Training the Fluid Power Professionals of the Future BY BRIAN J. CARR, GENERAL MANAGER, PERFECTION SERVO

ASK A GROUP of sixth graders what they would like to be when they grow up. You will receive glamorous answers, such as professional athletes and actors. You will hear prestigious answers, such as doctors and lawyers. You will also hear adventurous answers, such as police officers and pilots. If you ask the same question to that same group of students when they are high school seniors, you will likely receive some of the same answers, but many will state a profession they hadn’t thought about six years earlier. However, I’m fairly confident that a very small number of high school seniors utter the words “hydraulic” or “fluid power” when describing their future careers. The fluid power industry, like many others, has the challenge of educating the populace about the industry and the opportunities within. Perfection Servo, a hydraulic and electronic industrial repair company, has

faced this challenge for many years. Finding young talent with fluid power experience is difficult due to the pool being shallow, and finding experienced talent is even more difficult because those individuals are coveted assets of companies within our industry. That typically leaves us to grow our talent from within. We will introduce intelligent and hardworking individuals to the world of fluid power by having them join our hydraulic teardown and prep team. Once they have paid their dues, we will offer company-sponsored fluid power education at local colleges. Those individuals who demonstrate an understanding of the discipline are then promoted into our hydraulic test department, and then the very best are selected to begin training as a hydraulic technician. This process of formal education and on-the-job training can take anywhere from 3-6 years. We invest a lot of

time and money into these individuals, but in the end we are rewarded with a highly productive member of our team, and they are rewarded with a stable and high-paying career. This process has worked and will continue to work, but we are also experimenting with an internship program. We have partnered with Northwest State Community College and have offered two summer internships for those who are working towards their degree in Mechatronics. The program runs 10 weeks, and we provide a housing stipend and living wage. Our interns spend four days of every week working in our teardown/prep/test department, and one day shadowing an experienced technician. They learn a great deal about Perfection Servo’s business, the wide variety of hydraulic components in the marketplace, and the challenges that manufacturers and hydraulic service companies face. The response we have received on the program has been terrific. Our interns have appreciated the real-world experience, and Perfection Servo has enjoyed contributing to the training of our future fluid power professionals. Perfection Servo’s internship program will continue to supply a steady infusion of talent and will enable Perfection Servo to remain a leader in the industrial hydraulic repair marketplace.

Global Manufacturing Update BY CHAD MOUTRAY, CHIEF ECONOMIST, NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF MANUFACTURERS (NAM)

February 14, 2014 – Worldwide equity markets have grappled with struggles in emerging markets in recent weeks, with some countries forced to defend their currencies by raising interest rates. Turkey, for instance, raised its key interest rate to as much as 12% to stem significant declines in its lira. Argentina, India, South Africa, and other countries have taken similar moves. While many of these nations have suggested that the Federal Reserve’s policies have contributed to their current plight, recent events have exposed larger structural weaknesses in these countries that the Federal Reserve’s quantitative easing program might have camouflaged. Realizing that these challenges might be more isolated, global stock markets have recovered mostly of late.

For manufacturers, the latest data continue to show improvements in most major economies, including emerging markets. Some measures indicated a pullback to begin the new year, with the JPMorgan Global Manufacturing PMI down slightly from 53.0 in December to 52.9 in January. Yet, the larger story is that manufacturer sentiment has increased globally for 15 straight months, and several of our largest trading partners are experiencing multiyear highs. The Markit Eurozone Manufacturing PMI, for example, reflected the fastest pace of growth since May

The measure for output continued to show modest growth, albeit at a slower pace. While Chinese economic growth has decelerated from past years, the country has shown improvements from mid-2013 and still continues to grow strongly. Meanwhile, the U.S. trade deficit narrowed in 2013 overall, but it rose somewhat in December. Spurred energy production in the United States has helped the overall trade balance, with petroleum exports up and imports down for the year. Still, one of the more frustrating storylines of 2013 was the sluggish growth of Cylinders & PTOs Pumps & Motors manufactured goods exports, up just 2.4% for the year. This was below the 5.7% pace of 2013, and the disappointing increase remained true even with overall improvements in the global economy. Exports of manufactured products to South America and Europe were down 2.0% and 0.1%, respectively, with an easing in Valves the growth rate of exports to our two largest Parts trading partners—Canada (0.7%) and Mexico (5.1%). One of the brighter spots was China— defying conventional wisdom—with U.S.manufactured goods exports up 18.4% in 2013. Automated Drilling Pipe Handler

