ANDREA SMITH, DDS Owner/Prosthodontist Berks Prosthodontics

Dr. Andrea Smith is the founder of Berks Prosthodontics. A prosthodontist is a dental specialist who has completed dental school plus a three-year Advanced Prosthodontics residency at an ADA-accredited graduate program focusing on technical excellence in the restoration and replacement of teeth. Prosthodontists are THE acknowledged experts in dental implant restorations, crowns, bridges, dentures, cosmetic dentistry, and full-mouth implant prosthetics such as Teeth-in-One-Day or All-On-4. A Berks County native, Dr. Smith received her Bachelor of Science degree in Pre-Medicine from Penn State University, where she graduated as Class Valedictorian of the Eberly College of Science. She then attended the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine in New York City, where she again graduated as Class Valedictorian with a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree. After receiving her dental degree, Dr. Smith completed three years of specialty training in the field of Prosthodontics at UCLA’s Advanced Prosthodontics Residency Program, followed by an additional one-year residency at UCLA in Maxillofacial Prosthetics, making her one of only 350 Maxillofacial Prosthodontists worldwide. Dr. Smith returned to our area in 2009 to become the first female Clinical Director of the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic, the oldest clinic in the world devoted to the treatment of children born with facial birth defects, a position she held for seven years. In 2015, Dr. Smith opened Berks Prosthodontics in Wyomissing, bringing her specialty training back to her hometown. At Berks Prosthodontics she sees patients with a wide variety of dental concerns, such as broken or missing teeth, uncomfortable dentures, extensive tooth wear, or dissatisfaction with the appearance of their smile. More than 100 area dentists, oral surgeons and other dental specialists trust her to handle their patients’ complex or cosmetic dental needs. From a single perfect tooth to state-of-the-art full mouth reconstruction, Dr. Smith strives to provide all of her patients with an unparalleled level of care.

MORE THAN BOOKS: CHECK OUT THE LIBRARY OF THINGS

for the Holiday Season

Libraries loaning things out isn’t a new concept, and as the economy of sharing continues to grow, Berks County Public Libraries are offering more than books. Nontraditional collections housed at each community library, referred to as the “Library of Things,” are lending a hand. Launched in 2022, materials from the Library of Things have circulated more than 1,700 times and range from yard games to cameras, even a cordless leaf blower. “Each library has its own curated collection that lives at that location, whether it be tools, gadgets, gizmos and more,” says Emily Orischak, Community Relations Coordinator for Berks County Public Libraries. Items have been selected with temporary projects in mind as well as price, allowing Berks County residents to borrow items before they make a significant purchase. The public library’s role is changing in the 21st century, and as patrons look to their library for a variety of reasons, the Library of Things is there to support these curiosities, well beyond books, CDs and DVDs. AROUND TOWN Different by Design

More Than a Store EVELYN & HARRIETTE’S GIFTS

BY COURTNEY ELL PHOTOS COURTESY EVELYN & HARRIETTE’S GIFTS

It was a bitter cold January in 1961 when the ever-affable Stuart worked up the nerve to buy academic darling Annesley a cup of coffee. He was captivated, and it only took him two more weeks to learn her name and for them both to reveal that neither even liked coffee. College sweethearts Stuart (82) and Annesley (84) Kern are now celebrating 62 years of marriage and 55 years of doing business differently … together. As with every brilliant piece in their shop, it all just had to begin with a story.

Stepping through the threshold of Evelyn & Harriette’s Gifts (so named for their mothers) is quite an unexpected sensory experience. At first glance, you may feel as if you’ve stepped into a marvelous global art gallery. With exquisite craftsmanship and endless eye candy to ogle at every turn, you discover fine Irish tweeds, Killarney newsboy hats, woolen lambswool capelets and luxurious tartan scarves straight from County Kerry, Ireland. Timeless textiles and authentic woven calicoes form wearable works of art. Corinthian bells chime alongside elaborate Uzbekistan blown glass, signature Czech ornaments, contemporary prints from upstate New York, Germany and beyond — Finnish Löök’s quirky cards, Vietnamese paper arts and a multitude of rare stationery components. A stunning array of vibrant, hand-painted Polish earthenware and famed Majolica pieces of Gorky Pottery are already vying to be your next cherished family heirloom piece … while also being durable, non-nonporous and microwave, oven and dishwasher safe! Their nod to the global market is apparent while shining light on lesser-known local creators who may otherwise never be seen. A far cry from oft-coined “tourist traps,” Stuart asserts, “We don't do kitsch or trends. What gives a product or an item value is the story behind it. You don’t get stories from Amazon or Walmart. You get shelves of stuff and, without the story, it is just stuff. We sell romance, history — adventure!” At its core, their shop is fueled by stories, and like hounds on a scent, they’ve traversed countless miles of trade show floors in scrupulous pursuit of the most exceptional tales.

