From The Editor’s Desk. We all know someone who is struggling with mental illness. It might be the shut-in down the road or a family member who drinks too much. Many of you may not realize this, but May is national Mental Health Awareness month celebrated by Mental Health America since 1949. The organization has used the month to raise awareness of mental wellness as well as a call to action for the 1 in 4 American adults who suffer from a treatable mental health condition. With 25% of adults afflicted there is almost certainly a friend, neighbor or family member that you can help. Every community struggles with mental health problems, and one of the symptoms of the silent epidemic is homelessness. Our perception of the homeless is often skewed. People imagine a drunk lying in the gutter when many of our friends and neighbors are a paycheck away from not having a roof over their heads. Especially with today’s economy and people out of work in the Lehigh Valley, people need help and might not know where to turn. A Federal survey done in 2005 indicated that at least one-third of the homeless population in this country have a

Joe Korba

serious psychiatric disorder that prevents them from getting gainful employment. In a 2007 Housing and Urban development report there were over 671, 888 homeless on any given night in the United States. This is a problem that has an impact on all of our communities. Many homeless people are veterans who are disabled either psychologically or physically. These are people who fought for our way of life but may be slipping through the cracks and being left in the street. This isn't only an urban problem. Images of homeless sleeping on city streets are ubiquitous but that doesn't mean that in our rural towns there isn't a silent scourge. The rural homeless may in fact have it harder, lacking services and shelters. In Carbon County there is an organization founded on the basic principal that the homeless should have a warm place to sleep at night. Aggie Shehadah founded the Christian not-for-profit organization Peaceful Knights in December 2007. Since then it's been helping the homeless in the area get back on their feet by providing temporary shelter and other essentials. For more information on Peaceful Knights or to find out how you can help visit the Peaceful Knight’s website at: http://www.peacefulknights.org/.

Historical Society Mystery Trip

With the help and support of the community and area businesses, the Duane J. Lucien Scholarship Foundation is again able to offer two $1,000 school scholarships, to two Northern Lehigh High students that best exemplify Duane’s character. Since 2000, the foundation awarded eleven scholarships to help students meet the everincreasing costs for college. The foundation is hosting the Third Annual Duane J. Lucien Benefit Festival on May 21, at the covered bridge along the Slate Heritage Trail just off Seventh Street, Slatington.

The Monday, May 9 meeting of the Palmerton Area Historical Society will be a mystery trip. Participants should meet at the parking lot across from Hager Furniture before 6:15 P.M. to share rides to the unknown destination. Members and guests are welcome. This replaces the usual meeting in the Palmerton Library.

Dog Allergies What Are Allergies? Just like people, dogs can show allergic symptoms when their immune systems begin to recognize certain everyday substances—or allergens— as dangerous. Even though these allergens are common in most environments and harmless to most animals, a dog with allergies will have an extreme reaction to them. Allergens can be problematic when inhaled, ingested or contact a dog’s skin. As his body tries to rid itself of these substances, a variety of skin, digestive and respiratory symptoms may appear. What Are the General Symptoms of Allergies in Dogs? • Itchy, red, moist or scabbed skin • Increased scratching • Itchy, runny eyes • Itchy back or base of tail (most commonly flea allergy) • Itchy ears and ear infections • Sneezing • Vomiting • Diarrhea • Snoring caused by an inflamed throat • Paw chewing/swollen paws • Constant licking Allergic dogs may also suffer from secondary

bacterial or yeast skin infections, which may cause hair loss, scabs or crusts on the skin. Which Dogs Are At Risk for Getting Allergies? Any dog can develop allergies at any time during his life, but allergic reactions seem to be especially common in terriers, setters, retrievers, and flat-faced breeds such as pugs, bulldogs and Boston terriers. What Substances Can Dogs Be Allergic To? A few common allergens include: • Tree, grass and weed pollens • Mold spores • Dust and house dust mites • Dander • Feathers • Cigarette smoke • Food ingredients (e.g. beef, chicken, pork, corn, wheat or soy) • Prescription drugs • Fleas and flea-control products (The bite of a single flea can trigger intense itchiness for two to three weeks!) Dog Allergies Continued from Page 21 • Perfumes • Cleaning products • Fabrics • Insecticidal shampoo • Rubber and plastic materials Can Dogs Be Allergic to Food? Yes, but it often takes some detective work to find out what substance is causing the allergic reaction. Dogs with a food allergy will commonly have itchy skin, breathing difficulties or gastrointestinal problems like diarrhea and vomiting, and an elimination diet will most probably be used to determine what food he is allergic to. If your dog is specifically allergic to chicken, for example, you should avoid feeding him any products containing chicken protein or fat. Please note that food allergies may show up in dogs at any age. What Should I Do If I Think My Dog Has Allergies? Visit your veterinarian. After taking a complete

