Indianland Garden Club Meeting
The Indianland Garden Club, organized in 1954, will hold its first meeting of 2011 on Tuesday, March 8, in the fellowship hall of Hope Lutheran Church, Cherryville. The organizational meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. and refreshments will follow. There will be a discussion of the programs to be held throughout the year. Also, responsibilities of members and committees will be reviewed. Dues are payable at this meeting. Anyone who has an appreciation for plants and flowers are welcome to join the garden club. Interesting informative programs which are generally centered on nature, plants, flowers, etc. are presented during the year. Members bring specimens and plants for judging each month and earn points. At the end of the year, persons accumulating the highest points are recognized.

In March, members may bring the following specimens for judging: Pussy willow, crocus, forsythia, and houseplants which include palm plant, geranium, crown of thorns, hoya. Artistic design: Go Fly a Kite - arrangement showing motion; Waiting for Spring - dried flower arrangement; and Mountain Greenery arrangement using outdoor greens. The garden club meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m., from March to November, at Hope Lutheran Church for its regular meetings. Other locations are sometimes chosen for the picnic and Christmas dinner. Other activities are held throughout the year which include trips and a plant auction in spring. Lehigh Valley Bluegrass Festival What was begun as a humble effort to bring quality Bluegrass music to the Lehigh Valley area and to reward the bands that played that music, has turned into a major production with monthly Bluegrass shows featuring Nashville bluegrass recording artists at the Kempton Rod and Gun Club as well as the highly successful Lehigh Valley Bluegrass Festival, held in July. The man behind this effort is Lynn Peters of Walnutport, a bluegrass musician himself and founding member of the band Santara Wind. Lynn comes from a Bluegrass family. His dad, Don Peters, a noted banjo player from the early days of Bluegrass, dragged his family to the festivals and shindigs that became prominent in the 50s and 60s. “I caught the bug early, around the time that most kids were grooving on the Beatles and Rolling Stones. That music never interested me. OK, there were catchy tunes but all those drums Ay-Yi-Yi...and heavy metal; forget it!” Lynn went to the Dobro, an instrument that he loved, took lessons from noted Dobroist Dick Blattenberger and went on to play in his youth in several “Brat Bands”. These bands were put together with the other kids of the festival crowds, lasted for a season and formed anew the next summer. Notable names from the Pennsylvania region include Louie Setzer, Anthony Hannigan and, of course, his brother Larry. He was once asked to “go on the road” with Jimmy Martin, an offer he declined for the following reason. Adulthood brought on certain realities, like the need for a “Day Job”. Never one for half measures Lynn started in trucking, got the concept and broadened out into owning a trucking company with several hired drivers. Selling that he moved on to Real Estate where he became the top producer and finally manager in his company.
Currently he is semi retired in the heating oil industry where he has more time for his true love, Bluegrass music. Semi retirement has meant only one thing... full time in Bluegrass. You can see Lynn at most of the summer festivals pulling in with his motor home and great big trailer with “Lehigh Valley Bluegrass Festival” painted on the sides. “Lynn Peters has had a profound effect on the Bluegrass music scene in Pennsylvania. He took the concept of the Shindig, and almost overnight, turned it into a sustainable enterprise that rewards the musicians, the hall where the music is played and puts money aside for his festival. Everyone gets rewarded, not least the audience. It’s brilliant” said Ken Pierson, formerly of the Pocono Bluegrass Society. Indeed, while other organizations are withering away, Bluegrass Nights at the Kempton Rod and Gun Club, providing both Nashville and regional bluegrass acts to the Lehigh Valley, is prospering. Local Scouts Earn Regional Honors Continued from Page 14 Members of New Tripoli’s Purple Moose and the Lightning Slow patrols earned second and third place respectively at this year’s Snowbound, a competition that tests boys’ outdoor and rescue skills. First place went to the White Ops patrol from Troop 1600 in Allentown. With eleven events ranging from fire building to first aid, Snowbound was held January 14-16 at Settler’s Camp in Jonas, Pa. Forty-two patrols from throughout Lehigh, Northampton, and Carbon Counties undertook the challenge for top honors in the field, and woods, of competition. The New Tripoli scouts, ranging in age from 12-17, accomplished their feats while working cooperatively within their patrols to move their outdoor supplies and gear over miles of terrain on large wooden sleds. The Lightning Slow patrol was comprised of Jesse Stutzman, Isaiah Jones, Josh Kromer, Ben Fruchtl, Jacob Steidinger, Ryan Overstrom, and Dakota Haldeman, and was led by Davis Evans. The Purple Moose Patrol was led by Lucas

