From The Editor’s Desk. Lately the news is pretty heavy. The earthquake and subsequent nuclear disaster in Japan scream from the headlines and top the nightly news broadcasts. It was over a month ago when a devastating earthquake shook the ground under the island nation sending thirty foot high tsunami waves smashing inland washing away lives and homes. The outcome of nature’s fury is staggering, almost 13,000 dead and over 14,000 still missing. The final toll will surely be much higher. On top of the tremendous destruction the quake brought to their homes the Japanese have to cope with the radiation pouring into the air and water from a damaged nuclear plant. This environmental catastrophe is unprecedented; no one knows the full impact of the leak or how to stop it. The seawater near the plant has over a million times the amount of radiation that occurs naturally and nearby crops are tainted by contamination. The culture has a marked reverence towards the dead and to compound the tragedy the radiation is making recovery operations in some of the afflicted areas near impossible.

In the wake of all this incomprehensible tragedy the Japanese people have risen to the occasion with strength, courage and selflessness. Even with constant media coverage you rarely hear of looting, price gouging or other post-disaster human indecency. They are showing grace in spite of the ongoing uncertainty and death all around them. Businesses that were destroyed are getting financial and material help from their competitors, vending companies are opening their machines so survivors can get free drinks and food and supermarkets cut their prices in half. We can all learn from Japan’s solidarity, their love for each other not blinded by greed. This time of year communities often come together to remember Jesus’ sacrifice. He gave everything so that we may have salvation and taught unconditional love. No matter what your religious views or affiliation being kind to one another is universal. The Japanese example of unselfish love for their fellow man is something we should all try to emulate this Easter season. Springtime Safety Tips for Dogs Unless you live in a very mild or tropical zone, making the transition from spring to summer requires some adjustments for dogs and owners alike. Just as winter ice doesn't become summer grass overnight, changeable conditions require flexibility. Here are some things to take into consideration now that spring has sprung: Spring Outer Wear: If your dog wears a coat in winter, unless the heat transition is very dramatic, you may want him to wear a lighter sweater or doggy tee walking in the chilly sun. Coat-donning dogs are accustomed to having their body temperatures managed, and they get chilly easily. Paw Care: Conscious spring paw care is essential. Roadside banks of icy snow have been repeatedly inundated with salt and other snow melting chemicals. The puddles from these glaciers are toxic and harsh for the pads. Remember to wash your dog's feet with soap after every walk and beware of thirsty dogs who

want to lap up snow melt water. As the sun warms the roads, dogs will again get thirsty on walks, so carry a water bottle and travel bowl to prevent sipping roadside sludge. Shedding: Many dogs shed in spring. Shedding is a natural transition, but the dry, winter coat can Continued on Page 22

INCOME TAX ALERT

Normally when most individuals sell their personal residence, such individuals are benefited by a provision in the income tax law which exempts up to $250,000 of gain from income taxes arising on the sale of a personal residence for single persons and $500,000 for married persons. A recent decision determined that if two non-married individuals each owned a half interest in the house, each of them is eligible to claim the $250,000.00 exemption against income tax gain. Congress made a change in December of 2010 which can, in certain circumstances, cause a certain tax called “Medicare surtax” on a portion of the gain when one sells one’s personal residence. Essentially, if a personal residence is sold after 2012 a 3.8% Medicare surtax applies. The surtax is designed to apply on “investment income” namely on the smaller of “net investment income” or the “excess of adjusted gross income” over a $200,000 threshold for an individual and $250,000 threshold for married individuals. The trick is though that capital gains are treated as “investment income”. Thus, if a personal residence is sold for a substantial gain after 2012, the sale may subject the homeowner to the 3.8% Medicare surtax. The surtax will even be applied in a harsher circumstance on the sale of second homes after 2012. The Home Sale Exclusion does not apply to second homes so the surtax gain will apply to the entire gain. Some individuals who are considering selling their house at a substantial gain either the primary residence or a second residence might want to consider consummating the sale before the end of 2012. The Medicare surtax is part of the “Obama Healthcare Plan” and is designed to raise money to provide healthcare benefits to others in need of healthcare who do not have the resources or insurance to cover needed healthcare. Commentators have referred to a tax such as this as part of the Obama “spreading the wealth” or, “wealth redistribution”. In any event being aware of the Medicare surtax may help certain individuals in planning to avoid or minimize the Medicare surtax.

