Allen Township Supervisors

Approve phases 3, 4 and 5 of Willowbrook development

During their August 22 meeting, the Allen Township Board of Supervisors approved phases 3, 4 and 5 of the proposed Willowbrook Farms subdivision plan. Plans propose 508 homes, including 256 apartments and 225 townhomes along West Bullshead and Willowbrook roads.

Rob Lewis from Kaplin Stewart appeared before the board to discuss the plans, which the board previously reviewed in July. During July’s meeting, supervisors asked developers to consider adding sidewalks to the south side of West Bullshead Road instead of a mid-block crosswalk connecting to the north side of the road. These sidewalks would connect to the Nor-Bath Trail at the intersection of Willowbrook

of the Month

and West Bullshead roads. However, Lewis explained that there is a “pinch point” due to flooding, meaning the sidewalk could only be 4 feet, instead of the required 5 feet.

“If it is truly the Board's preference to provide that extension of the sidewalk, it is physically possible, but not something that our team is recommending be installed,” said Lewis.

Supervisors still voiced support for a sidewalk instead of a crosswalk on West Bullshead.

“It's better than a crosswalk,” said Supervisor Dale Hassler.

Supervisor Gary Behler agreed. “[It] keeps [residents] off the road.”

Annual Community Days rocks Moore Township with record-number attendance

Highlighting heroes: Insight into the careers of Local police officers

The sight of police officers gives many people a rush of in-

tense feelings, whether it be feeling safe knowing they are there to protect our neighborhoods, relief if someone has wronged us, fear if we are engaging in unlawful activities, joy when we see them connecting with the community, concern when we are unsure what caused their presence, and so many others.

Their job is undeniably one of the hardest, and yet, they continue to put their lives on the line every single day for people they have never even met before.

To help the public understand what they do, three local police officers shared the ins and outs of what their careers are like and why they love what they do.

Police Chief Bryan Kadingo

Moore Township’s annual Community Days was held Friday, August 18 and Saturday, August 19 at the township’s rec center. The two-day event saw beautiful weather and large crowds, with thousands in attendance. In fact, the turnout this year topped all previous years and was the highest yet. Help was received from the Bath Fire Dept., East Allen Twp. Fire Dept. and

Wind Gap Fire Dept. with the assistance of parking and traffic control. On Saturday night the entire parking area was filled to capacity around 9 p.m. and the overflow area was filled by 9:30 p.m.

The event’s set-up was provided by Hooven’s Party Rentals, providing shade to attendees on the hot summer days. Some local politicians were in attendance to speak to community members

as they gear up for the election in November. Many community organizations were onsite, local

sanitary sewer design for the development. The main artery of the sewer plan will be owned by the township. However, the individual branches feeding into homes will be owned by the Homeowners' Association.

Finally, developers confirmed

the streets in the development will be wide enough for fire rescue vehicles.

Waivers included eliminating parking requirements along some curbs, removing center lines on two small streets, allowing sanitary sewer construction in the floodplain, removing sidewalks from several median islands, and eliminating the 5-foot-wide requirement for sidewalks along the southern part of West Bullshead

Road. All waivers were approved by supervisors before they ultimately approved the preliminary plans.

In other news, supervisors discussed safety concerns surrounding the East Bullshead Road trestle. Another tractor-trailer recently got stuck under the bridge, blocking the road and causing a headache for neighboring residents.

Township Manager Ilene Eckhart and Hassler met with FedEx representatives to voice their concerns. Contracted drivers, high turnover and inconsistent GPS systems continue to be the primary cause of these traffic issues.

Despite warning signs, trucks still turn down East Bullshead Road. Supervisors discussed possible physical impediments; however, road barriers that don’t meet PennDOT standards could open the township to liability.

Supervisors also discussed a roundabout, which would allow drivers to turn around before reaching the bridge. However, engineer Stan Wojciechowski said a roundabout to fit a tractortrailer would be very large and impede on county agricultural property. While raising the bridge would prevent crashes, supervisors worried that doing so would also encourage tractor-trailers to continue using the road.

