Allen Township Supervisors Explore ways to reward Fire department volunteers, Incentivize new members

By KERI LINDENMUTH During their January 23 meeting, the Allen Township Board of Supervisors explored several options for rewarding existing fire department volunteers while incentivizing new members to join the team. Among them were real estate and earned income tax credits, mileage reimbursements and reimbursements per fire call.

However, due to lax state law, supervisors struggled to decide on a program that would be fair for all volunteers.

By LAURA KLOTZ The Lehigh Township Board of Supervisors opened their meeting on Tuesday, January 23 with the introduction of two applicants for the recreation board, Tammy Hess and Joe Schwartz, and one for the vacant elected auditor position, Monica Brown.

Hess has worked with the recreation board for a few years and is very invested in keeping the parks safe and up to date; her vision involves better and safer playground equipment and ensuring that the parks are ADA accessible. Schwartz is a longtime resident of Lehigh Township who has retired; he stated he wants to see greater community involvement in events, such as the turnout for the Christmas tree lighting, and feels that Delps Park is especially good for larger events.

4-H State Potato Grading Competition

Northampton County 4-H member Lirael Cooney placed first overall in the A and B Division.

Submitted by INGRID GARCIA The 2024 4-H Potato Grading and Identification Contest was held at the Pennsylvania Farm Show on January 9. Many 4-H members participated in this exciting contest; a total of 148 members. 4-H youth from Armstrong, Blair, Bucks, Bradford, Carbon, Indiana, Lehigh, Montgomery, Montour, Northampton, Potter, Union and York counties all tested their knowledge of spuds.

The contest is divided into two divisions: basic and honors. Those who compete in the honors division are winners from previous years. The competitors in the basic division must test their skills at three stations. The first station is a “potato grading” station. The station is a timed event where competitors challenge to see who can grade 100 potatoes in the shortest time. Not only is quickness important, but so is accuracy. The second station is a “defect station” where competitors must accurately identify 20 different defects on 40 potatoes. The third station is a “plate” grading station. Five potatoes are put on each of four plates.

Each plate must be evaluated on uniformity of size and shape and lack of defects. The plates must then be ranked in order. Two classes of plates must be judged.

Those in honors must complete

three stations in addition to the basic stations. The fourth station consists of two more plate classes.

The fifth station is estimating the weights of two large potatoes. At the sixth station the contestants must pick a Premium Pack. This means that out of 30 potatoes the ten most uniform and defect-free potatoes must be chosen.

This contest teaches and enhances life skills such as decision making, defending your answer, quickness and observation. These skills are used for judging potatoes and are also used for judging livestock and other items in 4-H. Enhancing the use of these skills helps prepare 4-H members for future careers and activities.

The first place “A” team was from Bradford County. The second place “A” team was from Northampton County with team members Ian Wagner, Lirael Cooney, Alivia Giles and Porter Lindeman. The third place “A” team was from Lebanon County.

The board agreed that this should help with the issue; going forward, those who wish to be heard will be required to stand and approach the board unless they are physically unable to do so.

The residents of a Creek Road home submitted a request for a waiver of the well/septic isolation distance. Wells and septic systems are supposed to be a minimum of 100 feet apart, but due to circumstances beyond the residents’ control, theirs are less than 90 feet apart. The board agreed to grant the waiver, subject to an indemnification clause.

Earl Fisher

Earl Fisher, 66, of Moore Twp., passed away on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2024 at his residence. Earl was born in Wilson Borough, to the late Earl and Louise (Schaffer) Fisher. Earl is the husband of Kelly A. (Garman) Fisher. He is a graduate of Nazareth High School. Earl was a weekend racing enthusiast. He spent many Saturday nights at Mahoning Valley Speedway. A jack of all trades, you could usually find him at home fixing and tinkering around the house. He worked for Encore Metal Coating.

Larry W. Flamisch, Sr.

Larry W. Flamisch, Sr., 80, of Nazareth, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024, at his residence. He was born on Nov. 10, 1943, in Northampton, Pa., the son of the late William F. Sr. and Miriam (Kresge) Flamisch.

Larry dedicated over four decades of his life to the construction industry, working as a skilled siding mechanic for the former Bel-Air Aluminum Supply - Nazareth. His expertise in roofing, siding and windows made him a go-to expert in the field. After years of hard work, Larry retired in 2003, leaving behind a legacy of impeccable craftsmanship and a job well done.

In addition to Bel Air, he coowned Flamisch Archery and helped his son with his taxidermy business. An avid hunter and outdoor enthusiast, Larry found solace in nature. He was in his element when tracking game in the woods. His love for the outdoors and his expertise in hunting will be cherished by those who shared in his passion. remaining budget will be reallocated for further building updates.

The township also unveiled its new website during the January 23 meeting. The new site, built

by NA Studios, features an updated logo, ADA enhancements and security upgrades. There is a new newsfeed, and residents can review Board of Supervisor agendas or listen to meeting recordings. In addition, the site features an AI chatbot that residents can interact with to find answers on permits, township news and more.

Also on the agenda was a proposed grocery market in the township. DG Market, a grocery chain owned by Dollar General, will appear before the Zoning Hearing Board on February 22.

Developers will seek two variances: to decrease the requirement that loading docks be no less than 130 feet from property lines and to increase the small commercial space square footage from 10,000 square feet to 12,480 square feet.

While supervisors are not against the idea of a new grocery store in the township (Hassler stated that it would be a plus for the area), they do wonder whether the developer can make changes to the plan that would decrease the store’s square-footage in such a densely populated residential area.

