Try putting John Lux into a box, and you’ll be left with a container that won’t close. As owner of Deluxx Bikes, a bike shop in downtown Lebanon, Lux follows a prescription for business ownership built on honesty, respect, and passion—but that’s just a sliver of the story.
Sitting in a rather impressive catcher’s squat while piecing together a high-performance Syncros road bike with electric gear shifting, Lux says, “I don’t sell bikes. I sell freedom.”
He reminisced on his days as a young kid in south Lebanon in the summertime, hopping on his bike first thing in the morning and staying out until the streetlights came on. It was that or hang around the house waiting for his mom to assign him chores.
“Your bike was the only way you were getting to hang out with your buddies,” he says.
That sense of freedom has transcended time. Lux has run Deluxx bikes for more than a decade and a half (he’s not the kind of guy who can spit out the exact date, or even year, he opened shop, because he’s always looking ahead). Between selling and repairing bikes of all kinds, he manages to find time to ride for a couple of hours every day. Don’t believe him? Just look at his knuckles. Aside from a tattoo that reads “hold fast,” he’s got a semi-permanent cycler’s tan line across the tops of his fingers that doesn’t lie.
Over the years, Lux has competed in his fair share of races—BMX, road cycling, you name it. Through all of life’s tribulations, he’s come out with a need to keep training, even if it’s not for a race. Lux emphasizes, “You’re only going to be as good as your last ride.”
From wide-eyed newbies to experienced riders of any age, Deluxx Bikes has options for bikes and gear that suit everyone. Urban, road, and mountain bike brands include Bianchi, Jamis, and Scott. He also has DK and Verde BMX bikes–not to mention historic USA level BMX jerseys framed on the wall from his own Deluxx Bikes team–as well as Serfas e-bikes.
As for the shop itself, you’ll find Lux in there during all seasons and almost every day of the week. That’s nothing new. It’s been 10 years since he finished chemotherapy for stage three non-Hodgkin’s large B-cell lymphoma, a blood cancer for which he only took off 14 days in total for treatment. While he does see himself potentially doing something besides running Deluxx Bikes in his later years, he appreciates it for the life it has created.
“I stay humble because it can all go away tomorrow,” Lux says.
Lux has a self-deprecating disposition, going so far as to call himself an “acquired taste,” but he relishes in the fact that he’s an eccentric individual. “I’m probably the only bike shop you’ll come into that has two boxes of civil war books behind the counter,” he says. There’s yet another piece to his complex flavor.
Growing up around his dad’s automotive garage, where World War I and II veterans sat and talked in the front room, Lux saw a side of the world that shaped him. “For an 11-year old kid to sit in a haze of Chesterfield and Lucky Strike smoke, you get to see people’s personalities. Maybe that’s why I’m so into history,” he says. “In the end, we’re all in the same fight.”
Today, Lux remains extraordinarily proud of his son, who carries his name and plans to be a history teacher after graduate school.
While Lux may be all about bikes from a certain vantage point, any customer of his quickly finds out you get a “no bulls**t” version of quick, quality customer service that highlights the other parts of him, too. It would be a dishonest portrayal to publish an article of Lux with no expletives, even if censored.
As for customers looking for a shop that they can trust, Lux advises, “Don’t buy a bike from a guy that doesn’t ride. This is a very passion-based thing.”
And don’t be afraid to talk to him—about riding, about history, about anything, (yes, even the Grateful Dead). “I got the gift of gab,” Lux says. “That’s the one thing going for me.”

