Looking by Back Ed Pany Fella Studios, Part 1 of 5

Betty Fella was the wife of Oscar Fella. Photo courtesy of the Fella family Driving up Main Street in Northampton, you will pass a landmark business that has served the area for 77 years. Many of our residents have called upon Fella Studios for photographs and portraits, from graduation to weddings and many special occasions. Mr. Martin Fella Jr., a graduate of Northampton High School and former student of this writer, has continued the family legacy. During Martin’s high school years, he was everywhere with his trusty camera- in the halls, at concerts, class plays, sports events- and was photographer for the Amptennian, the high school

yearbook. The family roots take us back to Austria, where his grandfather, Oscar Fella, started the photography odyssey. Oscar opened a photo shop in his small village. An excellent photographer, he took photographs for a number of Austrian government committees. Oscar and his wife Elizabeth decided to follow some of their neighbors and came to the land of opportunity, the United States. When their ship entered New York Harbor, they saw the Statue of Liberty and, as millions of other immigrants, this symbol of freedom gave them hope for a better life. They landed at Ellis Island and marveled at the large hall, while waiting in line to be checked and processed by hardworking government agents. After being processed, Oscar was told a photographer in Brooklyn was in need of a skilled photographer. He met the owner, Mr. George Lamb. Mr. Fella’s work was exceptional and, in a year, he became a partner in Fella & Lamb Studio. Always looking for opportunity, he was told by a customer that the man’s relative was looking for a trained photographer in Scranton. After careful consideration, Continued on page 5

Bath Borough illuminates Christmas spirit during annual Tree lighting ceremony By SAVANNAH BROWN Residents withstood the rainy weather as the Borough of Bath held their annual tree lighting ceremony on Sunday, December 3 at Monocacy Creek Park. After being rescheduled from the previous Sunday due to inclement weather that day as well, Mayor Fiorella Mirabito prayed for the rain to let up prior to the event. However, a little drizzle never hurt, so those in attendance came prepared with umbrellas in tow. Then, halfway through the ceremony, the rain stopped, just in time for Santa’s arrival. “The weather didn’t cooperate, but it certainly didn’t dampen the spirit of all who came out to see our beautiful Christmas tree ready for the season!” said Mirabito. To begin the ceremony, Pastor Terry Walsh from St. John’s Lutheran Church provided the opening prayer, followed by a beautiful rendition of the “National Anthem” sung by Charlotte Raynor from Doylestown. Bath Borough Council Vice President Frank Hesch then thanked those in attendance and shared a few words on behalf of council. “Although the weather may not be ideal, the display of community and togetherness can't be dampened by any amount of rain. These are the moments we should cherish throughout the year,” Hesch expressed. Next, Sarah Brandl led the

Bath Borough Council members from left to right: Frank Hesch, Phyllis Andrews, Barry Fenstermaker, Douglas Hamadyk, Mayor Fiorella Mirabito and James Lisiecki George Wolf Elementary School chorus as they sang carols such as “Showbiz Snowman,” “Jolly Jingle Christmas Medley” and “Silent Night.” Although the GWES chorus was a tough act to follow, Father Christopher Butera from Sacred Heart Church blessed the Christmas tree and asked that its light shine forth and be a sign of joy in the borough.

Moore Township Supervisors adopt 2024 budget; Honor ‘first township manager’ By SAVANNAH BROWN The Moore Township Board of Supervisors met Tuesday, December 5 to discuss reports, open space applications, stormwater management updates, CD renewals, the 2024 tax levy and budget and honor Nick Steiner as the “First Township Manager.” During reports, Police Chief Gary West provided that the police department had a total of 268 incidents for the month of November, which included 12 written and verbal warnings issued, 10 traffic citations issued, three arrests for DUI, one arrest for illegally attempting to purchase a firearm, three reportable accidents and four non-reportable accidents. Fire Police Captain Jason Harhart reported that the Klecknersville Rangers Vol. Fire Co. responded to 74 ambulance calls during the month of November and 22 fire calls, which accounted for two fires, two motor vehicle accidents, three automatic fire alarms, seven ambulance assists, one wire down, one tree down, three mutual aid calls with Bath for one gas leak and two fire police, two mutual aid calls with Bushkill Township for one fire police and one carbon dioxide alarm and one mutual aid call with Lehigh Township for fire police. Following, Public Works Director Craig Hoffman requested the promotion of Brandon Biery from municipal work to equipment operator/repair and his associated pay rate, which supervisors unanimously granted. Biery has been with the township for approximately five years, and Hoffman expressed that he has done very well at his job, which is why he is being promoted. Additionally, Hoffman announced that the last day for leaf collection and the closing of Schiavone Farm will occur on Friday, December 15. Next, Historical Commission Chairperson Charmaine Bartholomew provided an update on the Edelman Schoolhouse renovations, the work that still has to be done and the slow renovation progress of Historical

