3 THINGS
our publisher, Pam Deller, is looking forward to this month! pdeller@lehighvalleystyle.com
22 How well do you think you know the Lehigh Valley? On pg. 56, we’re putting your knowledge to the test with our first-ever photo pop quiz. We sent Style photographer Alison Conklin across the region shooting iconic Valley staples as well as hidden gems and some newer additions. In these pages, find zoomed-in snippets of each image and see if you can figure out what it is! If you think you know, head to lehighvalleystyle.com/share-withus to submit your guesses. The person with the most correct answers will win a special prize from us! Use the hashtag #lvstylepopquiz on Instagram the next time you’re at one of the featured spots for bonus points. And for those who are simply curious, later this month, all of the answers will be revealed with full-size images on lehighvalleystyle.com.
We love celebrating the place that we call home and, this month, we’re doing that in a few different ways. On pg. 44, Mandee and Alex McEvoy are welcoming readers inside the major home renovation projects they’ve been working on in Bangor and documenting on Instagram (@ourmodernhome). TV host, interior designer and cook Evette Rios lets us in on her move to the Valley on pg. 38 and discusses her big plans for the 7,600-square-foot warehouse she recently purchased in Allentown. Read all about the PA House restaurant on pg. 64, go inside Abode Home Decor in Nazareth on pg. 22 and discover ways to make your own house a healthy one on pg. 29. We hope you curl up with this edition, a delicious beverage (maybe the Aussie iced coffee on pg. 72) and feel right at home.

I love a good DIY! So many times I will see something in a store and think how easily I could just DIY the same thing. Do I ever get around to doing said DIY? Usually not, but sometimes my creativity comes out to make something really fun!

Yea for DIY. We recently sanded and repainted all our kitchen cabinets inside and out, which then turned into needing to repaint the kitchen walls a new color, which turned into...
I DIYed three homes in my younger years... now I say nay!
Definitely DIY! It’s amazing what you can do when you try.
In my mind, I am the greatest DIYer ever, but reality is much different. I wish I had the skill and patience to learn and craft, but when I as much as bring up painting some walls or starting a project, it’s met with laughter from my family. Definitely DIY. It saves money, for sure, but some of the best times I’ve ever had were when my hubby and I worked together on home projects!

Isasuma started a GoFundMe campaign to deliver truckloads of clean water to a Wayuu settlement in the desert of La Guajira and donated 170,000 liters in 2021.
CRAFTED WITH VISION SONNY FLORET When owner Kaitlyn Leupold launched Georgia’s Flower Truck four years ago, she says she envisioned herself doing pop-up events almost indefinitely. “What I found over the last year is that as my business grew so did my love for the art of floral design, specifically wedding design and floral installations,” says Leupold. “I want my flowers and design style to ultimately attract my people.” Through Sonny Floret, Leupold will lean heavily into wedding design and hopes to be the florist that people think to go to for their classically inspired design elements, out-of-the-box ideas and anything in between. While Leupold is thrilled to be moving her business in this direction, she says the gift to do so is not lost on her: “I’m fully aware that the support of my community over the years through Georgia’s Flower Truck has given me the ability and the confidence to pivot my business and stand where I am today.” And so, the truck will still be shared with the community as a great addition to any celebration and is available to rent for any and all occasions. sonnyfloret.com
One of a Kind ISASUMA
After nearly a decade of selling at street festivals, and two successful years as an online business, Isasuma officially opened as a brick-and-mortar store in the heart of Downtown Easton in February 2022. “After participating in Easton’s Winter Village in 2020 and 2021, we knew we were ready to take a step forward and open our very first store,” says director Andrea Rincon. “We wanted to let our close community be part of our mission of supporting small artisans and indigenous communities in Latin America.” The shop’s most popular pieces are the worldrenowned Wayuu bags from Colombia. “Ever since we went to the desert of La Guajira, Colombia, we fell in love with the Wayuu indigenous tribe and their amazing skills as weavers. They are the masters behind the famous Wayuu mochila bag, a crochet bag with centuries of meaning and symbolism. Crocheting is the engine in the life, culture and economic fulfillment of this community.” Isasuma also carries a variety of accessories made by the Wayuu, Kuna and Emberá tribes from South America. Everything is ethically sourced, handmade and one of a kind. 228 Northampton St. 2 FL, Easton | 610.463.0011 | isasuma.com
AN EMMAUS LOCATION GRANDPA JOE’S CANDY SHOP
“I grew up in the Lehigh Valley and I’m excited to continue to grow my brand ‘back home,’” says owner Christopher J. Beers, who opened a Grandpa Joe’s Candy Shop location in Downtown Bethlehem in October 2019 and, most recently, an Emmaus location. He says many locals were already familiar with his brand, having traveled to the original flagship location in Pittsburgh. “It’s really important to me to open my stores in small downtown communities. I feel that we can make a bigger impact on our neighbors, create loyal fans and give back to the community through donations and sponsorships when opening in downtown communities rather than the ‘chain store’ locations.” At Grandpa Joe’s, they strive to have the absolute largest selection of candy, with nostalgic and international options as well as more than 250 glass-bottled craft sodas. The new Emmaus location will put an emphasis on toys and games, and Beers is especially excited to add a model train that will be suspended from the ceiling. 304 Main St., Emmaus | 484.519.1651 | grandpajoescandyshop.com LEHIGHVALLE YST YLE.COM : SEP TEMBER 2022

