G A Z ETTE Welcome to our Special 25th Silver Anniversary Commemorative Issue The Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette has been an integral part of the life of the people in Lehigh Township and the surrounding communities for 25 years. We are thrilled to be publishing & distributing this Special 25th Silver Anniversary Commemorative Issue throughout our local communities. The Gazette, as a free paper, depends on its advertisers for its existence, and we have had many faithful, steady advertisers. Some have advertised in every issue since the publication began. We would like to thank every one of them for the part they play in making the Gazette able to bring relevant news and information to the community. At this time we would like to extend a huge thank you to all the great people, contributors, readers, etc who have made this publication achieve the level of service it has provided to the community for the past 25 years. It certainly has been fun and rewarding for the staff and owners to
produce the Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette every other week! The Gazette is intended to be a resource for the local community and publish the kind of good news that the daily papers will not print including news that will help public service organizations like churches, schools, clubs, and other nonprofit organizations. Our publications are filled with items about people we know, the businesses in our area, and what is happening in and around our communities. Please take the time to enjoy this special issue of our publication we think you will definitely enjoy seeing the old ads, historic perspectives and time capsules! We hope you continue to enjoy our future issues of the paper - thank you so much again!! Sincerely, The Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette Team www.TownandCountryGazette.com

Son Succeeds Father At Harding Funeral Home
David M. Harding is no newcomer to the funeral business -- he grew up in it and took a very active part in it the last few years-- but on May 1 he took an important step in his career when he became director of the Harding Funeral Home, 25-27 North Second Street, Slatington, succeeding his father, George M. Harding, who was director for the past thirty-two years. George had decided to go into semi-retirement and let David handle the responsibilities of running the business. George and his wife, Kathryn, while continuing to maintain ties with the business, expect to devote more time to relaxing, traveling, and escaping the restrictions of the business that has been their chief occupation since May of 1954, when George took over the work begun by Henry Heinzelman and then continued by son David Heinzelman. Altogether the funeral home has been in existenence for over ninety years. David Harding is a graduate of Slatington High School and Northampton Area Community College. After graduation he served his internship at the J. S. Burkholder Funeral Home, Allentown.
In addition he has worked with his father over the years, learning all the skills of the business. After thirty-two years of service to all religious faiths in the Northern Lehigh and Lehigh Township areas, the Harding Funeral Home, under David’s leadership, will continue to offer the same general funeral services as in the past. However, David hopes to emphasize even more strongly the need and advisability of prearranging funerals. A death in the family may create problems for survivors, which can sometimes be alleviated by discussion and pre-planning. Funeral and burial arrangements are an important consideration, says David, and should be discussed openly and frankly. Pre-arranging and sometimes pre-financing is a method some people choose to assist their survivors after death. People who would like information about pre-arranging, or about anything along those lines, can call David at 767-3011. In his “spare time” David is an active member of the Northern Lehigh Jaycees and serves on the board of the Slatington Skeet and Sporting Association. For relaxation he likes to engage in hunting, fishing and photography.
HARDING
FUNERAL HOME, INC. It was easy to decide on cremation. Now, what about the rest of the decisions? It’s easy to think that once you’ve decided on cremation, everything else is taken care of. There’s the matter of disposition, a service (or not), or, you can even have a funeral. Helping people with decisions like this is something we do every day. If you need to finish planning your wishes, call the experts.

