purchase. Over the next four weeks leading up to the festival, we will feature some of the unique things to do and see at the festival in the Home News. One of the favorite activities at the festival is hearth cooking. There are only two times a year when you can observe, and taste, this 1800s activity – the Holiday History Festival and the Antiques Show in March. It starts early in the morning with lighting the fire in the 10’ wide hearth at the north end of the Ralston-McKeen House. Only hardwoods are used to create the coals which are used to cook throughout the day. Continued on page 3

VETERANS DAY 2021 IN MEMORY AND HONOR…

During the past year, we have had the privilege of serving the families of Veterans. We are honored to be of service to them in their time of need, just as their loved one was there in our time of need. On Veteran’s Day, we pay tribute to those who served our country in the name of Freedom, the same Freedom that allows us to serve them. Our prayers are with all the Veterans, their families, and with the brave men and women serving our country today. We also wish to thank those from our area’s veteran service groups who volunteer their time in honor guards and firing squads bestowing the greatest honor for their deceased comrades. Lewis E. BATH AREA Bath Borough discusses parking concerns, Signs emergency contract with paver, and Looks ahead to park improvements

By KERI LINDENMUTH The Borough of Bath Council meeting on Monday, November 8, was a busy one for members of council, manager Brad Flynn, and Mayor Fiorella Mirabito. Several business owners approached council with concerns over parking. Tom Yost, of Mattie’s Strudel Haus on Main Street, said cars have been parking in their loading area in the evenings and on weekends. Meanwhile, Paul’s Garage on Northampton Street is also having difficulty with illegal parking. Cars have been parking in front of the business’s entrance and exit, blocking customers and employees from leaving.

Council will look into painting a yellow curb outside of Paul’s Garage and investigate the parking concerns on Main Street. Residents or business owners who notice parking violations are encouraged to call parking enforcement officer Onix ReyesSantiago at 484-225-0728. In other news, council authorized Flynn to sign an emergency contract with Bracalente Construction for paving on Independence Avenue and Easter Terrace. Nazareth is unavailable due to timing. With asphalt plants closing for the winter, only one contractor was available to perform the work. “Our options are limited,” said Councilman Frank Hesch. “We need to get this done.” Without the wearing course, the road could fall apart during the winter. A special engineer who analyzed the project has already observed safety concerns. While Pennsylvania’s prevailing wage act would apply to this construction, thus increasing the price, council acknowledged they are between a “rock and a hard place,” though to no fault of their own. Ultimately, the road must be paved for the safety of residents. In other news, the Bath Republican Club, which set out to raise $10,000 for the Parks & Recreation Committee, will be presenting their donation to council during the December meeting. For several months, the club has been fundraising to help purchase playground equipment for the borough. It was also announced that Ciff Cowling Field may be getting a new stage. Councilman Barry Fenstermaker will be working with the borough engineer and Mirabito to plan out and estimate a possible bandshell at Ciff Cowling Park for future concerts and performances. Finally, council unanimously approved the 2022 budget. While there is no property tax increase, council did approve a .25 mill fire tax increase to support the needs of the volunteer fire department. This is the first fire tax increase since 2016. Upcoming events in the borough include an electronic recycling event on Saturday, November 13, from 9 a.m. to noon at Fireman's Field; a Monocacy Creek cleanup on November 13 from 9 to 11 a.m.; and the annual tree lighting at Monocacy

Creek Park on November 28 at 6 p.m. Finally, the Pennsylvania State Police will be at the December council meeting on Monday, December 6, at 6:30 p.m to talk to residents and answer any questions. Residents are encouraged to attend.

and possibly an administration building on the site. Kovalchik explained that nothing has been determined or set in stone, but something has to be done. The school board would have to decide what to do with the four buildings mentioned and if construction will take place on the Route 329/ Seemsville Road site. Parents and students alike also discussed issues of violence in schools. One parent detailed an incident just this month where her daughter had her hair pulled, glasses broken, and was punched by another student. Pool Road concerns raised at Moore Township BOS meeting