The Battle of Iwo Jima Nearing 66 years ago was "The Battle of Iwo Jima." Obviously famous for the flag raising, how many people know it was the second flag raising that day? And how miniscule a number know of the eulogy after the battle that day of February 23, 1945? As our Marines are fighting in Afghanistan and we are losing more of our young to a contested war let us never forget the sacrifices the Marines make for you and me. Iwo Jima First to Raise the Flag Initially a patrol by Fox Company successfully made it to the top of Suribachi and upon descending Colonel Chandler Johnson called for a platoon from Easy Company. Lieutenant Schrier was chosen to lead the platoon. He was told by Colonel Johnson that “IF” they made it to the top of Suribachi to raise the flag that Lieutenant Greeley Wells gave Colonel Johnson. The flag had been brought from the USS Missoula. Upon reaching the summit a pole with a bullet hole through it was found and used to secure the 54” x 28” flag. The image was photographed by Lou Lowery of Leatherneck Magazine. While he was avoiding Japanese fire he fell down an embankment and broke his camera, but he saved the film The Secretary of the Navy, viewing the activities on shore with Lieutenant General Howlin Mad Smith, said he’d like the flag for a souvenir. When Colonel Johnson heard this he was defiant and ordered his adjutant to secure that flag and find a replacement flag. Iwo Jima Second to Raise the Flag All had come together at Camp Pendleton training for Island X (Iwo Jima) and came to Iwo Jima aboard the USS Missoula. Sousley, Block and Hayes all reported to Mike Strank – 2nd Platoon. Gagnon was a runner. Bradley, 3rd Platoon, was a Navy Corpsman. Hayes walked toward the pole facing Strank with his back to Genaust. Strank saw Bradley walking past and asked him to help and he went between Strank and Block. Sousley then walked to the pole from the foreground of Genaust’s camera while Gagnon approached behind to the right with his rifle slung over his shoulder standing behind Bradley…..Rosenthal spotted the clustering movement and captured 1/400th of a second with his Speed Graphic camera. Rosenthal would later take a “staged photo” that would lend to the controversy of the raising of the first and second flags. Top Pet Toxins Both known and unknown toxins can be found hiding in our houses and yards. In 2010, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) in Urbana, IL, fielded more than 167,000 phone calls about pets exposed to possibly poisonous substances. Human Medications Human medications are once again at the top of the list of pet toxins for 2010. Almost 25 percent of calls concerned human medications accidentally ingested by pets. The most common culprits include over-the-counter medications (ibuprofen, acetaminophen), antidepressants and ADHD medications. Insecticides About 20% of the calls to the APCC are about insecticides. Insecticides are commonly used on our pets for flea control and around our houses to control crawling and flying bugs. The most serious poisonings occurred when products not labeled for use in cats were applied to them. Always follow label directions. Rodenticides Baits used to kill mice and rats are mostly grain based. Not only does this attract rodents, but it attracts dogs and cats. There are several different types of rodenticides that can cause seizures, internal bleeding or kidney failure. Always make sure these items are placed in areas that pets cannot access. People Food Xylitol, grapes, raisins, onions and garlic are commonly ingested by our pets. Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs, while onions and garlic can cause anemia if enough is ingested. Xylitol, a sugar alcohol used to sweeten sugar free gums and mints, can cause low blood
