Haff Hospital
A number of years ago, I wrote a history of a Northampton and area landmark- the Haff Hospital.
I was fortunate to interview Mrs. Doris Danner, a dedicated nurse who graduated from the Haff Hospital nursing program.
In my research with Mrs. Sallyann Madden, former Northampton Area High School librarian, we researched the old Cement News, a Northampton newspaper that served the Cement Belt. We found a May 6, 1921 edition with the headline: “Dr. Haff’s New Hospital on Siegfried Avenue.”
“Ground was broken on Monday for the erection of Dr. Charles A. Haff’s new private hospital. The present building at 2006 Washington Ave., Northampton,
is inadequate to the growing demands upon the establishment, and Dr. Haff, after due deliberation, decided to enlarge the hospital.
“Many sites were offered, but the one of Siegfried Avenue, near 21st Street, was acquired from the Levan estate. In a few days, they commenced excavation for the foundation. This part of the work is being done by Sheaffer and Reyer contractors, who employed their steam shovel on the job.
“M.M. Casey Co. Construction, of New York City, has been awarded the contract to erect the hospital. The structure will be 90x50 feet, a three-story build-
Alliance Fire Co. gives Generous Donation to Northampton Fire Dept.
By SAVANNAH BROWNOn Monday, December 19, members of Alliance Fire Company social club gathered to present a generous $5,000 donation to the Northampton Fire Department.
Vice President Todd Csencsits from Alliance Fire Company social club warmly expressed, “Our whole mission here at the fire company is to give back to the community and we are very pleased that we can give you a $5,000 check today.”
Fire Chief Keith Knoblach graciously accepted the donation on behalf of Northampton Fire Department.
Alliance Fire Company is committed to thoughtfully donating to various entities in the Northampton Borough. Just last month, Alliance Fire Company donated $2,000 to Northampton Regional EMS, $2,000 to Northampton Borough Police Department, and $2,000 to Northampton Borough Council for the pickleball courts at Alliance Park behind Alliance Fire House.
NOTEWORTHY NEIGHBORS
Local
heroes:
EMS workers Share the ups and downs of Their career field
By SAVANNAH BROWNThe life of an Emergency Medical Services worker is very different from your average nine to five. It can be hectic, demanding, and strenuous, but also rewarding, meaningful, and even life changing.
To gain perspective into this heroic career field, three local EMS workers volunteered their time: Maria Wescoe, a Northampton resident and the Director of Operations at Northampton Regional EMS with 41 years of service; Joe Light, an East Allen Township resident and President of East Allen Township Volunteer Ambulance Corps with 14 years of service; and Ryan Bowers, a Lehigh Township resident and Paramedic at City of Bethlehem EMS, who also volunteers at Bushkill Township Volunteer Fire Co. and Lehigh Township Volunteer Fire Co. with 16 years of service.
The consensus among these three EMS workers regarding what the public may not know is
how understaffed this career field currently is, which poses many challenges. For instance, when answering calls to neighboring municipalities due to short staffing, there are no ambulances left to backfill the community, not to mention the countless overtime hours that EMS workers face.
The Home News is seeking essential workers in the community to interview for a new, ongoing feature, Noteworthy Neighbors. Emergency responders, teachers, local government, bus drivers, farmers, etc.; if you do essential work for a living, we want to hear from you. If you are interested in being interviewed and sharing with the community the work that you do, please email AskUs@HomeNewsPA.com.
And although some EMS organizations are tax based, many are not. This means the organizations that do not receive tax revenue have to fund themselves, often only relying on donations, fundraising, and low insurance reimbursements, which isn’t enough to keep up with rising costs.
Joe also shared that volunteerism is dying because EMS is

ing absolutely fireproof. There are beautiful surroundings, good drainage and good access.
“An automatic elevator will run from the basement to the roof, where convalescent patients may be taken. The latest telephone and patient signal systems will be installed. There will be 50 beds available in private rooms and no general wards. A special infants room will add to the caring for obstetrical cases. In the basement, there will be an X-ray room and pathological laboratory. The operating room will be 16x18 feet.
“The new hospital is designed to meet the demand of a number of industrial plants, which are aiding and supporting the project and also providing larger quarters
for Dr. Haff’s private work.
