Happy 2024! We hope you’ve kicked off the year on a positive note and are thrilled you’re doing it with Berks County Living in hand (or online). We’re getting started with our annual Weddings issue, and this one is especially near and dear to my heart as my own wedding is featured. While getting married at the age of 47 is a bit daunting, and not necessarily the norm, it sure is rewarding and was a day I’ll forever hold close to my heart. To the other two couples featured — starting on page 20 — huge congratulations are in order for making it through the planning stages and to the Big Day, and cheers to a wonderful life ahead. For those who may be in the wedding planning stages, or if you know someone who is, you may want to flip to our handy reception guide, starting on page 26. Also in this month’s issue, we feature another love of mine: breakfast. They sure do it right at Annamarie’s on Main in Birdsboro. Whether you love good ol’ bacon and eggs or fluffy blueberry pancakes (like I do), it’s absolutely a must-visit. Learn more in our Dining Out feature on page 38. Looking to do a bit of redecorating at home? Perhaps you’d like to go hygge. We delve into just what it entails in our Living In Style article on page 32. Here’s to a wonderful year ahead!

Biscotti Fans Should Visit Sinking Spring Shop Anita Skrocki started baking when she was 12 years old. Years later, when she was a stay-at-home mom to four young children, her baking hobby became increasingly serious, eventually growing into a business: Anita’s Biscotti Café & Bakery in Sinking Spring. The cozy little shop offers 40 flavors in the cafe, ranging from traditional anise to espresso chocolate chunk, and a seasonal favorite — gingerbread. “Our biscotti are made with quality ingredients, offering a homemade product and authentic taste in one. The passion we pour into making and creating each flavor shows. Each batch of biscotti, from start to finish, takes about two hours to make. We love what we do,” says Skrocki. Anita’s also offers online ordering. Some of the items include biscotti bride & groom wedding favors, baby shower favors, Verse-ScottiTM and biscotti trays for family gatherings. The cafe serves specialty coffee and other drinks along with a variety of sweet treats. Visit anitas-biscottis.com or visit at 3001 Shillington Road to try a free sample. – SARAH MIES

Did you know that olive oil is the most adulterated food in the world? This means the search for true, authentic olive oil is difficult. But Berks Countians can count themselves as lucky because we have Cicco’s Olives right in our backyard. The business sells authentic, award-winning Italian olive oil that is unlike any you have tasted before. The flavor is rich and buttery, and it looks like liquid gold. While Cicco’s Olives is owned by Laura Pugliano and her husband, Pino, the family business expands halfway across the globe. In Vena Di Maida, Italy, Pino’s family has a farm where they grow olives and produce real olive oil. “It is very rare for one family to be the farmers, producers, exporters, importers, retailers and brand owners of a business, but we are,” Laura says. Because this oil is fully authentic, it is healthy and pure. Support a family business and take your tastebuds on a vacation with Ciccio’s Olives. Visit online at cicciosolives.com. – SARAH MIES

LED LIGHT THERAPY IS IN BERKS COUNTY BY SARAH MATARELLA PHOTOS COURTESY BAJA BEACH TANNING CLUB While wellness products, techniques and technology take turns in the spotlight, it’s hard to compete with the research backing LED Light Therapy. According to Cleveland Clinic, NASA began researching LED’s effects in promoting wound healing in astronauts by helping cells and tissues grow. Following NASA’s 2022 study that demystified medical uses of light, LED Light Therapy grew 48 percent over the past year, putting it at a current volume of approximately 107K searches per month according to Glimpse. Although the recent surge in interest, Berks County’s Baja Beach Tanning Club added LED Light Therapy to its service arsenal more than a decade ago in 2010. Owner Bridget Coe shares that red light stimulates the skin to produce collagen and can improve its appearance and

“ “...it has been shown to help with pain relief, detoxification, weight loss, muscle recovery, better circulatory health, better sleep, better mood, and the list goes on.”

texture while blue light kills acne-causing bacteria, shrinks pores and improves the skin’s texture and tone. Baja Beach’s facial unit, available at every location, combines the use of red and blue LED lights. LED Light Therapy contributes to both wellness and aesthetics without the risks, costs and, at times, toxicity associated with plastic surgery and other wellness services and products. Baja Beach houses two full-body red LED light therapy beds and two infrared cocoon wellness

pods at each location. The fullbody red LED light therapy bed is designed to assist customers with stretch marks, scarring, cellulite and skin imperfections by stimulating the production of two different kinds of proteins that work together as the key components of the skin’s connective tissues: collagen and elastin. Infrared light, however, penetrates through the skin all the way to the bone according to Coe. “With infrared light, there's no tanning, and it's not UV at all, but it has been shown to help with pain relief, detoxification, weight

