By SAVANNAH BROWN
During the Moore Township Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, July 2, supervisors unanimously approved a waiver for the Mary Ellen Wetzel lot line adjustment in regard to locating and quantifying woodlands, manmade and natural features on one of the lots, conditioned upon the applicant meeting the conditions set forth in the Keystone Consulting Engineers review letter dated June 19.
Supervisors also granted conditional approval of the Mary Ellen Wetzel lot line adjustment for road frontage that makes one lot slightly bigger, which will improve the safety of the ingress/ egress for the property owner.
During reports, Police Chief Gary West stated that for the

the project cost.
Holub shared that he plans to hold a mum sale in August to help raise funds for the project and hold other fundraisers if needed, but also hoped that council would appropriate some of the $26,000 in funds that were previously budgeted for the project.
The board unanimously approved the project and a budget of up to $10,000.
Next, the board unanimously approved a “Carpency” conservation easement appraisal for a 13.63-acre parcel of land valued at $109,000, which amounts to approximately $8,000 per acre, a fireworks permit for Community Days on Saturday, August 17 and a $13,500 feasibility study to see if a new municipal building would be in the township’s best interest.
Supervisors also unanimously approved several resolutions and ordinances that included zoning fees, rental fees, duplicate record destruction and creating a property registry. In regard to the township’s zoning fees, which have not been updated since 2017, the board felt it was appropriate to increase the fees since costs have gone up.
Since the township is moving toward electronic permitting, the fees will also help cover the cost of the permitting software.
Township Manager Stephen Nowroski divulged that most zoning fees increased by $50; however, the three subdivision

Bath Borough Council hears Nurture Nature Center
Presentation
By SAVANNAH BROWN
The Bath Borough Council met Monday, July 8 with a busy agenda.
To begin, Project Specialist Lauren Fosbenner from the Nurture Nature Center provided updates to the borough on the CREATE Hub Municipal Resiliency Plan as the two-year project comes to a close.
The project involved six municipalities, including Bath, was funded through the Community Funding Program and focused on
improving local response to climate and weather-related hazards and environmental risks in the Lehigh Valley region.
Fosbenner explained that the hub will offer a citizen science reporting platform to engage residents in observing environmental conditions, create a physical in-person visitors’ exhibit at the center to accommodate evolving information, provide preparedness kits for municipalities to distribute to residents and
develop artist-designed maps that creatively illustrate the assets and priorities of municipalities.
The plan addresses flooding, extreme heat, weather-related hazards (such as wind, winter storms, drought, hail storms and lightning strikes), environment-related hazards (such as radon, wildfires, invasive species, sinkholes/subsidence and landslides) and humancentered hazards (such as pandemics, land-use changes, water quality
issues and air quality issues), and identifies goals, action steps and assets to leverage when building resilience for each type of hazard.
The next steps for Bath will be to modify the plan if necessary and consider formally adopting it
before sharing it with residents, as well as disseminating information and emergency preparedness kits to residents.
Bath was provided 50 emergency preparedness kits that include hazard educational resources, first aid items, a can opener/multitool, a dust mask, hand sanitizer, an emergency heat blanket, shelf-stable food/snacks, garbage bags, a flashlight, an emergency whistle and a USB flash drive to backup important documents, which come in a red bucket.
The Nurture Nature Center also provided Bath with educational materials on emergency preparedness in the event of hazards, which will be available at the municipal office.
In other news, council unanimously approved a structural inspection of the Monocacy Creek pedestrian bridge due to corrosion, which will cost approximately $4,000.
Next, Council President Frank Hesch provided information on this year’s Old Home Weekend. Thursday, Aug. 8 will be business night with The Bryant Brothers from 6 to 9 p.m. at borough hall