“MY BIRTHDAY WISH” BY MICHAEL EMERICK
I remember the day that I was purchased by Brenda & Michael Emerick. I was very unsure of how my life was going to be affected. I had grown comfortable with Dale Shoemaker. He was a very efficient, no-nonsense, matter-of-fact owner...punctual and succinct. Brenda infused me with a personality I had not known before. It was actually an extension of her personality…warming, friendly, outgoing and fun! She got me involved with her family. Her husband Michael and sons Geoff & Zack and Brenda delivered me with exuberance I had not known before. Her husband took half the route and delivered me in his Clean Sweep Chimney service van. Brenda & her sons delivered me in their Ford Taurus wagon (which needed to have extra heavy progressive-rate springs installed to keep from bottoming out…as I was growing weight with each issue). One Christmas season they even rigged exterior Christmas lights on the Taurus as they delivered me--that was great fun! I was always well received at the distribution pointsex: the senior citizens sitting outside Superfresh patiently anticipating my arrival…and chiding (unfairly) the delivery person if I arrived a little behind schedule. I always enjoyed the special individual one copy deliveries that she went out of her way to make for those shut-in people who found it hard to get a copy at a nearby delivery spot before they ran out. It always made me feel so special when those appreciative people would leave homemade baked goods or jams as a “Thank You” for her efforts. I especially liked the imaginative full color covers that I began to have and the color ads that she incorporated with me. I always felt important in providing all the information and services to the area, but now I felt new pride in my fine clothing. Along those lines, Brenda transformed the office where I was reborn every two weeks. It took on the form of her personality. It was a warm, friendly environment that was fun to work in and many customers would spend extra time socializing after getting their ads or stories in. They would be greeted by Murphy & then Lola, the friendly YellowLabs-each often referred to as the “Gazette Dog” by many visitors. What a great assistant editor she was…licking the faces of toddlers…snoozing on her blanket in the afternoon sunlight streaming through the back or side windows. Lola & Murphy each guarded diligently against any strange sounds when Brenda would put in late hours at the Gazette office in the evening-making sure that I would be just the way she wanted. Most people never realized the many hours she contributed to my construction. Next to her family & dogs, I was the one who received her affection. I was her baby and she nourished me as one of her children. I, in return, gave her much joy by providing a format for her generous nature. She gave free space to many
non-profit service organizations, such as The Lehigh Township Fire Company and the Make-A-Wish Foundation, etc. She delighted me and her family when she would sneak pictures from her husband’s childhood collection & publish them on his birthday with some whimsical caption, but never identifying him by name. Many times readers would call in trying to identify the person as someone they knew. I so enjoyed the care she lavished on me and the fun she had with me. I always felt that each reader held a little piece of Brenda’s heart in their hands when they perused my pages. And I was always proud of the fact that I would often be passed on to a neighbor or shut-in person by the initial reader and not just thrown aside. When Brenda got ill and knew that our wonderful relationship would have to end, I was very proud of Brenda and Michael, in the midst of their despair & agony that they selected from the many would-bebuyers, someone they felt would not only be competent enough to run the business in a professional manner, but would keep the local interests and flavor upon which I was founded. So, at Twenty-Five, I have been through many changes-as has the community I serve. I look forward to the next twenty-five years of mutual beneficial growth. Celebrate your lives with me as I reflect your joys and special moments. We all share a beautiful space on this planet in Lehigh Township & Surrounding Areas-Let Us Enjoy It Together. The Gazette

The Borough of Bath COMPILED by Alice Wanamaker Beautifully nestled among the hills, at the head of the Monocacy Valley, which takes its name from the creek bearing the same name, and in the heart of a rich agricultural region and thriving economic area, lies the traditional town of Bath Borough. It is one hundred miles distant from New York, sixty from Philadelphia, eight from Bethlehem and eleven from Easton, the county seat. It is a beautiful town, with its advantage of pure air, beautiful surroundings and charming scenery. No stranger ever visits this locality without being charmed with its hills and valleys. If we ascend “Siegfried’s Hill”, west of town, an unobstructed view of the Monocacy and Lehigh Valleys is had for miles, affording a panoramic scene that seems to dissolve in the haze of the distant mountains. To the north and west, stretches the Kittatiny or “Endless Mountains’”, to the east are visible the lofty church spires of the Moravian town of Nazareth, five miles distant. To our south, lie the South or Lehigh mountains and the City of Bethlehem. Bath is in reality a part of the Scotch-Irish Settlement which was established in 1728, being the first settlement by white people within the Forks of the Delaware. There are so many people involved in making Bath, PA a destination location for travelers as well as a great place to live work and play. The Bath Business and Community Partnership is one such organization that can and will achieve the goals of the community with their mission statement: “Bath is a charming and quaint town located in the northern Lehigh Valley. An inviting, family-friendly community for residents and visitors alike, downtown Bath serves as a local center where one can easily walk to work, grab a bagel and coffee and expect to pass friend sand familiar fac-
es along the way. Families gather here, drawn by a sense of place and community, which can be felt and seen. Moreover, Bath is the type of historic, small town that so many of us dream about – it is a place where our kids can grow up and a place where we can grow old.” As a participant in the Lehigh Valley regional Main Street program, the Borough Business Revitalization Program, the BBCP received funding and support from the PA Dept. of Community and Economic Development, the Counties of Northampton and Lehigh, the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber Foundation and the Borough of Bath. In 2008 and 2009, the BBCP convened and led a series of community visioning meetings to develop a vision statement and accompanying strategic plan to implement that vision. Some of the projects that have been achieved by the Bath Business and Community Partnership include the Gateway Signs along Rte. 248, Doors of Bath Poster, Flower planters along main street bridge, The Bath Farmers Market which runs every Friday at Keystone Park from Spring to Fall, Signs and banners for the Farmers Market, Bath Community Day, a festival celebrating community and business the first Saturday in October at Ciff Cowling Field, Historic Plaque program that assists property owners in commemorating their properties heritage, the Façade program which helps property owners increase the value of their properties, Bath will be celebrating its 275th anniversary in 2012 – commemorating the milestone with activities and festivities leading up to the anniversary. With continued support from community members, volunteers, local groups and residents Bath will continue to grow and prosper now and in the future.

