Joe From The Editor’s Desk. Korba

There are few things in life better than a great meal with close friends or family. Eating out is a communal experience that can bring families together, be the catalyst for great conversation and is a first-date staple. Restaurants, diners, ice cream stands and driveins are the social epicenters of American culture. In every community, no matter how big or small, the places and ways people eat together are a pretty good measure of an area’s ways and traditions. In Lehigh and Northampton County’s tight knit communities people come together at the diners and drive-ins that have served us delicious food for the better part of a century or longer. We know that we’ll most likely run into our friends or neighbors enjoying a meal and probably count the proprietor of the place as a friend and a neighbor as well. This closeness amongst neighbors is becoming increasingly rare in today’s fast-paced society. Technology has made the world smaller, but it’s also pushed us apart. You can send e-mail to someone thousands of miles away in seconds

but you might be so busy on your laptop that you don’t even know the name of the person sitting next to you at the lunch counter. It’s comforting to walk into a pizza place or diner you’ve been going to for years and have someone greet you with a friendly smile and call you by your name. Always make sure you smile back, because this familiarity isn’t something to take for granted.

Reader’s Poll Favorite Restaurant Slatington Diner People have their favorite diners, restaurants, ‘nooks, ice cream stands and drive-ins throughout Northampton, Carbon and Lehigh counties but it was a local diner that took the top slot in our Town & Country Gazette favorite restaurant readers choice poll. The Slatington Diner took an early lead and maintained its 1st place position as the votes kept coming.

Many of our readers had nothing but praise for the diner. Bill from Slatington said that it’s his favorite place to grab a bite because of the great food, service and friendly people. Lori from Whitehall also praised the fast service and had one word to describe anything on the breakfast menu: “yum.” Harry from Schnecksville said he likes the chicken fingers and fries while Malinda from Slatington can’t choose because everything on the menu is a favorite of hers. Megan from Allentown enjoys the diner’s omelets and appreciates the clean and friendly atmosphere. The Slatington Diner came under new ownership about two years ago with Steve and Robbie, the new owners, making some big changes. A new staff works the dining room including waiters Kyle and Kim. Cooks Steve and Carol man the kitchen in the back. Robbie emphasizes Slatington Diner’s cleanliness and welcoming atmosphere as well as the hands-on management team who are there 7 days a week making sure the food and service are top-notch. “When people come into the diner they are surprised by how nice it is,” says Robbie. “We have families coming from all over to eat here. Some of our regulars are here 7 days a week.” The diner’s affordable breakfast menu is popular with patrons, with eggs and a 10oz. steak

priced at only about ten dollars as well as lots of lower priced options. “People really love our omelets, they’re crazy about them,” says Robbie “Ham and scrapple is another of our signature breakfast dishes.” Along with their breakfast the diner has a lunch menu that includes burgers and fries, fish and chips and the acclaimed salmon burger. The diner also does it’s own baking and makes homemade desserts including pies and cheesecake. According to Robbie it’s the food that keeps everyone coming back. “Everything is fresh and homemade. It might take a little longer but it’s worth it.” By Joe Korba

Favorite Restaurant Top Pick’s Honors Favorite Restaurant ballots came in from all over our area. Readers Chose the Slatington Diner as their overall favorite, with the following four area restaurants receiving Top-Pick honors; Sante Fe Taco, Blue Mountain Drive-In and Family Restaurant, Edgemont Acres and Bowmanstown Diner. Sante Fe Taco Co. is a mother and son owned southwestern/ Mexican restaurant in downtown Northampton offering a delicious variety of tacos, burritos, enchiladas and more. Gail and Michael Tatasciore have owned and operated the restaurant since 2007. Audrey, a Town & Country Gazette reader who responded to our poll says that she enjoys their homemade shells, reasonable prices and the variety of tacos.

Blue Mountain Drive-In and Family Restaurant is in the heart of the Blue Mt. Lisa Csencsits owns the Blue Mt. Drive-In, an old school Drive-In and restaurant with a mini golf course in Danielsville offering traditional diner fare as well as a wide array of desserts and ice cream. With over 100 items on the menu here patrons have a lot of great meals to choose from. Readers Barb and Ron from Lehigh Township call Blue Mountain Drive -In their favorite restaurant because of the homemade soups and home baked pies and cakes.

