“I RECEIVED ALL MY EDUCATION TO BECOME

A DOCTOR RIGHT HERE IN THE

LEHIGH VALLEY.”

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE TEMPLE/ST. LUKE’S SCHOOL OF MEDICINE CLASS OF 2022! Thirty medical school graduates will now go on to practice medicine. Many new doctors, such as Dr. Nick Roma, will stay in our community. Dr. Roma just graduated from Temple/St. Luke’s School of Medicine and will be a resident at St. Luke’s University Hospital – Bethlehem, where he plans to become an interventional cardiologist. Nick’s accomplishment is a combination of hard work, dedication and an entirely homegrown education. He graduated from Central Catholic High School and Muhlenberg College, and went on to study medicine right here at the Nation’s #1 Teaching Hospital. It’s an educational journey that could only be made possible by the first and only four-year medical school in the Lehigh Valley.

As we celebrate the Best of the Lehigh Valley, our editor-in-chief Kristen Wagner is sharing a few of what she considers her best personal investments. Here’s what she’s loving right now. DREAM SPACES ELEVATE DESIGN STUDIO Stephanie Fay grew up obsessing over HGTV, and when it came time to choose a career, she took off for the New York School of Interior Design. After years in the industry, she launched Elevate Interior Design Studio in fall 2021. Fay acts as founder, owner and lead designer of the studio, operating out of the Lehigh Valley. “I love keeping up with the latest trends, but the best part is meeting new people and being a part of something so transformative in the lives of my clients,” Fay says. “This profession is all about bringing dreams to life, making fantasies reality.” Laurys Station | 610.360.0768 elevateids.com

An Artist’s Oasis

VASARI CLASSIC ARTISTS’ OIL COLORS

Since 1995, Vasari Classic Artists’ Oil Colors has been helping artists personally select more than 130 colors and pigments. Now, Vasari is welcoming the Lehigh Valley to their new showroom at Easton’s Simon Silk Mill, where locals can watch the step-by-step process of creating different pigments. The personal experience of the showroom, matched with modern color chemistry, allows artists to experience small-batch handcrafting. What’s more, this experience is not only for the professional painter—anyone with an interest will be able to take in the interactive, artistic experience that Vasari is offering. “Seeing color in its purest form, as rich buttery paint that’s easy to brush right from the tube, is a treat for anyone,” says Stephen Salek, founder and paint maker. “Our library of books and exhibition catalogs collected over the past 30 years is a welcome inspiration for visitors to our Easton showroom and the display of antique art materials is a visual delight.” 1235 Simon Blvd. P102, Easton | 212.947.1858 | vasaricolors.com

SPORTS & SOCIAL ALLENTOWN Principal and partner of the Cordish Company, Reed Cordish is raising the bar in Downtown Allentown. Sports & Social opened its doors at the former Hamilton Kitchen & Bar location at the end of April 2022, and is a prime indoor and outdoor destination for great food, live music, fun games (think foosball, arcade games, skee-ball, pong and more) and broadcast sports. “It is just the start,” Cordish says, noting that he loves being a part of an advancing city with a smalltown feeling. Their menu of highly curated food items is made completely from scratch, and the signature Crush Bar on the dog-friendly outdoor patio features a large selection of specialty crush drinks. No matter what type of sports fan you are, Cordish says there is truly something for everyone—and the 25-foot high-definition media wall as well as more than 30 HD TVs make cheering on whichever team you are rooting for seamlessly possible. 645 Hamilton St., Allentown | 610.638.0899 | sportsandsocial.com/allentown L E H I G H V A L L E Y S T Y L E . VOICES OF THE VALLEY

Russell Fletcher CEO, FOUNDER & MASTER DISTILLER OF THIS LIFE FOREVER

Russell Fletcher founded This Life Forever in 2008, and has grown to be a highly reputable, beloved spirits producer in the area as well as the first Black distillery owner in the state. “It never made me feel different because my focus has always been on producing a top-tier, award-winning product rather than categorizing myself based on race,” says Fletcher. “It is my responsibility to be a lighthouse not only in my industry, but also for other diverse entrepreneurs, both men and women.” The work Fletcher does is truly admirable, and he prides

himself on creating a product that people genuinely love. Mishka Premium Vodka is Fletcher’s baby. It comes in two flavor flagships, Mishka Honey and Mishka Cranberry as well as one unflavored Mishka Premium. What started as an experiment in Allentown has turned into a well-known product around the Valley. Mishka Premium Vodka can be purchased at Fine Wine & Good Spirits stores in the area as well as at independent vodka bars at Musikfest and behind home plate at Coca-Cola Park.