Springtime Safety Tips for Dogs Continued from Page 17 cause mats and tangles as it falls out, especially if your dog wears a coat or a sweater outside. Always remember to take your dog's warm clothes off inside after every walk. Gentle, regular brushing in spring helps restore oils to the new coat, stimulates the skin and prevents the dreaded dreads of an unkempt coat. Your vet may approve canine Omega 3 oil capsules to assist this transitional period for the coat. Exercise: Warmer weather means we all feel friskier. It is normal for dogs to store fat in winter, but a heavier dog needs to begin spring exercise gently. Just as you may want to ease back into an outdoor exercise routine, your companion dog also needs to take it slowly at first. Increase walks and runs in the park steadily, but gradually. Allergies: Dogs get springtime allergies too. As is the case for humans, dogs can become allergic over time, so do not be surprised if your dog's reactions to springtime allergens change from puppy to adult. Pollen from the first flowering trees, dandelions and tulips, dust, mold and even insects can cause allergic reactions. Symptoms include itching, coughing, sneezing, flaky skin or an oily-feeling coat. Never use human allergy medicines for dogs on your own initiative. Canine allergy medicines are effective; your vet can prescribe the safest dose. Toxic Plants and Mulch: Spring bulb plants pushing out of the ground often attract dogs. It's not that dogs just want to ruin the landscaping. Squirrels and rodents are also attracted to spring bulbs and an inquisitive dog might be hot on the trail. But beware. Many spring bulbs fall into the allium family, and onions (allium) are toxic to dogs. Furthermore, cocoa mulch, often used as bedding mulch for park side flower beds, is very

attractive to, but highly toxic to dogs. Keep your dog out of the flower beds and nobody will get hurt. Lawn Chemicals: In the spring, your dog will be able finally to run on grass, not frozen snow or dead thatch. Please pay attention to where you let your dog run. Spring lawn care often combines herbicide and pesticide treatments to kill insect larva, ticks, fleas, "critters," and seed-sprouting weeds. Nitrogen-based fertilizers, blood meal, milorganite, rose boosters and Japanese beetle inhibitors, grub killers, herbicides, insecticides (especially those with organophosphates), rodenticides, acid fertilizer for holly and azalea and slug and snail baits do not belong on dogs' paws. While these chemical washes might produce a green lawn, they also produce a toxic lawn for dogs. So, walk your dog in the safe scrubby grass in spring and keep an eye out for the "pesticide treated" signs in the formal lawns. Pesticides, herbicides and dogs don't go together. By thinking ahead, dog owners can head off problems and help their dogs get the most out of getting out and about in spring.

“For the Love of Trees” A Reflection for Arbor Day

By Juanita Carra-Budzek Arbor Day will be celebrated on April 29 in our area. The first Arbor Day took place in Nebraska on April 10, 1872. According to accounts, more than one million trees were planted in Nebraska by settlers on that first Arbor Day in 1872. In 1885 Nebraska declared Arbor Day a legal holiday. The date was changed to April 22, commencing with students marching in a parade, following their tree planting activities at school. In Pennsylvania, Arbor Day is celebrated on the last Friday in April. In other parts of the country Arbor Day falls on the best day for tree planting. Arbor Day is a celebration with an opportunity to educate students and the general public about trees. Most of us plant trees for their beauty and our pleasure, but trees are so much more. They give us protection from wind and weather. They provide shade and prevent soil erosion. Trees are planted for harvest, to provide the wood that builds our homes, becomes our furniture, the paper we write on, and numerous utilitarian objects we use in our daily lives. Trees also provide, shelter, homes and food for wildlife. In addition to planting trees, it is especially important that we don’t cut them down just because we want a better view. They play a critical role in our health and the health of our environment. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen into our atmosphere. It is estimated that there should be at least 17.5 trees per person in order to make this exchange. This does not include the carbon monoxide from the vehicle you drive, or the oxygen carbon dioxide exchange needed for each animal on the planet. Trees also prevent erosion of river and stream banks, helping to keep