Kristen Zellner has seven pets, a pet store, and a lifelong allergy to animals.
“The bond you have with your animals makes it worth it,” says Zellner, owner of Abrams & Weakley General Store for Animals, Harrisburg.
For allergy sufferers who, like Zellner, can’t imagine life without Ziggy or Luna, these changes to your home can improve indoor air quality, and your family’s quality of life.
Constantly congested? Maybe you’re allergic to your beloved pet. “Kids go to college and feel better,” says Penn State Health allergist Dr. Timothy Craig. “Then they come home with their laundry, and their symptoms flare. That’s how they realize it’s the dog or cat.”
Proteins from pet’s dead skin cells stick to furniture, walls, counters, and bedding. Those proteins irritate airways and eyes, and they travel by sticking to your skin and clothing.
You spend up to one third of the day in the bedroom, breathing in all those airborne and surface allergens. Encase the pillows, mattress, and box spring in allergy covers. Wash them weekly, plus the blankets and bedspread. For bulky bedspreads, consider allergy-proof duvet covers that match the décor.
Those allergens lurk in saliva, too, so throw pet toys in the laundry or dishwasher. Zellner also regularly washes the pet bedding and towels.
Replace carpeted floors with hardwood, vinyl, or tile. If that’s not possible, clean carpets regularly, and dry steam clean annually. If you prefer a covered floor, discover the convenience and style of washable rugs. Also, hang blinds or lightweight, washable window treatments. Choose easy-clean leather, wood, metal, or plastic furniture, and encase upholstered pieces in washable slipcovers. Declutter by clearing out knickknacks. Give furniture arrangements lots of space for thorough cleaning.
Create pet-free zones by limiting pets to spaces with hardened or easy-clean surfaces and furniture. It’s not easy, but try training or an indoor boundary system. Even if it breaks your heart, don’t let them share the bed. Some experts advise regular brushing or bathing pets every week, but be careful of overbathing that can dry out their skin. Sprays that claim to denature allergy-causing proteins aren’t backed by convincing data, notes Craig.
Run a HEPA-filter vacuum weekly, and clean countertops, floors, walls, and windows regularly. Don’t give cleaning chores to the family’s allergyprone members. “I give women certificates saying that because of their allergies, their husband has to do all the cleaning,” jokes Craig. If the allergic one must do the cleaning, wear a high-quality mask. And from Zellner, keep that mask handy for cleaning the litter box, and use a low-dust kitty litter.
HEPA-equipped air purifiers can extract pet allergens from the air, but invest wisely, says Jack Soost of Jack Soost Associates (indoor air purification services), Lancaster. Room air purifiers can help, especially in the bedroom, but consider investing in a whole-house air purifier, and avoid purifiers that create lung-damaging ozone. Soost’s Photox units come with a reassuring two-week free trial. Zellner’s Alen air purifiers at her pet store and home “work like a charm.”
Even when you don’t need heating or cooling, keep air circulating by running the fan 24/7, says Soost. Install air duct filters, and replace them regularly according to manufacturer’s instructions. If filters for air ducts and furnaces are MERV-rated instead of HEPA, go for MERV 11 or higher to be sure you’re trapping pet allergens.