Edgemont Acres is along busy Rte 946. Richard and Gayle Fritz along with daughter Mellanie Hoats own Edgemont Acres in Walnutport, a Drive-In with a variety of food, weekly specials and recently updated mini golf course. Edgemont is open 7 days a week and has an indoor dining room so people can enjoy Gayle’s famous stuffed French toast year round. Edgemont Acres also features Leiby’s hard & soft ice cream as well as vanilla and chocolate soft serve. Violet, a reader from Danielsville, says the spaghetti with homemade sauce is great!

Bowmanstown Diner is in our Northern region. Richard Wenner and Michael Aniskevich have owned the diner for 20 years. Steeped in nostalgia and familiarity the Bowmanstown Diner, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, has been serving up delicious food for years. With daily specials and favorites like chipped beef and gravy fries the Diner is a local institution. The Ebeley’s from Palmerton say that the price is great, you get a lot of food for your money and that the diner has THE BEST chicken potpie.

Celebrate Conservation on April 22nd! The first Earth Day in 1970 was born from scientists and conservationist’s concern of what industrial pollution was doing to the environment. Cultural milestones like Rachael Carson’s exposé of DDT pesticide Silent Spring, Paul Erlich’s antioverpopulation screed The Population Bomb and Ohio’s heavily polluted Cuyahoga river actually catching fire in the decade’s worst ecological disaster raised the public’s knowledge of environmental problems facing the nation during the politically turbulent 1960s. Senator Gaylord Nelson a Democrat from Wisconsin and an important advocate of environmentalism proposed grass roots, nationwide environmental movements in 1969. The first Earth Day was announced on a full-page ad that Nelson ran in the New York Times in 1970. In his own words Earth Day was a “blazing success” and has been observed on April 22nd ever since. In 1990 when Earth Day became an international holiday people throughout the world began to learn about recycling, composting and other

green minded activities. Sen. Nelson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his contributions to environmental causes before he died in 2005. Make sure you start recycling, walk to work or be mindful of wasting electricity by switching to energy efficient light bulbs this April 22nd. By Joe Korba

Petersville Baseball It’s spring and baseball is in the air. It’s interesting to think what kind of baseball electricity was in the air 78 years ago in downtown Petersville. They played their games at a field located just off Rt. 248 along the Hokendauqua Creek. There are photos of Petersville players in the Lehigh Twp. Historical Centre or in the Township’s Images of America book. Recently, three of the team’s scorebooks were donated to the LTHS. The Petersville General Store, owned and operated by Floyd I. and Barth (Marsh) Reimer, had the books until the store was sold. From the Petersville scorebook covering the 1933 season information relating to the teams, players, and the games played as well as highlights was extracted. The men who participated that year were; Arthur, Dorner, Hanzl, Heffelfinger, Henry,

Harold Rice of Beersville. Rather than listing various facts and highlights from the score book, perhaps it would be fun if we make believe a few of the players are sitting around the potbelly stove in the middle of the Petersville store on a cold evening. Players like Charles ‘Shorty’ Yost, outfielder; L. Miller, catcher; Lester Reimer, shortstop; Mack, pitcher; and the scorekeeper, Harold Rice. MACK starts the conversation with a complaint by mentioning, this year we only had four other teams in our league, Danielsville, Berlinsville, Treichlers, and Walnutport; and we only played each other twice.

These interior views show the Petersville General Store in 1930, when it was owned by Floyd and Bertha Reimer. (Courtest Lester A. Reimer.)

Petersville baseball team members Lester Reimer (left) and Charles “Shorty”Yost stand in the Petersville baseball field in this 1934 photograph. The field was located where the Whispering Hollow Mobile Home Park is today. (Courtesy Lester A. Reimer.) Kemsner, Kish, A. Kohler, D. Kohler, E. Kohler, Koons, Kratzer, Mack, L. Miller, Muschlitz, E. Reimer, L. Reimer, Strohl, and Yost. Petersville umpires that year were; Harry Reimer, Kline, Kober, Koons and Feidler. The scorekeeper was

MILLER chimed in , yea, and our league record was 4 wins and 4 losses. The four games we won were when we beat Berlinsville twice: 6 to 2 and 9 to 0, Danielsville and Walnutport: both 8 to 5. Sure, REIMER said, but we lost to Treichlers twice. FLOYD walked over to the stove and took a seat as he asked, how many players have you had this year? HAROLD said, we had 19 guys that played at one time or another, and three of them we recruited for some of our tougher games. They were Kish and Henry from Seemsville, and Arthur from Delps. After some conversation about expanding FLOYD, with a smile on his face, remarks that the store business was pretty good this summer and fall, just how many times did we play on our home field? HAROLD checked his book and said, well 4 Continued on Page 28