the water clean and flowing slower, so aquatic and plant life can thrive. Some tips for planting: 1. Know how big your tree is going to grow in width and height. 2. Don’t plant too close to your home or electrical wires. Some trees can grow up to 45 ft wide and 75 feet high. 3. Plant native trees. The wildlife will thank you because native trees give them the food they need to live on. 4. Enjoy. Please visit our website for upcoming events www.bhcwa.com Meetings are held at 7:00 PM on the second Monday of each month at the Pennsville Hotel in Lehigh Township.

Busy Easter Bunny I watched him placing Easter eggs amongst the pretty flowers. The ones springtime had brought our way with bright sunshine and showers. Oh, such a busy, happy fellow dashing on his way, was Mr. Rabbit getting ready for our Easter Day. He hummed a joyful bunny tune, hop, hopping here and there. The Easter Bunny Is Pennsylvania Dutch You may not know this, but the Easter Bunny is actually a Pennsylvanian! It seems like Puxatawny Phil might have some competition for most beloved Pennsylvanian little furry animal. The Easter Bunny first emigrated to PA during the 18th century after living in Germany since at least the 17th century when the first records of him existing were recorded in a German publication. Of course when he first came over he went by his Pennsylvania Dutch name, The Osterhare. Back in those days PA Dutch children would

make baskets out of caps and bonnets and hide them in places throughout their house for the Osterhare to find and leave his brightly painted eggs in. As the tradition spread the homemade nests became the Easter baskets that we know today. If you see the Osterhare around this Easter make sure to welcome him home! By Joe Korba

Spread The Good Word - Sermonette Small Moments in Life Offer Lessons By Rev. Debra K Hess We are never too old to learn. Lessons are not always learned from a book in a classroom. They are not always learned from a verse in a Bible. Our name does not have to be Noah or Jonah or Mary or Martha in order to learn a lesson. Most often, they are learned through the unfolding of our daily lives. We learn not at once, but long after the lesson has passed. We learn things in our childhood that may not come to pass until our adult life. Every day there is a new lesson, whether we are aware of it or not. Some examples: Every day I drive by a pasture of cows and sheep, peacefully grazing together. They mingle at a slow pace. They are not divided - with sheep on one side of the pasture and cows on the other. They are simply together. There is a lesson in this co-habitation. The soon-to-be bride is left at the altar waiting for her knight in shining armor. She runs down the aisle, her face stained with tears, her heart shattered in a million pieces because her knight never appears. She learns broken hearts mend in time, but never give up a dream. It was a day in the park when I stumbled upon my own learned lesson. I watched a blonde, curly-headed girl of about three run across the lawn, bend down and pick a fistful of flowers. She ran back to where her mother and brother were sitting, keeping her hands hidden behind her back. Suddenly, she thrust her tiny hands forward,

presenting the drooping flowers to her mother with a big grin on her face. Her mother took the flowers and kissed her on the cheek. I learned that small moments complete the larger portrait of life. Easter is certainly no small moment in the life of a Christian. Jesus died on the cross for you and for me. This sacrificial act is only the beginning of many life lessons to come. May the joy of Easter continue to live in your heart through your journey of life lessons.

