2 Eight warning signs of gluten intolerance that you shouldn’t ignore
DIZZINESS- If, after eating, you start feeling brain
fog, disorientation, and a strange feeling of being off-balance, there might be a chance that gluten may be the culprit.
3 4 5 6 7 8
MOOD SWINGS- If your body is feeling miserable
from the food you eat, your mood can similarly shift in the same way! HEADACHES- If eating comes with a headache
roughly 30 to 60 minutes after the meal, then it might be time to look into a gluten allergy. ITCHINESS- If your intestines are having issues
processing the gluten you’ve eaten, the intestines may become inflamed and manifest on the skin. FIBROMYALGIA- According to doctors, avoiding foods
with gluten can alleviate symptoms of Fibromyalgia. CHRONIC FATIGUE- If your mind and body are
reacting to the gluten, it can make sense that a sense of fatigue takes over. SHAREABLY.CO

STOMACHACHE- If you’re feeling stomach pains after
eating foods heavy in gluten, it could be a major sign of gluten intolerance.
LACTOSE INTOLERANCE- If you are lactose intolerant,
then the chances of finding yourself with a gluten intolerance also increases. There is a specific type of sugar found in lactose foods that can trigger digestive issues and can worsen symptoms of gluten intolerance.

Low Back Pain BY JEREMY KUSHNER, PT, MPT, OCS
Low back pain (LBP) has been coined a modern epidemic in the literature.1,2 84% of individuals will experience LBP at one point in their lives.3 Our goal when treating LBP is to develop a program to relieve your pain and maintain a healthy spine. HOW CAN WE HELP?: Our treatment is individuallytailored to each patient and includes a thorough evaluation to correctly identify impairments prior to initiating treatment. It is, by no means, “a one-sizefits-all” program. Physical therapists are qualified to be this first health care professional you see regarding your LBP. The current research demonstrates that early physical therapy intervention is more effective and demonstrates a significant cost reduction ($2736) as compared to delayed physical therapy as well as is cost-effective alternative to surgical and other types of conservative intervention.3,4,5 WHAT IS IMPORTANT KNOW WHEN YOU HAVE LOW BACK PAIN?: The earlier you receive treatment, the better the
outcome. Movement is the key to health with low back pain. Having physical therapy promotes self-efficacy and reduces fear of movement. Advanced imaging, such as
MRI or CT, is not always necessary to treat low back pain6 as the results of these images do not always dictate how we treat the spine. Several research articles revealed that the findings on MRIs do not predict who has LBP in acute or chronic situations, and also did not predict success or nonsuccess in rehabilitation.7,8 WHAT IS PHYSICAL THERAPY FOR LOW BACK PAIN?:
Our physical therapists will provide an evidence-based treatment approach that includes manual therapy, motor control exercises, progressive endurance exercises, repeated range of motion exercises, spinal decompression or traction, and other modalities to help manage your pain. The above interventions are heavily researched in our profession and some demonstrate strong evidence for a successful outcome.1 WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PHYSICAL THERAPY FOR LOW BACK PAIN? Early physical therapy has been
shown to reduce pain, health care costs, the need to take prescription medicine, sick leave from work, and advanced imaging. It may improve your function and provide for a more effective prognosis.1,3,4,5,6 Contact Jeremy.kushner@sluhn.org for references.

The Charcoal Craze
before they can harm the body. Yes, you read that right — adsorb. Adsorption is not the same as absorption. During absorption, a substance will soak up another substance. During adsorption, a substance will simply bind to another substance. So, think of activated charcoal as a magnet for all the bad things in/on your body.
It seems like activated charcoal is the latest craze in the health world. Even though it’s reportedly been used for medicinal purposes since around 1550 BC, many people are just starting to learn about its impressive benefits for both health and beauty. Before we delve into the many benefits, it’s important to note that activated charcoal isn’t the same as the charcoal you use to barbecue with. Although it is similar, grilling charcoal should never be ingested since it’s loaded with toxins and chemicals. In general, charcoal is made from wood, coconut shells, or other substances. It becomes “activated charcoal” when high temperatures combine with gas or another similar “activating agent” to expand its surface area. This makes the charcoal’s surface very porous and gives it a negative electric charge. If you remember back to science class, opposites attract! That negative charge attracts positively charged toxins, chemicals, gas, and poisons. SO, HOW EXACTLY DOES ACTIVATED CHARCOAL WORK? Activated charcoal is a powerful detoxifying agent. Whether it’s used topically or internally, the activated charcoal will adsorb nearby toxins, chemicals, and poisons

FOLLOW A GOOD SKIN CARE REGIMEN Cleanse your face daily with a gentle cleanser, both in the morning and at night. This will keep your skin clean, soft and free of pore-clogging debris. When buying a cleanser, avoid those with high alcohol content and other drying agents. Apply a good quality moisturizer over your entire face, neck, hands and legs twice daily. This will help prevent dry and aging skin. Exfoliate your skin once a week with a gentle facial scrub. This will get rid of dead skin cells and encourage cell renewal, making your skin look younger.

