153rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Holds Decoration Day Ceremony in Bath in honor of Elmer Whitesell

Memorial Day weekend is full of remembrance, celebration, pool openings, family, friends and good old fashioned hot dogs and hamburgers. However, Memorial Day isn’t as widely understood as some may think.

Tom Mulkern, Christopher Holub, Mark Tramontina, Gary Weaver (flag bearer) and Dave Seier and the South as far back as 1861 with much debate surrounding the founder(s) of Dedication Day.

Originally known as Dedication Day, Memorial Day began on May 30, 1868 as a day to honor and mourn fallen Union soldiers following the end of the American Civil War. However, there were similar ceremonies that took place in both the North

The year is 1950; we will be attending a union meeting of Local 18 Nazareth Cement Company. The meeting is being held at the Holy Family Club in Nazareth. The invitation came from Mr. Roland Roth, a member of Local 18. Roland would have a long career with the United Cement, Lime and Gypsum Workers International Union.

The union members will be discussing their 1950 labor agree-

ment. The contract will continue until April 1952. Representatives of Local 18 are Paul Wukovitz, C.F. Caflin, Stewart Buss, Aloys Yost and Roland Roth. The District Representative is V.H. The national day of observance gained official recognition as a holiday amongst a number of states in subsequent years, and the aftermath of two world wars molded it into a day of remembrance for all U.S. military members that fought and died in service.

In 1971, Congress changed the name from Dedication Day to Memorial Day and changed the day of observance, so that the holiday would always occur on the last Monday of May.

Christopher Holub is a U.S. History teacher at Jim Thorpe Area High School and a member of the 153rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry who was gifted Private Elmer F. Whitesell’s discharge paper in January.

Holub didn’t have much to go on, but he began his four-month search for more information on Whitesell right away.

According to his discharge paper, Whitesell was born on Jan. 3, 1875, making him 24 years old when he enlisted. He was 5 feet 4 inches tall with blue eyes, black

Bath Area Community Chorus prepares for 12th Annual patriotic program

The volunteer-based Bath Area Community Chorus got its start in 2012, following the Borough of Bath’s 275th anniversary.

The Home News is seeking essential workers in the community to interview for a new, ongoing feature, Noteworthy Neighbors. Emergency responders, teachers, local government, bus drivers, farmers, etc.; if you do essential work for a living, we want to hear from you. If you are interested in being interviewed and sharing with the community the work that you do, please email AskUs@HomeNewsPA.com.

Director Sharon Schrantz, who has been singing in choral groups since the age of seven, shared that prior to the anniversary, the Bath Area Council of Churches would get together on the eve of Thanksgiving. The churches involved would hold a Thanksgiving celebration where a chorus was formed.

Members of the chorus were from several local churches who came together out of a shared love of singing.

Upon Bath Borough’s 275th anniversary, Christ Church of Bath put out a call to other churches in the area for a Flag Day Program that was to be held at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. Support for the program exceeded expectations and amassed 45 participants.

Out of those participants, a core group of singers decided they wanted to put on another program at Christmastime, and alas, a chorus was formed. Although they had no formal title when they formed in 2012, they received generous community support and have been putting on two programs per year since then, in June and December.

Every June, the 24-member chorus puts on a patriotic program for Flag Day where they honor military veterans and first responders. Then, in December, the chorus puts on a Christmas

patriotic program will be donated to the Bath Volunteer Fire Department, and funds raised from the Christmas program are donated to the Bath Area Food Bank.

Sharon beams that it was quite an honor for the chorus to also be invited to put on a musical program at Emmanuel’s Lutheran Church in Moore Township in observance of their 300th anniversary.

Throughout the years, the trickiest part for the group was finding a rehearsal night that fit best with everyone’s schedules, especially since the group has members from all over, including Bath Borough, Moore Township, Nazareth Borough, and even Jim Thorpe, but Sundays at 7 p.m. has been a good fit.

“I love talking about this group; their energy is just amazing and their desire to get things right and work hard is so uplifting,” commends Sharon.