Petersville Baseball Continued from Page 22 league games plus 14 of 23 practice games and a rained-out game makes a total of 19. Good, very good, states FLOYD, chuckling, we better make sure we keep our field in good shape. Maybe next year we can squeeze in another game or two, then, we just might be able to buy new uniforms. MILLER, jumps in with, we played three double headers. MACK says to HAROLD let’s talk about stolen bases; HAROLD replies that 75 bases were stolen

in the 30 games. Well, FLOYD announced, you better get going, it started to snow, It’s getting late and I need to close up. Think spring everybody, so we can get started and do it all over again. Good night fellas! So ended the 1933 Petersville AA seasonal highlights discussion around the old potbelly stove in the Petersville general store. In closing, I would like to extend to everyone an invitation to visit the museum at the LTHS Centre in Pennsville. The officers, directors, and active members provide a real walk through memory lane, which I’m sure will evoke fond childhood memories as it did for me. The museum’s opening day for the season will be on Sunday, May 15, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and again on Sunday, May 29, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Beginning in June, it will be open 1 PM to 4 PM every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month, with the season ending on October 9th. Submitted by Bob Reimer This article was edited for space, to read the full “conversation” between the 1933 Petersville AA team, visit our website at www.townandcountrygazette.com

Never Doubt There Are Angels Never doubt there are angels Among us all the time, Those who come to encourage us When it’s our time to mourn, And the ones who share our joy, When we welcome a newborn. They’re the ones who come to visit Or call us now and then Just to say they have missed us And Wonder how we’ve been. They may be our friends and neighbors Or strangers who pass our way. Never doubt there are angels, We see them every day!

Friend of Career & Technical Education Award Honor Patricia Hartwell, Director of Corporate Human Resources for B Braun Medical, Inc., received the 2010 Friend of Career & Technical Education Award at the Lehigh Career & Technical Institute Joint Operating Committee meeting on Wednesday, March 23. Ms. Hartwell was recognized for her efforts in establishing industry partnerships and technical training initiatives between B Braun Medical, Inc. and LCTI. “Patricia Hartwell’s contributions to the mission of career and technical education are countless,” said Clyde K. Hornberger, Ed. D., Executive Director of LCTI.“Her work with LCTI’s Advanced Manufacturing initiatives has laid the groundwork for enriching both the high school and adult education programs.” Ms. Hartwell has fostered the B Braun/ LCTI relationship for five years. What began with assessment and training for employees in Allentown has culminated in the establishment of a LCTI training facility in the B Braun manufacturing plant in Irvine, California. With Ms. Hartwell’s help, B Braun and LCTI developed a technical training program that raised the skill level of B Braun employees to meet the demands of today’s automated industrial environment. “It is an honor and privilege to be selected for the Friend of Career and Technical Education Award,” said Ms. Hartwell. “However, the true award is being able to partner with LCTI in delivering quality technical education as part of a workforce development strategy.” Reinforcing her belief in the value of workforce development, Ms. Hartwell serves on the Executive Committee and is the co-chair to the Industry Committee of the Lehigh Valley Workforce Investment Board, Inc.

They served in the US Army in the 39th Infantry Scout Dog Platoon attached to the 173rd Airborne Div., II Corps, LZ English, South Vietnam in the central highlands and mountains from June 1969 to June 1970. The Events of September 11 are a grim reminder that tragedy can strike anyone, anywhere, anytime. Let us all make an effort to reflect on the wonders in our lives even as we pause to mourn our losses. Prayers and concern are daily offered to all who were touched in any way by the tragic events in New York City, Washington, or Pennsylvania. The Gazette

Recipe Round-up Fresh Fruit Kebabs Full Of Flavor, Not Fat (NAPSI)—Delicious desserts are the grand finale of any meal. For a light, flavorful dessert that is also guilt-free, try Honey-Citrus-Olive Oil Fruit Kebabs. Seasonal fruits such as cantaloupe, honeydew, pineapple and strawberries make this one sweet treat you can feel good about eating. To assemble the kebabs, place fresh fruit on bamboo skewers, then drizzle with a glaze of honey, lemon juice, orange liqueur and extra virgin olive oil. Though more commonly used on vegetables and pastas, olive oil is versatile, full of flavor and can be used with a variety of foods, including fruit. Sprinkle kebabs with chopped mint leaves and powdered sugar. Serve alone or pair with lemon sorbet and cold-press coffee or iced tea for a more sophisticated take on this tasty dessert. With fresh, light flavors, fruit kebabs are a great way to satisfy sweet cravings. For more recipes and other cooking tips using hearthealthy olive oil, visit www.aboutoliveoil.org.

