Hall of Fame Holds Induction Dinner The Lehigh Valley Recreational Sports Hall of Fame is holding the Second Annual Induction Dinner on April 9, 2011 at the Northampton Community Center. This event has drawn plenty of media attention and recognizes athletes, coaches and youth sports directors from the Pocono Mountains south to Perkasie, east from Alpha, NJ and west to Kutztown. Youth at risk throughout the Lehigh Valley are helped with sports programs beginning at age 3, trips to pro and college games and field trips are held. College visits are arranged for teenagers through the Rough Rider Athletic club in cooperation with the Boys and Girls Club of Easton. Last year members of our age 16-18 basketball teams were given two pair of sneakers and all of the children received t-shirts and awards. Our track team is now in its 11th year. No child in RRAC/LV is ever refused due to inability to pay. Questions - Joe Zemba 610-297-0669 or roughriderac@gmail.com

Lehigh Township Historical Society Did you know? Historic Pennsville Schoolhouses Director Jean Kosc discovered a surprise while going through a collection of century old articles. The Elaine Newhart collection, which is dated from 1902 – 1906, contained an uncredited writing: “Es Schul-haus an de Grick” - the schoolhouse at the creek. The schools mentioned were located just four blocks north of the Lehigh Township Historical Centre on Danielsville Road. The first, one of the oldest schools in Eastern Pennsylvania, was located near the Huth’s Sawmill from which it took it's name. Over the years Huth's school was neglected and fell into disrepair. The second building was rebuilt near the same site. The schoolhouse had 18-inch thick
Pennsville school circa ‘23-’24 whitewashed walls. The clean, simple lines of it's architecture left an impression on the artist Mr. Herbert J. Kleppinger. His memories of the school are shown in a pencil sketch done fifty years after first laying eyes upon it, which was published with the article. Kleppinger remembered that at age four his first teacher was Miss Laura Reinhard who also attended Huth’s school. Her brother Henry, later a Catasauqua principal, began his career in the same building. Other schoolmasters were James E. Kocher of Northampton, John Gable and Thomas M. Arndt. Arndt, who lived in Lehigh Township Continued on Page 5

Other scholars mentioned in the article include Arthur Berlin, Frances E. Leibenguth, Adinah Dreisbach, John D. Kleppinger, William J. McBride, Anna Sherer, Annie Brady, Emma Houser, Lillie M. Mill, Charles Houser, and Reuben Kleppinger. The third Huth's school was a two-room building built in 1908 and is now a family dwelling since it closed in 1956. The article and sketch are now framed and located at St. Paul’s Schoolhouse in Indianland where you can read the entire published article when St. Paul's is open to visitors. Call the historical society for open house dates or to set up an appointment. If you have any further information about the three Huths schools, scholars, faculty or sawmill please contact any member of the historical society or call Kenneth Marsh (610-767-5989). The Rockville Grille Becomes Family Friendly You soon might not recognize the Rockville Bar & Grille after it drops the bar from its name and undergoes a facelift and menu upgrade. According to the manager, Don Heiney, the Rockville Grille is trying to move away from its’ image of a neighborhood bar to a more family friendly establishment providing quality takeout as well as an affordable option for people who want a bite to eat in a casual environment. The current owner has recently sold the liquor license and made the dining room smoke free after being one of the only bars in the area for almost 50 years. Siblings Theresa and Eddie Marx, owner and cook respectively, are working hard to make their new vision for the business a reality. Along with not selling alcohol any longer the bar is making a move to drastically improve their menu and are already popular with nearby businesses for their takeout. “We just installed a new grill for steaks, make all of our own burger patties and cut fries every morning,” says Don Heiney. “Eddie makes homemade sauce for all his subs.” Along with an improved menu the Rockville Grille has an 86-inch projection TV for sports and other events like pay-per-view UFC matches
Theresa and Eddie Marx and a friendly, relaxing environment. They have weekly specials and according to the cook Eddie, “The best cheese steaks around.” If you'd like to stop by or call for take out the Rockville Grille in Danielsville is open from 11am to 11pm daily and its’ number is (610) 657-5329.“I always tell everyone that comes in for the first time that they'll be back again and again after trying our food,” says Eddie. Stop in and see if it lives up to his hype. If Eddie's cooking matches his enthusiasm you'll be in for a treat.

