4-Hers attend National 4-H Congress
By SAVANNAH BROWNOn Monday, January 2, Nazareth Borough Council kicked off the new year by congratulating the Nazareth Blue Eagle Marching Band on their tremendous 2022 undefeated competition season and the seven championships they have won.
Mayor Lance E. Colondo presented the marching band and Band Director Rick Hilborn with a resolution from council that recognized and publicly honored the band director, band officers, band members, color guards, drum majors, student conductor, band front, and the support staff for their recent championships and incredible successes at the state and
regional levels.
“Nazareth Borough Council thanks Band Director Rick Hilborn and the parents of the band members who have supported this group of talented musicians, and who have helped make all of these successes a reality. Each year, Nazareth Borough Council invites the Nazareth Blue Eagle Marching Band to headline on Memorial Day and Halloween parades, and each year they are unquestionably the musical highlight for those events,” Colondo continued.
Mayor Colondo added that the council congratulates the marching band on their successes and thanked them for making Nazareth proud.

To be chosen to represent the county and 4-H at the National 4-H Congress, held in Atlanta, Georgia, is a great honor for any 4-Her. This represents years of 4-H work and service, plus community service, all documented in yearly reports.
The 2022 candidates for the National 4-H Congress from Northampton County 4-H were Sheridan Taylor, a senior at Pen Argyl High School, and Laura Hurlock, a senior at Northampton Area High School. Both are members of Backtrackers 4-H Horse and Pony Club.
The National 4-H Congress hosted 4-Hers from the United States. It is a leadership activity
that emphasizes community service. Various speakers and workshops are attended by the delegates. Quite often friends made at this event last a lifetime. The experience is truly life changing and inspiring.
Backtrackers 4-H Horse and Pony Club is very proud to have these two members represent the club and county at a national event. Sheridan and Laura follow in the footsteps of many previous club members who have had the opportunity to attend the National 4-H Congress.
Backtrackers is currently accepting new members, although there is limited space available. The club is open to all interest-

Salem UCC of Moorestown completes anniversary celebration
Submitted by ED
TAYLORSalem UCC of Moorestown completed its 250th anniversary celebration with an open house and organ/trumpet duet on Saturday, December 10. The open house included a display of historical items like photos, certificates, registers and much more. The organ/trumpet duet was performed by Jeff Wohlbach and Mike Bedics.
Salem’s pipe organ covers a large part of the church’s history. The organ was consecrated in Salem over 100 years ago in 1915.
Later, in 1958, the Fritzche Organ Co. moved the pipe organ from behind the choir loft to its current location facing the choir loft. The organ was also electrified at this time. Worshippers at Salem will still hear the organ’s melodious sounds regularly during worship on Sunday mornings.
The event was the last of the special events for Salem’s 250th anniversary yearlong celebration. The open house featured a display of historical items. The displayed items varied and included
photos of activities and individuals, a wedding dress, books, certificates and documents. The display was a wonderful depiction of the history of Salem and the community.
It was a busy year for Salem. The church maintained most of its normal picnics and dinners. The dinners were back to in-person attendance for the first time since Covid had limited them to take-out only. The picnics were also back to more “normal” crowds. Salem also held its annual basket raffle and golf tour-
nament. Salem UCC enjoys sharing its events in the surrounding community.
The anniversary celebration added a few new events open to the community. Recording artist Daryl Mosely performed in April. There was a service to commemorate the anniversary in October and the organ/trumpet duet in December. There was one event open to Salem’s members –a pig roast held in September.
Salem UCC of Moorestown holds worship services Sunday mornings at 10:15 a.m. Over
the summer, the time is changed to 9:30 a.m. and held outside in the grove (weather permitting). The regular events will be back for 2023 as well. Salem looks forward to continuing its involvement within the surrounding community.

vania Farm Show.
“Farmers are the two percent who feed us, and the military are the two percent who keep us safe,” Redding said. “We owe both a tremendous debt of gratitude. That’s why we set aside a day at the PA Farm Show every year to honor our military veterans, putting them in the spotlight with the Army-Navy Cookoff and other special events throughout the day. We especially honor the farmer-veterans who put their skills to work after military service, continuing to serve their communities and country in agriculture. Our hats are off and our hands to our hearts with a sincere thank you to Pennsylvania’s military veterans and their families during Farm Show and every day of the year.”
“We are happy to once again partner with the Department of Agriculture to host a special Service Members, Veterans and their Families Day on January 12,” said Schindler. “I encourage all veterans to stop by the Farm Show, enjoy the many veteran discounts and relish in a day honoring their service to our nation. It will also be a great opportunity to learn about some of the many contributions veteran farmers make to Pennsylvania’s agricultural industry.”
The day’s schedule is available online, and will begin with the singing of the national anthem at 8 a.m. at the GIANT® Expo Hall by Kara Grenell of Fayette County, granddaughter of a Korean War veteran.
Veterans visiting the Farm Show can stop by the DMVA outreach van at Space #2208 in the
GIANT® Expo Hall to talk with an accredited veteran service officer about the benefits they have earned through their service.
Anyone interested in the Pennsylvania National Guard can learn more by stopping by the Pennsylvania Army National Guard Recruiting & Retention Battalion at Space #2215 in the GIANT Expo Hall.
Visitors interested in military history can visit Space #2310 in the GIANT® Expo Hall to see a WWII display commemorating the Pennsylvania Farm Show’s role during the war. During WWII, the Farm Show Complex housed the Pennsylvania State School of Aeronautics, where thousands of civilians came to learn how to repair airplane engines damaged in the war.
Other highlights include the ever-popular Army-Navy CookOff which will commence at 1 p.m. on the PA Preferred® Culinary Connection Stage in the Main Hall with the singing of the national anthem by Caden Smith of Lancaster County, son of a current member of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.
There will be additional cooking demonstrations held at noon and again from 2 to 5 p.m. on the hour at the Culinary Connection Stage conducted by active members of the military and veterans.