Donut Man In Concert at Bowman Park Camp…

Yes, you read correctly, Rob Evans, The Donut Man, will be coming close by to Bowman Park Camp in Bowmanstown, PA on Sunday, August 7th at 7:00pm. A Donut Man concert grabs children right where they are with a wonderful blend of Bible songs, stories and lots of audience participation. Children are brought from out of the audience to help the Donut Man tell his stories and to do the hand motions that go with the songs. Even Duncan the Talking Donut pops out of his bakery box to sing a "whole" song. A Donut Man concert is a great place for young families to sow seeds of Biblical values into their lives. Values that Rob has cultivated with his wife and their six children(and now 7 grandchildren). It works. This is "fun that redeems". See you there! This is a concert you DO NOT want to miss. If you have questions you can email us at bowmanpark@ rcn.com. We look forward to you joining us!!

Local Manager publishes 2nd Book “8 Days On The Delaware River: A Trip To Remember” Pen Argyl resident and Slatington Bowling Center Manager Paul M. Donovan Jr. recently published his second book titled, “8 Days On The Delaware River: A Trip To Remember”. The book is a day by day retelling of a fishing and camping adventure he and fishing buddy Ray Labarre completed in 2006. The trip started in Hancock, NY and was to finish at Kittatinny Beach in the Delaware Water Gap, a total of 120 miles. Ray’s fourteen-foot aluminum boat had taken them on many two and three day trips, but this time they were loaded for a week long adventure in unfamiliar waters better suited for canoes. Donovan said they enjoyed the scenic Delaware River and encountered some very interesting situations. There were shallow waters, some fast and rather scary rapids, an emergency room visit, shopping for a new oar and a truly unexpected ‘boat ride’ that kept them moving along. Naturally, a few fish stories are included. With a few stories about previous trips sprinkled in, and pictures taken during and after the trip, the book provides for an easy to read, day-by-day recap of the adventure. The book is available in paperback, hard cover and e-book editions. 8 Days On The Delaware River: A Trip To Remember is published by AuthorHouse, a nationally known publisher based in Bloomington, Indiana. The book is available through the authors own web site at www. pmdbooks.com or through the publisher’s online bookstore at www.authorhouse.com. Donovan’s first book is titled “Poetry In Motion, My Thoughts & Reflections”. It contains a collection of over 70 poems that were written over the years concerning the seasons, holidays, general stories and just his thoughts about things and life in general. There are a variety of styles and formats that make for easy, enjoyable reading that will keep your interest, but not be overwhelming. Donovan graduated from Bangor High School and has an Associate Degree in Accounting from NCACC and a BA in Business Management

from DeSales University in Center Valley. He had worked in banking for over 32 years and is presently Manager of the Slatington Bowling Center. He is an avid bowler and competes in some of the Regional PBA events. When not working, bowling or fishing, he enjoys an occasional round of golf. He has been involved with the Slate Belt Chamber of Commerce for many years and is currently serving as Chairman of the Board. He and wife Cathy will be celebrating 35 years of marriage in April and they have two daughters, Jennifer in Allentown, PA and Beth in Baltimore, MD. Paul M. Macht’s gut Der Alt Psrofesser Translation RELIEFS ABOUT EASTER Solly Holsbuck wrote at one time: Oh, my heart beats so that it hums When spring weather comes again! And I jump right into the air Like a ram with fleas When it rams someone awfully, When the spring weather comes. Yes, spring was here on the twentieth of March and this year a nice time for the Pennsylvania Dutch comes right after it. The Easter season is here. On Sunday, the thirtieth of March, is Easter. Why on the thirtieth? Because we had a full moon on the 26th of March. And what does that have to do with anything? On the twentieth of March the sun once again came back over the equator. Yes, it certainly is true. First the sun comes back, then comes a full moon, and after that the next Sunday is Easter Sunday. But today, as you dear readers know, is Maundy Thursday (Green Thursday). Did you go out into the field yesterday or this morning to get something green – dandelion, perhaps? If you didn’t, you can eat endive or cabbage – clover, even. You have to do that if you don’t want to become a donkey! And one should cut his grass today, then it will stay nice and green the whole summer. And if one throws a little hay into the barn today, then the cows will eat it and they won’t get fat the whole year. And what is tomorrow? Yes, it will be Good Friday. It will rain tomorrow – maybe only three drops, but it will rain! And you dear women, you should not bake on Good Friday. And you men, you should not dig out in the garden. But on Good Friday you should go out into the barn or into the hen house and gather up the eggs and color them (hopefully you saved your onion skins). But you can also wrap the eggs in calico and then cook them. When they come out of the

