Nazareth Borough Council approves Final 2024 operating Budget; awards Volunteer, employee And veteran of the Year

By SAVANNAH BROWN The Nazareth Borough Council met Monday, December 4 with several important resolutions and discussion of the final operating budget.

First, council unanimously approved three resolutions for the borough’s volunteer, employee and veteran of the year.

Jenny Swanker was honored as the borough’s volunteer of the year, Public Works Superintendent Keith Knecht was honored as the borough’s employee of the year and Council President Daniel Chiavaroli was honored as the borough’s veteran of the year.

Upon receiving their Northampton County awards, Knecht was praised for his leadership and guidance by the rest of the Public Works crew, who all came to celebrate his achievement.

During new business, the following public property agenda items were unanimously approved by council: the request of Nazareth Youth Soccer for use of Essroc Fields for the 2024 spring soccer practices,

games and clinics from March 20, 2024 through July 1, 2024; the request of Middle School Nazareth Baseball for use of the field in the park from the middle of February through the middle of May 2024; the request of Nazareth Area Youth Baseball & Softball to post two signs in the Circle for their spring 2023 signups from January 1 through February 5; and direction for the borough engineer to draw up specifications for public bid for the epoxy treatment of the firehouse’s floor.

Under finance, council approved a “final” 2024 borough operating budget with a one mill tax increase, with the borough’s real estate tax rate for 2024 being 17 mills, as well as the borough’s budget resolution for 2024 calling for a one mill tax increase and establishing a real estate tax rate of 17 mills for all of 2024. The borough’s updated total real estate tax assessment for all properties as of November 1 is $125,515,000.

Allen Township Supervisors Discuss Willowbrook Road Bridge closure and Fire incentive program

By SAVANNAH BROWN The Allen Township Board of Supervisors met Tuesday, November 28 with a brief agenda.

During unfinished business, the board unanimously granted a financial security and time extension request to Tim Livengood for the Stone Ridge Meadows development for the completion of Stone Ridge Loop Road through Dec. 1, 2024. The applicant expects that phase three of the residential project will be approved and secured by that time and they have provided a bond through that period of time.

The board also unanimously approved authorization to solicit bids for the sale of various township equipment through Municbid, including a 2003 CAT 430D backhoe with broom/ bucket attachments, a trailer, a 1987 Case International tractor and miscellaneous liquid storage tanks and a few other items such as plows and other minor things.

Next, supervisors unanimously approved a memorandum that included minor adjustments to township personnel policy sections 3.1 – Hours of Work, which will provide Public Works employees with two paid 15-minute rest periods per shift, and 4.14 – Inclement Weather, which addresses limited work duties from home during inclement weather and is something the township was already been implementing

but are just now moving forward with the formality of the process.

In other business, the board discussed possibly implementing a fire incentive program for volunteer firefighters that would provide those who qualify with a financial incentive in the form of credits against Northampton County real estate taxes. In recent months, Northampton County began implementing a program, which they call the Active Volunteer Real Estate Tax Credit Ordinance.

Not to be confused with payment for services, the credit is an incentive that is in response to the declining trends and numbers of volunteer firefighters and to encourage others to become involved as active volunteers.

Another incentive discussed was the reimbursement of gas mileage for volunteers living outside the township. Additionally, the county has implemented the ordinance, but neighboring municipalities have not yet begun providing the incentive within their fire departments either, so the board must develop their own criteria to implement the credits if they end up choosing to do so.

Per the county ordinance, each individual meeting the eligibility requirements will receive a real estate tax credit in the amount of the real estate tax paid by the volunteer, not to exceed $250 each year. Therefore, the credit

is based on the millage rate of the municipality where the volunteer resides and is not a fixed amount, so the maximum credit they may receive is up to $250.

Vice Chairman Gary Behler felt that this incentive would be unfair for individuals whose property may not be assessed as high as others, so some individuals would receive more than others.