Beautiful Life
by DR. GLENN CLEARIE, DC
I would suppose that those who are avid readers of Natural Perspectives do not find themselves in their teenage years any longer. While there may be a few stragglers here and there, my guess is that this decades-long column more than likely finds you, as it does me, as a mature individual. If accurate, then would it be okay if we had an “adult chat?” I hope so because every now and again we all need to speak candidly, albeit lovingly, to each other. Here it goes…
When are you finally going to appreciate, I mean truly appreciate, life here on earth? Is it next week, next year, maybe never? I myself was confronted with a version of this very question recently while speaking with my mother on her 88th birthday.
My mother’s reflections on her life kept me listening rather than speaking. She spoke of her grandparents, her father and mother, her brother, sister and her childhood love, and husband, my father, all since passed. The conversation pulled me through the years of her life as a young girl to mother now matriarch, with much visual imagery that elated on one hand and wrought with more than a few tears on another.
Throughout our conversation there was a sense of calm layered with gratitude and expressions of blessings bestowed despite trials and tribulations that life brings us all. Imagine that, through all the pain, my mother is thankful for it all in a way that only looking through the lens of maturity, wisdom and discernment can one understand.
During our conversation, my mother kept repeating how beautiful life is. She is right. The more she said it, the longer I listened, the deeper her words sank into me. At one point she said she feels like she blinked, and 25 years passed by. I was given a directive to start enjoying life at this very moment.
Ladies and gentlemen, my mother is right…it is a beautiful life that needs to be enjoyed at this very moment.
Through it all, life as we know it should be cherished and again, enjoyed as best able. I know much pain exists and sometimes I cannot fathom why such terrible things happen and occur. I do know that the glory of God is eternal, and I am, we are, His creation. As such, nothing that has happened to us or will happen to us will be unnoticed by God.
If we could briefly see “behind the curtain,” I bet it would alleviate all agony. Alas, that’s not the system created by the Creator. Now while I have diverged from what I thought this week’s article would be, please allow a few more moments in this direction before we pull to the close.
Know here and now absolutely nothing, and I repeat nothing, that occurs to me, you, my mother, or our great-great-great grandchildren will ever catch God by surprise. Never will any angelic creatures hear God boom through the heavens, “I didn’t see that coming!”
I do think that once each of us in turn cross the great divide and enter into His presence, we will all ultimately reflect on what a beautiful life it was, is, here on earth.
So, as we once again enter into a new year, I hope we do so with both eyes open fully grasping and embracing the life each of us have been given, albeit brief and oft challenging. Celebrate being human. Breath in. Breath out. It is a beautiful life indeed.

citation for Hilborn’s role in enriching the lives of Nazareth’s children, students, and residents upon the retirement of his distinguished and very productive career where he led the Nazareth Marching Band to three competition overall seasonal championships and new levels of regional prominence.
“Rick Hilborn has been an inspiration to all and has received honors that include being named as one of the 300 nationwide band directors chosen to march in the 2022 Rose Parade. Beloved by his band members, news of his retirement had been labeled his final competition season as the ‘Rick Hilborn farewell tour.’ Championship and every event they entered a seasonal championship was Rick's retirement present,” said Colondo.
Nazareth School District Superintendent Richard R. Kaskey also provided a heartfelt message to Hilborn, stating that he was very proud of the marching band students and Hilborn.
“It’s a very important position and I think it's going to be one of our toughest hires to replace this gentleman and I know how much hard work everybody puts into the band. You don't realize the countless hours these children and these musicians put in day in and day out, so I appreciate that effort.
Rick, thank you for mentoring all of these youngsters,” Kaskey shared.
Councilman Christopher D. Crook also offered an emotional message to Hilborn for his mentorship to the students he has taught throughout the years (including his own children), which he admits has been an amazing gift to Nazareth and fellow parents.
Nazareth Borough Council appoints New fire chiefs, fire police, and Councilman
By SAVANNAH BROWNThe Nazareth Borough Council met Monday, January 2 with a busy agenda that welcomed new members of various boards and committees, as well as the appointment of three new fire chiefs, five new fire police, and a new councilman to replace the late councilman, Larry Stoudt who passed away on December 19 following a short illness.
First, Mayor Lance E. Colondo swore in Gerald Johnson as Fire Chief, Joseph Ianovale Jr. as First Assistant, and Mark Morella as
Second Assistant.
Mayor Colondo also swore in the newly appointed Fire Police members including William Kiefer Jr. as Captain, John Gostony as Fire Policeman, Kerry Frey as Fire Policeman, Raymond Fogel as Fire Policeman, Angela Barnes as Fire Policewoman, and Tyler Kiefer as Fire Policeman.
A moment of silence was then observed for the late councilman Larry Stoudt. Council President Daniel R. Chiavaroli shared fond memories of Stoudt, recalling that he knew Stoudt since he became a councilman in 1983 and that Stoudt had always been a “straight shooter.”
Councilman Carl R. Strye Jr. expressed that Stoudt’s wisdom and knowledge of the borough was
“second to none” and that Stoudt was the backbone of the Nazareth community.
Councilman Carl A. Fischl shared that Stoudt’s heart was always in Nazareth.
Next, council unanimously approved the following motions under finance: the yearly resolution prohibiting member contributions to the Police Pension Plan; the hiring of Campbell, Rappold & Jurasits to do the annual borough audit for 2022 and submit it to the Pennsylvania DCED by March 31; naming Alfred Pierce as the borough’s 2023 delegate to the Northampton County Tax Collection Commission and Paul Kokolus as the alternate delegate; the re-
