Propelling Fluid Power into the Future through Human Connection

IN REGARDS TO user engagement and social media, the fluid power industry is moving at a slower pace than other highly reputable industries.

My point of view, however, is that the frontrunners of any industry should work toward understanding their audience and connecting with them through a variety of platforms, including social media and websites. Prioritizing digital property not only benefits a single organization, but also encourages growth and innovation for the entire field. And an industry-wide push towards prioritizing human connection via social media benefits everyone.

As an industry, we should look to examples such as the Fluid Power Journal and follow their lead in storytelling and connection-building. Storytelling is foundational to our humanity. Our legacies, lives and lessons are passed down by word-of-mouth, across cultures spanning generations. Every day we utilize stories in many ways – to recount our day, share our histories, entertain each other, and, I think most importantly, connect with other human beings.

The most successful businesses are those that can utilize storytelling to create a human connection. The first and most important rule? Simply, refrain from trying to sell, sell, sell. Resist placing focus on talking about your products or technology as the bulk of your interaction. In many regards, content marketing is like a first date. If you only talk about yourself, there won’t be a second one.

So the question becomes: What do I talk about? Placing the spotlight on individuals within your own organization is

an amazing place to begin. Fluid power is a workhorse of the U.S. economy – a cross-cutting technology of choice for dozens of industries and hundreds of applications. We’re diverse and multifaceted, and we keep America operating.

Showcasing the individuals who play a key role in the day-to-day business happenings will go a long way for increasing your own brand recognition, as well as that of the fluid power industry itself.

Another great topic? Talk about the impact your organization has on the community and give the everyday Jack & Jill an understanding of how we help move this nation. There are hundreds of other ways to create relevant content, some of which will and should deal with your individual product lines and services.

Creating a fine balance is what will propel yourself and our industry forward.

Change can be difficult and present challenges, such as drawing a genuinely engaged audience, but it is time for fluid power to embrace social media and the digital movement. For years I’ve heard many industry professionals say, “Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. are just not for our industry.” This line of thinking is now out of date. Build your organization’s presence on social media platforms to better engage with the consumer of today (and tomorrow). We all have different experiences, assets, and capabilities.

Use social media to convey that! Individually and collectively, it’s time for us as an industry to tell those stories, better engage with our customers, and propel ourselves forward. 

Ink Mixing Machine Speed Problems

A LARGE OEM ink manufacturer of various printer inks had a speed problem on a 400-gal ink mixing machine after we upgraded the proportional valve control system. We observed the speeds of both mixer blades and spoke to a longtime operator of the machine on how fast the normal blades rotated before designing the new control system.

The slow speed normally runs at 24 RPM, while the high speed would run at 900 RPM. The existing hydraulic power unit had a new pressure compensated piston pump and all else looked in good condition. The operator said the hydraulics were working well set at 1,000 PSI and only the controls needed to be replaced.

We were also told to build in maximum speed limits of each blade circuit to those shown on the drawings.

The unit was up and running fine when we left the job site, but a few weeks later we got a call that the mixer had a problem.

The operator was mixing a thicker ink formula that required upping the highspeed mixer blade to 1,000 RPM, but after he made the adjustment, the slow speed blade would drop down to 18 to 19 RPM when he needed the 24 RPM speed. When we arrived, we found that when the speed of either one of the blades was increased higher than the normal speed, the other blade would slow down. The hydraulic unit was reading 1,000 PSI as we found it earlier. We checked the case drain flow of the pump and it did not indicate that the pump was failing.

The pressure compensated flow control should only allow a fixed rate of oil to pass regardless of the accumulator’s outlet oil pressure. The hydrostat inside the PC flow control was stuck in the open position rendering the flow control as a normal orifice that changes flow if the inlet or outlet pressure changes.

Hydraulic Proportional Valve Advancements

THERE HAVE BEEN a lot of changes and advancements throughout the years with hydraulic directional valves. The most basic directional valve shifts an actuator from point to point at fixed speed with no acceleration control. However, newer valve technology can control accurate positioning, velocity, acceleration, deceleration, and force. The most advanced control valves have on-board electronics, which can be configured using software developed by the manufacturer to control and program a variety of parameters.

Starting with the basics, many original hydraulic systems controlling the direction and speed of hydraulic actuators simply used on/off control and manually adjustable flow control valves. This setup requires an electrical signal,

typically 110VAC or 24VDC, applied to a solenoid which electromagnetically shifts a spool to a fully open position. For speed control, the engineer would need to use manually set flow controls.