loss, muscle recovery, better circulatory health, better sleep, better mood, and the list goes on,” she says. “Infrared light has so many different benefits.” Baja Beach’s Training and Development Leader, Angela Himmelberger, says her son used the pod for a whole week during his ice hockey camp and looked forward to going there every day for a half-hour. “He listened to Netflix, and he loved it. We definitely saw the benefits of being able to have less muscle soreness the next day. He had a little bit more flexibility and overall a faster recovery,” says Himmelberger. Baja Beach experienced an uptick in customers utilizing this service due to the expanded research, the virality of the service on social media and the fact that LED light therapies are safe for children, adults and elders. The company is embracing this wellness shift and offers LED Light Therapies in its tiered packages that can be used with or without tanning and salon services. There are also plans in place to expand wellness services as a part of its rebrand. “Health and wellness are an investment, and we're able to expand access to these services with our price points unlike other doctor's offices and high-end spas. It’s not just about the services we offer; it’s about convenience through having locations in all of the corners of Berks County and how you feel when you come to our salon and when you leave our salon,” says Coe.

Fun Facts Higher Body Temperature Yields Benefits. The cocoon wellness pods reach 190 degrees Fahrenheit and immerse the entire body except for the head to allow the internal body temperature to rise to that same temperature.

Low Risk, High Reward. LED light therapy lacks adverse side effects and is painless. Clients tend to find the treatment relaxing and experience visual and physical results in one to three months.

Suzannah Beltz OWNER, FRESH CAKE BY SUZY BY SARAH MATARELLA | PHOTO BY JOHN A. SECOGES, SECOGES PHOTOGRAPHICS

Former financial advisor, Suzannah Beltz, MBA, owner of Fresh Cake by Suzy, was keen on baking from a young age. It was when she had her two children, quit her job and moved to Berks County that her passion turned into a full-fledged micro bakery during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Q:

What is your signature technique?

I use Swiss meringue buttercream. I also only bake per order so it's super fresh that week or a couple of days before they pick it up. Another thing that I do is use high-quality and local ingredients without preservatives and avoid using anything artificial. I do use food coloring in my decorations when necessary, but I really try to avoid food coloring in my cakes overall.

Q:

What do you enjoy doing for fun in Berks County?

My kids and I like to go to Nolde Forest and Blue Marsh. We walk on the Wyomissing trail system almost every day. I also like to read and take baths to lower stress levels. And believe it or not, I still bake for fun even though it's my job. I will still bake with my kids on Sundays like I did with my mom.

Q:

Q:

What is your first memory of baking that you can recall?

I have been baking basically my whole life. My mom was a homemaker, and I would love to be in the kitchen with her. She would bake her own bread and grind her own wheat and was kind of hardcore in that way. Everything was always made from scratch, and we had a wood-burning stove. I have a scar on my thumb from flipping pancakes on our stove when I was about six years old.

10

JANUARY 2024 | berkscountyliving.com

Q:

When did you establish your business in Berks County?

We moved to Wyomissing in December 2020 because my husband, Ben Reffie, has been working for Penske for 11 years, and we wanted to move closer to his job. It was a ghost town in the neighborhood because everyone was inside, and it was winter. So, what I did was I baked little mini cakes, and we took them door to door with our masks on. My whole family and I went in the dark in the evening and knocked on all of our neighbors' doors so I could give them a little cake for a Christmas present and to introduce us. Then, my very

first cake order from here was from my neighbor for her son's birthday in January, and she told all of her friends. Suddenly, I was getting order after order… it really just took off.

Who inspires you in the baking industry?

Sugar flower artist Maggie Austen, @maggieaustencake on Instagram. I'm focusing on wedding cakes a lot more, and I am planning on going to her sugar flower workshop at some point this year to learn from her. She mostly teaches, but for her to make a cake, it takes about four months to make all the flowers because they are super intricate. The flowers are true to the species of flower. Her work is just incredible, and she makes cakes for royalty and celebrities.

Learn More Love is in the air. Suzy’s books are open for 2025 wedding cakes and 2024 Valentine’s Day boxes for your special someone including a mini cake, macarons and a cookie assortment.

CLEANING TASKS TO TACKLE IN 5, 10 & 15+ MINUTES BY SARAH MIES

We all have a lot on our plate. In the winter months, especially during the holiday season, it is easy for housework to fall by the wayside. In an effort to help get back on track without becoming overwhelmed, we’ve got some quick tasks you can work into your busy life to keep your home in tip-top shape.

5min. Clear the clutter.

10min. Out with the old.

It takes just a few minutes to go through your living area and organize the clutter that has found a home on your surfaces. Put the book back on the shelf; take the empty glasses back into the kitchen and hang your keys back on the hook. Quickly putting things back in their place can make your space look much more organized.

