East Allen Township Unveils 2021 road Maintenance program By KERI LINDENMUTH During the East Allen Township Board of Supervisors meeting on Wednesday, April 14, township manager Brent Green unveiled the township’s 2021 road maintenance program. Six township roads are slated to be chip sealed, with an additional seven roads listed as alternates should time and budget allow. Chip sealing is an affordable way to repair and maintain roads. The first roads to receive maintenance will be Prospect Drive, Sylvan Drive, Laurel Court, Douglas Lane, Mohican Road, and Circle Drive, in that order. The alternate roads proposed are Penny Drive, Beatrice Lane, Pond View Terrace, Lois Lane, Louise Lane, Carol Lane, and Shady Lane. However, the largest road maintenance projects will take place on Mountain View Drive and Mountain View Circle. These

roads will receive a double chip seal and fog seal. Green added that these roads have “completely deteriorated” and this plan is the only other option other than a total restoration. The total road maintenance budget for the year is $400,000, something Green said they are working hard to remain “tight to.” In other news, PennDOT’s replacement plans for Old Carriage Road Bridge are available online for comment at http://www. centuryeng.com/carriage-roadbridge until April 30. PennDOT is aiming to begin construction in 2023. Township engineer James Milot had one concern regarding the plans, which he voiced to supervisors. He said the nine-foot lanes with two-foot shoulders are “very tight.” Supervisors asked Milot to submit a request to PennDOT,

asking that they justify this decision and confirm that the lanes meet standard bridge width. Finally, Green outlined the multiple projects the township is working on using funding from the CARES Act. A new website is launching by the end of the month, complete with emergency notification software and a reverse 911 system that can alert residents in case of an emergency. Software is also being installed that will allow residents and organizations to reserve park pavilions online and submit their payments through the website. Finally, virtual streaming technology has been added to the municipal building’s meeting room so that supervisors can return to in-person meetings, but also broadcast the public meetings online. The next Board of Supervisors meeting will be held on Thursday, April 22 at 7 p.m. via Zoom.

By KERI LINDENMUTH During their meeting on Tuesday, April 13, the Allen Township Board of Supervisors discussed the alternatives they would like to see to PennDOT’s suggested Howertown Bridge detour. The detour that PennDOT engineers recommended last month would close the northbound lane on Howertown Road and detour vehicles five miles around the construction site. Supervisors were unhappy with this detour, citing safety concerns and a lack of access for first responders. Later this month, supervisors will have a meeting with PennDOT to discuss other options. “[We need to] discuss what we want to see as options for detours,”

township manager Ilene Eckhart told supervisors on April 13. “So we have a consolidated approach with these people...I fear if we do not have a uniform front on this... they are going to say [we] do not know what [we] want anyway.” Supervisor Dale Hassler, who is also the township’s fire chief, said he would like to see the bridge leave one lane open and use a traffic signal to allow emergency services and firefighters to travel north toward the township’s fire station and more rural population. He also added that another option could include building a new bridge adjacent to the current bridge and only removing the current bridge when the new bridge is complete. “We are more than happy to

go around [for training] but in a time of emergency, when minutes count...that is what I am looking at,” he said, adding that the convenience of the detour is less important than the safety it can provide to the township. “PennDOT is not looking out for the people of this township,” he said. “PennDOT is looking out for PennDOT.” Continued on page 3

For our Coplay, Whitehall and Catasauqua readers: On a sunny fall afternoon, the Konkrete Kids defeated the Coplay Wildcats in a hard-fought fourth-quarter win 7 to 6. They defeated a scrappy Whitehall team 34-0. Northampton lost the big one in the last game of the season, played at Allentown High School stadium. Our neighbors, the Catasauqua Rough Riders, beat the Konkrete Kids before one of the largest crowds ever to witness the traditional Turkey Day classic. The score was Catasauqua 19, Northampton 0. Mr. Al Rundle was the Konkrete Kids coach. He coached football, basketball and baseball. In the yearbook, Albert Erdosy is described as a gentleman, sincere and friendly. from Japan visited Northampton High School. The professor said, “My visit to your school in the fall of 1929 being the very first one that I had paid to any school in America has left a deep impression upon me that will remain with me for life. I am greatly interested to learn from your letter that your senior class has chosen Japanese literature as a theme for the 1931 yearbook, and we deem it a high honor.” Mr. Erdosy would graduate from Muhlenberg College and be hired as a teacher, assistant football coach and later head coach at Northampton High School. Al would start coaching under Elwood “Woody” Ludwig, a University of Pennsylvania graduate who would coach Northampton’s most famous football team, the 1937 “Wonder Team.” One of Al’s longtime assistants was another football great, Mr. Pete Schneider, who started on the “Wonder Team” and played for Muhlenberg College and the Bethlehem Bulldogs. Our next column will display Al’s art talent.

Old Bath The Salk Vaccine

By Charles McIlhaney Jr.