The accuracy of these flow controls is low, and this type of system didn’t address acceleration and deceleration of an actuator. The accuracy of flow controls did, however, improve with the development of pressure compensated flow controls that addressed speed changes caused by varying loads.

The next generation of direction and flow control used the concept of varying the electrical signal to a solenoid valve. A variable current was applied through a valve coil to shift a spool against an opposing spring. The more current

present, the stronger the shifting force and more spool travel. This allowed for flow control and directional control in the same valve. Valves using a variable control signal became known as proportional directional valves.

Varying current can be achieved by using a constant 24VDC and variable resistor. However, a better method of doing this is to use a series of very fast 24VDC pulses (1 kHz typical) to the coil.

The longer the on-time of the pulses, the higher the average voltage and current to the valve.

Varying the pulse on-time voltage can be used to shift the spool to variable positions, therefore varying flow through the valve. This concept is called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) and is more energy-efficient and creates less heat than using a constant 24VDC signal and resistor.

PWM technology was originally utilized with a separate amplifier card. However, the more modern versions of this include amplifier electronics built into the valve itself. The amplifiers in both versions of these valves typically use a variable 0 to 10 volt, or 4 to 20 mA input signal to drive the PWM 24VDC signal to the valve.

These signals are varied throughout their range creating variable flow and directional control from one valve. No need for line mounted flow control valves. This also allows for acceleration

and deceleration of the actuator by choosing how fast the signal is ramped.

The latest in proportional valve technology takes the same technology of standard on-board electronic proportional valves to a valve with electronics that are on-board and configurable.

Eaton AxisPro™ valves offer different levels of technology utilizing their Pro-FX 2.0 software to upload control parameters directly to the valve.

accept 0 to 10-volt signals or 4 to 20 mA signals, as well as other control signals simply by selecting the parameter in the software. This reduces inventory and lead times. There are also configurable options to control drive position, drive speed, and drive force control.

More complex versions of the Eaton AxisPro valves include CAN bus communication to reduce wiring and improve diagnostic options.

There are also versions that have pressure sensors in all four ports and temperature options available as well. These sensors can be used for both control functions and/or diagnostics.

Even though technological advancements have been made through the years, design engineers nevertheless still have the need for the older more basic technology. Can the orientation of porting be changed in the field on vane pumps?

Yes! Porting can be changed on a wide variety of vane pumps fairly easily. The vane units use a cartridge kit that is assembled then installed into the unit. So, the inlet and outlet body do not have to be fully disassembled to change porting. To start you will need to loosen the bolts holding the unit together. Before you loosen the last bolt use one hand to lightly push down on the cover holding it in place. You will now want to loosen the last bolt. You can either fully remove the bolts or slide them back far enough to clear where the bodies meet. You need to do this so they do not interfere when turning the housing. This will give you leverage if the housing is stubborn to move. Once the porting has been changed the bolts can be reinstalled and torque down. For proper torque specs check with the pumps manufacturer or distributor for that specific unit.

How can I change rotation on my low speed, high torque motor?

Rotation can be changed on the majority of hydraulic motors by swapping the inlet and outlet ports. If your inlet port for the motor is the 'A' port and the shaft is spinning right handed (viewed from the shaft end of course) then you will want to swap the hoses so the inlet port is now the 'B' port. Now your shaft rotation is left handed. If you are not sure the motor is bi-rotational then please check with us. We will be happy to help you identify your motor with step-by-step directions.

If my coil fails, do I need to replace the entire valve?

No! D05 and D03 directional valves today have a separate core tube and coil that mount to the valve body. There is a knurled knob on the end of the valve that is screwed onto the core tube. By removing the knurled knob the coil can be removed and replaced easily. On a wired housing electrical box, you will need to remove the cover plate on the valve and unscrew the wires from the terminal connection. Feed the wires through the conduit opening. When installing the new coils, you would feed it through the conduit opening and reattach to the terminal connections. Screw the knurled knob on the end of the core tube.

Can I change the pump controls on my piston pump? If so, how?

Pump controls are manufacturer specific but yes they can be changed even in the field.

Because the pumps controls are generally not manufactured into the pump housing, they are mounted to the unit during assembly. This means they can be unbolted and changed with another control that has a different function.

This is relatively easy to do and can be done at any location.

How do you adjust a pressure control?

