By Amanda Burkard-Sell, Agriculture Program Manager, Berks County Dept. of Agriculture
FROMFarm
Greater Reading is fortunate to be home to over 1,800 diverse farms on some of the nation’s best farmland, many of which sell their products locally. From summertime sweet corn and tomatoes, to fall pick-your-own apples and pumpkins, to cut-your-own Christmas trees, to locally made cheeses and ice cream, the farms in the Greater Reading area offer a variety of the freshest options for both residents and visitors. There is absolutely no comparison between a local, in-season tomato or peach with those that have been shipped across the country. Connecting with local farmers and producers also empowers buyers to discover and make choices about exactly where their food is coming from and even discover new seasonal foods and recipes.
Greater Reading provides a variety of ways to shop for local foods and agricultural products. Farm stands and weekly fruit and vegetable subscriptions offer in-season produce without the need for a large garden. Farms may have set hours, a porch-pick up option or the honor system. Pick-yourown options allow visitors access to the freshest produce— right off the tree or bush. Some farm businesses offer larger
stores with their own products plus other local producers’ goods, allowing for one-stop shopping and an easy way to get all the ingredients for a delicious meal. The area also is home to several community farmer’s markets, where buyers can connect with a variety of local vendors and ask questions about how their food is grown and produced. Some of these are outdoor seasonal markets and others operate year-round. There’s an option to buy local food that works for everyone. One way for consumers to discover all the local produce and other goods Greater Reading farms have to offer is the Berks County Local Food Map. Launched in 2023, the map is the result of a partnership between the Greater Reading Chamber Alliance (GRCA) and the Berks County Department of Agriculture and serves as an interactive online resource to locate local products. The map and its directory allow users to find the farms and producers in their area, with the ability to filter sites by categories like business type, products offered and accepted forms for payment. That way someone searching for pasture-raised chicken and eggs, pick-your-own strawberries, or locally produced honey can

find exactly where to buy what they are looking for and when it is available. The map also lists the businesses’ hours and contact information and links directly with social media accounts and websites so that consumers can connect with the places they want to visit. It directly links to Google Maps, making it easy to take a road trip around the county for your local food.
Additionally, the Greater Reading area is home to the Rodale Institute, a global leader in organic farming research and education. Rodale, which recently celebrated its 75th anniversary, has long been a pioneer in organic farming research, hosting the longest running field crop trial in the United States and recently adding a new trial testing for the nutrient density of organic versus conventional produce. But Rodale isn’t just a hub for scientific advancements, it also offers free resources and training to farmers, helping to support the local agricultural economy by helping to create the next batch of small farmers. It provides consulting and free technical assistance to support existing local farmers. Rodale has its own farm store in Kutztown, where it sells
its products and those from other local farmers. It seeks to supplement, rather than compete with other local farms, specifically growing and supplying products to fill in the gaps, rather than provide what is already there.
Buying local not only provides access to the freshest food, but also supports the entire local economy, as the funds spent locally are reinvested back into community businesses and services. The environment benefits from reduced packaging and transportation needs and supporting local farms helps to maintain the farmland and green space that is part of the scenic quality of the Greater Reading area. Buying directly from local farmers is a win for the entire community and there is no better place to take advantage of this than Greater Reading.