April 3, 1958 Another month has started. Three months in the New Year already passed us by. The first of this month was April Fool’s Day. An old saying is, “On April 1st you can send fools anywhere you want.” I am not sure if the persons who are sent or those doing the sending are the fools. I will leave that up to you to decide. This week is Holy Week and Friday is Holy Friday. An old belief is that we should sow cabbage seeds on Good Friday. But I can’t figure things out correctly. My parents did no work on that day because it was a holy day. How can we sow cabbage seeds if we are not to do any work? (Clover seeds should be sown on the first of the month.) Also we should clean the rooms in our houses that day and burn the sweepings. That will bring us good luck. But if we are not to work, how do we receive good luck from committing a sin? Well, I don’t like working too hard anytime, so I will rest that day even more than usual. But I will try hard to think of our Savior and what he endured that day. And then comes the day that both young and old wait for, Easter. Some are glad to show off new clothes, others are happy to find eggs in their baskets, and many appreciate seeing relatives whom they haven’t seen for a while. Let us not forget to think again about our Lord on Easter and what that day means in our lives. A happy day to all on this big Easter day.

Make A Wish! Happy Birthday To have your name appear in the birthday column, please print legibly the necessary information. Return the completed coupon to the address on the form. We will only list birthdays that occur within our publishing weeks. Will appear as space permits. - All names based on information received. Local Watershed Association Works to Educate the Public The Bertsch-Hokendauqua-Catasauqua watershed association was formed on February 4, 2009. The founding members were drawn together by a mutual concern for quality water within their region. Its creation was the final step in placing all of Northampton County’s major watersheds under the volunteer protection and leadership of local citizens. The BHCWA is committed to protecting and improving the 80-square mile watershed drained by the Bertsch, Hokendauqua and Catasauqua Creeks and their tributaries. Their mission is to promote stewardship within the watershed while protecting, enhancing and restoring the watershed area. The watershed spans the area of the Lehigh River between Lehigh Gap and the Borough of Catasauqua as well as to the source of each stream. The association’s main goal is to ensure clean safe drinking water for current and future generations. BHCWA has been very active, in addition to writing their mission statement, bylaws and following the procedures for establishment as a nonprofit organization they have sponsored numerous public education events and programs such as the Open House held in June 2009 at the Allen Township Municipal Building which introduced the organization and the watershed region to the public, two Lehigh River float trips, a bat chat in October 2009 and three hawk banding hikes in late 2009. The BHCWA, in cooperation with the Mary Immaculate Center, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and the Lehigh Township Historical

Society conducted a winter walk in February 2010. A similar fall walk in partnership with the Lehigh Valley Hiking Club was held in October on the same property located in Lehigh and Allen Townships, Northampton County. A total of 42 participants ranging in age from 2 to 72 participated in the two hikes. These hikes, consisting of a threemile loop, were led by BHCWA members, Bob Hosking and Bud Cole. Discussions included local history, geology, biodiversity, and flora and fauna. The property provides excellent habitat for deer, gray and red squirrels, raccoons, red foxes, striped skunks, opossums, muskrats, cottontail rabbits, weasels, black bears, wild turkeys, woodpeckers, song birds and many other native Pennsylvania wildlife species. Monthly meetings are held at 7:00 PM on the second Monday of each month, at the Pennsville Hotel in Lehigh Township." Visit our website for upcoming events www.bhcwa.com For meeting locations and more information contact Jim Wilson 610746-1971. Dining Out Tips How to make dining out fresh, healthy and affordable for families (ARA) - There are times when pulling together a meal at home isn't in the cards; and finding time to cook a meal and gather everyone around the table is just too hard. The easiest time-saving solution is going out to eat, but that too can seem daunting when looking for a family meal that has both good nutrition and comes at a reasonable cost. Not to fear, menus and prices are changing. Greater emphasis has been placed on eating fresh, and, when possible, local foods in recent years. And, as the demand for healthier menu options has grown across a wider audience, more restaurants at a variety of price points have responded by offering foods made with fresh ingredients, at prices that won't hurt the family budget. This trend also means that consumers have to be savvy about where - and what - they're eating. What's presented as healthy isn't always the best choice. The best defense here is a good offense. Becoming informed about the dishes you're likely to pick and the restaurants you frequently visit will allow you to make the right choices. There are a few key things to look for when taking the family out for a meal: * Fresh ingredients. These can be particularly hard to come by in a restaurant setting, so it's good to find restaurants that have a mission to serve fresh foods. Some restaurants, like Souplantation and Sweet Tomatoes, make the effort to ensure that the food they offer on their salad bar and the ingredients in their freshly prepared foods come straight from the farm to the restaurant kitchen, with as little transit time as possible in between. That means that the food not only tastes better, it's also in optimal condition for healthy eating. * A wide variety of options. Families have to cater to a lot of very different taste preferences, which can make dining out a challenge. And we all know it can be a challenge to get kids to choose healthy foods