Typically, the group has 10 rehearsals before each of their programs to fine tune their vocals and instrumentals.

“Rehearsals are fun and relaxed, but we get down to work and I think we provide a lovely program in the end,” Sharon reveals.

The choral group is always looking for new members and the ability to read music is helpful but not required.

What’s more, Sharon explains that there are no auditions, so interested participants can just show up with their voices and an open mind, ready to sing their hearts out.

“It’s lovely to have such a dedicated group of people that get together and do something they all enjoy and even enjoy each other’s company,” says Sharon.

On Sunday, June 9, the Bath Area Community Chorus will present their patriotic program, “Songs of Freedom,” at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, located at 206 E. Main St. in Bath. The program will begin promptly at 4 p.m.

Rehearsals for the Christmas program will begin in September, so singers interested in becoming members of the Bath Area Community Chorus can contact Sharon Schrantz at 610-837-1555 to inquire about joining.

Gear up for race day at the 7th Annual Adult Soapbox

Race in Nazareth

On Saturday, June 1, the Nazareth Adult Soapbox Racing Association (NASBRA) is celebrating its seventh year of “bringing racing back to Nazareth.” Set your chair up along West Prospect Street in Nazareth to watch the fastest and most outrageous soapbox cars compete for trophies and bragging rights.

Watch the racers practice from 9 to 11 a.m. The race begins at noon and will feature 28 racers.

Spectators are able to vote for their favorite car, try their luck at raffle prizes, including a 75” TV,

Phantoms hockey “game-worn” jerseys, Iron Pigs and Pocono Speedway tickets, and enjoy a variety of food favorites.

This community event began in 2012 by a small group of friends and family. It ran for five years before taking an 11-year hiatus. The Lehigh Conference of Churches, a non-profit in the Lehigh Valley, brought the race back to life in 2023. Proceeds from the race benefit the Conference and their mission in the fight to prevent homelessness.

If you can’t make the race, watch the Facebook livestream beginning at noon.

Annual Memorial Day ceremony Held

Bath American Legion

To some, Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer. It means school is out, vacation begins and backyard parties commence. To others, Memorial Day weekend is much more than just time by the pool.

“For me it’s not a party, it’s honor and respect for those that died for our country and our safety,” said William Schleicher.

Schleicher is Second Vice Commander of the American Legion, Eckley E. Patch Post 470 in Bath. He also serves as president of the Legion Riders.

“I’m a veteran, both of my grandfathers, my great uncle, my brother, my nephew- we’re all veterans,” said Schleicher. “I think every veteran should be involved in something like this.”

Schleicher is referring to the annual Memorial Day remembrance ceremony, held at the Bath American Legion.

The event was held Sunday, May 26 on the front lawn of the Legion and was hosted by the American Legion Post, Legion Auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion, American Legion Riders and their families.

Post Commander Brian Radcliffe officiated the ceremony, joined by Father Christopher Butera of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Bath. Father Butera is a military chaplain who has been promoted to the rank of major.

Friends and family members came to show their support in honoring American veterans, but more specifically, to honor three members of the Bath Legion who lost their lives within the past year, Richard Dech, Andrew Donello and William Pickett.

“It’s the little bit that we can do to say thank you,” said Post Commander Radcliffe.

“They're the ones that gave us the rights, privileges and freedoms we enjoy today.”

Radcliffe, a Navy veteran himself, even got emotional at times throughout the ceremony.

“I can sit there and type this [speech] up and read it 100 times, but until you get up there and read it in front of everybody with the overall feelings of the day- there's nothing we can say to thank those men and women enough,” said Radcliffe.

“This is near and dear to my heart,” Radcliffe added.

Memorial Day honors: Northampton Pays tribute to fallen heroes

Despite the inclement weather, Memorial Day services went on across Northampton County on Monday, May 27. The Sons of Veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic, Captain Theodore H. Howell Camp No. 48, con-

tinued its 114-year-long tradition of honoring the fallen by visiting 10 cemeteries throughout the Northampton area, including the Allen Union Cemetery in Northampton Borough.