Currently, Fletcher is working to open his first brick-andmortar location in Allentown. “As an entrepreneur, you couldn’t ask for a better opportunity,” he says. “And as an individual, the Valley is the perfect place to start and raise a family, as my wife Tetyana and I are doing.”

NEW IN TOWN

MAKING NOWHERE SOMEWHERE

NOWHERE COFFEE CO.

Like many during the pandemic, Lauren and Juan Vargas left their corporate careers, longing for something that would make them genuinely happy. The two spent a lot of time listening to music together, and when the thought of a coffee shop began to brew in their brains, the song on repeat was “Road to Nowhere” by Talking Heads. “When it was time to decide on a name for the company, we kind of looked at each other one day and said, you know if we’ve been on the road to nowhere, we should at least make nowhere somewhere,” says Lauren, co-owner and co-operator. “Now, we are here.” Nowhere Coffee Co. opened its doors in Allentown in February 2022. They’re serving up luxurious, music-pun-titled coffee and food creations like the “Whole Lotta Lav,” the “Let It Bee” and the “Grateful Egg.” The “You Can Go Your Own Way” gives each customer total creative freedom in making their beverage literally their own way. The Vargases are bringing a whole new coffee shop experience to the Valley and it’s called Nowhere. 3127 W. Tilghman St., Allentown | 484.935.3443 | nowherecoffeeco.com

Pressed Bouquet SHOP

As Pressed Bouquet Shop (PBS) continues to grow and evolve, founder Amelia Paradysz says her goal is to stay true to the business’s mission of empowering local creatives with employment opportunities, connecting industry professionals and always striving for more sustainable practices. And she hopes to bring this mission outside of the Valley by expanding PBS’s footprint in order to preserve the sentiment of once-in-alifetime florals for clients across the country.

Form meets function with the shop’s resin preservation line, which includes offerings like serving trays, coasters, ring holders and more.

AMELIA PARADYSZ Founder, Owner & CEO

Tell us about the journey to Pressed Bouquet Shop. Where did the idea come from? I have always had a love for nature and flowers. Growing up, I would watch my mom tend to her flower beds, and my dad would plant a vegetable garden every year. When I moved into my Downtown Bethlehem apartment, I was lucky enough to have an outdoor space with a tiny patch of land. It was there that I planted my first flower garden and watched it grow. Remembering the single pressed white rose my grandmother gifted to me on my sixteenth birthday, I decided I would give this preservation method a try. Tell us about the launch of the business. As I began preserving my own flowers, social media began working in my favor, as I was sharing my newfound hobby with friends and family online. Not long after my first post, I was requested to press a former coworker’s wedding bouquet.

The snowball effect of social media continued and flowerpressing requests began piling up.

The snowball effect of social media continued and flowerpressing requests began piling up. I launched the Pressed Bouquet Shop on Etsy at the peak of the pandemic. While many couples postponed their big day, there were some who opted for a microwedding, which heightened the sentiment of their tangible wedding-day décor, including their flowers—driving a need for preservation. After many late nights, I felt a calling to make the Pressed Bouquet Shop my life's passion. I left my steady fulltime job and opened a storefront just 30 days later to fully begin the journey of entrepreneurship. Tell us about the variety of your offerings! We are proud to have a wide product line that complements a variety of décor styles, while keeping with the “modern bouquet preservation” theme. We have our flagship product, our Bouquet Frame (16”x20”), which can be created with an archival-grade white background or as a float frame, which showcases the pressed blooms between two panes of

glass. We also have our resin preservation line—a trendy option where form meets function. We create pressed flower designs within serving trays, display trays, coaster sets and even dainty ring holders! In addition to our custom products, we recently launched our “Just Because” line, a collection of ready-to-ship pieces, perfect for any occasion or simply just because!