The Borough of Northampton History Northampton was once a global center for the manufacturing of cement. The Atlas Portland Cement Company was based there, until it was closed in 1982, due largely to foreign competition. Northampton was created from the villages of Siegfried, Newport and Stemton, which together were formed into an alliance in 1902.In 1909,Atlas petitioned county courts to change the alliance into a borough, reportedly because the change would make it easier for the company to send and receive mail. The Atlas Portland Cement Company plant closed in 1982, but borough residents—many of them former Atlas employees or their descendants—still identify strongly with the company and its history. The Atlas Portland Cement Company supplied most of the cement used in the building of the Panama Canal. The residents of Northampton are very proud of their town’s help in building one of the most famous canals in the history of the world. The Northampton Rec Center The Northampton Recreation Center has come a long way since its grand opening in November 2000. Our facility has become a hub for physical and social activity. Diverse age groups, ranging from preschool to seniors utilize our facility. The Northampton Recreation Center’s goal is to provide a quality environment for all its members. To ensure that we reach our goals, the Center is constantly providing new exercise programs, invigorating equipment and service. Robert Weinhofer, the Center’s director, oversees the day-to-day operations, assisted by a staff of nine part-time employees and a core of dedicated volunteers. For more information, you can contact the Recreation Center via telephone at 610-502-2990 or email reccenter@rcn.com or visit their website-www.eteamz.com/northamptonrec. CANAL STREET PARK At the turn of the century, the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company operated a canal paralleling the Lehigh River. With the improvements in transportation,
the canal was no longer the most efficient means of moving goods and the area was neglected. After many years, it was a place where youngsters would play unsupervised in a woodland setting. During the last thirty years, the Borough has reclaimed and restructured the area from the Cementon Bridge to the mouth of the Hokendauqua Creek to provide a setting that is the envy of many surrounding communities. Walkers and joggers can exercise, free from motor traffic, along the Heritage Trail. For the more energetic, lit basketball and tennis facilities are available. The pavilion near 14th Street can seat 75 guests, while the children play in the expanded tot lot. Softball, volleyball and horseshoe areas have been established and fishing in the beautiful Lehigh River is always an option. Many area couples began their lives together exchanging vows in the Gazebo. Others have pictures taken in the area, because of the natural, restored beauty. The Borough is fortunate to be able to maintain a large pastoral area where the serenity of nature might provide a calming retreat from a hectic lifestyle. The newest additions along the Heritage Trail are a number of exercise stations that were provided by the Northampton Area Exchange Club. Each station has an instructional guide for the most effective use of the equipment and they are conveniently located along the entire length of the Trail. 26th STREET PLAYGROUND In an area that was once land used for farming and with the efforts of Mike Faryna and other residents of the First Ward, the 26th Street Playground was constructed with a grant provided by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In the 1970s this multi-tiered facility enjoyed the laughter of children and the fellowship of picnickers for the first time. Time has only enhanced the beauty of the Park while the Borough has added many items to the Tot Lot and enlarged the modern restroom facilities. Two softball fields are available and on many evenings players of all ages enjoy basketball under the lights. Ample parking is provided in the area of two pavilions, one large enough to accommodate 125 guests, the other seats 75.