Due to rain, services at the cemetery were moved indoors and held at Grace United Church of Christ on Lincoln Avenue. Richard Webster, superintendent of Allen Union Cemetery, offered the welcome message and invocation.

Webster, joined by members of the community, honored the fallen men and women who have “given their lives so that we may stand here and still live in freedom.”

“Those that are gone have created a clear path,” he said. “Take their memories, take their dreams, and walk forward.”

The Sons of Veterans then recited the Gettysburg Address before honoring the fallen with a rifle salute and a performance of “Taps” and “The Star-Spangled Banner” by the Tri-Community Marching Band. The marching band also performed “Nearer, My God to Thee” and “O Beautiful for Spacious Skies,” while Eugene Kutzler performed a bagpipe solo.

The morning’s keynote address was delivered by Northampton Borough Manager LeRoy Brobst.

“Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it,” he said. “And mankind has not learned. As I speak, there are probably people on this globe dying from war.”

A Vietnam veteran, Brobst received his selected service letter in 1967. He followed in the footsteps of his father, a World War II veteran, who passed away when Brobst was nine from a service-related disability.

“We are obligated as living members to remember those who have fallen,” Brobst continued.

While Brobst said he could not imagine what soldiers in the Civil War or World War II went through, he stated, “I can imagine what it was like to be under a mortar attack and having people running here and there and dropping.”

“I don’t know their names, but I will never forget their sacrifice,” he said. “I do not know how we can ever repay these people.”

But they were not the only ones who made a sacrifice. Brobst shared the story of his mother, who suffered greatly not knowing whether her son would return. She was admitted to the Allentown State Hospital during his service, and he was unable to take leave to visit her.

“I would have you leave here today thanking not just the veterans…but the families they left behind.”

Said Webster in his benediction: “We must continue to carry the burden of their sacrifice.”

hair and a fair complexion.

The paper also documented that he was born in Illinois, he was a painter prior to his enlistment and he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on July 25, 1899 in Philadelphia. Whitesell is also documented as having served his

full five-year enlistment upon his separation.

On the other side of Whitesell’s discharge paper, Whitesell’s “battles, engagements, affairs or skirmishes” are listed, including his involvement in the Boxer Rebellion in Northern China and the dates for about 15 engagements across Asia.

Holub did some digging on Ancestry Records and found several records of Whitesell’s participation in engagements and is recorded as having participated

in the march across Samar where the Marines were attacked by Filipino insurgents. After having survived five years of service in the U.S. Marine Corps and numerous tumultuous engagements, Whitesell made it home to Bath, where he lived out the rest of his years.

However, at just 48 years of age, Whitesell was hit by a car while crossing the street and suffered a skull fracture that killed him just four days later on Nov. 2, 1923.

According to his obituary, Whitesell never married, didn’t have any children, was survived by five siblings and is buried in Green Mount Cemetery in Bath.

Holub found Whitesell’s grave on Find a Grave, but it was unclear where in the cemetery he was buried. Eventually Holub found the headstone of Whitesell, which was illegible and unkempt from almost 101 years of dirt and decay.

Holub divulged that if he had not known at least the shape of the headstone, he may have never found Whitesell’s final resting place.

Then, on May 19, Holub and his son Daniel cleaned Whitesell’s headstone amongst several other fallen soldiers in the cemetery, restoring them to their former glory.

Holub presented the story to

his fellow 153rd Regiment members, who agreed to honor Whitesell during a Dedication Day ceremony over Memorial Day weekend.

So, on the bright, sunny morning of Saturday, May 25, members of the 153rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment dressed in their Civil War reenactment uniforms to honor and remember Whitesell and several other soldiers throughout the Green Mount Cemetery by presenting arms in formation and laying flowers at each of the soldiers’ graves.

Holub’s presentation during the ceremony detailed his journey to find, learn about and commemorate Whitesell and several other fallen soldiers. Now, the soldiers of the gravesites he restores will live on for centuries to come.