over junk food. By going out together to a restaurant that has a buffet format coupled with freshly-made wholesome foods, you'll be able to let everyone pick out what's to their taste with the peace of mind that they're eating well. * Know nutrition. Make it a point to talk to your family about healthy ingredients and how they make a difference in their lives. It's also useful to explain calories - how many go into a healthy diet, what's too little and what's too much - and give kids examples of how many calories are in a variety of prepared foods. Some restaurant websites, like that of Souplantation, make it easy to find out exactly what the nutritional values are in each item they serve. Having a realistic view of what goes into the food you eat plays a big role in making healthy choices when eating out. By knowing what to look for, it's easier to make smart choices at restaurants that are wallet-friendly, disproving the myth that it costs a lot to eat the healthiest foods. And when you find a place that meets the requirements of healthy, affordable and fresh, spread the word to friends. Whether you go out on a multi-family lunch date or give restaurant gift cards, you'll be sharing smart ways to stay healthy with your family and friends.

Seafood for every taste and any budget Continued from Page 44 way to a perfect seafood meal. * Start simple. When eating seafood for the first time, or introducing seafood to kids, start with something simple. Try shrimp as a topping on a salad or your favorite pizza. Shrimp is great seafood for beginners because it is widely available and very reasonably priced. * Try it grilled. Seafood is often prepared oven broiled or sauteed, but why not try your next piece of fresh fish, such as salmon, grilled over an open flame? "Wood-fire grilling sears in the natural juices of fresh fish while adding subtle flavor," says LaDuke. "Not to mention, grilling is a healthful way to prepare protein-rich seafood." As you decide what your next seafood meal will be, consider Chef LaDuke's advice and know that even with so many options to choose from, there are a host of great tasting dishes for every taste and any budget.

Small Changes Add Up To A Healthier Lifestyle (NAPS)—Making small changes every day may help your family have a healthier lifestyle. Here are a few to consider: Eat a Variety of Colorful Produce A balanced breakfast can help you start the day with focus and energy. A 6-ounce serving of juice is equal to one serving of fruit or vegetables, according to the USDA. Be sure to choose juices made from real fruit and without added sugar or artificial ingredients. To reduce consumption of unwanted pesticide residues, choose organic fruits, vegetables and beverages when possible. Snack Well Snacks such as string cheese and nuts are great sources of protein for on-the-go energy. For added crunch, pair with fresh apple slices and organic, whole-grain crackers. Kids love color and choice. Ask children to choose their favorite red, yellow and green vegetables, then slice and serve with hummus for a fun “traffic signal” snack. Pack simple fresh veggies such as sliced carrot and celery sticks for lunch. Get Moving Try to balance getting adequate rest and daily exercise. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that children ages 6 to

