How to Close the Skills Gap at Hydraulic Fluid Facilities BY SHAWN FITZGERALD

It’s no secret U.S. manufacturers are struggling to find the right talent for their open jobs. We all know how important it is to fill the positions left vacant by retiring baby boomers, but it’s alarming when you see that one-third of parents1 would dissuade a child from pursuing a manufacturing job and that enrollment in manufacturing apprenticeships dropped by 40%.2 Those factors add up quickly; Deloitte predicts 2 million manufacturing jobs will go unfilled, and the skills gap will triple by 2025. While the younger generations are familiar with big-name brands such as GE and Tesla, it’s companies further down the supply chain that need to step up their game. Take hydraulic fluid companies as an example. They’re very important to those companies in aerospace and automotive we mentioned above, but they don’t have multi-million-dollar advertising campaign budgets at their disposal. There’s still important work to be done without the massive price tag—and we at THOMASNET.com are here to help. Here are three ways you can help close the skills gap and set up your company (and industry) for long-term success:

OFFER APPRENTICESHIPS AT YOUR COMPANY STEM education helps bring awareness, but it’s up to us to take advantage of the opportunity by mentoring and guiding younger employees to build a career path in manufacturing. The best way to showcase how great it can be to work in manufacturing is by seeing it firsthand through apprenticeships. This is a great opportunity to get those workers straight out of high school and in college the training they need from veteran employees, which will help them learn firsthand from experienced workers and pick up the tricks of the trade. concentration of particles larger than 4, 6, and 14 µm(c). For hydraulic, engine, and aerospace applications involving petroleum-based fluids, particle size is reported in µm(c) to indicate that the particle counter was calibrated according to NIST-traceable ISO 11171. The values of the integers are obtained by relating the actual particle count data to values given in the standard (refer to Table 1 from ISO 4406). An increase of one ISO code unit corresponds to a doubling in particle concentration. Consider, for example, an oil sample taken from a system that contains 2364 particles per mL larger than 4 µm(c), 876 particles per mL larger than 6 µm(c), 166 particles per mL larger than 10 µm(c), 59 particles per mL greater than 14 µm(c), and 14 particles per mL greater than 21 µm(c). These results are graphically represented in Fig. 1. To most, this is information overload. On the other hand, this same sample corresponds to an ISO code of 18/17/13. This tells us how clean the oil is and that there are twice as many particles larger than 4 µm(c) as at 6 µm(c) particles, and 16 times as many larger than 6 µm(c) than at 14 µm(c) particles. This can be quickly compared to system cleanliness specifications to determine what, if any, service is required.

t has been estimated, in commonly available literature1, that between 75 and 90 percent of hydraulic system failures may be attributed to contamination issues. Automatic particle counting provides a cost-effective way to monitor fluid cleanliness levels and ensure reliable equipment operation. Particle count data is expressed in terms of the number concentration of particles larger than a certain size per unit volume of fluid. Unfortunately, interpretation of the raw particle count data is not always straightforward. Analysts must consider concentration data for at least three different particle sizes. As shown in Fig. 1, the magnitudes of the concentration data for these sizes typically ranges over 2 to 3 orders of magnitude, while the slope of concentration versus size data provides important context for the interpretation. Fortunately, ISO 4406 provides a simplified method of communicating this complex information in a way that facilitates both interpretation and understanding of particle count data. ISO 4406 provides a standardized method of reporting particle count data. Commonly known as the ISO Code, ISO 4406 reports data in the form of X/Y/Z, where X, Y, and Z are integers whose values correspond to the number

ISO 4406 is widely used in hydraulic and diesel fuel applications. It is used to report cleanliness levels and verify pass/fail criteria for new hydraulic oil and diesel fuel shipments. ISO code data from equipment rolling off assembly lines can be used as a quality tool to ensure system cleanliness and reduce warranty costs. It is also used as a tool to track historical fluid cleanliness levels in operating equipment. This enables operators to monitor equipment condition, troubleshoot problems, optimize service intervals, and reduce unscheduled downtime. Given the importance of contaminant control for hydraulic and diesel engine applications, the value of ISO 4406 in communicating fluid and system cleanliness in a clear, concise manner cannot be overstated.

