Local educators voice their Passion for helping kids Learn, succeed and grow
By SAVANNAH BROWN
Looking back on all the years spent in classrooms from kindergarten through 12th grade, we may not remember the concepts we learned, but we will never forget the educators that made an impact on our lives.
Educators have one of the most important jobs because they are
tasked with teaching the very children that will soon shape the future. They also teach children lessons they will carry with them as adults, encourage them to follow their dreams, and often provide so much more than what they are given credit for.
The Home News is seeking essential workers in the community to interview for a new, ongoing feature, Noteworthy Neighbors. Emergency responders, teachers, local government, bus drivers, farmers, etc.; if you do essential work for a living, we want to hear from you. If you are interested in being interviewed and sharing with the community the work that you do, please email AskUs@HomeNewsPA.com.

A number of years ago, we wrote a series tracing the history of the borough of Chapman and the quarry, where high-quality slate was quarried and split. Recently, we found a nostalgic photograph of hardworking slaters who were employed by the Chapman Slate Company. The community was named in honor of William Chapman, who was born in Cornwall, England, where he worked with his
father in local slate quarries.
He came to America in 1842 and leased property in Northampton County. He entered the slate industry and organized the Chapman Slate Company.
The quarry enticed many slaters to come to Chapman to work. Many boarded in company homes. As a result, the population of the borough peaked at 700 around the turn of the cen-

Lauren Belowich of Bethlehem Township is a math teacher at Northampton Area High School. She has taught at Northampton Area School District for 15 years and decided to become a teacher because it has always been her passion due to her avidity for leading, serving, and helping others achieve their goals.
One of the things Lauren appreciates most about being a teacher is seeing the progress that students make over the course of a year, which is why her proudest moments are when she gets to see her students grow throughout their four years in high school and when she gets to see them walk across the stage at graduation.
“Every day brings a new challenge. Sometimes I teach algebra, sometimes I help students realize they can do challenging things, sometimes I am a cheerleader and support them at their out of school activities, and sometimes I am just there to be a sounding board when they’re having a tough day. Regardless of the hat I wear, I am grateful for the opportunity to be trusted enough to help them grow,” Lauren shares.
he has always enjoyed helping people, which he gets to do every day as a teacher.
Zach explains that the hardest part about being a teacher is seeing and hearing the struggles that some students are faced with outside of the classroom, but that his favorite part is seeing the “aha moments” in the classroom.
“Science can be a difficult subject for some students, as it requires the understanding of abstract concepts and the use of critical thinking skills. There’s nothing more rewarding than watching students go through an investigation and seeing the look of excitement on their faces when the light bulb goes off,” Zach adds.
Another aspect of teaching that Zach finds rewarding is when students he previously taught come back and tell him about the positive impact that his class had on them.
Zach’s advice to individuals thinking about becoming a teacher or who are just starting out is to not fear failure.

Curt explains that as a principal, he tries to be a role model for students and someone that students and teachers can both lean on when they need to talk through issues that are bothering them.
“I try not to make it an ‘us versus them’ thing, as I’d much prefer to work together to solve problems. Discipline calls are hard because [they] can lead to hard feelings and animosity, which I don’t like. If I am too harsh, it can damage the relationships between myself and the student/family, but if I’m too lenient, it damages the relationship between myself and staff, so it’s a narrow line that seems to be getting thinner each year,” he adds.
Lauren explains that the things teachers and staff help students with at school reach far beyond the traditional views of education, which is why teaching is such a fulfilling career for her.
Not only is Lauren fond of teaching, but she also loves helping students realize their potential.
“I enjoy seeing their confidence grow and helping them understand how perseverance and a growth mindset can help them achieve their goals,” Lauren adds.

“As a teacher, growth comes when you aren’t afraid to try something new. Every teacher can tell you about a lesson that failed miserably, but they would also be able to tell you about what they learned from that failure and how it helped them plan all sorts of successful lessons in the future,” Zach shares.
Curtis (Curt) Dimmick of Allen Township is the principal of Moore Elementary School. Prior to becoming a principal, Curt was a teacher where the building principal of the school he taught at urged him to switch to administration. The rest, he says, is history, as this school year marks his 14th year as principal at Moore Elementary.
However, Curt says the hardest part about being a principal is when he has to call parents to discuss their child’s inappropriate behaviors or a consequence for their child’s actions.
The relationships that Curt builds with students, their families, and his staff are what he loves most about being a principal.
“I have met so many amazing people over the years. Being the principal, I have such a great opportunity to see a different side of the students and their families and I think it allows me to be more of a ‘confidante’ than anything else,” Curt reveals.
Curt also shares that he wants students to feel that he is their advocate and someone they can rely on when they are at Moore and even after they leave, and that he wants parents to feel that they can reach out to him when they need

June 24, 1960 is our anniversary and the only time we were apart in our 58 years of marriage was when I was in the U.S. Army.
Shirley…I cannot believe it’s been five years since you were taken from me. They say time heals all wounds, but this is one
wound that will never heal…
Even though we have been apart, you have lived within my heart and always will until we meet again.
I only thank the Lord for the wonderful wife He gave me; my gift of you, Shirley, for having been my wife and best friend. God Bless.
Loving husband, Franklin.