Wojciechowski said he could ask his engineering team to sketch up a possible alternative, a “modified pork chop” that would prevent turns.

“Unfortunately, FedEx is here,” said Hassler. “There are some things you can’t fix with duct tape. And these drivers just go where they want to go and do what they want to do, and no matter what you do, they’ll drive through the cornfield to get past

the road.”

A follow-up meeting with Eckhart, FedEx and the county is scheduled.

The next Board of Supervisors meeting will be Tuesday, September 12 at 6 p.m.

Labor Day Travelers

couver, Rome, London, Dublin and Paris are the five most popular international destinations over Labor Day weekend. Compared to 2022, international hotel bookings for the holiday are up 82% and international cruise bookings are up 44%. Canada is popular this time of year because of its cooler temperatures and stunning scenery. Europe has seen a surge in travel this year, with more people eager to see the world again without restrictions. The top five domestic destinations are Seattle, Orlando, Anchorage, New York and Las Vegas. Seattle tourism has been boosted by the strong demand for Alaska cruises. Florida destinations are popular not only for their beaches and theme parks but also for their cruise ports in Central Florida, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa and Miami. AAA data

show domestic-cruise bookings over Labor Day weekend are up 19% compared to 2022.

Drivers taking road trips this Labor Day weekend will likely see slightly higher gas prices compared to last year. The national average for a gallon of regular was $3.78 on Labor Day 2022 but has been above $3.80 for the past couple of weeks. Gas prices have spiked this summer because of tight supply and the high cost of oil.

Best and worst times to travel by car

INRIX, a global provider of transportation data and insights, expects Thursday, August 31, between 2 and 6 p.m. to be the busiest time on the roads during the extended Labor Day weekend. Friday, September 1 is also expected to have higher than normal traffic volumes between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m.

More travelers interested in travel insurance, extended vacations

A new survey of AAA travel advisors reveals topics and trends on the minds of travelers this sum-

mer:

• 59% of AAA Travel Advisors have seen more interest in travel insurance over the past 60 days.

• 83% of AAA Travel Advisors say the most common concern from travelers over the past 60 days was getting stranded by a delayed or canceled flight.

• 64% of AAA Travel Advisors say travelers who booked extended vacations (at least 14 nights) said having more time to explore destinations was their main reason for taking an extended trip.

• AAA Travel Advisors are seeing high interest among travelers for ocean and river cruises, plus all-inclusive and guided-tour vacations.

Survey methodology AAA sent surveys to a random sample of AAA Travel Advisors between July 12 and July 26. AAA received a response from 165 travel advisors.

There was no shortage of things to do, between a basket raffle, lots of vendors and community organizations, bingo, rides, bounce houses, Skeggy’s axe-throwing, the Rajah Shrine’s Tin Lizzies and more, there was something for every member of the family.

Lioness-Lions Club was serving up cabbage and noodles, Mattie’s Strudel Haus was onsite, Lattemann’s offered their sausage sandwiches and steak sandwiches, Klecknersville Rangers Vol. Fire Co. was dishing out ice cream, milkshakes and more, the Boy Scouts had their peach cobbler, additionally there were clams, beer, adult slushies and more.

The two-day event concluded with a fireworks display by Celebration Fireworks on Saturday night.

Bath Farmers Market looking ahead

Submitted by KARLA

As we look forward to the cooler and crisper days of fall, we can already feel and see the signs of its arrival. Days have started getting shorter and nights have begun to get cooler. We welcome September, with a delighted smile, as it marks our last month of the market season.