Other supervisors agreed with Behler that there should be a cap on the credit amount that volunteers can receive and there was also discussion of considering a proposal for a flat rate and one for a cap, as well as the incorporation of gas mileage, so that they can assess which guidelines and criteria they prefer.

Although the ordinance only became effective within the last two months at the county level, eligible active volunteers from the 2023 tax year will be eligible for the real estate tax credit for the 2024 tax year since it is based on the previous year’s participation.

Hiya gang, only a little over two more weeks until Christmas, can you believe it? Santa runs and local tree lightings are in full swing. The rainy weather has forced a few different municipalities to reschedule their lightings; no snow yet though!..

There are lotsa festive events happening around town, including at the Roxy. They just featured a Carpenters Christmas on Sunday and this weekend the Pennsylvania Classical Ballet Academy will perform “The Nutcracker” on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The usual Christmas movie at the Roxy that’s free as long as you bring a donation to the food bank will be “Elf ” on December 12 and 13. Also, on the 17th they’re gonna have Frankie Valli hit songs and your favorite holiday classics… We’re real sorry to learn of the passing of Charles McIlhaney Jr. We always looked forward to receiving his poems and short stories, especially his yearly Christmas entries. Did you know he came up with the official slogan for the

Did ya hear that the Klecknersville Rangers Fire Co. is being investigated? No other information has been made available, just that an investigation involving the fire company has been opened…

Speaking of fire companies, be aware, over the next few months there’s going to be more activity than usual at the Nazareth Firehouse, they’re replacing floors and such…I’ve got some food updates for ya. Galyean’s Deli in Northampton is gonna be moving over to where Northampton Seafood was and I heard they’re eventually going to sell some seafood too in addition to their usual delicious deli offerings. Daily Grind in Bath is going to be temporarily closed through the end of the year. Have you ever had their Point Phillip sandwich?

Delicious!...I heard that the PNC Bank in Bath is gonna be closing in 2024. Not sure what the plan is for the building after that. It’s tough when the banks in towns close, especially for the people who need to walk to ‘em…Of course we gotta take a second to talk about the Eagles. Township Manager Ilene M. Eckhart and Solicitor B. Lincoln Treadwell were given direction from the board to work on a set of guidelines for the incentive.

No decision was made at this time.

In other news, the board discussed the upcoming closure of the Willowbrook Road bridge next to the Wayne A. Grube Memorial Park at 1200 Willowbrook Rd. based on the upcoming utility relocation and reconstruction of the bridge.

As a result, Willowbrook Road will be temporarily closed from Monday, December 11 through Friday, December 15 at the intersection with West Bullshead Road due to waterline utility work related to the bridge replacement project. Then, the bridge will open back up until the project begins sometime in January and will remain closed most likely through October.

Next, supervisors unanimously approved the authorization for two seasonal call-in road crew applicants for winter maintenance to be placed on standby that may be called in if the winter ends up being a very busy season for the Public Works Department.

Last, the board unanimously approved a draft offer of employment to a candidate for an equipment operator/utility position. The individual will be announced at the next township meeting.

The next Allen Township Board of Supervisors meeting will be held Tuesday, December 12 at 6 p.m. in the Allen Township Fire Company building, located at 3530 Howertown Rd. All subsequent 2024 public township meetings will be held in the Allen Township municipal building, located at 4714 Indian Trail Rd. at 6 p.m. due to renovations at the fire station.

proved the following finance items: an ordinance establishing salaries for all borough employees and public officials, and sets a real estate tax rate of 17 mills for 2024 to be known as the Annual Tax and Levy Ordinance; the enrollment of the borough in the State Unemployment Solvency Fund for 2024, which removes the borough’s obligation to pay for layoffs and reduced scheduling unemployment claims from other employers, although the borough is still responsible for its own layoffs and hourly reductions; payment of the final Clifton, Larsen, Allen invoice for non-uniformed pension plan accounting for 2023, with the invoice total being $803.25; and direction to invoice the Nazareth Borough Municipal Authority for their share of the non-uniformed pension plan accounting for 2023, with their 45.5% share this year being $365.48.