Top-Tier Toys

Upstairs, you’ll find a bona fide cornucopia of thoughtfully sourced interactive toys for all ages and play styles, from sophisticated concept toys for your little explorer to darling porcelain tea sets and hand puppets so well made that

they could be Jim Henson’s friends. Fostering creative engagement are crafting and science kits, a Montessori range, mesmerizing kinetic and sensory-friendly toys, EXEO Duo battle games for hardcore strategists, puzzles and finely crafted wooden letter blocks in 26 languages, including braille.

Something for Everyone

Evelyn & Harriette’s captivating offerings are sure to resonate from heart to hearth. Their ability to cater to traditional and contemporary tastes alike is uncanny. The shop’s carousel of ever-revolving and ultracaptivating treasures, each steeped in their own vivid lore, will guarantee you never leave empty-handed. Annesley and Stuart have masterfully curated a global patchwork of distinctive, durable and undeniably appealing items.

IN THE LIMELIGHT

work to produce this magical experience which I do not think is present at other museums. For example, we have a fine collection of prints and other gifts of paintings, sculptures and artwork in The Museum so that someone can take a very inexpensive piece of that very expensive piece of art home with them. It's neat when they say, “I love this gift shop,” or “This is our favorite gift shop.”

Q:

What do you enjoy outside of building relationships at The Museum?

Jeffery Fick CUSTOMER SERVICE & GIFT SHOP COORDINATOR

AT THE READING PUBLIC MUSEUM BY SARAH MATARELLA PHOTO BY JOHN A. SECOGES, SECOGES PHOTOGRAPHICS Jeffery Fick embarked on a full-circle journey from being one of the first Reading Public Museum campers to revitalizing the gift shop at the museum in a full-time position. He has stocked the shop with themed, one-of-a-kind gifts, and his welcoming energy creates a magical experience for anyone who visits.

Q:

What was your professional background before working at The Museum?

I worked for the City of Reading as the art specialist and supervisor of the Third and Spruce Recreation Center for 13 years. I left there to open a retail flower business. I did that for several years, then took a little hiatus. I sold my business and then worked at other flower retail businesses. But recreation was where I started working with families and taught crafts to playground leaders and kids throughout the City of Reading.

10

NOVEMBER 2023 | berkscountyliving.com

Q:

What brought you back to working with families?

I grew up in the Reading School District, and I always had a fondness for the Reading Public Museum. I came here as one of the first camp kids when I was a young boy and always loved it. I thought this would be a great place to kind of end my career path and come full circle.

Q:

How has the gift shop evolved since you started nine years ago?

When I first started, we really didn't have much. Our then-director

said, “Before you came along, we were planning on closing the shop.” We're now at the point where we offer so many things, and it takes a team of people to put it together. Diane Ruth (my supervisor) and Kristen Ruth (who assists me with buying merchandise) and I work with our volunteers and the rest of our team to organize, reorganize and plan … especially when new events and exhibits rotate often. We offer gifts that pertain to the exhibits.

Q:

What is something that people may not expect to gain from visiting The Museum?

We are essentially putting on a show. I always liken us to magicians, whether it be in the gift shop or throughout The Museum. The curatorial team and everybody involved

I'm a new homeowner, so I'm busy learning new things about my home: the good and the bad. I'm also getting to know my neighbors and my community more. I've always lived in West Reading, so I love the area. I like to go to the farmers market. I've been to many farmers markets in other areas, and I think we have some of the best markets and vendors. I like antiquing and painting as well, but I don't sell any of my things in the shop. At this point in my personal and professional life, I encourage other artists to and help bring out the best in them.

That’s S’more Like It

Old Fashioned FROM FORK & ALE PAIR IT WITH…

one of our house-made desserts OR snuggling by a campfire.

BAR STOOL HAVE A DRINK WITH GARIT DECKER

As part of the opening crew in 2016, Decker has bartended at Fork & Ale in Douglassville for almost 7 years. It is where he first learned to make cocktails. Says Garit, “Since then, I have developed my own style and have become inspired to create variations based upon classic cocktails. My mixology is driven by balancing and using fresh, seasonal, and sometimes unusual ingredients. I love how this cocktail reflects fall, which is my favorite time of the year!”

TIPS

COMPILED BY NIKKI M. MURRY | PHOTOS BY TANIA COLAMARINO, AMA PHOTOGRAPHY What’s special about this featured drink? Everyone loves s’mores! Flavors of caramelized sugar, graham cracker, chocolate and smoke are packed into a cocktail where Bourbon provides charred wood notes, and the bitter nuance of cocoa nib-infused Tequila balances the sweet creaminess of the marshmallow. This is a spirit-forward, flavor-packed seasonal cocktail! By infusing the spirits and syrups with authentic flavors, we can keep the simplicity of a classic Old Fashioned recipe but swap in spirits, sweeteners and bitters that carry unique and different flavors.