August 10, 2017 – The global manufacturing sector has turned a corner, expanding modestly on improving demand and buoyed by stronger economic growth in key export markets and by a weaker U.S. dollar. On that latter point, the U.S. dollar has depreciated 7.6% year-todate in 2017 against major currencies, but it remained nearly 17% higher than it was three years ago. For manufacturers, growth in the dollar’s value over the past three years presents a real challenge as firms seek to increase exports. Yet, that drag was lessened recently, especially with sizable depreciation in the dollar so far this year. Using non-seasonally adjusted data, U.S.-manufactured goods exports have risen

3.9% year-to-date in June relative to the same time period last year—a welcome development after weaker data the past two years. For its part, the International Monetary Fund predicts 3.5% and 3.6% economic growth globally in 2017 and 2018, respectively, up from 3.2% growth in 2016.

Europe continued to dominate the list of the top export markets with strong manufacturing growth. Among the top 15 markets for U.S.-manufactured goods exports, those countries with the highest purchasing managers’ index (PMI) readings in the sector in

July included the Netherlands, Germany, the United Arab Emirates, Canada, the United Kingdom, and France. Manufacturing activity in the Netherlands once again notched its best reading since April 2011, with Austria and Germany easing in July but at paces not far from their six-year highs. Nonetheless, July showed some slippage in the data among the top-15 markets, especially considering none in that group contracted in June. South Korea returned to negative terrain in July, contracting for the 11th time in the past 12 months on sharp reductions in output and exports. At the same time, Brazil fell back to neutral territory, ending three straight monthly expansions but with still growing—but slower—demand and production. Real GDP in the Eurozone increased 0.6% in the second quarter. That translated into 2.1% growth year-over-year, its quickest pace since the first quarter of 2011. (New industrial production data for June will be released on August 14.) In May, industrial production jumped 1.3%, the fastest monthly rate since November and led by strength in energy and consumer goods. On a year-over-year basis, industrial production has risen 4.0%, a pace not seen since August 2011. Retail sales rose 0.5% in June, a three-month high. Over the past 12 months, retail spending has risen 3.1%, continuing an accelerating trend. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate in June dropped to 9.1%, its lowest level since February 2009. We have also seen stronger growth in the Chinese manufacturing sector. The Caixin China General Manufacturing PMI rose for the second straight month to its fastest pace since March. It was the 11th time in the past 13 months the headline index has expanded, illustrating continued progress in the economic outlook after weaknesses in 2015 and early 2016. Overall, the Chinese economy grew 6.9% year-over-year in the second quarter, the same pace as in the first quarter. This reflects an acceleration after struggles over much of the past year or so, with 6.7% growth in 2016. Among those lines, industrial production rose from 6.5% year-over-year in May to 7.6% in June, matching the rate in March and definite progress from the 6.2% average in 2016. There was a similar trend for retail sales, but fixed-asset investment has cooled since the spring. (New data for each of these measures for July will be released on August 14.) Closer to home, the IHS Markit Canada Manufacturing PMI increased from 54.7 in June to 55.5 in July, its best reading since April’s sixyear high. The pace of new orders matched the index in March, with both at levels last seen in October 2014. That would seem to indicate that the Canadian manufacturing sector has begun to recover from challenges across the past two years. Real GDP in Canada grew 0.9% in the first quarter, picking up from the 0.7% gain in the fourth quarter. That translated into 3.7% growth at the annual rate in the first quarter, with both consumer and business spending boosting the Canadian economy. sales and retail spending saw healthy gains in May and in year-over-year data. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate declined 0.3% in July, its lowest level since October 2008, and manufacturers added 13,700 workers in July, with year-over-year growth of 53,000 employees. Negotiations to modernize the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) will launch on August 16 as the NAM leads business efforts to ensure that core property protection provisions and investment enforcement tools are maintained and upgraded. Business groups across the country also join the NAM in oppos-

ing the nomination of Scott Garrett to lead the U.S. Export-Import (Ex-Im) Bank. New legislation imposes sanctions on Russia, Iran, and North Korea, while U.S.-China commercial dialogue does not produce concrete results.