Page 45

17 should do 60 minutes of physical activity or more each day. Keep it fun for the whole family; try walking, jumping rope or cycling together. Drink Up Hydration is important. Soda sweetened with sugar can add empty calories, so choose water or dilute fruit juices with sparkling water. Choose naturally decaffeinated beverages such as fruit juice or water after lunchtime. Celebrate special occasions with nonalcoholic sparkling beverages such as R.W. Knudsen Family® sparkling Celebratory® beverages. Protect the Environment Buying organic products helps support farmers who are building healthy soil and promoting biodiversity that encourages wildlife to thrive. Where possible, use public transportation or carpool. If it’s safe enough for you to bike or walk to work, the extra effort may also boost your fitness in addition to reducing vehicle emissions. To help families make smart choices, R.W. Knudsen Family offers wholesome fruit products that contain no artificial flavors, preservatives or added sugar. Week of the Young Child is held each year to honor young children and thank teachers and all those who make a difference in young children’s lives. The theme for WOYC 2011 is Early Years Are Learning Years® Early Literacy Developing early reading skills is crucial to children’s success in school. Children who enter school with larger vocabularies start school ahead of children who have not been exposed to enriching language environments. Reach out and help children get the early literacy foundation they need to succeed in school. Early Childhood Programs Create a family story time. Invite families to participate in your story time and other reading activities. Some parents, grandparents, or other family members may enjoy reading or telling stories to a group. Others might become a reading partner to a child in the classroom, while some parents may prefer to chaperone a field trip to the library. Thanking Teachers Early childhood teachers educate and care for young children on a daily basis. They are helping these children build a learning foundation that will get them ready for school and support them through their lives. Public Policy and Advocacy Getting yourself and others involved in advocacy work is a hands-on way you can make a difference in the lives of young children.

DAV Auxiliary Seeking New Members Continued from Page 46 April 10 at 1:30 p.m. The DAV Auxiliary helps our veterans by volunteering in hospitals and veterans homes, legislative efforts to help encourage our legislators to pass legislation for the health care and benefits our veterans have earned, promotes patriotism, and several projects throughout the year to help raise funds to help our veterans and their families. Please come and join us to better improve the quality of life our veterans rightly deserve. WDIY’s Spring Membership Drive Friday, April 15 WDIY 88.1 FM, Lehigh Valley Community Public Radio, kicks off its spring membership drive Friday, April 15 at 6 a.m. The on-air drive will run through Saturday, April 23. During this nine day drive, the station is hopeful that listeners will show strong support for the local public radio station, considering the on-going threat of federal funding for public media. “These are uncertain times for public media. But one constant remains; support from our members. And we’re hoping they speak up, loud and clear during our fundraiser. Doing so will show Congress that public media is important and worthy of the relatively small amount of federal support it receives,” says Rebecca Walz, Development Director for the WDIY. “However, most of revenue comes from local contributions, including our members. Membership is by far our most important means of financial support,” says Walz. Local contributions make up over 80% of the station’s overall operating budget. With that idea in mind, the station will take to its airwaves, as it does twice yearly, to encourage those that listen to contribute financially to the station. The station will be thanking members by planting a tree on their behalf, in partnership with the City of Easton. WDIY’s overall membership budget for the fiscal year is $160,000. According to Walz, the

Page 47

station is slightly behind budget at this time, and has recently reached out to lapsed members, those who have let their membership expire over the last year. WDIY is a community public radio station, providing the Lehigh Valley with NPR news, a wide diversity of music and locally produced public affairs programs. The station is heard on WDIY 88.1 FM Allentown/Bethlehem, 93.7 FM Fogelsville/Trexlertown, 93.9 FM Easton/ Phillipsburg, and at www.wdiy.org.

A New Children’s Book About Money (NAPS)—There’s good news for parents who want to teach their children about the value of money—and how to manage it. A new line of educational books has been created to help children learn about financial subjects. The first in the series is “My Money Journal: A Safe Space For Tracking Earning, Spending & Saving” by Karris Golden and Melanie Decker. The book is designed so children can fill it with personal information, photos and drawings. Adults can use this one-of-a-kind journal to introduce the concepts of earning, spending, saving and goal setting.

Using the prompts in the book, parents can share their personal knowledge, stories and experiences as a way of helping children make wise decisions about their future. Said Golden, “It’s never too early to develop financial skills.” To learn more or to save by ordering online, visit www.traders press.com/naps. A new interactive book has been created to help children learn how to manage money.

