Michael J. Jablonski
By ED PANY Mr. Michael Jablonski was reared in Reading and attended St. Peters Elementary School, later graduating from Holy Name High School in 1984. He especially remembered Mr. Reardon and Mr. John Gallagher, former teachers who influenced him. Michael also played baseball at the high school. Michael recalled, “Computers were in their infancy so I decided to enroll in Reading Computer Technical School to learn the basics of programming. I felt there was opportunity in this relatively new technology.” The credit manager at the cement plant in Evansville, now Lehigh Heidelburg, informed Michael there was an opening in the Accounts Receivable Department. The plant manager was Mr. John Kline. He remembered, “I was hired by Mrs. Phyllis Zitkus, the accounting manager at the rate of $8.50 an hour.” Presently, Mr. Jablonski is a

plant administrator in the accounts payable department. He said, “the position is both meaningful and challenging as thousands of invoices and millions of dollars are channeled through the department, so the plant can operate in an efficient manner.” He works closely with Mrs. Sue Hess and supervisor senior plant accountant Mr. Lloyd Lutz, both excellent and experienced employees. They work as a close-knit team. In 31 years, Michael has taken numerous refresher courses to keep up with current trends. He has been married for 14 years to the former Ms. Gemma Delsignore who holds a very interesting position as Communications Director for the Bernadine Francisan sisters with an office at Alvernia University in Reading. Mr. Jablonski is a friendly, amiable gentleman who said, “I enjoy my job and life, I am very lucky.” The friendly couple resides in Cumru Township. We wish Mr. Jablonski and all our friends at the century old plant a healthy and productive year. Hopefully I can return to visit the plant again next year.

Comic books we Remember By KATHLEEN UNGER Back in the days we got our entertainment from comic books. I remember Archie, Jughead, Blonde, Henry Aldrich, Nancy, Felix, Mutt & Jeff, Little Iodine, Betty & Veronica, Abbott & Costello, Charlie McCarthy, Ozzie & Harriet, Alley Oop, Andy Hardy, Annie Oakley, Buggs Bunny, Tom & Jerry, Mighty Mouse and many more Walt Disney characters. Comics were first introduced in America in 1896. They appeared as strips of funnies in the newspaper. The first modern comic
book, Famous Funnies, was released in the U.S. in 1933. It was a reprint of a newspaper humor comic strip. As time went on, they became more popular and in 1938, Superman was published as a comic book. Remember the Big Little Books? They were approximately 4” x 4” and about 1” thick. They first appeared in 1932 offering a small amount of reading material and pleasure within a small, compact book. The cost was 10 cents. They offered such objects as Dick Tracy, Smitty, Just Kids, Moon Mullis & Kayo, Popeye, Smoky Stover, Little Annie Roonie, Red Rider, the Lone Ranger and Charlie Chan. The last books were published in 1949.

Monsignor Francis Nave Removed from Sacred Heart Parish in Bath By HOME NEWS STAFF A Catholic priest was removed from ministry on Wednesday, June 27 following allegations that he encouraged a teenage boy to masturbate while being counseled by the priest, Monsignor Francis Nave, online. Nave was serving as pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Bath. The Allentown Diocese removed Nave upon hearing of the allegations. A lawsuit indicates that the victim in this case is a 16-year old boy from Virginia. According to the lawsuit, Nave contacted the victim through a gay social media website in 2012, telling him he was a priest and that it was his job to counsel people through their problems, and eventually convinced him to participate in online counseling sessions via Skype or FaceTime. The 16-year old victim states
that Nave convinced him to get naked and masturbate while on camera during these sessions, which Nave did as well online, during these sessions. The victim was able to take screenshots. According to the victim’s attorney, Herman, the teen reported these interactions to law enforcement. His attorney has praised him for coming forward with these interactions: “This brave young man is coming forward to expose a sexual predator in a position of power at the Diocese of Allentown. He hopes to prevent future victims. It is appalling that in 2018 there are still sexual predators in the Catholic Church disguising themselves as men of God. This is another good example of why the (Pennsylvania) Attorney General’s Report on priest sex abuse should be immediately released."