VOICES OF THE VALLEY
Terry Wallace CEO, ALYNUS INC & PRESIDENT, VENTURE X LEHIGH VALLEY Watch the Unscripted with Russo podcast video with Terry Wallace at lehighvalleystyle.com.
Venture X, the coworking space in Southside Bethlehem, was supposed to open a month before the pandemic hit. “As you can imagine, our first year and a half was very difficult,” says president Terry Wallace. “However, we’ve added more members and filled more offices in the past five months than we had in the previous year and a half.” Since the pandemic, as business owners and decision makers come to understand the comprehensive service, agility and value Venture X offers, Wallace says they’ve experienced much more traction. “Every business has reassessed their use of space and working models and all businesses are seeking more flexibility, higher quality and lower cost. We deliver all of these and much more,” he says. “We’ve
also seen a spike in the number of individuals looking to increase their productivity and get work done outside of their homes.” Wallace says he was bullish on coworking prior to COVID, but he’s even more bullish after COVID. His time at WeWork certainly shed light on the value of coworking, but it was his personal experience with commuting and leading global teams that moved him to open Venture X where he calls home, in the Lehigh Valley. “There was a huge number of people commuting to New York, New Jersey and the Philadelphia area. I decided to bring the finest of Fifth Avenue space, amenities and services to where the commuters live.” Venture X will continue to expand throughout the Lehigh Valley, with plans already in motion for Easton and Allentown.

Wallace set out to help others strike a better work-life balance, so what advice does he have for those looking to do exactly that? Ask yourself: What is truly important to you? Be brutally honest, he advises. Ask yourself: What do you mean by balance? Define it and be specific. Structure your life in a manner that best positions you to meet your priorities—and make adjustments as your priorities change (because they will, he says). “My successes have been dependent on a commitment to adaptability,” says Wallace. “From a U.S. Marine to a police officer, to management consulting, to leading global HR operations at a Fortune 10 company, and then for a rapidgrowth start up and now to starting my own business.”

INFLATE LEHIGH VALLEY
“My daughter was the inspiration for this business,” says owner Leyka Chaparro. “Last year for her birthday, I wanted so badly to rent a white bounce castle after seeing them at these fabulous birthday parties that were popping up all over Instagram. Unfortunately, I did not find anyone that offered these kinds of glam inflatables in our area.” Chaparro’s plan was to start her own business from scratch, until she discovered Inflate Forty-Eight in Arizona. “I reached out to Julie Nielsen, who has been a huge resource in starting an Inflate branch right here in the Lehigh Valley.” Thanks to social media, Chaparro says people are focusing more and more on aesthetics and picture-perfect parties are now the norm. Currently, Inflate Lehigh Valley offers three different white bounce castles—a classic 15 x 15, a deluxe combo with a slide and an 8 x 8 that is perfect for indoors or smaller spaces. “As demand grows, so will our assortment.” Chaparro invites readers to mention Style to receive $50 off their first booking! SEP TEMBER 2022 : LEHIGHVALLE YST YLE.COM
From home décor to quirky finds to that perfect hostess gift, you can get it at Abode Home Decor in Nazareth. .
KRISTA LICHTENBERGER
Owner Tell us about the journey to opening Abode Home Decor in Nazareth. In January 2020, my husband, Brian, and I decided to take the leap and open my dream store. We started by doing mostly online sales out of our dining room to our friends and family. From there, we grew by word of mouth and purchased a trailer that was decorated like a store so we could drive it to hostesses’ houses for parties with their friends. The need for a brick-and-mortar store came quickly, as our inventory took over every inch of our garage. In January of 2021, I was patronizing another store in town and mentioned I was
looking for a space, and the shop owner pointed me right up the street to where we are located now. After renovations, our store opened in April of 2021.
How often can shoppers expect new offerings? Abode Home Decor changes and updates inventory often; there is always something new.
How has the store been received by the community? We have many wonderful and loyal customers that support us from all over the Lehigh Valley.
What’s the overall vibe at the shop? Abode is a laid-back shopping experience with personal attention included. We love helping our customers bring a vision for a space to life. We host a lot of great events at the store as well, such as Wine Wednesday and other seasonal events. Follow us on social media for more details!
Describe the variety of offerings sold! We carry items for every corner of your home—vases, Amishmade barn wood furniture, kitchen accents, wall décor and shelving, wonderful soy candles and gift items, too! Is there one particular offering that just flies off the shelf? We believe that all home décor should be accompanied by a sense of humor. We have a large variety of quirky signs and hand towels that are largely popular with our shoppers.

ASK THE EXPERT
Kamont shares what one can expect at his private and group readings.
Whether it’s a fun frolic into the supernatural or a quest for closure, visiting a medium is an exercise in receptivity, one that the Lehigh Valley Medium makes lighthearted and healing. Matthew Kamont decided to lean into his uncanny talent over a decade ago and provides group and private readings, passing on messages from beyond. Here’s how it works.
PSYCHIC VS. MEDIUM
Though both work with an intuitive sense, the psychic and the medium delve into different depths. “All mediums are psychic,” Kamont says, “but not all psychics are mediums.” While psychics tell their clients about their present lives and potential futures, mediums are often able to sense these more mundane matters as well as provide a conduit for energy or messages from ‘the other side.’
WHAT’S THAT LIKE?
With his typical and ironically down-to-earth humor, Kamont is quick to clarify that “No one pulls up a chair and starts shooting the shit.”