Dining Out With Food Allergies: Expert Advice for a Safe Meal (NewsUSA) - When dining out, Americans with food allergies can find restaurant visits stressful, if not hazardous. Cross-contamination, uninformed servers or mixed-up orders can easily turn a dinner date into a fiasco involving EpiPen and ambulance. The good news? Many restaurants are taking steps to accommodate America's 12 million diners

Page 57

who have food allergies. Consumers can make informed decisions, whether they're sensitive to shellfish or have celiac disease, a condition in which the body cannot process gluten. "There have never been more tools available to the consumer with food allergies to access health information and to act on what they find," said Andrea Levario, executive director of the American Celiac Disease Alliance. Levario, on behalf of UNO Chicago Grill, offers the following tips to help consumers enjoy safe and healthy restaurant meals: - Research your options online before you come in. Responsible chains put menu information online. For example, UNO presents detailed health information, including notes about its gluten-free dishes, on its Web site, www.unos. com. If a restaurant doesn't post nutrition and ingredient information online, try calling ahead to speak to a manager. - Take advantage of posted information. Many restaurants offer nutritional information through lobby kiosks. Other establishments may have pamphlets that they can provide upon request. - Alert your server. A good server will make your experience his top priority -- he will want to ensure that you have an enjoyable, safe meal. Tell your server about your specific allergies, and ask him to communicate your needs to the kitchen. - Ask the manager for special accommodations. Managers should personally check special-needs orders, adding another safety-control measure to your meal. "Dining establishments are growing in their understanding of food allergies and other customer health needs -- some in response to new laws, some voluntarily like UNO," said Levario. "I believe these activities are an example of a very positive health-consciousness trend within the restaurant industry."

Photographs Needed Northern Lehigh Future Focus will be publishing a photo-book on Slatington/ Northern Lehigh High School & community sports teams & players later this year. As this is expected to be a large undertaking, Future Focus is asking for the public’s help. They are still seeking old photos or copies of photos, which they can borrow. The book will include photos from the earliest days of organized school and community sports up through the present. Especially of interest are old team and individual photos up through the

1970’s. It is hoped that the finished product will be a comprehensive photo history on our area’s sports teams, and be a great keepsake for all ages. However, we need the public’s help to ensure a great finished product. Please consider letting future focus borrow your photos to include in the book. The book will be separated by decades, and include the high school sports of football, basketball, baseball, wrestling etc. Star player, exceptional team and legendary coaches’ profiles will also be included, as well as photos and information on the many community baseball teams the area had in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Additional help is needed in research, writing and layout. Persons with these skills, those who are interested in helping in any way with the project, or those who have photos to share are urged to call Robert at (610) 767-7626 or Marilyn at (610) 767-5817.

Happy Birthday!

Hearty, Healthy and Hot – Lunch is Served! In this tight economy, people over the age of 60 have less to worry about when it comes to their food choices. Lehigh County is fortunate to have eleven senior centers where meals are served; ten centers serve meals Monday through Friday, and one is open Tuesday and Thursday. In each case, the service boasts quality meals with great variety that could stretch food dollars immensely. For instance, eating a larger noontime meal at a center will give you the freedom to eat lighter meals for breakfast, supper, and snacks at home. The net effect is that your weekly food bill should be smaller since the need to buy higher priced proteins, fruits and vegetables has been diminished. An added bonus is that while you are enjoying a nutritious noontime meal you will also have a chance to meet and socialize with people. Any Lehigh County Resident over the age of 60, and their spouse regardless of age, is welcome at the centers. Voluntary donations for the meals are encouraged,

but not required. Guests and visitors under the age of 60 will be asked to pay a reasonable fee. Monthly menus, listing what will be served, are posted at each center and are listed on the County website at www.lehighcounty.org. For more specific information, call the Agency at 610-782-3034

SAVE UP TO 20% OF YOUR HEAT! If you have a fireplace in your home, 20% of your home’s heat can be lost up the flue! Do a simple candle test… light a candle and SLOWLY go around the edge of your fireplace opening – or the edge of the fireplace doors, for those homeowners with doors. See what happens to the flame. From the midpoint and up across the top, the flame will move slightly TOWARD the fireplace. This shows the heat leaving your house. At the bottom of the fireplace, the flame will move towards your room. This is the COLD AIR coming down the backside of the flue and heading straight into your cozy warm home! The Top Sealing Damper was originally invented as a replacement damper for rusted-out heatilator fireplace dampers. We have installed 900+ top-mount dampers, 300 as replacement dampers and 600 on masonry fireplaces. They save energy, reduce cold air drafts, make the room quieter, and make starting a fire easier because of the warm column of air that has replaced the standard cold, wet column of air that is normally in your flue.

This well constructed, superbly eningeered damper eliminates 90% of the winter heat and summer cooling loss that leaks past your current damper. It also eliminates downdrafts and keeps moisture and animals out of your chimney and home. Moisture in your chimney causes unwelcome odors and leads to deterioration of bricks and mortar. The Lyemance Top-Sealing Damper works year round to protect your chimney. That’s why thousands are installed each year.