Tell us a little bit about your pressing process. When fresh flowers arrive, either shipped directly or dropped off at our showroom, they are immediately placed in our large, walk-in cooler for safekeeping. Within a day of their arrival, the pressing process begins. Great care is taken with each bloom, and the process and timeline are adapted to the needs of each flower based on factors like species, color, moisture content and arrival condition. We have a team of flower preservation specialists who are experts at turning fresh flowers to pressed, preparing the art medium for our designers to then work their magic. Is there something that readers may be surprised to hear that you offer? Yes! We often get the question of working with already-dried flowers, and while we cannot press dry flowers (they would just crumble to pieces), we can take small pieces of the dried flowers and turn them into petal confetti to be used in our resin offerings. This is a great way to dust off the bouquet that’s been sitting on your dresser and give it new life as something functional! We also offer recreations, which is essentially a replica bouquet created by one of our partner florists that we then press and design as if it was the same bouquet from the original event. This process takes a bit longer since we have to source new blooms, so be sure to reach out with plenty of time before you need the finished piece!

How has social media allowed PBS to expand its reach outside of the Lehigh Valley? Our social media following has allowed us to scale on a national level. We receive sentimental bouquets from all over the United States, including both Hawaii and Alaska! We are nearing 12K followers on Instagram, and it is all thanks to our clients for sharing their experience with their own network. Word-of-mouth marketing has been our most valued source of advertising to date. Although we are growing quickly, we always treat each order as if it is our own memento—it’s the human touch that makes a small business so special.

Tell us about your events. Events are one of our favorite ways to get the community involved; our most recent was an in-person consultation event. We invited six of our vendor partners to show off their offerings all week long while we demonstrated our preservation options to couples and their loved ones. We completely transformed our showroom (with the help of Lavish Haus) into a dreamy and inviting space with champagne, macarons and charcuterie, of course! We are planning another consultation event in the fall—keep an eye on our website or social media for details! Better Together:

Vreeland is helping clients combat hyperindependence.

COMMUNITY HEALING ALISSA VREELAND, LPC Founder & Owner, Root Collective joinrootcollective.com alissavreeland.com

Not content to simply helm a private practice at Easton’s Simon Silk Mill, holistic psychotherapist Alissa Vreeland, LPC, was inspired to create a space for community healing, bringing women together to help each other grow. Here’s how she did it and why.

WE NEED EACH OTHER

Research says that the biggest indicator of whether a difficult event becomes lasting trauma is the support we receive in response. “And what makes therapy effective,” Vreeland says, “is the relationship between therapist and client.” As humans, we’re biologically hardwired for connection, belonging and community.

“That’s why we spend our lives adjusting ourselves to fit in,” Vreeland says, “reading and scanning our environment for signs of desired behavior. The dysfunctional part of this is hyper-independence.” Hyper-independence is the desire to navigate struggles without asking for help, to appear to have it together and to feel uncomfortable showing our vulnerabilities. It’s lonely, stressful and makes everything harder. There has been a growing movement of sharing struggles—once they’re over. The pressure is still on to hide un-cute emotions and hardships until we can say we’ve come out the other side. Root Collective is Vreeland’s effort to provide space to come together and connect more deeply to ourselves and our internal experiences in the presence of others.

THE SCIENCE OF STRESS

In Vreeland’s private practice, she attracts many Gen Z and Millennial clients who are noticing symptoms like irritability, feelings of disconnection and racing minds— hallmarks of anxiety. “Stressful lives cause a stress response in our bodies,” Vreeland says. “Our nervous systems become dysregulated, prompting us to operate in survival mode.” We all have different reasons for chronic stress, and two years of a pandemic is certainly one. “We need to normalize how our bodies and brains respond to a constant flood of stress in our lives. You can only take so much before you see symptoms. It’s really normal,” she adds. “Welcome to being human.”