MOVES PRECISELY DUE TO ELECTRO-HYDRAULIC CONTROLS

D

BY BRAD SMITH, DELTA COMPUTER SYSTEMS, INC. rilling rigs are essentially hoisting machines that raise and lower drill pipes into wellbores that can be four miles or more in depth. A large motor (top drive) rotates these drill pipes to drill the well. While industry has made great strides in behavioral-based safety, oil rigs can be dangerous places to work. Mechanization and automation are keys to achieving the next level of safety and productivity. Though many rig functions are now performed by machinery, the handling of drill pipes hasn’t changed much over the years and continues to be a manual, laborintensive process. Derrick hands, as these workers are called, manipulate

the top of 90 ft.-long drill pipe assemblies (called “stands”) while a floor hand pushes that same 90 ft. pendulum to and from well center. The derrick hands’ workstation—80 ft. above the rig floor—is called a diving board. The workers wear fall-arrest harnesses to keep them safe, but they still rely on an escape mechanism called a “Geronimo line” when they need to get to the ground in an emergency. The 90-ft. pipe stands are composed of three 30-foot sections, with each section weighing 5,000 pounds or more. The drilling industry has been looking for a robotic pipe-handling system that can keep humans out of harm’s way and also speed up the pipe-handling process.

One company offering an automated solution is Weatherford International, one of the largest international oil and natural gas service companies. The company provides products and services for drilling, evaluation, completion, production, and intervention of oil and natural gas wells. Weatherford has developed an advanced pipe-handling solution called the “Iron Derrickman.” In order for an automated solution to work, the system needs to ensure precise control of the positioning of the arms that move the pipe. Fig. 1 shows Weatherford’s pipe-handling robot. The hydraulically actuated machine hangs below the diving board on a drilling rig, clamps on a pipe stand, and lifts it just above the drill floor. The robot arm also clamps the pipe near its top to stabilize it as the arm moves. “When handling pipe, we need to drive the machine to precise coordinates for each axis of motion,” said Jim Jones, business unit manager for Weatherford’s Iron Derrickman product. The motion axes are slew (rotation), extension, scoping up and down, and tilt, which translates into X and Y coordinates. “In order to expedite the pipe-handling process, the slew, extend, and scoping axes are moved simultaneously,” he added. To control the hydraulically powered motion precisely, the RMC150 eight-axis electro-hydraulic motion controller (Fig. 2), manufactured by Delta Computer Systems of Battle Ground, Wash., was selected. Weatherford engineers had past experience with Delta controllers, plus the local hydraulics distributor could provide all the solution elements quickly. “The processing capacity of Delta is well beyond what we need today,” said Jones, “so we have horsepower headroom to add new capabilities to our system.” The Weatherford Iron Derrickman system uses a PLC that tells the motion controller which coordinates to go to, and then the RMC150 moves the axes to implement the command, which is typically to move a stand from one place to another along a precise trajectory. The controller gets its position feedback information from a series of linear transducers that are mounted on the hydraulic cylinders—three on the cylinders driving the motion axes, two on the clamping device that grips the pipe, and one encoder mounted on the spindle axis. The RMC150 provides a number of specific advantages for controlling the pipe-handling robot. Its ability to handle SSI inputs (“SSI” is a highspeed, highly reliable synchronous serial interface standard) permitted the use of robust high-resolution magnetostrictive position transducers that were installed into the hydraulic cylinders. Having high-resolution position information results in precise velocity measurements, allowing machine builders such as Weatherford to take full advantage of the RMC’s advanced tuning capabilities in order to deliver smoother motion. Another feature, the Output Filter, ensures that the command signal to the valve does not contain large spikes, which could shake the handler. Although this system, like any large, multi-dimensional hydraulic system, tends to vibrate easily, the RMC150 was able to ensure precise, yet smooth motion. To achieve the linear motion in the x-y-z Cartesian coordinates required for traversing the pipe along the “alley” and then into the “fingers,” the RMC150 provides synchronized curvilinear motion profiles, or

Not only does the RMC need to be able to determine the axes’ target positions given the required Cartesian coordinates (inverse kinematics), it also needs to ascertain the handler’s target position given the current positions of the axes (forward kinematics) at all times, including when the system starts after a shutdown. mable relationship based on the position of the master.) The motion of the slave axis can be non-linear, which is the case in the Weatherford system, where the handler arm must move each pipe stand in different directions to get it from the well head to its storage place and vice-versa. To set up the camming operation, the RMC allows the developer to program a virtual master axis that moves between target coordinates. Then, as the virtual axis is commanded to move the handler from the well head into the alleyway and into the fingers, the RMC seamlessly transitions between entire sets of motion profiles. The operator can easily change the handling speed by just adjusting the velocity of the virtual axis. In order to provide a scalable solution, Weatherford needed a motion controller that could easily be adapted to various-sized handling systems. This was achieved by creating variables in the RMCTools software for storing the system measurements. The RMC uses these to dynamically create the motion profiles. By setting these variables, the RMC can be adapted to any size pipe-handling system in a matter of seconds. The RMCTools software includes a Curve Tool for visually and numerically validating and/or modifying the curves. “Our practical experience indicates that we can now trip at the rate of 30 stands/ hr.,” said Jones. “The machine is capable of motions that would exceed 40 stands/hr. This is significantly faster than the old manual method, and much, much safer.”

