George Wolf Elementary School collects Over 3,000 items for food bank
By CATHERINE STROHGeorge Wolf Elementary School in Bath recently held “Stuff the Bus,” a food drive for the Bath Area Food Bank. Spearheaded by Student Council Advisor and fifth grade teacher Michele Davidson, this student council event was the first one held since 2019.
The goal of the event was to stuff a small school bus with
food to donate to the food bank.
However, the school collected above and beyond its initial goal, filling a full-length school bus instead.
On Friday, May 5, student council members loaded the bus and made the short walk over to the food bank for delivery as the bus was so stuffed there was no room for them to ride along.

Joe said, “The B-29 was so big we thought it could never get off the ground. The crew sat on the edge of their seats to help the super fortress off the ground.”
After many missions, Japan surrendered in 1945, and Joe and his crew returned home. A month after he returned home, he had a surprise visitor. “Socks” Seibold, a scout for the Chicago White Sox, stopped by Joe’s Washington Avenue home.
Socks, with a booming voice, said, “Joe, get in the car. We’re going to Lancaster for a tryout.”
After the tryout, Joe and his fellow teammates were sent to Lima, Ohio to play on one of Chicago’s Minor League teams. After a season, it was back to Northampton. This was the era of the Lehigh Valley Twilight League, when

Joe said.
Our loyal Whitehall readers may recall Ed as a great baseball player and great baseball coach at Whitehall High School.
Joe continued, “We were paid $25 for three games a week.”
This writer saw many of the games. We all looked up to and admired all of the players.
With the demise of N.A.A., Joe followed his friend Ed and played for Egypt A.A. His last games were played for Cementon A.A.
Joe’s brother-in-law had the last word: “Joe, now is the time to quit. You’re married and have two nice children. What if you break a leg?”
Joe hung up the old glove and, with it, memories of hits, runs, errors, victories and defeats. Reflecting on his playing days, Joe stated, “All the guys I played with on those teams, I consider friends. We played for the love of the game. Today, many big leaguers only love the game for the big dollars in their paychecks.”
In 1946, Mr. Tanzosh was hired by Mack Trucks as a parts changer. His salary was $125 a month. As time increased, his salary increased to $400 a month.
The company transferred him to Cleveland, Ohio for 20 years and then to New Jersey. He did intensive traveling as a regional manager for Mack. Joe, a dedicat-
ed employee with our local work ethic, retired from the famous truck manufacturer with 39 years of faithful service.
He then moved back to Northampton. Back then, I asked him why.
“Northampton is our home,” he said. “Here, we have deep fam-
ily roots.”
Joe and his wife Betty are deceased. They were proud parents of five children: James, Joseph, Mark, Jane and Beth.
I sincerely thank his sister, Florence Jurasits, my neighbor, and brother Paul for sharing memories with all our loyal readers.
Northampton County announces end of Emergency Rental Assistance Program
Submitted by BRITTNEY WAYLEN
The last day to submit Emergency Rental Assistance Program applications is Monday, May 15.The program is ending due to the end of the COVID-19 National Emergency Declaration.
To assist renters and landlords deal with financial challenges related to the COVID-19 Pandemic, Northampton County Executive Lamont G. McClure directed the Northampton County Department of Human Services and Department of Community and Economic Development to respond to the crisis and to develop the Community Mediation and Eviction Diversion Program (CMED).
The CMED Program is funded through the Emergency Rental
Assistance Program (ERAP) established by the Consolidated Appropriations Act 2021, signed into law by Governor Wolf. For eligible households, the ERAP program was created to offer rental and utility assistance to help avoid eviction or loss of utility service, including assistance with other housing expenses and the provision of housing stability services.
Northampton County has processed over 10,000 rental, hotel, and utility assistance applications and distributed over $27 million to renters and landlords.
Northampton County has been cited on the Federal Treasury website for its successful use of the ERAP. To prevent evictions, the County hired tenant navigators to complete network-

ing within the courts and work to connect tenants to social services through a variety of partnerships.
“Northampton County supports strong and equitable services for our residents,” says Lamont G. McClure. “Our Department of Human Services and Department of Community and Economic Development worked together to avert a myriad of evictions through rent and utility assistance throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic.”
Northampton County Department of Community & Economic Development administers resources for homelessness prevention and rapid rehousing through Catholic Charities, Diocese of Allentown. them,” said Davidson.
On delivery day many members from St. John’s Lutheran Church were present to help unload the school bus. The children were then taken on a tour of the food bank, learned how it operates and how people
get their food.
The Bath Area Food Bank distributes food the second Tuesday of each month beginning at around 9:30 a.m. on the lower level of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bath. Those wishing to receive food are asked to not arrive prior to 9:30 a.m.

