Facebook Marketplace

Submitted by STEVE GARDNER The holidays are getting close and many of us are looking for those last minute deals. One place people are turning to is Facebook Marketplace, but beware because scammers are lurking. The spike in online shopping has unfortunately led many victims right to the criminals who offer deals too good to pass up. This fall, the AARP Fraud Watch Network Helpline has received a high volume of calls from people losing money to scams on Facebook Marketplace. Here are some tips to avoid online sales scams. Before making that purchase research what simi-

lar items are selling for elsewhere, the greater the deal the greater the likelihood that it could be a scam. Buy local versus having something shipped, and arrange to meet in a public space. Pay cash – if asked to pay by a payment app, wire transfer or gift card, refuse. Finally, if you need to get an item shipped, use a credit card which has fraud protections. Be a fraud fighter. If you can spot a scam, you can stop a scam. Report scams to local law enforcement. For help from AARP, call 1-877-908-3360 or visit the AARP Fraud Watch Network at www.aarp.org/fraudwatchnetwork.

Bath Borough passes roads Ordinance, accepts 23 public roads By KERI LINDENMUTH During their meeting on Monday, December 7, the Borough of Bath Council unanimously approved a roads ordinance that officially ordained 23 roads as public. These roads, explained solicitor James Kratz, were opened “some time ago,” but the ordinances could not be found in the borough’s records. Following the 2016 discovery that Sleepy Hollow Road was actually a private road, the borough spent over two years conducting a road inventory to see which borough roads are private, which are public, and which are listed on PennDOT’s liquid fuels map. For roads to be made public, they had to meet certain criteria regarding width, utilities, use, and length. During the inventory, the borough identified 23 existing streets or parts of streets that are currently used by the public but not ordained. Over 51 percent of the property owners living on these streets agreed to hand over the

roads for borough maintenance and snow removal. This majority rule was one of the required criteria outlined by the borough. Roads included Mill Street, Oak Street, Green Street, Mulberry Street, Schaffer Street, Horner Street, Stone Post Road, Union Street, Locust Street, and Friendship Lane. However, there are several roads in the borough, like Sleepy Hollow Road, that remain private, either because they did not meet the criteria or 51 percent of residents did not agree to hand over the road. This does not mean, however, that the process is over, according to council president Mark Saginario. “We knew from the beginning that we needed a starting point and a road plan,” he said. “Any road that has not been adopted can petition council.” He added that council can add, subtract, or change the criteria for eligible roads, which they intend to do in phase two of this process.

Northampton Borough Council approves Eagle Scout Project

“It is a natural order...a progression,” he said. “I look forward to continuing this.” Monday’s meeting, the last of the year, was brief, a conscious effort council made as COVID cases in the area rise. All committee reports were put on hold until the New Year. “We will break for the holiday and hopefully have some better times ahead of us going into next year,” said Saginario. He and members of council urged residents to have a safe holiday season. “Council has been fantastic to work with over this pandemic period,” said borough manager Brad Flynn. “We’re going to get through this the next few months and we are going to be stronger.” “Be safe, be well, and see you next year,” added Mayor Fiorella Mirabito.

Moore Township Supervisors discuss Budget, no property Tax increases by JASON KAMERY The Moore Township Board of Supervisors met at 7 p.m. on December 1 via Zoom to discuss the 2021 Budget and a Jake Brake restriction request. Last month the Board of Supervisors received a request for a Jake Brake restriction along State Route 946 within the vicinity of Mink Road. Township Engineer Kevin Horvath did some addi-

tional research, including possible expenses associated with it. “According to our traffic engineers, PennDOT does not charge for the study needed to determine whether or not that prohibition is permissible,” Horvath said. “General guidelines that PennDot sets forth for Jake Brake are related to the slope. By CHRISTINA SANTO The Northampton Borough Council met on Thursday, December 3 to consider the request of the Gospel Chapel and approval of an Eagle Scout project. Borough Manager LeRoy Brobst contacted the Gospel Chapel after their request was tabled at the previous council meeting. The original request was to hold a live nativity scene on Christmas Eve, which would require the use of a municipal park and the bandshell. This request has been modified to allow the Gospel Chapel to use the Uptown Park on December 19 between 6 and 8 p.m. for Christmas carols. Next, borough council approved Noah Hassler’s Eagle Scout Project. As part of the project, two blessing boxes would be placed in the borough; blessing boxes are structures that people

can place or retrieve non-perishable food items, such as canned fruits and vegetables. Hassler came up with several potential locations and will work with council to determine the best possible locations. Once the boxes are installed, Hassler will check to see there are no damages or repairs that need to be made. Council also recommended talking to the Northampton Area Food Bank to see if they would be interested in checking on the blessing boxes or contributing food items. Council passed a motion allowing the preliminary approval of the 2021 budget. The budget was first introduced at the last meeting, but was reworked by Brobst, who feels more confident about the second draft. The Continued on page 3

states that a road with an average grade in excess of four percent within any 500-foot section of highway may not have that prohibition. So for a steeper sloping road, they don’t want that prohibition because that’s when a Jake Brake is actually necessary. In this case, I did a basic desktop

evaluation using Google Earth and some publicly available information.” Horvath evaluated a nearly 1,500-foot segment of 946, beginning 300 feet east of Mink Road and extending west to Teel Road and found the average road grade appears to exceed five percent. Based on his desktop evaluation, he does not believe the Jake Brake restriction would be permissible on that section of the road. Horvath stated that ultimately the determination would be up to PennDOT.

