From The Editor’s Desk. Sports fandom is a strange thing. Politics, religion and professional sports are all topics of discussion that can turn otherwise rational, reasonable people into raving lunatics. Now, that’s not to say I don’t like sports, or sports fans – but I’ve seen grown men nearly come to blows over the sensitive issue of New York versus Boston sport’s teams. People take their sports seriously, especially Pennsylvanians in my experience. Everyone has heard about the infamous incident at a Philly football game when fans booed and heckled Santa Claus while bombarding the poor guy with snowballs and other detritus. I have friends who travel many miles to training camps in the summer to watch and meet athletes who may not even make the team workout and run drills. Some of them do it under the guise of being sports bloggers, but I suspect they’d be sitting out in the hot sun for hours at a time watching the players they’re fanatical about doing suicide sprints regardless. It’s safe to say we’re passionate about

Joe Korba

sports in this country, perhaps, a bit too passionate sometimes. The biggest sporting event of the year is coming up next month. The professional football championship (we can’t use that “super” word according to the NFL’s lawyers – something about copyright infringement) is a great time to get together with friends or family, eat some delicious junk food – wings are my personal favorite game day snack – and have a great time whether you enjoy football or not. If you don’t care about the game you can always check out the commercials or the, usually lackluster in my opinion, halftime show. Although, The Who were pretty awesome when they played a few years back. I hope all of you football fans enjoy the game and all the non-fans enjoy the camaraderie that the big game brings about, even if you’re just there for the taco dip. Also, if you dig sports as much as we do at the Gazette, make sure to check out our sportswriter’s column in every issue. Tyler knows his stuff and will keep you up to date on local sports happenings.

Zinc Production Lecture A history of zinc production in Eastern Pennsylvania and how the region was once among the largest producers of zinc in the world is the subject of a lecture on Saturday January 21st at 1:00 pm at the Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum in Allentown announce Joseph Garrera, Executive Director of the Museum. "Zinc production was crucial to America's victory in the Second World War. Much of that production came from Eastern Pennsylvania in the New Jersey Zinc Company town of Palmerton, Pennsylvania," said Garrera. During WWII, zinc mines and smelters operated at peak capacity. The military need for zinc was enormous. Zinc was used in brass shell cases, in galvanizing zinc formulas to inhibit the rusting of metal, and in sheet metal for constructing fighter planes and bombers. These uses represent only a fraction of the significant widespread military applications of zinc that were vital to winning the war. The program, titled "From Mine to Metal: A History of Zinc in Eastern Pennsylvania," will be presented by Peter L. Kern. Participants will have the opportunity to see fluorescent minerals close up and discover how to recognize and collect them. In the late 1890s, zinc-producing operations were located throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania. In an effort to increase efficiency and maximize production, the New Jersey Zinc Company consolidated its smelting operations at a site along the Lehigh River just north of the Lehigh Gap in Palmerton, Pennsylvania. This region of Pennsylvania possessed large fields of anthracite coal nearby that would be necessary for the manufacturing process. Large supplies of fresh water were also abundant in ample quantities from the Lehigh River. The best zinc ore may have been mined in and around Franklin, New Jersey, but it was shipped by rail to Palmerton, Pennsylvania for efficient processing on a worldclass scale. By 1917, New Jersey Zinc's research and technology out-paced its competitors. When the Continued on Page 10

Joke Corner Worry job A young accountant, straight out of uni, applies for a job advertised in the Sydney Morning Herald. He is interviewed by the owner of a small business who has built it up from scratch. "I need someone with an accounting degree," says the man, "but mainly I'm looking for someone to do my worrying for me." "How do you mean?" says the accountant. "I have lots of things to worry about, but I want someone else to worry about money matters." "OK," says the accountant. "How much are you offering?" "You can start on seventy-five thousand," says the owner. "Seventy-five thousand dollars. How can a business like this afford to pay so much?" "That," says the man, "is your first worry."

Alaska has a lot of wildlife. The world’s largest bears, the Polar bears and the Kodiak bears, make their home in Alaska. More bald eagles gather here than anywhere in the world. They like to dine on the large amounts of salmon swimming by! Mountain goats, sheep, ducks, geese, beavers, porcupines, elk, deer, and squirrels are also found in Alaska. Can you find and circle the amazing Alaskan dwellers in my list?

