Garden Club Spotlight Nazareth Area Garden Club

Submitted by SANDRA RINEHART The Nazareth Area Garden Club was established more than 20 years ago. We meet on the third Tuesday, March through November, at Dryland UCC on Newburg Road in Lower Nazareth Township. Programs are planned for each monthly meeting, from vegetable gardening and canning to floral arranging and crafts. There are also garden tours and nursery visits. This year our annual plant sale will be in the parking lot of the church on May 28 beginning at 9 a.m. On September 9 and 10 we will hold our 20th Annual Garden Show, featuring member designed floral arrangements, two club project plants that we will grow from May to September in identical pots, as well as hundreds of entries including house plants, vegetable and floral specimens. The show is free and open to the public. If one wants to join, membership is open to all and the cost is $20 per year. Visitors are always welcome to join us for every meeting. For additional information contact club president Donna Caldwell at 610-417-6566. Dedicated to making the path smooth for buyers and sellers. Let me help you make that move! Ann Lerch Realtor

10 Herbs to Include in a Butterfly Garden

Thespruce.com With new attention to the danger posed by some pesticides to pollinating insects like butterflies and bees, gardeners are constantly seeking ways to nurture these beneficial insects by choosing plants that attract them and provide food sources. Focus on growing herbs for your butterfly garden with brightly-colored blooms. Several common culinary herbs work well in a butterfly garden by providing both color and nectar. Butterflies love everything from dill and parsley to mint and lavender. Create an environment with shelter, sources of moisture, and a chemical-free hangout.

1. Lavender

Lavender is showy and fragrant—attractive to both insects and gardeners alike. Because there are so many varieties and colors of lavender, they are perfect choices for any garden. Lavender is best known for the oil derived from its leaves. You can grow lavender in the garden for the insects, then harvest the flower buds to enjoy Continued on Page 4

them yourself for the rest of the year. Lavender prefers hot and dry conditions with well-drained soil, but it requires good airflow and is susceptible to fungal problems in humid conditions. Lavender blooms early and continues until hard frost. Because it is especially good at attracting insects, this is a must-have herb for a butterfly garden.

2. Catnip

3. Chives

Because it is a clumping herb, chives will stay put, for the most part, only becoming rounder and more significant over the years. However, if you don't deadhead faded blooms, they can selfsow, and you could have new plants popping up in unexpected places. The fat, fluffy blossoms are irresistible to insects. Bees and butterflies are especially attracted to chives. Chives should be lifted and divided every two to three years to keep the clumps vigorously growing.

4. Fennel

Fennel is showy, growing up to 5 feet tall or more with a similar spread. Insects are drawn to it like no other herb. Take care while harvesting to avoid disturbing the caterpillars destined to become butterflies. Fennel is easy to grow, but do not grow fennel next to dill. Fennel works so well at attracting and protecting beneficial insects. Known as catnip or catmint, this herb needs to be in your butterfly garden. Butterflies are fiercely attracted to catnip. This herbaceous perennial will take over the garden if not kept contained, so plant this lovely herb in a pot and then bury the pot into the ground up to the rim. establishing maturity between 70 to 90 days after planting. Parsley is pollinated via bees and other pollinators. Its blooms are especially attractive to black swallowtail butterflies, where they commonly lay eggs.

7. Dill

Dill's feathery foliage is ornamental, making it an excellent addition to flower beds that attract pollinators and butterflies—particularly the Eastern black swallowtail. It self-sows, growing from early spring to late fall. It is a cold-hardy plant, growing quickly, with seedlings appearing in around ten days.

8. Basil

Basil plants are one of the most popular herbs to grow and one of the easiest. Sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum) is in the mint family. Its aromatic leaves come in various flavors, from sweet basil's lemony-mint flavor to cinnamon and licorice. The flower buds are also edible. Leaf colors range from rich green to deep purple, with smooth or crinkled leaves. The flowers are insignificant but very popular with bees. Butterflies also visit its blooms for high-energy, sweet nectar.

9. Mint

Mint species are hardy perennials with long stems that grow upward, flop over, and roots from where the stems touch the soil, spreading aggressively and growing quickly. Its small white, pink, or purple summer blooms flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Mint is planted in the spring after the threat of frost has passed.

10. Sage

Sage (Salvia officinalis) is one of the easiest perennial herbs to grow. Also called culinary sage, this shrub-like plant's leaves are wooly, gray-green, and aromatic, used fresh or dried in cooking. Spikes of bluish-purplish flowers appear in the summertime. Sage is pollinated primarily by bees and butterflies and is excellent at attracting these beneficial insects to the garden.