Township Solicitor David M.
Backenstoe presented his draft of the Blue Ridge Cable franchise agreement, which will require Blue Ridge to pay the township 5% of their revenue for putting up their cable lines. Supervisors will decide on whether or not to approve the agreement at next month’s meeting.
Backenstoe also updated the board on the Schiavone Farm agreement of sale. During bidding, Red Edge Farm bid $200,000 for the farm and Phil Ronca bid $351,000. However, since Red Edge Farm had the right of first refusal, they chose to match Ronca’s bid and requested to begin farming the property immediately. Since the Red Edge Farm purchase is contingent on getting state assisted farm financing, Backenstoe suggested charging $220 per acre for them to lease the property until the purchase is finalized in the event that they do not secure financing, which Backenstoe expressed was unlikely.
Next, Beckenstoe drafted an ordinance for the vacation of Trach Road between Bauer Road and South Summit Road upon receipt of Township Engineer Kevin Horvath’s metes and
bounds description for record.
Supervisors approved a motion to hold a formal hearing with a stenographer and testimony provided by the road foreman, engineer and property owners to vote on the vacation of Trach Road on Thursday, June 22 at 6 p.m. in the municipal building.
In other business, supervisors unanimously approved a 12-month CD renewal in the amount of $6,325.77 at a 4.75% interest rate.
Supervisors also unanimously approved a motion to move forward with purchasing a paver
and trailer using the LSA statewide grant that was applied for jointly with East Allen Township. The equipment will cost $16,708 more than the grant covers, and the township will split the difference with East Allen Township.
Following, the board unanimously approved a motion to accept the Whitetail Farm Views deed of dedication, which was returned two weeks ago. Last, the board unanimously approved a motion to award the 2023 seal coat projects contract
Lehigh Elementary School Named national finalist In Harlem Globetrotters Creativity Competition

betrotters. Known as the “Court of Creativity presented by Jersey Mike’s Subs,” the contest encouraged students and teachers to showcase their creativity related to the Harlem Globetrotters or the sport of basketball. Students submitted a photo showcasing their creativity through inventing their own basketball hoops. Students tested their creations with competitions around the classroom.
As a finalist, Lehigh Elementary School earned a $1,000 donation from Jersey Mike’s Subs. One grand prize winner will receive a visit from the Harlem Globetrotters before the end of the 2022-23 school year.
Lehigh Elementary School students impressed the judges with their innovative approach to the challenge. Students across the country created unique and entertaining basketball entries ranging from a piece of Harlem
Globetrotter-inspired art, musical numbers, trick shot videos, and incorporating basketball into their subject or hobby. The entries showcased the students’ teamwork, imagination, and athleticism.
“Creativity makes everything more fun — whether at a Harlem Globetrotters game or in school,” said Rich Hope, Chief Marketing Officer of Jersey Mike’s Franchise Systems, Inc. “We received some amazing submissions from across the country as students channeled their inner Harlem Globetrotter. Lehigh Elementary School stood
out to us and earned their spot as a finalist.”
The challenge was open to public, private and vocational schools with grades kindergarten through 5th across the United States. It was part of Jersey Mike’s and the Harlem Globetrotters’ ongoing efforts to promote healthy lifestyles, teamwork and creativity among young people.
Northampton Borough Council still looking for 4th Ward Representative, hires summer lifeguards
By KERI LINDENMUTHThe Northampton Borough Council announced during their May 4 meeting that they are still accepting applications for a vacant council seat representing the 4th Ward, left empty after former Councilwoman Sandra Sayuk resigned in April. Sayuk replaced former Councilman Anthony Lopsonzski, Jr. after he moved
out of the borough.
Borough Manager LeRoy Brobst said he has received only one application for the vacancy. The borough is accepting applications through 4 p.m. on May 12. The applicant must have resided at the same address in the 4th Ward for at least the last full year. Applications can be picked up at the borough offices.