ince we are surrounded by vast, unlimited volumes of atmospheric air, it is easy to think that the compressed air in your plant piping is free. But if you closely compare the power you put into the air compressor at one end to what little power you get out at the other, the story is not so good. Further, it is very common to have inefficiencies creep in and rob you of the small amount of remaining energy that makes it to your air tool.

TYPICAL COMPRESSOR PERFORMANCE Compressed air systems are one of the least efficient ways to transfer energy to a mechanical device. At 100 psi, it takes between 16 and 22 kilowatts (kW) of power to produce 100 cubic feet per minute (cfm) of flow, depending on the type of air compressor used. This rating is called “specific power” and is in units of kW per 100 cfm. An air motor producing one horsepower (hp) of power from its shaft consumes about 30 cfm. Therefore, it takes about 7 to 8 hp of power input to the air compressor package to produce about 1 hp of shaft power at the tool. If the air motor is run full time through a two-shift, five-day-perweek operating schedule totaling 4,160 hours per year, the total electrical cost at $0.10 per kWh would be about $2,330 per year. If, instead, the same mechanical load is driven with a direct drive electric motor, the electrical cost would be $390 per year. In all, a compressed air system like this would deliver about 10 to 15% of its original power input to the load. Not a very impressive number, especially when you realize the system just described is a theoretical lossless system. (See Fig. 1.)

SYSTEM LOSSES We all know that compressed air systems are not perfect. The air compressors that produce the air do not always run in the best manner possible due to inherent inefficiencies at part loads. Often, due to the way the compressors are controlled, the actual specific power will be two or three times that of the lossless system, doubling or tripling the cost per unit. Air filters and piping friction losses cause pressure differential, which consumes more power, with the compressor input power requirement going up 5% for every 10 psi in pressure differential it has to overcome. Air dryers also consume power; refrigerated dryers have small motors inside that add to the electrical costs, and if desiccant dryers are used,

between 15 and 20% or more of the compressed air produced can be consumed by air dryer purge, never getting to the final destination. And leakage and wasted energy due to excessive system pressures further rob the system of its efficiency. Studies show that typical systems waste about 50% of all the compressed air produced. (See Fig. 2.) Based on these items, the overall compressed air system efficiency “wire-to-work” can fall to levels substantially lower than the 10 to 15% previously quoted for a lossless system. It is not uncommon to find that less than 3% of the energy input to a system actually goes to producing real mechanical work.

WHAT CAN BE DONE? It is unlikely you will throw all of your compressed air tools and machines in the garbage once you become aware of the poor performance of typical compressed air systems. Air tools and equipment are too useful and, in some cases, the only practical way to operate. The key point is, however, that based on the high cost of compressed air, we should all be careful about using and abusing this expensive utility. Some keys to minimizing costs while boosting system efficiency: • Realize some uses of compressed air are inappropriate and can be done in a more efficient way using other energy sources. • Fix system leaks to reduce flow. • Lower system pressure to reduce compressor pressure. • Lower system pressure to reduce artificial demand. • Use efficient cycling or dew point controlled dryers. • Minimize wasteful condensate drainage at compressors, dryers, and filters by using airless drains. • Be mindful of filter pressure differential, change elements regularly, or design filtration for lower pressure. • Ensure system piping differentials are low by using adequately sized compressed air piping. • Choose an efficient air compressor that uses efficient controls, such as variable speed drive or load/unload with a large storage receiver. • Ensure the air compressor is well maintained so it keeps running at top performance throughout its life. • Realize air compressors produce mostly heat. If you can use the heat to displace building heat or input to a process to reduce other energy input, you can boost total system efficiency substantially.

