Harrisburg Beach Club: An Oasis on City Island Harrisburg’s City Island is experiencing a revival, and Harrisburg Beach Club is at the forefront. BY RACHEL CURRY PHOTOGRAPHY BY KARLO GESNER
14 SUSQUEHANNASTYLE STYLE| |JUNE JUNE2022 2022 14 SUSQUEHANNA
Harrisburg’s City Island is more than a park. It’s a spectacle, teeming with history and providing the city’s most panoramic views. Now, during Harrisburg Beach Club’s first summer, the island is an iconic summertime refuge once again. Owners Bryan Donovan and Adam Maust opened Harrisburg Beach Club in November after restoring the 101-year-old bathhouse. “It gives it that nostalgia feeling,” Maust says. A heated tent and igloos keep customers warm in the winter, and a long line of umbrellas keep them shaded in the summer heat. The beach club is free to enter and features a food truck and bar. It’s a satellite location for Hidden Still Spirits, whose partnership with Harrisburg Beach Club has helped them “be successful here at the beach club and offer a wide variety of beer, wine, and spirits,” Donovan says. Maust adds, “People can come with their own blankets, they can bring their own food, even, and really sit back and enjoy the space. It’s never to deter that, this is just to supplement your time here.” The sandboxes by the river are perfect for kids to play in, with the adults close by enjoying a burger or brew. Over at the bar, the bathhouse’s old concession stand has been transformed into a custom woodworked home for local beer and cider on tap. There’s plenty of space for events, which often means private gatherings or business functions in and out of the bathhouse. However, it also means public events like races with the beach club as the start and finish line for runners. Open daily, the beach club features live music all through the weekends for anyone to enjoy (including adults and accompanied under-21s). In short, there’s no shortage of activity going on. City Island already offers a lot—a baseball field, mini golf, river boat tours, carriage rides, a cafe, green space, and more, all in just 63 acres. Even so, the addition of the Harrisburg Beach Club is propelling the island’s popularity once again. Maust says, “We think it’s a nice complement to some of the other businesses on the island.” Donovan and Maust first met through the Harrisburg Young Professionals Kickball League. “We kind of indirectly picked each others’ brains, talked about things we were working on, but never actually connected on a project,” Donovan says—until they decided to launch the beach club as a joint passion project. The two are serial entrepreneurs in their own right, but reviving the region through various community-minded projects has become a priority for them both. With their beach club smack dab in the middle of the Susquehanna, Maust and Donovan carry a responsibility to the Susquehanna River and the surrounding environment. That’s why they plan to test the water and share the results right on JUNE 2022 | SUSQUEHANNA STYLE

their website, so people can see its health. “Just that awareness in itself will really help people appreciate the river a little bit more, just by spending a little bit more time around it,” says Maust. Looking back at old photographs, you can see thousands of people on City Island cooling off in the river. From the Dauphin County Historical Society, a 1930’s black-and-white photo shows a manned lifeguard stand on a barge with swimmers in every direction. The now-revived bathhouse is emblematic of its original condition, with even nicer design and accoutrements. After sitting abandoned for 30 years, the building’s restoration is truly a historic accomplishment. Maust and Donovan are not ignorant of the island’s vulnerability to flooding. Once known as Island Park, the Harrisburg Senators baseball team lost their island-based home field to flooding in 1936 and didn’t get it back until 51 years later in 1987. Maust says, “Flooding’s not an if. It’s a when,” which is why the Harrisburg Beach Club made sure they are able to take down everything and store it on higher ground within as little as three hours. This emergency plan makes sure the beach club can continue to serve locals and visitors alike, regardless of what goes down with the weather.
Get this Growth Story! - ROI 14X in 18 Months!
That’s just another quirk of City Island, a place unlike any other. Ultimately, Maust and Donovan don’t want it to be a hidden gem, but a gem right out in the open. With the Harrisburg Beach Club, that wish is now a reality. Maust gleams when he says, “You just feel like you’re in your own little oasis.”