MarketON THE
Greater Reading real estate attractive, diverse
The satisfaction of promoting home ownership and assisting homeowners in our county is priceless. I have the privilege of working with many families that, for one reason or another, don't think that they are able to make their homeownership dreams come true. I've been a real estate investor for 28 years and a real estate agent for six years now and have learned that the real estate market fluctuates every year or every few years. It can be:
• A seller's market - more buyers than sellers;
• neutral - similar number of buyers and sellers or;
• a buyer's market - more sellers than buyers. When I first started as an agent the market favored the buyers. Requesting home inspections, getting some seller assistance to help the buyer with closing costs and paying asking or even below asking price was the norm. For the past three to four years, the market has been favoring sellers. I found myself working with sellers and investors who have been making great profits on the sale of their properties. On the other hand, the buyers struggle to purchase homes because of the low inventory and high demand for properties. Many desirable homes are receiving multiple offers and many times, offers that are above asking price. The number of single-family homes on the market in Greater Reading has been decreasing over the last three years. This is why, when a buyer ends up being the winning offer, we have a great celebration!
Many buyers and sellers ask if this is a good time to sell or buy. The answer that I give them is, it is always a good time. This is because the future is uncertain and there is always a property destined to be for someone ready to make it their home or to own it as an investment property. Sellers need to evaluate their main reason for selling a home at a particular time and evaluate the current market. Buyers need to consider that paying rent is paying someone else's mortgage, and when they are done renting, they leave empty handed. Investing and buying real estate is a fantastic opportunity.
Over the last few years, properties in Greater Reading have continued to increase in value every year. Even though interest rates are not as low as they were a few years back, they are normal based on a historical average for the last 49 years. Compared to other counties that surround us, Greater Reading still has attractive home prices and diverse neighborhoods depending on preference, whether you like the country, the suburbs or the city.
Opportunities come and go. Therefore, when there’s one in front of you, it's important that you seize it when your time comes. Staying positive in this market is a must because it can be challenging depending on the side you’re on. As a real estate agent, you must encourage clients, be there for them, provide support and let them know that their opportunity will come.

New Castle Lawn & Landscape grows (literally) in Greater Reading
By Tricia Williams, Marketing Manager, New Castle Lawn & Landscape
New Castle Lawn & Landscape began as a small side hustle in 1988 by two teenage boys on New Castle Drive in Shillington, Pa. The company grew and was officially named New Castle Lawn & Landscape in 1994. At the time of inception, President and co-founder Brian Cuccaro was walking the neighborhood mowing and maintaining as many lawns as he could handle storing equipment out of his, then business partner’s, parent’s garage. The company truly had a small and humble beginnings from a two-man crew and has grown to a $10,000,000 business employing nearly 90 individuals.
In 1999, the business purchased land in Mohton and built a small shop. Soon after, New Castle Lawn & Landscape became incorporated. We have not been without challenges. During the 2008 market crash, the business was forced to lay everyone off. 2018 was a pivotal year for us as we implemented a leadership team and The Traction Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) by Gino Wickman. The very next year,

Stellar House Gift Shop offers pop-up shops, unique buys
By Adriene Billet, Owner, Stellar House Gift Shop
We opened Stellar House Gift Shop in Boyertown, Pa., in October 2021. The shop specializes in colorful, hilarious and unique gifts, pop culture, greeting cards and on occasion, specialty pop ups.
I was born and raised in York, Pa., but prior to moving to Greater Reading, I lived in Philadelphia for 17 years. My husband’s job at the time was relocating to Boyertown, and we moved with them. The moment we drove up the main street in Boyertown, I just felt the potential. So much so, we purchased our home on Philadelphia Avenue, and I turned our living room into Stellar House Gift Shop. I wanted to see a store in town that had sort of the quirky and curated vibes I missed from Philadelphia.
My original business plan was to be a quick “grab and go” gift shop, but it’s turned into so much more. I now throw small- and large-scale pop ups and events where I completely transform the store from floor to ceiling and carry limited merchandise on the occasional weekend. My favorite thing about Greater Reading is the location. It’s a relatively easy trip to and from Philadelphia, Lehigh Valley, Chester County and Lancaster County. The support from surrounding communities is great. Social media has connected me with so many other local businesses.
My advice to new business owners is to do your research before jumping in. Figure out if your business has a market in your area, if there is a need or if it’s oversaturated. Figure out what sets you apart, develop a marketing plan and be involved in your community.

Being such a close-knit community, you get so much support when families start a business. We have many great resources, like the Greater Reading Chamber Alliance as well as the SBA who we were fortunate to be able to work with when we opened and continue to work with to help our growth.