We need to normalize how our bodies and brains respond to a constant flood of stress in our lives. You can only take so much before you see symptoms.

For those suffering, though, it doesn’t feel normal. We easily turn on ourselves with an attitude of blame and hyperindependence, in no hurry to reveal what we’re going through.

Whatever your style, you’ll find it at our bath, kitchen and lighting showrooms.

ROOT COLLECTIVE

As Vreeland helped her clients nurture themselves out of this type of survival mode, she noticed a shift in focus. “As they moved out of chronic stress and anxiety,” she says, “space freed up.” We’re able to care about and feel curiosity and awareness for so much more when we’re no longer just getting through each day. We might realize how disconnected we’ve felt from ourselves and others, and feel ready to change that. Seeing how ready these clients were to grow and connect, Vreeland realized she could bring people together to do this work. Root Collective is about sharing yourself and your struggle with others who are in the same arena and can cheer you on. Braving vulnerability and having the validation of others is the antithesis to struggling alone, and vital to being a strong, happy human.

What form does Root Collective take? Vreeland offers five-week group sessions, workshops and has a longer retreat in the works. Root Collective isn’t the same as or a replacement for therapy, and it’s not appropriate for those in the midst of crisis. Instead, it adds a venue for community healing for those who are ready. Virtual groups bring women together weekly, joining from anywhere. With Vreeland’s facilitation, conversation focuses on identifying and shedding the narratives that have led to hyper-independence.

Participants might share moments when showing vulnerability backfired, fueling isolating defenses. “A lot of people who gravitate towards this are the deep-feeling, intuitive, empathetic people,” Vreeland says. “For them, it’s hard to have big feelings in a world where we’re still not talking about our feelings. In Root Collective, it’s a space with others who get you and where everyone knows that the cool thing is to be yourself.”

In June, Root Collective held its first workshop, partnering with Skinterest Skincare Boutique, Lavish Haus Design & Event Co. and Easton Yoga to provide a day full of nourishment. Combining yoga, facials and massages, and a potted plant craft with juicy group work, it’s a selfcare holiday away from it all that will be returning in the fall to bring like-minded ladies together. “By going into it,” Vreeland notes, “you’re self-describing that you care about working on this. You’re coming into this with the expectation that there will be openness and vulnerability.” It inspires trust and empathy just to know why you’re there! Robert Irvine CELEBRITY CHEF & CO-OWNER OF BOARDROOM SPIRITS

BY AMY UNGER | PHOTOGR APHY BY IAN SPANIER & PAUL SIROCHMAN

38

J U LY 2 0 2 2 : L E H I G H V A L L E Y S T Y L E . C O M

Meet Irvine at our Best Of party this month!

Whoever oversees Robert Irvine’s travel arrangements probably deserves a raise. During a recent phone interview, Irvine, fresh off one trip (Arizona), was packing for another (Idaho), the next place in a seemingly nonstop lineup of destinations (Charlotte, Philadelphia, San Antonio, Spain and Scotland, just to name a few) on his itinerary over the next several weeks. “I’m busier than a one-armed paper hanger,” he jokes, “but I’m happy.” The jam-packed schedule isn’t too surprising. After all, you don’t become a celebrity chef, TV personality, cookbook author, businessman, restaurant owner, philanthropist and entrepreneur by loafing around on the sofa. “I’m not comfortable unless I’m working,” says Irvine. “I can’t sit at home.” Irvine was born in England in 1965 and joined the Royal Navy when he was a teenager; that’s also when his cooking career began. He became a mainstay in American living rooms after he cemented his status as a regular on the Food Network in the early 2000s, hosting or appearing on a number of popular shows, including Restaurant: Impossible, in which Irvine and his team have 48 hours to save struggling establishments from almost certain closure. “It’s real time, real people, real problems and real solutions,” Irvine says. Lehigh Valley foodies may remember that a taping for an episode of the show in 2013 brought Irvine to the now-shuttered Benner Street restaurant in Fountain Hill.