hot water, you will certainly like them. And the hard boiled eggs are then good to eat on Easter Sunday. But don’t eat them all. Take two of them and put them into a drawer, then the lightning will not strike the house the whole year. Take care, The Old Professor From a Pennsylvania Dutch Year by Earl C. Haag. Lehigh Township Historical Society - Mural, Mural, On The Wall . . . Newest Display Of All! Please mark your calendar for the opening day of the Lehigh Township Historical Centre on May 15. Members have been busy getting ready for the Open House which will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. The historical centre is located along Route 248 in Pennsville. There is plenty of parking and admission is free. The centre will be open again on Sunday, May 29, and every second and fourth Sunday of each month thereafter up until October 9, from 1 to 4 p.m. Members will be on hand to welcome you and answer any questions you may have. We have added new displays and will have a new self-guided tour booklet for your use as you walk through the memorabilia. Thanks to Malcolm Gieske and his skills, an eye-catching silk mural covering a back wall, from floor to ceiling, is now the background for the machines from the Penn Keystone Knitting Mill which was situated in Walnutport. A flat-bed knitting machine, an industrial sewing machine, and a circular knitting machine were donated to the society after the mill was closed. The enlarged black and white photo of the workers and machines used at the knitting mill was taken in 1951. You will be interested in seeing this and If you know anyone who worked there, there is a picture with names of workers listed adjacent to the mural. This unique display was just finished this spring and is a special feature this season. This is a must see display! Please call 610-767-5989 for any additional information or questions.

Aiding Americans With Autism (NAPSI)-Research shows treatment in the form of early intervention services, such as therapy to help a child with autism communicate, learn and interact with others, can greatly improve the child's development. That's good news considering that a child is diagnosed with autism every 20 minutes. Autism has become the fastestgrowing developmental disability in the world. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates as many as 1 in 110 children in the U.S. has autism-a developmental disability that significantly hinders social interaction, communication and behavior. What To Watch For Autism Spectrum Disorders tend to begin before the age of 3 and last a lifetime. Symptoms vary but can include: • Not responding to their name by 12 months • Not pointing at objects to show interest by 14 months • Not playing "pretend" games by 18 months • Avoiding eye contact and wanting to be alone • Having trouble understanding other people's feelings or talking about their own feelings • Getting upset by minor changes • Having obsessive interests • Having unusual reactions to the way things sound, smell, taste, look or feel All this can cause a high level of stress in a family-the average lifetime cost for caring for a child with autism is $3.5 million-so it's critical to not only help the child but to support the child's

family as well. To that end, Easter Seals has become one of the leading nonprofit service providers for children and adults living with autism and their families. How You Can Help Upload a photo of your child (age 5 or younger) to www.21cen turychild. com along with an inspirational message. Then, post a link to the profile on your social network pages and encourage friends and family to make a donation to Act for Autism in your child's name. With a goal of raising $1 million through this 21st Century Child: Picture the Future campaign, Century 21 Real Estate LLC will donate $1 for each uploaded photo*. The biggest fundraiser wins a $2,100 Apple Gift Card. The next 6 fundraisers will receive an iPad. All the money raised will help Easter Seals' Act for Autism provide families affected by autism with assistance, including emotional support for parents, equal access to treatment, and innovative coping strategies for children. Learn More To see the adorable pictures, get more information about autism or to join the campaign, visit www.21centurychild.com. Helping children with autism blossom may be simpler than some think.