SAVE UP TO 20% OF YOUR HEAT! If you have a fireplace in your home, 20% of your home’s heat can be lost up the flue! Do a simple candle test… light a candle and SLOWLY go around the edge of your fireplace opening – or the edge of the fireplace doors, for those homeowners with doors. See what happens to the flame. From the midpoint and up across the top, the flame will move slightly TOWARD the fireplace. This shows the heat leaving your house. At the bottom of the fireplace, the flame will move towards your room. This is the COLD AIR coming down the backside of the flue and heading straight into your cozy warm home! The Top Sealing Damper was originally invented as a replacement damper for rusted-out heatilator fireplace dampers. We have installed 900+ top-mount dampers, 300 as replacement dampers and 600 on masonry fireplaces. They save energy, reduce cold air drafts, make the room quieter, and make starting a fire easier because of the warm column of air that has replaced the standard cold, wet column of air that is normally in your flue.

This well constructed, superbly eningeered damper eliminates 90% of the winter heat and summer cooling loss that leaks past your current damper. It also eliminates downdrafts and keeps moisture and animals out of your chimney and home. Moisture in your chimney causes unwelcome odors and leads to deterioration of bricks and mortar. The Lyemance Top-Sealing Damper works year round to protect your chimney. That’s why thousands are installed each year.
• Easy to operate • Seals in warmth and energy • Stops animals from entering your home • Seals out moisture to extend chimney life • Stops downdrafts • Helps prevent chimney odors
Lyemance energysaving dampers are available only from chimney professionals

Professionals always sell the sturdiest, most durable, and most effective products available – the ones you can’t find in your local stores. Why? They stake their reputation on
what they sell. Lyemance Dampers are only sold through professionals because it takes a professional to properly size and install a Lyemance Damper. Once installed, it’s easy as pie to use – with a simple tug on the handle, it’s open and with another tug, it’s closed. Why wait? Begin saving energy and increase your comfort now. Don’t waste another dollar in energy loss – begin your long friendship with Lyemance, the leader in top-sealing dampers.

A Touch of Irish Gaelic Translation: Bealtaine grá dóibh siúd a bhfuil grá dúinn, sinn Agus iad siúd nach bhfuil grá dúinn, Go raibh Dia a gcroíthe Agus más rud é nach féidir dul a gcroíthe sé, Bealtaine sé seal ina rúitíní Mar sin, beidh a fhios againn dóibh ag a limping! The Joke Corner A man stumbles up to the only other patron in a bar and asks if he could buy him a drink. "Why of course," comes the reply. The first man then asks: "Where are you from?" "I'm from Ireland," replies the second man. The first man responds: "You don't say, I'm from Ireland too! Let's have another round to Ireland." "Of course," replies the second man. Curious, the first man then asks: "Where in Ireland are you from?" "Dublin," comes the reply. "I can't believe it," says the first man. "I'm from Dublin too! Let's have another drink to Dublin." "Of course," replies the second man. Curiosity again strikes and the first man asks: "What school did you go to?" "Saint Mary's," replies the second man. "I graduated in '65." "This is unbelievable!," the first man says. "I went to Saint Mary's and I graduated in '65, too!" About that time in comes one of the regulars and sits down at the bar. "What's been going on?," he asks the bartender. "Nothing much," replies the bartender. "The O'Malley twins are drunk again." How can you tell if an Irishman is having a good time? A: He's Dublin over with laughter!! Q: Why can't you borrow money from a leprechaun? A: ‘Cuz they're always a little short