Before adjusting the pressure control you will want to be sure you are adjusting the right control. If the assembly has more than one pressure adjustment, please check with the manufacturer or any hydraulic company familiar with the

pump. They will be able to tell you which control to adjust and what the maximum adjustment is for the pump pressure. Once it has been determined which adjustment is used, it then can be adjusted by loosening any lock nut or locking wire holding the screw in place. Then with the system running, rotate the adjustment to the right to increase pump pressure or rotate the adjustment to the left to reduce pump pressure. While adjusting your control you may see oil leaking around the adjustment screw. It is normal for some controls that have an external locking nut with either a Teflon or o-ring seal.

When you have the pressure adjusted to the proper setting you can tighten any lock nuts.

Can I change rotation on my V10/20 pump onsite; if so is it easy to do?

Yes! Changing rotation on a V10 or V20 style unit is easy to do with minimal tools needed.

First thing you should do is make sure you have a clean area where you can keep everything together when the unit is taken apart. Remove the four bolts holding the unit together and then remove the cover. Next you will take off the spring and pressure plate which will leave you with the cartridge kit. On the V10 or V20 style vane pumps the only item you have to flip is the cam ring. Flip it over and mount it back onto the front body. You will now want to reinstall the pressure plate and spring. Use a little grease to hold the cover o-ring in place. Set the cover back onto the unit and push it down by hand. It is important to make sure the o-ring is seated against the cam ring. Reinstall the four bolts hand tight. Finally, you can torque down the bolts to factory spec of 35-45 lb.ft. for V10 and 75-85 lb.ft. for V20 units.

Compressor Room Ventilation

HEAT IS DEFINITELY an enemy of air compressors and dryers, especially air-cooled units, which are the most common type used in small industrial environments or shops. Overheating reduces lubrication life, prematurely ages parts, ruins motors, and reduces the reliability and quality of the compressed air supply. The higher the cooling air temperature, the higher the compressor discharge temperature. The higher the discharge temperature, the more water vapor is contained in the air, which can overwhelm air dryers and causing contamination in downstream tools and equipment, or perhaps the final product itself.

Over the years, there have been many examples of poor ventilation encountered by service technicians and compressor service providers alike.

THE FOLLOWING ARE SOME WARNING SIGNS OF OVERHEATING PROBLEMS: • When

entering the compressor room, it is difficult to get the door open due to negative pressure.

• You

are hit by a wall of heat when passing through the door.

• You

look at the compressor and it has no ventilation ductwork installed on it to remove the heat from the room.

MAGNETIC FILTRATION In coolants: Constant closed loop flow and constant particle generation from metal removal are difficult and expensive chores for standard media filtration. These factors are the leading reasons magnetic filtration is installed in coolant loops. Magnetic filtration cannot clog and has no media to load up.

In hydraulic circuits: All systems wear. Hydraulic systems have a lot of materials that can wear. The filtration system in a hydraulic circuit does a fine job of filtering out most of these materials. There is good reason to remove the steel wear particles separately. All the other wear particles usually show normal wear. Steel particles show wear that should be addressed right now. Size doesn’t matter. All steel particles from corn flake size to sub-micron all indicate some kind of wear. One magnet traps them all.

In process fluids: When viscosity and temperature allows, paint, ink, water, alcohols, solvents and other process fluids often have special requirements for iron, nickel, steel, and rust removal. IC OPTIMIZERTM IN-LINE CONTROL VALVES Inserta® Products is pleased to announce the upcoming introduction of its ic (inline control) OptimizerTM valves. They are configurable for pressure, flow, and directional control functions, and are intended to be used with hydraulic circuits containing SAE 518 flange patterns. Valve assemblies for use with SAE J518-1, size 12 flanges, in fourteen different relief configurations, are planned to start shipping in September.

The ic OptimizerTM consists of a main flanged assembly, and pilot sections that together dictate the overall function of the valve. Some of the potential functions include pilot operated, vented, and electro-proportional relief, pressure reducing, accumulator unloading, counterbalance, sequence, flow control, pilot operated check, and 2-way valves.

WHAT IN THE WORLD IS A VDT?

Ok, let me see a show of hands. How many of you are familiar with a turbocharger? Now keep the hands up so we can count. I see the NASCAR group is responding enthusiastically. Others seem to be a little hesitant. That’s ok. I will explain.