Slices of Life A woman who tells you where to go By: Jill Pertler My husband has a new lady friend. He shares her with our three sons, who are also sweet on the most recent family acquaintance. They are, in a word, enamored. Under normal circumstances, I might feel threatened – what with my four guys throwing their rapt attention toward another woman’s voice – but these aren’t normal circumstances. That’s because the woman in question, we call her “Carmen,” isn’t a female in the true sense of the word. She has no arms or legs. Her body, if you can call it that, appears nondescript and rectangular, anchored by a round, rubber, suction-cupped base. She possesses an admirable brain, and her fullcolor touch screen is a little intimidating. But, Carmen’s main claim to fame is her voice. It is distinctive, feminine and authoritative. Carmen is our new GPS navigation device; in other words, a computerized gizmo that works like on old-fashioned map – only better. Carmen connects with satellites in outer space, downloads information and gets us from Point A to Point B using state-of-the-art voice commands that leave most men wanting just one thing: more. After an unscientific quiz of my friends, I’ve found that the majority of families name their GPS devices. It seems that something with a female voice – even something as small as a 4 by 2 inch touch screen – warrants attention worthy of a name. I’m not sure how we settled on Carmen, but it fits. Carmen can tell us how to get where we are going, how fast we are going and exactly when we will get there. If we have a hankering for a certain type of fast food – say chicken originating from

the state known for horses and derbies – Carmen can tell us the location of the closest restaurant. She would never consider stopping to ask for directions. As I said, my boys are enamored. Why wouldn’t they be? With Carmen, we have a woman (if you can call her that) who meets the definition of directional flexibility. If and when we do make a wrong turn, it thwarts Carmen not. She doesn’t pass blame or judgment. She doesn’t shake her head or roll her eyes. (She wouldn’t, even if she had them.) She just fixes our mess with a distinctive, one-word directive: “Recalculating.” My husband explained his respect for Carmen in this regard. “She’s always calculating,” he said. “I like a calculating woman.” He’s telling the truth. And I think there’s even more to it than that. Despite what they may claim otherwise, my boys like a woman who tells them where to go and what to do. It frees them up to think about more important things, like arriving at their destination. Arriving provides the purpose for Carmen’s existence, and she seems to know this. Upon arrival, Carmen’s vocal charm rises to a new level. Whereas Carmen has, up until this point, been the voice of authority, arriving brings about a rare display of emotion. When you make your final turn and approach your desired site, Carmen announces with an uplifted hilt, “Arriving at your destination.” The arc and tenor in her voice when reciting the word “destination” alludes to a feeling of computerized joy. Even if you were arriving at the Continued on Page 52

Slices of Life Continued from Page 51 dentist for a much-dreaded root canal, Carmen would be delighted to get you there. That means something. Carmen is a woman with a purpose. You’ve got to admire that. After a recent family vacation, my second grader expressed his appreciation of our GPS device. “I love Carmen,” he said. “Not love, love; but love like I’m glad she came with us to Florida and told us how to get there.” He paused and then added, “And, her voice sounds nice.” You’ve got to hand it to Carmen; she is directionally smart and has information coming from very high places. Plus, she’s got my four boys wrapped around her little finger. Well, she would – if she had fingers. Awarding Kids Who Give (NAPSI)—Young people across America are making a positive impact in their communities by volunteering. Fortunately, giving back doesn’t always have to be its own reward. Winners of the annual Kids Who Give contest, sponsored by Farm Rich, will each get a donation of up to $2,500 to their causes, a personal gift card and a prize pack valued at around $300. Grandprize winners, with a parent or guardian, will also get an all-expenses-paid trip to the awards dinner in New York City. The contest is open to U.S. residents ages 7 to 17 and you can enter it at www. kidswhogive.com. The contest was created by Farm Rich, the frozen snacks and appetizers brand, to recognize and celebrate outstanding young people who go above and beyond to volunteer in their communities in an effort to make a difference and to educate other interested kids on how to start giving back. Entries will be accepted March 1 to May 31, 2011. You can join the conversations at www.facebook. com/FarmRichSnacks; follow @kidswhogive on Twitter; and view video entries at www.youtube. com/farmrichkidswhogive.