Instead, he’ll receive impressions in his mind that draw on his own memories, visual inventory and emotions, and translate them into meaningful messages. For example, “When a spirit shows me something like the Road Runner from Looney Tunes, that usually tells me that somebody was rushing to get by their side before they passed.” Like a skeptic might have to suspend disbelief to fully engage in a medium reading, Kamont has learned to trust and believe in the impulses that overtake him, even when they have him embodying a bossy persona and interrupting a client to give a pushy message, or voicing something that seems totally out of left field. Nine times out of 10, it ends up resonating with clients in a powerful way.

With grief, we tend to look inward at what happened to us, and it’s so healing to sit with others who are dealing with the exact same thing.
GALLERY VS. PRIVATE READINGS
With audiences of 30–100 people, Kamont’s group readings cast a wide net for communicative spirits. He can personally relay impressions to around 15 or 20 audience members, but the other attendees benefit from the experience even if they don’t hear from anyone directly. “People come up after a group and tell me it touched them and gave them closure,” Kamont says. “With grief, we tend to look inward at what happened to us, and it’s so healing to sit with others who are dealing with the exact same thing.” Gallery readings are also a great way to dip your foot in, to see if you feel comfortable with a given medium and their style. “A private reading,” Kamont points out, “is a very personal thing.” His private readings, either in his Easton office or at clients’ homes, go until they’re truly tapped out, often for two or three hours. A group event is the more accessible option for Kamont, whose private readings are booked up through fall of 2023!
WHAT TO EXPECT
If you’re singled out in a gallery or get a private reading, there are a few ways to get the most out of your experience. “Just be open,” Kamont advises. “Most of what you hear should make sense, but for things that don’t, I may be interpreting it wrong, the spirit may be confused or the message may be for someone who’s not present.” Jot everything down and you may make a connection later, or tell someone else who gets a lot out of it. “The spirit is not trying to make it complicated,” Kamont feels. “So why are you? They’re giving it in the rawest form.” He also suggests reaching out to those you’re hoping to connect with—and those you aren’t—ahead of time. “Ask grandpa not to come,” Kamont says, “and ask him to make sure dad comes through. Call out to loved ones about what you want and who you want.” With that said, don’t expect demands to be met for a certain person or topic. Spirits still have free will!

SIGNS
Have you wondered whether a certain noise in the empty house is a gesture from Pop-Pop, or if the sight of a cardinal is the presence of mom? People are hard-wired for signs, and Kamont has an explanation. “They’re not turning into the butterfly, they’re not directing the bird with a remote control, but signs are given to us by our loved ones to let us know they’re nearby.” Imagine your person is just gently turning your head so you’ll notice what they do. They might wish to draw your attention to something symbolically or just to share a moment with you.

are breathing each and every night from chemicals in our mattresses, pillows and sheets. These include chemicals like formaldehyde, CFCs, herbicides and petrochemicals, to name a few. Leora and Dennis Hornick, owners of The Organic Mattress Store in Hellertown, became acutely aware of this after moving into a beautiful brandnew condominium in the Florida Keys nearly 20 years ago. Even though they were living an organic lifestyle, they didn’t think about building materials, paint, carpeting, furniture and bedding being a source of toxic exposure.

A beautiful ocean view didn’t prevent Leora from slowly getting sicker and sicker. It was not long afterwards that it dawned on them that the materials, finishes and bedding in the condominium were what were making her ill. They returned to the Lehigh Valley with only a few “safe” furniture pieces that were hardwood. “We felt like college kids starting over,” Leora says. They carefully furnished their home—this time with nontoxic organic materials, including their bed and bedding. The switch to an organic natural rubber mattress was love at first sleep. Knowing others could benefit as well, they opened The Organic Mattress Store soon after. Some believe that an organic mattress is only meant for those with chemical sensitivities or allergies, but Leora says they are great for everyone and have been preferred in Europe and Asia for decades. “They are extremely comfortable,” she says. “And Dunlop rubber, the gold standard in natural rubber, is built to last at least 10–15 years.” Conventional and memory foams laden with chemical products break down faster, need to be replaced more frequently and end up in landfills. Plus, natural rubber stays neutral to body temperature, which improves sleep quality and health, unlike synthetics that trap body heat and, in the process, result in poorer sleep quality while increasing the offgassing of chemicals in the bed and bedding. If you aren’t in a position yet to purchase an organic mattress, Leora encourages switching to organic cotton sheets and natural wool pillows to start. “Cotton is actually one of the most highly sprayed crops in the world, heavily laden with herbicides and pesticides,” she says. Your head and face are in direct contact, breathing in the off-gasses from the pillow contents as well as the pillowcase. Replacing synthetic and feathered pillows with wool pillows eliminates dust mites, mold and mildew. What’s more, wool pillows naturally wick away moisture, which helps to keep your head cool and is a key component to better sleep.
COOKING
Begin with your cookware and make the switch from nonstick to quality stainless steel or cast-iron pans. Nonstick pans contain the chemical polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), which is carcinogenic and toxic. Deemed safe, this only applies when cooking at lower temperatures before the coating releases harmful gasses. In addition, the manufacturing of the cookware has devastating consequences
to the environment with unregulated dumping and contamination to water supplies. Most nonstick pans have a short shelf life of one to five years, so a switch to stainless steel or cast iron can save on the wallet and reduce waste in the landfill. Beware of misleading labels like “PFOA-free,” as the cookware will still contain the chemical PTFE or derivatives that are just as harmful. Ceramic-coated pans can be an option, but do your due diligence on the manufacturer, as the ceramic can contain lead and other heavy metals. Another switch to make in your kitchen is reducing your plastic usage and exposure. This includes things like utensils, plates, water bottles, drinking glasses, single-use items and, especially, food storage containers. Removing foods in contact with plastic packaging helps reduce leaching of chemicals into the food. An easy economic and environmentally-friendly practice is to repurpose empty glass jars (from sauce, jelly, etc.) and utilize them for everything from drinking glasses to storing leftovers. Plastic bags and wrap can be replaced with silicone bags or beeswax wraps. While it is challenging to go plastic-free, reducing usage, especially of single-use items, and shifting purchases to sustainable food packaging like glass makes a difference.