9 Types of Countertops You Should Consider for Your Next Kitchen or Bathroom Remodel Realsimple.com

1. Marble

This natural stone instantly elevates a kitchen, giving a clean, contemporary feel. There's nothing else that looks quite like a bright white marble finish, but marble countertops are available in other colors as well, including shades of gray, brown, taupe, and even green. No two marble countertops are exactly alike. This stone is certainly not the most practical choice, however. Marble is softer than other natural stones, so it's important to be careful and invest in proper cutting boards. If you cut directly on marble, it will scratch. Another issue with marble is that it's porous, so temporary spills easily become permanent stains. One unique aspect of marble is that it maintains a naturally low temperature, making it ideal for people who enjoy baking. Marble is a great surface to roll out and shape dough. This type of countertop can also be more affordable than you would assume. While marble looks upscale and sophisticated, some kinds of marble, such as Carrara, can be budget-friendly.

2. Quartz

Do you have a large family, cook a lot of meals or just want to make sure you invest in an all-around durable countertop that's built to last? Then quartz could be the best choice for you. You might be surprised to learn that quartz countertops aren't made of 100 percent quartz but rather they are a composite stone engineered from natural quartz combined with a resin binder. This

stone is also non-porous, incredibly hard, and never needs to be re-sealed. Because they're man-made, quartz countertops are a great way to get the look of natural stones like marble or granite without worrying about durability.

3. Granite

Granite countertops have been the standard for many years because it's a natural stone with great durability. Granite is available in a range of dark and light colors with all sorts of flecks and variations. Another unique feature of granite is that it can be cut with a variety of edge choices, including square, beveled, ogee (which is an S-shape), as well as half and full bullnose. Granite countertops require very little maintenance and are easy to take care of, but it's best to avoid harsh cleaning products. Getting granite clean only requires a little soap and water. Some granites are more porous than others and may require periodic sealing in order to prevent stains. Granite is heat-resistant, however, it isn't wise to cut directly on granite; this stone is so hard that it will dull your knives.

4. Concrete

Made popular by Joanna Gaines, concrete countertops are a wonderful way to elevate a farmhouse chic kitchen or add a special touch to an industrial, modern kitchen. Concrete has a really bold, striking look. It is also almost entirely indestructible, which is why they use this material to make roads and sidewalks. Commercial concrete countertops are available or if you are really skilled with DIY, you can make your own using a kit. However, keep in mind that concrete can take up to 28 days to dry completely, so it's not ideal if you're working on a tight schedule. It also needs to be sealed. But concrete is far from perfect. These countertops can crack as a home settles. The good news is that cracks are very easy to repair. But, if you insist on having a countertop that will look Pinterest-perfect for years to come, it's probably best to choose something else.

5. Butcher Block

Butcher block is an affordable alternative to stone countertops. It's made from pieces of wood that are bonded to form a larger slab. Butcher block countertops have traditionally been made from all types of wood, including cherry, maple, oak, walnut, and even teak. Which finish you choose depends entirely on the style of your home and kitchen. Butcher block is also the only type of countertop surface that allows for direct cutting and slicing, because it is essentially a giant cutting board. Butcher block countertops can be sealed or unsealed, however, once the wood is sealed, it's no longer appropriate for food prep and must be used with a separate cutting board. This material is also porous, so spills must be sopped up quickly or you risk staining the wood. Unsealed butcher block countertops must be oiled twice a year.

6. Soapstone

Soapstone is a natural stone that is domestically sourced from the Appalachian

9

Mountains, or often imported from Finland and Brazil. It has a high percentage of naturally occurring talc, which gives the surface a soap-like or soft feeling. When compared to marble and granite, soapstone has several advantages. It requires minimal maintenance and is entirely non-porous, so it is stain-, bacteria-, and heat-resistant. It also has a unique look to it and is available in a variety of gray shades with blue or green undertones. The natural, marble-like veining varies from stone to stone. While soapstone is susceptible to damage, it gives the stone an antiquelooking patina. In fact, it is recommended that homeowners oil the countertop once a month for the first year to allow the surface to oxidize and for the patina to develop.

7. Stainless Steel

This type of countertop is an instant way to give your kitchen a stylish, industrial look. Continued on Page 10

If you clean stainless steel properly, it's easy to maintain. But the longer you leave a splash or spill, the harder it becomes to clean. You can clean stainless steel countertops with a little bit of soap and water or a product formulated specifically for this surface. Stainless steel also shows fingerprints and water spots easily, so it isn't ideal for a home with young children. Another pitfall of stainless steel is that it can dent and scratch. But for the most part, stainless steel is incredibly durable and entirely non-porous.

