Northampton announces Cancellation of Street Fair and Annual Jack Frost Parade
By KERI LINDENMUTH The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the cancellation of two more beloved community events. During the August 20 Northampton Borough Coun-
cil meeting, it was announced that both the Uptown Street Fair slated for September and the Jack Frost Parade scheduled for October have been canceled in an effort to keep residents safe.
Loving Your Littles In The Lehigh Valley Your Tips & Trips Parenting Guide
By Erin Ferguson
School or No School, That is the Question While the Lehigh Valley gears up for the 2020 school season to start, many parents are left with questions, concerns, and the fear of not knowing what the right decision is...Do we send our kids to school or do we keep them home? Do we have the option and can we make it work? Nazareth and Northampton school districts have decided on a hybrid plan for the return of school in the fall. Each schools plan is extremely fluid and can be changed at any time. Both school
districts are offering free online remote school options as well. As parents, we, of course, have been given many recommendations, have received many opinions from doctors and teachers, friends and definitely from family, and everyone is an expert, but not. All of this makes the decision to send our kids back to school very challenging. Here are some facts about COVID-19 regarding children that Continued on page 6

The decision to cancel the street fair was made by the Northampton Area Chamber of Commerce. However, the event is rescheduled for May 22, 2021. The Jack Frost Parade, held by the Northampton Exchange Club, has been a borough tradition for over 70 years. It celebrates fall and draws hundreds along its route. In light of these announcements, Councilman Tony Pristash said he hopes the borough can “find a way” to keep Trick-orTreat and the annual tree lighting on the calendar. In other news, code enforcement officer Keith Knoblach said he is catching up on rental inspections that were put on hold during the pandemic. Despite the pause, Knoblach announced a 95.1 percent compliance rate. Only 25 rental parcels have not been registered. Owners have until the end of August to do so before they are taken to court. Even when the legal system gets involved, Knoblach said there are still some landlords who do not cooperate. “Unfortunately, there are [property owners] even the magistrate cannot get a hold of.” Continued on page 5

Weaversville Part 14 of 14
We conclude our long visit to Weaversville by looking at a few more photographs. Remember an era when lodges and fraternal societies were active
organizations? Weaversville had a lodge building, which hosted both men’s and women’s patriotic organizations. The lodge dated back to Weaversville’s early history. The building was later converted into Continued on page 3

Contact tracing scams COVID The Coronavirus has created a perfect storm for scammers. One unique scam to arise this summer is scammers posing as contact tracers working for state health departments. Contact tracing is an important part of efforts to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Approaches
to contact tracing will vary by state; but know in all states, legitimate tracers will never ask for money, bank account information, Social Security Numbers, credit card numbers, or medical insurance information. You may receive a text from a contact tracer to inform you they will be in contact by phone. If a text like this tells you to click a link, it’s a scam. Clicking will download software on your device to access personal and financial information. When in doubt, don’t

act before contacting your state health department to find out what process they are using. Tech support - COVID It’s back to school season in the time of coronavirus, and for many families it means more working from home and attending school from home. Scammers will take advantage of this to scare people into thinking their device has been attacked by malicious software – a nightmare for workers and students alike. The “tech support” scam typically involves a phone call with someone claiming to be with Microsoft, Dell, or another wellknown tech company, claiming they have identified a virus on your computer. Or, you will see a pop up message on your computer with a phone number to call right away to deal with a virus. In both scenarios, the scammer’s goal is to get you to allow them to access your computer remotely in an effort to steal financial and personal information. If tech support calls, it’s a scam. If you get the popup and your computer freezes, simply shut down and restart your computer and it should go away. Be a fraud fighter. If you can spot a scam, you can stop a scam. Visit the AARP Fraud Watch Network at www.aarp.org/fraudwatchnetwork or call the AARP Fraud Watch Helpline at 1-877908-3360 and speak to trained staff or volunteers for help with a fraud encounter.