Servo-Electric Pump Drive Optimizes Hydraulic Presses — From a Technical and Energy-Efficiency Perspective

A hydraulic pump directly coupled with a servomotor is an energyefficient solution that delivers highly dynamic performance typically with double-digit energy savings. The press manufacturer Lasco uses this servo-electric pump drive for solid and sheet metal-forming presses. “Our new servo technology provides substantial energy savings for companies operating our presses,” said Harald Barnickel, head of the Electrical Engineering Department at Lasco Umformtechnik GmbH, a machine-tool builder in Coburg, Germany. This well-known manufacturer of systems for solid forming and sheet metal-forming produces screw presses, forging hammers, forging and cross wedge rolls, and even complete plants that are used by the building-materials industry to produce sand-lime products. When Lasco was first founded in 1863, the main focus was on the iron foundry. However, just a few years later, the company began producing water turbines, followed by forging

machines in 1880. Since then, the concentration has been on producing machines for forming technology worldwide. “As a solution provider, we develop customized systems for optimized workpiece transport within the press, as well as for feeding and removing workpieces,” Barnickel said. The company has a strong focus on continuous improvement in its processes and technology. The servo technology mentioned above is exactly this kind of technological milestone, as demonstrated through Lasco’s implementation in a recently delivered deep-drawing press with a press force of 800 tons for up to 40 strokes per minute.

A FAST CONTROLLER AT THE CORE

At the core of this type of solution is a Simotics 1PH8 servomotor from Siemens, which directly drives the hydraulic pump. This drive is controlled by the Sinamics S120 drive platform. A Simotion D445 motion control system handles the complete path, velocity, and position control of the axes (the Simotion controller and Sinamics drive are both from the same manufacturer). With a response time of 250 µs, up to 256 axes can be rapidly synchronized, and precise axis motion and curve profiles are executed. This applies to the closed-loop control performance, as well as to its energy efficiency and the application as a whole. The challenge on the deep-drawing press was to control the press force and press speed, based on a motion profile that could be set individually. The hydraulic force, and thus the press force, can be adjusted at the servomotor by means of the torque. The plunger speed is controlled by the motor speed and thus by the volumetric flow rate of the pump. For the project described, axial reciprocating pumps with a fixed displacement per revolution were used.

SCALABILITY OF THE PUMP SYSTEMS IS A SIGNIFICANT ADVANTAGE

Four such pump systems connected simultaneously for a maximum pressure of 250 bar supply the pressure line for the press stroke of the plunger; three additional pump systems are responsible for the return stroke of the press plunger. “The possibility of scaling—in other words, adapting this kind of standard servo solution to the actual requirements—is another advantage of this new technology that certainly cannot be underestimated,” said Barnickel. The hydraulic oil tank of the deep-drawing press holds about 2377 gallons (9,000 liters). Because of the high flow rate of 16,000 l/min, filling valves are used for the fast, downward motion of the plunger. The servo pumps provide the required flow rate for the actual pressing operation, with a speed of up to 100 mm/s. In the past, high-precision control valves with zero overlap were necessary to obtain the precise

traversing profiles. Today, this function is handled by the motion control system, in conjunction with the servo pumps. Thanks to this new technology, the valve systems in the press can be reduced by up to 40%. The remaining valve technology is mainly needed to comply with machine safety specifications.

ENERGY MILESTONE

As a result of the new technology, the expensive and traditional valve systems were eliminated, and energy efficiency has been significantly improved. “In the past, the large cooling systems for the hydraulic oil had to be installed before the first test run at Lasco,” Barnickel said. “But now, with servo technology, significantly smaller units can be used, and they are not required until the press is actually operational at the customer’s facility.”