For what occasion would you recommend this cocktail? The flavors of this cocktail are universally loved. It can be enjoyed around a campfire or fireplace on a cool evening used to impress guests as a dessert or after-dinner sipper. Most would agree s’mores are a favorite no matter the occasion, and this cocktail brings all the nostalgic flavor elements together into an adult experience.

Fork & Ale | 1281 E. Main St., Douglassville 610.953.3675 | forkandale.com

When making this drink, or any craft cocktail, remember to measure according to the recipe, and you will always have consistent tasting. Fresh ice is a must! Cleaned and polished glassware is also sure to impress. Do not skip the bitters in cocktail recipes! They are vital for balancing sweetness and acidity. Most important of all, make sure to have fun as you make this cocktail or any other drinks you design.

RECIPE: That’s S’more Like It Old Fashioned INGREDIENTS - 1.5 ounces Bourbon infused with graham crackers - ½ ounce Reposado Tequila infused with cocoa nibs - ½ ounce toasted marshmallow syrup - 8 dashes chocolate bitters - Ice cubes - Marshmallows - Chocolate sauce - 1 pack graham crackers - ¼ cup organic, high-quality cocoa nibs - 2 cups water - 1 cup sugar

TOOLS NEEDED - Mixing glass - Mixing spoon - Wide-mouth jar with lid - Kitchen or bar torch - Strainer - Skewer

INSTRUCTIONS To Make Graham Cracker-Infused Bourbon Take pack of graham crackers and one 750ml bottle of your favorite Bourbon and crumble graham crackers into small pieces and soak with Bourbon in wide-mouth jar with a lid for 24-48 hours. Shake occasionally/strain through very fine mesh strainer or coffee filter. To Make Cocoa NibInfused Reposado Tequila Add ¼ cup cocoa nibs to a 750ml bottle of your favorite Reposado Tequila and sit for 24-48 hours, shaking occasionally, then strain.

To Make Toasted Marshmallow Syrup Toast a dozen marshmallows with a kitchen or bar torch or under the broiler. Take 2 cups water and 1 cup sugar — heat and dissolve water into sugar, add toasted marshmallows, stirring over medium heat until dissolved. Strain if there are any black char pieces. Put It All Together… Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass and add ice cubes and stir with mixing spoon for at least 15-20 seconds. Pour through strainer into old fashioned glass over fresh ice. If available, a large cube for serving is preferrable. Garnish with skewered toasted marshmallow, and/or chocolate sauce rim dipped in graham crumbs.

THOUGHTS FROM THE CHAMBER NEW CASTLE LAWN & LANDSCAPE

Community, Culture & Collaboration BY BELL MEDIA GROUP & GRCA MARKETING TEAM Editor’s note: The following story was written as a part of GRCA member storytelling campaign. To read the entire story behind New Castle Lawn & Landscape, scan the included Flowcode. What began as a simple way to put some extra spending money in Brian Cuccaro’s teenaged pocket has blossomed into a full-service lawn and landscaping business boasting a 9,000-square-foot warehouse and 85+ employees. But it hasn’t always been easy. New Castle Lawn & Landscape weathered some tough seasons and faced a particularly rough period in 2018 when the future of the company teetered on a mower blade’s edge. But instead of giving up, New Castle Lawn & Landscape soldiered on, leaning heavily into the elements that have brought them out on top time and time again: community, culture and collaboration. Here’s how they did it …

Under the hot summer sun of 1987, while living at his family’s home on New Castle Drive in Shillington, 14-year-old Brian Cuccaro was looking for ways to earn extra spending money. Equipped with their parents' lawn mowers and a willingness to roll up their sleeves, Brian and his childhood friend and co-founder, Bryan Weise, started knocking on doors and offering lawn mowing services to neighbors at a whopping $15 a lawn, eager to prove their worth. Their parents occasionally drove them to properties beyond walking distance until they got their driver’s licenses. The small collective of friends, spearheaded by Brian and Bryan,

officially formed in 1994 and grew into a full-fledged company over the years by expanding into new neighborhoods and launching commercial services. In 2014, Brad Stephenson took an ownership stake, and in 2022, Dan Marshall would also join the owners’ team. Among the three, they create a dynamic leadership team who knows how to get things done — but still have fun. The crew was put to the test in a big way, however, in 2018. New Castle Lawn & Landscape is a longtime provider of opportunities to individuals with green cards looking for work in the United States. That year, a team of 40 trusted, hardworking lawn specialists was fully trained from their past experience with New Castle and ready to go — except that their petition for work was denied that year for the first time ever. Everyone, from the owners to the administrative staff, was scrambling. It was an unusually wet summer, and the grass was growing like crazy. Every available employee fired up a mower as they raced to complete their contracts (although rumor has it, they took the blades off

construction expert Brad’s mower before he went out…). But when you put your business in a pressure cooker, sometimes something genius comes out the other side. The company rallied. It doubled down on process in addition to hiring and training. It cleaned up the books, installed channels for digital communication, and honored the hard work of its remaining employees. It also got creative and stepped up its community involvement. What took New Castle Lawn & Landscape almost 20 years to achieve in terms of revenue and company size doubled in the past five years alone. The company is now thriving and offers a portfolio of immaculately delivered outdoor residential and commercial services.

