of the cylinder. But the OEM did not change the name plate to show the correct configuration. Several D05 size pressure-reducing valves provide the option of draining the valve to one of the actuator lines or back to the main tank line by moving an internal plug. This allows reduced pressure on port A or B or both ports. To view previous problems, visit www.fluidpowerjournal.com/figure-it-out.

EQUAL FOOTING Swing-Axle Cylinders Manage Uneven Terrain Marcel Knobloch, Sales Product Promotion, Bucher Hydraulics
M
obile machines have to meet widely differing requirements. To get to a job site, they need good off-road capability. While they are working, however, they require high rigidity and stability. Added to this are the increasingly demanding safety and environmental regulations. This dual requirement is fulfilled by swing axles, which can be locked when in working mode. Swing-axle cylinders (SAC) are based on the principle of the plunger cylinder, in which the piston rod serves as the piston. When open (axle unlocked), they enable a vehicle to drive over uneven terrain. The undercarriage can then to a great extent follow irregularities in the terrain without individual wheels lifting up and off the ground. When closed, they lock the axle and thus ensure high rigidity during working operations.
The cylinders are designed for secondary pressures up to 600 bar (8,702 psi) and require minimal installation space. As safety components, they are responsible for the stability of the mobile machine. A malfunction can result in the machine toppling over, with disastrous consequences. Swing axles are usually attached to the machine undercarriage, while the hydraulic power supply is situated in the rotatable superstructure. This means that the oil supply/return for the cylinders, as well as the control signals for the valves, must be routed through a swivel joint.
Success from just one line This was the starting point for the development of the SAC from Erding, which at the time resulted in the RH series (RH from the German for check valve with hydraulic release, i.e., pilot operated). Instead of the usual two separate lines, the developers succeeded in combining the pressure and control functions in one line. The key feature: the valves open or close the flow path, depending on the pressure level. A defined pressure closes the valve. To put it another way, the oil flow fills the cylinders; its pressure switches the valves. This is significantly more energy efficient than the two-line solution.

Getting rid of one line halves the pipework costs, and in addition only one connection through the swivel joint is needed. As well as that, the RH series can be controlled with just one inexpensive 3/2 valve. The valving in the SAC usually consists of a pilot-operated check valve that traps the oil in the cylinder. When the control pressure exceeds a certain value, the good area ratio within the valve enables it to open against the pressure inside the cylinder. The swing axle is therefore able to move thanks to an exchange of oil between the cylinders. There are other systems on the market in which the valve opens abruptly when the limit value is exceeded. However, this behavior carries the risk that a heavily loaded cylinder can suddenly give way, causing the machine to tilt or even topple over.
With the DRH valve, when the swing axle is in locked mode it can be recharged with only one line by applying a specific tank preload pressure. This forces oil into the unloaded cylinder, and the piston rod then rests firmly on the axle without any gap. For the machine operator, this means stiffer and more controllable machine behavior. The integrated throttle check valve dampens any pressure peaks that may occur in the control line when the SAC is unlocked, thus preventing possible damage. The valve is extremely compact and requires little installation space in the SAC's body, which is a machined casting. In the event of a pipeor hose-burst, the valve closes automatically and goes into the closed/ locked position.
RM for an electrified future E-mobility is also making inroads into mobile machinery. At present it is still only the smaller machines that use electric drives, but the trend is clear. Bucher Hydraulics is more than prepared for this development. The type RM cylinder is the ideal solution. Basically, it is a closed system in which the oil just shuttles between the two cylinders.
For swing operation, the valves open and the oil can shuttle freely between the cylinders.
The RM swing-axle cylinder for electric machines.
A major safety issue with most of these solutions is hose- or pipe-burst. Under no circumstances may it result in instability of the machine. It follows, therefore, that the pressurized oil in the cylinder must be prevented from flowing out. Any outflow that occurs must be restricted to a very slow rate. The newly developed and patented DRH (throttle check valve, pilot operated) complements the Bucher Hydraulics SAC range. In essence, it is a check valve with an additional flow control function. The valve sits in a cartridge that is mounted axially in the cylinder and includes the port for the hydraulic line. Inside the cylinder, the check valve is series-connected with a flow control valve that throttles the outflowing oil. This throttling improves travel comfort and guarantees a safe switchover from swing mode to work mode. One further advantage: in line with the modular-system principle, we now have a standard cylinder plus screw-in cartridge valves with DIN or UNF threads. This reduces inventories and improves serviceability.
Preload integrated in the valve
In this case, an electrically actuated valve performs the control function. The system needs only one electrical line through the swivel joint. Due to kinematic effects, small stroke differences may occur. These are compensated by a small oil accumulator, which also provides constant pressure. This ensures the same machine stability as with the DRH cylinder. The only external connection required is an electrical one: hydraulically, the system is completely self-contained.
•
Oil compressibility and other effects result in a settling of the machine. This results in a few millimeters of clearance between the cylinder rod and the axle pad on the unloaded side, which can lead to increased wear if the load changes.