When you are past your mid-20s, use products with retinol, peptides and antioxidants. Retinol promotes an increase of collagen and elastic production. Peptides can stimulate collagen production and cell repair to help you get younger-looking skin. Antioxidants will protect your skin from the sun and speed up the natural skin repair system.
3
WEAR SUNSCREEN EVERYDAY Sunscreen is the ultimate anti-aging tool recommended by beauty experts. Be it summer, winter, autumn or rainy days, you must not leave your home without applying a good quality sunscreen on any exposed body parts. Apply an SPF 15 (or greater) sunscreen every day, even in the winter. For maximum anti-aging benefits, make sure to apply sunscreen on your ears, neck, legs and hands along with your face.

GET YOUR BEAUTY SLEEP DAILY To stay looking young for years, get seven to eight hours of beauty sleep daily without fail. In fact, sleep is considered the most powerful rejuvenating treatment to maintain youthfulness.

When you sleep, adrenaline and corticosteroid levels drop and the body starts to produce growth hormone. During this time, the repair and growth process of cells occurs. If you don’t get enough sleep, this function is impaired and leads to inflammation that causes many signs of aging like wrinkles, dull complexion and fines lines. A good night’s sleep also has many health benefits like better memory, mood, attention and concentration as well as a reduced risk of heart attack and stroke.
5
EXERCISE DAILY Exercise is good for your body and mind. Regular exercise improves blood flow and keeps your skin healthy and vibrant. It also regulates your hormones and promotes proper sleep. According to a study published in the journal Circulation, exercise has anti-inflammatory potential and decreases the risk of developing inflammatory diseases like heart disease and obesity. Exercise also combats the loss of stamina, muscle strength, balance and bone density that increases with age. Do some sort of physical activity for 20 to 30 minutes daily. Activities that can help slow down the aging process are running, walking, dancing, cycling, gardening and even housework. Aerobic exercise classes and yoga also help a lot.

GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK FROM STRESS Several studies have shown that stress causes physical changes in the body that can accelerate aging. When you are under stress, hormonal changes occur that can cause blood pressure to rise and the heart to beat faster. Stress can even cause anxiety, depression, insomnia, weight gain, fatigue and many other conditions that will surely make you look older than your age. First, you must try to control the level of stress in your life. If you are under stress, take steps to manage it with deep breathing, walking outside amid nature, practicing yoga, meditating or indulging in any other activity that can divert your thoughts from the stressful situation and help calm your mind. If you have difficulty controlling or managing stress, consult a specialist or seek out a support group.
EAT RIGHT Healthy skin starts with healthy eating. Include more antioxidant-rich foods in your diet. Antioxidants help increase cellular regeneration and protect collagen, thus keeping your skin firm and wrinkle-free. Ensure adequate intake of essential fatty acids, such as those found in flaxseed and fatty fish. These healthy fats help your skin function properly and aid in tissue repair. Eat five servings of fruits and vegetables and 3 servings of whole grains daily. This will provide protein, calcium, vitamin D, iron, zinc and other essential minerals that your body needs to function properly.
8
STAY HYDRATED Water is the foundation of young-looking skin; hence you need to drink an ample amount of water throughout the day. It helps keep your skin hydrated and moisturized, making it look younger and healthier. Plus, water also will aid digestion, improve your energy and concentration, and flush toxins from your body. When you don’t drink enough water, your skin can become dry, dull and dehydrated, leading to issues like fine lines and wrinkles, and chapped lips. To stay hydrated, drink eight to 10 glasses of water each day. Along with water, you can drink green tea, fruit juices and vegetables juices, or eat fruits and vegetables rich in water content.

Dealing With Caregiver Depression WWW.MARIASPLACE.COM
Many caregivers experience depression. If you are experiencing symptoms, know that you aren’t alone and that help is available. Depression is a serious condition, but one that is treatable. Support groups are helpful but they don’t solve everything. While we may be full of advice, I’m sure what you’d really like would be for all these people to come clean your house, give your loved one a bath, go to the liquor store for you…(just kidding, I’m trying to talk about avoiding horrible effects of depression, alcohol is a depressant!) There are always mixed feeling for a lot of people when it comes to taking medication. Here is my take though on why it should be considered… Depression causes a chemical change in your brain. The longer that chemical change exists, the harder it is to get everything back in balance. When you are caring for someone with a disease like Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, that depression will hit you in waves – first when the diagnosis is giving, every time there is a decline, etc. There is not a way to avoid it. I’m going to follow this up with information about anticipatory grief.
If you are depressed, the person in your care, no matter how confused is going to be affected. There is no shame in admitting that you need help with depression and anxiety when you are caring for a loved one. There is no shame in asking your doctor if he or she thinks you may benefit from an antidepressant. There are many antidepressants on the market today. Just like any other medication – antidepressants are not a “one size fits all”. Other diagnoses, allergies, etc. must be taken into consideration when prescribing. Here is why I believe medication is sometimes necessary – I already described how the longer the depression exists, the harder it is to reverse or balance the chemicals in our brain. For some people support groups, talk therapy, eating healthier, exercising (which are all good ideas) aren’t enough and that medication may be just what you need. As with many other medications, it should be started out slowly and tapered back off when appropriate – it doesn’t mean you need to take it for the rest of your life but that also doesn’t mean that if you begin to feel better that you should discontinue use, especially if the environment, caregiving situation has not changed. Forgoing medical treatment for depression is not being strong, it is being naive. Seeking treatment may be the best thing you can do for you and the person you are caring for.