One reason for this is that the oil is no longer forced through the narrow gaps at the control edges of the control valves, which means that these types of technology-related losses no longer occur in the first place. The press manufacturer is seeing efficiency improvements well into the double-digit range depending on the application, significantly reducing users’ electricity costs, compared to older machines. When comparing the new technology with very basic hydraulic presses using conventional technology, the amount of energy saved is certainly less than with presses equipped with complex control systems. The energy-saving effect is especially apparent during the drawing operation, during which the drawing pressure

is provided by a pump equipped with a servomotor, with the motor of the die cushion pump thereby operating as a generator. Another advantage of the electrical system used here is that energy can actually be recovered when the hydraulic fluid decompresses. This happens when the system is decompressed after the pressing operation and the main cylinder pressure must be reduced from 250 bar down to approximately 10 bar before the filling valve to the tank can be released. This operation takes approximately 100 ms. In the case of a compressibility of the hydraulic oil used of approximately 2.5% by volume, with a cylinder volume of approximately 800 liters of oil, the “spring energy” in the oil flows through the axial reciprocating pump and drives the servomotor. This effect is amplified when the press mechanical system is relieved. In this so-called generator or regenerative operation, the corresponding electrical energy is fed into the DC link of the S120 drive during each cycle. “However, in addition to the energy recovered, the other advantage is that there are no additional power losses in the form of heat, as would be the case with conventional concepts,” Barnickel said.

STRAIGHTFORWARD OPTIMIZATION — AND EVERYTHING IMMEDIATELY DOCUMENTED

Although the Siemens Simotion controller has been specifically optimized to address motion-control applications, Simotion can also control the complete system. However, Lasco’s philosophy is to separate the various press tasks and therefore a separate PLC is used for the system control. As a fail-safe control, this also addresses the safety technology requirements. Simotion can be programmed in various ways, for instance, with high-level-language, graphic programming, or Motion Control Chart (MCC), as well as a classic logic control. The trace function with eight-channel plotter supports commissioning engineers and ensures detailed documentation of the press operation. Control parameters are saved in the drive, guaranteeing seamless documentation of the drive system.

SAFETY TECHNOLOGY SIMPLY INTEGRATED

In addition, the fail-safe Simatic S7-319 F 3PN/ DP PLC from Siemens, used here as the press system control, allows all safety technology to be implemented without any major additional expense. The fail-safe signals are read via distributed Simatic ET200S I/O stations from the same manufacturer and transferred to the control via Profisafe. This represents a simple yet complete solution for Barnickel, who said, “As a consequence, we obtain a clear machine structure.”

For instance, there are generally two monitored valves that monitor the reduced traversing speed of the plunger when setting up. The new solution is far more precise, where the fail-safe S120 drive also monitors the reduced speed (Safely Limited Speed: SLS) as well as a safe stop (Safe Stop 1: SS1).

automatically identifies the servomotor and reads its parameters. Another interesting feature of this servo solution is that the 1PH8 motors are available either as synchronous or asynchronous motors. The application itself, or more specifically, the dynamic performance required, is the decisive element in selecting the appropriate motor type, according to Barnickel. Both versions have the same mechanical mounting dimensions, the same wiring, and the same encoder connection. Here, too, this technology has some significant advantages. For instance, instead of a typical 17-core cable, a single cable with RJ45 connector is sufficient. And finally, this new drive concept for hydraulic presses, based on a servo-electric pump control, results in a significant overall improvement: “In addition to the energy savings, its extremely precise controllability is far superior to that of a classic valve control,” said Barnickel. As he further noted, any defined motion profiles can be precisely implemented using this concept. The motion control system has also proven itself to be extremely valuable in certain steps of the pressing process. For instance, if the plunger moves to upper dead center, then the closed-loop position control in Simotion ensures that any leakages are compensated. “A far higher precision is achieved when using servo technology than when using pure valve technology,” Barnickel said.