Leftovers, old produce and empty condiment containers can really take up space in your fridge. Go through it and throw away anything old. Give the shelves a quick wipe and then load it back up with all the good, fresh food you still have. The next time you reach for a snack, you will be relieved to be looking through a clean, organized refrigerator.

The quick switch.

Wipe it all away.

Washing all your bedding can be a hassle. Keep a clean set of sheets on hand and slip them onto your bed when it needs a little refresh. This is an easy way to make your space feel clean in just a few minutes. You can tackle the wash later.

Load the dishwasher.

Before you toss everything in the sink to tackle later and call it a night, rinse off your dinner dishes and put them away in the dishwasher. If it's full, go ahead and hit start!

Grab a pack of disinfecting wipes and take a trip around your house, swiping all the surfaces that are touched frequently. This might include doorknobs, the television remote, tabletops, counters and sinks. Each room will feel fresh and clean, and your surfaces will shine.

The window wash.

The glass on your windows can easily get smudged, dirty or foggy. While you may not realize it, the buildup may be decreasing the amount of light coming into your home. If you do not have any glass cleaner on hand, you can make your own solution by combining water and vinegar. Be sure to use a microfiber cloth when cleaning so as to not scratch the glass.

15min. Make the floors sparkle.

Floors are often the first thing to get dirty in a house. Between footprints, pet hair and tumbling crumbs, it’s a surface that’s hard to keep clean. Take it one room at a time. If there is carpet, start with a vacuum, then consider shampooing it. For tile floors, fill a bucket with hot water, vinegar and dish soap and mop with this solution to really break through the grime. Hardwood floors are more delicate; dry mopping is the best option. If you need a deeper clean on your hardwood floors, special cleaning solutions are available that will not ruin them.

The digital declutter.

While keeping your physical space clean is important, we often overlook the clutter on our laptops and phones. Take the time to delete old files, pictures and applications. Reorganize the homepage on your phone and laptop to have everything you need front and center. You will love the feeling of getting work done in an organized digital environment.

THOUGHTS FROM THE CHAMBER

A.D. Moyer Lumber STARTED WITH A ROLLER COASTER BY BELL MEDIA GROUP & GRCA MARKETING TEAM Editor’s note: The following story was written as a part of GRCA's member storytelling campaign. To read the entire story behind A.D. Moyer Lumber, scan the included Flowcode.

In the 1920s, Sanatoga Park was the bees' knees. Owned and operated by the Pottstown Passenger Railway, the attraction served as a destination site and incentivized people to ride the adjacent trolleys. Visitors enjoyed a bustling midway, highwire acts, bumper cars and a dance pavilion that attracted as many as 1,000 dancers on a Saturday night — all set against the backdrop of rolling Pennsylvania hills and a beautiful lake. But the star of the show was the Alpine Dips, a mile-long wooden

roller coaster that dominated the hillside — one of the first of its kind in the county. By the mid-1930s, however, interest in Sanatoga Park began to decline. The world was changing, and the owners weren’t able to keep the park afloat. The Alpine Dips, an investment that had cost the original owners upwards of $100,000 to build, was up for sale — for what end purpose, no one was exactly sure. Then Amandus D. Moyer stepped up to the plate.

A self-described member of a tribe he deemed “the last of the all-around men,” Moyer was a multifaceted man with eclectic talents. Rumor has it that he was constantly on the move and rarely sat still. In his younger days, Moyer dabbled in photography, mechanics, shoeing horses and even making caskets. His internal motivations behind the purchase have been lost to history; living family members today aren’t sure exactly why Moyer chose to tackle the opportunity, although they’re very glad he did. In 1938, Moyer began dismantling the roller coaster by hand, piece by piece. He then hauled the lumber from the deflated Sanatoga Park in Pottstown to his home in Gilbertsville and began selling it out of his house. The supply from the Alpine Dips wouldn’t last forever, of course, so Moyer began sourcing wood and lumber from other locations as demand continued to grow. He slowly added staff members and created a

name for himself and his business; and in 1939, A.D. Moyer Lumber was officially born. Today, A.D. Moyer Lumber is run by its fourth generation of family members. The Moyer family reinvented the business throughout the decades, surviving wars, uncertainty, culture shifts and the technological boom. The organization is a living lesson of what happens when ingenuity meets ambition and just how far those ripple effects can go.

Upcoming Event Join GRCA for its Breakfast4Success as it welcomes all four of Berks County’s female college presidents on Feb. 7 from 7:30 to 9:30am at the DoubleTree by Hilton Reading.

JUST MARRIED

NIKKI RYAN

&

MAY 6, 202 3

READING PUBLIC MUSEUM

Tell us about the proposal!