CLEANING
Cleaning up your cleaning supplies can reduce your exposure to a host of toxic chemicals while saving money. Some of the best cleaning solutions can be made with simple nontoxic ingredients like vinegar, water and baking soda. If you aren’t a DIY person, or if you wish to shop for a variety of household and personal care products in a more sustainable, ecological way, FD Market in Easton and Emmaus is the Lehigh Valley’s first zero-waste refillable shop. Water filtration for your kitchen as well as for your bath is a critical piece in making a home healthier. You may be surprised at the level of pollutants in treated municipal water. The Environmental Working Group has a database (ewg.org/tapwater) from water utilities’ testing where you can check the quality of the tap water by zip code.

improved energy efficiency; however, it also acts as a tight seal and does not allow enough fresh air to circulate and reduce concentrations of pollutants. Some of these pollutants include volatile organic compounds (VOC) from pressed wood furniture and building material, paint, synthetic carpeting, cleaning chemicals and pesticides used in the home or tracked in on shoes, and dust mites and mold. The higher concentration of pollutants can cause eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches, nausea and damage to the liver, kidney and central nervous system, along with the fact that many of the pollutants are carcinogenic. Adding air purifiers in the home is an important step in improving indoor air quality. Increasing fresh air circulation in your home can also be done by simply opening windows, including a small crack in the winter to aid in reducing pollutant levels. Cleaning up the air in the home also means reducing fragrance products like air fresheners, scented candles and cleaning products with the word “fragrance.” These products contain phthalates, which are known to disrupt hormones in the body. Look for products that use essential oils for fragrance, and use a diffuser with quality essential oils to provide a beautiful smell in the home as well as gain the health benefits from the oils themselves.

As you make changes to your home, consider sources of toxic load you may be bringing into the home. Some ways to reduce the burden include utilizing low- or no-VOC paints and stains, eliminating laminate wood and particle board furniture, which contain formaldehyde, and replacing synthetic carpets with natural dyed wools or organic cottons. If doing larger renovations, check with your contractor to learn what materials are going into your home and their willingness to utilize low-VOC products and materials. It’s easy to get overwhelmed in making shifts in greening your home, but just remember it is a process. Small, consistent changes can have an impact on improving the health of your home as well as the environment. It is in the daily choices we make that we can all make a difference. theeastcoastorganicmattressstore.com fdmarketco.com

Grit, Integrity and Innovation Seven years ago, Evan Howard helped change the fitness game in the Lehigh Valley. Now he’s looking forward to what comes next. Entrepreneurs need to have many traits and skills in their tool belt in order to navigate this fast-paced world. But perhaps the most important characteristic one needs? Grit. Evan Howard has survived every setback one could imagine over his last seven years of entrepreneurship. The secret to his success is nothing special. It’s simply getting back up 11 times after falling down 10. COVID was the last major hurdle that nearly shuttered his first business, Forward Thinking Fitness, for good. Instead of taking the downfall as a negative, he used it as an opportunity to pivot. 2020 gave birth to two new companies, in fact. The first is an app development startup that currently helps other gyms across the country elevate their brands. His newest focus? Push the Pace Supplements, which offers 100-percent all-natural health products whose clinical effectiveness is ensured by third-party testing, meaning that FDA CGMP and Prop 65 standards are exceeded with every single batch. Evette Rios TELEVISION HOST & LIFESTYLE EXPERT It’s a good thing Evette Rios thrives on digging into new projects. The lifestyle expert, television host, designer and DIY maven is in the midst of what might be her biggest undertaking to date. Rios and her husband, attorney Stephen Davies, are renovating a three-story, 7,600-squarefoot building just outside Downtown Allentown. The third floor is living space for the couple and their two young sons, Yagüez and Juarionex, or Yago and Rex for short, respectively. But it’s Rios’s hope that the lower levels can be spaces that engage the community and fellow entrepreneurs in the neighborhood she now calls home. “I’m falling in love with the area more and more,” says Rios of the Lehigh Valley.