Make Lemonade out Of lemons One of my favorite shows is “Your Business” hosted by J. J. Ramberg. Here’s how it works.
by CAROL RITTER
Many times they highlight successful businesses and ask them to tell their story. The other piece of the show is they let an up-and-coming entrepreneur pitch an idea to two marketing experts. And the marketing expert will give them advice about their product or service. This week they featured a pond company. This father son duo owned a wildly successful pond company out west. The son had new ideas and wanted to take the company to a new level; maybe take some risks but the father wasn’t interested in that strategy. The result was that they ended up in a big fight with the father promising to run the son out of business. Those harsh words gave the son all the incentive he

needed to work even harder and, eventually, the opposite occurred and the father could not maintain his business and it folded. In 2007, the son started losing money at the start of the recession. Then the recession of 2008 hit with a vengeance and immediately people stopped buying ponds, considered a luxury item, and his business started to crumble. An unexpected snowstorm was the final straw and the flat roof of his facility caved in bringing the son’s business to a final end. The father and son reconciled and, after laying off hundreds of people, he kept a skeleton staff of 10 employees with the goal of rebuilding his business. He came back leaner, smarter, more energized and today his pond business is breaking records. He declared on the morning program he would never be where he is today had it not been for the “lemons” in his career. A recession, a snowfall and a parting of the family inspired him to begin the long journey of making lemonade out of the lemons he was given. What skills and attributes did the son display?
1.) Determination 2.) A sense of urgency 3.) A loyalty to his staff 4.) A love of his pond business 5.) Risk-taking. All those attributes are needed in order to pick up the pieces or lemons and successfully make the best business or lemonade you can.
Natural perspectives For the health-minded individual
Same lesson Being learned Over and over Does wisdom really need to come with age? My dad told me it does and I believe what my dad always said. He never lied to me. I get his point as the best teacher is time with a whole lot of experience sprinkled in. What I don’t get is why do we generally suffer through the same experiences knowing what the outcome would be? Don’t we ever learn? Perhaps I should not throw such a large net when I say “we.” Maybe I should just say “me” as not to offend. I can recall sneaking out and taking my father’s old 1973 Dodge Duster for a cruise late at night. I got a whooping for sure, but lo and behold, I did it again some many months later. Guess what? I was all smiles until I got back home again to see the porch light on and my dad walking through the living room. That still gives me goosebumps. In this particular case it only took me twice through to learn.

Helping for 20 years And learn well, I did. I wish I could say that about other areas of my life. Does anyone understand and somewhat agree? I hope so. As it pertains to health, imagine that incredible Thanksgiving dinner you starved yourself all day to eat. Now think about some twenty or thirty minutes after you finished. Anybody have a bloated belly and possible stomach ache? Promising yourself you won’t ever do it again is all well and good until that wonderful day arises again.

Along similar lines, we do such things with garbage, nutrient poor food on a constant basis. At some point we need to dial down the insanity because if we don’t, we can create disease within our own bodies. I see this every day. When will we learn? I don’t think more education or another prescription drug is the remedy. I really don’t. Sometimes you just need to suffer to the point where you have had enough. It’s all about the will and desire to change. It may be later than sooner but better later than never. Oft times we keep doing the same things over and over and suffer through the same over and over and don’t do anything about it…until you do. I love seeing someone who has a fire lit under them and are passionate about changing some aspect of their life. Look, I don’t wish hardship on anyone but you can’t tell me that adversity and grinding through “stuff” doesn’t at some point lead to a personal breakthrough. Oftentimes dramatically. Let me give you a personal example. Like many, if I have caffeine, I have heart palpitations. I don’t like these palpitations in the least. So why in the world do I still have caffeine in my life? It’s illogical. I can and do go long periods of time without it and then suddenly, “that guy” goes looking for caffeine, as if it will have no affect this time around. It does. I suffer. Repeat. Now that’s kind of funny but not really. It’s strange. But it is a common pattern I see and a good example of having to suffer through things of our own doing, over and over on the way to, well, victory and hopefully greater wisdom down the road. My best to you all.