VARIABLE SPEED PUMP DRIVES FOR INDUSTRIAL MACHINERY_SYSTEM CONSIDERATIONS

D

espite ominous predictions in the ‘80s and ‘90s, hydraulics being completely replaced by electrical drives did not occur, and fluid power still plays an important role in modern drive technology. Moreover, it is impossible to imagine many fields of industry working without hydraulic drives. The enormous power density makes hydraulic drives irreplaceable when large forces and high torques are required. Over the last 30 years, “traditional” hydraulics has evolved into electro-hydraulics, where the use of electronics and closed-loop controls has become an industrial standard. For years it was common to depict hydraulics as “strong, but stupid.” Today this reputation no longer exists; hydraulics is not only strong, but also “intelligent.” Modern fluid power drives are perfect examples of integrated mechatronic devices. Ongoing competition with electrical drives and ever-increasing requirements of performance and energy efficiency have led the hydraulic drive industry to new and more advanced system solutions. The power control of electro-hydraulic drives typically uses resistive or volumetric control. In resistive control, the system is controlled by a valve, usually a proportional device, to throttle oil flow delivered from a power-supply source. In volumetric control, flow is controlled by adjusting the displacement of a pump or by directly changing the drive speed of a fixed or variable displacement pump. Resistive control possesses excellent dynamic characteristics, however it exhibits poor energy efficiency. Significant power losses occur due to dissipation in the control valve. This is, in effect, hydraulic resistance.

Rising costs of energy and increased awareness of environment issues has resulted in new trends in drive systems. Over the last two decades, improving electro-hydraulic efficiency was a main goal of many companies and research institutes. Given advances in drive technology and closed-loop control, the resistive throttling method is being replaced more often by more efficient volumetric control using speed variable pump systems. Reducing throttling losses lowers the amount of heat transferred to the oil and oil reservoir. Lower heat generation allows for a smaller-capacity cooling system and lower parasitic power needed to maintain optimum oil temperature. Using Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) with hydraulic power units can also lower average noise emissions, as the pump speed is reduced during partial-load operations, such as pressure holding or idling. The average sound level can be lowered by as much as 10-20 dB(A), improving environmental working conditions. The combination of advanced electric-drive technology and hydraulics opens a new chapter in electro-hydraulic drive systems. Machine builders can now benefit from the traditional

hydraulic characteristics of robustness and power density, and additionally benefit from the well-known advantages of electrical drives: inherent drive “intelligence” and ease of integration with factory automation systems. This changing landscape of hydraulic drives pushes fluid power specialists to quickly adapt to using variable speed pump drives. For many engineers, this may not be an easy step. Optimum utilization of variable speed pump drives requires, in many cases, additional system design considerations and modifications to a hydraulic system design. Fluid power engineers need to understand the distinctive features of VFDs and the requirements of the production process being driven. This will define the critical points for the electric and hydraulic elements. The goal of the system is to meet the requirements of dynamics and accuracy, but also keep the focus on overall energy efficiency. When applying a VFD-driven pump, using a conventional induction motor or a permanent magnet servomotor (PMM), the dynamic behavior will differ from a traditional system using a constant speed pump drive and throttling control valve.

Systems using variable speed pump drives can use a number of different design solutions. The selection of the design solution depends on a number of factors. The type of hydraulic circuit, the required response times and accuracy, the power required, and other factors all come into play when deciding the best drive and circuit design. Dynamic performance and power requirements determine the choice of the motor. For applications requiring the fastest response times and highest accuracies, a PMM may be the best selection. Today this technology is used extensively in plastic injection-molding machines. These drive systems offer extremely high performance and have high productivity rates. Due to their high power density and low drive inertia, PMMs have the highest acceleration capabilities. These high dynamics allow complex machine control tasks, such as direct force, speed, and cylinder position control, to be realized without proportional valves. The main limitation when using PMMs is maximum continuous output power, typically less than 60kW. Power units with higher output power, greater than 60kW, may require multiple PMMpump groups. Standard asynchronous induction motors driven with VFDs can be used in higher-power applications, where direct control of high dynamic axes is not required. Using standard induction motors with VFDs, operating in a sensorless vector control mode (no separate motor feedback device required) results in a cost-effective system. However, the system designer should be aware of the limitations of direct control using these drives. The system response times can be long as a result of the high inertia of the induction motor. Variable speed pump drives using standard induction motors with VFDs are used today in the woodworking industry, on press applications, in plastics machinery, heavy industry applications, and machining tool applications where the control task is typically regulating system pressure or flow. The motor size and drive should be selected based on the pressure-flow-time cycle (p/Q profile) for the application machine. In practice, motors on standard HPUs are often sized on “corner power,” calculated from the maximum pump pressure and flow, and duty cycle is commonly not taken into account. This results in the installation of excess motor HP. If partial load comprises a significant portion of the machine cycle, the excess motor power can be significant. Sizing PMMs for variable speed pump drives should follow methods commonly used in electro-mechanical actuator drives: calculating the root mean square (RMS) value based on the load torque and average drive speed. Once a pump size is determined, the motor torque and speed are calculated from the required pump pressure and flow. Additionally, the dynamic torque requirements for accelerating and decelerating the motor’s rotor and pump inertia need to be added. These calculated values are used to select the proper size drive and motor. Drive siz