A turbocharger is a device that is typically placed in the exhaust stream of a combustion engine. It consists of two impellers that are connected by a common shaft. The exhaust gas of the engine drives one impeller, which acts as an air motor. The connecting shaft turns the other impeller, which becomes an air pump/compressor. The inlet to the motor side of the turbocharger is from the engine exhaust. The inlet to the pump/ compressor is open to atmosphere. The outlet of the motor side is directed to atmosphere while the outlet of the pump/compressor is directed to the engine air intake. (See the Turbocharger Symbol) The dense, oxygen rich air improves combustion and increases the efficiency of the engine.

This is a simplified explanation, but it serves a purpose. The point is that the otherwise wasted energy in the exhaust gas is now regenerated by driving the pump/compressor. The turbocharger functions as a displacement transformer. Relatively low pressure, oxygen depleted exhaust air is used to compress and drive oxygen rich air into the combustion chamber.

The turbocharger is a displacement device, but it is not a fixed or positive displacement device, whereas a pneumatic Fixed Displacement Transformer (FDT) is both fixed and positive. That means that the FDT has a specific flow rate (cm3 or in3) for each revolution. It also can receive or exhaust from any port, depending on the application. When placed in a circuit,

it can be used for flow augmentation, flow dividing, flow combining, or pressure intensification.

In figure 1, the circuit shows an example where a pneumatic FDT provides all four of those functions, responding to the pressure demands of the system. In the example, an FDT is used to control a compacting cylinder. Two pilot-controlled directional valves determine the flow paths in and out of the transformer.

As the cylinder begins to extend, the resistive pressure is low so neither directional valve is shifted. The transformer functions as a flow augmenter, drawing air from the atmosphere. This air joins that which is coming from the receiver. The power entering the FDT must equal the power leaving the FDT and so the increase in flow produces a reduced pressure to the cylinder. As the pressure at the cylinder rises, the bottom directional valve is piloted to cancel the flow from the atmosphere and direct only the flow from the receiver to the cylinder.

When the load pressure reaches the setting of the upper directional valve, it shifts and diverts a portion of the flow to atmosphere. This reduces the flow to the cylinder and intensifies the pressure. The FDT provides three discrete pressure and flow combinations with a constant flow from the source. The effect is that of a three-speed transmission.

When the 4-way directional valve is shifted to retract the cylinder, the cylinder will retract at high speed if there is a low-pressure requirement.

The circuit also works in an application with a pneumatic motor where there is a need for a high starting torque, then a diminishing running torque (see figure 2).

However, despite its flexibility, the FDT is limited precisely because it has a fixed displacement. It can only provide a finite number of combinations.

The Variable Displacement Transformer (VDT) is a modification of the FDT. One or more of the chambers has a variable displacement. It is this feature that makes it suitable for true power control. When combined with a variable flow source from a receiver, it provides a way to draw only the energy units needed for the actuator to do the work. It removes the need for restrictive flow and pressure controls while using the power demand to control the number of energy units drawn from the source.

The VDT can be made up of a single fixed displacement motor connected to a variable displacement motor, or two variable displacement motors that are mechanically connected. Under development are several versions where there is a single rotating group with two displacement chambers, making for a more compact and versatile product (see figure 3).

When the FDT is replaced with the VDT in the compacting circuit, we see that the VDT

makes a stepless transmission. As the load on the cylinder increases, the amount of air drawn from the atmosphere is diminished until it reaches zero. The pilot controlled directional valve shifts and the VDT becomes a pressure intensifier. The VDT sends a constant power to the cylinder by matching the flow to the pressure (see figure 4).

Thinking differently about the way we transfer energy through fluids is critical for the future of the industry. Energy loss associated with velocity control has become the accepted cost of doing business. This does not need to be the case. The VDT is not just a novel idea that has no practical application.

It has the potential to save billions of dollars in energy costs across the globe. Wherever there is an orifice used for velocity control, there is the potential for a VDT to eliminate the energy loss. ď Ź

ADVANTAGES OF HYDRAULIC CONDITIONING UNITS

W

et Kits (or wet line kits) are kits put into trucks or agriculture equipment that have a Power Take Off (PTO). A PTO receives energy from a power source, such as a running engine, and transmits it to an application, such as an attached implement or separate machines. A variety of applications use these conditioning and cooling units including chemical transports, crude oil transports, CO2 delivery trucks, food transports, LP gas transports/bobtails, maintenance trucks, water trucks, utility and agriculture equipment, bulk feed trucks, and vacuum trucks. A hydraulic conditioning unit (HCU) is designed to be quiet, lightweight, and compact to meet the demanding needs of today’s market.