1 1 LAYERING THE LOOK

L O O K S

F O R

BY HEATHER BAVER

1

Layering is a way to flex your creativity while making the most of your wardrobe. Mix lighter and thicker materials to stay warm and to achieve an optimal look. Layering also enables you to enjoy your favorite pieces year round. Explore your style options with these items made to stack up.

1. STATEMENT PLAID

Go for outerwear with flair by choosing this striking plaid coat. Combine with a ribbed top for extra texture and pale pink peeking out of the notched lapel. Accessorize with a crossbody bag that matches the plaid’s chocolate-brown hue. Wear with a shirt and knee-high boots for a fashion-forward ensemble.

Bryce Plaid Coat, $239, Rose Pink Mock Neck Top, $79, Skyler Bag, $55, Bella Jules Boutique

3. CASHMERE CONFIDENCE

With its lightweight softness, cashmere will help you layer like a pro and provide a dressy feel, whether you pair it with jeans or dark pants. Coordinate this sweater with a tank underneath or top with a blazer for added warmth. Either way, the vibrant color creates a stunning look.

Preswick & Moore Luxurious 100% Cashmere Sweaters, ticketed: $100, sale: $39.99, Boscov’s

2. FRINGE FAN

2

Get scarf style in an easy-to-wear vest. Made of wool, this plaid vest can be worn as an outer or middle layer. Pair it with a longsleeve tee, leggings and boots for the ultimate autumn ensemble, or add a peacoat on top and let the fringe peek out.

Tribal Vest, NWT, size M, $42.99 (Retail $108.95), From The Heart Consignment Shop

4. POCKETS GALORE

Maximize your love of patterns and pockets. This button-down shirt comes in 15+ patterns for a multiplicity of eye-catching base layers. Top it off with a cozy vest to display the shirt’s glorious pattern. Side pockets warm your hands, and a zippered chest pocket is ideal for securing small items.

Men’s Izod Performance Stretch Plaid Sport shirt, $34.99, Izod Knit Vest, $49, Boscov’s

5. SHEER FOUNDATION

Orchestrate a warm, layered outfit with a graceful silhouette. Layer this sheer, long-sleeved top over your favorite cami and let the raised-dot pattern take center stage. Or go the opposite direction and use it as a base layer to wear with tailored vests, blazers and jackets.

6. CROSS THE SEASONS

6

Wear your favorite warmweather dress through the seasons by layering with this plaid flannel shacket. An amalgamation of a shirt and jacket, shackets are warmer than a shirt and can be worn as an outer or in-between layer. Top with a leather crossbody and fedora for a chic ensemble.

Free People On The Dot Layering Top, $40, Be Mine Boutique

7. HARMONIOUS COLLABORATION

Show off your team spirit by pairing this short-sleeve Eagles tee with a sage-green shacket. A soft waffle-weave fabric and button front make this jacket-shirt hybrid a versatile choice. Pair with comfy leggings, an oversized clutch and dramatic dangling earrings for a stylish and comfortable look.

Lily Clothing Inc. Flannel Shacket, $44, 42Pops Dress, $17, Chloe & Lex Crossbody, $59, Andrea Bijoux Camel Hat, $38, The Boutique at J. Nolan

8. GO LONG

Accentuate warmth by choosing layers with longer lengths. Like a duster cardigan, this vest extends past your knees for dramatic style. Pair it with a dress or your favorite top and jeans for a range of outfits. The soft, textured fabric will keep you snug and comfortable everywhere.

Free People Cozy Time Vest, $198, Be Mine Boutique

Puffer vests are a cold weather classic. Pair this cozy puffer with a turtleneck sweater in a timeless striped pattern. Add a cami underneath for extra warmth and combine with dark-washed denim and your favorite sneakers. Reverse the vest from gray to black to create a different look.

Savage Stripe Sweater, $79, Kansas Reversible Puffer Vest, $125, Bella Jules Boutique

10. TAKE ON TEXTURE

Enhance your outfit by incorporating texture. This jacket features fun, fuzzy details in a dynamic pattern of vertical and horizontal lines. Neutral hues make it an ideal match for tops in all colors of the rainbow. Try layering in black or white for a dazzling, all-neutral look.

Dolcezza Jacket, NWT, size L, $58.99 (Retail $124.95), From The Heart Consignment Shop

11. JAZZED UP JACKET

Corduroy is a quintessential fall fabric, and this jacket enlivens this softly textured material with a burst of color on the collar, front and bell-shaped cuffs. Wear it with a lightweight turtleneck or button-down in a color that complements the jacket’s colorful pattern — like orange, vermilion or purple.