Photos by Carrie Kizuka Photography

How They Met

It should have been so many other ways, but Nikki and Ryan met on Tinder. You see, they went to the same college (Kutztown University) and even had the same major — but were four years apart. They then went on to work for the same newspaper group but in different offices: one in Hamburg and Kutztown, the other in Boyertown. The two finally connected online and had their first date at the West Reading Tavern. 20

JANUARY 2024 | berkscountyliving.com

After two years of dating, Ryan accompanied Nikki on a workrelated trip for a travel article on The Ivy, a fabulous, all-inclusive hotel in Baltimore, MD. While Nikki was at the spa for a planned massage, Ryan declared he was going to take a nap in the suite. Upon returning, Nikki walked into the living portion to see the double doors to the bedroom closed and didn’t want to interrupt Ryan resting, but they were already running behind for a planned lunch. So, she opened them, and there he was, on one knee, ring in hand. “I was completely shocked and of course said yes,” says Nikki. Side note: she was beyond impressed with the rose gold pear-shaped engagement ring he selected for her.

The Big Day

You might say the pair’s wedding was a big Berks County, and Berks County Living, affair. On a perfect 70-degree, sunny day in the Reading Public Museum’s Trudy’s Garden, Nikki was escorted down the aisle by her father, Herbert Murry, to the

tune of Stand By Me as performed by Florence & The Machine, following her sister, Kelley Murry, to the alter to meet Ryan. Absent, but there in spirit, were her mother, Carole Murry, and Ryan’s mother, Lee Yohn. Also present were Ryan’s father, Glenn Gray, and his brother, Adam Gray. They wrote their own vows and were wed by Berks County Living publisher and friend, Robyn L. Jones, who was ordained especially for the ceremony. Following the ceremony, the newlyweds and guests enjoyed a

reception catered by Devour Catering and Event Design, Oley, in the Stone Terrace Tent. Hors d’oeuvres included candied bacon, caprese skewers, pierogies, shepherd’s pie cups and raspberry and brie puffs. Dinner was a stationed meal including lemon garlic chicken and carved flank steak with au jus. A beautiful cake adorned with flowers from event florist The Rustic Bunch, Fleetwood, was created by Fresh Cake by Suzy, Wyomissing. The three-tiered masterpiece included layers of chocolate/peanut butter, banana dulce de leche and strawberry on top. Special nods were given to the couple's French Bulldogs at the event on the cake topper, on take-home treat bags and on the bar sign, crafted by Rubi and Lib Design Studio, Reading. Their first dance was to Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours) by Rufus Wainwright.

Highlight for the Bride

Says Nikki, “Ryan’s vows had me in tears. He was nervous about whether or not they would match up to mine, being a writer, but he has a writing background as well, and it showed. More than that, though, I was touched at the sentiment of them. They clearly showed he cherished the many moments we’ve spent together and that he looked forward to the ones yet to come. Others commented on just how wonderful they were, too.”

Highlight for the Groom

Says Ryan, “The highlight for me occurred during pre-ceremony pictures. The photographer had

Nikki approach me from behind for a first-look picture. I turned around, and there she was, stunning in the dress I'd been imagining for months. I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her, and in that moment the rest of my life was beginning.”

The Honeymoon

The Hamburg-based couple enjoyed a week in South Carolina — three nights in historic Charleston and three more in the Isle of Palms in an oceanfront room. They visited sites like the famed Pineapple Fountain and Rainbow Row and dined on wonderful food from the likes of Halls Chophouse. In Isle of Palms, they relaxed on the beach and jaunted to daily breakfasts and a quaint nearby café. The final night of their honeymoon, they stayed in Baltimore and took in an Orioles/Pirates baseball game.

Future Plans

Nikki, Editor-In-Chief for Berks County Living, and Ryan, employed with Allied Wire and Cable in Collegeville, are enjoying an empty nester life of sorts as Nikki’s son, Riley, recently graduated from high school shortly after the pair wed. They share their home with their two French Bulldogs, Shelly and Figgy, a rescued tabby cat named Tibby and an axolotl named Tyrone.

JUST MARRIED

ALLEN COLLIN

&

APRIL 15, 202 3

GOGGLEWORKS CENTER FOR THE ARTS

Photos by Creative Focus Photography

How They Met

The Internet brought Allen and Collin together, and their first date was a meet-up for drinks at The Ugly Oyster in Reading. After a quick two months of dating, the pair took the leap and moved in together. Allen’s down-to-earth, calm demeanor collided with Collin’s care-free, extroverted lifestyle, and they found balance as a couple. Says Allen, “We like to compare our relationship to a yin-yang.”

