Grill Potatoes For A Unique, Healthy Side Dish Potatoes are the top food eaten alongside grilled main dishes, according to the NPD Group, so why not put potatoes on the grill too? Try grilling thick potato planks, skewered potato chunks, or colorful halved fingerlings in a zesty rub like these FlameLicked Fingerlings, created by award-winning cookbook authors Karen Adler and Judith Fertig, also known as the “BBQ Queens.” “A lot of people don’t know you can grill potatoes,” said the BBQ Queens. “They’re sturdy enough to hold up well on the grill, versatile enough to grill in many different ways and the nutritional boost is a welcome addition to any meal.” In fact, one medium-size (5.3 ounce) potato has no fat, sodium or cholesterol, provides 45 percent of your daily value of vitamin C, and has more potassium than a banana. Plus, cooking potato side dishes on the grill helps to minimize clean-up, and doesn’t require the heat of an oven during the warmer months. Visit www.potatogoodness.com to find more recipe ideas for putting potatoes on the grill, including a colorful Grilled Potato Bake which incorporates multiple potato types for a flavorful side dish. You can also sign-up to receive a new recipe in your email in-box each week.

Place the potatoes in a bowl, drizzle with the olive oil and sprinkle with Spud Rub. Toss to coat. Place the potatoes on the grill rack or in grill basket directly over the heat and close the grill lid. After 3 to 4 minutes, open the lid and toss the potatoes or turn the basket. Close the lid again and repeat the process for 12 to 15 minutes or until potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork. Serving tip: Serve the grilled fingerlings on a platter alongside a bowl of Spud Rub Dip. To make Spud Rub Dip, combine 1/2 cup prepared buttermilk or ranch-style dressing and 1 teaspoon Spud Rub in small bowl. Stir to blend. Refrigerate until ready to serve. (Family Features)

Gettysburg

Gettysburg’s 150th is Gateway to Nearby Civil War Experiences This year marks the 150th anniversary of the turning point in the Civil War, the Battle of Gettysburg. As far as defining American moments go, it doesn't get much more iconic than that. Following the early July battle in 1863, the Confederate army never regained its momentum, and the bloody war ended two years later. South central Pennsylvania -- now known as the Dutch Country Roads (DCR) region -- took years to recover from its pivotal role in history, but many cultural attractions stand as reminders. There's no better way to experience the richness of the 150th Gettysburg anniversary than to visit in person. Gettysburg is bursting with re-enactments, demonstrations and new programs.

Keeping Your Pets Safe When Traveling There’s good news for pet owners who want to take their pet along on their next trip. With more pets than ever accompanying their owners on vacation, a growing number of products are available to make traveling easier for pets and people. To help, here are some tips:

Traveling With Small Pets

For those traveling by car, a versatile toploading kennel like the Petmate® 2-Door Kennel assembles easily and provides a safe place for small pets to rest while en route to any destination. When bringing a small dog or cat on a plane, remember that airlines require each pet to be contained in a carrier that meets specific criteria. For instance, the Curvations® Underseat Traveler was engineered specifically to fit into tight spaces like the underside of an airline seat and provide ample side and top ventilation.

When planning a plane trip with a large dog, remember to check with the airline for individual kennel requirements and other important specifications. The kennel you select should follow these guidelines and comply with the standards of the International Air Transport Association. One such product, the Vari Kennel®, is designed to offer comfort and safety, and comes in multiple sizes that fit pets up to 125 pounds. When hitting the road with a large dog, it’s a good idea to use a plastic kennel or barrier to keep the pet contained and out of the front seat, which causes distractions and poses a safety risk to both the pet and pet owner. And, a tubular or wire pet barrier is designed to do just that. It requires no tools to adjust and is easy to install and remove.

Other Tips

Make sure all shots, vet records and ID tag are up to date. For fun, make sure you have packed fetching toys as well as a collar and a leash to keep dogs nearby and safe. Don’t forget to include a portable waterer or travel bowl for hydration and nourishment on extended trips or outings, especially outdoors. To learn more, visit www.pet mate.com. With nearly 53 million people traveling with their pets each year, it’s important to know how to keep pets as safe as possible for both short and long trips. (NAPS)

Whether your summer plans include an exotic trip or simply enjoying sunny days with friends, it’s the perfect time to add a little fun into your beauty routine. Celebrity makeup artist Ashunta Sheriff shares her expert tips to freshen up your look.

Don the Dewy Look

Sheriff recommends cream products to achieve that dewy, healthy glow. A gorgeous peach cream blush will mimic the skin’s natural summer color – natural enough for a daytime look with the potential to make a statement for the evening.

Tips For Saving On Your Cruise Vacation

Self-tanners and body glows are the perfect way to look sun-kissed without the harmful rays. To get the best results, skin must be hair-free and smooth. Sheriff’s pick is Nair Brazilian Spa Clay Total Care Body Trio, the only 3-step depilatory system that offer professional results but at a fraction of the cost of salons. Plus it works while you shower to save time. To stay smooth even longer, try Nair wax strips for results that last up to 8 weeks. For more, visit www. NairLikeNeverBefore.com.

The nightmarish stranding of the Carnival Triumph may have deterred some potential cruisers, but so far the industry hasn’t seen enough dip in bookings to drop prices. However, savvy travelers who invest a little time and research can still save on their next cruise. To help, here are some tips from the “Like A Local” travel series by Michelin and CBS News Travel Editor Peter Greenberg.

Get a Natural Glow

Bring on the Color

This summer, Sheriff suggests a bright eye liner to bring out the color of your eyes. To get the desired effect, apply two coats along your lower lash line with a shade that complements your eyes. For example, if your eyes are brown, purple eyeliner will make your eyes pop.

Less is More

Add products to your makeup kit that do double-duty in soaring summer temperatures: an SPF foundation primer will protect against sun damage and create a sleek canvas while a tinted moisturizer will create a sheer finish. For a flawless application, Sheriff suggests using a foundation brush.

The Perfect Pout

Red lips are on trend this summer, but finding the perfect red lipstick can be a challenge for many women. Sheriff recommends a sheer red or deep wine gloss for an easy, wearable way to get the look without going too bold. With just a few expert tips in your beauty routine, you can enjoy a renewed summertime look to last all season long. (Family Features)

Look for Hidden Discounts

Several cruise lines have a “resident rate” for those who live in the same state as—or close to—a port city. For example, those living in states such as Florida and Georgia often qualify to save on cruises to the Bahamas.

Curb Your Spending

Cruise lines make their money from onboard spending, not the price of a cabin. Limit alcohol intake, skip the casinos and factor in tipping to the cruise budget. Don’t wait until the last minute to book a shore excursion. Passengers can save a bundle by booking on their own or through a third party, instead of through the cruise line. Just remember that the cruise line then has no obligation to wait for any passengers who run late on an independently booked excursion.

The Best Time to Book

Travelers who are set on a certain itinerary or want to sail on a popular cruise should book six months to a year ahead. January through March is when many people make their travel plans for the year. It’s also when cruise lines offer incentives such as 2-for1 fares, upgrades and shipboard credit on regular sailings and repositioning cruises. However, flexible travelers can get incredible deals by waiting until the last minute, usually four to six weeks before sailing. (NAPSI)
