By KERI LINDENMUTH With family rides, funnel cake, and fireworks, a summer tradition was in full swing in the Borough of Bath despite the rainy weather. Bath Community Days ran from July 21 to July 28 at Carl L. Rehrig Park. It kicked off with the Bikers Remembering Bikers event at Bath Social Hall and finished with Saturdaynight fireworks. Besides funnel cake from Fancy Funnels, a pig roast, and food served up by the Bath Volunteer Fire Department, there was no shortage of entertainment, with bands perform-
ing every day of the week. Alex Allegra, Time Why?s, Sunshine Symphony, Desire, and Forty Grand all took to the stage. There were also plenty of events for every member of the family. Although Kid’s Night was cancelled, the annual Bath 5K took off on the festival’s final day. Darts and basketball were just some of the carnival games to choose from, along with rides like the giant slide and flying airplanes. Fair-goers could even try their luck at bingo or the Bath Lions candy wheel. (Additional pic on Page 16).

Bob Kucsan Resigns As Lower Nazareth Supervisor by HOME NEWS STAFF Lower Nazareth Township Supervisor Robert Kucsan announced at the monthly meeting of the Board of Supervisors on Wednesday, July 25 that it was his last meeting. He resigned, effective July 31, after 18 years of serving the community on the board. “It’s hard, but I want to thank everybody,” he said. “I enjoyed everything and everyone, but it’s time to move on.” Solicitor Gary Asteak told him, “You’ve been the conscience of the community and the board.” He noted that he has worked beside Kucsan for many years and feels he is a role model. Kucsan was first named a supervisor in 1996 and served

through December 1999. He took office again in 2004 and continued to the present day. He is an active member of the Hecktown – Lower Nazareth Lions Club and was elected District 14-K Governor in the Lions year 2000-2001. Lower Nazareth’s supervisors have 30 days to appoint a replacement, who would serve throughout this year and to the end of 2019, said chairman James Pennington. They have a list of six extra persons who applied for a vacant seat when Supervisor LeRoy Bickert passed away in April. That was filled by Robert Hoyer, who praised Kucsan for being community-oriented. Other board members, the township manager, and people attending the meeting also wished him well, thanking Kucsan for his service. He has also served on the Colonial Regional Police Commission, the library committee, and other boards.

5 lessons from Entrepreneurs Are you successful or do you want to be successful? Do you admire other entrepreneurs who appear to be successful? Then stop right now and read about the success of five famous entrepreneurs. I’ve always believed if something is working for someone who exemplifies success and is willing to share what he or she did to achieve that level of success, why not try it? Have an open mind and check out these success stories.
Mark Cuban - Owner of the Dallas Mavericks and star of Shark Tank:
The best advice he ever got was: "Do the work. Out-work. Out-think. Out-sell your expectations. There are no shortcuts." The advice came from his father, who did upholstery on cars, when Cuban was in high school.
Panera Bread founder and CEO Ron Shaich:
Competitive advantage is everything. "Losing competitive advantage is the greatest risk in business." If you don't have a reason for people to walk past your competitors and come to your business, he says, then you don't exist. "If you can do something to get somebody excited -- not everybody -- but if you can be the best for somebody, then you can win." Shaich says. "What it's all about is figuring out what you can do for somebody that nobody else can do better.”
Real estate mogul and star of Shark Tank - Barbara Corcoran:
Her best advice was an insult. Call it reverse psychology, but it was an insult that motivated Corcoran to succeed. "It's kind of weird. The best advice was the worst advice. It was from my boyfriend and partner in my first business when he told me I would never succeed without him. I was injured no doubt. But thank God he insulted me because I would not have built a big business without that. It kept me trying everything because I couldn't give him the satisfaction of seeing me fail. So the best advice was an insult.”

fore I was a syndicated cartoonist," Adams tells Business Insider. "I asked advice of a professional cartoonist, Jack Cassady, who had a TV show called 'Funny Business' years ago on PBS. I wrote to him, and he gave me this advice: 'It's a competitive business, but don't give up.’"
"It took me a long time to understand it, but [the advice was] to ask for help and that I don't know it all. People love to help. I don't have to be insecure and know it all." He got this insight at Landmark Forum, a weekend workshop he attended in 1991. Learning how to trust others and share control turned out to be critical to the success of Lululemon, since in the beginning he was simultaneously running it and another company. Out-work, out-think, out-sell your own expectations. Keep your competitive advantage. When someone tells you that you can’t be successful - work harder and go get ‘um. Don’t give up. Ask for help when you don’t know something. Are you successful or are you climbing the ladder to success? If so, you may want to wrap your arms around these five brilliant lessons and, most importantly, start today.