The Board of Supervisors voted to move forward with sending a letter to PennDOT to start the Jake Brake restriction study. Township Manager Nicholas Steiner voiced some of the topics discussed at their budget workshop meeting. “Some of the major budget items for this year include funding for a new police vehicle, a new zoning vehicle, and then we moved the current vehicle over to the recreation center,” Steiner said. “Some of the other items are

$50,000 for MS4 infrastructure [for township stormwater management improvements, mandated but not funded by the state]. This year with COVID, the income is coming in now about where it was last year. Usually, it’s about a one percent increase. So I did a .8 percent increase with the uncertainties of not knowing what will happen.” The budget also has $15,000 in it designed for improvements to both the recreation center and Edelman Schoolhouse. disease yet it could also have been some of “my own actions or lack thereof ” as a contributor. If I want to be honest with myself, then yes, I did contribute or at least could have helped in the healing process a little more if I had went from “I should” to “I must” a little quicker. Each and every one of us are human and as such we do things

For the healthminded individual by DR. GLENN CLEARIE, DC

Should Isn’t Enough

A couple weeks ago I pondered this question; Is health important? Now you may think the answer to this question is clearly obvious…yet is it? Let me explain. Having been a healthcare practitioner for well over 20 years now, I can say with reasonable certainty that what we may say is important with our mouths, doesn’t add up to our actions or a lack thereof. The fact of the matter is that many appear to actually be going out of their way to do their own body harm. I could give many examples of each of our hypocrisy, including myself, yet why waste time on all that.

Rest assured we all know what’s good for us and what isn’t. We all know what will make us healthy and make us sick. By and large we do not need warning labels to tell us what we already understand. In fact, for the most part when we are diagnosed with conditions, many of us knew something would probably happen at some point. I do not say any of this flippantly or clearly without exception. I myself had not one but two cardiac ablations close to a decade ago now. I try to put the cause directly on a bout of Lyme

we shouldn’t and don’t do things we should. It’s the bizarre nature of us all. None of us are immune from human nature. I hear statements like; “I should lose weight”, “I should exercise”, “I should drink more water, less soda”, “I should meditate”, “I should stop smoking”…all the Continued on page 6

time. The truth is “I should” just isn’t enough. The statement that begins with “I should” usually has a “but” in it also. (“I should stop smoking but my job is too stressful right now.” “I should really get my diabetes under control but I love bread too much.” “I should get more sleep but the game is on,” etc.…) So again, health is something we generally accept as important, yet no more effort is usually put forth to maintain or regain it. If

we actually went from “I should” to “I must,” I bet we would see acute and chronic illness cut in half seemingly overnight. Think I am mistaken? I don’t. I have seen those who make the shift from “should” to “must” make incredible strides in every area of life. Whether personal health, marriage or relationships, professional careers, or whatever you can think of, when you go from the “I should” to “I must” mentality, everything changes. I mean everything. Suddenly the world feels different. Everyone seems different. Guess what? It’s really that you’re different-and once expanded like this, you can’t ever go back. Again, I have seen this and experienced this first hand. By and large these incredible breakthrough moments happen when there is an ultimate realization that the pain of staying in the same way is greater than the actual pain of change. When you come to this conclusion regarding your weight, you suddenly drop significant amounts of weight effortlessly. When you go from “I should” to “I must” regarding smoking, not only will you stop in a flash, you will vomit at the thought of ever putting that disgusting substance in your beautiful God-given lungs and body ever again. Same with alcohol, drugs, or even emotions that you may struggle with like guilt, envy, anger or fear. At the moment, I am not asking you to do anything more than at least see with your eyes what you earnestly know needs some, well “attention.” I myself have done this exercise, and while I cannot say it was pleasant, in some areas it was extremely rewarding and freeing in a great sense. May you never be the same. "Natural Perspectives" is a health commentary only and does not claim to diagnose and/ or make treatment recommendations. this past Saturday afternoon. I love seeing all the creativity and positivity during the pandemic...A new barber shop is opening up in Moore Twp this week, it’s called Waylon’s Barber Shop on Monococy Drive, welcome to the community...Christmas on Chestnut Street in Bath has been rescheduled to this Saturday due to inclement weather last week. Although, it’s not just Wentz that’s playing poorly, and he seems to be getting all the blame... The Steelers finally lost their winning streak. There were quite a few over the past week in the area. And then there was that Salisbury Township woman that went missing last week, she was later found dead in Allentown. One person was taken to the hospital...On Monday evening a procession passed through the area to honor Don ShamContinued on page 12

the Circle. Jessica O’Donnell, EVP of Affiliated Chambers for the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce, commented, “These two popular annual holiday traditions in Nazareth could not come at a better time for all of us. Yes we’ve made a few edits to maintain a very safe environment, but we still have a great

schedule of events for all ages that promises to put everyone in the holiday spirit while supporting many local small businesses. Be sure to check us out and spread some holiday cheer— you’ll be glad you did.” Mayor Lance Colondo said,

“The holiday season is upon us again, and as Mayor of Nazareth Borough I want to thank the Nazareth Area Chamber of Commerce for hosting two holiday events for our residents and local businesses to enjoy. The Tree Lighting Ceremony and

Christmas in Nazareth are both events that have become much anticipated annual traditions. Shop small and local and enjoy the holidays here in Nazareth.” Mike Woodland, co-owner of Dan’s Camera City, commentContinued on page 12

ed, “Christmas in Nazareth is a wonderful holiday event for the whole family. Dan's is pleased to sponsor this event again as we bring together the Friday evening tree lighting with the Saturday events to create a great holiday memory for Nazareth and beyond. I look forward to seeing the community enjoy our efforts.” Lauren Bertucci, Manager of Affiliated Chambers for the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce, commented, “As these uncertain times continue, we need the holiday spirit now more than ever. Our team and holiday committee are thrilled to be able to host both beloved events in some capacity for our community.