Tell us about the proposal!

Being that Collin’s favorite first lady is Jackie Kennedy, Allen looked up how and where John F. Kennedy proposed to Jackie, which was at a small restaurant in the Georgetown area of Washington, DC called Martin’s Tavern. On March 5, 2021, the pair was seated at that same spot where JFK and Jacqueline were years before, enjoying an amazing dinner. When dessert arrived, Allen proposed to Collin with a beautiful sunset orange-colored 22

padparadscha-sapphire-anddiamond ring. The restaurant staff and guests clapped when Collin answered “yes,” and Allen soon had a blue-green mermaid sapphireand-diamond engagement ring on his finger in a matching style.

The Big Day

The pair were born and raised in Berks County, and they were looking for a venue that would allow for their creativity and that would not tie them down to a strict list of vendors. Therefore, the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts was a perfect fit. In attendance among the approximately 120 guests were Allen’s parents, Allen and Dawn Liszcz, as well as Lisa and Dr. Jeffrey Nemeroff, mother and stepfather of Collin, and Brian Adam and Steward Willman, father and stepfather to Collin. Donielle Barlan was Maid of Honor; Lindsay Lessie was Groomswoman; Ruby Nemeroff was Groomsperson, and Bismark, the couple’s dog, served as Ringbearer. Also in attendance was Rose Willman, Collin’s stepgrandmother, and Nicholas Willman,

song as played by their DJ from Collin’s step-cousin. The couple The Party People. appreciated the venue’s industrial feel as it, as well as Collin’s suit, was a nod to London’s industrial Highlight for Allen past. The pair’s grandparents and “For me, the highlight of the big parents walked down the aisle to day was watching my future start the procession. Allen walked husband walk down the aisle down with his parents on each arm toward me and being able to to the tune of A Thousand Years see him happy and smiling.” performed by a solo violinist, and Collin was escorted by his younger Highlight for Collin sibling, Ruby, to Simply the Best, a “I’d say watching everyone nod to his favorite show, Schitt’s Creek. enjoying our day with us The venue and reception was the highlight for me.” carried the theme of “An Evening in Phuket” — dark wooden chairs and tables, lush tropical greenery, vibrant and exotic, colorful flowers, and an Asian fusion-inspired menu by Table 13 Catering, Robesonia. Collin was inspired by the film Crazy Rich Asians. The cake, baked by Unique Desserts by Chef Anne Louise in West Reading, consisted of three tiers. The bottom was lemon cake with strawberry filling; the middle was lemon cake with a passionfruit mango filling, and the top was solely lemon cake. Allen and Collin chose Lover by Taylor Swift as their first-dance

The Honeymoon

The couple enjoyed a 16-day honeymoon with seven nights in Phuket, Thailand, a 24-hour layover in Dubai and seven nights in London, England. In Thailand they enjoyed highlights like holding an eagle on their arms and petting a tiger, touring the Big Buddha, snorkeling in a clear ocean and waking up to the rainforest sounds around their villa. In London, they indulged in food at local pubs and at a Gordon Ramsey-owned spot for wagyu steak, visited Alexander McQueen’s store and museum, viewed local architecture that dates back hundreds of years and more.

Advice for Future Couples Planning Their Big Day

Hire a month-of, or a day-of, coordinator. The stress of planning a wedding is overwhelming. Our month-of coordinator kept us on track. She also was able to take care of many details leading up to the wedding, the wedding itself and the cleanup. A good coordinator and planner can take care of the stress on the wedding day. It is well worth the price to have them.

JUST MARRIED before the dinner entrees of seared chicken breast, pan-seared salmon and penne vodka. The wedding cake, created by Fresh Cake by Suzy, Wyomissing, was beautiful and had a lemon/blueberry flavor. More sweets were enjoyed at a dessert table featuring cupcakes in the same flavor as well as chocolate peanut butter and gluten-free vanilla varieties and raspberry and key lime tarts. The signature cocktail was fittingly blueberry vodka lemonade. Berks-based The Uptown Band provided music, and the couple danced their first dance as newlyweds to Can’t Help Falling in Love by Elvis. For fun, those in attendance could also grab souvenir take-home photos at the photo booth by High Times Photo Booth, also based in Berks.

Highlight for the Bride

Each spent most of their summer weekends there with friends and family. It was when those two groups connected that Ally and Sam hit it off at the Princeton in Avalon.

Tell us about the proposal!