In other news, council hired part-time summer employees to assist with public works and the municipal pool. Brobst said there are more than enough lifeguards to staff the pool this season. There is a shortage of cashiers/bathhouse attendees, but Brobst believes several lifeguard hires will be interested in covering both positions.
Whether or not the borough could find enough lifeguards to staff the pool this summer has been a concern among several members of council, especially since neighboring municipalities closed their pools last year due to lifeguard shortages.
“I am pleasantly surprised to see how many lifeguards we have,” said Councilman Trevor Stone.
“That is a great number,” Councilwoman Judy Haldeman echoed.
Several other announcements were made during the May 4 meeting. It was announced that Brosky Insurance has helped the borough find more affordable flood insurance for its pump station, saving the borough an additional $1,500. It was also announced that the borough’s police department acquired two Chevy Tahoe SUVs, one to replace a police vehicle totaled in an accident. Finally, poor weather has delayed
efforts to paint the municipal pool. This work is still scheduled to be completed as the weather allows.
Several upcoming events are also scheduled for the borough. The Joint Veterans Committee will hold its annual Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. on May 29 at Veterans Plaza at 14th Street and Washington Avenue.
The borough’s farmers’ market also started on Tuesday, May 9. The market will be held every Tuesday from 3 to 6:30 p.m. at Municipal Park.
“Please attend and support our farmers’ market,” Councilman Ronald Glassic asked residents. “Hopefully, we can keep on growing it.”
Finally, council took some time to thank the borough’s police department for holding its annual fishing derby. Several council
members in attendance had children and grandchildren attend the event.
“It was outstanding,” said Glassic.
Mayor Tony Pristash thanked the police department and the many officers who volunteered during the event on their day off. Pristash also praised the borough’s fire department for holding a mock oil spill training. Their dedication and efforts, he said, “should not go unnoticed.”
Councilman Anthony Lopsonzski, Sr. echoed these sentiments. From the road crew and police department to the fire department and ambulance corps, he said, all community members give their best.
The next borough council meeting will be Thursday, May 18 at 7 p.m.

PUBLIC NOTICE OF INTENT TO ADOPT 2023-2024 FINAL BUDGET
Submitted by LARRY OBERLY
Edward Pany, curator of the Atlas Cement Company Museum, has announced its reopening. The opening will take place on May 14 at 1 p.m. Many of the displays have been refreshed and new items have been added.
The museum traces the development of the cement industry in the Lehigh Valley, starting with the devel-
opment of a Portland Cement plant in Coplay by David O. Saylor in 1866.
In all, more than 60 cement plants would thrive on the richest limestone deposits in the world. That stone ran in the ground from just east of Reading to western New Jersey and formed the basis of this industry. The impact on our Lehigh Valley can easily be compared to the steel industry, but cement is still being produced here.
Our four Atlas plants made it the largest cement facility in the world by 1905. The museum is located at 1401 Laubach Ave., Northampton, and is open from 1 to 3 p.m. on the second and fourth Sunday of each month, May through September. Admission is always free. Private tours are available for groups of 10 or more by calling 610-2622576 or 610-262-4562.

What’s in your water?
Hello, I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself, Janet Sheats, as a Candidate for Lehigh Township Supervisor 2 year term.
I am a rooted resident for the past almost 13 years here in Lehigh Township with my husband David and our children.
Our children have graduated from Northampton High School with one remaining at home who is currently in the 10th grade. I have previously coached both Basketball and Baseball for our boys with LTAA. I am a volunteer EMT/ Firefighter with our local department, I have dedicated over half my life to public service.
I believe in Honesty, Integrity, and most of all Community. The only promise I can make at this time is that I will give 100% effort to serving our residents of Lehigh Township. I am currently doing my due diligence in obtaining knowledge of Township budgets from previous years and reviewing the Lehigh Township Supervisor's meeting minutes. Please consider supporting me and my campaign on May 16th 2023. Hope to see you at the polls.