Seeing the changing needs of my students over the course of my 30 year career as an educator prompted me to seek out additional tools to teach skills that lead to improved mental health. The turning point came when I realized this work needed to be delivered daily as a classroom integration. This

Greater Reading schools understand the need for this kind of programming and have a “prevention over intervention” mindset. Preparing children for learning is a way to improve academic achievement and the best way to do it is through the language of movement.

Tell us a little how you are making Greater Reading a better place.
For me, being an active local shopper is hugely important. Ensuring we stimulate the local economy is essential for now and the future. My favorite place on Penn Ave is Muddy Creek, and I love the Fairgrounds Farmers Market in Temple!
Volunteering my time is also something I enjoy doing and have volunteered across several organizations such as Helping Harvest and Children’s Home of Reading. With the world of education still suffering from the lasting effects of COVID-19, I plan to return to school districts and help with afterschool activities when possible.
What do you want outsiders to know about the Greater Reading community?
Reading isn’t like any other local community. People who have lived here all their lives are such supporters and believe that the Greater Reading area will continue to thrive and are thankful to call Reading their home. With that, they welcome new residents with open arms and warm hearts. I have made lifelong friends here and can truly say I owe that to Reading and its diversity.

Tell us a little how you are making Greater Reading a better place.
Anthony: I am helping create more beauty, light elegance and excellence for our Reading residents through Barrio Alegría. The name of our community engagement nonprofit translates literally to “Neighborhood of Happiness,” and we believe that joy, fulfillment and chasing your dreams can be revolutionary acts. We empower our local artists to share their skills with the public and invite neighbors to explore their own talents through the universal language of art. I believe that everyone has a gift and it is their duty to share it with others.
What do you want outsiders to know about the Greater Reading community?
Anthony: So many people have come to this place— immigrants, transplants, students—and have truly found their home here. There is so much potential in this area for entrepreneurs, artists, journalists and other people who want to make a positive impact. It also is surprisingly not a bad location for rock climbing and bouldering.
Name an organization that you think is doing amazing work in Greater Reading that you want others to know about.
Anthony: The South of Penn SOP Initiative is doing some fantastic work in Reading’s southside by helping neighbors create a community they want to see. The SOP is helping amplify the stories and aspirations of longtime residents and newcomers alike. They are not only listening to neighbors' concerns, but they are also getting to know them, and they are taking direct action in making dreams come true. They do clean-ups, block parties, movie nights, community conversations and more. I wish more organizations were like them!
What are your favorite local activities to do with your family?
Tatiana: My family shows their love through cooking delicious food for each other, and this translates into our favorite activity to do together—going out to eat. Whenever there is a new local restaurant opening, I make sure to invite my loved ones to come out to try it with me. To us, there is nothing better than sharing a meal while catching up on our busy lives. Living in Reading provides a neverending list of new places and cuisines to explore together.
What about Greater Reading makes it great to raise your family?
Tatiana: Making the conscious choice with my partner to not have children, we view the connections we’ve made within our community as an extension of our family of three. Our cat is family. Cultivating and raising a family within our community here is great because Greater Reading is full of diverse cultures and perspectives. Being a part of Greater Reading’s wealth of diversity helps us grow as people and understand others.
Name your favorite Greater Reading hidden gem.
Tatiana: Since my favorite local activity is exploring different places to eat, it makes sense that my favorite hidden gem is a Colombian restaurant that opened during COVID-19 and was able to thrive past the pandemic. Cafe de Colombia, on Penn Street, is my favorite place to drink delicious coffee, have fresh baked goods like my favorite pandebono, and have a little taste of my family’s native country. I recommend it to anyone visiting Reading, and each time my friends rave about how much they loved the experience.

What advice would you give to someone who has moved to Greater Reading from outside the area?
Embrace the unique history going back centuries. Here there’s a little of every important era in American history. Also, if you’re into outdoor activities, this area is great. You can go to the mountains or beach on any given weekend.