Photos by Chris Sponagle Photography

How They Met

You might think Ally & Sam were high school sweethearts, but alas, such is not the case. While both were born and raised in Berks County, growing up in Sinking Spring and attending Wilson School District, they merely passed each other in the hallways for a couple of years, Sam being two years older. The pair truly connected at their favorite place: the Jersey Shore. 24

JANUARY 2024 | berkscountyliving.com

Four years into their courtship, while on the beach in Stone Harbor, NJ for a “beach happy hour,” Sam’s aunt gathered everyone for family photos. It was a ruse that resulted in a surprise proposal. Says Ally, “The best part was we got to spend the rest of the evening celebrating with family.”

The Big Day

It was a no-brainer for the two to celebrate in Berks County, and after touring venues, they fell in love with Berkshire Country Club and booked it for their Big Day. With the space outfitted in their wedding colors of navy blue, sage green and white, friends and family joined Ally’s parents, Mary and Tom Frebel, and Sam’s parents, Sue and Sam Marrella, Sr., in joining the pair and two families.

Ashley Schneider, Ally’s best friend from college, served as Maid of Honor, and Pat O’Brien, Sam’s childhood best friend, served as Best Man. The bride wore a gown from Dressed in Love Bridal in West Reading. At the reception, guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres, including chicken quesadillas, coconut shrimp, bruschetta, mac & cheese bites, caprese skewers and beef sliders

Says Ally, “The highlight of my day was my first look with my dad, Tom, and brother, Wes, followed by a first look with Sam. It was very emotional, and I was thankful our photographer and videographer (Kay Ann Photo & Film, Philadelphia) were able to capture those raw moments. The weeks leading up to my wedding contained a lot of uncertainty regarding whether or not my grandmother, 'Gumsy,’ would be able to attend. The morning of my wedding, we got the news that she was feeling up to coming to the ceremony. I will never forget looking up from the altar and seeing her amongst my family.”

HYGGE

at Home BY HEATHER BAVER

Hygge, which is pronounced “hooga,” is a Danish concept that embodies comfort and serenity. This idea involves taking time to slow down, relax and enjoy the people and things in life that bring you happiness. Infuse your home with added coziness with these ideas to incorporate hygge into your décor.

32

JANUARY 2024 | berkscountyliving.com

L AYER UP WITH thoughtful textures Texture is important with hygge décor. Soft upholstery and wood finishes are two key materials according to Norman Kohl, owner/principal designer of Norman Kohl Interiors, LLC. If you’re redoing a room with this style in mind, a change of large furniture pieces can make a big impact. For example, this sofa and loveseat set showcase comfy, plushy cushions perfect for relaxing (sofa, $689.99, loveseat, $649.99, Empire Home Center). The creamy, neutral fabric is also evocative of hygge. To enhance the feelings of coziness and relaxation, a matching ottoman ($269.99, Empire Home Center) provides the perfect place to put your feet up and relax with a book or chat with friends and family. “The focus on simplicity and minimalism in hygge design helps to create a sense of calm and tranquility,” explains Jennifer Inners, owner and interior designer at Saylor House. Geometric designs can make a minimalist yet bold statement. With its natural finish, this Zalemont accent table lets the beauty of the wood grain shine ($159.99, Empire Home Center). Place it next to a soft chair for a cozy reading nook. The angled sides make the piece eye-catching and unique, and the top is ideal for a lamp or candle.

Cable Knit Throw, Saylor House Galice Coffee Table, Empire Home Center

“Incorporating soft and tactile elements such as plush rugs, fluffy blankets and comfortable cushions adds coziness and comfort to a space,” says Inners. A soft knit blanket can be folded neatly in a convenient basket or artfully draped on the back of a couch when it’s not in use. This luxurious blanket has a beautiful cable pattern and is ideal for keeping you warm and toasty while watching your favorite movies ($129, Saylor House). If you usually gravitate to brighter colors, don’t worry: hygge style is anything but bland. “With neutral colors, it's important to add lots of texture; this can be done with an artful mix of accessories, baskets, wall treatments, fabrics and fresh flowers,” suggests Kohl. Besides adding texture, these elements can also add splashes of color. Made by the Rifle Paper Company, this embroidered pillow provides both color and texture. The floral pattern includes vibrant yellow-and-orange blooms and soft green leaves ($69.99, Becker Home). The cheerful design also brings a touch of spring into your home during the winter. Marigold Pillow, Becker Home You can incorporate more texture by getting creative with materials. For instance, this coffee table is made with water hyacinth, a sustainable material. The fibers have a knitted look, making them reminiscent of a blanket or sweater. It provides the practicality of a traditional coffee table while offering a softer look with its rounded shape and woven fibers ($259.99, Empire Home Center).

personal Hygge design isn’t a bunch of hard and fast rules. In your quest for this peaceful style, set your sights inward. “Whatever feels warm and comforting to you can be considered hygge,” explains Monique Becker, president and owner of Becker Home. “Things like a beautifully set dining table with friends enjoying an intimate