“This year, patients have come from Northampton, Cementon, Egypt, Coplay, Catasauqua, Weaversville, Bethlehem, Packerton, Allentown, Schnecksville, Neffs, Lehighton, Bests, Palmerton, Laceyville, Hokendauqua, Guthsville, Siegersville, Ironton, Treichlers, Walnutport, Slatington, Patterson, N.J., Mickleys, New York City, Milport, Slatedale and Pennsville.
“Dr. Haff will have charge of the surgical department. The
building is to be completed in four months.
“Dr. Haff not only deserves the commendations of the people of this community for the operation of this splendid humanitarian enterprise, but he is receiving
congratulations from the whole area.”
The hospital would eventually be run by another hospital for a short period of time. Many of our readers recall when it was the Northampton Medical Center.
Today, it serves as the administrative office for the Northampton Area School District. What will be the future of this historic landmark, which has faithfully served our area for so many years?

Northampton School District holds Act 34 Hearing to discuss proposed Route 329 Elementary school
By SAVANNAH BROWNOn Thursday, December 8, Northampton School District held their Act 34 Hearing, which was required by the Public School Code of 1949 in relation to the construction of a new elementary school and education center (commonly called the administrative center) at the Route 329 and Seemsville Road location that was acquired by the district in 1995.
Back in October, the Northampton School Board approved a resolution that authorized a maximum project cost of the elementary school and education center for $473,406,193, and a maximum building construction cost of $44,707,536.
The proposed elementary school and education center is the third leg of the district’s Capital Plan, whereas the first leg of the plan was to build a new middle school, and the second leg of the plan was to build the new Lehigh Elementary School, both of which have now been completed.
This part of the capital plan also involves the consideration of four existing buildings in the district: the Franklin building, which is the kindergarten center and was built
in 1907; the Washington building, which is currently home to the district’s technology center and was built in 1904; the district administration building, which was built in 1922; and Moore Elementary, which was built in 1958.
This proposed two-story elementary school and education center would replace all four of those existing buildings and would account for the projected enrollment influx of 1,800 homes being built in the Northampton area within the next 10 years. This proposal will also help alleviate overcrowding at Franklin Elementary, which is at capacity, and also at Siegfried Elementary where some students are taught in hallways due to a lack of space.
The new elementary school will have a capacity of 700 students and the projected enrollment in the two or three years it takes to complete the project will be approximately 525 students.
The proposed building of the elementary school and education center as well as the closing of the four aforementioned buildings is what the school board previously decided upon in October. This decision will also allow Moore
Elementary to remain open for limited community use. However, the district is still in the planning stages, so it is not currently known what parts of the building will remain open, and thus require renovations.
The district identified the goal will be to maximize safety and security, so there will also be separate bus and parent drop-off areas, especially since more parents have been dropping off their children at school instead of having them ride the bus due to Covid. As a result, this will be accounted for in the driveway lengths of the pick up/ drop off areas.
D’Huy Engineering, Inc. President Arif Fazil expressed one of the biggest cost functions of the project will be site work. However, a lot of the site infrastructure nec-

mainly becoming a paid profession, which has led to increased staff shortages, especially because it takes a lot of work to keep up with courses and continuing education in order to remain up to date with training.
Maria expressed that in EMS, personnel have to bring their “A game” every single day because the community is relying on them.
“There is no place for mediocrity in healthcare. We have to raise that bar every day. What was good enough for today isn’t going to be good enough for tomorrow. We have to keep educating, training, and doing better.”
Maria also shared that most people think they are just ambulance drivers, but in the back of an ambulance, EMS personnel are by themselves, taking care of a patient at their worst critical time without all the resources that a hospital emergency room would have, and having to decide what their treatment is going to be.
“You have to be a mediator at times, have a cool head, be a quick thinker, a problem solver, and look out for the safety of your partner,” said Maria.
EMS can be a challenging ca-
reer field, and not just because of low funds. For Maria, she recalls how challenging it has been any time a child’s life is involved and any time she responded to calls for accidents from things that could have been avoided, such as when someone was texting while driving, when individuals were not wearing seatbelts, and overdoses, which are all potentially preventable accidents. For Joe, he recalls challenging calls as an EMT such as handling major accidents and now having to become an employer as president, which requires dealing with employees and managing different personalities. Ryan also recalls the difficult calls that first responders face on a daily basis, but he also finds being away from his family for extended shifts to be especially challenging.