We are in our 16th week of the season with five weeks left to go. We have welcomed new vendors and returning vendors to the market; as well as wished the best of luck to Matty’s Marvelous Makery this past weekend. Matthew Robles will be continuing to his next step in life. Matthew has mentioned that “hopefully” he will do a pop-up event here and there to bring us his artisanal

breads, baked goods and dips. Stay tuned for those dates, if possible. Check our website and social media pages (facebook and Instagram "bathfarmersmarketpa") for updates.

Visit us on September 9 for our next special event, “Treasures at the Clock.” This will coincide with the community-wide yard sale in the borough. Come see what you can find at the Bath Farmers’ Market. Monocacy Creek Antiques and S. Seem Antiques & Artisans will attend with their selections. Come see what treasures you can find.

This Saturday, AK Farms will have breakfast sandwiches, smoked cheeses and a selection of meats. Bizzle’s Bites Dog Treats will have dehydrated dog treats and different flavored biscuits

as well as nail clipping services. Christ Church of Bath UCC will be providing seasonal produce from Twin Maples farm, quiches, to-go soups and salads and will have a kid’s activity. True Patriot Coffee will have their coffee. Wolf Gang’s Farm will provide us with a bountiful of seasonal produce and eggs. Lehigh Township Supervisors prepare For annual budget

The Lehigh Township Board of Supervisors met on Tuesday, August 22 at 7 p.m.

Township Engineer Michael Muffley sent the board members a detailed letter in regards to the David Roman lot line

adjustment. He stated that only two things are still needed for the plan to be completed, which are the title report and necessary signatures. The board agreed to approve the plan pending the acquisition of these remaining items.

The plan for J&T Enterprises expires at the end of the month, and a request was submitted for an extension. Township Solicitor David Backenstoe informed the board that the township’s actions have been appropriate, but an abstract of the title has never

been submitted. Backenstoe sent the project owners a letter detailing what still needs to be done, but has received no response, and advised the board that there was no option before them but to deny the request and allow the plan to expire, to which they agreed.

Work continues on the new maintenance building. Bracy Construction submitted a request for payment in the amount of $89,767.37 for rebar and concrete, which was approved.

Meanwhile, bids have been received for the upcoming road repavement project on Cottonwood and nearby streets; the low bid came from Barker and Barker in the amount of $470,912.10.

The board discussed whether to accept this bid and use money from the state fund, or to defer the matter until the spring and then put it out for new bids.

Board member Gerald Pritchard recommended accepting the bid, and then discussing at next month’s meeting which fund will cover the cost; after a bit more discussion, the board unanimously agreed to this.

Township Manager Alice Rehrig provided copies of the Capital Improvement Plan to the board members and noted that some of the items will need to be addressed sooner rather than later. She has created a list of the computers in the office which will need to be upgraded with the grant money the township hopes to receive, and is looking into applying for another grant to do likewise with the police department’s computers; she also hopes to upgrade the internet and telephones. The township’s email hosting contract expires in January, at which time she intends to switch from current provider GoDaddy to Google workspace, which will provide better service.

The maintenance department has a vehicle which will be due

for replacement in the relatively near future, so an increase to the maintenance fund may prove necessary. The board continued discussing the possibility of refurbishments to the facilities at Danielsville Park, including adding a pickleball court. Relocating the tennis courts to a drier area in the park is still being considered. Public Works Director Frank Zamadics is waiting for the estimated quote for the cost of repairing them.

The 2024 budget has been prepared and needs to be reviewed. It was decided that the next board meeting on Tuesday, September 12 will begin at 6 instead of 7 p.m. to allow sufficient time to go over the budget. The final version of the comprehen-

sive plan has been received, and Solicitor Backenstoe will verify whether this requires another public meeting or if the board can simply adopt it.

During the month of September some events are taking place at the fire company. On Saturday, September 9, a community yard sale will be held on the grounds beginning at 8 a.m. A bingo night will be held on Saturday, September 22 with dooring opening at 5 p.m. and games beginning at 6 p.m. The plan moving forward is to hold a bingo night four times each year.

The board then adjourned for an executive session to discuss personnel matters.