The land where the proposed market will be built, along Cherryville Road, is zoned neighborhood-commercial. Only small commercial spaces, like minimarts, are allowed in this zone.

However, anything larger than 10,000 square feet is considered “large commercial.” DG argues Allen Township has no zoning for commercial spaces between a mini-mart or a Walmart.

Supervisors have asked that the developers appear before the board sometime in February for further discussion before the Zoning Hearing Board hears the case.

Finally, supervisors voted to temporarily close the township’s dog park starting on February 12. This closure is routine. The township regularly closes the park during the wet months of

late winter and early spring to prevent issues with mud and give the grass time to regrow. Weather permitting, the park will reopen

To enter your spectacular chili recipe, please register as a contestant by Saturday, February 17 at 4 p.m. We must have at least five contestants for the contest to take place. Retail theft, resisting Arrest at Walmart On January 13, Elijah Rodriguez, 18 of Bushkill, was observed by Walmart Security committing retail theft. He pushed a shopping cart with $203 worth of merchandise out to a vehicle and proceeded to load it into the vehicle. He returned to the store and attempted to do so again with $61 worth of merchandise. Colonial Regional Police officers were waiting outside but Rodriguez fled on foot back into the store.

A foot chase ensued through the store, across the parking lot and across Route 248. Rodriguez was then taken into custody and was charged with retail theft and resisting arrest.

Retail theft from Kohl’s On January 16 at 4 p.m., CRPD was dispatched to Kohl’s in Lower Nazareth Township for the theft of clothing worth $676.

Through investigation it was determined that 21-year-old Salah Gaddy of Easton had walked into the fitting rooms and placed clothing on himself. He then attempted to walk out of the store.

CRPD officers took him into custody. Gaddy is being charged with receiving stolen property and retail theft.

Retail theft Wegmans On January 27, CRPD officers were dispatched to Wegmans in Lower Nazareth Township for a theft in progress. Samantha Jones, 39 of Milford, N.J., was accused of taking several items from Wegmans and placing them in a shopping cart, concealing them with reusable shopping

bags and exiting the store without paying. Jones was placed under arrest for retail theft. The total value of items taken was $615.99.

Theft Allen Township In the commission of this crime, an unknown actor ran up to the front door of a residence on Gray Drive in Allen Township and stole a package containing two iPhone 15 Pro Max phones, valued at $1,200 and $1,400. After taking the package, the actor ran back to a white Ford Explorer and got into the passenger side before it drove away. Also, approximately two minutes after the theft, a block Honda Accord stopped in front of the residence, backed up the vehicle to the end of the driveway, then drove away.

Identity theft East Allen Township The following was investigated by the PSP-Bethlehem. On December 2, a victim’s identity had been compromised whereby an Apple Card-GS bank account had been opened in her name.

This account incurred $1,562 in fraudulent charges before being shut down. Anyone with information is asked to contact PSPBethlehem at 610-861-2026.

Terroristic threats East Allen Township On November 16, a victim in East Allen Township received a phone call from an unknown individual demanding money from an unpaid brothel visit. The victim was eventually threatened enough and convinced to transfer $700 to the unknown individual. Anyone with information is

Continued from page 3 that a lease for one year with an option for two additional years will be put out for bid, with the township retaining the right to refuse any bids that are offered; the current farmer will be advised of the situation. Rehrig will draft the bid advertisement, assisted by Hess and Backenstoe as needed, and any bids received will be reviewed at future meetings.

Katherine Mack thanked the board for allowing the recreation and auditor candidates to have a chance to speak, as they had no such opportunity during the reorganization meeting. She then asked why the auditor fee has increased by $15,000; Miller explained that this is due to a forensic audit being performed, which the board is not currently at liberty to discuss with the public.

Residents of a South Cottonwood Road home presented the board with photographs of an ongoing flooding issue on their property related to a township pipe. It is overflowing into their septic system and causing a smell of sewage. Muffley promised to schedule a visit to their home so he can review the situation.

The board members then adjourned the meeting and went into an executive session.

The next meeting of the Board of Supervisors is scheduled for Tuesday, February 13 at 7 p.m. in the municipal building, located at 1069 Municipal Rd., Walnutport.

This week in the ‘Dart League’ we find 1st place Dryland ’sweeping’ Star of Bethlehem by scores of 6-0, 7-4, and 6-1. Leading the way for Dryland was Dave Crouthamel 5 for 11, with Bernie Yurko, Shawn Sigley and Butch Silfies each going 5 for 12. Bill Hoke Sr. was 5 for 12, Bryan Frankenfield 4 for 12 and Kyle Taylor 4 for 13 for Star of Bethlehem.

In another ‘sweep’, Emmanuel beat Blessed Trinity 5-1, 4-3, and 9-1. Top hitters for Emmanuel were Tom Dormieda 9 for 13(hitting the cycle in Game 2 and a ‘Grand Slam’ in Game 3), Troy Haydt 7 for 14, Chuck Achenzie 7 for 15 and Jon Rice 6 for 14.

For Blessed Trinity, Dan Halteman was 5 for 12, Todd Jones also 5 for 12 and Tony DeAngeles 4 for 11.

In other action, St. Paul’s lost the ‘nightcap’ 1-0 to Christ UCC after winning the first 2 games 5-4 and 3-2. Leading hitters for St. Paul’s included Jennifer Erkinger 6 for 13, Kevin Gross 5 for 13 and John Hoysan 4 for 13 (HR).