34 JANUARY 2024 | berkscountyliving.com

“I love the Hygge style of decorating because it is all about creating a cozy, comforting physical environment,” explains Melinda O'Neill, president of Empire Home Center. As you focus on making your home as relaxing as possible, explore your space with all your senses. While a variety of textures will enliven your sense of touch, don’t forget about your sense of smell. Aromas, emotions and memories are powerfully connected. Consider what fragrances make you feel content and relaxed. Scented candles or a diffuser can help you unwind at the end of the day. Candles provide a warm glow and offer a respite from long winter nights. Made of clean-burning coconut wax, this Voluspa candle offers an enticing combination of amber resin, sandalwood and vanilla orchid. The large jar provides 100 hours of golden, inviting light ($36, Saylor House). As an alternative to candles, try a reed diffuser. Since they are flameless, they don’t require as much attention as a candle, and they excel at providing an ongoing, enduring scent. This hand-filled diffuser contains a tantalizing blend of scents like mandarin peel, orchid notes, black rose and cedarwood ($29.95, Becker Home).

dinner party or a bouquet of fresh flowers from my garden in a beautiful piece of gifted pottery both evoke feelings of hygge. The idea is that you're looking to create a feeling in your home, not necessarily a look.” Plants are an important component to hygge style, agree O’Neill and Kohl. However, if you don’t have a green thumb, go with a no-maintenance option like dried pampas grass. Measuring 47 inches tall, these feathery stems make a bold decorating statement when placed in a vase ($20 a pack, Saylor House). You can also transform pampas grass into a cool wall hanging. While you’re thinking along individual lines, consider items that enhance your sense of wellbeing. “Layer and vary your textiles with pillows, area rugs and throws,” advises Kohl. In addition to soft, cozy sheets layered with velvety blankets or a fluffy duvet, add a hot water bottle to your bed for

Pampas Grass Saylor House the ultimate in nighttime comfort. Made by Liberty Fabrics in England, this hot water bottle has a soft, padded exterior and looks like a beautiful present with its blue bow ($39.99, Becker Home). Since it stays warm throughout the night, it’s perfect for motivating you to choose an earlier bedtime for some extra sleep or to burrow into the covers to savor a book. You can also add some extra throw pillows to your bed to make it a comfortable oasis for relaxing any time of day. Tufts of faux

feathers add amazing texture and make these decorative pillows incredibly soft. Their generous size is perfect for snuggling and adding extra warmth. The creamy, neutral hue will also complement any color of bedding ($115, Saylor House). Thoughtful touches go a long way with hygge design, so think about things that make your life easier. For example, this water carafe is beautiful and functional. Made from recycled, hand-blown glass, you can place it by your bed or desk to help you stay hydrated. The top lifts off and serves as a convenient drinking glass. You could also put one of these on the nightstand in a guest bedroom ($45.99, Becker Home). Water Carafe, Becker Home

Nesting Tray Set Empire Home Center Besides choosing furniture and décor that’s evocative of hygge, make sure your furniture layout is also geared towards comfort and relaxation. “Arrange furniture for cozy conversation. Use a fireplace or window view as a focal point,” suggests Kohl. “Consider uplighting, picture lights, floor lamps and task lighting.” For instance, this Dallson floor lamp features a rustic look with legs made of roughhewn wood ($359.99, Empire Home Center). You can place it adjacent to a sofa or chair for a warm glow while reading or working on a favorite hobby like knitting. Kohl also notes that antiques and handmade items are evocative of hygge. These pieces can provide feelings of comfort and joy since they are often sentimental items with unique stories. One of hygge design’s strengths is that “it's relaxing and inviting to us and those we love. It encourages rest and rejuvenation,” adds Kohl. Items that help organize can assist with

options One of the amazing benefits of hygge is that it can be shared. “Once you establish that feeling in your home, everyone who visits immediately feels it,” observes Becker. “It's an energy that is indescribable. You know it when you experience it because it is truly a sense of warmth and comfort.” To enhance this impression, apply the concepts of hygge design when selecting items that your guests will share with you. For example, these serving platters are made of recycled granite that’s handcrafted into a unique shape. They lend a cozy, relaxed vibe to any gathering since guests can serve themselves. Use your creativity and choose your favorite foods to create a mouthwatering display of charcuterie, cheese, fruit or luscious desserts. You can place these granite servers on your kitchen island or dining table and gather around with friends and family for tasty treats and warm conversation ($76-$110, Becker Home).

