Flu Shots Save Lives by MARIELLA MILLER

If there’s one universal truth about the flu, it’s this: You don’t want it. Maybe even more: You don’t want your kids to get it. The best way to avoid the misery of the influenza virus is to get vaccinated every year. It’s true for adults and for children aged six months and older. It’s bad enough when an adult gets the influenza virus but it’s even worse – life-threatening— for a child or an infant, Jennifer Janco, Chief of Pediatrics for St. Luke's University Health Network, said. There is a much higher risk that a child’s small body will encounter complications from the flu than an adult’s, she said. “I have seen flu in infants as young as 10-14

days old. It’s very serious,” Janco said, “And I have also seen healthy children, teens, die from this. Some parents have been lulled into a false sense of security.” State Rep. Mike Schlossberg (D-132) agrees with Janco. Last week the two collaborated to emphasize the message that children aged six months and older should receive an annual flu vaccine. Though parents have the right to refuse flu vaccines for their children for religious, medical and philosophical reasons, Schlossberg has introduced a bill that will eliminate the philosophical component. Not only does the vaccine protect the child who receives it, it protects everyone that child encounters, as well. Schlossberg rolled up his own sleeve this week to back up his words. He gets a flu shot every year, he said, and so do his wife and children. Influenza is not a cold, Janco explains, and children get sicker from it than adults do. Aggressive bacteria take advantage of tender tissue to cause lung infections, dehydration and other complications. Children younger than six months, those who are too young to be vaccinated, should be protected or “cocooned,” Janco said, meaning all the people around the infant – parents, siblings, grandparents, caregivers – should be vaccinated.

Falls Prevention Awareness by VICKI CROW Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries for those 65 years of age and over. Every 14 seconds, an older adult is seen in an emergency department for a fall-related injury. The chances of falling and of being seriously injured in a fall increase with age. “We can change this by bring greater attention to the many preventive measures that can be easily employed to keep our seniors safe.” In addition to the emotional and physical damage caused by a fall, it can result in debilitating injuries, such as broken hips and head trauma. More than 50 percent of older patients who survive hip fractures are discharged to a nursing home, and nearly half of these patients are still in a nursing home one year later. This year’s theme, Strong Today – Falls Free® Tomorrow, highlights the important roles professionals, older adults, caregivers, and family members play in raising awareness and preventing falls in the older adult population. “Falls are not a normal part of aging and the resulting injuries can steal quality life from seniors and their families,” said Albert Terrillion, NCOA Senior Director, Clinical Community Partnerships.

“This awareness day is an opportunity for older adults and their support communities to learn how to reduce falls risks so our seniors can stay independent for as long as possible.” Studies show that a combination of interventions can significantly reduce falls among older adults. Experts recommend: • A physical activity regimen with balance, strength training, and flexibility components. • Consulting with a health professional about getting a fall risk assessment. • Having medications reviewed periodically. • Getting eyes checked annually. • Making sure the home environment is safe and supportive. • Having an annual hearing assessment. At senior centers and other community-based organizations across the United States, programs like A Matter of Balance, Tai Chi, and Stepping On help older adults gain strength, improve balance, and build confidence to help them live healthier lives and preserve their independence. “Winter is a difficult time to collect enough blood to meet patient needs with inclement weather and seasonal illnesses reducing the number of volunteer donors that come out to give,” said Red Cross spokesperson, Colin Riccobon. “Our Leaders Save Lives program gives students an opportunity to learn valuable leadership skills and help ensure blood is available for patients in need of lifesaving transfusions by recruiting their friends and family to give blood.” The Leaders Save Lives program encourages community-minded high school and college students to host blood drives to help maintain the blood supply around the winter holidays. Blood donations made at high school, university and college blood drives account for as much as 20 percent of blood donations through the Red Cross. Around the winter holidays, when school is not in session, blood donations often decline. Students who host a drive can be eligible to win a scholarship up to $2,500 for higher education and earn a gift card. A total of six scholarships will be awarded to students who host a blood drive collecting 25 blood donations or more. All students who collect at least 25 pints at their blood drive will receive a gift card to giftcertificates.com. For more information and to register to

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) Mayoclinic.org Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that's related to changes in seasons — SAD begins and ends at about the same times every year. If you're like most people with SAD, your symptoms start in the fall and continue into the winter months, sapping your energy and making you feel moody. Less often, SAD causes depression in the spring or early summer. Treatment for SAD may include light therapy (phototherapy), psychotherapy and medications. Don't brush off that yearly feeling as simply a case of the "winter blues" or a seasonal funk that you have to tough out on your own. Take steps to keep your mood and motivation steady throughout the year. In most cases, seasonal affective disorder symptoms appear during late fall or early winter and go away during the sunnier days of spring and summer. However, some people with the opposite pattern have symptoms that begin in spring or summer. In either case, symptoms may start out mild and become more severe as the season progresses.

What Are the Symptoms of SAD During Winter? • People with SAD have many of the normal warning signs of depression, including: • Less energy • Trouble concentrating • Fatigue • Greater appetite • Increased desire to be alone • Greater need for sleep • Weight gain What Are the Symptoms of SAD During Summer? • Less appetite • Trouble sleeping • Weight loss When to see a doctor It's normal to have some days when you feel down. But if you feel down for days at a time and you can't get motivated to do activities you normally enjoy, see your doctor. This is especially important if your sleep patterns and appetite have changed or if you feel hopeless, think about suicide, or turn to alcohol for comfort or relaxation.