There’s nothing like a big front porch. It’s a classic spot that invites friendly neighborhood gatherings and conversations. And at Lebanon County restaurant Porch & Pantry, the neighborhood is one-of-a-kind.
“There aren’t many places like Mount Gretna in the world—this place has so much history, and it’s fun to say it’s where I grew up,” says Forrest Borod, 33, one of Porch & Pantry’s three new co-owners, including his wife Christina, also 33, and chef Guido Michael, 45.
Together, the trio has set out to create a seasonal scratch kitchen serving up some of the most unique breakfast and brunch dishes in the Susquehanna Valley.
Mt. Gretna is a tiny community that’s big on arts, culture, and recreation. Founded in the late 1800s as a Chautauqua community, Mt. Gretna is home to the Gretna Theatre—known as America’s oldest summer theatre, the annual Mt. Gretna Outdoor Art Show— set for August 19-20 this year, as well as a sparkling little lake and beach. The community is nestled in a wooded setting—indeed, tall trees give Porch & Pantry’s visitors a side of nature to accompany their meals.
Meanwhile, local agriculture is the star of nearly every plate.
“I try to source as much local fresh produce as possible,” says Guido. “I walk around local farmers’ markets for inspiration, and I like doing twists on old traditional things.”
Fresh local flavors are incorporated into everything from omelets to quiches. Sandwiches are served on sweet potato buns (such as the pulled pork Sando featuring wasabi slaw), and apple sausage hash features maple bourbon glaze. House granola lends a satisfying crunch to several dishes including the coconut mango parfait. Grain bowls include a roasted squash bowl with maple tahini.
Porch signature Items include biscuits & gravy, fig ‘n pig Benni (eggs Benedict), and grilled sticky—a house-made sticky bun that’s a nod to Porch & Pantry’s birth as a bakery in 1987. Nostalgia, like much of Mt. Gretna, is intertwined with innovative ideas at Porch & Pantry.
“I’m still running into people who say, ‘I knew you when you were five riding around here on your bike,’” says Forrest.
Not only did Forrest grow up in Mt. Gretna, but he also worked at Porch & Pantry (in a previous iteration) when he was fourteen. Today, both he and Christina work in the banking industry—and it was through those channels that the couple learned Porch & Pantry was up for sale back in 2018.
“I always wanted to open up a restaurant,” says Forrest, “so I texted the owner, saying I was interested, but they had just signed the paperwork the day before. Then, last August, I found out it was for sale again, and things worked out perfectly because Guido had just left Mt. Gretna Brewery, and I knew he had an unparalleled work ethic to let his vision unfold here.”
Guido, who grew up in the nearby Palmyra-Hershey area, worked his way up in the restaurant industry since his humble beginnings as a 14-year-old busboy.
His career took him across the country, even to Food Network competitions, and back home again. Christina says he’s “like a brother,” since she’s known him since childhood.
One of the skills Guido picked up was fermenting—and his talents are fully displayed on shelves just inside the front door—the “pantry” of Porch & Pantry. Large glass jars hold fascinating fermenting concoctions—along with labeled bottles of Porch & Pantry Hot Honey and Hank’s Red Hot Sauce.
Wait—who’s Hank?
“Hank is our best customer,” says Christina with a smile. “He lives a couple blocks over, on Mulberry.”
Hank never comes inside—but he loves to hang out on the front porch. That’s because Hank is a tiger-striped tabby cat. And when he visits Porch & Pantry, there are pats and purrs. If you’re not lucky enough to meet Hank (he occasionally has off-days), just look for his framed photo inside.
“He’s kinda become our cool little mascot,” says Guido. Also on the pantry shelves: Lebanon County’s Ancestor Coffee, roasted into a one-of-a-kind breakfast blend, only available at Porch & Pantry.
“Our pancakes are crazy popular,” says Guido, who whips up stacks of blueberry, strawberry, chocolate chip, maple bacon, and cherries jubilee pancakes featuring Hidden Still Bourbon compote. One more option—Cakes for a Cause—is a rotating seasonal flavor benefiting local charities.
Sous chef Jason Greathouse, inspired by summer campfires, created the current flavor, s’mores pancakes—which benefit Cocoa Packs, providing food-filled backpacks to children in need.
“I spent the first 22 years of my life living here, and one of my fondest memories is making pancakes every weekend with my dad,” says Forrest. “The Mt. Gretna community is so unique, so tight-knit—it’s a great group of people. As a business owner, I think it’s our responsibility to give back to our community where we can.”

Tips
• You can also cut a checkered pattern in the rind and leave the top on! The edges will curl up while it cooks and leave great pockets to absorb all that honey chorizo goodness!
• This makes a great charcuterie board centerpiece. Try surrounding it with sliced apples, baguette, grapes, fresh herbs, cured meats, and crackers!
Enjoy these healthy and delicious dip recipes to share at any picnic or dinner party.
RECIPES AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY A-YO KITCHENThis is a perfect appetizer for any party or dinner. It brings a little heat, a little sweetness, and a whole lot of flavor as your starter!
1 large wheel (they vary from 15-19.6 oz) or two smaller wheels of Brie
1 lb chorizo
1/2 a Vidalia or sweet onion, finely chopped
4 cloves of garlic, minced or pressed
1/4 cup honey for baking and drizzle
1 Tbsp olive oil
Salt to taste
1. Preheat the oven to 350°.
2. Cut a circle around the top of the wheel of brie. You can peel off the top uncooked, which is a little harder, or cook it and pull it off when the cheese is melted. Either way works.
3. Drizzle with about 2 tablespoons of honey. Place in the oven for 15-20 minutes or until the cheese is melted.
4. While cheese is cooking, chop onion and garlic. Heat pan to medium-high heat, add olive oil, and sauté onions and garlic until translucent.
5. Add chorizo, broken into smaller pieces, and cook thoroughly. Salt to taste. Turn off heat.
6. Remove Brie from the oven, and with the rind peeled off, top with chorizo mixture. Drizzle with honey. Serve with preferred crackers, baguette slices, potatoes, and/or apples. Enjoy all that cheese goodness immediately!

