Submitted by CHRISTOPHER HOENSCHEID The George Wolf Elementary School spelling bee was held on Tuesday, January 9, and the Moore Elementary School spelling bee was held on Wednesday, January 10. The fourth and fifth grade classroom champions and runners-up competed. The George Wolf winner was fifth grader Michael Goldberg. (Michael also won last year as a fourth grader
and advanced to the regional spelling bee.) The Moore Elementary winner was fifth grader Madison Wasilewski. Michael and Madison will now compete in the online qualifier round in an attempt to advance to the 4th Annual Diamond City Regional Spelling Bee in WilkesBarre on March 10. The winner of the regional spelling bee will then compete in the 2024 Scripps National Spelling Bee in National Harbor, Maryland.
President Biden visits the Lehigh Valley By HOME NEWS STAFF On Friday, January 12 just after 1 p.m., Air Force One touched down with President Joe Biden at the Lehigh Valley International Airport. During Biden’s brief stop in the Lehigh Valley, he visited local businesses in Emmaus including Emmaus Run Inn, Nowhere Coffee Company and South Mountain Cycle.
Next Biden and his motorcade made their way to the Allentown Fire Training Academy before departing from LVIA at 4:25 p.m. Biden’s visit was met with crowds of his supporters in addition to crowds of people voicing their opposition to him and his visit. Dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters also gathered.
By SAVANNAH BROWN The Bath Borough Council met Tuesday, January 2 for their reorganization meeting and regular monthly meeting, and then again on Wednesday, January 10 for a special meeting. As the first order of business, Councilpersons Emanuel Mirabito, Frank Hesch and Samantha Angst took their Oath’s of Office. Lauren Bullsnake was sworn in during the special meeting. The reorganization of officers included the election of Frank Hesch as council president, Michele Ehrgott as vice president and Emanuel Mirabito as president pro-tempore. Other appointments included the following: renewal of Borough Manager Bradford T. Flynn’s employment agreement; reappointment of James F. Kratz from Stevens E. Lee P.C. as borough solicitor; reappointment of Ron Madison from Colliers Engineering & Design Inc. as borough engineer; Christopher Taylor, Scott Brown, Jacob Schray, Justin Robins and Luke Eggert from Hanover Engineering as sewage enforcement officers; reappointment of Shawn Leidy from Barry Isett UCC/BCO Plan Review Office as the code and zoning enforcement officer; reappointment of Phillip West and Christopher Butera to three-year terms on the Planning Commission; and reappointment of Molly Bender as a board member off the Zoning Hearing Board. During the special meeting, Attorney E. Lee Stinnett from Salzmann Hughes P.C. provided an
in-depth presentation on the borough’s municipal separate storm sewer system management dilemma. Stinnett was hired by the borough to help develop the MS4 program, a potential stormwater fee, the Municipal Stormwater Authority and any agreements needed in relation to stormwater management. The MS4 program regulates stormwater runoff at the municipal level to reduce pollution discharged into U.S. waterways and is administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Pa. Department of Environmental Protection under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System. The permit requires municipalities to develop and implement a stormwater management plan based on six minimum control measures as mandatory elements. Based on the regulatory requirements, the borough has several large projects that it must complete by the end of 2027 or they run the risk receiving hefty fines. The dilemma the borough is faced with is finding funding for the MS4 projects due to limited grant opportunities. Additionally, the commonwealth does not permit municipalities to charge a utility or stormwater management fee to residents under the Borough Code and ongoing litigation has been moving slowly since 2018 to provide municipalities with direction on how to move forward with funding for MS4 projects. However, under the Municipal
Authority Act, certain municipalities may charge a utility fee for stormwater management if they are part of a stormwater authority. The act states that municipalities may “exercise all powers necessary or convenient for fixing, altering, charging and collecting rates and other charges in the area served by its facilities at reasonable and uniform rates to be determined exclusively by it for the purpose of providing for the payment of the expenses of the authority, the construction, improvement, repair, maintenance and operation of its facilities and properties. Moreover, under the Second Class Township Code that the borough falls under, the code asserts that “for the purposes of funding the construction, maintenance and operation of stormwater management facilities, systems and management plans authorized under this article, a township may assess reasonable and uniform fees based in whole or in part on the characteristics of the property benefited by the facilities, systems and management plans.” The code also states that the fees assessed shall not exceed the amount necessary to meet the minimum requirements of the Continued on page 5