How to Interview a Lawn Care Service Provider Given the various duties that a lawn care service provider can do, beyond just lawn maintenance, it is important to interview and select the lawn care professional that will be the best fit for you. Instead of just opening the phone book and signing a contract with the first company listed, it pays to do your homework and interview a few companies. Not every lawn care service provider offers the same services, certifications and professionalism. Here are some of the things I mentioned that she should look out for, and questions she should ask. Do you have commercial pesticide license? The license signifies that the provider has been instructed about how to safely apply fertilizers, weed and insect controls-whether organic or synthetic. Also, if they don’t have a commercial pesticide license, they cannot legally apply any chemicals to your lawn. Period. Do you have insurance-business, liability and worker’s comp? This is another biggie. If the lawn care provider does not have insurance, if they damage something on your property, you may or may not be able to get the damages repaired. Additionally, if the business owner or injure themselves on your property, you want to make sure that they have the proper insurance so that you cannot be held liable. Do you give notice before spraying chemicals? This is especially important if you have children or pets, as you will want to make sure that they are out of harm’s way, and stay off the grass for the specified time. Additionally, you don’t want them to come do a massive weed treatment one week before your big garden party or cookout. Burned weeds everywhere? Not pretty! What is included in each weekly visit? What treatments are included in my yearly service plan? That might seem like a no-brainer, but it is always good to get in writing what you are paying for. A list of included services will also help you plan any events you have at home. Can the service provider do any seasonal garden maintenance, or just lawn maintenance? A little bit of extra landscaping goes a long way toward increasing your home value. It also makes a home more inviting. However, many people don’t add extra landscaping because they don’t want to take care of it. Hiring a lawn care service provider that can help with landscaping maintenance makes caring for your garden much easier.

Recipe Round-up Boost Your Health With Fish (NewsUSA) - There may be plenty of fish in the sea, but you could probably use a few more on your plate. Seafood -- like shrimp, tilapia, and salmon -- is brimming with nutrients. What really sets seafood apart from other healthy foods is that it's a natural source of healthy omega-3 fatty acids. "Fish has become a go-to food for a real health boost," says Aviva Goldfarb, author and founder of "The Six O'Clock Scramble," an online weekly menu planner and cookbook. "It's a lean protein and a great way to get a dose of omega-3. Since our bodies cannot make omega-3, it's important to regularly include them in our diets." Studies show that a diet containing omega-3s may decrease the risk of certain cancers, decrease blood pressure, reduce Alzheimer's symptoms, improve arthritis and joint pain, and promote heart health. "A lot of people are intimidated when it comes to preparing fish, but by keeping the ingredients simple and flavorful, you can prepare a healthy, delicious dish in minutes," says Goldfarb. Experts, including the American Heart Association, recommend consuming at least two servings of seafood a week. Not sure where to start? Try this easy, delicious recipe for Grilled Tilapia Broccoli Penne, which packs a huge supernutrient punch in one meal. The fillets add an authentic, flame-grilled taste, no grilling required. One Man’s Best Friend If the true measure of success is doing what you love dog handler Marcelo Chagas is an unequivocal winner. Mr. Chagas, who has been professionally breeding and handling show dogs for almost 30 years, lives his passion every day. On February 14th Mr. Chagas and his prize 15-inch beagle Lola won “Best of Breed” at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Lola’s win is the first time a Beagle has won the honor 3 consecutive years in the prestigious dog show’s 135-year history. Lola is also the top winning 15inch Beagle in AKC history. “This win will forever be one of Lola’s career highlights,” beams Mr. Chagas. The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is the 2nd longest continuously running sporting event in the United States next to the Kentucky Derby and is one of the highest rated sports specials on network television. This exalted event draws handlers and dogs from all over the world and is embraced in New York City. The winning handler rings the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange and the Empire State Building is lit in the Kennel Club’s purple and gold colors the week of the dog show. Marcelo Chagas and Lola both call Upper Milford, Lehigh County their home but Mr. Chagas’ journey began in his native Brazil. When he was a young teen his family took him to his first

