Nazareth Borough discusses Upcoming events and Ordinance amendments By CHRISTINA SANTO The Nazareth Borough Council met on Monday, August 2 at 6 p.m. to discuss upcoming events and new ordinance amendments. First, council approved three requests from the Nazareth Area Chamber of Commerce to hold three events in the upcoming months. The first was for the Nazareth Fall Festival, which will be held on Saturday, October 16 between 2 and 6 p.m. The event will be held between the Main Street parking lot and the intersection of South Main and East Belvidere Streets. The following two events will not occur until Decem-
ber. They are the Tree Lighting Ceremony to be held on Friday, December 10 at 6 p.m., and the Christmas in Nazareth event, which will be held on Saturday, December 11 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Both of these events will be held in the Circle. An electronics recycling event will be held on October 12 between 3 and 6 p.m. in the Nazareth Park on Broad Street, according to councilman Charles Donello. The event is for borough residents only. A list of items that can be recycled free of charge, as well as those that have a required fee can be found under the trash/recycling section of the borough’s website.
Also, the Nazareth Police Department hosted the borough’s first National Night Out, which gives first responders and the community an opportunity to interact. The event took place on August 3 between 6 to 9 p.m. Hot dogs and drinks were provided; demonstrations and different emergency response vehicles were also on site at the borough park. In other business, council discussed amendments to two ordinances. Ordinance 864 amends Chapter 15, Section 408, which currently reads “...on all streets where angle park-

Bath Council considers Speed bumps on Penn Street By KERI LINDENMUTH During the Borough of Bath Council meeting on Monday, August 2, Mayor Fiorella Mirabito voiced her concerns regarding the future of Penn Street. The street will undergo a much-needed repaving project later this month. However, Mayor Mirabito says she worries that drivers will use the newly paved street as a “speedway.” She asked that council consider adding speed bumps to the street to keep residents safe from reckless drivers. Other council members agreed with Mayor Mirabito that speed will likely be an issue on the street, but were not
sure whether speed bumps would be the right solution. Councilman Tony Kovalovsky worried about the liability speed bumps could cause for the borough. He said that he would prefer to see the State Police more closely patrol the borough and enforce traffic. Councilwoman Carol Bear-Heckman said in similar small boroughs she has seen parking on both sides of the street, along with posted speed signage, to help slow traffic. Meanwhile, Council President Michele Ehrgott said she would prefer signage as opposed to speed bumps. She worried that adding speed bumps to Penn Street would
set a precedent, requiring the borough to add speed bumps to all of the streets slated for repaving later this year and next. While no decision was made during the meeting, Mayor Mirabito asked council to consider the issue sooner rather than later. Borough solicitor Jamie Kratz added that boroughs around the state do use speed bumps with very limited liability. They simply must get specifications from an engineer and then maintain the speed bumps to those specifications. Continued on page 7

We sure have been seein’ nice weather lately, it’s almost been feeling like fall on these cool nights. Looks like hot weather is back in the mix next week though, I don’t mind. That was some storm we had last week. Confirmed tornadoes all over, even one in Slatington at the high school, it knocked over bleachers and blew a roof off a building. The Slatington airport saw some damage as well...Last week you may have noticed traffic was horrendous in the Lehigh Valley, on accounta the President of the United States was in town, visiting Mack Trucks in Lower Macungie Township. Northampton County Bridge 124 on Willowbrook Road, which passes over the Catasauqua Creek, is slated for replacement by Northampton County under the Public-Private Partnership, or P3, program. While the start date for construction has not been announced, Allen Township supervisors have voiced concerns over the proposed full detour and complete closure of the bridge This would send an estimated 10,000 cars per day (as of 2015 statistics) into neighboring East Allen Township, Northampton and North Catasauqua. “This is a situation when a design engineer...does not really know the area and takes the simplest path,” township manager Ilene Eckhart told supervisors during their July 26 meeting. Supervisor Gary Behler said the only possible detours around the area are through Weaversville Road or Airport Road. “None are really great,” he added. He also voiced concern over how the detour would affect East Bullshead and West Bullshead Roads, adding that if West Bullshead is inaccessible, more traffic will use East Bullshead, which will worsen traffic at its intersection with Weaversville Road. Supervisor Dale Hassler agreed. He added that, regardless of the posted detour, “people are going to go where they want to go.” Instead of a full closure, Hassler said he would prefer the southbound lane to remain open at all times for emergency vehicles. While supervisors will give their recommendations to the county, it is the county that has the final decision as to which detour is posted. Hassler asked Eckhart to alert