The Borough of Palmerton Text and photographs by Peter L. Kern The New Jersey Zinc Company (“NJZ”) was founded in Newark, NJ in 1848. Its products gained wide use in galvanizing, paints, and rubber, and in 1898 the Company chose the farmland at Carbon County’s Lehigh Gap for the creation of one of the nation’s most ambitious industrial plants. Palmerton was founded in 1898 and named after Stephen S. Palmer, the Princeton, New Jersey, President of New Jersey Zinc. The town was a planned community designed by a prestigious New York engineering firm. In less than six years it grew to a population of more than 5,000 as NJZ drew upon the influx of European immigrants to operate its plants. These new American families and their subsequent generations were endowed with a strong work ethic and they prospered along with the Company. NJZ was very conscious of its social responsibilities at Palmerton. A century ago, the Company built a hospital, provided free visiting nurse care, encouraged home ownership, and helped build numerous community schools. Even during the Great Depression, NJZ continued to provide work at reduced levels for all its employees. In 1966 New Jersey Zinc was acquired by Gulf+Western Industries (G+W). This large conglomerate operated NJZ until its sale in 1981 to a group of private investors incorporated as Horsehead Industries. Prior to the sale, G+W recognized that the production of zinc metal at Palmerton was no longer economically viable and in 1980 many operations were shut down. The new owners put their emphasis on processing readily available zinc-bearing industrial wastes and by-products. The zinc values recovered from these materials were sold to other smelters where they were converted into zinc metal. With the heightened environmental awareness
of the 1980’s, the United States Environmental Protection Agency designated the area adjacent to the East Plant as a “Superfund Site” and a 25year environmental remediation program was undertaken in Palmerton. A protracted decline in the price of zinc at the turn of the 21st Century forced Horsehead Industries into bankruptcy and its assets were sold. The operating portion of the business was acquired by Horsehead Corporation, a Pittsburghbased firm. Other assets of the bankrupt Horsehead Industries were also sold, including NJZ’s renowned Central Research Laboratory. This was purchased by the Palmerton Area School District and following extensive renovation it is now being operated as one of the District’s elementary schools. Recently, the original 120-acre West Plant site along Route 248 was sold. The buildings on this site have been razed and the new owners have plans for the construction of an office park. Prior to 1980, NJZ had approximately 1,500 employees. Thirty years later only one-tenth that number staff the remaining Palmerton zinc operations. Despite this 90% downsizing, the community retains its vitality and attractiveness as new industries have filled the void. Palmerton has a thriving downtown business area with a wide variety of stores and restaurants, a strong and viable public library, a modern hospital and health care services, attractive recreation opportunities at its magnificent Memorial Park Pool, and an eleven-acre park complete with bandstand in the center of town. Its close proximity to Blue Mountain Ski Area and the Blue Ridge Country Club make the community a microcosm of all that is desirable in small-town America. In 2012 Palmerton will celebrate the centennial of its incorporation as a borough. The community looks forward to its second century with the same spirit and enthusiasm of the earlier generations that made this town great.