dog show and he began a life-long love affair with the sport. “While some people see their career as work, I see mine as passion,” says Mr. Chagas. “I do work hard at showing dogs, but my love for the sport starts with my love for the dogs.” His first show dog was an English Cocker that Mr. Chagas competed with on the junior circuit while honing his craft. “Through competing at dog shows I met some of my closest friends and was mentored by some of the greatest handlers in South America,” says Mr. Chagas. Mr. Chagas, who shows all breeds, exclusively breeds Torquay Beagles himself. He began breeding the Beagles in Brazil 20 years ago and continues in the USA. His close friend Marco Flavio Botelho and his wife Alessandra continue to breed the Torquay beagles in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Lola was the first Torquay beagle born in the United States. Mr. Chagas takes great pride in being an owner, handler and breeder and considers presenting the dogs that he breeds himself to be the ultimate privilege. He is planning on competing with Lola again at next year’s dog show. Mr. Chagas feels that he and Lola share a very close bond and she’ll let him know when she’s tired of competition. “The one thing I can say about Lola is that at a very early age I feel she gave me her heart,” says Mr. Chagas. “We have accomplished everything we set out to accomplish and now she only asks one thing in return: ‘come on! Let’s go! Just one time around the ring!’ Regardless of how tired I am, Lola is always ready to go.” “Always try to be the person your dog thinks you are,” is one of Mr. Chagas favorite quotes and he offers some words of advice to first-time dog owners. “Acquiring a dog is a life long commitment, whether it’s a show dog or a dog that is fortunate enough to be rescued from a shelter. Owning a dog is a privilege and like all privileges it comes with responsibility,” says Mr. Chagas. “They love us unconditionally and ask for so little in return. We get so much more than we give.”

NLHS Presents “Once On This Island” NLHS Brings Haiti to Slatington in “Once On This Island” by Maggie Surdovel We have all read news about the troubled island of Haiti in the time since a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the nation in January of 2010 and this March the Northern Lehigh Little Theatre will bring this devastated island to the stage with
their Spring production of “Once On This Island.” The musical will show the poverty of the peasants in Haiti through a story of forbidden love between a peasant and a wealthy hotel heir from the rich side of the island. The show tells the story of TiMoune, a peasant girl who prays to the four Gods of the island for more excitement in her simple life. The Gods answer her prayers, sending her on a journey to prove that love can withstand the power of death. TiMoune’s life takes a turn when she discovers
Daniel Beauxhomme, a wealthy boy who crashes his car in her peasant village during a storm. Despite her families’ wishes, TiMoune cares for and saves Daniel’s life, all the while falling in love with him. A pawn in the Gods’ game, TiMoune will risk everything to be with Daniel, though the odds against them are overwhelming. The musical will coincide with Operation Jewel, a fundraiser by the NLLT to raise funds for schools in Haiti. Donations will be taken at every performance, and Operation Jewel wristbands will be sold. All proceeds of Operation Jewel will be sent to “Give Haiti Hope,” an organization which gives directly to schools in Haiti. The students have been involved in the fundraiser since the beginning of rehearsals, creating artwork and reports on conditions in Haiti and connecting the situation on the island to their roles in the show. “Once On This Island” will be performed March 11th at 7 pm, March 12th at 2 pm and 7 pm, and March 13th at 2 pm at the Northern Lehigh High School auditorium. To purchase tickets in advance, please contact Sherri at 484-357-2282, or e-mail smolitoris@nlsd.org.

Concrete Landscapes Build Greener Gardens (NewsUSA) - Americans love having backyards for planting gardens, holding outdoor parties and giving children a safe place to play outdoors. But some homeowners find themselves with lessthan-ideal backyards. Maybe the backyard slopes too much for a picnic table. Maybe the home's in an arid area, where green grass requires expensive irrigation. For many homeowners looking to improve their backyards, concrete masonry might provide an unexpected, inexpensive solution. Concrete can mimic any surface, like stucco, European cobblestone or aged slate, allowing
In steep yards without flat surfaces for planting herb or flower gardens, setting up tennis nets or supporting tables and chairs, concrete walls can make backyards more enjoyable. Landscapers can build terraced, concrete brick walls that create level areas for patios, garden planters and extra seats during large parties. Concrete masonry can help control erosion and water drainage, too. For homeowners with problem backyards, concrete masonry can provide an inexpensive, durable and attractive way to make landscapes both people- and eco-friendly. For more information about concrete masonry, visit www.ncma.org.
Happy Birthday! concrete landscaping to blend into any area alongside any style of home. Concrete masonry proves both stylish and durable. Unlike wooden decks, concrete structures require no upkeep and don't succumb to termites, mold, rot, weathering or other problems. One couple replaced their wooden deck with a concrete patio, then found themselves with an insect-free backyard. "With the wood deck, it seemed like mosquitoes would breed and then come up and attack," said Melissa Werpy, who used concrete masonry to renovate her backyard. "We can now be outside until midnight, and mosquitoes aren't a problem." Concrete masonry can build attractive desert landscapes, too. Some homeowners use water irrigation to grow green grass in arid regions. But irrigating a lawn costs money and wastes water, a precious natural resource. Homeowners can use segmented, concrete walls to build attractive driveways and terraced landscapes without growing grass. The landscape might not look green, but avoiding irrigation helps desert homeowners save the planet.