Online Hydraulic Safety Awareness Training – Self-Paced IFPS, in collaboration with the International Hydraulics Safety Authority, offers online Hydraulic Safety Awareness Training courses that provide an awareness of hydraulic hazards in the workplace, in-depth reviews of potential exposures to injury from hydraulic systems, and ways to reduce risk and eliminate hazards for workers, equipment, companies, and the environment. Four (4) online hydraulic safety awareness training courses are offered: 1. Exposure Level 3. Hydraulic Safety in Construction 2. High-Risk Maintenance Level 4. Fluid Injection Awareness Online Training – Self-Paced Each course delivers a broad-based understanding of the most important fluid power subject matter concepts. Courses begin with the basics: physics laws, systems basics and design, basic analysis, and basic components. The Festival included a robotics event at SNHU Arena in Manchester, the same city where FIRST held its first-ever official Sport for the Mind™ event in a high school gymnasium 25 years ago. Winning alliances of robotics teams from the FIRST® Robotics Competition and FIRST® Tech Challenge Championship events in Houston and St. Louis competed in the last official games of the 2016-17 season. PLCs are very flexible, but machine builders that need precision hydraulic motion control, coupled with data acquisition during the machine cycle, can benefit by selecting an electro-hydraulic motion controller that is specialized for the task. Consider, for example, the manufacturing of wheel and axle assemblies for the railcar manufacturing industry. The process of attaching wheels and bearings to axles must meet the strict specifications of the Association of American Railroads (AAR). The AAR requires that, in addition to making sure that precise assembly measurements are adhered to, a record is kept of the forces encountered during the pressing process. One supplier of railcar wheel assembly machines to meet these exacting requirements is Mittler Brothers Machine & Tool Company of Wright City, Mo. Mittler makes machines and tooling of all types. The machines they make for railcar wheel assembly do their work in two sequential steps: first, the wheels are pressed onto the axle, one at a time, and then second, bearings are pressed onto the axle, one on each end, being sure to keep the axle centered during the process. A completed assembly is shown in Fig. 1. Mittler had produced a railroad wheel assembly machine years ago, but was recently contacted by a North American rail car company to produce a new machine. Mittler’s design team decided to take this opportunity to upgrade their hydraulic controls. The previ-

ous system worked, but the wiring of its analog hydraulic control module was complex, and the programming of the PLC that controlled the overall motion was difficult. Plus, the company wanted to incorporate an automatic means of making sure that the axle is centered in the press during the bearing assembly operation. This new approach required an upgrade to the PLC and the incorporation of a new digital electro-hydraulic motion controller.

MITTLER SEEKS NEW MOTION CONTROLLER At the recommendation of Mittler’s local hydraulic distributor, John Henry Foster Company of St. Louis, the Mittler Bros team selected the RMC150 from Delta Computer Systems, Inc. of Battle Ground, Wash., an eight-axis controller with special capabilities for precise closed-loop control of hydraulic systems (Fig. 2). Fig. 3 shows the RMC151 in the electrical panel to the left of the 16” bore cylinder in the wheel press. With the new Delta motion controller in place, the manufacturing process has been automated as follows. In the first phase of operation, when the wheels are attached to the axle, the RMC receives inputs from position transducers mounted in the wheel press cylinders, pressing the wheels, one at a time, onto the axle journals until precise target positions are reached. sensors mounted in each wheel press cylinder on either side of the piston. The pressures are logged and the data is retained in an information log that is kept for each axle. “Per the AAR spec, we need to position the wheels to within a tolerance of 0.090 inch,” said Jim Heinrich, Mittler Brothers engineer. “And this tolerance must be achieved while exerting up to 200 tons of force in attaching the wheels.” The second phase of the assembly process involves attaching bearings to the axle, one on each end, outboard of the wheels. During this phase of operation, it is critical for the axle not to shift while the bearings are being pressed onto it from each end. Sensors were added, enabling the RMC to monitor the axle’s position, press velocities, and forces exerted, while comparing them against setpoint values. The RMC refers to this information as it performs calculations that are required in order to keep the axle centered during the bearing press operation.

The Mittler Brothers engineer made full use of the development tools provided by Delta Computer Systems, in a package called RMCTools, which is included free to support the company’s motion controllers. Among the software package’s many features is the Plot Manager, which captures and plots all key motion parameters during a move operation, enabling the comparison of the actual motion with the desired motion profile. The goal in tuning the motion is to make changes to the closed-loop gain parameters to reduce the error between actual and target profiles. The tuning process is further simplified by a Tuning Wizard feature that is also included in the RMCTools package. Most of the programming and tuning was done by Jim Heinrich of Mittler Brothers, with some assistance by Delta’s field engineer during system tuning.