Typically reservoir volume, for the applications previously mentioned, is equal to 1-1/2 to 2 times the total pump flow. If you have a 25 gpm (gallons per minute) pump, the reservoir size will typically be 38 to 50 gallons. Hydraulic oil weighs 7.3 lbs per gallon, and a 50-gallon steel reservoir weighs 157 lbs dry, plus 365 lbs of oil creates a total weight of 522 lbs. Reservoirs have natural heat radiating capability.

poor air circulation result in reduced heat dissipation. Exposure to direct sun can cause the reservoir to absorb heat, causing the oil temperature to rise above a safe working temperature.

Replacing the reservoir with the cooler will save fuel because of reduced weight and the longevity of the hydraulic systems will last longer by conditioning and keep the oil cool.

Trucks install many accessories, like booms or cranes, and the truck’s PTO activates the wet kits’ hydraulic pump. Then heat begins to generate in the hydraulic system requiring a large reservoir or a cooling package. Without adding an auxiliary heat exchanger, the temperature in a reservoir system will continually rise with use. A long idle period may be necessary for the oil to cool, resulting in lost time.

The HCU is designed to fit in very tight spaces conveniently mounted on the frame rail. MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR in Projects Involving an Elevated Height

ny project that requires maintenance and repair at an elevated height may require a hydraulic system that can safely raise workers to the correct level for maintenance. A truck with a skylift, for example, may be the only way to access a tall building, electrical line, or wind turbine. These types of systems depend on hydraulic fluids to power many of their critical functions, such as platform lift, reach and

leveling – no mean feat when you consider the size, scope and materials of the truck, and its lift. Trucks with skylifts are made of incredibly massive, heavy pieces of steel that include crane-mounted beds with cranes that can measure 60 feet long and are capable of lifting a person hundreds of feet into the air. Ensuring these machines operate at peak capacity is crucial, and ensuring the safety of those on them is of utmost importance.

ONE OF THE FACTORS IN ENSURING COMPLETE SAFETY IS PROPER FILTRATION OUTFITTING. Skylift trucks require filters that will last and adapt to the trucks’ powerfully intense jobs and the incredibly rugged and dirty environments in which they operate. Heavy-duty hydraulic filters help ensure that fluids are kept clean, so that equipment dependent on those fluids can operate safely and efficiently. If contaminants such as dirt, dust or metal shavings pass through an engine, the engine will be damaged, potentially halting the entire system and operation. As these skylifts are frequently chasing various projects, it’s important to ensure these impurity levels are minimal no matter where the project is located. Filtration plays a critical role in protecting the system, as well as the lives of those individuals using the equipment.

The last thing you want is a hydraulic system breakdown in the air because someone used the wrong part or wrong micron rated filter in the equipment."

These heavy-duty skylift vehicles frequently house both a primary and a secondary hydraulic system for safety purposes, with many trucks requiring three filters per hydraulic system – suction line filters, pressure line filters, and return line filters. TOP TIPS FOR SPECIFIC TYPES OF

HEAT EXCHANGER FOULING

When handling difficult materials, such as sewage sludge or corrosive chemicals, heat exchangers can be particularly susceptible to fouling. Having previously looked at the general issue and different types of fouling which may be experienced, it is also useful to look at some of the specific fouling situations encountered by our engineering teams.

Fouling can generally be divided into one of four categories: chemical fouling (including scaling), biological fouling, deposition (or sedimentation) fouling, and corrosion fouling.

In all cases, prevention is better than cure, but as each of these different types of fouling is caused by a different combination of chemical and physical reactions, prevention will take different forms.

The following paragraphs describe some of the most common types of fouling we encounter and the best methods of prevention, but it is by no means an exhaustive list.

(INCLUDING LIMESCALE)

Struvite (magnesium ammonium phosphate) is a phosphate mineral which often precipitates in urine (it is the material that forms kidney stones), particularly in humans and animals which have plant-based diets (which are high in magnesium) or which are infected with ammonia-producing organisms.

Struvite can be a particular problem in sewage and wastewater treatment, especially systems which include anaerobic digestion as this releases ammonium and phosphate. Struvite forms a hard scale on many surfaces, including inside pipe and heat exchangers.