Former escape artist donates Book to Bath Museum
By HOME NEWS STAFF
Many people in Bath may not be aware (except the old-timers) that Blaine Hoffmeister, of Bath, was an accomplished escape artist/magician from 1964-74, until a back injury forced him to stop performing.
“I had hoped to be a stuntman in movies, but the back injury put a stop to that. I read a book in high school about Harry Houdini’s life and after that, I was hooked,” said Hoffmeister.
Hoffmeister then read every book about Houdini that he could find. He joined the Allentown Society of Magicians and the International Brotherhood of Magicians. He worked at Allentown Record Co., located at 10th and Walnut streets in Allentown, and heard there was a magic shop on Ninth Street.
“I stopped in the shop. It was owned by Harry Beehrlee, a retired magician/escape artist known as ‘Beehrlee the Wizard.’ He took me under his wing and I learned a lot from him,” said Hoffmeister.
Hoffmeister began performing escapes in 1964 using the stage name “The Great Houdon.” His nephew, George Maureka Jr., was his assistant. After 1970, Hoffmeister’s wife Gloria was his assistant.
One of the most dangerous escapes Hoffmeister performed was the “Water Torture Tank,” which involved him handcuffed and lowered into a water tank filled with 60 gallons of water, with the lid closed and the tank locked. The tank had a glass front which enabled the audience to observe him in the water-filled container. Within just three minutes, Hoffmeister would escape the tank, with the water still in it and the locks still intact.
Over the years, Hoffmeister kept a book of the stunts he per-
ter from the borough’s 250th Celebration Committee on the project they have decided to focus their efforts on, which is to fundraise and improve the West Main Street and South Chestnut Street intersection.
The committee feels that although the scope of the project is big, it will be a good way to give back to Bath and the community as a lasting gift. However, since the project involves phase 3 of PennDOT’s 248 realignment project, the borough manager and borough engineer will have to discuss the project with PennDOT to get their approval.
Plans for the intersection include the extension and widening of South Chestnut Street’s western sidewalk, clear pavement markings, a gateway sign that emphasizes local pride in Bath’s history, clearly striped parking spaces, parking meters, seating options, additional streetlights, low-maintenance landscaping, a historic sign marker and a blinking red or yellow light
formed. He decided to share it with the public by donating it to the Bath Museum on Saturday, June 15.
The book, consisting of about 100 pages of photos, newspaper clippings and letters, can now be viewed at the Bath Museum, open the third Saturday JanuaryNovember, and the first Saturday in December, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 121 S. Walnut St., Bath.

The concession stand will be open and residents are encouraged to decorate their homes in red, white and blue and bring their own chairs. Following, Hesch presented a lengthy let-
tisement and recruitment of two members of Bath’s general public to serve on the board for two and four-year terms, with one member up for reappointment by council each year; placing all borough bimonthly meetings on an as-needed basis going forward; and advertise-

The committee plans to look into grant opportunities and begin fundraising for the project soon, but wants the public to know that the funds could potentially be used for a different project if PennDOT does not approve the intersection improvements.
Later in the meeting, council unanimously approved the following motions and ordinances: authorization for the MS4 Committee to continue research and statistical analysis for further development of a tiered structure storm water utility fee; authorization for the MS4 Committee to begin the official process of forming a local Storm Water Authority; for the initial formation of the Storm Water Authority Board to consist of at least three members of the MS4 Committee serving one, three and fiveyear terms, as well as public adver-
ment of an ordinance removing a handicapped parking zone on Washington Street.
The next Bath Borough Council meeting will be held on Monday, Aug. 12 at 6 p.m. in the borough’s office building, located at 121 S. Walnut St.

Northampton Borough celebrates 470th Hometown Hero, applies for Community grants
By KERI LINDENMUTH
The borough of Northampton reached a significant milestone on July 3, installing its 470th, and final, Hometown Hero banner. Mayor Tony Pristash made the announcement during that evening’s borough council meeting.
“The joy and elation of people…projected at these banners makes up for the hundreds of hours put into this project,” he said.
The project started in 2022. The roadside banners on borough light poles honor Northampton’s hundreds of veterans and were sponsored by
families and loved ones.
Northampton Borough’s Public Works team played a significant role in hanging the banners. They even received their own banner as a show of gratitude.
Though the last banner has been placed, the stories are not over. The borough will continue to honor hometown heroes by sharing their histories and sacrifices on the Northampton Hometown Heroes Facebook page, led by volunteers from Northampton Area High School.
In other news, the borough is pursuing several local grants to
help with community improvement projects.
One such grant, the 2025 Hotel Tax Grant from Northampton County, would award the borough $9,000 for a Movies in the Park program. The borough would use the funds to purchase an inflatable screen and mobile concession stand.
Borough Manager LeRoy Brobst said neighboring communities have implemented these evening events with much success.
“I think it’s a great idea,” said Councilwoman Bonnie Almond.
The borough also received a $50,000 Northampton County Livable Landscape Grant for repaving the D&L Trail.
Finally, the borough is entering a second round of interviews with candidates for the borough manager position, as Brobst will be retiring later this summer.
Councilman Ronald Glassic said the committee has made “great progress.”
“We’re working tirelessly on this,” added Councilman Trevor Stone.
In addition to hiring a borough manager, the borough is also looking to appoint more volunteer fire police. The force is down to five active members. Those looking to volunteer are encouraged to contact the borough.
The next Borough Council meeting will be Thursday, July 18 at 7 p.m.
Northampton County has a 24-hour emergency hotline for all human servicesrelated emergencies. Anyone struggling with a mental health crisis, abuse, neglect, suicidal thoughts, evictions, substance abuse, food insecurity, etc. can call 610252-9060 for help and referrals.