history and conducting a physical examination, he or she may be able to determine the source of your dog’s allergic reaction. If not, your vet will most probably recommend skin or blood tests, or a special elimination diet, to find out what's causing the allergic reaction. How Are Dog Allergies Diagnosed? If your dog’s itchy, red or irritated skin persists beyond initial treatment by a veterinarian, allergy testing, most often performed by a veterinary dermatologist, is likely warranted. The diagnostic test of choice is an intradermal skin test similar to the one performed on humans. The only way to diagnose a food allergy is to feed your dog a prescription or hydrolyzed protein diet exclusively for 12 weeks. The importance of not feeding your dog anything but the diet cannot be emphasized enough—that means no treats, table food or flavored medication. This diet will be free of potential allergy-causing ingredients and will ideally have ingredients your dog has never been exposed to. He’ll remain on the diet until his symptoms go away, at which time you’ll begin to reintroduce old foods to see which ones might be causing the allergic reaction. Please note, many dogs diagnosed with a food allergy will require home-cooked meals— but this must be done in conjunction with your veterinarian, as it requires careful food balancing. How Can Dog Allergies Be Treated? The best way to treat allergies is to remove the offending allergens from the environment. • Prevention is the best treatment for allergies caused by fleas. Start a flea control program for all of your pets before the season starts. Remember, outdoor pets can carry fleas inside to indoor pets. See your veterinarian for advice about the best flea control products for your dog and the environment.

My Mother Kept A Garden My Mother kept a garden, a garden of the heart, She planted all the good things that gave my life it's start. She turned me to the sunshine and encouraged me to dream, Fostering and nurturing the seeds of self-esteem... And when the winds and rain came, she protected me enoughBut not too much because she knew I'd need to stand up strong and tough. Her constant good example always taught me right from wrongMarkers for my pathway that will last a lifetime long. I am my Mother's garden. I am her legacyAnd I hope today she feels the love reflected back from me Author Unknown

Remember When 2003 Blue Mtn. Town & Country Gazette Northampton Area School District was awarded $45,000 from the Pennsylvania Department of Education for improving performance on the 2002 Pennsylvania System of School Assessment test. The funds will be utilized for professional development, instructional supplies, and student-based activities. Restoration work has begun at the Indian Trail Park Trading Post building, located on Route 248. After signing a lease for the building in November of 2002, the Lehigh Township Historical Society started gutting the building, removing more than five tons of trash, including some brush that had been growing up around the building. More gutting work will need to be done before actual reconstruction can begin. The restored Locktender’s House at Lock #23 along the Lehigh Canal in Walnutport, will again be open for guided tours each Sunday. Individuals and groups are encouraged to stop in to view the displays of canal artifacts and local history. Meals on Wheels of Northampton County/Bethlehem Area had a 30th Anniversary year that included some very notable milestones. Among these milestones were recognition as the only Nationally Certified Nutrition Site in Pennsylvania, the welcoming of 100 new clients and dozens of volunteers. The Lehigh Township Historical Museum is proud to announce the May 25 opening of the Lehigh Township Museum. The public is invited to visit St. Paul’s School House on Almond Road, the one-room Indianland schoolhouse, as it is being used as the temporary museum for the society. The museum will feature displays on the history of the villages in the township as well as displays on the two area parks, Indian Trail Park and Edgemont Park, the schools, and the industries in the township.