Under police items, council unanimously approved the fulltime work status for Officer Austin Signarovitz following satisfactory completion of his one-year probationary period.

Colondo provided the monthly police report for November, which included 347 total police activity/calls for service, with 17 crimes reported and investigated, eight criminal arrests made, two drug-related crimes, four Part 1 offenses, 135 traffic citations issued, 96 warnings issued, one reportable traffic accident and 12 nonreportable traffic accidents.

Moreover, police officers spent 26 hours in district justice, juvenile and county court, 208 hours were spent on training and 120 hours were spent on FTO training.

Throughout November, Parking Enforcement also had 299 parking enforcement officer violations and 100 officer issued violations for a combined total of 399 parking tick-

ets issued for the month.

In other news, council made a motion to acknowledge receipt of the grant proceeds from the 2022 Northampton County Public Safety Grant in the amount of $6,200 to subsidize the purchase of three Motorola radios for the fire chiefs at a total cost of $12,411.

Under law, council unanimously approved the following motions: to designate Quadrant #3 for rental inspections during 2024 (170 units) and direct the inspectors from Barry Isett Engineering to do the work again; advertisement of a resolution to adjust the borough’s ward boundaries to balance the population in each ward based on the latest U.S. Census with a small section from Wards 1 and 2 being shifted into Ward 3 for balance; and to advertise an ordinance revising the borough’s parking ordinance to establish parking setbacks of 22 feet on each corner of the Belvidere and Whitfield streets intersection.

Next, council unanimously approved a motion directing the secretary to advertise that Christmas trees will be picked up on Thursday, December 28, Thursday, January 5 and Thursday, January 11. The advertisement will also contain information for residents to

Ethel M. Florey

Ethel M. Florey, 92, of Upper Nazareth Twp. passed away on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2023 at Country Meadows Nursing Center - Bethlehem Twp. She was the wife of the late Chester C. Florey who passed in 2014. Ethel was born in Point Phillips on May 25, 1931 to the late Peter and Elsie (Newhard) Huth. She is a graduate of Liberty High School – Bethlehem.

Ethel had many hobbies including gardening (especially flowers), stained glass art, sewing, various crafts, bowling, modern square dancing (including local, state and national dance conventions) and camping with her husband. She traveled and visited all 50 states of the good old U.S.A., Canada and Australia. After retirement she spent most of her winters in Florida.

Ethel was an active member of Holy Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church (Moorestown) Bath, Pa. She served on the church plan-

ning and building committee for Holy Cross. She was a former member of the Bethany Alter Guild and former Sunday School teacher for many years. Ethel knitted and crocheted prayer shawls for sick and shut-ins. She was a compassionate and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved her family very much.

In her own words Ethel wrote, “Thanks be to the Lord, I had a great life!”

John Timothy Fogel

John Timothy Fogel, 74, husband of Jennifer (Russell) passed away at Orono Commons on Dec. 1, 2023. He was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania on Sept. 29, 1949, to George C. and Caroline (Deemer) Fogel.

John grew up in Chapman Quarries, the smallest borough in Pa., and often shared stories of his antics and experiences attending a one-room schoolhouse. John graduated from Northampton High School in 1967. Following high school, he worked for Harold Kucker Roofing installing slate roofs. In 1972, he proudly joined the U.S. Navy serving as a Seabee in both Vietnam and Antarctica. After his military service, John returned to the Lehigh Valley where he and his first wife Susan welcomed their daughters Jessica and Kathryn. During this time, he began his career with the U.S. Postal Service. He retired as Postmaster of the Old Town Post Office after 37 years of service.