Although there are many challenging moments for EMS workers, the rewarding moments far outweigh them. For instance, Maria remembers a cardiac arrest save that she responded to in 1990 where the person was very young. Then three years ago, she got a call from the person’s family that the person had passed away. However, instead of being sad, they were thankful for the second chance she had given their father, which allowed him to see his children and grandchildren grow up. Maria also recalls the times she has received phone calls that her staff did an excellent job, which makes her immensely proud of their hard work and dedication. She boasts that this year alone, “Northampton Regional EMS had 15 cardiac arrests saves, which is phenomenal!”
Joe shares that helping the community and giving back is the most rewarding part of his job. He also beamed about East Allen EMS finally being able to purchase a third ambulance (Unit 4683), which they had needed for a long time. Joe explains that he is very proud to have been able to accomplish this under his presidency because it allows East Allen EMS to serve the citizens of its township more efficiently, which is the greatest reward.
Ryan divulges that the most rewarding thing about his job is being able to help people during the worst moments of their lives.
“Not only am I there to provide medical care, but I am also a mentor and a shoulder to cry on if needed,” Ryan shares. He also goes on to say how proud he is to be a great role model for his son and to show him that “one of the most important things you can do in life is to help someone in need.”
When asked about what advice they would give to someone who is thinking of becoming or is just starting out as an EMT or paramedic, Maria states, “This is the absolute best career you could ever choose. You’ll either love it or you’ll hate it because it’s very trying, and you have to constantly evolve and keep raising the bar.”
Joe’s advice is to not give up
and to stick with it even though it can be very difficult.
Ryan’s advice is to: “Never stop learning and always remain humble. Take all the constructive criticism you can and become the best medical provider you can be.”
Although these hometown heroes may think of what they do as first responders simply as their job, the hard work, sacrifice, and dedication that they put into serving their communities does not go unnoticed.

essary for the building construction has already been completed, such as the improvement of roadways, the addition of stop lights, utilities, and all of the grading for stormwater management. Therefore, development will focus on the site development of the building itself, driveways, and roadways coming off of the relocated Seemsville Road.
The project is anticipated to be competitively bid in the spring of 2023 through the public bid process with a minimum of four prime contractors. Then, the
construction will begin in the summer of 2023 and will take approximately two years until completion.
The district will utilize a wraparound debt service structure to take advantage of a drop off in old debt service, so when the older debts are paid off, that money will be freed up in the budget and dedicated to the new debt service for the project, which will minimize the millage impact from the project.
Additionally, there are some indirect cost savings anticipated as a result of the project completion that are related to professional personnel and support personnel with a total annual reduction of $990,000.
The overall millage equivalent of the project is anticipated to be funded in three bond issues. The millage from the three bonds is estimated to be 2.72 mills minus the indirect cost savings, which equate to 0.83 mills per year, for a total millage impact of 1.89 mills.
Residents had quite a few questions regarding the project. One resident voiced the lanes on Route 329 and Seemsville Road do not look big enough to be handling the proposed 1,600 tractor trailers that will be utilizing those roadways from the proposed Jaindl warehouse compound plus all of the buses that will be bussing children to and from the proposed elementary school, especially because traffic already backs up at the intersection now.
Fazil responded that the traffic analysis done for those particular lanes was done separately but was reviewed by the township and PennDOT and met all of their criteria. Fazil added that the traffic studies that have been done show that the traffic light and stacking space that is provided are more than adequate to address the traffic flows.
Residents also wanted to know
why the current buildings that the district plans to close are too old to renovate. Superintendent Joseph Kovalchik explained that a cost analysis was done compared to building new and the difference in costs would only be approximately $1,000,000. Kovalchik added that building the new elementary school would also assuage requirements for enrollment and space needs.
Questions were also raised regarding the 20 projected classrooms for special needs students and whether this will be enough classrooms to account for the 19% of students in the district that are in special education. Jay Clough from KCBA Architects stated that this would be enough to account for special education students and will be distributed fully throughout the facility to provide flexibility.
