Equine Therapy in the Lehigh Valley Submitted by Cheryl Baker, CEO

Equi-librium, located on Fehr Road in Nazareth, serves about 100 participants weekly in its riding and driving Equine Therapy programs. The nonprofit organization relies on community support and the strength of a great volunteer base. But the programs? They run on horsepower – the power of horses…12, to be exact. What these horses provide, six days a week, are therapeutic sessions designed to address the specific challenges and needs of each and every individual. The great part

about it is the riders don’t look at it as therapy. The demand for the programs, as well as others like it across the country, has grown tremendously in the past five years, particularly in the treatment of autism and other socialemotional and behavioral disorders such as post-traumatic stress syndrome. Therapeutic riding has proven to be very effective in many cases where traditional therapies have failed. Being on the farm, combined with the ability to bond with the horses, provide an amazing educational environment for those who may not learn as well in a traditional way. Not just any horse can be part of the Equilibrium stable. These are very special animals, with just the right disposition and the patience of saints. The horses have fairly ordinary names like Ben, Skye, Lil Bear, Buttercup and Beauty. But those names are sometimes the very first words that some non-verbal kids with autism will speak. As you can imagine, to their families, those are not ordinary names. Our “steady Eddy” horses are what we call “bomb-proof,” and they have to work hard to compensate for poor muscle tone, lack of Continued on Page 4 >>>

balance and many different rider positions -- sideways, backwards, and upside down. When a rider might be having difficulty, the horses literally don’t bat an eyelash. They understand, and wait for it to pass. They are great emotional therapists, because horses are typically nonjudgmental, have no preconceived expectations or motives, and are highly effective at mirroring the behaviors and attitudes of the humans they work with. They don’t lecture or scold! Learning to ride requires body awareness, balance, eye-hand coordination, muscle control, patience, focus and concentration. The documented physical benefits include enhanced spinal stimulation; sensory integration; motor, respirator and postural control; dexterity; coordination; endurance; fitness; and muscle strength and tone. Riding and caring for horses produces many a wide variety of essential benefits, like empowerment, motivation, problem-solving, decision-making, memory, language skills, self-esteem, self-expression, and the ability to follow direction.

Equi-librium’s horses help with language development, balance, posture, cognitive issues, behavioral issues and developmental positions. Under the guidance of our human therapists and volunteers, the threedimensional movements of the horses produce greater strength, coordination and balance. This translates to an improvement in the ability to execute some pretty essential activities of life: things like walking, talking, following directions, and learning. Taking the reins to a horse empowers, offers hope, and at the same time adds a smile to a day. All these elements add to the quality of a life. Isn’t that what we all strive for?

Paw Prints on the Canal

is scheduled for Sunday, June 7, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. along the Lehigh River in Northampton. Paw Prints on the Canal is all about families and their pets and to promote responsible pet ownership/care and education. Paw Prints on the Canal brings awareness of rescue groups (and their pets/programs) and educates specific breed standards and adoption practices. Registration fees and proceeds from the days’ event are donated to the Northampton Boro K-9 Police Unit. A primary focus of the event is providing public awareness and education of animal rescue. This annual event is dedicated to those animals in need of rescue through no fault of their own. What to do if you see a Pet in a hot car

www.humanesociety.org It may take only minutes to save a life • Leaving pets locked in cars is never safe. But when the weather gets warmer, it can be deadly. Pets can't withstand high temperatures—they can cause irreparable organ damage and even death. How to help a pet left in a hot car • Take down the car's make, model and licenseplate number. • If there are businesses nearby, notify their managers or security guards and ask them to make an announcement to find the car's owner. • If the owner can't be found, call the nonemergency number of the local police or animal control and wait by the car for them to arrive. Other ways to help • Get informed: Learn your town's laws about leaving pets in hot cars now. • Get ready to call for help: Gather the essential telephone numbers and have them on hand. You’ll want to have your local animal-control agency's number and the police department's non-emergency number so you can quickly report the situation. Keep these numbers in your purse, your car's glove compartment or programmed into your phone.

• Spread the word: Distribute The Humane Society of the United States hot car flyer, which spells out the dangers of leaving pets in parked cars. Order more flyers on animalsheltering.org. You can also watch and share our retro video on the issue. • Get involved: Ask local store managers, shopping malls, restaurants and other businesses to post signs asking customers not to leave their pets in their cars while shopping, dining or engaging in other activities. • Speak up: If your town doesn't have a law prohibiting leaving pets in parked cars, contact your local representatives or attend a town hall meeting to start lobbying for one. Learn the basics about advocating for animals with our activist toolkit. The greenhouse effect • It doesn't have to be that warm outside for a car to become dangerously hot inside. Here are some facts: • When it's 72 degrees Fahrenheit outside, the temperature inside your car can heat up to 116 degrees Fahrenheit within an hour. • When it's 80 degrees Fahrenheit outside, the temperature inside your car can heat up to 99 degrees Fahrenheit within 10 minutes. • Rolling down the windows has been shown to have little effect on the temperature inside a car.

mission is to promote domesticated pigs as pets, to provide education to pet pig owners, veterinarians, shelters and the general public, to work with animal shelters, humane societies and pet pig owners to rescue unwanted, abused or abandoned pet pigs and place them into new, loving homes. Pig Placement Network is an adoption service for pet pigs. We strive to bring together potbellied pigs and people in order to improve and enrich the lives of not only deserving pets, but their new owners as well. We are a non-profit organization that is dedicated and devoted to potbellied pigs. Adopt a Pig- Having a pig can be a very rewarding experience. Pig Placement Network strives to pair a pig with a suitable home. We can help you to decide if a pig is right for you. Pig Placement Network places pigs based on their

needs and can work with you to see what you can offer to one of our pigs. Surrender a Pig- Unfortunately, there comes a time when you may feel that having a pig is not possible. Pig Placement Network can help you to make that decision. Many times a consultation can help resolve the issues you are dealing with. If surrendering is the right choice for you, we can help place your pet pig with a suitable and loving home. Help Out- There are many ways that you can help Pig Placement Network complete its mission. Any level of assistance is very helpful. We have the need for any position from fostering to advocating for pet pigs to sending e-mails or searching for possible homes. Caring for a pet pig is not as simple as one may think. There are many considerations when caring for a pig that we often take for granted with other animals. Pig Placement Network works to provide the general public with the most acceptable and compassionate practices. Our primary concern is for the welfare of the pigs that we work tirelessly to provide the best care possible. Accordingly, the articles we promote

are those based on safe and tested methods. We work with veterinarians and other professionals who specialize in the care of pet pigs and have years of experience doing so. Topics include diet, behavior, health, environment, entertainment, safety, potty training, and the ever pervasive and mythical micro-mini-pocket-dandy-teacupnano pig phenomenon.