DATA ACQUISITION PARAMETERS UPLOADABLE FROM THE MOTION CONTROLLER As mentioned previously, one of the key requirements imposed on railway wheel and axle assembly manufacturers is the need to keep detailed per-assembly records of the pressing process. The apparatus for doing this in the old system was complex, and using the Delta controller in the new system implementation is much simpler. “With the old system, we had to duplicate the analog signals coming from the hydraulic control unit and send them to another piece of hardware,” said Jim Heinrich. “We split the analog signals and ran one set to the PLC for control purposes and the other to the press recorder for charting.” In the new system, wiring and setup of the data acquisition function are simplified because

The press data recorder can upload all motion parameters from each press operation directly out of the Delta RMC data registers, using a register mapping feature, via the controller’s built-in Ethernet interface.

A SIMPLIFIED DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT PROCESS Thanks to the use of a powerful motion controller, with built-in support for pressure/force control in addition to position control, Mittler Brothers was able to streamline the motion controls of this multi-stage metals press. Data acquisition was also made easier by choosing a motion controller that facilitates data acquisition for the motion operations. “Using the Delta controller both saved us development time and provided a controls platform that will be easier for us and our customers to maintain for years into the future,” concluded Jim Heinrich.

DESIGNING THE SYSTEM “We achieved significant reductions in the amount of programming steps that we had to write in the controls reimplementation because the Delta RMC was much easier to program than the previous controller, and a lot of that old code was on the PLC,” said Jim Heinrich. “We could do complex programming quickly in the Delta RMC unit that would have taken many rungs of ladder logic programming in the PLC. All told, we were able to eliminate hundreds of lines of code from the PLC program by using RMC. “Plus, we were able to simplify the wiring of our system, and we had access to a lot more information on the status of each motion axis due to Ethernet connectivity between the motion controller and the data recorder,” added Jim. “The old controller was connected via analog signals, which required complex point-to-point wiring for axis control and status signals.” One of the most complex tasks was to program the motion controller to keep the axle centered during the bearing press operation, as a net force of up to 100 tons is applied. “The Delta controller greatly simplified the programming to center the axle to achieve this specification,” said Jim Heinrich. THE CHALLENGE

Aisle width in warehouses is being reduced to maximize storage space within a building footprint, and many lift-truck manufacturers are having to adopt the latest technologies to ensure material-handling vehicles can operate safely and effectively within these new, narrow-aisle environments. Additionally, many lift-truck operators are reviewing the environmental impact of running forklifts using traditional internal-combustion engines, but until recently, electric-powered vehicles haven’t been able to provide similar levels of performance and productivity associated with traditional internal-combustion applications. During its research and development process, Nexen identified the need for electric models, and its latest X-Range includes the three-wheeled FBXT lift truck using a Nexen-designed and manufactured axle and a four-wheel FBX version using a purpose-designed steering axle. For both axle types, Nexen needed rotary piston sensors that could detect steering position, with feedback from the sensor enabling control of the truck speed and direction displayed to the operator via a cabin-mounted Graphical User Interface (GUI).

THE SOLUTION

A bespoke version of Curtiss-Wright’s NRH272 has been supplied with a 5V power supply option, 10-90% voltage output, Deutsch DT04 connectors, and an electrical output set to correspond to rotations of between 20° and 360°. For added safety functionality, the sensor’s onboard diagnostic functions mean the outputs can enter into safe, predefined states should an internal sensor error be detected. The NRH271/NRH272 range of non-contact, rotary position sensors with Hall-effect sensing technology is designed to supply an optimum combination of performance, safety, and cost-effectiveness. The sensor is accommodated in a low-profile housing with a compact footprint; its robust design offers protection from water, dust, shock, vibration, and temperature, making it suitable for use in arduous, on- and off-highway vehicle applications. Connection options are industry-standard AMP Superseal (IP68-rated) or Deutsch DT04 series (IP67-rated) connectors, or simple flying leads for customer termination. The sensor can also be supplied with a protective conduit for the cabling.