Bath Farmers Market kicks off 16th season with ribbon cutting
"We definitely need a market in this area," said Bath resident Jackie Sellers. Kids participated making chalk drawings on the sidewalks of the Monocacy Creek Park. Two little girls were happy to meet at the market, accompanied by their parents.
They had fun drawing and playing hopscotch.
The Bath Farmers Market is located at West Main Street in Bath and runs every Saturday through September 30 from 9 a.m. to noon. Visit www.bathfarmersmarket.org for special events throughout the season and we’ll see you at the clock.

This past Saturday, May 20 was the opening day of the Bath Farmers Market. This season marks their 16th year and their second year at the new location at Monocacy Creek Park on West Main Street in Bath.
Jodi F. Nestor, District constituent outreach specialist (office of State Representative Zachary Mako) was present to cut the ribbon. A speech was given by Tracy Berger-Carmen, then everyone cheered and clapped as the ribbon was cut and the market was officially open for the season.

“There is no better feeling in the world than having a student come up to me and say that they think I’m the best principal, which is funny because I’m usually the only one they’ve had, but I’m not going to tell them that,”
Curt jests.
Overall, it is abundantly clear how much these three educators love and value their role as educators and how lucky NASD is to have them. Not only are they shaping the minds of our children and our future, but they are also inspiring a love of learning, fostering growth and inspiring imaginations—all while being an encouraging, unwavering guide of support to help students believe in themselves and follow their dreams.

Northampton Borough Council appoints Jason Donohue to vacant council seat
By SAVANNAH BROWN
The Northampton Borough Council met Thursday, May 18 to discuss various requests, the vacant 4th ward council position, and committee reports.
To begin, council unanimously approved the request from Covenant United Methodist Church of Moore Township to use the portable band trailer on Sunday, August 27, as well as the request from Northampton Area High
School to have fire police available on Friday, June 2 for traffic control for the class of 2023 graduation ceremony with rain dates of either Saturday, June 3 or Sunday, June 4.
Following, council unanimously approved the request to construct a handicapped parking zone in the area of 814 Main St. based on the recommendation by Police Chief Bryan Kadingo.
Next, council unanimously
approved the request to apply for a Community Development Block Grant for an amount not to exceed $20,000 to fulfill one of the requirements of the River Central Comprehensive Plan for an update to the Zoning, Subdivision, and Land Ordinances.
Council also unanimously approved a request from the Northampton Fire Department for permission to use one of the fire department’s SUVs to attend the Annual Fire Expo in Harrisburg.
In other news, council considered the applications of Jason Donohue and Ronald Knopf to fill the vacant 4th ward council seat.
Donohue, who has lived in the borough for 22 years and is an equipment operator for Whitehall Township’s Public Works Department, was appointed by council to fill the vacant seat. Councilman Anthony Lopsonzs-
ki, Sr. abstained from the vote due to running against him in the election.
Borough Solicitor Brian Panella explained that the next step will be informing the elections office because Donohue was appointed to a separate seat than he applied for, so they will need to determine how they want to proceed and if this appointment would be timed out with the election in November.
Panella added the seat will most likely appear in the November elections. If Donohue is not elected in November, he will serve until the first Monday in January.
During committee reports, Ad-
ministration and Finance noted that they have received a check from the insurance carrier in the amount of $53,598 as payment for a police vehicle that was totaled in an accident and that they received the quarterly franchise fee from Service Electric in the amount of $6,035.28.
Building, Land, and Recreation reported that the organizers of Paw Prints on the Canal are looking for volunteers to help with their bake sale for their event, which is scheduled for Sunday, June 11. Individuals interested in volunteering should contact the borough office.
Public Works and Sewer reported that the street sweeper has some severe mechanical problems due to the engine in the back that operates the vacuum system being beyond repair. However, re-