3. Evenly sprinkle with all your toppings.
4. Garnish with fresh dill, fresh cracked pepper, or drizzle with olive oil.

Make this appetizer ahead of time, and have no prep the day of. This unique twist on a traditional hummus will have your guests coming back for seconds!
For the Beans
1lb bag of dried chickpeas
2 Tbsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
6 cloves of garlic
2 bay leaves
Enough water to cover with an inch of headspace
For the Hummus
Juice of 2 lemons
3-5 garlic cloves, depending on taste
½ cup tahini
1 jar sundried tomatoes in oil (reserve some oil and two tomatoes for topping)
1 cup hot water (more or less depending on thickness preference)
¼ cup fresh basil (can use 2 Tbsp of dried)
½ tsp cumin
½-1 tsp ground sumac (optional)
Salt to taste
Optional Garnishes: Fresh basil, chopped sundried tomato, sundried tomato oil or olive oil, ground sumac
Instructions
1. Wash your beans. Remove any stones or dirt. In a pressure cooker, combine all the bean ingredients. Cook on high pressure for 55 minutes. Release pressure, and remove bay leaves. Strain and wash beans.
2. While still warm, combine beans with all the hummus ingredients. Remember to dump in the whole jar of sundried tomatoes, but save a little of its oil to top your hummus.
3. Blend everything until smooth. By doing this while still warm, it makes it extra creamy. Note: it will thicken up as it cools. Salt to taste preference.
4. Eat immediately, or set in the fridge to develop flavors and thicken.
5. Serve with pita, veggies, or use as a sandwich spread. Top with your saved tomatoes, chopped, and drizzle with oil.
Tip
• Hummus is better with fresh chickpeas instead of canned. If you want to soak your beans overnight and cook on the stovetop until they’re soft, that works too!

The highlights of my day include accompanying mom to work, frolicking at the dog park, and nestling myself in cozy blankets. When it comes to treats, I’m not too picky—I love everything! Particularly those irresistible morsels with cheese or bacon. Life is pawsitively delicious!

Hi there! My name is Pippa. I’m so lucky to have the best dad ever! I’m always by his side, and I enjoy snoozing on him a lot. His love for me is truly special. My mom showers me with endless hugs and kisses, and whenever I ask, she spoils me with tasty treats. My big sister is loads of fun. Her room is my favorite hangout spot, filled with exciting things. I even let her style my hair, so I always look pretty! I adore my family, and I know they adore me too. You’ll often find me lounging in windowsills, playfully chasing birds from window to window, munching on my favorite Chicken Littles freeze-dried chicken treats, and having a blast with hair ties.
Hello My name is Shimmer. I’m a vivacious 5-yearold Standard Poodle with an adventurous spirit. Originally hailing from Spring Hope, North Carolina, I now proudly call Pennsylvania my home. I’m showered with boundless love from my doting dad, aunt, cousins, neighbors, and a host of friends I encounter during my walks. Walking, running, jumping, and exploring are my passions, as my dad and I embark on exciting trails, where I like to follow captivating scents along the way. But don’t let my active nature fool you—I can be quite the diva too. Balancing my ruff and tumble side, I enjoy walks, cuddles, snoozing, and indulging my inner hunter by chasing varmints. As for treats, raw bones, yogurt, and whipped cream rank as my absolute favorites. Life is an adventure, and I’m here to embrace it in all its furry glory! Pippa

Nine years ago, a group of Homeland staff and board members set out to create a signature event to shine a light on hospice care and bring the community together to honor and remember loved ones.
Homeland’s annual 5K and Memory Walk has become a meaningful Homeland tradition. It is a day dedicated for families to remember their loved ones and, for us, a day to honor the community and individuals we are blessed to care for. Funds raised support Homeland Hospice supportive services like massage, music therapy, and additional in-home relief hours as well as residents of Homeland Center whose financial resources have been exhausted.
Whether you are a serious runner, a casual walker, or want to commemorate the memory of a loved one, ALL are welcome! Join us individually or as a team on SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, at the Rossmoyne Business Center.
As a resident of Wynfield at Millersville you will have access to the Affiliate Resident of Millersville University Program. This status will grant you many of the same services available to the students of Millersville, including the fitness center, indoor walking track, pool, and dining halls.
You will also have access to libraries and education areas, as well as discounted and free admission to many of the cultural, entertainment, and athletic events held on campus. Located just a few minutes’ walk off campus, this neighborhood has all the amenities you could want at your fingertips. Experience 55+ Living Re-Imagined with this one-of-a-kind community!