We need to find a way to marry our work and our lives a little deeper than we have before.
Rios has made a career out of seeing the possibilities in the world around her, whether that means transforming a barren deck into an outdoor work space, whipping up a July Fourth hot dog tray that would make Betsy Ross proud or fashioning Halloween costumes out of the odds and ends you might find tucked away in a closet. It’s a skill she says she picked up from her mother and father, who both moved to Manhattan from Puerto Rico when they were children. “My parents have what I would say is an immigrant mentality—my whole family does—where it’s always about reusing, never throwing things away, trying to fix what you have.” Rios grew up in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, an area she recalls as being a bit rough:
“Lots of drugs, lots of poor families. But for the most part, really nice people, working class people, and I have very fond memories of the friends I had there.” She lived in a twobedroom apartment with her parents and two brothers. Space was at a premium; Rios had to get creative to be creative, using the hallway or whatever enclave she could find as a makeshift art studio that could be quickly disassembled. She says her parents, too, were creative types in their own ways. She recalls watching them dabble in various facets of home improvement, such as taking classes in wallpapering and reupholstery. “They knew they wanted nice-looking things but couldn’t afford it,” Rios says, “so it was always about rehabbing and making the most of what you had.”

Post-college, she embarked on a brief career in biology at New York’s American Museum of Natural History, where she got an eyeful of mollusks in the department of malacology. “My job was looking in a microscope and drawing what I saw, basically,” Rios says. It was a lot of alone time, and it wasn’t for her. “I need people, I need to collaborate!” she says. So, Rios switched gears and pursued interior design. One of her employers was noted designer Sheila Bridges of Harlem, who was a regular contributor to NBC’s Today show and also appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Part of Rios’s job was prepping for those segments. That’s how she eventually found her niche in the world of design TV. “I felt like that could be a good thing for me,” she says. And it definitely has been a good thing. Rios’s resume is a lengthy one. Over the years she’s been a mainstay of daytime TV, with regular appearances on The Rachael Ray Show, the Today show, The Wendy Williams Show and The Chew. She’s also hosted a number of shows for just about every lifestyle network there is: Lifetime, HGTV, A&E and FYI. Rios has shared her expertise with a variety of print publications as well. One example is a postHurricane-Sandy makeover she did for her parents’ apartment that was the subject of an eight-page spread in Better Homes and Gardens magazine. Rios and her family became full-time Pennsylvania residents about three years ago when a home in the Poconos that
they used as a respite from New York City living on weekends and holidays became their permanent address. Rios says, while they enjoyed the tranquility of their surroundings there, they began to miss being closer to the restaurants and cultural amenities that a city typically offers. And when it was decided that the boys would attend school in the Lehigh Valley, Rios began looking at properties nearby. She found herself increasingly drawn to Allentown. “I liked the general vibe and how urban it is, how multicultural it is, the fact that there’s a symphony and there’s an art museum and there are big-city things. I felt like this could be a great place for us.”

But when she came across the listing for a three-story, 110-year-old commercialresidential hybrid a few blocks removed from the downtown area, it wasn’t a love at first sight situation. Far from it. “It was not at all exactly what I was looking for,” Rios says. It was big, it was pricey and it was full of stuff; the previous tenant operated a catering business at the site for many years. But the slowdown of the pandemic gave Rios and the owner time to get to know one another, and eventually they found middle ground and struck a deal. The two boys immediately took to the new building—“I kind of feel like it’s a kids’ playground,” Rios says, “there’s just so much space”—and the new city. “They can use their scooters again, which is something they used all the time in [New York]. Here they can scoot around and walk to places.” Meanwhile, Rios and Davies have been testing their DIY mettle around the home. “We’ve had to do projects that are way beyond our skillset, but we’ve been trying to do most of it ourselves to save money and also to make it more of our own space,” says Rios.

But there’s much to be done and they know bringing in professional contractors is inevitable. While the upper floor, which features a staircase leading to a rooftop deck, will remain the family’s residence, Rios has big plans for the other levels. On the second floor, she envisions a lifestyle studio with a working kitchen, a workshop space that could be used for video and photography as well as group activities like cooking classes. The bottom level, as Rios sees it, will be a commissary kitchen that can be rented by those looking for an incubator for their food-based businesses. And not only that: Rios also wants to open a takeout-only café where people can sell what they make “to get the feedback locally from the community on their recipes and what they’re working on.”
I don’t think these live-work spaces have really been done in design TV very much and it’s kind of a new reality for all of us.
Rios is in talks with a production company to document the lengthy renovation process. “I don’t think these live-work spaces have really been done in design TV very much and it’s kind of a new reality for all of us,” she says. “We need to find a way to marry our work and our lives a little deeper than we have before.” She knows, though, that her plans are ambitious. There are zoning and permitting issues to navigate with the city. And Rios has to balance the building rehab with the demands of family life and career. “I didn’t anticipate it would be quite as allconsuming,” she says. But even if plans for the community kitchen and work space don’t pan out and the building’s primary function is a family home, Rios says there won’t be any buyer’s remorse. “Our worst scenario is still a pretty good one.” evetterios.com

Wouldn’t it be nice if major renovation projects really did zip along with the same degree of alacrity as those ubiquitous home improvement shows? Mandee and Alex McEvoy know that’s the stuff of fantasy. Their contemporary home—and the three acres that came with it—has been a work in progress ever since they purchased the property outside Bangor more than four years ago. “It’s been a lot,” says Mandee, who is the creative director at Nazareth-based Martin Guitar.