EMS Supervisor Jacquelyn Kalynych set everything up for
Annual Memorial Day parade in Nazareth Borough
The annual Memorial Day parade in Nazareth Borough will be held on Monday, May 29 beginning at 10 a.m. in the Circle and will conclude at Council Chambers. the open house, which included coloring and a dalmatian fire pup bounce house for the kids, CPR instruction, blood pressure checks, cornhole, goodies such as lanyards, key chains, bracelets, and pencils, and even hot dogs and hamburgers for everyone who attended.
This is Nazareth Regional Ambulance Corps’ first year holding an open house for the community after going live Oct. 1, 2022. Prior to that, they were Nazareth Ambulance.
Kalynych shared that this time last year, Nazareth Ambulance was struggling and had to obtain coverage from other communities. The ambulance service only had two employees at the time and one truck, which almost caused it to close.
Now that they’ve turned things around, Nazareth Regional Ambulance Corps (NRAC) has 30 employees on their roster, with

two to three trucks up and running a day.
“We’re very family oriented. We try to do different activities with our crews. We’re taking them out to dinner next week for an EMS dinner for EMS appreciation week,” Kalynych beams.
Just this month, NRAC received 50 Medic 1, a Ford Expedition Medic Unit, and last month, they received 50 EMS 5, a Crestline type 1 ambulance, which are both up and running and were proudly on display for the community to get a closer look at.
Kalynych notes that EMS equipment is very expensive, so they are hoping for some donations to cover the cost of the equipment that they still need, which includes a Stryker power load system that costs $18,950, a Stryker power stretcher costing $23,300, a Lifepak 15 cardiac monitor costing $44,850, an automatic CPR device costing $16,660, an average type 3 ambulance that starts at $159,900, and an average type 1 ambulance that starts at $214,900.
Kalynych also pointed out that NRAC works really well with the local fire and police departments like Vigilance Hose Company No. 1, Upper Nazareth Fire Department, Nazareth Police Department, and Upper Nazareth Police Department, which were all in attendance and brought goodies such as hand sanitizer, stickers, coloring books, miniature fire hats, and water bottles, as well as informational pam-
phlets.
Crowd favorite Sparky the Fire Dog was also in attendance from Vigilance Hose Fire Company No. 1, posing for pictures, shaking hands with everyone, and teaching kids about fire prevention and safety.
The open house also received support from St. Luke’s University Hospital-Trauma Network and Lehigh Valley Health Network who attended the event and brought goodies such as hand sanitizer, band-aids, chip-clips, notepads, and pens, as well as informational pamphlets on “Stop the Bleed,” injury prevention programs, and more.
Individuals and businesses interested in donating to the ambulance corps can make checks payable to the Nazareth Regional Ambulance Corps or NRAC and send them to their address at 519 Seip Ave. They will also be starting a subscription drive starting June 1, which residents can find more information about in the mail and on their website, nazarethems.com.
Additionally, individuals interested in renting out the Nazareth Regional Ambulance Corps event hall or applying for paramedic, EMT, and van transport driver positions can find more information and applications on their website as well.

placement parts or a replacement engine are not available, so they are exploring the possibility of replacing the entire unit using liquid fuels funds, which would cost around $150,000.
It was also reported that a complaint had been filed with the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency who passed it on to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and they then forwarded it to the Environmental Protection Agency regarding the storage of hazardous material in different areas of the Northampton Memorial Community Center.
On Monday, May 15, Borough Manager LeRoy E. Brobst went through the building with a representative of EPA and the Department of Environmental Protection, and no hazardous materials were discovered. The question arose due to a portable surgical setup that was stored in the building in 1958 by the Civil Defense. Arrangements are being made to remove the artifacts from the building.
Next, Mayor Anthony Pristash reported the Monarch Butterfly Project officially broke ground and distributed a few tons of topsoil.
Pristash also noted that he met with the property owner of the now closed PNC Bank whose goal is to fill the building with a business or even multiple businesses due to its prime location for business in downtown Northampton. Individuals interested in occupying the space should reach out to the borough manager or mayor. Additionally, Pristash expressed that Senator Nick Miller awarded the borough with $25,300 for surveillance equipment.
Councilwoman Judy Haldeman shared that Kaden Rossanese’s Eagle Scout project to build a paver pad outside the Northampton Borough Fire Department to honor active, retired,
and/or fallen firefighters, police officers, and EMTs has officially sold at least 30 bricks and will soon begin construction.
Haldeman also announced the borough pool has been painted and filled with water in preparation for the upcoming opening, but they are still waiting on the diving board and slide to arrive. To date, only one season pass for the pool has been sold, but individuals interested in purchasing passes can obtain them from the Recreation Center.
Councilman Lopsonzski suggested offering Catasauqua a reduced rate pool pass due to their pool being defunct.
The upcoming Northampton Borough Council meetings will be held Thursday, June 1 and Thursday, June 15 at 7 p.m. in the borough’s municipal offices, located at 1401 Laubach Ave.