8. Laminate

Laminate countertops, which are often called by the brand name Formica, were incredibly popular during the 80s and 90s. While older laminate countertops can look dated, the laminate countertops of today are a bit different. Newer laminates can give the look of more expensive materials

like wood and stone for a fraction of the price. This product is nonporous and won't absorb bacteria. It also never needs resealing and is easy to clean with a little bit of soap and water. However, it is easily damaged by heat. Furthermore, unlike other synthetic materials or stones, laminate won't add resale value to your home. So while it isn't ideal for large kitchen renovations, it is a great way to stay on budget for less important projects like small rental property kitchens, a basement bathroom, guesthouses, etc.

9. Tile

Tile countertops are starting to make a comeback. If you're good with DIY and need to stay on budget, tile is an option worth considering. Tiles are available in a variety of sizes and shapes from classic squares to subway tiles and even trendy hexagons in different materials, including porcelain, ceramic, and even natural stones. Granite, quartz, and marble tiles are a more affordable alternative to large slabs. While the maintenance and durability of tile depends on the material, all tile countertops have one issue in common, which is that grout lines can be a challenge to keep clean and fresh looking. So, if your kitchen countertop tends to get dirty, you may want to consider darker colored grout like gray or black. Troopers killed Line of Duty, Page 3

How to Care for Your Dutch Oven Theinspiredhome.com

If your Dutch oven is made from cast iron (most are), it might take a little longer to heat up. It is recommended that you do not “dry cook” anything in a Dutch oven; make sure to add a little liquid (oil works great!) to the bottom of the pan before cooking in it. Keep in mind, the lid is tight fitting and creates a bit of a self-basting system, trapping steam and heat, this is particularly delicious when making stews and casseroles. It’s important to develop a proper seasoning because cast iron will rust and cause food to stick when unseasoned. Brands like Le Creuset and Staub are forever-seasoned with enamel. The enamel is very durable and is even dishwasher safe. However, if your Dutch oven is made of cast iron without enamel, you will need to season the pan with fat (such as lard or oil) followed by a period of high heat (400-500 degrees). This seasoning is durable and will create a beautiful non-stick cooking surface - once done properly, the seasoning will last for a very long time. To season a cast iron Dutch oven: rub any type of oil (olive is great) or lard all over the pan, think of this as massaging the oil into the iron. Then, the pot must be heated; ideally above 400 degrees for about an hour, allow it to cool in the oven. While this is a great start to a seasoned cast iron oven, there’s no quick way to get a great seasoning. Seasoning will happen over time. Care for a Dutch oven differs greatly depending upon the seasoning of the pot. If your Dutch oven is enamel coated, the pot is incredibly durable, and is even dishwasher safe. To clean an enamel-coated Dutch

oven, use soapy water and a nylon brush to scrub away any food debris. Make sure you allow the pot to cool before washing as thermal shock can occur and damage the enamel. If your Dutch oven is seasoned with fat rather than with enamel, you should take great care in protecting the seasoning. Many manufacturers recommend only using soap as a last resort when absolutely necessary. For everyday cooking, you can simply use a spatula to scrape up any food bits, then wipe away the debris with a cloth. Salt is also a useful cleaning agent in lieu of soap! Use hot water and salt to clean the oven when necessary, but remember to never soak a cast iron Dutch oven. If you have a very stubborn mess – try cleaning the Dutch oven on the stovetop! Add about an inch of water and boil until the food softens. Use a spatula to scrape up what you can, then drain the water and use a nylon brush to finish cleaning. Whenever you use water or soap, make sure to massage a few drops of oil into the pan to protect the seasoning.

New Uses for Old Glove Fingers

Don't throw out your old work gloves. Cut the fingers off and you'll find lots of uses for them. Use them to protect the tips of chisels when you need to carry them. They're also good for softening the grip of pliers and many other applications. Need a squeegee in a hurry? Take a piece of pipe insulation and use a couple cable ties to fasten it to the back of a garden rake. Works like a charm, and you don't even have to take it off to use the rake.

for the tops of your ladders to protect your siding or walls, but why? A pair of old sneakers (who doesn't have some!) and a little duct tape will do the job just fine.

Garage Floor Dam

Garage floors are puddle prone: springtime floods, melting ice from tires, you name it. You can keep that water away from your tools and toys with a dam made of expanding foam. It sticks, it's waterproof, and you can walk or drive over it without damaging it. And come summer, it'll scrape right off.