Moravian Historical Society to host youth Embroidery workshop

On Saturday, January 20 at 1 p.m., makers aged 8 through 17 are invited to learn embroidery techniques such as cross stitch, backstitch and French knots. Participants will create a “welcome sachet'' or a “door hanger.” The workshop will be led by members of the LVEGA and will take

Lawrence A. “Larry” Fiedor
Lawrence A. “Larry” Fiedor, 90, of Nazareth, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home on Tuesday evening, Jan. 9, 2024. Larry has been reunited with his loving wife Mary “Mitzi” (Marositz) Fiedor of 51 years prior to her passing on Dec. 29, 2016. Larry was born on Oct.1, 1933, in Upper Nazareth Township, son of the late John and Rose (Lucas) Fiedor. Larry proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He retired after 28 years from Penn Dixie Cement. Prior to this, he worked for Cooper Industries, Easton Division as a machinist. He was a die-hard Eagles fan. Larry was a faithful and active member of Holy Family Catholic Church of Nazareth. Larry will be dearly missed by his sister, Dianne James and husband David, of Port Richey, Fla., and loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Helen Stannard, brothers, Raymond, and John Fiedor, and a nephew. Family and friends of Larry were invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, Jan. 15, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Church, 410 W. Center St., Nazareth, PA 18064. Margaret A. Halbfoerster
Margaret A. Halbfoerster, 101, formerly of Bath, passed into the arms of the Lord on Monday, Jan. 8, 2024. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Her beloved husband of 64 years, Frederick W. Halbfoerster, died in 2004. Born in Bath, Margaret was a daughter of the late Russell V. and Beatrice E. (Graver) Smith. She attended Nazareth High School. Affectionately known as Margie, she was a talented baker well known for her unusual character cakes and outstanding wedding cakes. She owned and operated Margie’s Cake Shop in Moore Township for 20 years and was later employed at the former Keppel’s Market in Bath where she was the bakery manager for 10 years before retiring. A member of the PA Order of Eastern Star – Nazareth Chapter, now Calypso Chapter in Bethlehem, Margie served as a Past Matron from 1953 to 1954. She was also a member of the Midcounty Senior Center in Bath, the Friendly Senior Citizens of Walnutport and a life-long member of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ – Seemsville, where she served as a Sunday School teacher, secretary, Golden Link President and was a former member of the choir and United Church Women. Although baking was her passion, Margie also enjoyed sewing, quilting and gardening. Survivors: Her loving grandchildren, Rev. Timothy Halbfoerster and wife, Marie, of Mechanicsburg, Michael J. Halbfoerster and wife, Jennifer, of Moore Township, and Katrina Sonnenberg and husband, Curt, of Olyphant; great-granddaughters, Rev. Heather Singleton and husband, Chad, of Fairfax, Virginia, Ashley Chest and husband,
Joseph, of Enola, and Amber Shaw and husband, Wesley, of Round Hill, Virginia; eight greatgreat-grandchildren, Kiley, Lukcas, Makynze, Andrew, Dominic, Ryann, Morgan and Lily; her late son’s companion, Catherine Dickinson of Moore Township; nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Frederick, she was predeceased by her son, Richard E. Halbfoerster; siblings, Clarence Smith and Arlene Miller; a niece and a nephew. Services: A Funeral Service was held on Monday, Jan. 15, 2023, at noon in St. Peter’s United Church of Christ – Seemsville, 8142 Valley View Rd., Northampton, PA 18067. Hilda M. Kiss
Hilda M. Kiss, 94, formerly of Walnutport, passed away peacefully on Friday, Jan. 12, 2024, at Bethlehem Manor. She was the wife of the late Joseph H. Kiss, who passed away in 2001. Born Nov. 2, 1929, in W. Catasauqua, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Fischl and Mary (Gaal) Fischl Bartholomew and stepdaughter to the late Frederick Bartholomew. Hilda was Den Mother of Cub Scouts 99 and Girl Scout Leader 427, both of Northampton. She was also active with the Blue Mountain Fish & Game Ladies Auxiliary. Hilda loved camping and playing bingo. Survivors: Daughter, Barbara Ann Keenhold and husband, William; and son, Dennis Kiss. Hilda was predeceased by her son, Michael, and siblings and stepsiblings. Services: Family and friends may call on Friday, January 19 from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Reichel Funeral Home, 326 E. 21st St., Northampton. A prayer service will follow at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Alfred C. “Al” Miles, Jr.