Natural perspectives For the health-minded individual
Thoughts On Non-Responsive Depression I have started and stopped this article many times. Frankly, I do not know where to begin nor end this very sensitive topic. Clearly I understand that no quick discussion on depression followed by a summary of sorts to eat more broccoli and do yoga will enlighten many. What should get you wondering is my next statement, that being, if nothing else is helping your depression then consider improving thyroid hormone levels. Do I have your attention? I have been studying the thyroid with a certain fervor these last many years and for good reason. That being, thyroid dysfunction issues are becoming widespread. Who doesn’t have a thyroid issue these days? If you think you don’t then maybe you may want to think again. I thought I didn’t but lab tests revealed that I did and do. Please know that I have virtually no standard symptoms of thyroid disease. Maybe you don’t either. Yet, unknown to me, I have Hashimoto’s disorder, which is an autoimmune condition whereby my body is attacking and destroying my thyroid follicular cells slowly and surely. At some point, symptoms may start. I am doing my absolute best to keep it all at bay. Now you may be asking what this has to do with depression. To the point, the thyroid “cross talks” with other systems of the body. There is thyroid-endocrine cross talk (of course), a thyroidimmune cross talk, a thyroid-gut crosstalk, and also the thyroidbrain cross talk, which is the basis for this article. I need to use the “what if ” approach here. What if your depression is directly linked to an abnormally functioning thyroid or for that matter a borderline abnormal functioning thyroid? What if you also have an auto immune disorder of your thyroid that you do not even know exists? If it did exist, would your doctor perceive a dysfunction of the

and really see if your thyroid is playing a role in the problem. My best to you. "Natural Perspectives" is a health commentary only and does not claim to diagnose and/ or make treatment recommendations. Always seek the advice of your health care professional.
Looking Back Continued from page 1
Helping for 20 years thyroid-brain cross talk? A lot to take in here. From what I have come across, even if blood tests reveal normal thyroid levels, adding in T3 (otherwise known as triiodothyronine) may improve depression that is unresponsive to other means. Your medical doctor can prescribe of course. Cytomel is the synthetic drug widely used. Please understand that I want all of us to be as natural as able yet when push comes to shove, let’s deal with major depression issues as soon as possible. If you are dealing with sustained depression on any level, especially if on serotonin uptake inhibitor medication and nothing appears to be helping, I implore you to take what I am saying to heart and speak with your medical doctor. Maybe your doctor would be willing to prescribe Armour Thyroid, the natural T3 and T4 glandular combination. While I am not sure Synthroid, which is purely T4, would make as much impact, it cannot hurt to have more T4 around so the body has more to convert to T3. If I thought a depression was linked to thyroid dysregulation I would also consider tyrosine and selenium supplements. Maybe just a bit of iodine as well. Each person is different so you need to be evaluated thoroughly. My hope is that this week’s discussion can help someone out there who is suffering with depression. Speak with your doctor. Run more than the basics tests
offices opened it took on the appearance of a supermarket.” The new stamp showed a three-cent increase. People actually lined up when the Northampton Post Office opened. Be assured this writer was not in the line. The postmaster was a wellknown gentleman, Mr. Charles Kutzer. The post office was filled with customers until the 5 p.m. closing. Many customers purchased three-cent stamps to add to the 34-cent stamps they had on hand. The post office had received a shipment of 50,000 three-cent stamps, 35,000 were sold during the Monday opening. The postmaster quickly ordered another shipment fearing he would not have enough stamps for the week. The 700 coils of stamps were down to 200 by Tuesday morning. The two clerks at the windows experienced one of the busiest days in years so he rotated clerks to provide breaks for employees. They all were feeling pressure of the day. You can expect some people were impatient and became frustrated. I guess all of us have experienced frustrating waiting in long lines which has become more common in some of our retail establishments. Parking is also limited around the post office. Hope no one was issued a parking ticket. There was relief when the day ended in July of 2002 at many post offices. Things sure have changed in this computer age. I hope you have your supply of Forever stamps, I know I do.