SPRING FORWARD! Daylight Savings is March 13th. Don’t forget to change your clocks.
Military Personnel and their Families Get Free Tax Help! Military members and their spouses may be eligible to receive free tax return preparation assistance. The IRS and U.S. Armed Forces participate in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program which provides free tax advice, tax preparation, return filing and other tax assistance to military members and their families. 1. Armed Forces Tax Council The Armed Forces Tax Council oversees the operation of the military tax programs worldwide, conducting outreach with the IRS to military personnel and their families. The AFTC consists of tax program coordinators for the Marine Corps, Air Force, Army, Navy and Coast Guard. 2. Volunteer Tax Sites Volunteer assistors at military-based VITA sites are trained to address military-specific tax issues, such as combat zone tax benefits and the new Earned Income Tax Credit guidelines. 3. What to Bring To receive this free assistance, you should bring the following records to your military VITA site: Valid photo identification Social Security cards for you, your spouse and dependents or a social security number verification letter issued by the Social Security Administration Birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents Wage and earning statement(s) -- Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R Interest and dividend statements (Forms 1099) A copy of last year’s federal and state tax returns, if available Checkbook to get routing number and account number for direct deposit Total amount paid for day care and day care provider’s identifying number Other relevant information about income and expenses
4. Joint returns If your filing status is Married Filing Jointly and you wish to file your tax return electronically, both you and your spouse should be present to sign the required forms. If it isn’t possible for both of you to be present, a valid power of attorney that allows tax preparation can be used to sign and file the return. 5. Special Exception There is a special exception to using a power of attorney for spouses in combat zones that permits the filing spouse to e-file a joint return with only a written statement setting forth that the other spouse is in a combat zone and is unable to sign. For more information, review IRS Publication 3, Armed Forces’ Tax Guide, available at http://www. irs.gov or order a free copy by calling 800-TAXFORM (800-829-3676).

Kill the Weeds, Spare the Grass (NewsUSA) - As temperatures warm, thoughts turn to picnics and barbecues on the lawn -- and that means doing some yard maintenance. But attacking weeds without doing your research could lead to some unsightly brown patches. So, how do you rid your lawn of pesky weeds without harming your grass? The maker of Spectracide herbicides and pesticides offers the following tips for defending your lawn against weeds: * Choose the best herbicide to kill the weeds. Most herbicides fall into two categories: selective and non-selective.You'll need a selective herbicide to kill the weeds in established lawns or on small patches around trees, shrubs and flower beds. Choose a non-selective herbicide for large jobs or where you don't want any plants to grow, like on concrete and brick walkways, driveways, patios and around fences. Take a few minutes to read labels carefully. Labels should clearly tell you whether a herbicide is selective or non-selective. Remember, nonselective kills any vegetation it comes into contact with, while selective herbicides control only the weeds listed on the label, and do not harm nontarget plants. * Consider the size of the area that you'll be treating. Selective and non-selective herbicides typically come with three choices for application: concentrate, ready-to-spray and ready-to-use. For large areas, use a concentrated formula, mix it with water and apply with a tank sprayer, or use a ready-to-spray bottle with a hose-end attachment. For spot treatments, a ready-to-use spray bottle will su Time your attack wisely. For optimal results, apply herbicides on a sunny day when temperatures are 60 degrees or higher. If there's any chance of rain, hold off until a drier day. Always read and follow label directions

carefully. Different products have different usages and application rates. * Know what to expect. Once the herbicide dries, you don't have to worry about the rain washing it away. However, because many herbicides only kill what's there -- they aren't preventative -- you'll have to deal with new weeds as they appear.