John was a talker. Anywhere he went, he met someone he knew and could spend hours chatting about nothing. This trait also served him well with his many volunteer pursuits, including Meals on Wheels and Literacy Volunteers, as well as his willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. John was Past President of the Old Town Rotary Club.

John enjoyed being outdoors, whether tinkering in the yard, taking his dog Sadie for walks on the University of Maine Trails, or riding his bike.

On Aug. 4, 2007, John married Jennifer (Russell) St. Peter.

During their 16 years of marriage, they enjoyed traveling with Viking River Cruises, exploring China, Russia, the Rhine, the Seine and the Danube.

Just prior to the COVID pandemic, John was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. He was able to stay home until April 2022 when he became a resident at Orono Commons on the Homestead Unit. His charm quickly made him a favorite with both staff and residents alike.

Paul Edgar Graver

Paul Edgar Graver, 88, a lifelong resident of Moore Township, peacefully passed away at his home in Klecknersville on Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2023. He was the loving husband of Ruth E. “Dolly” (Kleintop) Graver. Paul and Dolly celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary on June 13.

Born in Cross Roads, Klecknersville, Paul was the son of the late Claud R. and Minnie J. (Bensing) Graver. He attended Northampton High School.

Paul was a member of the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union and worked in various garment factories in the area for many years, before retiring from Gino & Jack Sportswear in Bath.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Paul was a member of Salem United Church of Christ, Moorestown.

Survivors: In addition to his loving wife, Dolly, he will be dearly missed by sons, Paul A. Graver and wife, Julie, of Walnutport, and Terry E. Graver and wife, Christy, of Klecknersville; three

Andrew M. Kirlick

Andrew M. Kirlick, 71, of Nazareth Pike, Lower Nazareth Twp., Bethlehem, died peacefully Thursday morning, Nov. 30, 2023, at Gracedale County Home, Nazareth. He was the husband of Donna K. (Fehnel) Kirlick since April 25, 1992.

Born in Bethlehem, he was a son of the late Andrew and Olive (Shupp) Kirlick.

Andrew was employed in the quality control/inspection dept. of the Phoenix Forge Co., Catasauqua for many years, later, retiring as custodian for Phillips Feed and Grain Co., Easton. He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hecktown. A 1970 graduate of the Nazareth High School, he later served in the Army, Vietnam Era, and achieved rank of E-4. Andrew was a member and past bartender of the East Lawn Vol Fire Co., Nazareth. He enjoyed playing darts and was also a member of the American Legion, Nazareth Post.

Charles E. McIlhaney, Jr.

Charles E. McIlhaney, Jr., 77, of Lower Nazareth Twp., quit smoking on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2023.

He passed away at Lehigh Valley Hospital - Cedar Crest, Allentown. Born on Aug. 8, 1946, and raised in Bath, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Hilda E. (Miller) McIlhaney, Sr. Charles and his wife, the former Charlotte Azzalina, were together for 33 years. They were married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Bath. A 1964 graduate of Northampton High School, he worked for over 20 years at Bethlehem Steel Co., and later as a delivery driver for Fogel's Fuel Co. He was a member of Christ Church of Bath, U.C.C. He enjoyed the outdoors, nature, dogs, campfires, riding motorcycles and throwing horseshoes. He also liked to write articles, short stories and poetry; some of which appeared in The Home News.

Survivors: He will be missed by his family including his loving

Russell D. Samuels

Russell D. Samuels, 79 of Bath, Pa., passed away on Saturday, Nov. 25, 2023, at Gracedale Nursing Home in Nazareth, Pa. Born March 2, 1944 in Bethlehem, Pa., he was the son of the late Russell E. Samuels and the late Fae C. (Christine) Samuels Heske. He was the husband of Kathryn R. (Seiple) Samuels with whom he shared 54 years of marriage this past June 14, 2023.

Russell was last employed as a Salesman and Route driver for Teufel Distributing, Schnecksville, Pa. until retiring in 2001.