Gentle-Grip Pliers

Here's an oldie with a twist. Use pieces of garden hose or other tubing to soften the jaws of slip-joint or other pliers so you can grip plated surfaces without damage. The twist? Size them so you can slide them up the handles to keep them handy.

band. Place the flashlight in the jaws of the pliers; then wrap a rubber band around the handles of the pliers. That’s it! Point the light wherever you need it.

PVC Sanding Files

Stick sandpaper to cutoff pieces of PVC water pipe with spray-on adhesive and you'll be able to sand concave curves to perfection. PVC pipe is labeled by inside diameter; here's an index for the outside diameter of useful pipe sizes. 1/2-in. i.d. = 7/8-in. o.d. 3/4-in. i.d. = 1-in. o.d. 1-in. i.d. = 1-1/4-in. o.d. 1-1/4-in. i.d. = 1-5/8-in. o.d. 1-1/2-in. i.d. = 1-7/8-in. o.d. To apply sandpaper to the pipe, spray both the paper and the pipe with a generous layer of adhesive. Let both surfaces dry several minutes before joining them. Use two grits on each pipe—80-grit for sculpting a precise radius, and 100- or 120-grit for finish sanding. When the sandpaper's worn out, just pull it off, spray fresh adhesive on

a new strip and go back to having fun.

No-Ladder Gutter Cleaner

This gutter cleaner is inexpensive, takes about 10 minutes to make and will help you avoid ladder climbing. Buy 3/4-in. PVC pipe, two elbows, a garden hose coupling and a cap at a local home center. Drill 1/16-in. holes in the cap as shown. Make the handle long enough to comfortably reach your gutters, and cement the parts together with PVC glue.

Fastener Trough

Cut a 2-ft. length of 4-in. PVC pipe lengthwise with a scroll saw, creating a trough that’s a little more than half the pipe’s diameter. Glue or screw in 1/2-in. thick wood partitions to create compartments for often-used screw and nail sizes. To make it tip-proof, trace the pipe’s curve on a couple of scrap 2×4 blocks, power-sand or saw out the curve, and screw the pipe on this scrap block base.

Use a Sneaker to Clean Sandpaper

Make sandpaper nearly new again with a lowly old sneaker. Start up your power sander and dust collection system (remember to wear hearing and eye protection). Then slowly press the rubber sole of an old sneaker along the sandpaper—you'll see a difference instantly!

Hammer Cushion

A rubber chair leg cap instantly converts a hammer into a rubber mallet. And if you want to drive a nail without denting the surrounding wood, cut a hole in the rubber cap. Pound until the rubber strikes wood, then finish driving the nail with a nail

set. A 1-1/8-in. rubber cap fits tightly over most hammers and costs about $1 at home centers and hardware stores.

Bobby Pin Nail Holder

There's no need to risk hammering a finger when working with tiny nails or in tight quarters. A common bobby pin makes a great nail holder—and keeps your fingers at a safe distance! Once the nail is started, remove the bobby pin and continue hammering away.

Wine Cork Caulk Saver

Synthetic wine corks are great for sealing partially used tubes of caulk. Drill a 5/16-in. hole into the cork about 1 in. deep. The cork fits perfectly and makes an airtight seal.

Mulch Tips and Tricks Familyhandyman.com

Calculating How Much Mulch You Need

You can easily calculate how much mulch you’ll need by multiplying the length and width of the garden bed (in feet) and dividing the result by three. This will give you the volume you need in cubic feet (cu. ft.) to cover a bed four inches deep. The volume of mulch in a bag will be printed on the label. You’ll be surprised by how many bags you’ll need. A medium-size SUV can hold about a cubic yard (27 cu. ft.), or about 14 bags. When spread four inches deep, that much covers a bit more than a 7-ft. x 11-ft. rectangle. A big garden takes a lot. Consider delivery or bulk (dumped, not bagged) for large areas.

Which Mulch Keeps Its Color Longest?

Most natural organic mulches turn gray in about a year, depending on the amount of sunlight that hits them. However, if you want more color to accent your plants and flowers, buy custom-colored organic mulches. They’re processed with vegetable dyes in several colors. Expect the color to last for two to three years. Bright colors like red might run during a hard rain, but the color should wash off nearby walks. Colored mulches also tend Continued on Page 17

to have finer textures, a characteristic that helps them mat together and stay in place on slopes. Ask for colored mulch at your local nursery. Stone mulches also come in various colors, depending on the rock types available. The colors won’t fade, but lightercolored rock may need periodic cleaning to keep it looking fresh.