But she’s not complaining. She sounds genuinely excited when she describes in detail the myriad of projects that have helped to transform the space into a home for her growing family. Amid the construction chaos, Alex and Mandee welcomed two children—son, Proper, 2 ½, and daughter, Suede, seven months. So, yes, it’s a lot. But it’s also fun, Mandee says. And it’s fair to say, since this wasn’t their first foray into the world of reno and demo, they had an idea of what they were getting into when they signed the deed. Alex and Mandee are certain they started dating in 2009. But how they met is somewhat of a mystery. “It’s a running joke,” says Mandee. “All these years later we have no idea who introduced us.” She theorizes that perhaps Myspace was involved. They definitely had some mutual friends. Regardless, the pair of Lehigh Valley natives (she grew up in

Nazareth, and he’s from Pen Argyl) were married in 2015 and bought a home in Nazareth. “We gutted it completely,” Mandee says. They worked on the home for 10 months before moving in. But just as renovations were wrapping up for good several years postpurchase, the McEvoys were getting the itch to move again. “We knew it wasn’t our forever house,” Mandee says. “It was 1,800 square feet or so.”
It was also a historic home (built in 1890) on a busy street. Home number two for the McEvoys would be dramatically different. They knew they wanted something a little more modern, but they weren’t interested in buying what some might deem a typical home in a development, or in building something entirely brand new. “We like to make things our own, rather than start from scratch,” Mandee says.

I’M ALWAYS LOOKING FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT,
modern & unique. She remembers finding the listing by chance on Zillow: a 2,700-square-foot cedar home built in 1985 off the beaten path in Washington Township. “It had potential and I saw that immediately the second we pulled up,” says Mandee. The home had been languishing on the market for about a year; Mandee thinks the state of the indoor pool (translation: not good) may have had something to do with that. The McEvoys bought the home in May of 2018 and got to work. It’s important to point out, there was a lot to like about the property right off the bat. Even though the pool was in rough shape, it wasn’t beyond repair. There was also a tennis court and basketball court behind the home as well as a large outbuilding for storage. And the home itself, with four bedrooms and two and a half baths, boasted many appealing features, such as an open floor plan, oversized windows, hardwood floors, a balcony off the master bedroom and a second-floor loft area.
48
SEP TEMBER 2022 : LEHIGHVALLE YST YLE.COM
For the McEvoys, it was a matter of infusing some TLC. Okay, maybe a lot of TLC. “It was dated,” Mandee says. “It was stuck in the ’80s. No one had really updated anything. Everything was orange and stained wood.” Four years later, there are very few spaces in the home that the McEvoys haven’t altered in some way, and they’ve been doing the vast majority of the work themselves. While neither Mandee nor Alex is formally trained as a general contractor and everything that comes with it, they’re lucky to have quite a few family members who are more than a little handy: “Team Uncle” to the rescue! Mandee says her mother’s three brothers—Jeff, Jerry and Kevin Duckworth— helped them with everything from building various pieces of furniture and a custom vanity for the master bathroom to pouring concrete for the hardscaping. She also names her stepfather, Freddie Solivan, as an instrumental member of the crew. And her mother, Hillary Taylor, is her true sounding board for anything she might need an opinion on. “When I feel like I need someone’s seal of approval, it’s always hers.” It’s a good balance, Mandee says. “I’m the creative. I order everything, see it all, visualize it. And then I lean on them for the expertise of how to actually get it done.” And Alex, she says, besides being a big part of the “muscle,” helps keep her on track and focused on the task (or, more accurately, tasks) at hand.
MAY 2018
One of the toughest jobs was the pool renovation. “That was a room we didn’t even touch for the first two, two and a half years,” Mandee says. “It was out of sight, out of mind.” Initially, she didn’t even want to make the effort. “I was 100 percent sure the pool was not going to be a pool,” she says. “I wanted to fill it in, take the wall down between the house and pool and make it a huge kitchen.” But then, after learning she was pregnant, she imagined her child as a teenager, bemoaning the fact that his mother had deep-sixed what was arguably one of the home’s most desirable features. The pool stayed, much to Alex’s (and probably their future children’s) delight. LEHIGHVALLE YST YLE.COM : SEP TEMBER 2022

The overall goal has been creating a living space that’s contemporary yet homey. “What I don’t do, is do what everyone else is doing,” Mandee says. “I’m always looking for something different, modern and unique.” Massproduced décor and tchotchkes are a no-no (“I’d rather make my own art or have my kids’ art framed on the wall”). She takes inspiration from a lot of places—

“the color of this, the texture of that, the size of that”—and figures out a way to incorporate those elements together. Mandee has been documenting the home’s transformation on Instagram (@ourmodernhome), where a wealth of pictures and videos offers a vibrant timeline of the McEvoys’ journey from the very first project to where they are now. Mandee says she
wants to inspire other DIYers to be bold: “Get a can of paint and removable wallpaper and just try it. What’s the worst that could happen? Make it your own.” But she also strives to keep it real. “We are normal people. We didn’t go to school for this,” Mandee says. “We’re learning it, YouTubing it, asking people with expertise. And we’re doing it in real time. We have two kids, we have full-
DIY CONCRETE COUNTERTOPS
time jobs.” Sometimes she and Alex will only get a few days here and there to work on the house, which means that some undertakings—like renovating the master bathroom—have taken years, not because construction was ongoing the entire time, but because life got in the way. And that only made reaching the finish line (finally!) this past spring that much sweeter. LEHIGHVALLE YST YLE.COM : SEP TEMBER 2022
51
There’s still work to be done, of course; a homeowner’s to-do list is a constantly evolving and changing thing. They’ll be turning their attention to the kitchen soon, and, before you know it, Suede will need a “big kid” room of her own, just like her brother, Proper. But there’s no rush. The McEvoys are playing the long game. “We plan to be here for a very long time,” Mandee says.