The Borough of Slatington by Robert Stettner Slatington is going through a transformation. A one time slate manufacturing behemoth, and later a textile manufacturing center and bedroom community for former Lehigh Valley companies such as Mack Trucks and Bethlehem Steel, Slatington is now relying on its great location and natural beauty for its transformation into a Trail Town. Over the past several years with the cooperation of local government, area community groups, and the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor, Slatington and the entire Northern Lehigh area has been developing a trail system. The Slate Heritage Trail, which connects to the D&L Trail at the Slatington Trailhead at Main & Railroad Streets, follows Trout Creek westward out of Slatington and through the villages of Emerald & Slatedale. The D&L trail is completed Northward from the Slatington Trailhead toward Lehigh Gap, and continues into Carbon County. At the Carbon County border the D&L Trail connects with the vast trail system recently constructed at the Lehigh Gap Nature Center, and the Appalachian Trail. In fact, Slatington has fortune to be located near or intersected by seven major trail systems. In addition to the ones already mentioned, Slatington is adjacent to the Lehigh River Trail, The Log Cabin Trail, and the Lehigh Canal Trail. With these seven major trail systems, Slatington is poised to become both a starting point and a destination for hikers, bikers, walkers and users of the Lehigh River. In preparation of the increase in trail usage and influx of more people coming into Slatington, community groups such as the Northern Lehigh Historical Society and Northern Lehigh Future Focus have been working with the Borough of Slatington, Lehigh County and The D&L on developing the Slatington Trailhead, and adding amenities to the local trails. In the last few years a covered bridge and bathrooms were built at the western end of the Slate Heritage Trail in Slatington. Last year construction was begun on bathrooms and a pavilion at the
Slatington Trailhead. In addition historical markers, directional signage and kiosks have been added to both the trail and the trailhead to assist and educate both visitors and residents when using the trails. A comprehensive walking tour brochure of the entire Northern Lehigh area was completed several years ago, and is available throughout the area. Lastly, later this year a trail map highlighting all area trails will be available to trail users, and be distributed throughout the area. In the past few years the community of Slatington has also begun to embrace and promote its history and at the same time increase recreational opportunities for its residents. Historical markers have been placed throughout town, which tell the story of the town’s founding up to its slate manufacturing heyday when it was known as the blackboard capital of America. Banners on Main Street celebrate the town’s Victorian Architecture and its previously mentioned slate industry. Victory Park, on the southern end of town, is now home to an 18 tee; nine-hole disc golf course, and a sand volleyball court.Yearly 5K races using the trails and disc golf tournaments at Victory Park bring visitors to town and expose them to our trail systems and parks. Plans are underway to add a lighted basketball court to the park in near future. Ground was recently broken on the Slatington Memorial Park, once the site of the former Slatington High School. This passive park located right in the center of town will include benches, a fountain, a gazebo and other amenities. The park will allow a place for area residents to relax, hold community events and much more. We invite long time residents and new comers to get involved in the transformation of Slatington. A lot of work has been done, but there is still much to do. Join us on our journey in becoming a Trail Town and a recreation destination. If you haven’t been to town lately, come check us out, and go hiking or biking on a trail while you’re here!

The Borough of Walnutport by Doneta J. Merkle and Doris Smith Situated in the northwestern part of Northampton County, the Borough of Walnutport is 482 acres (10.17 square miles) in size with a population of approximately 2043 people. It was developed as a stop along the Lehigh Canal and named in 1830 for the many tall walnut trees that prospered there. This rural community was incorporated as a Borough in 1909. Closely tied to the river and canal, Walnutport’s economy was driven by the area’s zinc, coal and slate industries. Traffic on the Lehigh Canal gave way to the railroad and then later to the automobile. It was the growing popularity of cars that caused State Route 145 to be diverted – forever changing the face of Walnutport. However, a part of Walnutport’s history has been preserved and coexists with modern suburban conveniences. Today many people visit Walnutport for its most prominent feature, the 4-_ miles of scenic trails adjacent to watered sections of the Lehigh Canal. The Walnutport Canal Association operates a refurbished Locktender’s House and Museum and maintains this stretch of the canal for public fishing, boating, hiking and picnicking. The building dates back to 1829 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum includes history and artifacts from the canal era and is open for tours on Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. May through October and by appointment. Walnutport was incorporated as a borough on March 30, 1909 in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. In 2009 Walnutport celebrated its 100th anniversary. In January 2007 the Walnutport Centennial Committee was formed as an ad hoc committee of Walnutport Borough Council. The purpose of this committee was to plan the centennial celebration. Committees were formed and a yearlong celebration began on Saturday, June 7, 2008 in the form of an old-fashioned community picnic that was held at the Walnutport Canal Association Pavilion. The actual centennial
celebration was held Memorial Day weekend in May 2009 with a gala, parade, community block party, fireworks, and a community church service. On July 1, 2009 the Centennial Committee dedicated a time capsule, which is located in a planter outside Borough Hall. The Penn Big Bed Slate Company donated the slab of slate that covered the capsule. Also, in conjunction with the 100th Anniversary celebration, a 518-page hardbound history book entitled “Walnutport Pennsylvania, Then and Now” has been published. Copies of this book are available by contacting the Walnutport Borough Office. Each year on the 3rd Sunday in October, the Walnutport Canal Association holds its annual Canal Festival. This year they will be celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Festival. The Festival festivities include a Haunted Woods on Friday and Saturday, a 6K Run called the “Towpath Trot” on Saturday, and culminates with the Festival on Sunday, which includes food, crafts, exhibits, and entertainment all with a Victorian flair. The Festival is family oriented and free to the public. An essential component of the Borough is the Diamond Fire Company. Organized in 1893, they proudly protect approximately 2,300 people living in an area of less than two square miles. They are a vital part of the Borough with their modern buildings, equipment and trained volunteers. The fire department operates out of one station that protects a primarily residential and small business area. The department is a public safety department whose members are 100% volunteer. When local people hear the word “bingo”, the Diamond Fire Company comes to mind. Bingo has played an enormous role in the existence and continued success of the fire company. Bingo games are sponsored three times a week (Monday, Wednesday, Saturday) in their social hall. Local residents find the fire company social hall a popular venue on a Friday night for their delicious fish dinners.