A Guide To Men’s Health At Every Age & Stage A holistic guide to men’s preventative health from BY SALLY RICKER
expert, Jeremiah Williams, owner of Opex Lancaster. At what age should men start considering their overall health and wellness?
What are common ailments and health concerns you see men face?
Health and wellness are lifelong journeys, and each phase of a man’s life should be optimized for self-care. Men are never too young or old to care for themselves appropriately, which doesn’t always mean lifting weights or sticking to a diet.
As a coach, men often come to me seeking help with one specific area of their fitness. Through training, trust, and focus, we usually address three main areas of their health: overall lifestyle, nutrition, and movement.
A lot of our health can be intuitive if we really take the time to listen to what our bodies are telling us—good, bad, and ugly.
How can men prioritize their health during those different stages of life? Health needs to be prioritized, and for men especially, health needs as much effort and attention as we give to our careers and work. It can be common for men to get caught up in the stress and pressure of providing for their families, but simple prioritization of health leads to massive benefits.
Men commonly face fatigue, physical or mental exhaustion, stiffness, high blood pressure, out-of-balance bodies, and other physical limitations. Many of these can be directly correlated with stress, poor nutrition, lack of sleep, emotional unavailability, and lack of meaningful movement.
What is one thing all men should start doing today? I encourage men (and anyone reading this) to embrace their humanity. Recognize what you’re capable of and where your vulnerabilities lie to find that balanced, rhythmic approach to health and life. My goal is to help others learn to live their lives to the fullest and lean into what they recognize as supporting that feeling.
A theoretical framework that requires lifelong learning of how to care for oneself could be categorized as such: The Novice: You’re just getting to know the basics of providing for your physiological needs, from what kinds of foods are best to why rhythms of work and rest are essential to establish. Lots of variety in movement and consistent, small doses of challenge generally characterize your exercise experiences. Recognizing the value of adequate sleep in this phase will accelerate the adaptation process and increase general health.
LIVE WELL
LIFESTYLE
20s, The Apprentice: At this point in your prioritized self-care, your 20s are for reaching your physical potential and finding a rhythm or balance to the movement you do. Experiment with recovery, try a diverse mix of movements, and maximize your potential by building muscle and dialing in your nutrition. 30s, Time to Adjourn: This time is to learn what works and what doesn’t work for you. By your 30s, you should know what movements you like, what doesn’t work for you, and start to look ahead as your metabolism and fitness levels begin to slow down. 40s, The Master of Self Care: Your 40s are the time to be adaptive, resilient, and less afraid to pick up new skills. By this point, resilience and trial of different kinds of movement allow you the freedom to enjoy your body. 50s & 60s, Grand Mastery: At this level, you can use artistic expression of choice and the time you’ve invested in your past experiences to teach others how to embrace their humanity and explore health and wellness.

What It Means to Be a Good Brotha
Black-owned Good Brotha’s Book Café blends coffee with culture and uplifts the community. BY KAREN HENDRICKS PHOTOGRAPHY BY KARLO GESNER
The coffee business is a grind. But it’s also been sweet success for Stefan Hawkins’ Harrisburg business, Good Brotha’s Book Café, ever since he opened Harrisburg’s first Black-owned coffeeshop and bookstore on MLK Day, January 18, 2021. “There’s still a newness to it—I mean, I was working as a truck driver [delivering Pepsi] two years ago. So it feels great, but at the same time, I’m trying to stay humble. There have been a lot of ups and downs, and hard days—people don’t see the grind,” says Hawkins, 32, a Harrisburg native. He’s been in the news—a lot. Good Brotha’s has been embraced as a Black-owned business, and the shop’s Fifth Acres Coffee is available at select GIANT and Karns grocery stores. “To become a media darling overnight, the go-to story for up-and-coming entrepreneurs— it’s a surreal feeling,” Hawkins says. “A lot of businesses are also doing a lot of good in the community, but coming off George Floyd, Black Lives Matter, and uplifting Black businesses, I just happened to be an up-and-coming Black entrepreneur.” Despite the flurry of media coverage over the past 18 months, it turns out there’s still a lot that the average Joe doesn’t know about Hawkins and his cups of Joe. For one thing, he credits the popularity of Good Brotha’s cold brew to their unique process. Most people don’t know it starts with an Ethiopian blend that steeps for 48 hours, compared to the 24-hour process at most coffee shops. The end result is a “rich, dark” cold brew that’s “one of the best in the area,” Hawkins says. Good Brotha’s barista Mohammad Bond has been behind the counter since day one. And the relationship between Bond and Hawkins demonstrates the meaning behind the coffeeshop’s name. “Mo is a great kid—he’s only 18, and he’s been with me since he was 16. I love him like he’s my son, like a mentor,” Hawkins says. “I think a lot of younger Black men or boys need a close role model.” We tried Bond’s signature drink, the Big Mo. “It’s a chocolate chip cookie dough frappe with caramel. I’m a big caramel freak, so almost all my drinks have caramel,” Bond explains, adding, “I love my job—I couldn’t ask to be anywhere else.” Brewed coffee and bags of beans, under the shop’s Fifth Acres brand, is crafted in Harrisburg thanks to a silent roasting partner. Brotha’s Blend features notes of chocolate, caramel, and toasted nuts.