The next meeting of the Board of Supervisors is scheduled for Tuesday, September 12 at 6 p.m. in the municipal building, located at 1069 Municipal Rd., Walnutport.

from the Northampton Borough Police Department is a Northampton resident who always knew that he wanted to be a police officer since he was a kid. So, in 1989, he started at the Allentown Police Academy and quickly landed a full-time position in May 1990 at the Northampton Borough Police Department, where he has been for the last 33 years, with this year marking his sixth year as chief of police.

Chief Kadingo shares that the perception of police usually revolves around what people see on TV shows or how they’re portrayed in the media, and that a lot of people don’t understand that there’s also an emotional cost as a result of what police officers see on a daily basis.

However, what Chief Kadingo loves most about his job is that it’s not the same grind every day. There are constantly new situations and new people, so he enjoys being able to think on his feet and the challenge of trying to bring a solution to a situation.

Admittingly, he also loves catching the bad guys, but explains that it can also be disheartening to see the way people treat each other.

Positive police presence appears especially important to Chief Kadingo as he divulges that the

most rewarding things for him are interaction with kids in the community, interacting with the community, and the camaraderie among his fellow officers.

“I really enjoy coming to work every day with my men; they’re like family to me,” he shares.

Chief Kadingo states his advice for individuals that are thinking about becoming police officers or that are just starting out is that the job is what you make of it and to approach every person as if you’re dealing with a member of your family that you’re fond of.

Detective Jason Gianatiempo of the Moore Township Police Department is a resident of Allen Township who also knew since he was a kid that he wanted to become a police officer. Coming January 2024, Det. Gianatiempo will have worked in law enforcement for 20 years.

After working as a part-time police officer for Moore Township Police Department since 2009, he was hired as a full-time officer in 2012 and shortly thereafter was promoted to detective, which he is extremely proud of.

Det. Gianatiempo divulges that when it comes to how the public perceives his job, TV shows tend to exaggerate things, which results in a misunderstanding of the capabilities and limitations of his job.

“They portray that police work is easier than it is, but the public doesn’t realize that they’re actors,” he adds.

Det. Gianatiempo beams that the most rewarding thing about his job is piecing together a good case, knowing that he did his job and that he did it right.

Ultimately, Det. Gianatiempo’s favorite part of his job is being able to help people and help victims get justice.

“Even when we give out a ticket, sometimes it helps because it can deter someone from doing something they shouldn’t be doing over and over again,” he shares.

When it comes to advice he would give to potential or new officers and detectives, Det. Giana-

tiempo advises not to bring work home and to never give up.

Officer Scott Greb of the Upper Nazareth Township Police Department is a Lehigh Township resident who also knew he wanted to enter into public service at a young age, which prompted him to attend the Allentown Police Academy in 1993.

However, before becoming a police officer, he enlisted in the U.S. Army from 1994 to 1998. Shortly after separating, Officer Greb became a police officer, which marks 25 years of service.

In terms of what the general public may not know about being a police officer, Officer Greb explains: “It’s the sacrifices that we make for our community— time spent away from our family and friends on holidays, weekends, birthdays, anniversaries and so on.”

Yet this sacrifice is something Officer Greb is proud of because what he likes most about his job are the interactions he has with people and the community, and being the person that they turn to and trust when they need help.

In contrast, the job also comes with its fair share of challenges that require him to remain vigilant because “you never know what the next call is going to be.”

“We take the burden of witnessing some of the scenes that we do, but we shoulder that bur-

den to protect others,” Officer Greb adds.

Officer Greb advises individuals interested in becoming or starting out as a police officer to keep their eyes and ears open, have a good support system of friends and family, and know that they will have to make sacrifices.

So, next time you see a police officer in your neighborhood or community, get to know them! Ask them questions to clear up those misconceptions from bingewatching your favorite police dramas and thank them for their sacrifices because unlike their K-9 counterparts, they don’t bite.