What are your favorite local activities to do with your family?
When the kids weren’t walking yet, we loved to walk at the Reading Public Museum and trails in Wyomissing. We live right by both and have the beauty of it surrounding us. Now that the kids are older, we love walking Penn Avenue and visiting restaurants! We were blessed with polite little babes so going out to eat has been a lifesaver—it was something that my husband and I did when we were dating (total foodies!) and now we can keep doing it! It has been so fun to take the kids to the local parks, walk in the creek at the Museum, ride the train at Colebrookdale Railroad, and by far their favorite activity—visiting the Pagoda. When we drive through the City of Reading my son yells “There’s mama’s work!” and then even louder “THE PAGODA!” He knows where I went to school (RACC) and makes sure to tell me every time, so I don’t forget. They also enjoy visiting the Yocum Institute for the Arts for their children’s shows.
As they get older, we will be able to stay longer at the Reading Fightin Phils games, Reading Royals games, and more. I want them to enjoy everything that Greater Reading has to offer.
What about Greater Reading makes it great to raise your family?
There is SO MUCH TO DO! As a working mom and dad, we know it’s hard to find time (and activities) that the

kids might want to do but we pop the kids in their seats and drive for 10 to 20 minutes and boom, something to do. Whether it is the places local to us, or a short drive to pick apples and pet goats at Weavers Orchard, we can go anywhere. And if it rains? No problem. The Works has an indoor crazy-space for kids ready to expel some energy.
When I was growing up, we lived in a rural community— cows, farms, small main street. As many young people who are “bored” with their hometown, I wanted to do more. And it was when I finally left high school that I realized everywhere around my hometown did offer more. I can now go to a super fun and robust main street, buy local art, make art, meet new people, meet up with people I already know and find similar interests with those around me. You always can find a friendly face near you ready to talk about what interests them and what they do in the area. I’m raising my kids to be one of those friendly faces and love where they live.
Name your favorite Greater Reading hidden gem. There is a beautiful walking path in Wyomissing that is a huge grove of trees. You see it coming upon you as you’re walking, but only when you get closer do you see the opening for people to walk through. It is completely shaded, with a field of wildflowers to the right. It is like walking through a secret and magical forest. The walking trails around Wyomissing are my favorite, and I almost always walk somewhere new.

What is it about Greater Reading that made you want to stay here after graduation?
I chose to stay in the Greater Reading area for a couple of reasons—the close-knit communities, the access to education, the lifestyle and the areas around me.
Greater Reading gives you that family and friendly atmosphere, which played a significant role in my decision to attend Alvernia University. Greater Reading also has great access to higher education, and that has helped define me. I was able to graduate with three bachelor’s degrees and a Masters in Business Administration (MBA).
Greater Reading offers a balanced lifestyle with a blend of urban amenities and a more relaxed atmosphere. Cultural attractions, shops, restaurants and entertainment venues support a satisfactory quality of life. Most importantly, for someone who enjoys hiking, the area's natural beauty is a significant draw.
What advice would you give recent graduates starting their careers in Greater Reading? You can develop a life that is fulfilling and enjoyable in your new era of life by being proactive, open to new experiences and involved in your community. Take part in volunteer opportunities or community activities that match your interests—allowing you to give back to the community while meeting new people.
Name your favorite Greater Reading event, festival to attend.
I have attended a couple of favorite events in the Greater Reading area. Being a sports fan and having the Reading Royals and the Fightin Phils right here in Reading is great because I can experience a sports game with friends and family. I would also have to say West Reading's Fall Festival and Craft Pretzel & Beer Fest, but I have also enjoyed attending the First Friday Events the city has hosted.
If someone is visiting the Greater Reading area, what are some things or places you would tell them to experience while they are here?
Coming to the Greater Reading area, you must check out the centerpiece of Reading, the Pagoda. Visit restaurants like Chatty Monks and other breweries in the West Reading area including The Brick House Pub, Mom Chaffe's and Nonno Alby's!