Since the Walnutport Playground Association’s charter was approved on December 18, 1944, many people have been involved in the establishment of a playground in the Borough. Currently the Walnutport Playground Association supports and manages softball and baseball programs at three athletic fields. Also provided are a basketball court, tennis court, pavilion and a new children’s play area. At the present time the playground is currently involved in an improvements project. Their mission is to maintain, promote, provide, and improve the 13 acres of recreational playground facilities for the residents of the Borough. a memorial honoring men and women who resided in Walnutport at the time of their entry into the armed forces. This is the location where the veterans group conducts services honoring individuals who have served our country. Post 7215 is active and sponsors several events, including but not limited to charity benefits, holiday parties for children, participation in parades, funerals, and viewings, and state holiday observances. Our community is fortunate to have two churches where we can worship, both of which are located on Main Street. Christ United Church of Christ has been serving the Walnutport community since 1902. Christ UCC has always had a compelling mission and that is to welcome all into the grace of God’s love and fellowship of Christ and to serve the community. Sunday morning worship begins at 10:00 AM and Holy Communion is celebrated the first Sunday of each month, and during special services throughout the year. Their worship music blends traditional hymns and more recent songs. Except during the summer months, an adult choir supports their singing. Instrumental accompaniment is provided by organ or piano and occasionally they offer special music that is provided by a soloist, youth choir, men’s choir, or various instrumentalists and guest performances and speakers. Calvary Bible Fellowship Church was first established as a Mennonite Church in 1893. They offer various opportunities for worship and learning about the Lord Jesus Christ on Sunday morning as well as other services during the week as follows: Sunday morning fellowship time begins at 9:00 AM followed by a worship service/children’s program at 10:00 AM. A Sunday evening program/ service is held at 6:00 PM and on Wednesday evening a program/service is held at 7:00 PM. A shopping district has been developed in the borough along Route 145, which makes it convenient for people to shop locally. We encourage you to visit our community whether in support of one of our local organizations or for recreational purposes. And while you’re here, consider taking the Historical Walking Tour. Brochures with a map are available in the Walnutport Borough Hall lobby, located at 417 Lincoln Avenue, Walnutport. During your walk you will see, as mentioned above, how a part of Walnutport’s history has been preserved and coexists with modern suburban conveniences.