WELCOME TO THE DICARLOS’

SEP TEMBER 2022 : LEHIGHVALLE YST YLE.COM
It’s the old restaurant cliché: a family opens a restaurant because they want to extend the utmost in excellent food and warm hospitality. But that’s only the beginning of these kinds of restaurant genesis stories. From there, things get interesting. PA House, which opened in April, is rooted in Italian cuisine, but it’s not your typical undertaking of an Italianinfluenced restaurant. There are no red-and-white checkered tablecloths, no piles of pasta showered with grated cheese. Instead, the place is named after the fact that the owners, Franco (born in Rome, raised in the U.S.) and Rachel (she’s a local!) DiCarlo have owned a house in the Lehigh Valley for more than 20 years and would come out here on the weekends from New York with their children. So, rather than a moniker that immediately tells you the place is Italian, PA House is more personal than that. It’s yet another iteration of the DiCarlos’ Pennsylvania home, one that just so happens to offer an outstanding cocktail menu, prosecco on tap and an imported pizza oven that can crank out 12-inch Neapolitanstyle pizzas in just minutes. (The dough gets a multi-day ferment, naturally.) Franco describes it as “Italian at its heart” and the experience as not fine dining,
but also not casual—a hybrid. “We’re low-key but premium,” he says. (Now that feels Italian.) It’s hard to argue with a house full of such amenities. As Rachel puts it, “We eat here how we like to eat.” In short, it’s the brainchild of people who understand good food, branding and creating a signature vibe—the DiCarlos have a background in luxury fashion. Who else could take a former auto body garage, both preserve and transform the interior, and spin it into a stylish and very open-concept restaurant? “It’s retail, in a way, like fashion, but just a different product,” says Franco. The very visible location right along the Saucon Rail Trail in Hellertown, just off Water Street, is so good for a restaurant, you’ll thank the former auto body
shop for availing itself to the DiCarlos. “When the stars line up, the stars line up,” says Franco. “We wanted people to be able to come right off the trail, whether they’re biking or walking or running, and eat a really good meal, enjoy a cocktail or a glass of wine,” says Franco. (And when you’re trail-adjacent, it makes taking a traditional passeggiata after dinner a great idea, too.) Food has, he says, always been at the back of his mind, and it’s the core of many Italian families. And the service takes a bit of an egalitarian, all-hands-on-deck approach, too. “Everyone runs the food and drinks; there is no real front or back of the house,” says Franco. “It’s a crossfunctional dependency.” The menu won’t leave you even the least remote bit hungry; it’s focused, specific and approachable. The ingredients are simple, but handled with care for stellar results (just ask Franco about the best way to make pizza). Dishes are designed for sharing, starting with the appetizer section, “Divide and Conquer.” Order a bowl of ovenroasted olives, with house-made grilled bread, some avocado hummus (creamy thanks to some crème fraîche) and charcuterie, freshly sliced right on the premises. You’d be forgiven if you didn’t progress too much further than this part of the menu, what with those items plus burrata and, oh, let’s talk about the fries. Admittedly, fries don’t inherently convey Italian-ness. Franco talks about how his family moved to Michigan from Rome when he was a child, and his mother would make French fries often. At PA House, this childhood favorite is hand-cut
(naturally) and arrives with three dipping sauces. But for the innate Italian twist, try the cacio e pepe ones, with cracked pepper, truffle oil, parmesan and a white wine garlic aioli (for dipping). Potatoes are a blank slate, like pasta (which they’re not yet offering, but plan to) and, of course, pizza. The latter, a universally beloved food, is perhaps the ultimate blank slate. Pizza, as Franco says, “crosses all demographics.” Let’s talk about the dough for a moment. Good pizza dough typically undergoes a multi-day fermentation period which helps develop flavor and texture, and that’s true here. The options are creative but not esoteric; people love The Bee Sting, which combines hot soppressata, hot honey and mozzarella and tomato sauce. The Holy Trinity is not religious, per se, unless you are one who adores meat, as sausage, pepperoni and pancetta top this beauty. Fun Guy is a white pizza with arugula and,

you guessed it, various mushrooms. And, of course, there’s the classic Margherita, whose colors invoke the Italian flag and whose flavors are completely spot on. Franco won’t divulge his cheese or tomato sources for the sauce (we’ll grant him those trade secrets), but suffice to say the cheese is creamy and a little tangy and the sauce is balanced, redolent of fresh-tasting tomatoes without being too salty, sweet or acidic. “The basil is covered like a blanket by the mozzarella,” he says. This way, the delicate herb doesn’t burn. The ingredients are as unadulterated as possible. Other menu items include a few salads (Bibb, Caesar and the compulsory arugula and fresh shaved Parm and fennel) and sandwiches, including a burger with meat from Pat LaFrieda, and a veggie sandwich. There’s plenty for vegetarians to be happy with here, too. (Veggie sandwich, veggies on pizzas, veggie appetizers and so forth.) At this PA House, there’s even a yard, where you can order off the menu and sit creekside in Adirondack chairs or at communal picnic tables. Also, lots of houses have an RV of sorts in their driveways or yards, and PA House is no exception. Except here, it’s a 1972 silver Airstream parked outside that also happens to house the DiCarlos’ coffee biz called Hello Joe, open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday (with plans to close seasonally, probably in December and reopen in April). If you’re heading through town on the way to 78 (or elsewhere) for work, it’s perfect for a quick drive-by in the morning, or a leisurely outdoor coffee (or smoothie!) break. Coffee notwithstanding, the outdoor area invites relaxation with food and drink.