Overall, he’s been accepting these seemingly impossible missions for more than 10 years and admits he may have softened a bit since that very first makeover. “I feel I’ve gotten a little bit more human,” Irvine says. “I think I learned to listen a little bit more, and then react.” And part of that wisdom came from grappling with the challenges of fostering his own businesses and endeavors over the years. Irvine has penned four cookbooks and launched his own online magazine. He also has a namesake food brand as well as Fit Crunch, a line of protein bars and protein powder. Most recently, Irvine, long a proponent of exercise and body building (he’s been known to eschew the traditional chef’s jacket in favor of a bodyhugging T-shirt), decided to get into the clothing business with the launch of Apollo, a line of fitness apparel. That’s not to say that everything Irvine touches turns to gold, especially when there’s a global pandemic involved. Irvine had two restaurants under his belt— Public House in Las Vegas, and Fresh Kitchen inside the Pentagon—when it was announced in the summer of 2019 that he would be opening a new Fresh Kitchen inside the fledgling Downtown Allentown Market. But COVID-19 reared its head just a couple of months after the market opened. “I loved Allentown,” Irvine says. “I loved the concept [of the restaurant]. COVID killed that right off the bat, unfortunately.”

I scoured the country and the world, went to Sri Lanka and picked up cinnamon. The botanicals in the gin and the vodka are what I use in food. That’s how it all started.

The market was forced to close for several months, and when it reopened for takeout in June of 2020, Fresh Kitchen was no longer among its vendors. While Irvine has no plans to open another restaurant in the Lehigh Valley in the immediate future… never say never. “I would love to get back into that at the right time,” he says. And luckily for his local fans, Irvine’s busy travel schedule does include a stop in the Lehigh Valley in the very near future. He’ll be making an appearance at Lehigh Valley Style’s Best Of party this month, offering samples and whipping up cocktails featuring his brand of spirits. Irvine’s gin and vodka are distilled at Lansdale’s Boardroom Spirits, of which Irvine is a partowner. According to Irvine, the recipes for his namesake spirits are his own. “I wanted an American dry gin,” he says. “I scoured the country and the world, went to Sri Lanka and picked up cinnamon. The botanicals in the gin and the vodka are what I use in food. That’s how it all started.”

40

J U LY 2 0 2 2 : L E H I G H V A L L E Y S T Y L E . C O M

Irvine’s go-to cocktail? That depends on his mood. He’s a big-time vodka-cranberry guy, but also is known to kick back with a Moscow Mule or Tom Collins. He won’t say no to a pint of beer or a glass of red, either. “I like unusual wines,” Irvine says. He cites Australia’s Mollydooker Blue Eyed Boy shiraz as one of his top picks. And while we’re on the subject of indulgences, don’t mistake Irvine’s buff physique for that of a man who doesn’t know his way around a Twix or Milky Way candy bar. “I believe every meal should end with something sweet,” says Irvine. Does he

also partake in the occasional (gasp!) Big Mac and strawberry milkshake? You bet. Of all the projects that Irvine has on his plate at any given moment, perhaps he’s most proud of what he does with the Robert Irvine Foundation, which he created in 2014 after working alongside actor and veterans’ advocate Gary Sinise. “It’s basically to take care of our veterans and first responders that I feel have been left behind,” Irvine says. “It’s up to individual folks and foundations to fill in the gaps where the government can’t.” The foundation offers support

in a number of ways, such as providing service dogs and “standing” wheelchairs to wounded veterans as well as offering scholarships to the children of military parents, and preparing meals to be served at military bases and firehouses. “Freedom is not free,” says Irvine. “We see it every day with our first responders, our police officers, our firefighters, our doctors and nurses as well as our men and women who wear the cloth of the nation.” chefirvine.com irvinespirits.com robertirvinefoundation.org

The Other Fish started its life as Dancing Fish in 2000, but whatever you call it, this inventive Asian spot specializes in Japanese fare and excellent sushi. You won’t find runof-the-mill selections here. Ahem, sushi with fruit? Or the Japanese bagel—smoked salmon, cream cheese, scallions. Deliveries arrive twice a week for optimal freshness; popular rolls include the Wayno, Drunk on a Tuesday and the Bobby Knight. BREWERY

BREWING COMPANY

What does New York City native Sam Masotto want you to know about the brewery in Bethlehem that he opened and operates with his wife, Gina? “Bonn Place is nice beers for nice people.” Easy enough. And maybe that is the most important thing about this gem on the city’s south side, which was founded in 2016 and stands out as a must-visit among the ever-growing number of craft breweries in the Valley. Good beer? Check. Cool atmosphere? Check. “You may walk into Bonn Place and feel that it's a private club because everyone seems to know each other,” Masotto says. “This is just the spirits at work, in a magical, special place that is very well protected.”