Commission member Bob Fedio of Fedio Construction. Fedio signed a contract with the township several months ago for the renovations of the schoolhouse and committed to a 120-day project turnover with a mid- to late-September start date, which he suggested. However, he has been having trouble making good time in terms of the project deadline. Township Engineer Kevin Horvath noted that he has been contacting Fedio weekly to remind him of his timeline and contractual obligations to the township. Fedio was not in attendance of the meeting, BAKED ZITI CHICKEN PARMIGIANA so supervisors suggested that he come before the board to let them know the status of the project and ask for relief if he will not be able to finish the project by the deadline. In other business, Land and Environmental SAUSAGE PEPPERS CHICKEN MARSALA Protection Board Chairman Robert Romano preAND ONIONS sented the board with three new open space applications. Supervisors unanimously approved moving forward with all three applications. Next, Horvath provided recommendation for MEATBALL AND CHICKEN GIAMBOTTA supervisors to grant a letter of credit reduction to SAUSAGE PIZZAIOLA the wheel collision center land development plan and to proceed with the 18-month maintenance WHITE agreement period based on the project’s completed improvements, which the board granted unanimously. Township Solicitor David M. Backenstoe then updated the board on the township’s stormwater management regulation arrangements that Horvath had been diligently working on. The arrangements include two stormwater management resolution 201 W. Main Street, Bath updates and one SALDO revi484-281-3661 sion. The board unanimously 201 W. Remind Me

by DR. GLENN CLEARIE, DC

Who are you…really? Tell me as I truly want to know. Are you the skin and bones we all see or are you, are we, something more? I’ll tell you my take on it all and it’s this: you my friend are completely and totally loved by God. In fact, God went out of his busy schedule to think about how He was going to design every nook and cranny of you. Nothing about you… and nothing that ever happens to you… catches God by surprise. You are a child of the Most High. So, allow me to remind you that you are a three-part being. You are a spirit that has a soul, and resides, albeit briefly, in this body. Fascinating. Look I didn’t make it this way I’m simply telling you how it is. Your disbelief will not change that fact. Now let’s bring it all back to this side of heaven for a moment. Knowing all this, remind me again why you are so stressed, worried, angry, frustrated, depressed, anxious and all the rest? Look, I know the pain of this existence all too well myself; I also know the joy. Not sure if we could have one without the other no matter how much I would

www.HomeNewsPA.com

want that. What if, now follow me here, what if, everything you have been through, the heartache, the pain, the sorrow, the joys, the celebration, the success, the failures, all of it, have made you into this incredible person you are today? I’m not sure who I would be without it all, quite frankly. Thinking it over in some strange, introspective way, I can see how it made me a better person. At the very least my heart has softened because of it all collectively and my deepest desire is to be that better person with whatever time I have left. If you are in the midst of anguish, may I invite you to perform a brief release exercise with me. Humor me for a moment. Go ahead and sit quietly with your eyes closed and feet flat on the ground. Arms relaxed and hands gently resting on your lap. Take a breath in. Slowly draw it down into your chest. As you do, envision golden light from heaven funneling down into you as you pull that breath into your chest. Now, slowly breathe out. Let that out breath push that golden light deeper into your gut and into your legs as you see in your mind that golden light from heaven blowing out black smoke through your feet, straight out your body. Envision that blown-out black smoke as it releases all your pain, your anxiety, your shortcomings, your pain going straight out of you. When you see the smoke vented all the way out and the golden light pushing it out, take a breath in and now breathe that golden light back in and back up into your chest. Now perform another exhale and push that golden light back up through your chest, your shoulders, neck and your face and then straight through your head right back up to heaven. Repeat this two more times, except now it’s all golden light because all the smoke has been blown out. These breaths are rejuvenating light. See this as a truth. Feel the release of all tension. Believe me when I tell you during that first breath you may actually smell black toxic smoke as it all comes out of your feet. Do not be startled by this. Embrace the notion that you are being cleansed; body-mind spirit. Look, every once in a while, you need to be reminded who you truly are. So let me once again share that you are so much more than the collection of days past and candidly days future as you will live for an eternity. Now, remind me again what you are worried about? My best to you. "Natural Perspectives" is a health commentary only and does not claim to diagnose and/or make treatment recommendations. Always seek the advice of your health care professional.

Oscar and his wife Elizabeth boarded a Lehigh Valley passenger train to Scranton. The train stopped in Bethlehem, when Oscar saw the skyline dominated by the massive Bethlehem Steel plant. They made a monumental decision.

Mr. Fella said, “We will make our new home in Bethlehem, the steel city.” Mr. Fella was fortunate. In a few days, he was hired by Biro Studios as an assistant in its photography studio. zens of Bath, welcome all people in a spirit of liveliness in the same way this Evergreen tree radiates its life and its light in our community,” prayed Butera. Following, Mayor Mirabito revealed: “Every year it is my honor and pleasure to choose someone in the community that has made a difference or has gone above and beyond. This year, I chose Mrs. Dawn Mayer. She is the director of St. John's [Lutheran Church] Nursery School, but that's just one of the things she does.” According to her bio, Mayer moved to Bath in 1998 hoping to find a better life and place to raise her three daughters. She has been very active with the children of Bath over her 21 years as a preschool teacher at St. John's Lutheran Church Nursery School and hopes to continue the wonderful experiences she’s had with the children for years to come. During her speech, Mayer disclosed that her son-in-law has a genetic disease called Alport syndrome. Although the family knew about it for years, they didn't think the disease would become critical until later in life. However, they recently got the news that her son-in-law’s health was declining and he had to be placed on dialysis, which was rough for their family considering he and his wife have a young daughter. As they desperately looked for a donor match, Mayer’s daughter Melody said she’d try, and lo and behold, she was a match! Mayer explained that during the last part of the process, the donor team meets with donors and asks them some questions. They asked Melody: “Why is it that you want to donate this kidney?” Melody confessed, “I have a niece that's going to need her daddy around for a long time.” So, she stepped up to the plate to selflessly donate one of her kidneys to her brother-in-law. “I feel honored that I was asked

