Northampton Clergy Members Granted free Access to Borough’s Rec center By KERI LINDENMUTH

of the Schiavone subdivision property to the Moore Township Board of Supervisors meeting at 7 p.m. on February 4 at the Moore Township municipal building. The concerns were in regards to the Highway Occupancy Permit (HOP) for the property. The main reasons for those concerns were the power line height and the amount of water that collects at the proposed entrance of the subdivision. It was brought to the attention of the Moore Township Planning Commission that the power lines may not be high enough for the expected farm equipment to be used through the proposed entrance. Moore Township Engineer Kevin Horvath had the opportunity to go out to the property and inspect the situation.

During their meeting on Thursday, February 6, the Northampton Borough Council voted to grant free rec center membership to active and retired members of the borough’s clergy. The request was made by Councilman Anthony Lopsonzski, Sr. “I have been approached by several clerics who have asked this question,” he explained. “They take care of the people of the borough.” However, he expressed hesitation because the borough’s police department does not currently have free membership. The fire department and non uniformed employees, on the other hand, do. Borough Manager LeRoy Brobst said membership was part of the bargaining agreement for non-uniformed employees. Councilman Keith Piescienski said the fire department barely uses their free passes, and that police would not use them if they had them. He said members of the police department would be heckled while exercising. Lopsonzski, Sr. also expressed hesitation in regards to family members of the clergy. He wondered whether they should also be granted free membership. Council was against this request. “That would add a lot of people to the list,” said Councilman Thomas Gehringer. Borough approved the motion, with the amendment that families would have to pay for membership. In other news, council voted to advertise Ordinance No. 1213. This ordinance would enable the borough to participate in the River Central Intermunicipal Agreement. The comprehensive plan would be carried out with

A 50-year salute (Originally published in 2004)

When I attended the Eckley Patch American Legion meeting in Bath, one topic on their agenda was quite amazing. The group agreed to pay the dues of any member with 50 years of consecutive membership at the post. I thought five or six people would qualify. The list is lengthy, showing the loyalty and dedication of these fine gentlemen to the Eckley Patch Post and the American Legion. Many are friends and neighbors. Hope no one has been omitted: Joseph Abraham Jr., 57 years; Joseph Ambrose, 51; Charles Asbath, 58; Lewis Borda, 58; Bertram Bickel, 59; Leo C. Bittenbender, 59; Angelo Christopher, 58; Arthur Diehl, Jr., 58; John A. Ford, 58; Robert Hunsicker, 56; Howard Jones, Jr., 58; Bertine Keefer, 58; Charles Kish,

“I visited the site and assessed the initial proposed driveway location,” Horvath said. “I walked along the front to determine if there were any other options or alternative locations, measured the wires and checked site distance. I am going to suggest we relocate the driveway to a subtle high point in the road. PennDOT constructed that swell on the side of the road and it drains toward a pipe and down to a park. Generally speaking, that spot should be the least impacted by wet conditions with a high point like that. That spot would give overhead clearance of 15 feet.” The planning commission is expected to discuss and decide if they will recommend moving forward on the HOP at their next meeting. The board of supervisors voted 3-0 to authorize David Backenstoe, township solicitor, to advertise the ordinance

for the NIXLE Agreement, an alert system to inform township residents of any emergencies. The ordinance is expected to be voted on at the March Board of Supervisors meeting. It was also approved 3-0 for Backenstoe to advertise an ordinance for the township to enter an agreement to allow Portnoff Law Associates to collect delinquent real estate taxes for the township going forward. “There was a lot of confusion when this came up,” Backenstoe said. “This is talking about delinquent real estate taxes. This does not affect anything your current tax collector is doing. She will still collect your taxes. She would still do duplicates and report taxes. The delinquent taxes however would be turned over to Portnoff as opposed to the county.” Lastly, the Historical Commission is still looking for one more active member. The Moore Township Board of Supervisors will meet again at 7 p.m. on March 3 at the township municipal building.

Morningstar Living announces Three properties Reviewed for Moore Twp. Partnership with East Stroudsburg University to Open Space Program By JASON KAMERY Three properties, the Jarinko, Smith and Silfies properties, were brought up for open space preservation consideration at the Moore Township Land and Environmental Protection Board meeting at 7 p.m. on Feb. 10. Motions were passed for the Jarinko and Smith properties to be reviewed by the township’s Board of Supervisors for the Open Space Preservation Program; a recommendation to use Wildlands Conservancy was made for both properties. A motion was also passed for the Silfies property to go before the Board of Supervisors with a recommendation to use Heritage Conservancy. The board also passed a motion for a recommendation to the Board of Supervisors to complete the fencing project at Schiavone Park. The fence would help delineate between the park and the farmlands.