THE GIFT OF

Giving Back

N O N P RO F IT SP OTLI GHTS

We’ve said it time and time again: our local nonprofits are the backbone of our county. They support our residents, and even animals, in need. And they do it on a shoestring budget more often than not. So why not show them some love this holiday season by purchasing something on their holiday wish list, by volunteering your time, or by providing a much-needed monetary donation? If one of the organizations on the following pages is near and dear to your heart, it surely won’t be a hard ask. But for those of you wondering how your donation might help, consider these facts! While they operate on a tight budget, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nonprofits are the country’s third largest employer. We hope you’ll support one — or more — in our community that does so much to give back already.

Sharing that you’ve donated on social media and with friends and family could inspire them to do the same. More donations = the ability for the nonprofit to do more good. You’ll be setting a great example. Want to raise compassionate children? Creating a culture of giving in your family can do just that! It’s a feel-good deed. While you may be parting with some of your hard-earned dollars, you’ll reap the reward of feeling great about where your money has gone and who or what it may help. Double duty. Does your employer match charitable contributions? If so, be sure to let them know about your donations so your money can go that much further.

That’s just what folks who call the City of Reading home and the City of Reutlingen in the southwestern German state of Baden-Württemberg home have been doing for the better part of the past three decades. For 25 years, officials in both cities have formally declared and strengthened their sisterhood — or twinning. Reading hosted a delegation from Reutlingen in March as a part of our city’s 275th anniversary celebration. (A former and future mayor from Reading, United Kingdom, our other sister — sometimes referred to as our “mother city” — were also on hand.)

In July, as one of many such exchanges since at least 1989, a five-member delegation including this article’s author, who serves as City Council president, City Councilor O. Chris Miller, Reading Area Community College Foundation and Reading Symphony Orchestra board member William Bender, the city’s 275th anniversary coordinator Laura Reppert, and Bradley Smith, archivist and assistant director of the Berks History Center, made the journey. The group found Reutlingen, its city, academic, business and cultural officials and its citizens at large very warm and welcoming.

It becam e a free imper ial city in 1208, a status it held till 180 2. Today, the distric t of Reutlingen, w it h several municipalitie s, has more th a n residents and 116,000 is n to the Swabia icknamed The Gate n Alb with th e Achalm mountain ab ove it. It is loca ted south of Stuttgart, ce ntrally in Bad enWurttemberg and central to Europe itself.

ON OUR WAY

Our group started its journey embarking from Newark International to Frankfurt am Main Airport via Icelandair. Shopping around, we found round-trip airfare including travel insurance for $1,268. Icelandair required flying into the Reykjavik International Airport and changing planes, hence the modest fare. Bonuses here: flying past the tip of Greenland approaching Iceland, observing an erupting volcano as well as the aerial view of the island nation’s stunning topography, and stepping into Iceland’s cool, fresh air after the heat and humidity of mid-July in the U.S.

Frankfurt International Airport, like Newark, is huge. Multilingual directional signage is efficient, and the terminal(s) are very attractive thanks to recent updates. From the airport, transport to the main Frankfurt rail station is pretty simple. And from there, all of Germany and beyond are affordable fares away. The trip south to Reutlingen takes about three hours. Four of us stopped in Esslingen that first night. Located about 11 miles from Stuttgart and maybe 17 from Reutlingen, it was a welcome respite after the long night/day journey. Located on the Neckar River in the Stuttgart region of Baden-Wurttemberg, it’s a smaller city that boasts a wealth of medieval half-timbered buildings in the town center that escaped significant World War II bombing. By staying in a modest hotel on Plochingerstrasse close to the rail station, those ancient buildings, a mix of retail and residential, were within easy walking distance. Even on a mid-week night, the Marketplatz was lively with diners like us savoring the beers, wine and German food specialties. With limited time the next morning, we got some good looks at nearby parks, enjoyed a lovely bakery and coffee, and tucked in another architecturally stunning walk.

RETURN TO REUTLINGEN

A 30-plus-minute train ride took us to Reutlingen, and then a quick cab ride from the rail station to the City Hotel Fortuna, a very no-frills but modern facility within walking distance of the old city and nature trails. Greeted by our friend Petra Bannasch of the Reutlingen Cultural Office and Ulrich Track, sister city coordinator, we enjoyed a refreshing outdoor lunch with Lord Mayor Thomas Keck and others at the Hotel Restaurant Achalm. The charming eatery is part of the modern, elegant hotel just below the summit topped by the 1838 tower of the Achalm sitting on the ruins of an 11th-Century

Esslingen

castle. The summit provides incredible views towards Reutlingen and the whole of the Swabian Alb. (The Berks equivalent is viewing Reading and the western expanse of the county from the Pagoda/ William Penn Fire Tower/Skyline area of Mount Penn.) Next was a guided tour of Reutlingen’s charming old city center led by Rainer Krimmel. He explained the site of the old city walls still standing after the 1726 fire that destroyed much of the town. Then, on to the town center with the stunning Marienkirche constructed between 1247 and 1343. Damaged in that fire, it was reconstructed and is a “national cultural monument.”