Whether it’s a sweet-tooth craving or a last-minute gifting need, Josh Early has just the thing.

Did you know that Hummus House moved to Bethlehem? Find their falafel, shawarma and Beyond creations there.

Husband-and-wife team Matt and Cindy Weintraub took on this existing business in 2018, after being longtime fans and patrons, and it’s truly been a dream come true. Not much has changed in all those years. “Our cheesesteaks are made the same way they have been for over 25 years (onions, sauce, pickles and American cheese) unless you request differently,” says Cindy. Rolls are delivered fresh daily from Amoroso’s in Philadelphia. The consistency is something that accounts for the win. “They’re even made by staff that is still here from the beginning, with the exception of Carl, who comes to visit from time to time,” says Cindy. 2 W. HOEM

This meal delivery service was born during the pandemic, when people needed seriously good takeout—but it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. Established in 2021 by longtime friends Danny Adams and Mike Slaski, HOEM takes its playon-words name from their children’s initials. “Danny and Mike wanted to create a business for their families, which would also allow them to be home more. With the pandemic, we saw a need for this type of service: meals that you can serve to your family knowing everything is homemade and fresh,” says Karen Adams. Think of HOEM as your own personal Hello Fresh or Blue Apron. Choose what you want from the menu; deliveries are made on Tuesdays and Thursdays. hoemkitchen.com

Not every food truck is kosher and vegetarian, but this one is. Around the Table has been operated by Lee and Dror Levi, a husband-and-wife team, for 12 years. Known for their falafel, Around the Table’s food is all homemade and authentically Middle Eastern. “People from all over the world eat all kinds of food and share stories around the table. Food speaks all languages,” says Dror, who is Israeli. If your language includes gyro, falafel, shakshuka or shawarma, this is your food truck. You can find it Sunday through Thursday in the Jewish Community Center of the Lehigh Valley parking lot from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Stella Brown knows what it’s like to be at the top level of physical fitness—she’s the daughter of a boxer/bodybuilder and a model who pushed her to aim for perfection in pageants, dance, karate and other pursuits. She also knows what it’s like to be at the bottom; Brown says her body was so depleted by the age of 19 that she was told she’d never be physically active again. “I wasn’t having that,” she says. That’s when she took charge of her own destiny. Brown has been a professional trainer for 10 years and is the owner of Stella Fitness in Easton, where she promotes healthy eating and movement habits. “I tell [clients], always one bite or one step at a time.” 1232 Northampton St., Easton |

BEST HAIR STYLIST

A salon BY ALYSSA RADER

The “A” in A Salon stands for Alyssa (Rader), the founder and owner of the Emmaus establishment, but it could also stand for the A+ treatment you’ll get in Rader’s chair. “I always had a passion for hair,” Rader says. “I always knew growing up that I was going to be in the cosmetology industry.” She’s been at it now for 10 years, with expertise in both men’s and women’s cuts, coloring and styles. Rader says her favorite part of each appointment is handing over the mirror at the end, so the freshly coiffed client can see his or her new reflection: “I feel like I get to be the little change in the world making someone feel better about themselves.” 3305 W. BEST WAXING

Put down the at-home waxing kit! Cleaning up those brows or bikini line—or really, just about any spot that needs a smooth-over—is a job best left to the professionals; or, more specifically, to Vanity Haus. Owner Mariana Franco opened her shop in Bethlehem last year and says her team has perfected a technique that’s ideal for all skin types and comfort levels. “We are one of the rare establishments that uses a vegan, hypoallergenic and cruelty-free state-of-the-art hard wax for all our waxing services,” says Franco. “It is less painful than other hard waxes on the market, which leads to a better client experience.”