ing and system optimization can be done using specialized tools, such as Bosch Rexroth’s SytronixSize, which allows analyzing p/Q profiles and motor load factors. For a more complex analysis, a numerical simulation can be used to model the system. Dynamic simulations help by providing more insight to the system dynamics, such as pressurization dynamics, and to investigate

interactions between the drive and the hydraulic system. Analysis of the performance of closedloop controls can be done, as well. These dynamic simulations can be carried out using software that includes drive and hydraulics model libraries. Simulation tools, such as Bosch Rexroth’s Simster 3, ITI SimulationX, or MATLAB/Simulink Simscape can be used for these requirements.

WHEN SELECTING THE PUMP FOR VARIABLE SPEED OPERATION, SEVERAL IMPORTANT FACTORS MUST BE CONSIDERED:

• Is the pump construction suitable for variable speed operation? • What are the minimum and maximum allowed RPM for the pump? • Can the pump be used bi-directionally, and if so, are there any pressure and speed limitations?

WHEN SELECTING THE PUMP FOR VARIABLE SPEED OPERATION, SEVERAL IMPORTANT FACTORS MUST BE CONSIDERED:

• Is the pump suitable for start and stop operation? • What is the maximum operating pressure allowed for the pump, and does pressure affect the maximum allowable pump speed? • What fluid will be used in the system, and does it limit the pump’s pressure and speed based on viscosity and pump lubrication? • What is the mechanical and volumetric efficiency of the pump at the design operating points? • What are pump acoustic noise level considerations, based on expected speed, pressure, and displacement? • What will the pressure and flow pulsations be over the range of operating speeds? • Is the hydraulic circuit of open or closed type?

Improper pump selection or operation outside allowed conditions can result in premature pump failure or suboptimal control performance. Pumps used with speed variable drives typically are internal gear or piston pumps. In some cases, properly selected vane pumps may also be used. Internal gear pumps are characterized by high efficiency, low flow ripple, low mechanical inertia, and high-pressure capability. Due to these characteristics, they are widely used with PMMs on injection-molding machines. The limitations are fixed displacement and limits on the mini-

mum drive speed during pressure-holding operation. Axial piston pumps, either fixed or variable displacement design, have desired properties of high efficiency at low speed, making them ideal for pressure-holding operation. Using a variable displacement pump allows the possibility to lower the motor torque during pressure holding in the machine cycle. This can result in higher system efficiency, since the motor and pump can operate under more desirable operating conditions. The pump displacement control can react a magnitude or more faster than the motor speed control. This is of greater value when used with higher HP drive motors. It is expected that speed variable pump drives will replace an increasing number of standard motors in hydraulic power units in the future. This change is already utilized by many plastic machinery OEMs and is quickly expanding in press applications. Understanding the principles of variable speed drives and the interaction between hydraulics and electric drives will be key to future fluid power engineering.

CHAPTER 49/50 MEMBERS AND GUESTS ATTEND 2014 IFPS SPRING MEETING WELCOME RECEPTION Chapter 49/50 members are very involved in youth activities, and this endeavor was ever-so evident during its January 2014 chapter meeting at the Embassy Suites, Orlando, Fla. Boy Scouts from Troop 223, Windermere, Fla., opened the meeting by presenting colors, reciting the Scout oath, and leading meeting attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance. The Scouts recently participated in the Hydraulics and Pneumatics Merit Badge Experimental Program. They stated the program was a lot of fun, very educational, and opened their eyes to observing fluid power applications in their everyday lives. In addition to the Boy Scouts, representatives from FIRST Robotics team Exploding Bacon entertained attendees with their 2013 FIRST robot during the reception and gave an in-depth presentation during the meeting. Chapter 49/50 presented a check to assist the Exploding Bacon team for the 2014 FIRST Robotics Competition.