Alfred C. “Al” Miles, Jr., 79, of Lehigh Twp., passed away on Monday, Jan. 15, 2024 at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest. He was the husband of Karen M. (Zakavage) Miles. Al was born in Allentown on Feb. 16, 1944 to the late Alfred C. Sr. and Marion (Auge) Miles. He was a 1962 graduate of Catasauqua High School. Alfred worked as a sales engineer for SKF Bearings – Lansdale. Al was a member of Covenant United Methodist Church – Bath, where he volunteered. He had a passion for working on his classic cars and you could always find him tinkering as a handyman. Outside of his professional life, Alfred was a devoted member of Covenant United Methodist Church in Bath. He found joy in volunteering at the church and Pocono Plateau, sharing his time and talents to make a positive impact on the lives of others. One of Al's passions was restoring classic cars. He could often be found tinkering away, meticulously bringing old beauties back to life. His craftsmanship and attention to detail were admired by all who saw his work. Alfred will be missed by his family, including his children: Matthew T. Miles and his partner Kristy Stocker of Palmerton, Mark A. Miles and his wife Andrea of Walnutport and Amanda J. Twombly and her husband Matthew J. of Bethlehem. He is also survived by his brother, David T. Miles of Moore Twp., as well as his cherished grandchildren: Daymian, Alberta, Orson and Everett. A memorial service, celebrating the life of Alfred C. Miles Jr., will be held on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024, at 11 a.m. in the George G. Bensing Funeral Home, LLC, located at 2165 Community Dr., Bath, PA 18014. Prior to the service, family and friends are invited to a calling hour from 10 a.m. until the start of the service. daughter of the late Giuseppe and Concetta (Arigo) Catalfamo. Benedetta was the wife of the late Emanuel T. Mirabito, Sr., with whom she shared 55 years of marriage prior to his passing in 2012. Family was very important to Benedetta as she was a devoted housewife, mother and grandmother. Her favorite hobbies included sewing, crocheting, knitting, embroidering and she had a very green thumb and enjoyed gardening. She also enjoyed cooking and baking for her family. Very devoted to her faith, Benedetta was a longtime member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, in Bath. Survivors: she will be missed by her family including her two daughters, Rosemary Mirabito, Concetta "Tina" Mirabito, son, Emanuel T. Mirabito and his wife, Fiorella; beloved grandsons, Antonio G. Mirabito and his wife, Kelli, Nicholas S. Mirabito and his wife, Julia; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. Services: will be held privately at the convenience of her family. Entombment will be in Holy Family Cemetery, Nazareth, Pa. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Bartholomew Funeral Home, Bath. Federal Water Pollution Act and Federal or State laws governing the implementation of the act. Stinnett then explained that some of the biggest culprits of stormwater runoff are tax exempt entities such as churches, due to their big buildings and parking lots. Therefore, the stormwater/ utility fee would not be a tax and would be based on a property’s impervious coverage and how much rainwater runoff is being contributed, which all property owners including tax exempt entities would be required to pay. Stinnett also suggested a creditbased program for residents that perform stormwater maintenance or improvements on their property, which encourages participation and would provide a reduction in their stormwater/utility fee. On the upside, stormwater management updates include updates to roads, which are tied in with stormwater fees and help improve life for residents. According to Stinnett, most MS4 projects will show an improvement to flooding in the community that

residents will be able to physically see themselves. The next steps will be for the MS4 Committee to review Stinnett’s suggestions and then share their recommendations with council. However, the earliest that the proposed quarterly fee could potentially be implemented would not be until January 2025. Bath Borough Council and the Administration Department expressed that they are going to ramp