Each June, the NFPA Board of Directors holds a strategic retreat where we talk about the many challenges facing the fluid power industry, and what NFPA is and should be doing to help our members address them. It is at this meeting where we review and, if necessary, adjust what we have come to call our Strategy Agenda – the list of strategic objectives and success metrics that we must achieve if we are to make good on our mission of strengthening the fluid power industry. At this past June’s meeting, we recognized some substantial strategic and program successes that have occurred over the past year. Our membership has continued to grow, but what has grown more significantly is member participation in our many activities. Our conferences, our leadership committees, our trade shows, our market information programs – participation in all of these activities is high and increasingly diverse, as we continue to see the value of bringing the entire fluid power supply chain together into one organization. Similarly, our work with a broad network of education partners continues to advance, with each year bringing a new record number of middle school, high school, technical school, and university students introduced to and educated in fluid power through our many programs and partnerships. The Board remains committed to this agenda, defined by our five ends statements – the clear, high-level objectives that describe the major outcomes that we wish to achieve for our members and our industry: • NFPA provides an effective forum for fluid power manufacturers, distributors, and suppliers to advance their collective interests. • NFPA provides its members with timely and accurate industry statistics and business intelligence that support improved decision-making. • NFPA provides opportunities and resources for its members to promote the unique strengths and inherent advantages offered by modern fluid power technology. • NFPA helps increase the number of technically trained people capable of integrating and applying fluid power, and connects them to careers in the fluid power industry. • NFPA helps increase the number of university engineers educated in fluid power, and connects them to careers in the fluid power industry. As the Board discussed ways to continue to advance this agenda in our 2017-18 fiscal year, during which I am honored to serve as the chairman of the NFPA Board, our focus returned again and again to two key initiatives:

1. Improving the value proposition for our distributor members. Distributors, especially those that provide system integration, engineering, or other value-added services to our customers, are an increasingly vital component of the fluid power supply chain. More than a dozen years ago, NFPA reshaped itself to better include these channel partners in the membership and activities of our association. The wisdom of that decision is clearer today than ever before, but several institutional barriers to their full integration persist. Over the course of the next year, our Board has resolved to remove those barriers, meaning that we not only will be asking more of our distributor members, but also delivering an improved value proposition to them – more programs and services tailored to their unique needs. Our Distributor Council, ably led by Jim Kaas of Iowa Fluid Power and Jim Slone of SunSource, will be at the forefront of those changes, and both individuals have been elected to voting seats on our Board of Directors to better facilitate the necessary changes. 2. Connecting our members to the new talent being generated by our workforce development strategy. Through our many different programs and partnerships, more undergraduate and technical school students are being educated in fluid power than ever before. Based on our initial estimates of workforce need within our membership, those numbers, in fact, are approaching those that should be necessary to satisfy that need. And yet, many, if not most, of our members tell us that they still struggle to find the fluid power talent they need to keep their businesses growing. Indeed, in survey after survey, the creation of a fluid power-educated workforce still represents the biggest challenge their companies face. We’ve already communicated that our successful financial partnership with the Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power (CCEFP) will be coming to an end at the close of our current fiscal year. With two new federal programs launched that can provide substantial fluid power research funding to our CCEFP and other academic partners, NFPA’s attention will be turning more fully toward the continued growth of validated fluid power education programs within undergraduate engineering and technical school programs. The ongoing financial support of our members will be key to success in this area, but so will their active engagement as mentors and hiring managers. Tackling these challenges in the year ahead will require the dedicated attention of both the Board and our professional staff. I am looking forward to a very active year as your Board chair. 2017 Milwaukee Regional Scheduled to Hit a Homerun The first of NFPA’s 2017 fall regional meetings has been scheduled for Milwaukee on Tuesday, October 10. This lunch meeting will be held at Friday’s Front Row Grill at the Miller Park Major League Baseball Stadium. NFPA regional meetings are open to both NFPA members

NEWS 2017 ESA FALL TECH CONFERENCE IN PHOENIX This year's annual Equipment Service Association (ESA) Fall Technical Conference will be held November 8–9 in Phoenix, AZ at the Crown Plaza Phoenix Airport. Also in Phoenix, an IFPS Fluid Power Specialist Certification review will take place on November 10 and testing will be on November 11.