FIRST® Aerial AssistSM 2014 Robotics Game Unveiled INVENTOR AND FIRST® FOUNDER Dean Kamen launched the 2014 FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC®) season with the kickoff of a new robotics game called Aerial AssistSM before a crowd of 400 people at Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester, N.H., hometown of FIRST® headquarters. Nearly 70,000 high school students on more than 2,700 teams in 92 cities around the globe joined the 2014 Kickoff via live NASA-TV broadcast and webcast. The 2014 game is played by two Alliances of three teams each. Alliances compete by trying to score as many balls in goals as possible during a two-minute and 30-second match. Additional points are earned by robots working together to score goals, and by throwing and catching balls over a truss suspended just over five feet above the floor as they move the ball down the field. “The FIRST Robotics Competition develops 21st century thinkers, 21st century work-

ers, and people who will be able to lead in the innovation economy,” remarked Maggie Hassan, New Hampshire Governor, before directly addressing the student participants in the audience at Southern New Hampshire University. “We know that our competitiveness as a state, and as a country in this global economy, is going to depend on how well you all can develop as the future problem solvers we need, and the skills you learn in this competition are critical to our success moving forward.” At the Kickoff, FRC teams were shown the playing field and received a kit of parts made up of motors, batteries, a control system, a PC, and a mix of automation components— and only limited instructions. Working with adult mentors, students have six weeks to design, build, program, and test their robots to meet the season’s engineering challenge. Once these young inventors build a robot,

their teams will participate in one or more of the 98 regional and district competitions that measure the effectiveness of each robot, the power of collaboration, and the determination of students. “I love FIRST. It’s about much more than cultivating your interests in science, technology, engineering, and math,” said Senator for New Hampshire Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.). “It’s also about developing important skills in leadership and teamwork. This experience highlights what you will do in your careers,” said John M. Grunsfeld, associate administrator for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA headquarters. “Experience in this competition is similar in many ways to how we design, build, and test NASA robots.”

FIRST LEGO League Teams Assist Tornado-Devastated Area in Illinois

Several members from the Rockford Christian School (RCS)-based FIRST LEGO League (FLL) teams headed to storm-ravaged Washington, Ill., to help families affected by tornadoes that hit the area in late November 2013. Julie Rohl, who has been coaching various FIRST teams for the past seven years, made the trip to the area with six FLL members and said it was an emotional eye-opener, as well as a learning experience. Because house numbers were missing, team members had to resort to Google maps to locate the lots on which they were to volunteer. The team’s main job during the two-day project was to sort through debris and collect usable items, which they put aside for pick up by FEMA and other community agencies. The FLL team members worked from dawn until dusk, witnessing some unusual and sad sights: a mangled snow blower in a treetop; empty hangers in a closet still standing among the wreckage; and pieces of a garage door strewn about the area. In their search, they also found many personal items. Working with the local library, the FLL team members were able to post photos on Facebook, where grateful family members retrieved them. Team members spoke with homeowners who wanted to share stories of how they had survived the treacherous weather. In an effort to understand the storm’s impact on the surrounding community, FLL

team members visited the Red Cross, the Multi-Agency Resource Center (MARC), insurance catastrophe trailer, and FEMA. They also interacted with therapy dogs brought in to calm victims and support volunteers. “FIRST is an extension of the classroom; it’s a place where students can become life-long learners,” said Rohl. “We learned that science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) can extend far beyond the classroom and into the backyards of those around us. And that we can use our STEM skills to help others!”

From Robotics to the Jet Dragster Race Track At the age of 11, Moriah Counts dreamed of designing military planes and bonded with her father, a software engineer, over household maintenance projects. This passion led her to join a FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team in her hometown of Columbia, Md., during her junior year of high school. Today, Moriah is a senior pursuing a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla. On her FRC team, Moriah was primarily focused on design, but also seized the opportunity to bounce around from group to group, learning as much as possible about programming, electronics, and production. This time proved well spent when she found herself interning with the Embry-Riddle Larsen Motorsports Jet Racing Team. They thought I was one of the most techsavvy interns they ever had,” explained Moriah. “Because of FIRST, I already know how to construct most things, and I already knew how to use the tools, which was half the battle.” Moriah is now devoting her time to graduate-level research projects working with the Air Force, NASA, Boeing, and Gulfstream on aero-elastic activity, jet-impulse actuators, and composite materials. Following her graduation from Embry-Riddle in Spring 2014, Moriah has already secured a position at Bell Helicopter as a mechanical systems engineer.