Disorderly conduct and Public drunkenness On January 5 at 4 p.m., the CRPD was dispatched to Easton Nazareth Highway for a report of a disturbance. Officers were advised a female was inside the store “Shoe Dept.” causing a disturbance by knocking over merchandise and throwing benches. Officers arrived on scene and located the female, who was identified as 40-year-old Marsha Castillo of Phillipsburg, N.J. Officers noticed the smell of alcohol coming from Castillo’s breath, along with slurred speech and difficulty standing. Officers searched Castillo and found alcohol in her purse. EMS arrived on location and Castillo was taken to the hospital. Charges to be filed. Walmart retail theft On January 3 around 10:30 p.m., Walmart security stopped a man after he was observed intentionally bypassing merchandise while using a self-checkout register. The man was identified as 44-year-old Gilbert Colon Jr. Colon concealed multiple items in shopping bags that he did
not ring up or pay for. He was stopped by security as he left the store. He was issued a non-traffic citation for summary retail theft as the value was $54.01. Wegmans retail theft On December 23 the CRPD was dispatched to Wegmans on Easton Nazareth Highway for a theft report. Officers found the suspect, identified as 34-yearold Alicia Trembler, in the Asset Protection office. Trembler was seen selecting multiple items and placing them in a bag. She then went to check out, where she passed all points of sale and failed to render payment. While officers were searching Trembler’s property, they located drug paraphernalia. Trembler was taken into custody. Charges to be filed are retail theft and possession of drug paraphernalia. Target retail theft On December 2 the CRPD responded to Target for a report of a retail theft involving a female. Police spoke to Loss Prevention who relayed that the female, identified as 19-year-old Amber Florencia De La Cuadra, had skipped ringing merchandise at the self-checkout and attempted to exit the store without paying. The total of the unscanned merchandise was $190.28. As

police searched Florencia De La Cuadra’s purse they located more concealed merchandise totaling $65. Loss Prevention also stated they had an open investigation on her from five previous thefts dating back to October. She is accused of taking $287.48 during the five previous incidents. She was charged with one count of retail theft (M1) and transported to Central Booking for processing and arraignment. Retail theft Colonial Regional Police were dispatched to Walmart in Lower Nazareth Township for a retail theft on January 12. Loss prevention had a female in custody and stated she did not scan all items, concealed items on her body and switched tags on items to change the price. The woman walked by all points of sale with the unpaid merchandise. The female was identified as 71-year-old Judith Maric of Hellertown. The total amount of the attempted theft was $128.81. Maric was issued a non-traffic citation for retail theft and released. Domestic violence On January 4 at 9:48 a.m., CRPD responded to a domestic in progress in Hanover Township. The victim reported that she was pushed into a closet and the victim sustained bruising and scratches. The defendant was arrested for domestic violence, simple assault and harassment. Disorderly conduct and Harassment The Colonial Regional Police were dispatched to the area of Route 248 and Wawa for a fight on December 30 at 12:26 p.m. When officers arrived, they spoke with two victims who said they were assaulted by an older male. Both victims pointed to the suspect who police were also with. One victim said he was struck in the face by the suspect while sitting in his vehicle and the other victim said the suspect attempted to hit the cell phone out of his hand and hit him in the shoulder. as 52-year-old Joseph Pietruszkiewicz of Easton. Pietruszkiewicz was issued two non-traffic citations, one for harassment and one for disorderly conduct. Retail theft Target On December 29 at 12:30 p.m., the CRPD responded to Target in Lower Nazareth Township for a retail theft that just occurred. Kiam Tariq, 37 of Bronx, N.Y., selected $200.85 of merchandise and did not pay. Tariq then walked to customer service and returned the items for a gift card. Justice Frazier-Alston, 39 of Bronx, N.Y., selected 26 Sony Playstation controllers, four JBL speakers and clothing, then exited the store without paying for the items, which totaled $2099.70. Tariq and Frazier-Alston then left the parking lot in the same vehicle. They were apprehended a few hours later when they attempted to steal at the Target on Airport Road. The CRPD obtained arrest warrants for the suspects. The arrest warrants were served on the suspects while they were in Lehigh County Prison for their Airport Road Target thefts. DUI crash On December 21, a black Ram pickup truck was observed traveling north on Route 512 crossing the center double yellow lines just south of Allen Street. The Pa. State Police Bethlehem barracks was then flagged by a pedestrian as they were dispatched to