Prior to that he managed the former Seiple Farm market on Route 329 for several years, before that he worked for M.W. Wood, Allentown as manager of College Cafeterias, and prior to that he worked for W.T. Grant, as their restaurant Manager at the Lehigh Shopping Center, Allentown. Russell attended St. John's United Church of Christ, Northampton.

This is the first stage production to take place in the newly opened facility. What was once St. Paul Lutheran Church on Berwick Street on Easton's southside has been transformed into a community cultural arts center. The center also includes after-school programs, art, music and dance classes as well as sports activities and programs. They just opened this past summer with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Sing For America Productions was founded in 2011 by the Gilbert Family. Every member of the family is either in the show and/ or works behind the scenes of every production. They produce semi-professional Broadway style musicals using actors of varied backgrounds, ages and levels of experience. Some of the actors cast in the show have appeared on Broadway, some in local Freddy Awards, and some are average everyday people and students.

Several actors performing in the show are from the local area including 8-year-old David Carmen of Moore Township. This is his fifth show performing with Sing For America. He appeared in the two shows performed at Moore Elementary ("Lion King" and "Madagascar'') as well as last year's Christmas musical "Narnia" and this past summer's show, "Disney's The Descendants" which was held at Moravian College (University).

Monies raised from the stage productions, which have been over $62,000, have already been donated to Lehigh Valley charities in the arts and the nation's military.

"The Wizard of Oz” has partnered with the Easton Winter Village. A few of the actors from the musical performed in the opening ceremonies to kick off the event. Shows will continue for the next two weekends, Dec 8-10 and December 15-17.

By SAVANNAH BROWN The Bath Borough Council met Monday, December 4 for a bittersweet meeting.

First, the Bath Republican Association decided that they wanted to help the borough’s Master Park Plan after it was suggested in previous months to plant a wildflower buffer/rose garden along Fireman’s Field on Monocacy Creek where the floodplain area exists, since the borough is unable to build a permanent structure there.

To help with the project, the Bath Republican Association asked council to accept a $1,500 donation as “seed money” to kick off the beginning of the Master Park Plan implementation.

Along with council, Mayor Fiorella Mirabito thanked the Bath Republican Association for their generous contribution and expressed that never, in all the years she has lived in the borough, has any organization given as much to the borough’s park system as the Bath Republican Association.

Then, Mayor Mirabito shifted gears and extended her sincere gratitude toward Council President Pro Tem Barry Fenstermaker and Councilwoman Phyllis Andrews since it was their last official meeting as council members due to their terms ending this month.

Mayor Mirabito thanked Fenstermaker and Andrews for all of the “incredible” time that they have put into the borough as both residents and council members, and for their selflessness throughout the years as they volunteered for every event that herself and Vice President Frank Hesch organized. She then shared a poem that reminded her of both Fenstermaker and Andrews.

Mayor Mirabito and the rest of council thanked Fenstermaker and Andrews for their service to

the borough and wished them and their loved ones well with continued good health.

In other business, Kathy RephHayes, owner of Hayes Flowers, announced that Yuletide in Bath will have festive events all day this year, which will be on Saturday, December 16 and includes the annual Santa Run hosted by the Bath Vol. Fire Dept. from 9:30 a.m. to noon, photos with Santa at the northern portion of Ciff Cowling Field (206 E. Main St.) from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., the Bath Lions Club Candy Cane Hunt at the same location at 2 p.m., live ice sculpting at Monocacy Creek Park (241 W. Main St.) from 3 to 5 p.m., fire pits with s’mores stations also at the northern portion of Ciff Cowling Field from 1 to 3 p.m. and at Monocacy Creek Park from 3 to 5 p.m., as well as holiday specials throughout several borough businesses, with a note to stay tuned to social media for any changes due to the weather.