Lindsey Titone always dreamed of becoming a hair stylist. But the dream didn’t end there. The self-described “shopaholic” wanted to own a clothing boutique, too. With Hello Beautiful in Fogelsville, which opened in 2020, she has both under one roof. “I can make people feel beautiful from head to toe,” Titone says. The boutique side is stocked with items for women of all sizes and based on the current fashion trends for ladies in their thirties through their sixties. “We love that our guests can buy for themselves, their daughters or even their moms,” says Titone.

Got kids? Let ’em run wild—in a safe, structured, clean environment—at Lehigh Valley Sports Turf. Husband and wife Eric and Jeanie DiFulvio opened the indoor sports training facility in Upper Macungie Township in February of 2020. Their initial focus was on soccer, but after the pandemic struck, they realized they needed a new game plan. “Being a mother of two young children, I always struggled with finding a child care/preschool program I really enjoyed that focused on sports just as much as academics,” Jeanie says. Now, they offer everything from birthday parties to open play to “presport” (preschool plus sports) programs designed to keep young minds and bodies active. 7035 Schantz Rd. LOCAL PODCAST THE OFFICIAL

Forget about the ladies who lunch. Instead, grab a bite with the boys who brunch. George Gaisey and Dashawn Upson, who both hail from Whitehall, say they’ve been buddies since they were kids. They’re the voices you hear on “The Official Brunch Boys” podcast, which launched in August of 2020. But don’t let the name fool you— they’re not just talking about places to get a tasty short stack. On the menu is a buffet of topics that run the gamut from racial injustice to current events to personal stories about romantic relationships and friendships. They also frequently share the mic with guests to keep the conversation fresh and unpredictable. So, as the boys might say, grab a (bottomless) mimosa, sit back and catch a vibe. theofficialbrunchboys

For those who can’t dig into breakfast, lunch or dinner without first posting a picture of it, Heidi Stahl may be your patron saint. She’s the brains (and the belly) behind Lehigh Valley Food For Thought, an online record of all the sweet, savory and scintillating dishes, desserts and snacks that Stahl has sampled at the area’s many eateries. It’s a journey chronicled in one delicious close-up after another. “I love the experience of trying dishes I might not have normally tried and experiencing all different types of food,” Stahl says. “Having this food blog has also pushed me to order new things.”

PHOTOGRAPHER

Alison Conklin has been a full-time photographer for nearly two decades and has shot weddings for even longer than that, so she understands how important the big moments can be. But she’s in it for the little moments, too. Her parents were both hobbyist photographers; the family photos they accumulated took on even more significance after her mother died when Conklin was 14 years old. “Looking at those images of my mom laughing with her eyes closed, cooking in the kitchen and laughing with friends showed me who she was,” Conklin says. Her favorite thing to shoot, she says, is anything that will be cherished for a lifetime. And she considers herself lucky to have her husband, Geoff, who’s also a professional photographer, at her side as her business partner. alisonconklin.com

EAT THIS

BY K RIS T EN WAGNER | PHOTOGR A PH Y BY M AT T HE W C A NNON

It’s similar to the Tornado Potato, found on boardwalks at the Jersey Shore.

Spiral THE IRON MULE Spud The Iron Mule’s Spiral Spud appetizer consists of a tempura-floured, deep-fried russet potato that’s topped with crispy bacon bits and scallions, and comes with a side of house beer cheese. “The inspiration behind the Spiral Spud was the Jersey boardwalks,” says Yayah McGurn, general manager. “The Spud can be paired with almost any lager—or a Shock Top, Blue Moon, Hoegaarden, etc.” McGurn says that the dish is one of the more popular appetizers that the restaurant offers and

is definitely here to stay. Other favorites include their Wings Your Way and the bacon-wrapped Brussels sprouts. The Iron Mule debuted its new seasonal menu over Memorial Day weekend, so be sure to go check it out. 831 S. Delaware Dr., Easton 484.544.4728 ironmulepa.com