I became aware of a local organization created to help the Vietnam veteran and their family. I opted to share my knowledge of its existence through a story I wrote for the Gazette. It was my first story I ever wrote for publication and the editor Dale Shoemaker ran it on the front cover of the December 7, 1989 issue. The day the story ran it changed my life forever. Vietnam veterans were not welcomed home after serving their country so graciously. No one had time to sit with these veterans and their families just to talk out their problems. Many veterans came back from a combat zone and were placed in society in less than forty-eight hours! Most people just didn’t care. Thus, many veterans withdrew from society. I took it upon myself to try and heal some of those war wounds. I spoke with Cindy Beck Deppe, co-owner of Becky’s Drive-In, Berlinsville, about hosting a benefit for veterans. Gazette launches writer’s career Through veteran involvement Continued from Page 43 Santa’s Delivery. I did all the publicity myself and became very dependent on the Gazette to insure one successful event after another. For my veteran-related volunteerism I received The Chapel of Four Chaplains Legion of Honor Award, which opened another door, and almost immediately I became a trustee for them. The Slatington American Legion hosted many of the Legion of Honor Awards Ceremony. Salay was also a trustee for The Four Chaplains and together we coordinated them. They recognized so many people for their efforts. The Slatington Legion honored those people with The Chapel of Four Chaplains Wall in their hall where the ceremonies were held. In 1995 the Legion honored me by being the Orator of the Day at their 75th Memorial Day Service held on May 29. I was a non-veteran and their first woman speaker for their Memorial Day Services. The more I became involved in community events, the more writing I did for the Gazette, with it becoming more and more of a bi-monthly job. The Times News was looking to expand their coverage in the Northern Lehigh and Lehigh
Township. Patti Mihalik called me for an interview and hired me as correspondent and now it meant also snapping my own photos. When the Northampton Press, one of their eight sisters papers, launched that September, I became the Lehigh Township columnist, and covered the township, and snapped photos for them. It put me in a position where I started writing more stories and snapping more photos for the Gazette. People just loved to have their photo in the Gazette, which was like a Bible to the locals.
After the dedication ceremony for the POW/MIA Remembrance Highway sign which was held in front of the Slatington Borough Hall, PA Rep. Julie Harhart and Congressman Charlie Dent, and Slatington American Legionaires posed for a photo at the highway sign located on Route 248, near the Lehigh Gap. Sign was installed in May 1999. -Photo by Mary Ann Endy
Among those inducted into The Chapel of Four Chaplains Legion of Honor in June 1996 at the Slatington Legion were, from left, front row, Jim Ziegenfuss, Robert Carl, Frederick H. Ruch, Willard L. Loch, and Beatrice V. Oswald; and back row, Robert E. Rowlands, unknown, Owen Roberts, Wanda Sue Strohl, Jerry Bundra, Kenneth A. Hantz, and Sheldon W. Endy, Jr. Other locals missing in photo were Beatrice Green, Martha E. Falk, Everett and Marilyn Kaul, and Joseph A Prusak. (Standing in from of (Pop Endy) is his grandson Sheldon Mann who wanted to be in the photo, too. -Photo by Cindy Beck Deppe
One other important event snowballed from the veterans’ benefits. PA Rep. Julie Harhart was instrumental in having Route 248 named the POW/MIA Remembrance Highway that runs from Lehighton to Easton honoring our POW/ MIAs. It was of important significance to Sheldon and me for it was the Lehigh Township section of the highway that gave our Vietnam veterans their first real welcome home at Becky’s Drive-In, which is located on the highway. As a writer and veteran’s wife I was honored to cover this historic event. Continued on Page 45

Gazette launches writer’s career Through veteran involvement Continued from Page 44 Over the years I covered many stories, snapped thousands of photos, but also made many friends, which would have never happened without the Blue Mountain Town and Country Gazette. The Gazette has played a significant role not only in my life, but the history of our community.
POW/MIA banners greet motorists on both ends of the borough of Bath that acknowledge that Route 248 is the POW/MIA Remembrance Highway. -Photo by Mary Ann Endy At the end of 2009, I bid my correspondence career farewell, with my retirement. Since, I have written two in-depth feature stories for a hobby publication on Waldameer Park, in Erie. Many ask what was my favorite story I ever wrote – it would have to be the feature on war dogs, which featured Vietnam dog handler Brian Taras of Lehigh Township and his dog Gretel. The story on Vietnam veterans had a significant impact in the community. The veterans got more support and for the past twenty years, the people have showed more patriotism. Two of my favorite places to drive through are the borough of Slatington which flies Old Glory year-round on the PP&L poles that line Main Street since November 2001 (the Adopt-A-Flag Program was initiated by the late Slatington Councilwoman Marie Fister), and the POW/MIA banners to greet motorists on both ends of the borough of Bath that acknowledge that Route 248 is the POW/MIA Remembrance Highway.