a bakery and residence. As youth on the Smith farm, we would visit the Weaversville Hotel to purchase cold beer and soda to satisfy our thirst during the hot summer harvest. The hotel would later be expanded under the ownership of Woody Kleppinger. Recently, the landmark structure was offered for sale at public auction. One of the beautiful homes in Weaversville is the Kerr-Brown house. The property was purchased in 1750 by James Kerr,
who constructed the ScotchIrish stone house. The Kerrs were one of the early German settlers in the area. For years, the structure was owned by the state of Pennsylvania and was the home of farm superintendent Charles Miller and family until the state sold all their farms in Allen and East Allen townships. The farm, in recent years, was sold to David Jaindl, who has preserved the historic structure. See you in two weeks. After this series, Mr. Oberly is in need of a new camera.
Troop M reminds Public of school Bus safety on the Roadway
Submitted by NATHAN BRANOSKY With schools opening throughout the region, the Pennsylvania State Police Troop M would like to remind the public that troopers will be vigilant for any school bus
violations that occur in the area. The safety of children at school bus stops, walking to school or traveling on a school bus is a responsibility all motorists must make a priority. Drivers must adhere to: Yellow flashing lights on the bus indicate the bus is getting ready to stop and load or unload. Slow down and get ready to stop. Red flashing lights and a stop signal arm indicate that the bus has stopped and that children are getting on or off. You must stop your vehicle at least 10 feet before reaching the school bus. You may not proceed until the flashing red signal lights are no longer activated. Continued on page 8

Gab Over by Pete The Fence G. Ossip Hi gang, each week we’re creeping closer to fall weather and the sun is setting awfully quick each day. The little heat spell we got this week may very well be the last. I read something somewhere that said we could expect warmer than usual temps for this winter with little snow. I am okay with that but it’s probably not a good trend that each year the winters are more and more mild than the last...Anywho, take the time while you can to check out the sunflower field right by St. Luke’s Anderson Campus in Easton. It sure is beautiful...Did you hear or see the rally that took place in Northampton on Saturday? It was some sort of Trump or flag rally on 21st and Siegfried, at the old Bennet dealership. I didn’t know anything was gonna be happening. Speaking of Northampton, there’s a new voting location for the Fourth Ward. It useta be at the Community Center but now it’s moving to the Gospel Chapel, located at 1769 Newport Ave... There recently was a theft at Miklas Realty in Bath. A woman entered the office and stole some laptops! Can you imagine? They were able to locate the thief... Some positive news for Baththey have started Yoga in the Park on Friday nights right near Ciff Cowling Pavilion. It’s only $5 to Continued on page 5

NORTHAMPTON AREA Boro council

By the end of 2019, the borough had 97.9 percent compliance with its ordinance. Kno-
blach said data will be easier to compare the longer the program is in place. Finally, it was announced that a public MS4 meeting will be held on Thursday, October 1. The borough and its engineers will pres-
ent proposed changes to Dry Run Creek as part of state-mandated MS4 requirements. The borough was awarded a $200,000 grant to help with these improvements. Not only will the changes help with sedimentation issues, but council also suggested that they could help prevent flooding in the area. Residents living along the creek will be notified with more details. Lastly, Northampton's Fourth Ward voting location will be at the Gospel Chapel, 1769 Newport Ave. It will not be at the Northampton Memorial Community Center as it had been.

attend. It looks like they had a Saturday class and there are two upcoming classes for Wednesdays: Aug. 26 and Sept. 2 at 6 p.m. I’d check with the Borough to confirm though if you’re interested in checking it out...Lastly, there was a bad fire Sunday night in Lower Mt. Bethel, Martins Creek Power Plant. Fire crews worked through the night to put the fire out. They think the fire started from lubricating oil leaking from a turbine, which runs at about 1,800 degrees. Luckily no one was hurt though!...To end on a happy note, I saw that Nazareth Ceramic Center is doing mask or apron tie-dying this weekend, that looks like fun. Seems like lotsa people are gettin’ creative at home and tie-dying more than usual...Well I’m out the door for now so have another great week and cya next time.

One thing that is discussed as, “very important,” for our children is socialization, but what does that look like for our young ones returning to the classroom? Could this, “new normal,” be more damaging to them socially then keeping them home? Below is a list of precautions schools are taking to try to keep our children safe this fall semester. Some schools have adopted these precautions as a part of their safety plan, some have not. It is best to check with your child’s school for full details in regards to their plan.
• Plastic barriers between desks. • Distanced desks. • No cafeteria, children must eat at their desks. • No library. • No gym. • No socializing in groups. • No working in teams or together on projects. • Masks must be worn all day and they must be plain, no characters or designs. There are so many things to consider when making the decision to send your children back to school and clearly this is not a one size fits all situation. It is so important to protect our children because children are innocent, amazing, beautiful souls who brighten the world each and every day. It is our job as parents, neighbors, friends, teachers, to make sure we protect and teach them in all aspects of life and regardless of your decision, we need to make sure we are courteous to one another through this difficult time and the hard decisions we are all facing. Always remember to love your littles a little bit more because the love you share with them, they will share with the world.