In continuing with the spirit of gratitude, Mayor Mirabito thanked everyone that had any part in helping with the tree lighting ceremony on Sunday, December 3, which held out through the rain and didn’t seem to dampen the holiday cheer as this year’s event turned out to be even bigger than last year’s.

Then, President Michele Ehrgott expressed thanks to all of the borough employees and council members, recognizing them for their continued dedication, and gave special thanks to Fenstermaker and Andrews for everything they have done for the borough over the years.

Lehigh Township Supervisors Consider new meeting layout

By LAURA KLOTZ During the Lehigh Township Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, November 28, two resolutions were presented for the board’s consideration. The first concerned adjustments to the budget with regards to the fire tax, as discussed at the previous meeting; the second gives the board chairman and township manager the authority to sign documents to apply for an LSA grant for $230,000. Both resolutions were approved for adoption.

In an executive session, the board had discussed whether to approve Police Chief Scott Fogel’s proposed plan to sponsor two recruits at the police academy. The board voted to authorize Fogel to extend an offer of

employment to the candidates upon their successful graduation from the academy, provided that they pass the drug and mental health checks. The offer will require the candidates to remain employed with Lehigh Township for a minimum of five years; if they leave the township’s employment before the end of that term, they will have to repay the township for some or all of the academy costs.

Vice-chairman Cynthia Miller presented the board with a suggested new layout for meeting agendas. She said she had been contemplating ways to streamline the meetings, and offered the proposed agenda changes in order to keep the board focused on current events. mentary after each agenda item by placing public comments earlier in the meeting; public comments would be limited to discussing agenda items only, and each commenter would have a maximum of three minutes of talking time. Board members would listen to the comments and respond later in the meeting. A lengthy discussion was held on the subject, with many present offering objections to this proposed format. Board member Gerald Pritchard reminded everyone that the audience comments at the November 14 were what persuaded him to change his vote on the fire tax, stating that it was a good example of why the commentary is so important.

Township Solicitor David Backenstoe was asked to weigh in on the legality of the matter.

He explained that the board can have public comments on the agenda items, but the agenda would then be required to be extremely specific in order to keep the residents informed of exactly what the board was discussing. Public comment, in his opinion, needs to take place at the end of the meeting in addition to the beginning. If Miller’s plan were to be implemented, the specific agenda must be made available ahead of meetings and copies of all documents would have to be made available to everyone attending the meeting. Board member David Hess asked what they would need to do if there were not enough copies of documents available to everyone who showed up, to which Backenstoe stressed that everything would need to be available on the township website at least 24 hours in advance.

One audience member reminded the board that not everyone is able to read the agenda and other items on the internet, and thus would be unable to prepare for a meeting.

Paul Nikisher stated that the proposal limits the audience’s ability to seek clarification on issues, because they don’t always have all of the information that the board has, and that they would need to be able to view every single document and picture that the board sees. Miller said that the plan is to place monitors in the room to allow the attendees to see what the board sees.

Chairman Michael Jones agreed that limiting the time in which people can speak makes sense, but he does not want the public comment at the beginning of the meeting. Miller said that her proposal was only meant as a starting point for the board to discuss the matter and consider options. It was agreed to table the matter for further review.

Township Manager Alice Rehrig reported that she is looking into the property of 450 Walnut Dr. in Pennsville, as it was supposed to go up for sheriff’s sale but did not. The township has a number of liens against the abandoned property so she has

Katherine Mack inquired as to whether the open positions on the zoning and planning commissions are being posted. They played at Freedom on December 6, will host Emmaus on December 8, and then travel to East Stroudsburg South on December 12.

The Nazareth Girls Basketball team went to Hazleton High School on December 1 for a tournament where they beat Abington Heights, then lost to Hazleton on December 2. The girls hosted Freedom on December 6, will be at Emmaus on December 8, and then will host East Stroudsburg South on December 12.

The Nazareth Wrestling team went to Cumberland Valley on December 1 and 2 for a tournament and finished in third place.