dy has done. So, in honor of Melody, I'm going to let her flip the switch tonight,” beamed Mayer. Then, the audience helped count down from five as Melody lit the tree, and everyone cheered as the colored, twinkling lights illuminated the park. Next, Mayor Mirabito thanked Unangst Tree Farm who donated the then 10-foot tree back in 2014, Bobby Siegfried for providing audio for the event, Council Pro Tem Barry Fenstermaker and his wife for donating the candy canes that the big guy handed out to children, the members of Bath Borough Council, as well as their office staff, Public Works Department, the Bath Fire Department and their Fire Police, Father Butera and Pastor Walsh for providing spiritual guidance, Mountain Creek Riding Stables for providing the free horsedrawn wagon rides and Cub Pack 33 for providing hot chocolate and cookies during the event. “On behalf of my family, I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year,” effused Mirabito. Then, Santa Claus rode in on his big red firetruck, before posing for photos, giving out candy canes and listening closely to all of the children’s Christmas wishes.

Northampton Borough Council discusses proposed 2024 Budget with a one mill tax increase By SAVANNAH BROWN The Northampton Borough Council met Thursday, December 7 to discuss the police agreement, the non-uniformed agreement, various requests, the 2024 budget and the Stone Ridge Meadow development. First, council unanimously approved ratification of the Jan. 1, 2024 through Dec. 31, 2026 police agreement based on the police committee’s request. The agreement includes a salary increase of 4.5% for each year, a reduction of pension withheld to 3%, reimbursement of $155 for each unused sick day and incremental increases to retirees with more than 25 years of service. Council then unanimously approved the Jan. 1, 2024 through Dec. 31, 2026 non-uniformed personnel agreement, which includes a 4% increase for each calendar year, an opportunity for employees to participate in the defined benefit pension plan or the defined contribution plan, reimbursement of $105 for each unused sick day and an educational annual reimbursement of $1,500 for training in a field that would benefit an employee’s

service to the borough, as well as an adjustment of the benefit pension plan from 1.6% to 1.7%. Next, council unanimously approved a request from the New Journey Community Church to hold their second annual Easter Egg Hunt in the Municipal Park on Saturday, March 30 with all fees waived. Council also unanimously approved the adjustment of Mary Ellen Handlon’s retirement date from Dec. 31, 2023 to April 15, 2024 since she has offered to remain in her position full-time through mid-April in order to ensure proper training of her replacement. In other news, council unanimously approved the request from the Wheels on the Canal committee for permission to hold their sixth annual Wheels on the Canal Extravaganza on Saturday, May 18 with a rain date of Sunday, May 19. The event is scheduled on Armed Forces Day and focuses on raising money for veterans’ charities. Following, council unanimously approved the Civil Service Commission’s request to void their current eligibility list

and authorization for the committee to prepare a new eligibility list. During council’s consideration of the 2024 budget, it was noted that preparation for the budget was one of the most difficult that Borough Manager LeRoy E. Brobst has had to prepare in his 58 years of service to the borough due to 2023 being an “exceedingly challenging year” with unexpected expenses and shortfalls. Brobst shared that moving forward, the budget will require a one mill tax increase. Some of the things included in the proposed 2024 budget include a new police cruiser, a new command vehicle for the fire company, a bucket truck and two additional employees for public works, ongoing expenses with the MS4 projects and exercise equipment for the Recreation Center. Some council members requested time to review the budget and reach out to Brobst with any questions they may have. During the bi-monthly December 21 meeting, council will need to continue the budget discussion and potentially adopt it at that time since the budget

must be adopted by the end of the month. If council is unable to adopt the budget at the upcoming meeting, a special meeting will be required prior to December 31. Councilman Anthony S. Lopsonzski pointed out that the one mill tax increase amounts to about $58 to $75 for the average household depending on the assessment of their home and added that the tax increase is necessary and not excessive, stating: “This is a very fair budget.” Council-

woman Bonnie Almond chimed, “I see no fluff or waste in the budget to keep in line with the economy and [the borough’s] needs.” The consensus of council was in favor of the proposed one mill tax increase, and each council member thanked Brobst for the hard work and great job he did. In other news, council unani-

mously approved the preliminary and final approval of the Stone Ridge Meadow Development with assurances that HOA will be responsible for maintenance upon the project’s completion. The 40-acre development property fronts on Route 329 between Horwith Drive and Savage Continued on page 14
