How To Maximize Fuel Economy www.aaa.com Minimize cold engine operation. To save fuel, start the engine and then drive the car normally to warm the engine to operating temperature more rapidly. Drive conservatively. Avoid "jack rabbit" starts, rapid acceleration and hard braking, which can lower fuel economy by 15 to 30 percent at highway speeds and 10 to 40 percent in stop-and-go traffic. Shift gears efficiently. If your car has a manual transmission, upshift as soon as practical. When coming to a stop, use the brakes rather than downshifting to slow the car. Anticipate road conditions. Monitor the traffic ahead and "time" stoplights to

maintain momentum and avoid unnecessary acceleration and braking. Observe speed limits. Fuel economy peaks at around 50 mph on most cars, then drops off as speeds increase. Reducing highway speeds by 5 to 10 mph can increase fuel economy 7 to 14 percent. Use cruise control. Minimizing speed fluctuations on the highway saves gas. However, never use cruise control on slippery roads as it could cause a loss of vehicle control. Use a "fast pass" on toll roads. These electronic transponders save fuel by minimizing or eliminating tollbooth slowdowns and stops. Avoid excessive idling. A car engine consumes one quarter to one half gallon of fuel per hour when idling, but a warm engine only takes around 10 seconds worth of fuel to restart. Where safe to do so, shut off your engine if you will be stopped for more than a minute. Plan your trips. Combine errands and route your travel to minimize backtracking. Electric Cars 101: What You Need to Know About EVs www.kbb.com Electric vehicles make up about 2% of the new cars on the road. Still, even 1% of the 15 million new cars and trucks sold each year is a lot of vehicles. And that figure will increase as manufacturers continue to introduce new models into the mainstream. EV- EV is the general catch-all term for an electric vehicle. Fully electric cars get all of their power from motors that use batteries charged with electricity. BEV- A BEV, or battery-powered electric vehicle, uses only its electric motor or motors for propulsion. Because they lack a traditional internal combustion engine and use no gasoline, BEVs produce no tailpipe emissions. This type of car is sometimes called an AEV, or all-electric vehicle. HEV- HEV stands for hybrid electric vehicle. An HEV is an electric car that runs on both an internal combustion engine and

an electric motor that uses energy from a battery. Hybrids use regenerative braking to store energy created when slowing the car to charge its battery. HEVs are known for their fuel economy because their reliance on battery power decreases how much gas the internal combustion engine uses. PHEV- A PHEV is a plug-in hybrid. PHEVs plug into a power outlet to charge their batteries and use a petroleum-based or alternative fuel to power the internal combustion engine. Some PHEVs can travel 40 miles or more on electric power alone, rather than a couple of miles with a standard HEV. FCEV- Fuel cell electric vehicles run on compressed hydrogen but are not widely available except in California. Filling up an FCEV is similar to fueling up a gas-powered vehicle. Due to the lack of availability of hydrogen fuel stations open to the public, it will take time for FCEVs to expand availability to other states. Many BEVs can travel more than 200 miles on a full battery charge, and the most advanced models can reach about 400 miles between charges. Both long-range and short-range EVs can perform well in start-and-stop driving during rush hour. BEVs consume significantly more of their battery at steady speeds on highways when used for more extended getaways. Hot weather and cold temperatures reduce the range of electric cars because of air conditioner and heater use. Some EV drivers worry persistently about depleting the battery without a charging station nearby. One perk of an electric vehicle is that you can plug in and recharge at home or use EV charging stations when you’re out and about. A common question from potential electric car buyers is how much does it cost to charge an EV? For charging at home, the answer requires some math and depends on several factors, primarily how much you drive and the price you pay for residential electricity. Consider this rough example. If you put 1,000 miles on your vehicle each month and pay 10 cents for each kilowatt-hour of electricity, your continued on Page 8

Electric Cars 101 continued from Page 6 at-home EV recharging bill will be $25 to $33 per month (based on the calculation of 3-4 driving miles equaling one kilowatt-hour). Even if you double your electric rate to 20 cents per kilowatt-hour, your EV recharging cost will be $50 to $66 each month. Now, look at the cost of filling a tank with gasoline. Let’s say you’re driving an economical car that has a combined average of 30 miles per gallon during a mix of city and highway driving. Using a 12-gallon tank as a reference point, you’ll have 360 miles of driving range for each fill-up. If you’re driving the same 1,000 miles per month, you’ll need to refuel at least three times each month. When the average price of gas was hovering around $3 per gallon, according to AAA, your monthly fuel expense would be about $108.