A Touch of Dutch Continued from Page 33 end of your arm. Sometimes one pays most for the things one gets for nothing. Whenever you get into deep water it is wise to keep your mouth shut. No man ever told a woman she talks too much when she was telling him how wonderful he is. Why look for trouble if you don’t want it? Worry is like a rocking chair; it gives you something to do but gets you nowhere. The person who remembers what he was taught at his mother’s knee may have been bent over it.

Happy Birthday!

Spread The Good Word The Leader Of The Parade Pastor Brian L. Haas Christ UCC Walnutport, PA bhaas61@gmail.com by © Brian L. Haas 2011

BLUE MOUNTAIN TOWN & COUNTRY GAZETTE | May 5, 2011

This time of year, as in every small town, When the parade was coming we’d all gather ‘round. And leading our parade was the flag held high Carried by a man who looked ready die. A scruffy old man we just called “Old Joe” Who was laughed at and mocked by the young and the old. “Hey Joe, where ya going?” the crowd smugly jeered But Old Joe just smiled like a drunk with his beer. We kids would laugh too, tossing tomatoes and sticks While others would sneer or play dirty tricks. I heard one shout, “Get that nut off the street!” But Joe kept a-marching without missing a beat. For fifty some years he faithful came With a bent-over back and a leg that was lame. But when he had died I asked all around, “Who was that old man mocked by our town?” No one I asked seemed to know or to care, Even his tombstone was unusually bare. But beside his grave clutching a rose, His wife shared this story with a pride in her voice: “He was in the Pacific on some tiny island At the crack of dawn when his platoon had landed That machine gun bullets from high on a ledge Tore through the sand till one caught Joe’s leg. His buddy beside him was shot through the lung, But with his torn-up leg Joe carried him on. A rifle for a crutch, his friend on his back Joe lugged him onward midst the explosive attack. When he got him to safety, he quickly turned back To the bloody red beach retracing his tracks. Thirteen men were saved that day By my Joe who lies in the clay here today. Yet when Joe would march in our parade each year That pain in his leg would just disappear. ‘Though the attacks from the crowds were harsher than guns My Joe would march on despite the laughs and the puns. With devotion he carried that flag in the air In honor of his men ~ all those years he still cared. Those thirteen stripes were the men he had saved Holding them up like he did on that day. And one thing more before you must go, There’s something my heart surely does know, He’ll be leading parades pass the heavenly throne With his men held high till they’re all safely home.”

LT Historical Centre Opens May 15 for 10th Anniversary! The Historical Centre, located along Rte. 248, at Indian Trail Park, Pennsville, will be open for the 2011 season, starting May 15 and May 29, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Each month thereafter, up until October 9, there will be an Open House on the second and fourth Sundays of each month, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The historical centre is also open by appointment. Since this year is the society's tenth anniversary year, a keepsake card will be given to visitors as they visit, a different one each month visit each month and collect the whole set! The Historical Society has displays relating to all aspects of life in the township, including farming, industry, recreation, etc. There are many albums with photos and articles about towns, schools and residents of the township and surrounding communities. A new self-guided tour booklet is available to help you as you browse through the centre and it lists highlights of each of the fourteen displays. There are also numerous items available for purchase if you are interested in a unique gift for someone or for yourself: books, ornaments, pottery pitchers, and more. See any member if interested. Brand new this spring is the mural

that is the background for the knitting machine from the Penn Keystone Mill in Walnutport. This floor to ceiling, black and white mural is a photo of the machines and the workers in the mill, taken in 1951. At one time, there were countless mills in the area. Workers' names are listed near the mural - you might want to check if you know anyone on the picture. You won't want to miss this unique textile display! The society has received many donated items throughout the year and these items have been added to the exhibits. An Indian milling stone was recently donated to the society and is a new item in the Native American display. All of the school memorabilia has been removed from the building and is now housed in St. Paul's Schoolhouse on Almond Road. If anyone is interested in a schoolhouse tour, please contact a member of the historical society. Please visit the historical centre during one of our Open House dates! You will learn more about Lehigh Township and how people lived years ago. Be proud of the history and heritage of Lehigh Township! For more information, you may call 610-767-5989.