SHINING STONE

The cobblestoned market square, with its 1570 fountain featuring Maximilian II, Holy Roman Emperor (remember Reutlingen sits at the northern tip of that ancient empire), the Zunftbrunnen, a newer fountain which honors the economic and political groups of the guilds to the 1500s, and the Eistrum, which is one of a few remaining towers of the original walls later used as a municipal ice house, were all highlighted, as was the marker noting the birthplace of Friedrich List, the 18th century economist, entrepreneur and journalist who is the historical link between Reading and Reutlingen. Just undergoing restoration is the allimportant Tubinger Tor, a 13 th century half-timbered gate tower, the sole preserved gate of the original town wall. One attraction for the record books is the Spreuerhof-Strasse. Guinness lists it as the narrowest street in the world at 31 centimeters at its narrowest. Try squeezing through it — and make certain to breathe in!

The local history museum was a treasure, and the nearby modern city library is a hub of activity for young and old. An open-air supper in the city centre, again featuring Swabian cuisine, completed our first day.

TOURING A FAIRY TALE & A FORMAL GATHERING

Saturday started with a foray to Lichtenstein Castle. It’s a 20-minute drive south through a winding country road and charming villages. This fairy-tale castle perched on a steep cliff near Honau overlooking the Echaz Valley is sometimes referred to as the Neuschwanstein of Wurttemberg. The castle, first mentioned in the early 1200s, was destroyed and rebuilt over the centuries; the current neo-Gothic version dates to 1842. The name translates to “shining stone.” A guided tour of its fascinating and ornate interior takes about 30 minutes. Visitors can glimpse bullet holes remaining from World War II. The grounds and 360-degree views

This one was located near the headwaters of the Echaz and along footpaths used as far back as the Romans. It's difficult to describe just how delicious freshly prepared trout can be with a bit of a horseradish sauce accompaniment and Swabian side dishes like Maultaschen, Käsepätzle, Linsen and Spätzle and the fabulous potato salad.

DER READINGER ADLER

By late afternoon, we were in Reutlingen City Hall for the official 25 Jahre Stadtepartnerschaft mit Reading. The Reutlingen Jazz Duo, Clemens Wittel and Charly Heim, whose planned visit to Reading in 2020 fell victim to the pandemic, treated the packed auditorium to the sounds of Count Basie, Duke Ellington and George Gershwin. Oberburgermeister Keck and myself delivered speeches highlighting the many facets of our partnership. Councilor Miller presented proclamations from the County of Berks and the City of Reading. As Reading representatives, we were presented with a special street sign noting the partnership — and the 4,000 miles — between our cities. The sign will be sited in a public space here in Reading. The entire delegation, along with Reutlingen officials, also signed the city’s “Golden Book,” which serves as historical documentation for special events.

Among those attending was the estimable Dr. Eugen Wendler, the foremost expert on the life of Friedrich List, a son of Reutlingen and a true Renaissance man who from 1825 to 1832 secured the link between our cities. List, in addition to his huge European accomplishments, edited Der Readinger Adler (German language precursor to the Reading Eagle) and was a founder to the precursor of the Reading Railroad. It was our pleasure to present Dr. Wendler, who has visited Reading and Berks often and authored several important books and papers on List, a commemorative plate of our beloved Pagoda.

DEMOCRACY & INDEPENDENCE

Following the ceremony, it was on to the open-air preview of Sunday’s Schwortag. This “festival of democratic cheerfulness,” revived in 2005 by former Oberburgermeister Barbara Bosch, brings together thousands of townsfolk to commemorate democratic order, independence and self-determination. Full observation occurred Sunday, starting with a service at the Marienkirche. From there, a parade that wound through the heart of the town — in which the Reading delegation was invited to participate — took everyone to the outdoor celebration at a grove fronting the FriedrichList-Gymnasium (school). Keck opened the event with a lengthy speech filled with historical context — and some warnings about threats to democracy in Germany and elsewhere. He then took the annual ceremonial oath. After,

In the afternoon, it was on to the incredibly beautiful neighboring town of Tubingen and a delightful punting boat excursion on the Neckar River. The views of this flower-filled, architecturally breathtaking city are likely the finest anywhere in Germany. The extensive use of the riverfront throughout the city and the respect its natural environs are given are inspirations. Our last day was one for business and academic appointments. We began with a visit to the Johannes-Kepler Gymnasium (high school) for a tour and discussion with some amazing students. For anyone who’s traveled to Europe recently, you’ll have noted the proliferation of American professional sports apparel. A couple of the male students wore Los Angeles Lakers T-shirts. Reading’s own basketball star Lonnie Walker was a member of the team through the 2023 playoffs and that he had one particular outstanding game. When we noted that Reading is Lonnie’s hometown and that he was a state star while at Reading High, the boys were full of excited comments and questions.