I love the small-town community atmosphere with the city accessibility. We have the amenities of a large city but the quiet nature of a small town. My position is a remote position, but my husband and I elected to buy [a home] here because we loved the community.
What advice would you give recent graduates starting their careers in Greater Reading?
Consider remote careers. Also realize there are many great opportunities in our area that sometimes go unnoticed. Working remote allows for the flexibility of having a home life balance, and this area is great for that.

If someone is visiting the Greater Reading area, what are some things or places you would tell them to experience while they are here?
I would first direct them to the Reading Public Museum. There is so much to do there, from the Planetarium and Arboretum to the Museum itself. If they were into sports, probably the Santander Arena for a hockey game or the Fightin Phils for a baseball game.

Alicia: I am originally from Royersford, Pa., which is in Montgomery County.
Brandon: I am originally from Jim Thorpe, Pa., which is in Carbon County.
What is it about Greater Reading that made you want to stay here after graduation?
Alicia: My husband and I met at Kutztown, and we have a lot of friends who remain in the area. We did leave the Greater Reading area initially, as I attended grad school in Pittsburgh, but we came straight back after my program was done. Much of my dad’s family is still in and around Greater Reading, as well. We also got very connected to our church, Trinity Lutheran Kutztown, during undergrad and knew it was where we wanted to continue to attend. The Greater Reading area also has so much to offer, from arts programming to agriculture and beyond.
Brandon: We mainly wanted to be here because this is where our friend group is, and the arts and theater scene here is great.
What advice would you give recent graduates starting their careers in Greater Reading?
Alicia: Get to know the people around you. One of the unique things about Greater Reading is that it not only attracts those from outside of it, but also it retains a lot of natives. Your coworkers are going to give you suggestions
on where to go, whether it’s to eat or to be entertained. Take their advice, but also don’t be afraid to explore the area around your workplace because the area is constantly changing and evolving, which is so cool!
Brandon: Connections! Make connections now. Talk to people about your career goals. I’ve always found people in Greater Reading are willing to help you and give you advice as long as you ask for it.
Name your favorite Greater Reading event, festival to attend.
Alicia: I always love the Kutztown Folk Festival! Any performance by The Ringgold Band is a highlight!
Brandon: The Kutztown Folk Festival is great! I also attended the ReadingFilmFEST in 2016, having had a short film competing in the festival.
If someone is visiting the Greater Reading area, what are some things or places you would tell them to experience while they are here?
Alicia: Crystal Cave and the Pagoda are often the ones that come to mind first. Hawk Mountain is also one that I grew up going to every year with my parents and is great in the fall. I would also recommend that someone should go to any of the county parks/nature preserves because the area has many to offer!

What advice would you give recent graduates starting their careers in Greater Reading?
Make friends! Although Greater Reading feels big compared to rural Maryland, everyone still knows each other. You never know who is going to be asked to vouch for your work ethic or your attitude, so make sure you’re as present and authentic to yourself and others as possible.

If someone is visiting the Greater Reading area, what are some things or places you would tell them to experience while they are here?
I think if you’re in the area, you must attend at least one theatrical performance—whether it’s a musical from the theater departments at Albright College or Reading Area Community College, or a play reading at GoggleWorks! There are too many places to list where humanity is on display and it’s amazing to witness.

The mountains called them
By Audrey Krupiak, Assistant Director of Communications & Marketing, GRCA
My husband and I acquired our log home in 2020 from my grandfather. It is nestled in the woods in Mertztown next to my childhood home. It had always been a dream to one day own the log home that I watched my family build as a little girl. During construction, I have vivid memories of my sister and I helping point the block foundation of the pole barn on the property.
It is a dream come true not only to own this home, but also to give my boys the land to spend time in nature. It does