Poliomyelitis, or Polio, was formerly known as Infantile Paralysis. It is a viral disease that has plagued mankind for centuries, reaching epic proportions in this country in the early 1950s. While not as decimating as the COVID-19 virus we are currently battling, it had a chilling propensity to attack young children much more so than adults. Some died, but many more were left with varying degrees of paralysis, some for their life-

times. Those with breathing muscles attacked had no recourse than to lie on their backs in a cylindrical chamber called an “iron lung” to support breathing with only their heads exposed. Then in April of 1955, the Salk vaccine was tested and approved safe for use. Much like today, an ambitious campaign was organized to get children and adults immunized as quickly as possible. I was an elementary student at Bath Public School when a motorcade of volunteer drivers, many of them mothers of the school children, including my own, lined Penn Street. Each car was boarded by as many children as possible and we were transported to a location to get the vaccine. Though rare, nationwide there were a few cases of children who contracted Polio from the vaccine itself. After our inoculation, we needed to wait a specified number of days, which we endured with some apprehension, before we were assured of not being afflicted. After that, it was as though a sinister cloud shadowing our wellbeing had dissipated. Move over Davy Crockett, our newfound hero was Dr. Jonas Salk.

Stories From My Heart by Cynthia Jean DeLuca

And the Angels Whispered

In my journey over the years, I have met several men, women and children who feel that they are not worthy of being loved. For some reason, they feel that they cannot live up to anyone’s expectations, no matter how hard they try. Sometimes they even give up. Now, I do not know how this feeling was generated in their hearts; however, I want them to understand that they are important and not alone.

Sometimes people think that their imperfections contribute to their unworthiness. On the contrary, our imperfections help to create our uniqueness as individuals. They help us be who we were created to be. When we help others, we are helping ourselves. When we touch someone’s heart with a kind deed, by visiting or by just brightening that person’s day, love scatters and lands on two hearts. You deserve love and are worthy of being loved just because of your beautiful self. I like to think that you will find your worthiness on the path of life when you believe in yourself and are willing to take a chance. Have you ever taken a walk on a breezy day when the wind whispered through the trees? The sound of the wind whirling up, down, and around the branches reminds me of a host of angels assuring, encouraging and whispering words of faith, hope, grace, mercy, forgiveness, compassion, strength, and love. I remember that a while ago, as I was walking down a country road, I found myself surrounded by wheat fields. The sound of the wheat being pushed from side to side reminded me of a thousand angels whispering, sharing and praying. I remember that the sound was soothing to my soul. I believe that God created whispers to remind us that he is always in control. I think he sends his messengers to show us how much we are loved and that we always will be loved. I believe that he wants us to trust in him and never give up hope. Remember to love yourself and believe that you are worthy. Because you are. Listen to the whispers on a windy day, whether they come from the wheat swaying or branches dancing. I think the sound of the wind will stir up a little something in your soul.

NORTHAMPTON AREA Northampton Borough Council Continues discussion on Stormwater management fees By CHRISTINA SANTO The Northampton Borough Council met on Thursday, April 15 to continue discussing the potential of creating a stormwater management fee program and approve requests. During the March 18 council meeting, councilman Robert McHale presented council with some preliminary information on the creation of a stormwater management fee program. The

stormwater fee would be based on the amount of impervious land on a property; one way to calculate it would be to take the amount of revenue needed and divide it by the amount of impervious land in the borough. All properties would have to pay the stormwater fee, even if they are tax-exempt. In most cases, borough residents would be saving money compared to increasing the budget.

If your child is identified by the District as possibly in need of such services, you will be notified of applicable procedures. If you believe that your school age child may be in need of gifted services, the District offers screening and evaluation to assess the needs of your child. The assessment is offered at no cost to you. District residents may request screening and evaluation at any time, whether or not your child is enrolled in the District’s public school program. Requests for evaluation and screening should be made in writing to your child’s Northampton Area School District principal or the Director of Curriculum and Instruction. In compliance with state law, the Northampton Area School District will provide gifted education for each gifted student that is based on the unique needs of the student, not solely on the student’s classification. The District will provide gifted education for gifted students which enables them to participate in acceleration or enrichment programs, or both, as appropriate, and to receive services according to their intellectual and academic abilities and needs. All information gathered about your child is subject to the confidentiality provisions contained in federal and state law. Most council members seemed in agreement to move forward in the research and development process. They approved a motion to add an agenda item to the next meeting for the creation of a subcommittee that would do more in-depth research to make a rough outline of the potential project and a presentation for the public; once there is sufficient research done, a public hearing will be held to allow borough residents to express their opinions. In other news, council approved many requests from different organizations. One of these requests was from the Northampton Memorial Community Center. The community center’s financial secretary was present at the meeting to request a waiver of their rent for 2020 and 2021 until they are fully operational again. The center functions mainly as a bingo facility and banquet hall, and has been completely shut down since the start of the pandemic last year. In addition, the community center has provided the borough money over the years for recreation. Council approved their request and discussed the potential of using some of the funds from American Rescue Plan Act to help the community center. The First Baptist Church of Allenton will be using two of the pavilions at the Municipal Park on September 12 for their Rally Days event. Council also approved a request from South Whitehall Township to use the portable trailer on three dates: June 11, June 25, and July 23; they will take care of delivery and set-up for each occasion. Council also approved a request from Becky’s Drive-In to use the trailer on October 3 for their annual “Dream Come True” event. Borough Manager LeRoy Brobst provided an update on the lifeguard situation: at the time of the meeting, they had ten applicants and are still accepting more applications. Council also addressed the road conditions on Main Street from UGI’s projects. The public works crew is filling in some of the holes created, but the responsibility should fall on UGI to fix the situation. Councilman Thomas Gehringer explained that UGI outsources road work to Great Western and is most likely waiting for the entire project to be completed before that would happen. The next Northampton Borough Council meeting will be held on Thursday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the municipal building.