GAB OVER by Pete THE FENCE G. Ossip Last Sunday, I got a message over my phone alerting me about a flash flood warning as torrential rains were expected the following day. I expected a storm with that kind of rain like we had on July 9, 1945 –– the flash flood that covered down town streets in Bath, and got into homes and businesses. It didn’t happen this time, thank goodness, but it was a reminder. Seeing water like a river flowing down Chestnut Street that night 73 years ago was kind of frightening for a youngster as I was at that time. . . .How do you like those Phillies? They finally reached a tie for first place
in the NL East on Friday after beating Pittsburgh with 17 runs, as the Atlanta Braves lost out in Milwaukee to the Brewers. The next day, both teams won. And on Sunday all of the contending teams lost. Next up were the Mets with a double header as the Phils are on an 11-day road trip. I don’t know how long it will last, but it’s a young team and they’re still learning, so congrats to them for getting to the top this late in the season. Ye Ed’s daughter is up from the Atlanta area town of Marietta this week visiting him, but she still sticks with the Phils from growing up here. . . . The Northampton Exchange Club is celebrating with their annual community days fair this week and the Bath Lions Club will be running the Bingo tent Thurs-
day, Friday and Saturday, I’m told. They’ll miss Charlie Billings, who called out the numbers for many years and has passed away. Taking his place will be Fi Mirabito, Phyliss Andrews and Viola Wesner. . . .Gas prices have leveled off from $2.90 to $3.05’s, and are likely to stay that way. . . . There was a car shown on TV to the Dream Team this past Saturday morning, not from any of the manufacturers whose names are familiar today, that sold recently for $2 million. They also showed all the old flivvers we hadta hang on to as the plants had to make planes and tanks for World War II instead of new cars. . . . NAZARETH AREA
Annual Kazoo Parade Buzzes through Nazareth By KERI LINDENMUTH The Borough of Nazareth held its annual Fourth of July ka-
zoo parade on Wednesday, July 4. Over one hundred marchers making up a sea of red, white,
and blue paraded from Nazareth Area High School, up Main Street, around the square, and to Council Chambers. They performed patriotic favorites like “Grand Old Flag,” “God Bless America,” and “Yankee Doodle.” The Nazareth Bath Area Re-
Nazareth Mayor. gional Chamber of Commerce has hosted this event for well over a decade. Chamber of Commerce president Cynthia Anderson and board chairman Bill Skinner marched alongside borough residents and spoke to marchers and onlookers following the event before presenting veterans with American flags. The Gilbert Family of Sing for America performed the National Anthem, as well as several other patriotic tunes, including the U.S. Armed Forces Salute. Nazareth’s Mayor Lance Colondo was also in attendance, offering a few words of inspiration as the borough celebrated the country’s 242 birthday. “You cannot love your country without loving your countrymen and women,” he said. He urged citizens to bridge divides and come together. State Representative Marcia Hahn also spoke before paradegoers and presented the parade’s grand marshal and guest speaker Paul Connolly, Jr. with a citation
from representatives in Harrisburg. After high school, Connolly was drafted into the Vietnam War, entering active duty in 1966 as a member of the United States Navy. He returned to his hometown of Bath in 1968. “We did [Vietnam Veterans] a disservice when they came home,” she said. “They were not properly thanked.” Fifty years later, Hahn took the time to thank Connolly for his past service and his present dedication to the community. He has served as a Bath volunteer firefighter for 45 years and also helps run Bath Supply, a company his father started, now in its third generation. Connolly also made sure that others like him, other men and women serving at home and abroad, were properly thanked for their sacrifices, their dedication, and their courage. “Thank you…for serving our country,” he said.