Speaking of beverages, we have to pause for a moment and extol that portion of the menu. Beer options are imported and, in a few cases, may be unusual for some; they’ve got the first 100-percent Italian craft beer, Baladin Nazionale blonde ale. It’s a crisp addition with salad or pizza, or both. Please make sure you extensively familiarize yourself with one or more of their options, or order a carafe (a glass and a half) of wine. You’ll experience fresh and creative preparations of aperitifs; maybe a Bellini or Aperol Spritz at lunch, or the perfect Negroni? Clear your calendar. Come to the DiCarlos’ PA House hungry, with friends. Order some food and share. Be prepared to spend a couple of hours here. Time will pass quickly, contentedly. Finish the evening with some Amaro, in true Italian style.

People love the avocado hummus; it’s garnered an early following. In terms of cocktails, people love the Cosmomelon (it’s probably the house-infused watermelon vodka) and the Espresso Martini, the latter of which is so intensely flavorful, it’ll wake up all your taste buds. The Black Manhattan is unusual, with black walnut bitters, dark rye and whiffs of chocolate. Your Bourbon Sour comes with egg white, a move which surprises and delights most people who order it, says Franco.
Tomato sauce, fior di latte mozzarella, spicy sopressata, Mike’s Hot Honey
Notes There’s no takeout yet, but it’s not uncommon for people to dine here and order extra to take home and reheat for later. Where there’s a will, there’s a way to get pizza home.

BEYOND THE MENU
According to Hadid, you can enhance any dish with hummus.
TEXT & PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALISON CONKLIN
Hummus with Chef Steven Hadid Chef Steven Hadid grew up immersed in cooking. His parents owned a popular restaurant in Bethlehem that Hadid worked in. “My mom has always been my best friend,” says Hadid. “Growing up, I always hung out with her.” The lessons he learned in the kitchen with his mom have given him such insight and an appreciation that he carries with him in his own restaurant, Steel City Gyro in Trexlertown. “I didn’t see it then, when I was in my early 20s working for my parents, but now years later, I am grateful for the connections and love that have been created in our community from simply cooking for people and sharing food created from family recipes,” he says. “It is not just a job. It’s cooking, meeting

new friends and, in some cases, those friends becoming family.” Nowadays, both his mother and father work for him at Steel City Gyro, a place he had long dreamt of opening and finally did in the winter of 2018. Steel City Gyro refers to a nickname he was given in high school, which he got because in English his last name means steel. That, and the everpopular Bethlehem Steel in the Lehigh Valley. The menu at Steel City Gyro is full of fresh and flavorful kabobs and gyros, with an atmosphere that is welcoming and warm. Hadid has a charismatic personality, and it is almost guaranteed that, after your first visit, he will remember you and greet you with a huge smile the
next time you stop in. And yes, you will quickly become addicted to everything on menu. Here, Chef Hadid is sharing his recipe for hummus. The bright dish, with fresh lemon, garlic, tahini and blended chickpeas, can be added to almost anything or eaten alone with veggies and pita. “It is funny actually,” he says with a laugh, “my girlfriend always makes fun of me because my tag line is ‘Everything is better with hummus.’ No matter where you are or what you are doing, hummus will make it 10 times better.” Steel City Gyro 6900 Hamilton Blvd., Trexlertown 484.274.6019 | steelcitygyro.net

Enjoy the icy beverage in black-and-white cow-patterned cups.
PIE+TART According to Lisa Yelagin and Anne Gerr, the co-owners of Pie + Tart, iced coffee is a big deal in Australia. And so, 20 years ago, when Yelagin arrived in New York during the wintertime, she was amazed by the number of cafes offering iced coffee. She waited months until the weather was finally warm enough to warrant an icy beverage and was both “flabbergasted and horrified” at the sight of a plain glass filled with old, cold coffee being rapidly watered down by too many ice cubes. “[In Australia], it’s made with a double shot of fresh espresso, poured over vanilla ice cream (yes), a few ice cubes, a healthy slosh of milk, and generously topped off with whipped cream and cocoa powder or chocolate syrup,” explain Yelagin and Gerr. “Now that’s an iced coffee to get excited about.” At their Easton shop, customers can enjoy the drink in their beloved black-andwhite cow-patterned cups. “It’s a fun and whimsical touch that makes them not only delicious but also ever so photogenic,” they share. The pair recommends enjoying the drink with their Pasteis de Nata, world-famous Portuguese egg custard tarts. This fall, which at Pie + Tart is referred to as “High Pie Season,” the shop will celebrate its four-year anniversary. Say Yelagin and Gerr: “We continue to be astounded by how much fun we have, how our customers are truly the best anywhere and how making pie is the best thing in the world.” 444 Northampton St., Easton 484.202.0235 | 2inhand.com