8 November 11-17, 2021

By CHRISTINA SANTO At their Nov. 4 meeting, the Moore Township Board of Supervisors discussed Pool Road concerns, the Wheel Collision Center land development plan, and the 2022 budget. Residents raised concerns about high-speed illegal left turns onto Pool Road from Pheasant Drive at last month’s board meeting. Engineer Kevin Horvath proposed two solutions to this problem: larger signage restricting left turns coupled with more enforcement or restricting traffic to one-way coming out. Both of these changes would not require a traffic study, but would require

a letter notifying PennDOT of the change and the board to pass an ordinance or resolution. Horvath suggested using both changes as a multi-step plan, so if larger signs and more enforcement do not work, they can fall back on the one-way restriction. However, residents felt changing Pool Road to a one-way

During the September planning commission meeting, Wheel Collision Center presented their plan for a 6,000 square-foot storage building behind their property on Moorestown Drive. NORTHAMPTON AREA Northampton Borough Council Remembers late Councilman Keith Piescienski By KERI LINDENMUTH On Thursday, November 4, Northampton Borough Council and borough manager LeRoy Brobst remembered late councilman and former borough fire chief Keith Piescienski. Piescienski passed away on October 26. Born and raised in Northampton, he served as councilman for the borough’s First Ward for eight years. He was also an active member of the Northampton Volunteer Fire Department for over 50 years. During his memorial service and celebration of life, volunteers from the fire department and fire police were present to pay their respects. “The fire department just pulled together,” said Fire Police Chief and Councilman Kenneth Hall. “We put together the opposite of what [Piescienski] would have wanted,” he joked. “He was not that kind of person.” “I haven’t seen that many people in uniform since I got out of the army,” added Brobst. Councilman Anthony Lopsonzski, Sr. credited the display to Piescinski himself. “Keith was a well,” he said. “He passed that knowledge on to different people, and you can see the results.” In addition to his service as a councilman and firefighter, Piescienski also served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He received military honors during his funeral. Brobst was emcee during the memorial service, something he called a privilege. “I knew [Piescienski] for most of his life,” said Brobst. “We went to school together.” Brobst’s and Piescienski’s close relationship lasted into adulthood. “He used to come into my office all the time,” he told council. “We were like brothers…I miss him.” Following Piescienski’s passing, council has a vacancy it must fill by November 18. Members of the public are encouraged to apply. In addition to being a registered voter, candidates must have lived in the borough’s First Ward for at least one year and must continue to live in the First Ward during the length of their service. Council will be accepting applications until November 18, during which time they’ll interview candidates and vote to fill the vacancy by resolution. The individual selected will fill out the remainder of Piescienski’s term through 2023. In other news, during the November 4 meeting, members of the Alliance Fire Company board

were present to donate $3,000 to the Northampton Volunteer Fire Department. “We want to give back to the community like the old days,” said Alliance president Todd Csencsits. The fire hall had been closed for five months during COVID-19. Now, Csencsits says they are trying to rebuild through monthly events and new member recruitment. Also announced during the meeting is that the borough will receive several grant awards. One, for $34,000, will go toward a new police cruiser. Another grant for $10,000 will go toward the borough’s Monarch butterfly preservation project. Finally, a $22,000 grant will go toward trail improvements. The date and time for the borough’s annual tree lighting were also announced. The ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, November 28. Festivities will begin at 5:30

p.m., with Santa arriving around 6 p.m. Finally, council approved a borough shredding event for Saturday, April 30 from 10 a.m. until noon at the Northampton Community Center. The next borough council meeting will be on Thursday, November 18 at 7:30 p.m.

The board also accepted the resignation of three employees. Megan Lieberman will be leaving the position of school nurse effective at the end of the day Nov. 19. Donna Ruckman, hall monitor, will be resigning effective Dec. 31, and Susan Stoltz will be retiring from her position on Feb. 2, 2022. The Northampton Area School Board will meet next on Monday, Nov. 22 at 6:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium, 1619 Laubach Ave.