Schiavone Park will also be receiving new trees. Public works will dig holes but the township will need help as far as the locations and planting of the trees. “We have a bunch of small trees that are coming in that have been ordered,” Chairman Robert Romano said. “We are looking at this for maybe an Earth Day project or maybe an Arbor Day project. We were also looking to hopefully get some volunteers. We can get some information out on Facebook. We think it would be a nice springtime project.” Lastly, the board is researching a Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) grant to possibly stock fish in the ponds at Schiavone Park. The Land and Environmental Protection Board will meet again at 7 p.m. on March 9 at the Moore Township Municipal Building.

Fair Districts To hold Informational Sessions In Lehigh Valley on Gerrymandering

Submitted by CARLA COLANGELO Fair Districts PA will host a series of informational sessions across the Lehigh Valley on gerrymandering and how to end the system that allows the drawing of districts to benefit one political party. Fair Districts, a project of the League of Women Voters, is a non-profit statewide organization that supports an impartial, transparent and accountable system for drawing boundaries for Congressional and state legislative seats. Currently, boundaries are drawn every 10 years after the latest Census is conducted to account for population changes. In Pennsylvania, the redistricting process for Congressional seats is controlled by the State General Assembly with the governor having veto power. State legislative districts are drawn by a five-member commission composed of the majority and minority leaders of the state House and Senate and a fifth member chosen by them. Fair Districts PA believes that both redistricting systems lead to gerrymandering because they give the controlling political party in Harrisburg the ability to draw boundaries that will virtually guarantee the election of party members. Fair Districts PA advocates for boundaries to be drawn by a commission of citizens, not elected officials. During the Lehigh Valley sessions, Fair District PA representatives will discuss the current system and proposed legislation to end gerrymandering. All sessions are free and open to the public. Information: carlacfairdistricts@gmail.com. The dates are as follows: Feb. 12: 7 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 424 Center St. Bethlehem. Feb. 19: 6 p.m., Northampton Area Library, 1615 Laubach Ave, Northampton. Feb. 24: 7 p.m., Palmer Township Library, 1 Weller Place, Palmer Township. Feb. 29: 10 a.m., First Presbyterian Church, 3231 Tilghman St, Allentown. March 5: 6 p.m., Nazareth Library, 295 E Center St., Nazareth. Fair Districts PA is a nonpartisan, statewide coalition of individuals and organizations who believe free and fair elections are the foundation of our democracy. Its mission is to ensure the redistricting process in Pennsylvania is impartial, transparent and accountable. Learn more at www. fairdistrictspa.com.

St. Valentine’s Day (Forever) By Charles McIlhaney Jr.

On a path to a town, long ago in month of May, By a big tree near a flowered lea, A young girl smiled with blushed affection To a young man beaming in mutual reflection As they passed along the way. And so it was, from the tender greeting, Oft became their secluded meeting. By the tree on summer’s days Walked arm in arm to the enchanted lea, Where the hours passed with hush and fleeting. And he vowed that to a knot of the ancient tree, He’d carve with words of “I Love Thee”, If she would pledge with solemn oath To take his hand as his betrothed, While he poised on bended knee. But now, he need soon join the fray Of battle raging far away. And for her answer would wait til when By the tree they’d meet again Come next Valentine’s Day. So while long the nights of winter’s pace, And with the yearn for his embrace, A heart shaped token, the girl contrived, With “I’ll Marry Thee” to its core inscribed, In quaint adorn of frills and lace. Then when came the day of St. Valentine, The day, at last, for so long she pined, Came as well a snarl of winter’s tirade,

Yet, not deterred from her promise made, She set out with her dowry of love’s design. With fierce the scourge of winter’s growl, She huddled beneath her snow swept cowl. By the tree in faith’s abide To be oncemore at her lover’s side, While through barren limbs, the bitter wind howled. With next day’s calm, below the tree’s crest, Still clutching the Valentine to her breast, They found the young girl lifeless and froze. Yet, with content her face seemed posed While holding a letter to her addressed. Whose sad words had to her arrived, Told of battle her lover had not survived. And toward the forsaken meadow they found Curious footprints on the snow ground Like as couple had walked side by side. And even til now, are those that say Who’ve passed the tree on St. Valentine’s Day, When sunbeams suffuse across the snow, The lea seems flowered with the sparkling glow, To where mysterious footprints make their way. And with certain shadow of winter’s light, From certain angle and squinted sight, On the knot of the hoary tree Seems carved with words of “I Love Thee”, While Aeolian chimes ring, like wedding bells, In the lea at night.