Stories From My Heart
Gateway to Heaven by Cynthia Jean DeLuca
Yesterday was an overwhelming day, filled with a heavy heart, a tad of frustration, and deep sorrow on
thinking about what I can change and what I cannot change. When I experience these "off days," my heart desires to connect with my loved ones who have made their journey to heaven. Age is not a question when our hearts require familiar comfort. A comfort that soothes and triggers memories of a happier time. On those days when my
mind wanders and feelings elevate and descend, I find that my energy level and motivation are low. Perhaps my mind is in the clouds, so to speak, waiting for a familiar voice. On those particular days, I find it hard even to pray. I look for signs from my loved ones on those tough days; a Cardinal, a butterfly, even a dime on the sidewalk or hiding somewhere in my home. Every morning, I stand in front of beautiful pictures of my family and have a good talk, from my heart. I share with them all the latest news.

Sometimes, I even share who has passed, then think to myself, silly, they already know who died. They probably were the first ones in heaven to hug and greet them. It's funny how those days creep up on you. Somehow we manage to meander through the hours, doing what we have to do and hoping something, whether from God or a loved one, will help assure our hearts that we are okay. Before I share what I saw and heard, I need to share with you a bit more. I believe that things happen for a reason. Sometimes things happen to teach us. Sometimes to remind us, and sometimes to reassure us that everything is okay. When you least expect it, there it is, right in front of you, waiting for you to notice. It was late afternoon as I sat on my front porch surrounded by my planters filled with bright and cheery flowers when a bright red Cardinal started to sing his beautiful song. As my gaze followed the sound, I spotted him sitting high on the telephone wires. The moment I spotted him, this precious red bird spread his wings and flew up high. He flew to a nearby tall Oak tree and disappeared within the dark leaves. I believe he wanted me to see where he was going because what I saw above the tree in the sky took my breath away. There among the white clouds framed by the blue sky, was a perfect circle. At the bottom of the ring, the clouds were thick and appeared deep like a pillow. Then my heart skipped a beat. A small, short,
www.HomeNewsPA.com
darker, narrow-like pencil cloud formed and perched on the pillow cloud. It looked like a person standing, looking down, searching for someone. That scene in the sky reminded me of a gateway to heaven. I could not stop looking at that precious cloud. Then, I noticed more Cardinals singing and even a Hummingbird stopping to enjoy some nectar from a flower. When I looked up again, the cloud was gone. It was as if it had done its job. I believe that God works in mysterious ways. When we are struggling for whatever reasons, our quiet words, feelings, and pain travel to a place where love lives. And in this place where love never dies, our loved ones, angels, and God work together to soothe our hurting hearts. I believe that when we have off days or any day that we find ourselves struggling, God is reminding us that we are not alone. He reminds us to keep looking up, where peace, hope, and love are always in abundance. Dear Friends, I wrote this story to help anyone who is going through a challenging time, whether it be an off day, an illness, or the death of a loved one. My day may have begun on a sad note, but it ended with a grateful heart, knowing that my loved ones are always around me, and so is my creator. You are loved! Cynthia Jean

BATH AREA Bath Council

In other news, council will be adding a discussion item regarding the fire department’s yearly budget to their public safety agenda. Concerns were raised during the meeting by Jimmy Pasquariello, president of the Bath Fire Social Hall. “They need help,” he said of the borough’s volunteer fire department, which relies on funding to purchase new safety equipment and renovate their fire station. Borough Manager Brad Flynn outlined some of the funding the fire department has received over the years.
Roughly $16,000 is put into a capital improvement fund for the fire department, paid for by Bethlehem Township EMS, who leases a bay in the fire station. In addition, between 2015 and 2020, Flynn says the fire department received about $140,000 in funding for workers’ compensation and insurance, in addition to $66,000 raised through the borough’s fire tax. “[The fire department] can come to us and ask,” said Flynn. “We do not get any requests, [so we] are under the assumption that everything is fine.” Other business discussed during the meeting includ-

Other upcoming community events include another summer “Kool off the Kids.” The last event, held in July, allowed area children to frolic in the sprinklers at Carl Rehrig Park and cool off with some Italian ice. Mayor Mirabito thanked the Bath Water Authority and the fire
department for helping with the event and hopes one more “kool off” can be held before school starts. Finally, council approved the new rental inspection ordinance for advertisement for possible adoption in September. That meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 8. As always, the public is encouraged to attend so they can ask questions and stay informed. License # PA003267