Mulch Wide, But Not Deep

Mulch holds moisture, moderates soil temperatures, reduces competition from grass and weeds and prevents lawn mowers and trimmers from nicking the trunk. Mulch also insulates the ground, keeping it cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Put Your Old Containers to Work Again Do you have old planters or baskets that no longer hold plants? Storing them is a good idea, but why not put them to work too? Put common shed goods in them — extra mulch or potting soil, bird seed, fertilizer, packets of garden seeds and more.

More Free Mulch

Store-bought mulch has its place — it looks great up close by the front door where you can see it — but it’s a money drainer. Most municipalities offer free wood chips for the taking. If not, call a tree service in your area and ask if you can have some of theirs. Most will happily oblige. Some may even deliver it if they’re grinding a tree in your area. You can also save money gardening by buying mulch in bulk.

Keep Mulch Away From Your Home

While you can’t entirely prevent a termite

17

infestation, avoiding keeping piles of wood or mulch around your home could help reduce the risk. For termites, it’s an easy trip from mulch to siding and internal wood. Don’t give them any “springboards” into your house. Keep all piles at least 20 feet away from your home whenever possible. This is one of the quickest DIY termite control methods you can employ.

Easier Mulch Unloading

If you drive a pickup truck, the mulch you buy in bulk probably gets dumped into the bed with a front-end loader. You could shovel the mulch onto your driveway and haul it from there to where you needed it. But here’s a much easier method. Load the pickup bed with five-gallon plastic buckets, then have the mulch dumped into the truck as usual. Use a rake to even out the load so every container is filled. When it’s time to unload, do it one bucket at a time and dump the mulch exactly where you want it. Store the buckets in the garage and use them throughout the year for all sorts of projects.

a paper towel tube. The tube will keep it dry in a cedar chest or plastic container. You can even label the outside of the tube with what’s inside.

2. Make A Knife Sheath

Protect your kitchen workhorse when moving or traveling with a paper towel tube. Just trim the tube so it’s about an inch or two longer than the blade. Then, place the knife inside and fold the overhang of the tube over on the long and top sides. Secure with tape.

3. Turn Them Into Stamps

Pass an afternoon with the kids by making these simple art stamps. Just pinch the ends of a cardboard tube into a shape like a heart, oval, or make cutouts in the cardboard for a funky design. Stamp onto Kraft paper for a DIY wrapping paper design.

4. Contain Those Pesky Cords

Cords are one of the most annoying items to keep neat but a cardboard tube can help.

Just fold a phone charger or HDMI cord into a neat stack and then place inside a toilet paper tube. Label the outside with the cord’s function and store in a bin for easy access.

5. Craft A Diy Birdfeeder

Cover a tube in peanut butter and roll in raw, salt-free seeds or nuts (check online for what your local birds prefer). Place the tube over a branch and watch birds enjoy a snack.

How To Choose Interior Paint

Continued from Page 18 scenarios, only then do you know you have a winner. Brush Samples Right on the Wall If the walls you're painting are plaster, have any texture to them, or are covered in wood paneling or intricate molding, it's a good idea to brush a paint sample directly onto the surface. Textured surfaces reflect light differently than smooth ones, changing how the color is perceived. If you have a new home with perfectly smooth walls, painting a sample on a board that you can move from room to room should work, but if you have older walls with lots of texture, painting directly on them is the way to go. Find the Right Finish Once you know what color you want, there's still one more decision to make: what finish to get. In general, the higher the sheen, the more durable and easy-to-clean the painted surface will be. However, high gloss surfaces show dirt. To find a happy

medium, opt for an eggshell or satin finish on most interior walls. Semi-gloss is the goto on trim and baseboards, since they face a lot of wear and tear. Measure How Much Paint You Need Sure, you can probably take an estimated guess whether you need one gallon or two, but if you want to avoid another trip to the paint store, measuring the room beforehand can help. Using a paint calculator, enter the height and length of each wall in the room, plus how many doors and windows there are. The tool will calculate exactly how many gallons you'll need to buy. You'll thank yourself later when you don't have to run out to the store covered in paint. Decide if You Need Primer Not every paint project necessitates primer, but if you're going from a dark color to a light color, it's a good idea. Primer works to cover the original color more effectively than paint, so you won't have to roll on five coats. If you're painting kitchen cabinets or a piece of furniture, primer can help the paint adhere to the surface, preventing chips and scratches later.