not matter the season, we are outside. In the spring and summer, the boys spend time riding electric dirt bikes, playing on their playground, jumping on the trampoline or finding bugs. We often see deer, hummingbirds, foxes and recently had a bear sighting! In the fall they play in large mounds of leaves that are eventually pushed down our hilly driveway with a backhoe. In the winter months, the boys are outside as often as possible sledding, building snowmen or working on an igloo. These days are often followed by warming up by the fireplace with a cup of hot chocolate.
Our home is located less than 10 minutes from Bear Creek Mountain Resort. In the winter, at least once a week you will find us at the mountain skiing and snowboarding. As a winter-loving family, it is convenient to live so close to a ski resort. When possible, I try to slip away to the resort for a massage or facial while I take in the mountain views.
Although we live in a rural area, our access to Reading and more urban areas of the county are within 20 minutes. This easy access makes my commute to downtown Reading for work a breeze. I travel down the mountainside through

the farm fields of Oley and quickly find myself in the city. My drive to work provides the most beautiful sunrises with the backdrop of the mountains. Often during the farmers’ growing season we will swing by a local farm on the way home for fresh produce or pick-your-own strawberries.
As a family we can take a quick drive to see an exhibit at the Reading Public Museum, stop by the Nature Place and play on the natural playground, play in the arcade at The Works, watch a minor league sports game at Santander Arena/FirstEnergy Stadium or grab a bite to eat in West Reading. Our county’s close proximity to major metropolitan areas, like Philadelphia, allows us to get to a Phillies or Eagles games to cheer on our favorite sports teams in about an hour drive.
This is our forever home. My husband and I are both Greater Reading natives and are in awe of everything this county has to offer our family. We have never quite experienced an area where we have the opportunity to live so rural, to the point where we had a bear in the front yard, while still only being 20 minutes away from everything the city of Reading has to offer.
The city spoke to them
By Zach Bell & Kyra Denlinger, Co-Founders, Bell Media Group
We moved into our house on Carsonia Avenue in 2017. We were drawn in by the old-world charm of the home, built in 1925, as well as the friendly, walkable neighborhood. Both of us grew up in Shillington, so we had a general familiarity with the City of Reading but didn’t anticipate all the benefits that we would soon enjoy.
The home is cozy and quiet, with features from the turn of the century including original French windows, hardwood floors, a stone fireplace and stained glass. Another feature we love to point out to first-time guests is the antique, mounted Coca-Cola bottle opener fixed to a drawer in the kitchen.
When we opened our marketing agency, Bell Media Group, in 2019, our position became even more ideal. Located
in the hills in North Reading, our home is only a stone’s throw away from local universities, the courthouse, and various industrial hubs as well as arts and entertainment staples like GoggleWorks, Santander Arena and the Doubletree by Hilton, Reading. Our ability to attend conferences, meetings and events has helped us build connections and create more visibility for our growing business. Plus, since a critical component of our business model includes coming onsite to clients’ locations, we are positioned perfectly to capture real-life stories and special moments without the hassle of long drive times.
And while the city lies just over the Lindberg Viaduct, ample opportunities for hiking, biking and walking also abound just a few blocks away.
We also love to spend time outdoors together, and with the addition of a new dog to our family, we are even more grateful for our quick and easy access to parks and recreation. Each morning before work, we walk our pup around Crystal Lake and play with a tennis ball on the enclosed basketball court. On weekends, we often hike the Mudcatcher Trail that rambles past Antietam Lake through lush, woodsy hills. On clear days, you might find us up at the Pagoda taking in the sights or strolling the adjacent trails.
We often comment on the odd beauty of our living situation and neighborhood. Although we are mere miles from the epicenter of Reading, our neighborhood is dotted with majestic, sweeping trees and bushes that explode into color every spring. It’s not unusual to spot hawks or even an eagle circling above our porch.
We have no plans on the horizon to leave the area, but life tends to move fast, and we aren’t sure what the future holds for our family and our business. But no matter where our next steps lead them, we’ll always have a special place in our hearts for this chapter of our lives and our ability to experience the two unique, special and beautiful sides of Reading.