The same considerations which apply to chemical fouling and scaling also apply to preventing struvite formation in heat exchangers. Keeping water temperatures below 65°C will help prevent struvite formation, as will restricting the amount of phosphorus added to the digester. Struvite can often be physically removed, and as struvite is a valuable mineral, many wastewater plants and businesses are looking into commercial struvite recovery.

Limescale is the most familiar chemical fouling agent, as for many of us it builds up in our kettles and pipework. In industrial applications, scaling is particularly problematic where cooling water has a high mineral content.

Symptoms include the classic “limescale” building up inside the heat exchanger (and usually the whole water line, including pipes and pumps), although local factors and different minerals will result in a different appearance. Prevention takes the form of chemical dosing of the water (for example with salt or acid for "hard" water), and chemical agents are required for cleaning or removal.

CHEMICAL FOULING

VIVIANITE Vivianite (ferrous phosphate) is a particular problem where ferric chloride (also known as pickle liquor) is added to sludge to control hydrogen sulfide (H2S) emissions. When water temperatures are too high this can lead to the deposition of a hard blue/ green material (vivianite) on the heat exchanger surface.

As with struvite, keeping water temperatures below 65°C will help prevent vivianite formation, as will carefully controlling the chemicals added to the sludge stream, although this is usually determined by other factors. Cleaning is very difficult, often relying on the use of hydrochloric acid solutions, which may not be compatible with the materials used in heat exchanger and system construction.

QUALITY HYDRAULIC HOSE & ACCESSORIES NEW Biological fouling from algae can often be encountered where river water is used for cooling.

BIOLOGICAL FOULING

ALGAE Algal fouling is particularly encountered where untreated river or canal water is used for cooling. Environmental regulations prevent the use of chemical additives and also limit the temperature increase, so algae quickly grow in what is an ideal environment.

Using high velocities or even scraped surface heat exchangers can prevent fouling, as can the use of construction materials such as copper or brass. A regular cleaning regime is usually necessary.

BIOLOGICAL FOULING

ZEBRA MUSSELS Zebra mussels are an invasive species which is found across the world. They are now established in fresh water bodies in the South East of England and are found in sewers and sewage treatment works. They enter pipework as larvae, then colonize and grow – in the worst cases, hundreds of tonnes of mussels have been removed from some water treatment works.

They are relatively uncommon in heat exchangers, and can be controlled by keeping the velocity of the fluid through the exchanger above 2 m/s to prevent larvae attaching, and by regular flushing.

BIOLOGICAL FOULING

FINAL FILTERED EFFLUENT

Struvite (magnesium ammonium phosphate) is one of the most commonly encountered fouling agents. Companies, such as Ostara, recover it as a valuable nutrient for reuse.

In some wastewater treatment sites, final filtered effluent (FFE) taken after the filter press is used as a free cooling medium. However, due to the high level of biological material contained in FFE, it has a high fouling potential and fouling can quickly occur, depending on the exact nature of both the FFE and the heat exchanger design.

UV treatment of the FFE can help to reduce the biological load, and therefore the potential for fouling, but cleaning normally relies on caustic cleaning-in-place (CIP) systems.

It is therefore important to specify heat exchangers and other equipment that can cope with such caustic cleaning materials.

SEDIMENT DEPOSITION FOULING

BURN-ON Burn-on occurs where the water temperature is too high, causing the sediments (particularly organic materials) to become baked on to the tube wall(s). It often occurs where a malfunction has arisen, for example heating has continued while product flow has stopped, resulting in overheating of the material.

Burn-on can be reduced by good design of the overall system and interlocking the controls for both water and sludge pumps, so that if one stops, so does the other one.

Control of the water temperature (ideally keeping it below 80°C) will also help prevent burn-on. Where it occurs it can usually be removed by physical or chemical cleaning.

This is the most common type of heat exchanger fouling and is caused by particulates in the treated fluid settling out on the surface of the heat exchanger.

It will usually be prevented by good heat exchanger design and choosing the right heat exchanger for the job. For example, making sure that the fluid has sufficient velocity and pressure, the use of corrugated tubes, which can prevent sedimentation, and scraped-surface heat exchangers, which continually remove sedimentation are equally encouraged.

CORROSION FOULING This usually occurs in specific circumstances where either the material being treated or the construction of the heat exchanger itself is particularly susceptible to corrosion. For example, aluminum and copper can be highly reactive and frequently suffers from galvanic corrosion or the formation of oxides on the tube surface where they have been used for the manufacture of heat exchanger tubes.