DINING OUT

Annamarie’s on Main BREAKFAST EXTRAVAGANZA BY MARIAN FRANCES WOLBERS | PHOTOS BY HEIDI REUTER

“If It Ain’t Annamarie’s, It Ain’t Breakfast!” What an apt motto for a restaurant that serves breakfast on steroids. This Birdsboro locale gets jam-packed with foodies who love to wake up well; it’s common to see 20 folks lined up outside sometimes. If you adore breakfast and brunchy foods, get ready for a tasty, uber-satisfying challenge across the spectrum — and not just omelets (with names like Porker, Angry and Memphis) but pancakes and “pancake stackers,” French toast (stuffed and unstuffed), Benedicts, waffles (including Chicken and Waffles) — and so much more. Owner Annamarie has perfected the art of imaginative cuisine with stellar combinations of ingredients that are flavored, arranged and presented in smart, mouthwatering platters. Clearly, she’s the queen of the combo, judging by the likes of Avocado Toast made with grilled challah bread, melted Swiss and arugula, plus two eggs any style (with a side of home fries) — but her many offerings also please people who bear more traditional, straightforward tastes.

The Messy Scrambler, Touch Down & The Slammer

Start, for example, with the Messy Scrambler. This one’s for that person who just can’t make up their mind — someone who’s chronically torn between getting SOS (i.e., creamed chipped beef on toast or potatoes) or maybe a Western omelet or just scrambled eggs with cheese and/or bacon (or maybe sausage instead?). No worries here! All the flavors you love come in one huge, beautiful mountain with this feature. The plate loads deliciously scrambled eggs with bacon, sausage, fresh-chopped onions and green peppers on top of home fries, topped with cheddar cheese and — at last — SOS. Asked, “Does anybody ever finish this plate?” The server, Sonia, replies: “I have one customer who does!" Indeed, the servings are generous for every dish here. What’s amazing about the Messy Scrambler is that diners can really taste all of the separate flavors as each element is expertly prepared with care, attention and proper temperature. The creamy smoothness of SOS white gravy joins with eggs and peppers, then mixes with the potato taste and texture, which gives way to cheesy satisfaction mingled with bacon, jumping back to sausage, and around to onion-y eggs, and on and on. It’s not exhausting, but rather very fun — like a rowdy square dance where you’re going do-si-do one minute, then swinging your partner, then

The Cinnabun Pancake with Cream Cheese Glaze circling left, then changing partners in a right and left grand, and round the circle you go as the fiddle plays on. At some point, you will (probably) give up. And there will be plenty left over for days after you get home! The Touch Down competes well for an eating match. It’s three eggs done your favorite way plus Annamarie’s fabulously browned home fries, toast (many choices, from tangy sourdough to rye, kaiser roll to raisin), two meats (yes, really), silver dollar-sized pancakes and — just to push to the limit so you can claim every entertainment the mouth can stand — two pieces of luscious French toast. Sandwiches include The Slammer made with ham, cheddar cheese and eggs between two slices of Texas Toast-style French toast. Eggwhite Sammy enlivens egg whites with spinach, savory sun-dried tomato and provolone on wheat toast for an uber-healthy breakfast or brunch.

“Most Known for Her Pancakes”

But that’s just the beginning of this breakfast story. According to Sonia, hundreds of fans are attracted to Annamarie’s pancakes. That truth is evidenced by a truly exciting number of options. There is plain, of course! Purists will taste for themselves how fluffy (yet substantial) and exceptionally authentic these homemade pancakes are. Naturally, there are some outrageous toppings to select from: chocolate chips, banana, blueberry, brown-sugared walnuts and pecans. The Cinnabun with Cream Cheese Glaze pancake is quite popular and stunningly decadent, as is the pancake stacker dubbed Chunky Monkey, chocolate and peanut butter chip pancakes topped with bananas, peanut butter sauce and fudge Snickerdoodle. Blueberry pancakes made anywhere else could never come near Annamarie’s specialty dish named St. Theresa’s BlueRibbon Blueberry. This elegant plate is saintly indeed, a concoction dreamed up in a fantasy foodie universe where blueberry crumb pie comes to breakfast disguised as light pancakes about the size of a baby’s head. The pancakes themselves are made with a batter

heavily dotted with plump, sweet berries, lovingly blanketed with a just-tart blueberry compote. Next, crunchy crumblies like the sort you’d find on a pie embellish the top, sprinkled with powdered sugar like a quick snowsquall. Sip of coffee, a forkful of pancakes, and then — surprise! Cream cheese oozes gently out of the center for a twist, a brilliant bit of salty tang to counter the sweet syrup while boosting the blueberry flavor.

Scrapple or Taylor Pork Roll, Anyone?

Berks County is all about the old-time meats, and two of those are scrapple and pork roll. Here are some amazing specials you’ll not find anywhere else: Scrapple Hash, a Benedict called Scrapplicious (scrapple topped with SOS) and Pork Roll Omelet.