They will host Easton on December 7 for Alumni Night and then host Freedom on December 13.

The Nazareth Swimming team opened their season on December 5 at home versus Dieruff, and next will host Whitehall on December 12.

All home swim meets are at 4 p.m. at Nazareth Middle School and are also free of charge.

Twelve Neighs Of Christmas: Ho ho horses and Holiday fun for everyone

By SAVANNAH BROWN On Sunday, December 3, Nazareth “neigh”borhood’s Equi-librium farm and their herd of therapy horses held their first Twelve Neighs of Christmas community event.

In light of the rain, over 300 guests in high, holiday spirits moseyed in from the mud and the muck to partake in the funfilled festivities inside Equi-librium’s riding arena and barns.

Children rushed and raced to

partake in the games and crafts as their laughter filled the arena with joy and excitement.

The event was free to the public, but tickets and wristbands could be purchased for activities and attractions inspired by “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” which included 12 drummers drumming face painting, 11 pipers piping Christmas cookie decorating, 10 lords a-leaping hobby horse obstacle course, nine ladies dancing dance party with miniature horses, eight maids a-milking hot cocoa bar, seven swans a-swimming duck game with prizes, six geese a-laying holiday crafts, five golden rings ring toss with prizes, four calling birds duck feeding, three French hens Christmas carriage photos, two turtle doves photos with mini horses, and a partridge in a pear tree horseshoe and snowflake ornament crafts.

Thanks to the community, Equi-librium was able to give free wristbands to children from The Children’s Home of Easton, Boys & Girls Club of Bethlehem, and the Pediatric Cancer Foundation of the Lehigh Valley.

During the festive frenzy, children of all ages from one to 92 enjoyed visits from Santa, Mrs. Claus and the Grinch while meandering through Santa’s Workshop craft and vendor marketplace, which included vendors such as décor made by Brett and Kim, Karen Graffman’s handmade stock-

Guests could also make their way to the stables where Star the miniature horse greeted everyone at the door in his reindeer costume, and Chef, Eddie, April, Guinness, Jackie, Timber, Sassy, Ricky, Sam, Rosie, Libby, Faith, Lito, George, Sonny, and Buford demanded lunch as they

ate up all of the attention from guests from the privacy of their own stalls throughout the day.

All-in-all it was quite the exciting day for both the children and the horses.

Caroline Malmad is all smiles as she raises her glass in celebration of her 100th birthday.

Submitted by SAMANTHA DIX Two residents of Traditions of Hanover recently celebrated their milestone birthdays together on November 29.

Betty Bartron, 104, and Caroline Malmad, 100, enjoyed a joyous party surrounded by family and friends at the retirement living community in Hanover Township.

Bartron, a former seamstress from Bethlehem, has a passion for dancing and gardening. At

her age, she expressed that she feels wonderful and shared simple advice for achieving a long life.

“Just live!” she explained.

Malmad, originally from New York, is an avid reader and travel enthusiast. She was particularly fond of the party, which included long-distance family members from Texas and California.

She shares her wisdom to living a long life: “Do good things.”

In addition to Bartron and Malmad, two other centenarians call Traditions home.

Leading the attack for Dryland were Nate Phares 7 for 13 (HR), Butch Silfies 6 for 13, Karen Krome 5 for 12, Shawn Sigley 5 for 13, and Trevor Zavacki 4 for 11 (hitting the cycle for the night). Tom Dormieda was 5 for 12 and Jeff Hoffert with a HR for Emmanuel.

In another ‘sweep’ we find Blessed Trinity beating St. Paul’s by scores of 3-1, 2-1 and 4-1 in 10 innings. Top hitters for Blessed Trinity were Dan Halteman 9 for 13 and Chuck Crisafi 7 for 13, while Dave Clark was 5 for 12 for St. Paul’s.

In other action, after losing the opener 3-2 to Star of Bethlehem, Farmersville came back to win 5-1 and 2-1.