Home Cooling Q & A The Town & Country Gazette consults experts about keeping your home cool this summer. Why does my air conditioner have an odor? The answer is usually a blocked drain hose, which can cause mold build up with an accompanying odor. You can either unplug and clear the drain hose or replace it entirely. How often should you change the filter on your air conditioner? It depends on where you live, air pollution levels

and if you smoke or have pets. The filter should be inspected at least once a month. If you use your air conditioner regularly you should change the filter a minimum of once a year. A filter change is only a few dollars and is one of the most important things you can do to increase the life of your air conditioning unit. A dirty filter makes your blower motor work harder among other problems that will cost hundreds of dollars to remedy. What part of your house or apartment is the most efficient place to install a window unit air conditioner? The unit should be installed on the shadiest side of the house as well as on the second floor if being used to cool the entire house. It’s most efficient to have a unit on each floor. What is the best kind of roofing to keep your home cool in hot weather?

Northampton High School Students Prepare for Medical Careers Eight Northampton Area High School Seniors are attending the Academy of Medical Sciences course at Bethlehem Area Vocational Technical School (BAVTS). The Academy of Medical Sciences course is designed for college-bound Seniors who plan to pursue a medical. Northampton is one of five schools that participate locally. During the second semester, students participated in real-world medical career exploration by doing clinical rotations in 10 – 12 different departments at Muhlenberg Hospital, under the supervision of hospital staff. Students were assigned to various departments within the hospital such as Surgery, Respiratory Therapy, Pharmacy, Emergency Department, Short Procedure Unit, Imaging, Dental Surgery, various Laboratories, Dietary, and other departments depending on student interest. Instructor for the Academy of Medical Sciences course is Mrs. Josefa Husovsky. Mrs. Husovsky explained that “Students must maintain a high level of academic achievement, and must pass a stringent clearance process before they are allowed to participate in the hospital rotations. We feel we maintain very high standards and expectations

for the students. In return, the students receive valuable experience which will guide them in choosing a medical career.” High School Seniors interested in the Academy of Medical Sciences course, or other Academy courses offered by BAVTS, should contact their Guidance Counselor.

Home Cooling Q & A Continued from Page 46 Light colored roofing is always a good solution, but good attic ventilation is very important in keeping your home cool. Is using a ceiling fan at the same time as AC a waste of energy? Using a ceiling fan may actually save you some money on your electric bill. They use very little electricity and help to circulate the cool air from your air conditioner and make your home feel cooler. A ceiling fan may allow you to keep the AC thermostat at a higher setting, saving money. Some experts say that running the fan in conjunction with AC can save up to 15% on your energy bill. What are some ways to reduce the amount of electricity an air conditioner uses? The U.S. Department of Energy offers these tips: Set your thermostat at 78째F or higher. Each degree setting below 78째F will increase your energy consumption by approximately 8%. Use bath and kitchen fans sparingly when the air conditioner is operating. Check and clean both indoor and outdoor coils periodically. Dirt build-up on the indoor coil is the single most common cause of poor efficiency. Check the refrigerant charge. You may need a service contractor to check the fluid and adjust it appropriately. Shade east and west windows. When possible, delay heat-generating activities, such as dishwashing, until the evening on hot days. Keep the house closed tight during the day. Don't let in unwanted heat and humidity. If practical, ventilate at night either naturally or with fans. Try not to use a dehumidifier at the same time your air conditioner is operating. The dehumidifier will increase the cooling load and force the air conditioner to work harder.

Cinco de Mayo! Contrary to popular belief Cinco de Mayo (May 5th), a celebration of Mexican heritage, is not Mexico's Independence Day. It's actually a celebration of the Mexican Army's unlikely victory over French forces on May 5, 1862. Cinco de Mayo is mostly celebrated in the United States, being that the battle was fought during the American Civil War. It started spontaneously by Mexicans wanting to honor their ancestors’ devotion to freedom and democracy. By Joe Korba

Imagine a sports league for children that doesn’t have parents driving all over creation multiple nights of the week, where children have equal playing time and promotes positive self-esteem, confidence and good sportsmanship! Program features a onehour practice weekly and a one-hour game on Saturdays. Registration deadline is July 31. Call the church office (610 767-1239) or log onto www. bethanywes.org/Upward Sports.