Clippard, III as chairman of the board; Robert L. Clippard as vice chairman of the board; and John Campbell as president, reporting to the board. EATON PROVIDES CLOSED CIRCUIT PISTON PRODUCTS ‰ Eaton announced a contract with a mowing manufacturer to supply closed circuit piston products for lightweight fairway motors. The pumps will provide additional operational control, fuel efficiency, and reduced maintenance without additional costs. The new mower, which will be used by golf courses to groom fairways, is one of the first to feature a high level of cruise control for the operator whether cutting or driving. The closed circuit piston pumps eliminate the need to mechanically link the accelerator to the pump and reduce the number of parts on the mower. Ë The controls, suitable for lightweight or heavy-duty excavators, can adjust volume flows for all functions if the pump comes to its displacement limits. This is achieved through targeted prioritizing. The programmable logic valve control, PLVC constantly collects data from the joystick, pump, and combustion engine, and calculates the priority of functions requested by the excavator’s driver. What is Power2Move? by Eric Lanke, CEO NFPA Like almost everyone else I know, I had never heard of fluid power before. When I came on board as the CEO of the National Fluid Power Association (NFPA), I was coming from an organization that managed professional medical societies. I knew a lot about running an association. But fluid power? Not so much. Now it’s six years later.* Needless to say, I’ve learned a lot about fluid power and have come to understand this industry in ways most people do not. As I reflect on this journey, two important concepts really stand out. First, there is a lot worth knowing about fluid power. Far from being the stagnant and outdated caricature some people like to paint, hydraulics and pneumatics represent foundational technologies that our modern society absolutely depends on. That hasn’t changed in a hundred years and isn’t going to change anytime soon. In the last ten years, there has been a literal renaissance going on within our industry. By integrating with other technologies, and by pursuing high-level research and development, fluid power is not only solidifying its hold on those foundational applications, it is expanding into ever-increasing frontiers. That’s the first concept I’ve come to understand. What’s the second? Still, nobody knows this.

Suppose you’re an engineer or technician working for a company that builds machines that rely on fluid power components or systems. Or perhaps you’re an owner or operator of one of those machines, someone who depends on fluid power to perform tasks critical to your livelihood. Or suppose you’re an engineer responsible for design solutions across a wider spectrum, constantly looking for new ways of solving old problems. Or perhaps you’re a member of our technically literate public, someone just curious about new technologies and novel ways of doing things. If any of these descriptions fit you, then you should know more about the changes going on in the fluid power industry. And, more importantly, we want you to have a stake in the conversation that’s driving those changes forward. That, in a nutshell, is why we created Power2Move. It’s a blog where we will share information that reflects what’s new and exciting about hydraulics, pneumatics, and the industry behind them. And it’s a place where we hope to connect with the broad community of fluid power users and those increasingly reliant on our technology. he International Fluid Power Society (IFPS) has dedicated June 19 as “Fluid Power Professionals' Day” - a day of recognition for all of us who work in the fluid power field! It has been said that fluid power is a “hidden giant” because it is so common in every aspect of our day-to-day existence that we have simply overlooked the obvious. There is not a vehicle, ship, plane, or train that can operate without fluid power. There is no consumer item, no electronic gadget, and no morsel of food we grow that can exist in enough quantity at a cost we can afford without the use of fluid power and our efforts. From the ancient waterwheels of an emerging agrarian economy through the renaissance of industrial revolution to the automation and information technology age of today, we have worked to utilize, maintain, improve, and advance this all-encompassing technology. These efforts have

improved productivity, ensured safety, and provided critical services that improve the quality of all of our lives. THANK YOU!

WHY JUNE 19TH? A little bit of history behind the date is interesting. Blaise Pascal—a French mathematician, inventor, writer, and physicist—was born on this day clear back in 1623. His work in hydrodynamics and hydrostatics, including the invention of the hydraulic press, paved the way for all future innovations. He was also instrumental in experiments in pneumatics that examined the behavior of air in a vacuum and validated the work of the man who invented the barometer, Evangelista Torricelli. Because of Blaise Pascal and his work, the scientific foundation of thermodynamics and fluid power was set to build upon for those who followed.

PROFILE DATA John Juhasz, CFPS, CFPECS, is territory manager at Kraft Fluid Systems. His resume includes time at John Deere, Bobcat, Cummins, and Buckeye Hydraulics before joining Kraft Fluid Systems in 2005. He covers lower Michigan, northwest Ohio, and northern Indiana working with OEM customers. He currently resides in Montpelier, Ohio, with his wife and four daughters. Mr. Juhasz is a member of the IFPS 2014 Board of Directors.

‰ WHEN AND WHERE DID YOUR CAREER IN FLUID POWER BEGIN?

My career started when I was 8-9 years old repairing equipment on our family farm. It led to heavily participating in the Agricultural Mechanics contests in FFA (Future Farmers of America) in high school, then a degree in Fluid Power from Ohio State ATI in Wooster. ‰ WHAT IS THE MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT IN YOUR FLUID POWER CAREER, AND WHAT DID IT TEACH YOU?

In the early 2000s, I was called on a service call to discover a high-pressure hydraulic system that was plumbed partially with PVC water pipe. Mortified, I instructed the maintenance techs at that facility to keep the machine shut down until proper rated plumbing was installed. It made an impression on me that we take things for granted sometimes and that not everyone exposed to fluid power is “savvy” about fluid power. ‰ WHAT DO YOU FEEL IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ACHIEVEMENT IN THE FLUID POWER INDUSTRY?