but rather an explanation. “We’re [going to] follow through on things as best as we humanly, possibly can,” said Kovalchik of the violence in schools. He also expressed that these issues are not going to be solved overnight. In other business, the board approved the extension of police officers Michael Renner and Peter McAfee. A preliminary copy of the budget, as well as minutes from the Oct. 27 budget meeting, are available on the township’s website. cue Plan (ARP). There are many restrictions on what the ARP funds can be used for; Steiner explained that they plan to create an online payment system, purchase an electronic sign for the municipal building, and update police computers, with the bulk of the money going towards stormwater management. Finally, Moore Township has been providing neighboring Chapman Borough with police and snow plow services for around 12 years. Both contracts are up this year, and Solicitor David Backenstoe drafted two ordinances for advertisement renewing the agreements. Backenstoe, along with Zoning Officer Jason Harhart, was also tasked with drafting a letter to state legislatures asking for updates to the municipal planning code. The Moore Township Board of Supervisors will meet next on Tuesday, December 7 at 6 p.m. in the municipal building located at 2491 Community Dr.

Thank you from Robert Hawke, MDJ, 03-3-01 It is with humility that I wish to share a whole hearted thank-you to all of the people of the district in which I am honored to serve. Thank you for all those who came out to vote and supported my re-election and even those who did not. I have been re-elected to serve and honor the law for all the people of our district. I hope you will find that I will work with the same continued dedication to my office that I have always tried to bring to each and every case I hear. Our system of courts and justice is built on the foundation that EVERYONE IS EQUAL before the law. I have been given a great opportunity by all of you to serve you and to administer that justice within the framework set out by the legislature of Pennsylvania and the constitutions of this great commonwealth and our great nation. I strive to always be fair, dedicated, and professional in the execution of my duties. It has been my honor to serve as a police officer and as a judge for now nearly forty years. I have seen some of the worst of how people can act during that time, but also, some of the very best. While our justice system is not perfect, it is still the best in the world, founded on many great principles and it is my pledge to you that I will take the great trust you have allowed me and always strive to honor that trust and to continue to hear each and every case with fairness and justice. Paid for by The Committee to Re-Elect Robert Hawke

The care you trust. Now more than ever.

Gab Over The Fence

by Pete G. Ossip

Did everyone remember to “fall back” this past weekend? I forgot to mention it in last week’s issue. I severely dislike it being dark at 5 p.m., however I do always enjoy that Sunday as it feels like there is so much more time in the day. Not worth months of darkness though...Anywho, speakin’ of Sunday, this past Sunday it was All Saint’s Day. St. Paul’s UCC in Northampton had a real nice service. I was late though on accounta the runners passing through for the annual marathon...What’s with all the break-ins goin’ on around the Northampton Borough? I hope everyone stays safe and is careful. Residents are being told to turn lots of lights on and basically act like they’re home when they’re not, the break-ins are occurring in the evening when nobody is home. I hope the thieves get caught soon...This week’s issue is our annual Veterans Day issue, next week we’ll have some coverage from some local ceremonies. Upper Mount Bethel Township had a Veterans Day celebration last weekend in the Community Park with fireworks...I saw that Troop 33 will be collecting food for the Bath Area Food Bank this Saturday on the 13th from 8 to 11 a.m. They will be set up at the Klecknersville Fire Company in the parking lot if you wanna stop on over and donate. Also this Saturday is Bath’s electronic recycling and document shredding event. Pretty sure that’s only available to Bath Borough residents but I am not certain either way. Anyway, that’s from 9 a.m. to noon at Fireman’s Field in the borough...Speakin’ of Bath, the Bath Lions Club is having their Candy Cane Hunt again this year, but they’re in need of participants! Seems like they already have some but if more people don’t sign up by Nov. 15 they’ll have to cancel the event...On Monday an Easton Area School

District bus filled with children went into a creek. Doesn’t seem like anyone was severely hurt but the driver and at least 13 of the 29 middle school students went to area hospitals. Can’t imagine how scary that must have looked and been for all those kids. Wonder what caused it?...We send our well wishes to our Nazareth sports columnist Andy Weaver and his family. Andy, his mother and his aide were in a car accident earlier this week. We wish them a speedy recovery, I’m sure they’d appreciate any cards or well wishes you could offer...That’s all for this issue, gotta wrap it up here and get out and enjoy the beautiful weather before it’s gone- cya!