Good Brotha’s Book Café 1419 N 3rd St, Harrisburg goodbrothascafe.com
“I’m not trying to compete with Starbuck’s, Dunkin’ or even local coffee shops,” Hawkins says. “I’m friends with Elementary Coffee and Little Amps. We’re all in our own lanes trying to build our own brands.” The shop is sandwiched between Harrisburg landmarks the Broad Street Market, Susquehanna Art Museum, and Midtown Cinema, along a Third Street corridor peppered with small businesses, restaurants, and shops. Good Brotha’s offers a small but tasty breakfast menu featuring sandwiches and waffles. Along the left-hand side of the shop, there’s plenty of food for thought—bookshelves highlighting African American literature. “The books bring the understanding that there’s more to the African American community than what you may perceive. They’re facets of our culture, and I’m trying to bring them to the forefront,” says Hawkins, who was inspired to open the shop after founding a book club for area friends, Black men known as the Good Brotha’s Book Club. Classic and contemporary titles mingle on the shelves, from Barack and Michelle Obama’s books, to Kamala Harris’ “The Truths We Hold,” plus local Black authors’ works such as Kevin Maxson’s “A Poet’s Cry.” Children’s books include inspirational titles like “Hidden Figures: The True Story of Four Black Women and the Space Race.” Speaking of kids, here’s another side of Hawkins that people might not realize: He draws upon his high school wrestling experience to give back as the Harrisburg Junior High wrestling coach. And he has plenty of first-hand experience with young boys, as the father of five sons. You might call them his very own “good brotha’s.” “The name Good Brotha’s is now synonymous with a Black man trying to uplift his community and be an upstanding citizen, combating false narratives, and showing that there are good men coming from Black communities and cities,” says Hawkins, who enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve straight out of high school—another fact many people might not know. It seems like many people relate to Hawkins’ personal story. “I barely graduated high school—and I graduated with two kids. I have no formal background in business, so some people might recognize the underdog journey in me,” says Hawkins. “Because this business is me, trying. If you really put in the work, you can fully accomplish what you set out to do.” JUNE 2022 | SUSQUEHANNA STYLE

It’s time to put a new twist on some of your favorites
Maple Bacon Chipotle Burgers Makes 4 burgers These unique burgers are well worth all the work! They combine a little spice, a little sweet, and a little salty giving you a flavor packed burger! These are perfect for all your burger lovers out there who are looking for something a little different. 1 lb thick cut bacon ¼ cup 100% pure maple syrup 1 lb ground beef (make sure it has fat in it to ensure juiciness so 80/20 or 85/15 work best!) ½ cup creamy peanut butter 1 tsp chipotle powder 4 slices sharp cheddar cheese 4 hamburger rolls (would recommend brioche buns) Salt, pepper, and garlic powder to taste Optional Toppings: lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles 1. Preheat oven to 375°. 2. Place bacon strips evenly on baking sheet, drizzle with 1/4 cup of maple syrup, and place in oven. Cook until golden brown and crispy (about 30-40 minutes). 3. As soon as you take the bacon out of the oven, place cooked strops on a plate so most of the fat stays on the baking sheet. (Note, don’t drain the fat on paper towels with this bacon like most. Because of the sugar in the maple syrup, it will cause them to stick to the paper towels and make a mess.) 4. In a bowl, combine peanut butter and chipotle powder (if you want the peanut butter ‘liquidy’ put in the microwave for 30 seconds). Set aside. 5. Heat up the grill. 6. For burgers, divide meat into four patties (place a divot in the center to ensure juiciness). Salt, pepper, and garlic powder each side to taste. 7. Grill until cooked to preferred doneness. 8. Toast buns. 9. Top each burger with cheddar cheese. 10. Remove from grill.