the Alfredo/Alte Muhle perched on the Echaz riverbank and nature trail. Its Italian chef and his creations are legend in the city. Our last day was split between Stuttgart and Frankfurt. In Stuttgart, we were the guests of former Lord Mayor Bosch, now Honorary State Councillor for Civil Society and Citizen Participation in Baden-Wurttemberg (equivalent to a Pennsylvania cabinet position but without compensation). She secured a private tour of the Villa Reitzenstein, also known as Clay House, constructed by a Stuttgart merchant in the early 1920s and used ultimately both by generals of the Wehrmacht and after 1945 by American officers. It was returned to Germany in 2012 and now houses meeting rooms and State Ministry of Baden Wurttemberg offices, including Bosch’s. Nestled among extensive terraced gardens, it faces the Stuttgart basin and offers a fantastic view of the city from its front terrace. Another special treat was catching up with an old friend, Reading’s former deputy city clerk Chris Kanezo, a full-time Stuttgart resident now working for the US government. Incredibly, he lives just a block or so from the mansion and was excited to finally enter and tour its storied grounds and interior. Then, on by rail to Frankfurt and taking residence in a modest hotel near the huge rail station. The next morning, luggage in tow, we trekked to the train station and caught a quick ride to the airport. Flights departed on time, including the connecting ones, and we and our luggage arrived in Newark about 7 that same night filled with much joy about our days in Reutlingen. Editor’s note: Council President Donna Reed and Councilor O. Chris Miller paid their own flights and expenses on this official trip. No City of Reading funds were accessed or used.

DINING OUT

3 & Spruce Drafthaus rd

WEST READING’S LUMINOUS NEW STAR

Signature Spruce Burger BY MARIAN FRANCES WOLBERS PHOTOS BY HEIDI REUTER

Without a doubt, West Reading shines brightly in Berks County’s galaxy, with so many great places to visit — from art galleries to boutique fashion shops, not to mention cool craft beer bars and a worldly array of restaurant cuisines. Now, it’s got an all-new, wonderful remake at a location long known as a popular watering hole called 3rd & Spruce Drafthaus. 54

NOVEMBER 2023 | berkscountyliving.com

“Yes, that word drafthaus means we serve amazing drinks,” says General Manager Taylor Santiago. “But,” she adds, “you’re going to love what our chef and sous chef are making for dinner every night.” Indeed, 3rd & Spruce manages to offer not just a huge variety of beers (over 26 taps) and wines, but their extensive spirits menu lists much more under headings like Bourbon, Rye, Irish

Whiskey, Single Malt Scotch, Blended Scotch and Agave. Wow. So…how about an Espresso Martini? Love hot coffee and adore martinis? This luscious, gorgeously presented drink is a big “Oh yes!” It’s designed to melt your tastebuds with the bitter, fine-espresso-grounds edge on the glass contrasting with just-sweet liquor. Its frothy, creamy top is decorated with three teeny coffee beans.

Every bit as enticing, says Santiago, is the Lavender Cosmos or the Halle Berries Nectar. She also points to a drink that’s literally smokin’ when it arrives at the table: the Smoky Kentucky Old Fashioned. Truly top-notch. Smooth. Mellower than mellow. The scent of toasted marshmallow as a magical amber fruit swirls piquantly on the tongue and tickles your nostrils, and then whoosh! — liquid flame flows down gently.

West Reading Cheesesteak

TOP OF THE MARQUEE: WEST READING CHEESESTEAK & SIGNATURE SPRUCE BURGER

Spruce Wings

SOUPS, APPETIZERS & SMALL PLATES Clearly, a lot of thought and taste-testing went into every offering here. Even if you stop in for just a beer and finger food with friends, you’ll have appealing, fun choices. There are Wisconsin Battered Cheese Curds, Crabby Tots and Sweet Potato Fries with hot honey. Those sweet potato goodies are made waffle-style, preserving natural sweetness and crunch. Santiago mentions that the final flavors were decided collaboratively, with best taste and texture as main goals. She credits Chef Diaz (Alexander Diaz Cruz) and Sous Chef Mikey for imaginative touches inherent in every dish. Take the rich Roasted Tomato Soup, for instance: “That one has a little bit of a kick,” explains Santiago. Folks who are partial to ordering a crock of French Onion Soup will find this version overwhelmingly delicious, with subtle differences in its creation that impart a light sensation (this soup isn’t the typical heavy, toobeefy type). A Gruyere-cheesy soup with sweet onion flavor, the

crock holds a warm, satisfying broth that keeps calling you back. A totally smart choice for an early-winter night. As for an innovative, super healthy small plate, the Sauteed Brussels Sprouts have already made their mark. “They’re very popular,” nods Santiago. Here, the kitchen created a fabulous, complex version of what has become a trendy veggie in recent years. They’ve sliced and near shredded up the sprouts, adding shallots, prosciutto and garlic and making the greens musky with goat cheese while enhancing the sprouts’ natural nuttiness with sliced almonds. The dish is finished off with an umami maple balsamic reduction. Other small plates to sample: Reuben Egg Rolls and Short Rib Poutine. Spruce Wings are spot-on excellent with craft beer or any beverage. Go all in with the Spruce Sauce to dip these crispy-edged, perfectly prepared meaty morsels for flavor that’s burn-y without being killer hot.