sugar and liver failure in dogs. Veterinary Medications Many medications made for our pets are flavored for ease of giving. Unfortunately, that means that animals may ingest the entire bottle of medication if they find it tasty. Common chewable medications include arthritis and incontinence medications. Contact your veterinarian if your pet ingests more than his proper dose of medication. Chocolate Chocolate contains methylxanthines, which act as stimulants to our pets. The darker the chocolate, the more methylxanthines it contains. Methylxanthines can cause agitation, vomiting, diarrhea, high heart rate, muscle tremors, seizures and death. Household Toxins Cleaning supplies, such as bleach, acids, alkalis and other detergents, can cause corrosive injury to the mouth and stomach. Other household items such as batteries and liquid potpourri can cause similar problems. Always keep these toxins behind securely locked doors. Plants Both house plants and outdoor plants can be ingested by our pets. Lilies can cause lifethreatening kidney failure in cats, while sago palms can cause liver failure in dogs and cats. Keep house plants and bouquets away from your pets. Herbicides Many herbicides have a salty taste, and our pets will commonly ingest them. Always follow label directions and keep pets off treated areas until they are dry. Outdoor Toxins Antifreeze, fertilizers and ice melts are all

Screening Kindergarten screening activities include a review of informal social and health history, developmental areas, functional vision and hearing, and speech and language. Kindergarten screenings are held during the spring at the school district. Further screenings are conducted through the Instructional Support Teams in each school throughout the year for any student that may be in need of special education services. Parents who wish to request screening and evaluation for their child may do so by contacting the principal or counselor in their child’s school building. Evaluations If you believe your child needs special education services, an evaluation will be conducted by a team. The team shall be composed of the parents, persons familiar with the child’s development, persons knowledgeable in such areas of suspected disability, persons trained in the appropriate evaluation techniques and, if possible, persons familiar with the child’s cultural background. All information gathered through the screening and/or re-evaluation process is considered confidential under Section 438 of the General Education Provisions Act.

Northern Lehigh Historical Society The Northern Lehigh Historical Society will meet on Wednesday, March 30 at the Lehigh Gap Nature Center. The meeting will open with a business meeting at 7:00 followed by a presentation by Dan Kunkle, Executive Director of the Nature Center. Dan will conduct a tour of the new visitor and education center. For more information about the Lehigh Gap Nature Center, including driving directions, check their website at www.lgnc.org. 2010 was very productive. Work on the Slate Heritage Trail continued, with grading and surface preparation being done in Washington Township, and excavation and landscaping of the gardens at the Bed Bug Cave. The Gathering –2010 was the most successful event to date. Plans for 2011-2012 include the construction of a pavilion beyond the east entrance of the Trout Run Covered Bridge followed by the construction of a roof over the stage at the west end of the Bridge. The NLHS is part of a coalition of local community groups, businesses and municipal governing bodies known as the Venture Group. One of the goals of the Venture Group is the construction of a restroom and pavilion/meeting room at the Slatington Trailhead. Work on the facility started in 2009. The restroom facility is under slate roof and nearing completion, with construction of the pavilion/meeting room slated to commence this spring. Tax-deductible donations to the project can be made through the NLHS, with a notation “Trailhead Project” written on the check. Continued on Page 40

Slatington Trailhead and D&L Trail Update At the most recent meeting of the Venture Group, special guest Scott Everett from the D&L Corridor Commission displayed pictures of the trail construction southbound from Slatington to Treichlers. By the end of summer 2011, a fifteen mile section running southbound from Bowmanstown should be complete. Plans have also been approved for major upgrades at the Slatington Trailhead including a new gravel surface for the parking lot, landscaping, walkways, and wheelchair access for the restrooms and pavilion. This work is tentatively scheduled for this Spring. The Venture Group meets again in mid February. Work on the restrooms and pavilion is temporarily on hold because of the weather but only a few slates remain to be installed to finish the roof on the restrooms. The concrete for the pavilion has been poured and framing will begin as soon as we experience better weather. Completion