Additionally, questions regarding the number of pre-K classrooms were asked due to the closing of Moore Elementary and Franklin Elementary. The proposed elementary school will only have five pre-K classrooms, which would essentially only cover the capacity of children that attend Franklin Elementary. Superintendent Kovalchik responded that the five pre-K classrooms will cover district students only. The flex spaces that are proposed on the site plan will also allow for changes to be made each year depending on the needs of the students, but will accommodate special education, pre-K, and other grades.
Last, Superintendent Kovalchik expressed that the district will keep residents informed throughout the process and encouraged everyone to visit the district website for updates.
More information about the proposed elementary school, education center and the Act 34 Hearing can be found at nasdschools.org.

1 dead In Fatal Lehigh Township Crash
Submitted by CHIEF SCOTT FOGELOn Thursday, December 22 at 9:14 p.m., Lehigh Township Police Department was dispatched to a vehicle crash into a house on Riverview Drive (State Route 145), just north of East Valley Drive. Police arrived to find a two-vehicle crash, with one vehicle into a house in the 1100 block of Riverview Drive.
A silver colored Saturn was traveling northbound and collided with a white Chevrolet Traverse that was traveling southbound. After the collision, the Saturn continued across the southbound lane and struck a house.
The Traverse was driven by John Carrie of Lehigh Township and also occupied by a child. Both occupants of the Traverse were wearing seatbelts and did not require medical treatment.
The driver, 63-year-old Gregory Mertz from Carbon County and the only occupant of the Saturn, was deceased at the scene. The seatbelt was not in use in this vehicle. The Saturn sustained heavy damage from the collision and the front airbags were deployed. The Northampton County Coroner’s Office was contacted and responded to the crash.
Riverview Drive (SR 145) was closed for over four hours during the crash investigation.
The crash remains under investigation. Lehigh Township Police were assisted by Lehigh Township Fire and Fire Police, and Northampton Regional EMS.

Northampton County adds Bodnarczuk Preserve to park System
Submitted by BECKY BARTLETT
Lamont G. McClure and the Division of Parks & Recreation announce the acquisition of the County’s 22nd Park. On December 20, Northampton County officially accepted a land donation from the Mauser Family, permanently conserving 41.06 acres in Allen Township. This is the third new preserve acquired since 2019. With this acquisition, the County Park system now totals 2,262 acres.
The donated section is named the Bodnarczuk Preserve in hon-
or of the Mauser’s Ukrainian maternal grandparents who originally farmed the land and owned a grocery store nearby. It was a long-time goal of the Mauser Family to donate the majority of their land to Northampton County to conserve the stream corridor, woodlands, rolling terrain, and steep slopes of their property in perpetuity.
“We are thankful for the generations of family who were great stewards of this land and commend the Mauser brothers and their families for their commitment to conservation to retain the scenic greenway, geologic formations, and native riparian corridor in the Hokendauqua Creek Watershed,” says Lamont G. McClure.
The bargain sale price of $225,000 and donated value by the landowners of $675,000 is based on a fair market appraisal to retain the rural character of the land and deter warehouse proliferation. This acquisition was made possible through the Northampton County Livable Landscapes Grant Program which supports open space, environmentally sensitive land, and greenway goals.
“The Bodnarczuk Preserve will be maintained with a priority towards environmental preservation in line with the desire of the wishes of the Mauser family,” says Bryan S. Cope, Superintendent of Parks & Recreation. “Beginning in 2023, the County will continue to work with the Mauser family, state agencies, Allen Township, land conservancies, watershed associates and
local schools to provide access, environmental education and research, restoration practices and access for all individuals to enjoy the property.”
The Bodnarczuk Preserve includes mature woodlands, rolling terrain, vegetated riparian areas, geologic formations, grass pathways, small pond, agricultural fields, steep slopes, and the Hokendauqua Creek. Scenic views and abundant wildlife habitat exist along the riparian areas, rock outcropments, greenway, and woodlands. The Livable Landscapes Program provides the resources for the preservation and management of these properties.
“Our efforts to preserve these lands allow the County to manage stormwater naturally in our County park system, reducing the impacts of floods, erosion, and sedimentation due to the vulnerabilities of climate change,” says Sherry Acevedo, Conservation Coordinator.