GAB OVER by Pete THE FENCE G. Ossip From one wet spell to another. Nothing like dark, wet days to dampen your spirits. So that’s how we’re supposed to roll from July into August. It can get kinda depressing. . . . Makes me feel as down in the dumps as the Phillies felt after losing three games to the Cincinnati Reds, a last place team. No hitting at all hardly. Then they faced a terrific opponent like the Boston Red Sox, Margie Rehrig’s favorite team. . . .I’m glad Jim Pasquariello had such a successful event with the motoryclists as they remembered past mates and raised some good money for Dream Come True Blue Ridge Chapter. They’ve been doing it for more than a dozen years, and should keep it up for such a fine cause as helping ill children. . . .The fellowship hall up in Salem UCC Church is gonna look nice this
weekend with the Moorestown Garden Club flower show. The gals (and a couple guys) always do a good job of raising plants that turn out so pretty, and they’ve been doing it for 65 years. Their theme this year is about flowers around the world. The club used to be over in what was the Star Grange hall, but that’s now an apartment building. . . .Lehigh Township Lions Club members had a good time over the weekend with the truck and tractor pulls at Lorah’s Farm near Berlinsville. . . . Tree crews had their big equipment out along Race Street past Mills Street on Monday trimming down some of those huge trees. Long ago, that’s where the Pike family grew up. . . . Spuds & Suds will be held later this month, most of it over on W. Northampton Street, where all those potholes have made for a real bumpy ride. But there’s no more than patches this year, so we’ll just hafta go with the flow. . . .Time for the Phillies game to come on, so I need to do some rooting for our favorite team. Enjoy your vacations, gang

of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bath, spoke next. He shared an anecdote of first moving to the town and his wife being gifted a rose by then-owner Robert Hayes. “He knew it was her birthday because it was his birthday too,” Wetzel said of the gesture, mentioning that Hayes Flowers has always cared about its customers and com-

munity. He too congratulated the business and its owner before passing the reins to HayesReph for the ribbon cutting. Thanking the crowd for their support throughout the years, Hayes-Reph explained that it was not just an anniversary for Hayes Flowers, but for herself as well. Having bought the business from her parents in 1998, this marked her twentieth year as owner. With cheers, Hayes-Reph cut the ribbon, officially marking the anniversary. Over light refreshments and live music provided by Johnny Tamburro on guitar, HayesReph chatted with guests and told many the history of the flower shop over the past 50 years. Begun by Robert Hayes in 1968, the flower shop was originally located on Main Street in Freemansburg, PA, before moving to Bath in 1973. According to Hayes’s daughter and current owner HayesReph, he was an extremely artistic man who was studying to become an art teacher prior to the Korean War. After, Hayes found work at the Bethlehem Steel and started floral design as a weekend hobby. Beginning to sell his creations at farmers markets when visiting his wife Eleanor’s family in Tamaqua, Hayes saw a business opportunity. Beginning as self-taught florists, the Hayes’s outgrew their garage and then Freemansburg
shop to permanently move to the current location at 251 E. Main St. in Bath. Hayes-Reph grew up in the shop where she learned to design, eventually taking over the business herself. Over the past 50 years very little has changed, as the staff ’s commitment to their customers has remained at their core throughout. “We thank our staff,” HayesReph said. “Over the years we’ve had wonderful staff that helped us to be where we are.
I hope we give our customers good quality, good service. We thank all our customers over the years for their continued support.”

By ANDY WEAVER The Nazareth Junior Legion Baseball Team made the Junior Legion Regionals this past week, which were held up in Berwick. On July 23 they played Yardley in the morning and lost 8-0, then played Greater Pittson and won 4-0, and then on July 24 they played Shillington and won that game 3-0 to advance to the Semifinals on July 25 where they came
against Yardley once again and unfortunately came up short by a score of 10-0 to see their season come to a close. Andy’s Corner would like to say congrats to all the athletes who played sports the entire summer. For up to the minute news check out my website at https:// nazarethsports.wordpress.com/.

The Controller
A young pilot had just passed the point of no return when the weather changed for the worse. Visibility dropped to a matter of feet as fog descended to the earth. Putting total trust in the cockpit instruments was a new experience to him, for the ink was still wet on the certificate verifying that he was qualified for instrument flying. The landing worried him the most. His destination was a crowded metropolitan airport he wasn’t familiar with. He was now thankful that his instructor had practically forced him to memorize the rule book. “I’m going to put you on a holding pattern,” the air traffic controller radioed. The pilot knew that his safe landing was in the hands of this person. He had to draw upon his previous instructions and training, and trust the voice of an air traffic controller he couldn’t see. Aware that this was no time for pride, he informed the controller, “This is not a seasoned pro up here. I would appreciate any help you could give me.” “You’ve got it!” he heard back. For the next 45 minutes, the controller gently guided the pilot through the blinding fog. As course and altitude corrections came periodically, the young pilot realized the controller was guiding him around obstacles and away from potential collisions. With the words of the rule book firmly placed in his mind, and with the gentle voice of the controller, he landed safely at last. The Holy Spirit guides us through the maze of life much like that air traffic controller. The controller assumed that the young pilot understood the instructions of the flight manual. His guidance was based on that. Such is the case with the Holy Spirit: He can guide us if we have a knowledge of God’s Word and His will established in our minds. --Adapted