is anticipated by early summer. Recent donations have allowed work to proceed and complete the basic structures. The benefit of an attractive trail hub and business magnet in the area is becoming a reality. Additional financial support is expected from all of the local service organizations who participate in the Venture Group but there is still a need for continued support. Items which are currently unfunded include electrical fittings and fixtures, commercial kitchen appliances, cabinets, and furniture. Individual contributions are also welcome and all contributors will be recognized when the buildings are complete. To date we have raised just over 85% of the funds needed to complete the project. The Battle of Iwo Jima Continued from Page 16 Iwo Jima and the Rabbi We would fail in our duty, not just to each other as Americans, but to our brothers and sisters around the world, if we failed to remember the eloquent eulogy delivered by an American rabbi at the dedication of the Marine Cemetery at the end of the fighting. Rabbi Roland B. Gittlesohn was the first Jewish Chaplain for the Marine Corps. More than 1,500 Jewish Marines were in the invading force at Iwo Jima. Rabbi Gittlesohn was in the thick of the battle, ministering to fallen Marines of every faith under enemy fire. He shared their fear, horror and despair. His unending efforts to comfort the wounded and inspire the fearful earned him three decorations. After the battle, the Division Chaplain, Warren Cuthriell, a Protestant minister, asked the rabbi to deliver the memorial sermon at a combined religious service dedicating the Marine Cemetery on Iwo Jima. Cuthriell wanted all the fallen Marines honored in a single, nondenominational ceremony. Unfortunately the Marine Corps, being a reflection of America, was still strongly prejudiced. A majority of the Christian chaplains objected to having a rabbi preach over predominantly Christian graves. The Catholic chaplains, in particular, and in keeping with what was then Church doctrine, opposed any form of joint prayer service. To his credit, Cuthriell refused to alter his plans. But Gittlesohn wanted to spare his friend Cuthriell further embarrassment, and so decided it was best not to deliver his sermon. Instead, three separate services were held. At the Jewish service, to a congregation of 70 or so who attended, Rabbi Gittlesohn delivered the powerful eulogy he originally wrote for the combined service: "Here lie men who loved America because their ancestors generations ago helped in her founding, and other men who loved her with equal passion because they themselves or their own fathers escaped from oppression to her blessed shores. Here lie officers and men, negroes and whites, rich men and poor . . .together. Here are Protestants, Catholics and Jews together. Here no man prefers another because of his faith or despises him because of his color. Here there are no quotas of how many men of each group are admitted or allowed. Among these men there is no discrimination. No prejudices. No hatred.
Theirs is the highest and purest democracy. Whosoever of us lifts his hand in hate against a brother, or who thinks himself superior to those who happen to be in the minority, makes of this ceremony and the bloody sacrifice it commemorates, an empty, hollow mockery. To this, then, as our solemn duty, sacred duty do we the living now dedicate ourselves: to the right of Protestants, Catholics and Jews, of white men and negroes alike, to enjoy the democracy for which all of them have here paid the price. We here solemnly swear that this shall not be in vain. Out of this and from the suffering and sorrow of those who mourn this will come, we promise, the birth of a new freedom for the sons of men everywhere." Among Gittlesohn's listeners were three Protestant chaplains who were so incensed by the prejudice voiced by their colleagues that they boycotted their own service to attend Gittlesohn's. One of them borrowed the manuscript, and unknown to Gittlesohn, distributed thousands of copies to his regiment. Some Marines enclosed the copies in letters home. An avalanche of coverage resulted with major news magazines publishing excerpts and the entire sermon being read into The Congressional Record. The Army broadcast the sermon to American troops throughout the world. In 1995, the last year of his life, Rabbi Gittlesohn re-read a portion of the eulogy at the fiftieth commemoration ceremony at the Iwo Jima Memorial in Washington. In his autobiography, Rabbi Gittlesohn reflected, "I have often wondered whether anyone would ever have heard of my Iwo Jima sermon had it not been for the bigoted attempt to ban it." Bob Faro