• Easy to operate • Seals in warmth and energy • Stops animals from entering your home • Seals out moisture to extend chimney life • Stops downdrafts • Helps prevent chimney odors

Lyemance energysaving dampers are available only from chimney professionals

Professionals always sell the sturdiest, most durable, and most effective products available – the ones you can’t find in your local stores. Why? They stake their reputation on

what they sell. Lyemance Dampers are only sold through professionals because it takes a professional to properly size and install a Lyemance Damper. Once installed, it’s easy as pie to use – with a simple tug on the handle, it’s open and with another tug, it’s closed. Why wait? Begin saving energy and increase your comfort now. Don’t waste another dollar in energy loss – begin your long friendship with Lyemance, the leader in top-sealing dampers.

School Slate Garden Flag Fundraiser Now that spring is finally here why not decorate your garden or yard with a garden flag. Northern Lehigh Future Focus has just the flag for you. Future focus is currently holding a school slate garden flag fundraiser. The 12” X 18” nylon garden flags are an exact replica of the new pole banners on the General Morgan Bridge. The flags depict an old school slate with the wording “Slatington Established 1864” “Blackboard Capital of America”. If you do not want to place a flag outdoors, why not buy one for indoors. The flags are an attractive indoor decoration as well, which can be hung on a living room, office or den wall. The garden flags are $20 each, and proceeds from the flag sale will go towards the Slatington Memorial Park Project, Phase I of which has been recently completed on the site of the old Slatington High School. Additional landscaping and a water fountain are planned for this spring. The flags are available at D.L. Stevens Antiques, 560 Main Street and Galio’s Market, 43 S. Walnut Street; both in Slatington. For more information contact Dan at (610) 760-0685.

Walnutport Park Project Underway The Walnutport park has been undergoing a facelift as of late. The park, near the police department and municipal building, is having outdated, damaged and obsolete equipment and buildings demolished and replaced. Phase one of the proposed four-phase project is complete with a new playground and parking lot. The first part of the project was partially financed with a grant from DCNR. But with DCNR looking towards Rails to Trails for many of their future projects the borough had to look to other avenues for financing and the local community for the ways and means of making the upgraded park a reality. Phase two of the park project is currently

underway with the new pavilion construction almost complete. The new pavilion was financed with a casino-matching grant of nearly $337,000. While the money is the main mover of the project the borough workers and other volunteer's time and manpower are what is getting the work done. Volunteer work and local business' donations are not only important for the actual work but they also help bring grant money to Walnutport. Mike Wentz is the grant coordinator for the borough. “It looks really good for the grant people to see local people volunteering, says Mr. Wentz. Continued on Page 71

BLUE MOUNTAIN TOWN & COUNTRY GAZETTE | April 7, 2011

Page 71

Walnutport Park Project Underway Continued from Page 70 “Whenever we get grant money they like to see local volunteers working.” The original plan for the park project was spanned out over a ten-year period and with the first phase already complete and the second underway it is on schedule. The third phase of the park project would relocate one of the ball fields; add a walking path and landscaping. The final part of the project will reposition another baseball field, complete landscaping and spectator seating will be built. Mr. Wentz made it clear that without

the help of area businesses and individuals that this may not have been the case. He'd like to thank Livengood Excavators, Bellview Pump, Lorah Excavating, Thomson's Meat Market, Erschen's Garage, volunteers from the fire company, the borough workers who worked for free nights and weekends and everyone else who helped with the project. If anyone is interested in helping with the continuing park project please contact the borough office at (610) 767-6634. By Joe Korba

She is young and energetic. She is a sweet dog waiting for her forever home. Come and meet me and my friends. Can't wait to meet you and fall in looooooove!! PHOENIX Terrier/Spaniel Mix: An adoptable dog in Whitehall, PA Large • Young • Female Phoenix is a very nice girl who came to our shelter when her owner was forced to move to an apartment and couldn't take her along. She just turned 1 in January, she is spayed and up to date on her shots, seems to love everyone she meets and seems to be fine with other dogs too. Not really sure of her mix, what breeds she is, some of her paperwork that came with her says Spaniel, some says Terrier so not quite sure. She sort of has a Pit Bull Terrier type of look, but has long wavy hair and whatever the mix, she's a great girl who deserves to be back in a loving home. Come and meet me and my friends.