ing is required, every vehicle parked at the angle shall be parked with its front nearest the curb.” Angle parking is required in Center Square and on the north side of East Prospect Street between South Spruce and South Broad Streets; the latter is only required on Sundays from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. The proposed change to the ordinance is that cars would be required to back into the angled parking spots, because pulling in has people driving against the grain of traffic. However, two parking spaces in the southeast corner of Center Square will be exempt from the ordinance change. This change was advertised at council’s July meeting, and approved at their August
meeting. Council also approved a motion to advertise for an amendment to Chapter 15, Section 205, which would remove the one-way designation of Bacon Street. Finally, borough secretary Paul Kokolus discussed the newly enacted Act 65. The act was signed by Governor Tom Wolf on June 30 and creates new agenda requirements for governmental entities across the state of Pennsylvania. This means the agenda will have to be posted on the doors of council chamber and on the borough’s website at least 24 hours in advance; paper copies of the agenda are also required to be available to meeting attendees, which the borough already does. Nazareth Borough Council will hold their next meeting on Tuesday, September 7 at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers on West Center Street.

Nazareth School Board hears From public regarding mask Policy prior to vote by JOE KORBA
There was a large public turnout both online and in person at the July 27 meeting of the Nazareth Area Board of School Directors. The board was set to vote on a health and safety plan for the upcoming school year and parents turned out to let their opinions about masks and vaccinations be known. The health and safety plan states: • Masks will be required on buses, regardless of vaccination status, per CDC requirements for public transportation. • A physical distance of 3 feet should be maintained when practical to do so. • Frequent hand washing, cleaning and sanitizing will take place in all schools. • All rooms will have six to seven air changes per hour. • Vaccinations and proof of vaccinations will not be required from students or staff. • Volunteers and visitors will be required to wear masks during the instructional day and provide proof of vaccination. • Masks will be optional in all other instances. The first speaker, a resident of Lower Nazareth with two
kids in the district, said that he felt the health and safety plan was poorly developed and didn’t do enough to keep children safe. He said the development of the plan was not transparent and of the 39 review team members, only eight are classroom teachers. “The safest part of the kids’ school day will be on the bus, where masks are mandatory,” he said. After his pro-mask comments, the speaker was met with laughter from the public in attendance. Some of the points made from this contingent touched on questions of effectiveness and whether masks potentially transmit dangerous bacteria. A parent noted that children who were abused could potentially experience posttraumatic stress symptoms because of something placed over the nose and mouth. One of the mask-optional speakers discussed mental health problems that masking kids could cause, in his opinion. He presented anecdotal evidence about a local rise in teen suicides since the beginning of the pandemic that he gathered by visiting local medical facilities. “If I was so afraid of my
kids getting sick, I wouldn’t send them to school at all,” a parent said in response to pro-masking comments. After a parent noted that she does not support advertising or promoting vaccination in any way in the schools, saying that “minors should discuss medical decisions with parents,” School Board Treasurer Kenneth Butz asked how many of these comments relate to agenda items. One of the more contentious issues was if Board Member Gregory Leh should recuse himself from the health and safety plan vote. Some of the attendees said that his affiliation with St. Luke’s hospital could potentially be a conflict of interest. Leh defended himself, addressing the crowd directly about the dangers of Covid-19, the effectiveness of masks and the Center for Disease Control recommendations that were released the day of the meeting that encouraged indoor masking for staff, students and visitors to schools regardless of vaccination status. He said that he had no financial interest in the vote and would not recuse himself. “Shame on you,” Leh said to people who tried to intimidate him via email, phone calls and text messages. Leh continued, saying that he is aware of the stress this pandemic brings to children. While he believes the current plan is a good one, he doesn’t believe that it goes far enough. Face coverings, social distancing and other mitigation measures like school closings need to be addressed in the plan, he said. Board Member Denise Glaros said that she will be voting yes for the mask optional health and safety plan because she believes that “masks worn by healthy individuals cause more harm than good.”

School Board
Continued from page 10
Board Member Adam McGlynn noted that masking has caused “a lot of division” in the community and said he believes that students should be in school. However, he doesn’t believe the current plan represents the most people possible. He will be voting no. Board President Linda Stubits discussed her son, who is very compromised because of medical conditions, and whom they have had to protect themselves for 27 years from potentially very harmful respiratory illnesses. She said he isn’t afraid to go outside right now and that she thinks we can protect ourselves and that we can do this safely. Stubits said that she personally opposes government mandates and would be a hypocrite to impose mandates on others. Board Member Kathryn Roberts said she is going to vote to approve the plan. “We need to offer a choice,”
she said. Board Vice President Joseph Vasko said that this is one of the most difficult votes he will have to make in all of his years on the board. Ultimately, the health and safety plan passed. In closing comments some members of the community spoke again during public comment against mandatory masking and thanked the board. The Nazareth Area School District Board of Directors meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month.