No wonder diners love the West Reading Cheesesteak! To be clear: this version of a Pennsylvania classic is not the heavy tomato-ey type. Nor is it the Velveeta type. This is an authentically cheese-y cheesesteak on a perfectly sized warm hard roll, holding just a touch of crunchy crust. The seasoned meat and melted white cheese combine with a jazzy touch of jalapeno heat for an aromatic treat. Bite after bite, this one’s a superior food experience. Also, waving a flag that says “Favorite!” to many patrons is

the Signature Spruce Burger, and though there are loads of hamburger options to try, definitely aim at this many-layered specialty sandwich made with Snake River Farms American wagyu beef. You’ll bite down into an integrity-filled, sweet brioche bun that does its best to hold the creamy sriracha Spruce sauce dripping into the hearty wagyu, caramelized onions, juicy tomato slice and flat, green lettuce. It’s salty and spicy and saturated with good taste. This is one fine burger.

Sauteed Brussels Sprouts

PEPPERCORN STEAK BOWL & SWEINEBRATEN ARE SPECIALTY ENTREES Hungry for a large plate? Steak and mushrooms in au poivre sauce over white rice with roasted red peppers and garlic broccoli comprise the GM’s personal heartthrob: Peppercorn Steak Bowl. This well-melded combo is mind-blowing. Finally: fall-apart-tender pork is roasted for hours to

make Sweinebraten. It’s then sliced thickly and slathered with beer-mustard gravy, pickled onions and carrots. A mound of homemade mashed potatoes anchors this fulfilling meal.

HVAC Service Manager Zac Bidwell

61 YEARS IN THE HVAC BUSINESS

BLANSKI ENERGY MANAGEMENT

The Blanski family has been in the mechanical contracting business since 1962. 2023 marks the 61st year that the Blanski family has served Eastern Pennsylvania and will continue to do so in the future. The company was started by Milton Blanski and Stanley Phillips as Blanski & Phillips Mechanical, Inc. Over the years, the company has specialized in many areas, including: plumbing, industrial piping, heating, air conditioning, ductwork fabrication, HVAC service and portable boiler rentals. The key to the family’s business success has always been their commitment to providing quality service and products. In 1986, Blanski Energy Management, Inc. was formed to provide quality service for HVAC equipment and systems the company has installed. As time passed, Milton Blanski retired and handed down the company to James (Jim) Blanski, the second generation. At that point in time, Blanski Energy Management, Inc. transitioned to more of a sheet metal fabrication and installation firm and continued to service many types of HVAC systems. At this time, we are announcing the addition of our new HVAC service manager, Zac Bidwell. Zac has served in the marines, worked as a laborer, a machinist, and an HVAC apprentice starting at Rosedale Technical College through to an HVAC service technician. As our new service manager he brings new energy, logic, and experience to our service division. Blanski Energy Management has completed numerous sheet metal projects in and around the Philadelphia area since focusing on sheet metal work. Blanski worked on the Please Touch Museum, Samuel Fels High School, the Jewish National History Museum, two Swarthmore College Dormitories, Girard Music Academy, the Temple Baptist Renovation, the Temple-McGonigle

Renovation, and many more projects. Outside of Philadelphia, Blanski has completed projects at Graterford Prison’s Boiler Plant and School, the Northampton Prison Renovation, Yuengling Plant #2, Coatesville 9–10 Center, Lincoln University Science and Cultural Center, 3 Connective Power Plant Projects, and the Reproductive Science Institute’s Laboratory and Operating Rooms and WUXI clean rooms. Recently, Jim Blanski, CFO, has semi-retired and Nathan (Nate) Blanski, the third generation, is now in control of operations as president, continuing the company’s dedication to providing quality services and products. Blanski Energy Management has recently completed the following jobs: West Chester Science Building, the Philaport Vehicle Staging Center, Belmont Behavioral Hospital, Bimbo Bakeries, Solomon Solis Cohen Elementary and Valley Forge Visitor Center, among many others. Presently Blanski Energy Management is working on the Salem County Courthouse, New Jersey American Water, Chatham Elementary School, 545 N. Broad Street Apartments, and the Philadelphia Federal Building 7th/8th floor renovation. Blanski is providing and installing all of the duct systems on these projects. Through every generation of ownership, the company has continued to look out for its customers’ best interests by providing education and training with their partner, the Sheet Metal Workers Local Union No. 19, and by financially supporting their pension, health and welfare funds. In addition, they support local and national charities, including: the Olivet Boys & Girls Club, Reading Police, PA Professional Firefighters, Mary’s Shelter, Wounded Warrior Project, and many others. Blanski Energy Management gives back to the communities in which it operates and hopes for a better future for all.