11. Top each burger with cooked maple bacon pieces, peanut butter, and preferred additional toppings. Tip: If you want to be a little ‘extra,’ instead of toasting buns on the grill, you can brush maple syrup on top of your hamburger, sprinkle with sesame seeds and chipotle powder, and bake for 5 minutes, or until sesame seeds are toasty.
Healthier Buffalo Chicken Dip An easy and healthier alternative to your fat loaded cream cheese based buffalo chicken dip. This takes less than 30 minutes to make and is a tailgating appetizer that is sure to be a crowd pleaser! Greek Yogurt Ranch 2 cups nonfat Greek yogurt 2 Tbsp ranch powder 1 Tbsp onion powder 1 Tbsp garlic powder 1 Tbsp dried dill 1 Tbsp dried chives 1 tsp garlic salt 1 Tbsp lemon juice Buffalo Chicken 1 tsp butter 1 whole sweet onion, finely chopped 1 lb ground chicken 10-15 whole cloves garlic, minced *you measure this with your heart ¼ cup buffalo sauce 1 tsp ground black pepper or to taste Optional Garnishes: buffalo sauce to taste, thinly sliced scallions or chives, and crumbled blue cheese or feta 1. In a bowl, combine all the above Greek yogurt ranch ingredients. Mix everything until well combined. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use. 2. In a pan on medium heat, add in butter and finely chopped onions. Saute until onions become golden brown. 3. Add your ground chicken. Cook until lightly browned. 4. Then add in your minced garlic and hot sauce. Stir until combined and let simmer for 5 minutes. 5. To serve, take a big scoop of Greek yogurt ranch and make a divot in the center where the meat will be. 6. Spoon buffalo chicken mixture into yogurt divot. 7. Top with whatever garnishes you’d like, drizzle with hot sauce, and serve with your veggies and pita chips. Enjoy! Tip: Try air frying pita chips for a healthier option! It’s great to use herbs from summer herb gardens instead of dried.

Spicy Pork Ramen Bowls Makes 4 bowls This dish always has me reminiscing about my time in Japan, and in the States, I’m always on the hunt for great tan tan ramen (a type of spicy ground pork ramen). This is my adaptation from the many versions I had all over Japan and brings me back to slurping a bowl of it down in many ramen shops. Unlike most ramen, this uses sesame paste to give the broth its creamy texture. The caramelized pork pairs so well with the spicy broth, leafy greens, and the delicate noodles! For the pork 1 lb ground pork 2 Tbsp mirin 1 heaping Tbsp spicy bean paste (la doubanjiang) ½ Tbsp fermented hot chili paste (gochujang) 1 heaping tbsp fresh grated ginger 10 cloves crushed garlic
F
For the broth 1 Tbsp white sugar 2 Tbsp soy sauce 1 Tbsp rice vinegar 2 Tbsp chili crunch 3 Tbsp sesame paste, tahini (can sub w/ peanut butter) 6 cups chicken broth 1 12-oz can of evaporated milk

5. In a saucepan, simmer the chicken stock on the stove. Once simmering, turn off from heat and stir in your evaporated milk. 6. Cook your noodles according to your package instructions. 7. To assemble, place two tablespoons of the broth base at the bottom of a wide bowl, add two cups of your broth, and mix until smooth. 8. Place a forth of your cooked noodles in your broth, and top with a forth of the caramelized pork. 9. Top with your garnishes (we used scallions, bok choy, and chili crunch).