3. Rubbing Alcohol Rubbing alcohol is great for removing stains. Dab the stain with alcohol and make sure to use a die-free cloth. Do not rub, just dab. You can also use a solution of ¼ cup of rubbing alcohol to 1 liter of water to prevent frost from accumulating on your windshield in winter. If your windshield is already frosty, spray undiluted rubbing alcohol directly on the outside of windshield and watch the ice melt away! 4. Woolite Woolite works as a leather cleaner! Use a mixture of 1 part Woolite to 10 parts water to clean and condition your leather seats 5. Cornstarch To clean your car windows, use a solution of ½ cup cornstarch to 4 cups of water, spray on to your glass, wiped with a clean, die-free rag (such as a washcloth). You can also use cornstarch as a natural deodorizer on your upholstery, sprinkle on and let sit for 30 min before you vacuum. 6. Toothpaste Use toothpaste to brighten up foggy headlights. Just apply toothpaste to the clear plastic casing, and scrub with a brush. Wipe the excess away. 7. Fabric Softener Dryer Sheets Use a dryer sheet to wipe dust off of your car’s dashboard. Placing a dryer sheet in your air filter can also help keep rodents away! 8. Olive Oil After you have dusted your dashboard, you can add shine with a little olive oil. Make sure to spot test in a hidden area before you treat the whole area. Once you are sure that no discoloration will occur, apply a small amount olive oil to the dash and rub with a clean cloth. 9. Cooking Spray Cooking spray can be used to keep dirt and brake-dust off of your tires and wheels when cleaning your car. Just clean the area and spray on the cooking oil. This will make cleaning your tires easier in the future. You can also use it to remove bugs stuck to the front of your car, just spray and wipe. 10. Baking Soda What can’t baking soda do? It deodorizes, just sprinkle it on your floor mats and vacuum away for a refresher. It is also a less abrasive cleaner. Use a paste of baking soda and water to clean dirty seat belts. Apply the paste to the nylon, gently scrub, rinse, and air dry. It is important to use non-abrasive cleaners on seatbelt material so that you do not weaken theintegrity of the fabric.

Debunking Common Myths About Car Maintenance www.aaa.com Oil changes every 3,000 miles. Car batteries last 5 years. A car warranty is voided if you go somewhere other than the dealer for service. Brake fluid doesn’t need to be changed. Tires shouldn’t be replaced until the tread reaches 2/32”. Sound familiar? We’ve all heard these car maintenance tips before but are they myth or are they fact? AAA is ready to break each one down to make sure you are treating your car right. Oil Change Frequency A recent AAA survey found that 45% of people believe their oil should be changed every 3,000 miles. Myth or Fact? MYTH! Most engine oil today contains lubricants and other additives that extend the life of the oil. This means for cars 15 years or newer, oil changes are recommended at intervals of 5,000 to 7,500 miles. If you opt for full-synthetic oil, it might go as far as 15,000 miles between services.

The bottom line: always follow the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule for when to change your oil. The Life of Your Car’s Battery AAA found that 42% of people believe a car battery lasts for 5 years. Myth or Fact? MYTH! Typically, a car battery lasts between 3 – 5 years and sometimes longer but driving habits and climate are both big factors in affecting battery life. The bottom line: if your battery is approaching the three-year mark, the only way to know for sure its condition, is to get it tested. Keeping a Vehicle Warranty Valid AAA’s survey also found that 31% of people believe that in order to maintain a vehicle warranty, all service must be performed at the dealer. Myth or Fact? MYTH! Consumers can have regular maintenance and repairs done at any facility of their choice. continued on Page 11

Fuel Economy continued from Page 3 "one stop" business locations where you can do multiple tasks (banking, shopping, etc.) without extra driving. Avoid rush hour. If your employer supports "flex time" work hours, take advantage of this option to commute and run errands during offpeak traffic periods. Poorly maintained vehicles are less efficient and use more fuel. Here are some car care tips to help you get better fuel economy: • Remove unnecessary items from the vehicle. An extra 100 pounds can reduce fuel economy up to 1 percent. Note that cargo weight affects the fuel mileage of smaller vehicles more than larger ones. • Perform regular car maintenance at the intervals recommended by the vehicle manufacturer in the owner’s manual or as indicated by the in-car maintenance reminder system. • When its times for an oil change, make sure to use the proper type. Most newer cars require low-viscosity, energy-conserving, semi- or fullsynthetic oils. • Buy quality fuel. Use the gasoline grade (regular, mid-grade or premium) recommended by the car’s manufacturer, and choose Top Tier™ brands to prevent fuel system and engine deposits that reduce efficiency. • Check the tires for proper inflation at least once a month. Underinflated tires have

increased rolling resistance that reduces fuel economy. They can also overheat and blow out. • Make sure the engine air filter is clean. A dirty filter can reduce fuel economy on older carbureted cars, although it only affects maximum power output on modern fuelinjected engines. • Head to an auto repair shop for service as soon as possible if the “check engine” light comes on. This light indicates a fault that can increase exhaust emissions and decrease fuel economy. • Try to avoid the use of rooftop luggage carriers. Items transported on top of the car significantly increase aerodynamic drag, which reduces fuel economy. • Park in the shade. During the summer, heat built-up from the sun will require increased use of the air conditioning system, reducing fuelefficiency. • Use a block heater. In cold winter climates, this helps the engine reach operating temperature, where it is most fuel efficient, more quickly. • Turn off the air conditioning and roll down the windows to save fuel. This works, even at highway speeds, but the added heat and noise can be uncomfortable and increase driver fatigue. • Regularly track your car’s fuel economy. A sudden drop in mileage may indicate a need for car service.

5 Ways To Know You May Need Brake Repair

www.aaa.com 1. You apply the brakes and hear a high pitch or grinding noise. This is a strong indicator that the brakes have worn thin. 2. You apply the brakes and feel a vibration. This indicates warped brake rotors. 3. The brake pedal feels differently – either low or spongy – and takes more effort to apply. 4. You apply the parking brake, either by foot or hand, and do not feel resistance. 5. The dashboard indicator for the anti-lock braking system (ABS) is illuminated (usually yellow). The ABS prevents the wheels from locking up so you can maintain control of the vehicle during hard stops.