Oval photo of Vietnam dog handler Brian Taras of Lehigh Township with his scout dog Gretel, that saved countless lives in Vietnam. Gretel is not a forgotten hero by her handler. Taras honored her by purchasing a brick with her name on it. He did not feel that is was necessary to honor himself - just her. It is located on the brick walkway at the Lehigh Northampton Vietnam Veterans Memorial located at the VFW Post 9264 in Macungie, PA. Through this brick, and the Internet I was able to locate Taras and write a heart-wrenching story on war dogs. -Photo of brick by Mary Ann Endy

Carl Grega opened Carl’s Service Center in 1972 in the former Lentz’s Garage, located at Route 873 and Old Post Road in Washington Township. The garage was built in the mid 1930’s and was owned and operated by Dewey Lentz from that time until 1972. Carl opened for business in July of that year as a full service gas station and auto repair shop. In the 90’s, Carl Jr. joined his father’s business. Besides working on newer model vehicles, both Carl and his son enjoy working on vintage automobiles. We have had many different addresses throughout the years but our location has never changed. Today the gas pumps are gone and the repair shop has grown to become a state of the art diagnostic center.

Some heroes find themselves in the spotlight after an isolated selfless act. Jacob Merkel belongs to a rarer quieter species of role models. For the past 64 years, he has tirelessly served the public as a volunteer firefighter with The Friedens Volunteer Fire Company. Merkel answered the call early in his life. Before he graduated high school, he was busy saving lives through fighting fires. Soon thereafter, as high school valedictorian, Merkel shared these words with his classmates, “We all have a mission in life. We all have a duty to perform. This is the reason God created man.” 64 years later, he is seated at a large impressive table he constructed for his family, confirming this conviction, saying, “And I have followed that calling to this day”. Throughout his extraordinary life, he has also contributed to the community by farming over 400 acres (winning one of the first Keystone Farmers Award), helping with the local food bank, and working as a full time mechanic at the Lehigh Valley Dairy. He also found time to sing in the church choir and work with the Washington Township Relief Association--all while raising a small army of children. Fire fighting is a very dangerous, complicated job that requires strength, skill, courage, and teamwork. For the Merkels, this daunting occupation has been a family affair. Their pan-generational

Citizen’s Spotlight Jacob Merkel service as fire fighters includes sons Joel and Jed, grandsons Jeremy and Brent, and his wife Lorraine (8/22/334/24/06), who was the first female fire fighter in Pennsylvania history. Merkel said his wife was the one who would take their children to fight fires when he was not around. In fact, he responded to some calls when it was just the Merkels on the scene helping! As the oldest active firefighter in the country, Merkel has seen his share of almost unbearable tragedies as well as satisfying victories. Horrifying scenes that would debilitate most people never deterred him from fulfilling his ongoing mission to serve the community. He received many awards over the years, including the prestigious Fireman of the Year Award. Once he received a large monetary prize for his immeasurable contributions to people to need. Instead of keeping the cash for his personal enjoyment, he donated the money so the fire company could purchase a new squad truck. He says he never thinks about awards, rather, he focuses on the job at hand. Brian Kern, Chief of the Friedens Volunteer Fire Fighters has been a friend and colleagues of Merkel’s for several decades. In a recent conversation he enthused”, Jacob taught me many things over the years and he has helped many people. I hope I am as feisty as he is when I reach 82!” Presently, Merkel is recovering at
home from an injury sustained on the farm. This farm bears the dual distinction of rich historical roots and the colorful history of his large family. He purchased the property in 1952 and later learned about its early American significance from Frank Peters. The original stagecoach stopped in front of the property while weary travelers relaxed in the home and the horses rested in the barn. Under Jacob and Lorraine Merkel’s stewardship, the house was a hive of activity with 18 foster children to care for along with their two sons (some of the children they took in serve as fire fighters too!). He joyfully recalls the years spent raising the kids and says it was a very happy time in his life. He still contemplates taking in more children in need. “We all have a reason why we were put on this earth,” he humbly emphasizes“, and my reason is to help people out.” Amazingly, at an age where most men are retired, Jacob Merkel remains focused on fighting fires and helping people. “I don’t stop easy,” he singlemindedly states. The many awards and accolades that fill his home echo the sentiment. He will be 82 in November and sees no end to fire fighting in sight. He also plans to become a centenarian. Everybody I spoke with agrees. Jacob Merkel will be fighting the good fight for years to come and the world is a better place because of him. - Steve Piccione