becoming Nazareth’s second three-time state wrestling champion.
Kinney will be attending Lafayette College this fall on a football scholarship.
Tahir Parkins was also honored and congratulated for his 2024 state wrestling championship in the 133 lb. weight classification, making him Nazareth’s 30th state champion.
Parkins had a 41-2 senior season and 102-12 overall career record on the mat at the national, regional and state level, and will continue his wrestling career this fall at Rutgers University.
Next, the Nazareth Lady Blue Eagles softball team was honored for their second consecutive East Penn League Championship as Coach Steve Genzale and his staff guided the group of girls to unprecedented success in both 2023 and 2024.
Colondo remarked that the team has brought incredible honor to themselves, their school and to the community through their hard work, dedication and onfield successes by winning their second consecutive East Penn Conference Championship.
“To the wonderful group of softball players and deserving young ladies who have made us

all extremely proud, Nazareth Borough Council is pleased to once again congratulate the Nazareth Blue Eagles Softball team,” Colondo added.
In other business, the following public property agenda items were unanimously approved: use of the Essroc Fields soccer complex by Nazareth Youth Soccer for the fall season; use of the amphitheater on Monday and Friday evenings through November by the Nazareth Soccer Club; purchase and installation of an outdoor air conditioner unit and air handler for the arts center at a cost of $11,173; and supply of two porta potties for Nazareth Nite Out on Friday, July 19.
Under police, council unanimously approved “all day” free meter parking downtown on Friday, July 19 and Saturday, July 20 for Sidewalk Sales, the Nazareth Nite Out Block Party, the Saturday Farmer’s Market and all downtown Nazareth Day events,
as well as a resolution certifying the borough’s filing of a 2024 Northampton County Public Safety Grant seeking funding for two license plate readers to be placed along the Route 248 corridor at South Broad and South Green streets and the hire of Kerry Frey as a parking enforcement officer.
The monthly police report for June included 319 total police activity/calls for service, 14 crimes reported and investigated, 10 criminal arrests, one drugrelated crime, one Part 1 offense, 109 traffic citations, 95 warnings issued, two reportable traffic accidents and eight non-reportable accidents. There were also 154 parking enforcement officer violations, 74 parking enforcement officer issued violations and 228 total parking tickets issued for the month of June.
Agenda items under law were unanimously approved by council and included the following motions: advertisement of an amendment to the parking ordinance to identify the specific streets in the school zone subject to the resident permit parking or other parking restrictions; advertisement of an amendment to the parking ordinance to establish a program for
“Resident Permit Parking Only” in certain areas in the school zone; advertisement of a revision to the ordinance involving food trucks to eliminate the need for a food truck permit if the food truck is on private property; a change to the council by-laws to move the responsibilities for Economic Development matters from the Technology Committee to the Finance Committee; and establishment of the long-standing policy regarding flag poles located on borough property, that no flag shall be flown on borough flag poles except for the American flag, the Pennsylvania state flag, flags associated with Nazareth’s Fire Department, Police Department and EMS or flags associated with the U.S. military.
Due to an accident that caused the Nazareth Fire Department fire chief to sustain significant injuries, council appointed Joe Ianovale as interim chief and Frank Betz III as interim assistant chief until further notice.
For the month of May, Vigilance Hose Company No. 1 answered 32 service calls, which included nine fire alarms, three motor vehicle accidents, one wire problem, one EMS assist, two burn complaints, one gas leak, one brush fire, one carbon monoxide alarm and 13 mutual aid calls for five fire alarms, four motor vehicle accidents, one vehicle fire, two commercial structure fires and one gas leak.
The next Nazareth Borough Council meeting will be held at Borough Hall on Monday, August 5 at 6 p.m.