In a roundabout way, the fact that fluid power is so obscure is testament to our industry’s utmost utility. ‰ HOW AND WHY DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN THE IFPS?

Having held certifications for close to 20 years through IFPS, I felt that “giving back” or “paying forward” was certainly appropriate. When Bob Kraft (founder of Kraft Fluid Systems and former IFPS president) suggested to me that I get involved, it was a wake-up call reminiscent of “Why didn’t I think of that sooner?”

‰ WHY DO YOU FEEL THE IFPS IS IMPORTANT?

A couple of reasons. First, the certification/ training is a “common core” that builds professionalism in the industry. Second, maintaining a “noise level” to stay on the radar of young professionals and students, especially those interested in technology, maintains the influx of youth and subsequent generations into fluid power. ‰ WHERE DO YOU SEE THE FLUID POWER INDUSTRY HEADING IN THE NEXT 10 YEARS?

The easy answer would be more electronic controls, but I think that bell curve has already hit the 80/20 range and leveled off. The bubble won’t burst, but it’s not going to continue growing exponentially as it has the past 10 years. The real elephant in the room is the number of seasoned and experienced professionals that will retire in the next decade, taking with them a wealth of experience and knowledge. ‰ WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE HOBBIES AND INTERESTS?

Cooking, gardening, and hunting. Specifically, I grow corn for size and have won several competitions for tall stalks and large ears (stalks 21+ feet tall and ears over 16" long).

When I was in high school, I couldn’t decide if I wanted to be a chef or a heavy equipment mechanic. I toured and visited several culinary academies, as well as several diesel and equipment programs. ith worker safety as a chief concern, forest owners across the globe are constantly looking for methods to protect their employees from dangerous working conditions while increasing harvest yields. In the forestry industry, the monumental physical challenges brought on by steep terrain makes safety concerns even more urgent. On flat ground, forestry professionals typically rely on harvesting machines to reduce safety risks. On steep hills, however, traditional equipment is not suitable due to lack of stability; sharp angles create issues with traction control and engine and hydraulic oil levels, making traditional machinery a dangerous solution.

Safer, More Efficient Equipment To enhance safety for forestry professionals, the machine needed to function safely on extreme angles with heavier construction and different boom geometry. The new machine also had to include complex logic control and sensors for self-monitoring, ensuring the machine would stay in place regardless of conditions. To achieve these goals, the hydraulic system needed a complete redesign to manage the winch system and handle the sharp angles of the boom, which holds the felling head­—a key portion of the cutting operation. The development was a totally new concept for Trinder, so without any points of comparison for the machine, Trinder invented and built a new harvester by disassembling and rebuilding the flat ground harvester with heavier construction. Working with distributor Fluid Power Solutions, Eaton delivered a complete control solution package and helped Trinder’s programmer overcome circuit design issues. In addition to a seven-inch Moeller color touch screen, Eaton recommended three controllers, directional control

valves, hoses and fittings, and slip-in and screw-in cartridge valves for hydraulic control­—all of which ensure precise control even under the toughest conditions.

A Safe Solution for Tree Harvesting in Rough Terrain The control system design faced two big challenges. First, the winch needed to be controlled automatically to allow the operator to concentrate on driving the felling machine. Second, the design had to achieve a high standard of safety, giving the operator the confidence to operate the machine on the steepest of slopes with differing ground conditions. Eaton’s control solution allows the winch and tracks to work in unison with operators, who have the ability to change modes for different terrain and maneuvers by simply pressing one of three buttons conveniently located on one of the joysticks. The new machine features the option of using the boom to stabilize the machine. The software program embeds the monitoring of all electrical hardware components to ensure that everything is working correctly. There is also a blade on the machine that doubles as a safety device and is automatically driven into the ground to provide stability in case of a power failure. The harvester is the first of its kind in New Zealand, and forest owners in the country are already stipulating that a winch-assisted machine will be used on slopes over a certain angle. This is likely to become an industry-wide standard. Though it will take years to fully determine how the ClimbMAX machine is helping reduce forestry accidents, its use has already helped minimize the number of lumberjacks who have to work on steep slopes, increasing safety by reducing the potential for accidents.

The cylinder will extend, dwell, and then retract after a period of time for both answers. The operator will push the left valve directing air to the shuttle valve and to the pilot-operated air valve. When the valve shifts, it directs air to the cylinder and also to both pilot lines. Air will go to the left pilot line, through the shuttle valve, and hold the main valve energized after the operator lets go of the push-button valve. Air also goes to the right pilot line, through the flow control, and fills the air tank. When the pressure gets close to the system pressure on the right end