Special Meetings July 15-20
We invite you to attend our special meetings with the Jimmy J. Millikin Evangelistic and Musical Family of Claremore, OK, July 15-20. Meetings will be held at 10:45 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 15, and at 7:00 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, July 16-17, at Northampton Assembly of God on Cherryville Road in Northampton. The services will continue Wednesday through Friday evenings, July 18-20, in a tent at the 26th Street Playground next to Redner’s Market in Northampton on Cherryville Road. The services will be at 7:00 p.m. We invite you to come and hear Evangelist Jimmy Millikin as he preaches anointed Bible-centered gospel messages like his message in a previous meeting on “Your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things” (Matthew 6:32). While emphasizing that God knows our distinct personal needs, he told of a man who attended their meetings in Ohio who had just been saved and delivered from a life of sin and drugs. While reading his Bible he came across the account of Jesus healing the leper, and he prayed, “Lord, I am like this leper. I’ve lost my family and everything because of sin and drugs. I would sure like to know more about this leper. Would you have Jimmy preach about that leper tonight?” That night the Lord led Jimmy to preach on the leper! As he explained how leprosy is a type of sin that destroys one’s life, tears streamed down the man’s face in realization that God cared enough for him to answer his prayer! Jimmy and his wife, Shauna, minister through inspirational combinations of spiritually refreshing gospel songs and saxophone solos. Our congregation is praying that the Lord will use the Millikin family to be a blessing to all who attend. These services will also feature uplifting congregational singing of the hymns of the faith, and joyful worship and praise to God, as well as life-changing times of earnest prayer at the altar in the awesome presence of Jesus Christ.

! s g le y ir a h e v a h s Our best friend Six tips to keep pets safe During storm season by DEBBI MAYSTER While no one is immune from the devastation of a natural disaster, preparing before a storm hits is key to keeping everyone in your family—including your pets—safe. Here are six ideas to keep in mind for your pet as you map out your disaster preparedness plan.
• Have your pet microchipped. In the event
of an emergency—natural or otherwise—you want to ensure your pet can get back to you if you’re separated. Collars and ID tags, though important, can break or detach. Microchips—computerized and scannable implants about the size of a grain of rice—are more fool-proof since they’re inserted under your pet’s skin.
• Bring your pets inside at the first sign of danger. Di-
sasters can be disorienting for pets, and they could run away or hurt themselves reacting to loud noises and strange changes to their landscape. Also, rain, flying debris and high winds pose a danger.
• If you have to leave, keep your pet with you. Leav-
ing your pets behind during a natural disaster is never a good idea because they could escape or become exposed to a number of life-threatening hazards. Keep them on a leash or in a pet carrier so they don’t escape even in a “familiar” neighborhood.
• Determine where you’ll go. Coordinate, in
advance, to stay with friends
or family members, or find a pet- friendly hotel outside the disaster area. Have those conversations and do your research well ahead of time so you have a plan in place when needed.
• Create a petfriendly resource list. Not all emergency shel-
ters will accept pets, so you need a Plan B. Develop a list of the pet-friendly hotels outside your immediate area. Research a list of veterinarians in the area should your pet need medical care (your regular vet may have some recommendations). Also, figure out which boarding facilities are nearby in case you need to separate from your pet for a time.
• Pack an emergency bag. You’ll want
emergency provisions packed for your pet well in advance of a catastrophe so you can evacuate your home quickly if needed. Choose an easy-tocarry bag, label it and keep it where everyone in the family can find it quickly. The bag should include a pet first aid kit; enough food and bottled water for a week (rotate this every couple of months to keep it from going bad); medications (check periodically to ensure medicines in your emergency bag don’t expire); cleanup supplies; food and water dishes; bags (or litter for cats) for collecting waste; an extra collar and leash; photocopies of medical records; towels; recent photos of your pets; and a favorite toy or chewy for comfort. It’s also a good idea to have a sturdy carrier or crate for each pet.

“What’s good for us is good for our pets,” said Kris Kiser, president and CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), the international trade association representing more than 100 power equipment, engine and utility vehicle manufacturers and suppliers. “My dog Lucky the TurfMutt is a member of the family, so we have a plan for keeping him safe in the event of an emergency, and we encourage all pet parents to do the same.” By having all this in place, you can immediately put your pet preparedness plan into action when you know a storm is coming instead of spending valuable time trying to determine what needs to be done to best protect your pet.