Gab over by Pete The Fence G. Ossip Welcome back gang, I hope all of our readers had another great week…So last week a dog was found tied to a tree near Community Drive. I don’t understand how people can be so cruel. However, after a couple days of hanging out at the Moore Township Police Department, one of the officers has adopted the lucky pup! I also recently found out about something else in Moore Township, something called “Your Pantry.” It’s on Monocacy Drive, almost reminds me of a Free Little Library filled with nonperishable food for those who need it. I’m sure you’ll be able to read more about that soon… There was another fire over the weekend in Moore Township, in the Hickory Hills mobile home park. Thankfully everyone made it out safe…I see lots of the fire companies and some libraries are selling roses for Valentine’s Day, that’s always a nice option for your loved ones. Seems like folks are pretty split on the holiday… love it or hate it, it’s here! I heard that something is supposed to go into the old Miller’s Diner- that’s great news for Northampton folks. I used to love their soup…Not so great news for Northampton folks and pet lovers, I found out that the annual Paw Prints on the Canal event has been cancelled. Unsure whether this is permanent or just for this year…My pup and I always loved going there… I saw over the weekend that smoking and vaping are now banned within 30 feet of all playgrounds in PA’s state parks for the “Young Lungs at Play” program…sounds like a good idea to me…There are some Neighborhood Watch Group meetings coming up for Bath and Nazareth, both boroughs will hold their respective meetings on Wednesday, Feb. 19. I wish I could be in two places at once! I was reading about a “Night on the Roof ” challenge held by Nazareth Area School District, have you heard about that? For every $500 the community contributes to a local anti-cancer campaign, Team One Day, one of the 10 administrators will sleep outside on the Nazareth Area High School roof! Can you imagine?! I don’t know about you but I’m pretty fed up with all of this rain, it’s so dreary; I’m dreaming of sunnier days, they’ll (hope-

fully) be here before you know it. Nazareth YMCA is offering lifeguard certification classes… only a few more months until the pools open! I know I’m thinking a tad far ahead…It may be real far ahead to even say the word Christmas, but I heard that Mayor Fi chose who will light the 2020 Christmas treeMr. Russell Siegfried, a life-long Bath Borough resident. Congrats Mr. Siegfried…Make sure you get your photos of Bath submitted, the deadline is approaching to be considered as photo of the month. The winner also receives a prize…Welp I think that’s all for me for now, knock on wood, I don’t see much of any snow in the forecast, here’s to smooth sailing until next week!

Our Best Friends Have Hairy Legs! Are essential oils Dangerous to cats? Thesprucepets.com Essential oils, aromatherapy, and potpourri in your home may be pleasant for you, but natural compounds in these fragrances can be dangerous for your cat. Take precautions when using these products so your cat does not have a toxic reaction. If your cat has any liver impairment, it may be best to eliminate these products from your cat’s environment.

Essential Oil Toxicity to Cats

Certain essential oils were once considered to be safe for cats and were recommended for such uses as treating ear mite infestations, upper respi-

ratory problems and for stress relief. However, compelling evidence has now demonstrated that essential oils can be toxic to cats, whether taken internally, applied to the skin, or simply inhaled. Exposure can lead to serious liver damage, liver failure, seizures, or even death for cats. Cats lack certain enzymes that provide the ability to properly metabolize the various compounds in essential oils, phenols in particular. These phenolic compounds occur naturally in some plants and are highly concentrated in essential oils. The liver is most often the organ which is

affected by essential oils.

Essential Oils Potentially Toxic to Cats

These oils are known to contain phenols and be toxic to cats:

• Wintergreen oil • Peppermint oil • Citrus oil (including lemon oil) • Tea tree oil (melaleuca oil) • Pine oil • Eucalyptus oil • Cinnamon oil • Pennyroyal oil • Sweet birch oil • Clove oil • Ylang ylang oil

The higher the concentration of essential oil, the greater the risk to your cat. If your cat ingests any oils accidentally, go to the veterinarian immediately.

Essential oil and aromatherapy diffusers, candles, liquid potpourri products, and room sprays are sources of airborne essential oils that cats can inhale or lick off their fur. If you can smell the fragrance of the oil, there is oil in the air and it can affect your cat. Symptoms of Essential Oil Poisoning

Cats absorb oils that are directly in contact with their skin. Oils diffused in the air are inhaled and also collect on the fur, which results in your cat ingesting them during licking and cleaning. Toxicity can occur very quickly or over a longer period of exposure.

The comprehensive plan would allow the municipalities to gather data and outline goals for largescale improvements to infrastructure and roads. Planning would take 18 to 24 months.

Most of council was in favor of this cooperation. Brent Green, manager of East Allen Township, was on hand to answer questions. His municipality will also be participating in the plan. “This will hopefully open up blinders [between municipalities],” said Councilman Robert McHale. Only Councilwoman Judy Kutzler opposed the motion. Councilman Tony Pristash, Brobst, and Planning Commission member Cynthia Carman