a crash that had just occurred near Chrisphalt Drive. Upon arrival on scene, the involved operator stated she pulled over to check on another operator when her vehicle was struck by that same operator, a man driving a black pickup truck who had a beer can in his hand. The truck was stopped shortly after and the operator, 68-year-old Andrew Petrick of Bath, was determined to be under the influence. Charges filed accordingly. DUI crash The Pa. State Police-Bethlehem Station investigated a one-vehicle reportable DUI crash that occurred on December 28 at 2:04 a.m. in the 1300 block of Weaversville Road, prior to Pany Drive. It was determined the operator of the vehicle, 26-yearold Stephanie Acosta of Allentown, was under the influence of suspected alcohol and taken into custody without incident. Charges to be filed. A mailbox, wooden fence, metal fence and power wires were damaged in this one-vehicle crash. Found property/drugs The Pa. State Police-Bethlehem barracks responded to the 6000 block of Ruch Road in Northampton County on December 5 for a report of a found suspected drug in a baggie. The baggie, containing white powder,
was later destroyed as requested by the complainant. Theft Bath Borough The following incident was investigated by the Pa. State PoliceBethlehem barracks. At some time, an unknown individual made an application for a Discover Student Credit Card in the victim’s name without her knowledge or permission. The application for this credit card was denied and the victim suffered no losses. Anyone with information in regards to this is asked to contact PSP-Bethlehem at 610-8612026. Harassment/ Physical contact This incident was investigated by the Pa. State Police-Bethlehem barracks. On December 30 at 12:27 a.m., the defendant, 21-year-old Jadrien Robles of Bath, engaged in a physical altercation with his girlfriend, whereby he grabbed her and drug her through a gravel parking lot, causing minor abrasions to her right wrist, left part of her face and lower lip. A non-traffic citation for harassment was filed against Robles. Disorderly conduct On January 1 at 2:11 p.m., Pa. State Police were dispatched to Witherspoon Court in Allen Township for a disturbance. Upon arrival, police made contact with a 19-year-old male inside his apartment and he related that a 20-year-old female was in his apartment and would not leave. He stated that he dragged her out of his apartment onto the front step. She stated that he dragged her out of the apartment and that she was yelling at him and banging on the door. Both were cited for disorderly conduct. Forgery/counterfeiting PSP-Bethlehem responded to a private residence in East Allen
Township for the report of stolen mail. The victim mailed two checks in the amount of $50 on December 7 and on December 19 they were notified by their bank that the checks had been intercepted. The checks were altered and forged for $3,850.25 and $5,500.26. The victim’s bank did not cash the checks and notified the victim. The United States Postal Service and Postal Inspector’s office have been advised of this investigation. Assault/harassment On December 15, the defendant, 52-year-old David Buechele of Northampton, engaged in a physical altercation with

his on-again-off-again girlfriend where he pointed a loaded handgun at her and her 5-year-old son and demanded they leave the residence on Cherryville Road. The defendant then pushed her out the door, causing her to fall into a barbecue grill. Charges of recklessly endangering another person, assault and harassment were filed. Theft by deception On December 13, Pa. State Police responded to Phyllese Drive in Allen Township for a report of identity theft. The victim stated they were contacted via Facebook Messenger by a fraudulent account. The account
requested the victim’s personal information in order for them to earn grant money. The victim created a Zelle account in order to make a payment before realizing that it was a scam. Burglary On December 15, Pa. State Police arrested a female who attempted to enter her ex-husband’s residence on Airport Road. The arrestee was under the influence of alcohol and went to the residence, who had an active PFA against her. She found an unlocked door and entered the residence. She took possession of a phone, and was then detained and arrested on the scene.

This week in the Dart League was a “Sweep Week” as all the matches were a ‘Sweep’. First
place Dryland had a ‘sweep’ of Ebenezer 11-4, 4-0, and 3-2 in 10 innings. Leading the Dryland hitters included Shawn Sigley 6 for 13, Bernie Yurko also 6 for 13, Butch Silfies 5 for 12, Larry Golick 5 for 14, with HR’s from Trevor Zavacki and Rich Durn.