This animal lives in shallow waters. At one time its family was almost wiped out because people wanted their thick, rich fur. It is what keeps him warm and alive in the icy sea waters. He may weigh 70 to 90 pounds and grow up to 4 and a half feet long. He is part of the weasel family. He likes to eat clams and fish. He rests floating on his back. Do the dot-to-dot to see him:

Alaska is the northernmost state of the United States. People who like to spend time in nature enjoy Alaska! It is a land of scenic landscapes and wilderness. People can climb mountains, hike, fish for salmon, kayak or watch the fantastic display of “northern lights” in the sky. Maybe you would like to spend your time panning for gold or watching sled dog races. Planes or ferries can bring you to places that you might not be able to visit without them! If you are lucky enough to go to Alaska, bring warm clothes. It’s a good idea to take a pair of binoculars to watch the wildlife, too.

Sermonette

Connected - Rev. Dave Reiter

Now that the hustle and bustle of the holiday season is over maybe we can slow down and catch our breath. The shopping, baking, and activities of our everyday life seem to take control of our time and it can all be overwhelming. I am sure some of us had trouble keeping up with our conversations with God. I know I found it challenging. In a world that never sleeps and that is filled with endless activity we have to make the choice to prioritize what’s important and honor the giver of life, Jesus Christ. I have heard it said that we are human beings, not human doings. Psalm 46:10 says for us to, “Be still and know that I am God”. It’s difficult to stay connected to God if we are caught up by our own busyness and agendas. We can even spend so much time doing things for God that we fail to cultivate our relationship with Him. At times it is not doing everything we can; it is doing everything God wants us to do. How can we pour ourselves out to others if we don’t take the time to feed ourselves and fill up with God’s word and stay connected by engaging in conversation with Him every day? I pray that we can all slow down and hear His voice.

Extra Point by Tyler Trumbauer

Northwestern Climbs Back to Prominence

The classic saying in sports is, “Offense wins games, but defense wins championships,” and although some professional football teams are trying to prove that statement inaccurate this season, the Northwestern girls basketball team is still practicing it. The lady tigers are back in the league playoff picture this winter after having four mediocre seasons. This team has a 10-2 overall record and a 6-2 record in the Colonial League. Their league record puts them second in the Colonial League’s North Division behind Bangor. Being in the upper echelon of the girls basketball world is not uncharted territory for head coach Chris Deutsch and his girls. Deutsch’s teams have qualified for the Colonial League girl’s basketball postseason in each of his first four seasons with the Tigers, making three straight league championship games and winning the title in the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons. After those title runs, four roller coaster seasons ensued.

Accepting New Customers

Although the lady tigers fell into a slump during the latter part of the 2000’s, they are climbing their way back to the top. The path back to relevancy was started by an opening win over Stroudsburg to kick off the 2011-12 campaign for Northwestern. They continued their winning ways until a match-up against Colonial league foe, Bangor, on December 23rd. After putting up a battle to the slaters in a low scoring contest, the tigers were handed their first loss of the season. The lady Tigers didn’t dwell on that defeat and got right back to their winning ways led by the team’s leading scorer, junior Sara Jones who is also one of the squad’s two captains. Sara Jones has been producing very well every game so far this season. She has started for Northwestern since her freshman year, when the team went 3-19. Jones is a great player and Deutsch told me, in a phone interview, why he thinks she is really having a standout season; “Sara is a good player. She finally has girls around her this year that can score and help her out. Before this season she had to do most of the work.” The lady Tigers’ defense is phenomenal as they have only let one opponent score more than 40 points against them. Deutsch believes this is his team’s biggest strength, “Our defense has kept us in a lot of games and have allowed us to win a lot of [them]. This is easily our biggest strength.” The reason this team is a great defensive unit could be the product of unity. This squad is a very closely knit group of girls. This solidarity and camaraderie could be the explanation for the fantastic showing of defense these girls put out every game. This lady Tigers team looks to be one of the best ones that Chris Deutsch has had in a while. They are very competitive and have a good mix of talent on offense and defense and Deutsch has confidence in them, “We can beat anyone in the Colonial League on any given night and we can also lose on any given night. We have the skill set Continued on Page 31

Extra Point Continued from Page 30 to be right up with the best of them.” These girls are tremendously talented and I expect them to do damage in the league and district playoffs this year. Before we worry about the postseason though, there are some exciting games that these Tigers have yet to play. They take on Notre Dame G.P. on January 24th, Northern Lehigh on January 31st and Bangor on February 7th. These aforementioned contests could really reshape their season.