Using a material which is resistant to such corrosion, yet maintains good thermal transfer properties will overcome most of these issues. Good system design, for example to regularly remove grit, and regular cleaning will also help to prevent the formation of corrosion.

Corrosion fouling usually occurs in specific circumstances.

The above list illustrates some of the most common types of fouling are experienced in heat exchangers in real-world situations, but there may be others, particularly when you are treating materials with a high physical or chemical fouling potential or using high temperatures, which may favor certain chemical reactions or physical processes.

Heat exchanger designers and engineers will use a combination of materials analysis and the calculated fouling factor (a mathematical value which represents the thermal resistance of the deposit[s]) to ensure that the heat exchanger recommended for a particular purpose not only resists fouling for as long as possible, but that if fouling does occur, it can be cleaned and dealt with efficiently and effectively. 

For materials with high fouling potential, a scraped-surface heat exchanger, like the patented HRS Unicus Series, may be required.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT FLUID POWER SEALING SOLUTIONS FOR

DEMAND FOR HEAVY CONSTRUCTION equipment is continuing to grow.

According to a recent report, the global market is expected to exceed a value of $230 billion by 2025. This is a significant increase from a value of $145 billion in 2018.1 What does this mean for suppliers supporting original equipment manufacturers (OEMs)?

It signifies increased demand for the most robust and efficient products and materials to meet greater productivity requirements.

Seals, wipers, and bearings are included among the high-performance products that are essential for hydraulic fluid containment and optimal cylinder performance.

They also help protect people and the environment. OEMs rely on knowledgeable suppliers to select construction equipment products designed for the temperature, pressure, and shock loads of severe operations. Their expertise helps equipment design engineers avoid costly, disruptive product and material failures.

Let’s review some field-proven seals that the construction equipment industry has successfully used for decades.

FOCUS ON THE TASK, THEN THE SEAL Earth moving equipment, dump trucks, cranes, and heavy-duty offroad vehicles comprise a long list of construction and infrastructure worksite tools used worldwide every day. Each machine is powered by at least one hydraulic cylinder, and each cylinder relies on a variety of seals.

However, no single seal size or profile fits all. The solution depends on the application or task each piece of equipment performs. This should be the primary focus. Here are three of the most common and consistently effective sealing products based on the important work they help the construction equipment perform.

UNITIZED PISTON

The unitized piston has been in use by the industry for years, so it can sometimes be taken for granted.

However, it is important to note that it reliably performs in high-pressure environments at 5,000 to 10,000 psi (345 to 690 Bar) continuously. It is available in hundreds of production sizes and offers simplified installation owing to its one part assembly. Specifically, the unitized piston is an assembly of seals and wear elements, which are shipped to the user as one singular part number. Thus, easing logistics and providing a significant improvement in performance and seal life. Performance, of course, comes from the seal’s tight tolerance machining and fit to the cylinder bore which helps prevent large metal-to-metal extrusion gaps and high side load impact.

In heavy-duty construction applications, high shock load and heat are prominent. The 714 piston seal is displacing legacy five-piece designs because of its simplified assembly process and high durability. An OEM used it to upgrade the steering element in one of its machines. After 1.2 million cycles under extreme conditions, the seal continued to perform well, far outpacing what was used previously.

The 714 features a step-cut split based on a specialized manufacturing process that prevents air pockets and protects against pressure spikes in heavy work environments. The advantages can be observed in the bucket lift cylinder where, by nature of the work performed, seals take a beating. In such applications, machines do much more than scoop dirt. They lift and handle a wide range of other interesting work.

The 621 rod seal features a secondary sealing lip located behind the primary sealing lip to stabilize the seal in the gland. An NBR energizer ensures that the seal’s primary sealing lip maintains contact under low- and high-pressure conditions and helps to act as a buffer to absorb shock loads. The 621 is rated for surface speeds 3.0 ft/sec (1.0 m/sec), temperatures from -50° to 230°F (-45° to 110°C), and maximum pressure 10,000 psi (700 Bar).

It incorporates an acetyl anti-extrusion ring to withstand extreme pressure peaks, even with wide extrusion gaps. An added advantage in construction equipment applications is the 621’s composition of materials that are compatible with biodegradable and water-based fluids. In today’s environmentally conscious operating climate, this is a must.

In conclusion, as construction projects increase in volume and scale, so does demand for the most efficient and highest performing sealing materials and designs. The work performed by each machine will dictate its requirements.