A Touch of Dutch 23 Yenner, 1958 Well, mir hen uns do iwwernemme losse mit me Watt as mir selvert shier net glaawe ken. Des Watt iss Gold. Mir hen do gsehne uff em Kalenner as uff Mariye, der 24 Yenner in 1848, ( sell iss schunt eehunnertunzehe Yaahr) Gold gfunne iss warre in California. Waare so Goldschmidt ariyets do rum Yaahre zerick? Of course, mer lese im Alde Teschdament, wo Gold en Unnergang waar zu der Leit. Sie hen en golde Kalb gemacht un ge-ehrt. Ya well, Gold waar aa schunt viel Unnergang zu Leit in der Yaahre, wo mir bekannt sin. Awwer no hen mer aa en annere Yuus fer es Watt Gold, wann mer schwetze vun der ‚Golden Rule’. Wann mer selli Meening zu Hatz nemme, sin mer allrecht. Der golde Aadler hocht owwich unserm Flag; mer hen en Blumm do rum, as mer ‚Goldenrod’ heese; die Weibsleit hen ‚Gold Lace’ uff em Frack; mer wisse en Vogel as mer der ‚Goldfink’ heese. In California iss en groossi Brick as sie die ‚Golden Gate’ heest. Un mer wolle net vergesse as en Zuschloss vun Lewe, ‘the Golden Age’ ghesse watt. -Florence Baver

January 23, 1958 We let ourselves be overtaken here with a word that we ourselves can’t believe. This word is gold. We saw on the calendar that on tomorrow, January 24, in the year 1848, (that is already 110 years ago) gold was discovered in California. If that was not an uproar, when everybody went at it vigorously to find some of that yellow dirt! How many can still remember how you perhaps carried a few gold pieces in your change purse, or perhaps had nicely wrapped them (in something) and stuck them in a dresser drawer upstairs? And some women were so prone to showoff, that they had a hole drilled in a gold coin and hung it on a chain around their necks. Gold was so desirable as the best and was just honored or esteemed in many ways. If a man made his living forging gold, he was called a goldsmith. Were there such goldsmiths anywhere around here years ago? Of course, we read in the Old Testament, where gold was the downfall to the people. They made a golden calf and worshipped it. O well, gold already caused many downfalls to people in the time with which we’re familiar. But we have then another use for the word gold, when we talk about the ‘Golden Rule.’ When we take that meaning to heart, then we are all right. The golden eagle sits over our flag; we have a flower around here that we call the‘goldenrod’; the women have ‘gold lace’ on the dress; and we know of a bird that we call the ‘goldfinch’. And in California, there is a bridge that they call the ‘Golden Gate’. And we don’t want to forget that the last years of life are referred to as the ‘golden age’. The nicest time of life comes to some, where a man and his wife are united in marriage for fifty years, and they celebrate their golden anniversary. It seems to me that it is with gold as with everything else. When one uses it in the right way and takes out the right meaning for it, it is nice.

WANT TO SAVE 20% ON YOUR HEATING BILL? If you have a fireplace in your home, that’s how much heat you can be losing up the flue! Do a simple candle test… light a candle and SLOWLY go around the edge of your fireplace opening – or the edge of the fireplace doors, for those homeowners with doors. See what happens to the flame. From the midpoint and up across the top, the flame will move slightly TOWARD the fireplace. This shows the heat leaving your house. At the bottom of the fireplace, the flame will move towards your room. This is the COLD AIR coming down the backside of the flue and heading straight into your cozy warm home!

This well constructed, superbly eningeered damper eliminates 90% of the winter heat and summer cooling loss that leaks past your current damper. It also eliminates downdrafts and keeps moisture and animals out of your chimney and home. Moisture in your chimney causes unwelcome odors and leads to deterioration of bricks and mortar. The Lyemance Top-Sealing Damper works year round to protect your chimney. That’s why thousands are installed each year.

The Top Sealing Damper was originally invented as a replacement damper for rusted-out heatilator fireplace dampers. We have installed 900+ top-mount dampers, 300 as replacement dampers and 600 on masonry fireplaces. They save energy, reduce cold air drafts, make the room quieter, and make starting a fire easier because of the warm column of air that has replaced the standard cold, wet column of air that is normally in your flue.

Professionals always sell the sturdiest, most durable, and most effective products availOpen the damper or able – the ones you lock it tight with this can’t find in your local handle mounted in stores. Why? They the firebox. stake their reputation on what they sell. Lyemance Dampers are only sold through professionals because it takes a professional to properly size and install a Lyemance Damper. Once installed, it’s easy as pie to use – with a simple tug on the handle, it’s open and with another tug, it’s closed. Why wait? Begin saving energy and increase your comfort now. Don’t waste another dollar in energy loss – begin your long friendship with Lyemance, the leader in top-sealing dampers.
